Hogan in fresh storm over Irish Water fees
ex-minister accused of trying to hide his role Former environment minister Phil Hogan has been accused of ‘washing his hands clean’ over his role in the controversial €86million spent by Irish Water on consultancy fees. Despite denying any knowledge of the costs when questioned earlier in the year, it now appears that not only was he presented with a detailed breakdown of where the money was going but that he gave his approval for it to be spent. Asked directly at the time about the millions, mr Hogan said that he had not been told about specifics – telling journalists that he had ‘no plans to micromanage Irish Water’ and, referring to what contracts were being given out, that ‘it was not my

provision for €32million spending on IT, €12million on customer billing and registration, €13million on economic advice and €8million on support services. The document did not feature the word ‘consultancy’ but, according to Irish Water director John Tierney, there was an understanding between Irish Water and the Government that the company would need to hire consultants. The revelations come after a tough week for mr Hogan, who has faced criticism following news that he has been tipped for the Agriculture portfolio in the european Commission. opposition parties are accusing the Government of trying to hide mr Hogan’s involvement in approving the controversial consultancy fees.

Posh’s stars and stripes by THOMAs sTicHbuRy
VICTORIA BECKHAM showed she’s brought the fashion world to heel as she revealed her first shoe designs at New York Fashion Week. The former Spice Girl unveiled her latest collection – which also featured a stripey jumpsuit – in front of a who’s who of industry players including Anna Wintour. And just in case an added dose of star power was needed, she made sure husband David was sitting next to the icy Vogue editor. The plaudits poured in online afterwards, with celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe tweeting: ‘Stunning show by the ever chic Victoria Beckham.’ Posh, 40, was in her usual skyscraper stilettos as she lapped up the applause for the spring/summer 2015 collection at the Cunard Building, treating fans to a rare smile. But she opted for florally decorated flats, rather than heels, for her fledgling foray into making footwear. Proud David watched with the couple’s eldest son, Brooklyn, 15, as models paraded in neatly tailored outfits that were dominated by muted tones but also featured some vibrant pink rose-print designs. The 39-year-old showed his support by planting a smacker on his wife’s head backstage. Wintour, 64 – joined by flamehaired side-kick Grace Coddington, 73 – kept her feelings hidden behind those trademark dark glasses.

Good hygiene set to drop off scale with water meters
Dirty business: Meters
Hygiene standards in more than half of ireland’s households are expected to fall below current levels following the introduction of water meters. This is according to a survey that reveals that some six out of ten adults plan to reduce the amount of water they use for personal hygiene when water meters come in. The findings show that there is little difference between the genders with regard to the issue, with 60 per cent of men saying they will reduce water use and 59 per cent of women planning to do the same. The average adult in ireland currently uses 37,000 gallons of water each year in the home – which is more than double that of any other european country, appliance maker Hotpoint found.

Construction sector gets boost for 8th month in a row by DAviD kEARns The recovery in the construction industry appeared to take another step forward last month, with the latest figures indicating further growth in the sector. construction activity increased in August, the eighth consecutive month of rising workloads, according to tracking data on the market. Although the Ulster Bank construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) found the rate of increase slightly slower than the previous month, experts said it was still moving in the right direction. Simon Barry, chief economist at Ulster Bank, said: ‘Trends in the Irish construction sector continue to show strong improvement.’ construction firms recorded sharp increases in activity on both housing and commercial projects during August despite the rates of expansion easing slightly. By contrast, civil engineering activity continued to fall, albeit at only a modest pace. The availability of sub-contractors had declined to the greatest extent
Government ‘must secure recovery’ IRISH consumers are no longer gripped by the fear factor, it has been claimed. Business group Ibec said rising employment, strong consumer optimism, recovering retail sales and an improving export market pointed to a solid recovery. But, it warned tax cuts were still needed to stimulate growth. Ibec chief economist Fergal O’Brien said: ‘Now is the time to secure recovery. The Government must take steps in the budget to ease pressure on households.’ since September 2000 but the improving conditions also led to an increase in new work during the month allowing companies to take on additional staff. At the same time, sentiment reached a near-record high as optimism among Irish construction firms improved for the third month running.
Ibec’s Consumer Monitor report said there was scope for €300m worth of income tax reductions, a €100m reduction in consumer taxes and the abolition of the pension levy in the 2015 Budget. The report also claimed that with 65,000 more people now employed than two years ago, Government pressure on social welfare spending should ease. Mr O’Brien said: ‘Reducing tax could lead to a four per cent rise in disposable income next year.’ Mr Barry added: ‘The solid improvement continues to be underpinned by particular strength in both the housing and commercial arenas where activity trends are benefiting from substantial increases in new orders.’ In turn, the solid trends in new business are translating into higher staffing levels.

Baby murder case doctor’s timeline ‘doesn’t add up’
SERIOUS questions have been raised in court about the reliability of the testimony of a medical specialist, whose diagnosis led to an Irish nanny being charged over the death of a one-year-old baby girl in the US. Aisling Brady McCarthy, 35, from Lavey in Co Cavan, is facing first-degree murder charges over the death of baby Rehma Sabir, who died in Boston in January last year. The baby was diagnosed as having been the victim of abusive head trauma – or shaken baby syndrome – within 20
by Nick BRAMHiLL
hours of the child being admitted to Boston Children’s Hospital. It was the medical opinion of Dr Alice Newton, an experienced child abuse paediatrician, that led to the arrest of Brady McCarthy in January last year. Dr Newton, who at the time of the incident was the medical director of the child protection programme at Boston’s Children’s Hospital, had stated that there could be no other explanation for the baby’s death other than her being the
victim of abusive head trauma. She had also pinpointed the timing of the abuse to ‘close on 3-4pm’ on the afternoon of January 14, 2013 – critically a period of time when the infant was solely in the care of Brady McCarthy. But in a dramatic development in the case, serious doubts were raised about the accuracy of her diagno-
sis. The defendant’s lawyer, Melinda Thompson, claimed at a pre-trial hearing that Dr Newton failed to take into account many other injuries, including spinal bone fractures that had occurred to the child weeks or months earlier, some in time frames when the defence said it could prove the child was not in contact with the nanny.

QPR footballer JoEY BARToN, 32, launched last year’s Stonewall campaign against homophobia in the game by sporting rainbow-coloured laces. He’ll don them again to kick off the campaign this week How do you feel last year’s first Rainbow Laces campaign went?
I really enjoyed being part of last year’s campaign – I think last year was definitely a success in raising awareness of the issue.
How did your team-mates at QPR take it? Our lads were on board from the outset and I think it was a clever way to attack what is a difficult issue.

Did you expect the support it got and also some of the concerns raised by some clubs and leagues about the timing and the ‘Right Behind Gay Footballers’ tagline?
I was not sure at first how well supported it would be. The phrasing was tongue-in-cheek but it needed to be to ensure people sat up and listened.

There are always people who are going to complain – they will say blue is red for the sake of an argument. The key is getting the message out to the public that us lads are supportive of fellow pros and supporters, no matter what their sexual orientation.
Do you expect a current Premier League player to come out any time soon? I don’t know is the honest answer, but I certainly feel that the campaign has made positive strides so that a player would be comfortable coming out. Providing we can keep moving forward, raising

Ukraine ceasefire close to collapse by AiDAN RADNEDGE
UKRAINE’S ceasefire was on the brink of collapse last night after fighting erupted outside the rebel-held eastern city of Donetsk. Russian-backed separatists boasted of capturing eight government troops amid fresh shelling near the city’s airport in Spartak. Houses caught fire under a bombardment of missiles fired by rebels which provoked retaliation from Ukrainian forces. Yesterday’s clashes and earlier shelling in Mariupol threw doubt on whether the truce, signed on Friday, would hold, experts feared. Blasts powerful enough to be heard in downtown Donetsk came from the direction of the airport which has been reduced to a burned-out husk. The terminal has come under unremitting attack from rebels. In nearby Spartak, resident Anastasia Ivanusenko learned her house had been destroyed as she was coming to pick up basic items for her baby. ‘We are temporarily living in a dormitory. Ukrainian president PetTalks: Putin ro Poroshenko’s office said he and Russian leader Vladimir Putin had spoken by phone and discussed steps ‘for giving the ceasefire a stable character’. But Amnesty International’s secretary general Salil Shetty said: ‘All sides in this conflict have shown disregard for civilian lives and are blatantly violating their international obligations.’

Men arrested over ‘gay marriage’ clip AUTHORITIES in Egypt have called for the arrest of nine men after a video purporting to show a ‘gay marriage’ went viral – the men are accused of ‘debauchery’. State news agency Mena reported that seven of the men have since been detained, while police search for the remaining two. State prosecutors of the mainly Muslim country ordered
by cON DOHERTy the arrests on Saturday and a statement from its offices said the footage ‘violates public decency’. While the alleged marriage took place last April, the video has since gone viral, compelling police to identify those taking part in it, the public prosecutor’s office said.
The video, posted on YouTube, shows a group of men celebrating as two men exchange rings – an act prosecutors said was ‘humiliating’ and ‘regrettable’. The images would ‘anger God’, the statement said. The men face detainment of up to four days and ‘medical tests’ – a practice believed to identify homosexuals in the country.

scots ‘No’ bid has real currency AN INDEPENDENT Scotland will not share the UK’s currency, Britain’s chancellor has said after a shock poll showed the ‘Yes’ campaign is in the lead for the first time. George Osborne spoke as the British government scrambled to respond to the surge in the independence vote by offering more powers to Scotland within the UK. A survey put the No vote on 51 per

We will not share the pound if Scotland separates.’

€31m payout for five wrongly jailed for rape in central Park FIVE men wrongly convicted of raping and brutally beating a jogger in New York’s Central Park 25 years ago have won €31million in damages. Their payouts were approved by a federal judge and mayor Bill de Blasio called the settlement an ‘act of justice that is long overdue’. The five men, who are all black or Hispanic, were jailed as teenagers for the attack on white investment banker Trisha Meili in 1989. They served between six and 13 years in jail for the attack, which left Mrs Meili in a coma for 12 days. She suffered massive blood loss and a fractured skull in the attack but has no memory of the incident, which – at the time – was cited as evidence that New York’s crime rate had spiralled out of control. The five were arrested soon after the attack and confessed after lengthy interrogations but later recanted, claiming their admissions were the result of exhaustion and police coercion. Their convictions were thrown out in 2002, when serial rapist and murderer Matias Reyer confessed he had committed the crime. Korey Wise, who at 16 was the

The other four – Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam – will be paid €5.5million each. It is thought to be the biggest settlement for wrongful conviction paid out by the city. It also ends a bitter tenyear legal dispute stemming from the crime.

THE €344,000 HOusE WHERE yOu cLiMb OvER kiTcHEn uniTs TO usE THE bED A HOUSE which brings a new meaning to the word ‘bijou’ has gone on the market but will still set the buyer back a hefty €344,000. Comprising just one room in its 188 sq ft of living space, the minuscule property is barely the size of a lock-up garage... although
the estate agent prefers to call it ‘really sweet’. It’s such a squeeze you have to scramble over the kitchen worktop and up narrow steps to reach a mezzanine bed. Estate agent Winkworth said the house in Islington, north London, would probably sell to an investor.
HOME sellers could add thousands to their property’s value just by hiding items such as family photos, kettles and tacky holiday keepsakes, a study claims. Maximising space really does pay off, with two-thirds of those who de-cluttered before putting their place on the market saying they received an average €6,000 above the asking price. Even tried and tested tricks such as baking bread or making a fresh pot of coffee seem to
have the desired effect, with sellers earning an extra €1,061 just by doing so. Property expert Kate Faulkner said: ‘It’s fascinating to see the tactics which really pay off. A cluttered property will look smaller and so buyers are less likely to offer the full price. ‘The research shows freeing up space and de-personalising a home helps create a blank canvas and buyers can better imagine themselves living there.’

X-rated farewell is tribute to Joan by sEAMus Duff
SHE said she wanted her funeral to be one big showbiz bash and that’s exactly the send-off Joan Rivers received yesterday. Fittingly for the woman who made a career in acerbic comedy, the F-bombs and jokes had the rabbi in New York’s Temple EmanuEl synagogue putting his head in his hands. Journalist and talk show host Geraldo Rivera said he never saw a funeral with more laughter. ‘It really was so funny, Howard Stern opened with an X-rated joke,’
Big bash: Rivers wanted laughter he said about the radio and TV personality. ‘Cindy Adams, the columnist, followed shortly after. The
rabbi was burying his head as the F-bombs were launched. ‘And then Hugh Jackman nailed it with a great Broadway song. So it was a real New York show. It was exactly as Joan would have wanted it,’ he added. Brooklyn-born Rivers wrote in her 2012 book I Hate Everyone… Starting With Me, about wanting her funeral to be a big bash. Veteran journalists Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer, comedian Whoopi Goldberg, tycoon Donald Trump and actress Sarah Jessica Parker also attended.

Brutal take on tragedy unjustified and missed opportunity
I
am writing with regard to an article published in Friday morning’s metro Herald regarding the sad details of the events in Charleville, Co Cork. a line in the article read ‘a well-informed source said: “the place is like a butcher’s parlour, or an abbatoir. those poor little boys suffered a shocking death.”’ i believe this sentence to be incredibly insensitive. Such graphic detail was not required or requested and in my opinion, does not serve the public interest. i firmly believe that the article was very well placed to draw attention to rising mental health and suicide problems among young people and particularly, among the traveller community. instead, the article has sensationalised the tragic end to three lives in a small, close knit community. the above sentence was particularly grim and i question the validity of printing it as a result.
Currently, the traveller suicide rate is six times that of the national settled population, and for men specifically it is seven times higher. incidences of mental health problems are extremely widespread and members of the community express anxiety and discomfort when talking about mental health concerns. Your article could have drawn attention to suicide support services, mental health awareness for young people, victim support organisations and traveller support structures, but it did not. this article made victims of those children all over again, rehashing their cruel end in technicolour. the public interest was not served here and i believe an apology is due, not just for this family, but for the sake of the many families who have suffered the aftermath of such a situation and who do not need such brutal reminders. Anguish of X Factor hopeful
Woe: Monica with Savvakis and a pal
SIMON COWELL and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini may be hungry for success from their latest batch of X Factor wannabes, but that didn’t stop them popping out for a Chinese takeaway. Despite both being millionaires more used to Michelin-starred restaurants, the reunited duo headed to Chezza’s favourite oriental eatery, Kwak Pao in Newcastle, after her brother Garry Tweedy called in their €100 order. Owner Kevin Shek said: ‘Garry rang to put in the order and said Cheryl would pop in to see us. She has been coming here for years and wanted to say hello. But it was a massive surprise when Simon Cowell came in with her.’ And Cowell will have been hoping the fortune cookies came up trumps after the show’s ratings fell 500,000 from first-week figures of 10.6million. However, the results were a 600,000 improvement on last year as X Factor prepares to battle Strictly Come Dancing for viewers.
by jEnni McknigHT Monica Michael has vowed to win the contest in memory of Savvakis Georgiou, who was at her audition for the show just last month. The 24-year-old reduced judge Cheryl FernandezVersini to tears as she performed her own song, Pretty Little Sister, on Saturday’s edition of the show. But days after the recording her joy turned to despair when Mr Georgiou, 18, died on holiday in Ayia Napa. Ms Michael said yesterday: ‘The pool was so dirty nobody could see his body at the bottom. If it was not for the fact it was so filthy maybe someone could have seen him sooner and saved his life.’

4 Alex Polizzi: The Fixer This week, sausages
3 Banshee Antony Starr plays anti-hero Hood
1 True Blood
Fox, 9pm Man up, Blooders – it’s the last ever episode of the vampire drama. It’s been a rough ride at times but at its God Hates Fangs best True Blood was hot stuff, so we’ll be slugging a shot of V as we bid Sookie, Bill, Jason and the rest a nostalgic farewell. The episode title is Thank You (we do) but it should be Kill Bill – Mr Compton wants Sookie to top him in order to set her free. Sob.
2 Today’s Film: The Master
Sky Select, 7.40pm The death in February of Philip Seymour Hoffman robbed cinema of one of its most compelling actors. In this Oscar-nominated 2012 drama, Hoffman plays a charismatic cult leader who may – or may not – be based on Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. Also starring Joaquin Phoenix.
3 Banshee
Sky Atlantic, 10.15pm The all guns and fists blazing drama set in a small Pennsylvania town builds to its season two finale as you might expect – in a hail of flashbacks and bullets. Antony Starr, as anti-hero Hood, has the charm to give Banshee its human edge.
1 True Blood Say goodbye to Sookie and the Bon Temps gang
4 Alex Polizzi: The Fixer
BBC2, 9pm
It was beer last week, now it’s sausages – business guru Alex Polizzi is after the common touch as she lends her expertise to struggling small businesses. The Keebles of Yorkshire need to get their prize bangers on supermarket shelves but first Alex has to sort out the less than sizzling staff.

RTÉ1, 9.35pm In this new two-part documentary series filmed behind the walls of Ireland’s women’s prisons, we get a rare glimpse into a world so few of us see. In Ireland today, more than 4,000 people are in prison. Fewer than 200 of them are women. Prisoners, who

And it turns out there is indeed, as he might be Alfie’s saviour in his great hour of financial need. Banged up Stacey, meanwhile, is intent on unlocking a grim secret from the past – and Lauren is the key.
8 Cops And Robbers
C4, 9pm Does crime pay? This short series turns the spotlight on some of the UK’s most prolific serial offenders and you can’t help but warm (not) to Jason, who takes pride in his criminal resumé. Expect him to turn up on next year’s Celebrity Big Brother.
9 The Rules Of Abstraction With Matthew Collings BBC4, 10pm That’s abstraction as in abstract art and art writer Collings makes a brave fist of interpreting an art form where the
attraction is very much in the eye of the beholder. Works by abstract greats Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko help Collings warm to his theme.

BBC1, 10.35pm
Sarah Solemani, the blissfully slobby Becky in Him & Her, is both writer and star of this bittersweet tale. She’s a young bride-to-be who suffers a nasty attack of pre-wedding nerves when a bout of secret-sharing reveals she might not know fiancé Tom (Rupert Evans) as well as she thought.

We’ve grown up with our fans Amy Dawson takes tea with The Saturdays as they prepare to rock Dublin with tracks from their new greatest hits album

hen six chatty women descend upon an afternoon tea at a London hotel, you know you’re in for an interesting couple of hours. And one thing’s for sure: after six years together, The Saturdays still have plenty to say to each other. The conversation pings between the Fifty Shades Of Grey audiobook, the ‘nostalgic’ scent of Lynx Africa and the perils of group chat on WhatsApp – not to mention their new greatest hits compilation and a forthcoming UK tour. But the girls instantly quash all rumours of an impending split, and insist the idea of a greatest hits album is just a milestone moment along their path rather than a marker of the end. They’re even about to put an album of new material out, probably later this year. With three members of the group now mothers, there had been much speculation as to whether The Saturdays would continue the popstar life post-babydom. But, says Rochelle humes (married to JLS’s Marvin), it’s actually easier to balance motherhood with a singing career than with a regular nine-tofive. ‘People always say: “how do you do it?” but we’re in a lucky position where we can bring the kids to work if we want,’ she says. ‘Don’t get me wrong, there are times when it’s a lot on the brain. But that’s every working mum, isn’t it? Our mums always worked, it’s what we’ve grown up with.’
Your girl band five-a-day: Una Foden, Vanessa White, Rochelle Humes, Frankie Bridge and Mollie King The Saturdays are clearly raring to get back out on the road and chat eagerly about their Kylie-style show-stopping costumes. Dressed down, relatively speaking, today they still look super-glam by any normal standards – all perfect hair, nails and shiny white teeth. Yet they insist they feel the same insecurities and pressures as anyone. Frankie Bridge, who has openly suffered with depression and anxiety, is particularly vocal about the subject.
The show must go on! The Saturdays have had a few onstage disasters – but that’s all part of the fun…
Rochelle: I absolutely love blancmange but none of the girls had ever heard of it, and when I got them to try it they all said it was disgusting. So I ended up eating a huge bowl of it by myself to prove a point. Next thing you know, I’m coming up on stage through a trapdoor feeling like
‘woah!’ I had to run off stage and be sick, like an over-excited kid at a party. Una: A few years ago I was wearing one of those awful 1990s chainmail handkerchief tops... I have no idea why I was wearing it, because it wasn’t even the 1990s. It did up with just a few strings at the back, and they snapped just as I was
‘Girls need to be aware that everyone can paint the perfect picture online, even if everything isn’t really that great,’ she says. ‘And that’s what makes you feel insecure. even I feel it, when I look at other people’s Instagram. I’ve been papped so many times looking awful and it does actually really upset you. But I refuse to walk around in make-up, heels and sunglasses every day of my life. everyone’s allowed a day where they look crap
going on stage. I had to desperately hold it together! VaneSSa: I tore a ligament just as we were going on stage. I was the last one on so the girls were up there going for gold, wondering where on earth I was. I was in agony, but actually carried on singing from where I fell – I think it was the panic. I came back on in a wheelchair later in the show.
– our friends feel the same. The difference is they can choose which pictures go up in public and we can’t.’ Whatever the press or the public has to say about them, The Saturdays insist they only really care about the opinions of one group of people – their fans. ‘They’re why we’re still here today, it’s nothing to do with the critics,’ says Una Foden. ‘We’ve had some fans that have been there from the beginning, who we really recognise and have sort of got to know by now, and it’s really nice that we’ve grown up with them. We don’t have the same frenzied hysteria like the boy bands, they don’t want to marry us! It’s more like they want to be our friend, and we love that.’
The Saturdays’ Finest Selection: The Greatest Hits album is out now. The Greatest Hits tour comes to the 3Arena on Sep 17
I can’t wait to go on Strictly
Newlywed Frankie Bridge will shortly be starring in Strictly Come Dancing – alongside the likes of Pixie Lott, Mark Wright and Gregg Wallace. Is she excited? ‘Strictly is something I have always wanted to do,’ she says. ‘I’m such a massive fan of the show, as is my whole family. I dance a lot in The Saturdays, of course, but it’s completely different. I’m still learning what each of the dances is called, never mind how you do them.’ The series kicks off while The Saturdays are on tour. ‘I’ll be learning the first dance while on the road and rehearsing all across the country in any downtime I have,’ says Frankie. ‘So September will be fullon but I’m used to being busy. Wayne [Bridge, Frankie’s footballer husband, left] is always so supportive of everything I do and he’s really excited for me about this.’

fter making three LPs of meat-andpotatoes indie pop, the Kooks took three years out to ponder a change in direction. the result is what lead singer Luke Pritchard describes as a ‘fusion world music album’, one that teams them up with a hip hop producer that no one has ever heard of called Inflo while they get – rather cautiously – funky. It’s admirable to see a band leap outside their comfort zone. Unfortunately, much of this LP sees the Kooks running through all the ham-fisted gestures that signify ‘funk’ for the cloth-eared rock band: Prince-like falsetto squawks, trebly guitar riffs and a tendency to substitute wellcrafted melodies for strangulated hollering. the lyrics are, at best, daft. the surrealist night-

Frank Ocean, and an unflinching lyrical honesty that might make even Fiona Apple wince, there’s a definite UK edge to her modernism that lines Banks up alongside Jamie Woon, James Blake and The xx. Add the fact her second EP was entitled London to the list of English producers who have worked on Goddess – Lil Silva (her chief collaborator), Sohn, Al Shux, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Woon – and she’s looking quite the Anglophile. The second thing that strikes you about this record is that 14 tracks is simply too many, especially since they include three from London,
Making a ninth LP is a tough challenge but this NYC art-pop trio met it by changing their MO – recording as a band rather than individually and relying heavily on improvisation and analogue, acoustic instruments. How to beat the student Having trouble finding accommodation for college? Fear not, there are some great new schemes out there to help students struggling to put a roof over their heads, writes Christina Finn
Y
OU THINK everything is rosy – you did well in your Leaving Cert, you got the points and your first choice college course. However, now you find you have nowhere to live. The challenge students are facing to find accommodation has been particularly tough this year, with student unions reporting that students are being forced to either travel huge distances to get to college from their home town or are choosing to defer their college place altogether. So, what do you do if you can’t find any accommodation? The first thing to do is not to panic and make a snap decision to put off your college place. Speaking to Metro Herald, Brian Gormley from DIT Student Services said they are not hearing about any students defer-
ring from DIT, saying they have done a review and no student is stating that is the reason for deferring. However, he said they were very conscious that there is a shortage of accommodation and students are finding it difficult. Mr Gormley said that students need to look at all their options. He said there are many ‘digs’ available out there for students, which he said are a great option for first year students and can be a lot cheaper. Many universities list ‘digs’ accommodation on their websites, while there are also digs listings on Daft.ie as well as Getdigs.ie. ‘Digs were very popular in the ’80s and ’90s and the students that we have talked to that are in them this year are very happy, even more so than those that live on campus,’ he said. ‘There is a perception perhaps that
when you are in digs you live with a landlady and you have to say when you will be home and where you are going, etc, but it is not like that. It is more like a house share arrangement where you live with someone, perhaps a family or a young couple who want to make some extra cash on their spare room,’ he said. He urged students not to defer over a matter of where to live. ‘I think it would be shortsighted for a student to make such a decision. They need to look at all the options,’ he said. He said that the student accommodation situation could get even worse before it gets better, as we are entering a peak time when the Erasmus students come over to Ireland and look for somewhere to stay. ‘This is the group that could find it very difficult. Most students have been advised not to pay any deposits until they view a property, so they are literally going to be arriving soon and on the hunt,’ said Mr Gormley. With the talk of a resurgence with digs, a young Irish startup company offers online

to alleviate the accommodation crisis by pairing socially responsible students with senior members of the community. The initiative teams up students and member of the senior community, mainly around the UCD area, in an arrangement that suits everyone. Speaking to Aoife Buckley from Generation Accommodation, she said they have been extremely busy with people contacting them, saying they have had more than 60 applications in the last couple of weeks. ‘It suits everyone. Many of the houses are close to the college and the homeowner gets either the company or cash they need,’ she said. Ms Buckley said people shouldn’t be worried about not being able to head out when they like as ‘there are no restrictions’. This is an idea that she said could be expanded out to other colleges, saying while initially it was just for UCD students, other students from universities like Trinity College and DCU have also got in touch with them. Mr Gormley commended initiatives like Generation Accommodation saying it was good to see someone thinking outside the box in order to tackle this accommodation crisis.

kIlkEnny..................................3-22 TIPPERARy.................................1-28 by pAuL kEAnE In the press room after this epic contest, Brian Cody was asked a pretty simple question – so is it relief or disappointment? ‘to be honest, I don’t know,’ replied the canny Kilkenny manager. ‘I have no real strong, phenomenal feelings. You want to win, you don’t want to lose. I’m just as I am, to be honest.’ Clearly, Cody is already in battle mode ahead of the replay in three weeks’ time, giving absolutely nothing away. A little later again, his players were unavailable for interview, en masse, as they boarded the team bus so it’s hard to say exactly how the favourites feel now. One presumes that, if he was completely honest, Cody is quite happy to have a second chance to take down tipperary. tipp missed half a dozen good goal chances, including two penalties, and had an injury-time free to win it but John O’Dwyer was unable to convert. the man nicknamed ‘Bubbles’ initially
‘Tipp should have won this, they had the best chances’ stuck his hand in the air to celebrate, though hawk-eye deemed his puck had gone fractionally wide. And so stalemate reigned and the sides must return to Croke Park on Saturday, September 27, for a 5pm reunion. It’s the third year running that the final has ended in a draw. Amazingly, in the six games that both teams have played in this year’s Championship, there’s just two points between them. tipp should have won this one. Aside from the penalties, Lar Corbett flashed a shot off the bar while Gearoid Ryan and Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher missed great chances. Kilkenny were more efficient and it’s tough to know how they can significantly improve. Still, it also remains a fact that Kilkenny have only lost once to tipp since 1991 and obviously haven’t lost any of that appetite for destruction.

Tipperary and Kilkenny bosses Eamon O’ Shea and Brian Cody shake on a replay
O’sHEA Tipps HAT TO finAL RivALs EamOn O’SHEa suspected it may not be his Tipperary team’s day when they missed goal opportunity after goal opportunity. The 2010 champions wasted half a dozen good goal chances including two penalties. ‘at one stage, they are not going in and you wonder is it going to happen for us,’ said the Tipperary manager. “But in another sense you think, ‘how are they (the players) going to get themselves out of this’ because you
tipp moved 1-9 to 0-6 ahead with some thrilling hurling and a goal from ‘Bonner’ Maher but by half-time their lead was down to two. the first of Richie Power’s two goals meant Kilkenny trailed just 1-11 to 1-13 at half-time. But I thought there was a lot of resolve and a resilience in them and that’s the main thing.” Tipp showed real character to secure the extra date with the game’s last three points. ‘We could have won it and we might have lost it. We were playing against a fantastic team don’t forget. I think their display was fantastic.’ goal. It asked serious questions of tipp whose character has often been queried. eamon O’Shea’s side looked like they might cave in under the pressure, particularly when Kilkenny went four up after Power’s second goal. Hotshot Walsh fires young Cats to victory Back in april, Dublin beat kilkenny by 2-8 to 0-3 in the first round of the minor championship and rightly looked forward to a long season ahead. Five months on, Dublin are long gone and the cats are all-Ireland champions for a record 21st time. It’s a remarkable turnaround and nobody deserves it more than young corner-forward John Walsh, who shot a stunning 2-5. kilkenny manager Pat Hoban revealed afterwards that he was particularly ‘thrilled’ for exciting talent Walsh whose mother died earlier this year. Walsh delivered five points in the firsthalf at croke Park and notched his two

We gave him his chance today and he really took it. ‘It’s been a tough year for John because his mother died back in march. On a personal level, I’m really thrilled for him. ‘He’s been showing good form in
training of late and we all trusted him that he’d deliver on the big day. Thank God he did.’ Limerick were billed as strong favourites as they chased a first title since 1984 but played catch up throughout. They were only ahead briefly late in the first-half and kilkenny led by 0-12 to 0-10 at the break. The game turned decisively in kilkenny’s favour in the third quarter. Limerick missed two great goal chances and kilkenny punished them, scoring their first through Walsh in the 40th minute and sealing victory with his second.
n What qualities are needed to deal with the pressure at the Ryder Cup, as a player or captain? All the players are used to dealing with pressure so the key for them is to do exactly what they do in the other 51 weeks of the year. As for the captain, one of the most important things he can do is create the right environment which enables each guy in the team to go out and play his best. n What have you learned from previous captains? I’ve been very fortunate to play under some of the great names of European golf and have two former winning captains – Sam Torrance and Jose Maria Olazabal – on my backroom team. I like to think I have learned a little bit from all of them. n How much of an edge do Europe possess, with four players among the top five in the world? While we accept, and will embrace, the fact we are favourites with the bookmakers, we are also under no illusion about just how tough a task we face against a very strong American team. n What are the strengths of your team? We have 12 world-class players who have produced some of the best golf seen on either side of the Atlantic this year. We have major champions in our
‘I’ve played under some of the greats – I have learned a bit from all of them’ ranks as well as the winners of the flagship events on the European Tour and the PGA Tour. n Can you assess Rory McIlroy’s magnificent year? How much of an inspiration is he to the team? Obviously he has had a superb season and it was fantastic to see him win his third and fourth majors this year in style. Rory has been very much an integral part of the last two teams and I have no doubt he’ll play a major role at Gleneagles as well. n You must be looking forward to pitting your wits against Tom Watson. Everyone knows Tom was my boyhood hero, so it’s a thrill to be going up against him. I know he’s going to bring a lot of respect and he’s going to get a lot of respect from the crowd too. n Talk us through your winning putt in 2002. The main feeling was one of excitement and, to be honest, I couldn’t wait to hit it. I’d holed a great putt on the 17th and I knew I was going to hit another one on the 18th. LeWIs HamILton was relieved he was able to keep his cool on a day when nico Rosberg handed him a major lifeline in this year’s world title fight. a fortnight after his collision with Hamilton in Belgium, incurring the wrath and a fine from mercedes, Rosberg blundered midway through the Italian Grand Prix when leading at monza. Hamilton needed no second invitation to take full advantage, bringing his car home ahead of his rival by three seconds and closing the gap to 22 points in the drivers’ standings with six races to go. off the line, Hamilton was bogged down by a race-start mode issue and from his first pole for eight races dropped to fourth by the opening chicane, while Rosberg powered away into the lead. The strangest stories from the world of sport
Bayern continue to seat the example Bayern Munich showed the nice side of the professional game when they answered a call for help from a school in Macedonia. Teachers in Dollogozhda were looking to upgrade the facilities at their ground for their students. So in a letter penned on behalf of the school by Bayern’s worldwide fan club, they wrote to the Bundesliga champions to ask if they could get
their hands on 100 of the seats the German side were disposing of during the renovation of the South Stand at the allianz arena. To their delight, Bayern sent the 100 seats they asked for, plus another 155 for good measure, and even paid for them to be installed. The teachers will now be hoping their team can take inspiration from the stands to Freebie: Bayern seats replicate Bayern on the pitch too.

EuRO quALifiER rep of irelanD .................................2 georgia............................................... 1 by pARAic MORgAn Aiden McGeAdy launched Martin O’neill’s competitive reign as Rep of ireland boss in style with a match-winning euro 2016 qualifier double in Georgia. The Rep of ireland looked likely to have to settle for a point at the Boris Paichadze dinamo Arena in Tbilisi after Tornike Okriashvili’s piledriver had cancelled out McGeady 24th-minute opener. But with time running down, the everton winger – who worked under O’neill during his time as Celtic manager – curled home a 90thminute winner which ensured ireland headed back to dublin with the opening night win upon which they had set their hearts. McGeady turned in arguably the best performance of his international career on a night when he collected his 70th cap, and he undoubtedly made the difference between two well-matched sides. Victory extended the Republic’s 100 per cent record against Georgia to six games and will send them into next month’s double-header against minnows Gibraltar and group favourites Germany brimming with confidence. O’neill surprised a few by naming Hull midfielder Stephen Quinn in the centre of his midfield five, with Stoke striker Jon Walters lining up on the right and McGeady occupying the left-wing berth earmarked for James McClean before he was ruled out by injury. Central defender Solomon Kverkvelia had to hack away a first-minute Walters cross at fullstretch, and Guram Kashia had to be equally alert 18 minutes later after McGeady had tricked his way past wing-back Ucha Lobzhanidze and sent a teasing ball into the middle. Georgia gradually eased their way into the game and after david Forde, preferred in goal

Mcgeady double gets O’neill reign off to perfect start to 38-year-old Shay Given, had managed to get just enough on nikoloz Gelashvili’s rasping drive, Lobzhanidze came close to connecting with Kverkvelia’s flick-on at the far post. But they fell behind within seconds when Robbie Keane allowed the ball to run to James McCarthy and he drew his man before sliding McGeady in to finish with ease. O’neill and assistant Roy Keane leapt from the bench in celebration. Skipper Jaba Kankava saw a 34th-minute strike deflected just wide but Georgia were level within four minutes when Okriashvili picked up possession on the right and after turning away from John O’Shea – the only survivor from ireland’s last visit to the city in 2003 – and then
Stephen Ward thumped a dipping effort over Forde and into the net. in the second-half Georgia returned determined to regain the momentum with which they had ended the first and committed men to the search for an early lead. Robbie Keane hacked away an Okriashvili effort in the 52nd minute, then Forde had to be on his toes to clutch Jano Ananidze’s low cross to his chest seconds later with Gelashvili looming. But it was opposite number Roin Kvashvadze, a half-time replacement for Giorgi Loria, who threw himself desperately to his left as McGeady curled a shot inches wide from a well-worked 57th-minute free-kick. Keane scuffed a volley harmlessly out of play at the far post, before
McGeady cut inside and forced Kvashvadze to pluck the ball from underneath his crossbar. However, as the game entered the closing stages, it was the Georgians who were building up a head of steam, and O’neill responded with 14 minutes remaining by replacing Quinn and Keane with Robbie Brady and Shane Long. in the meantime, McGeady had squandered yet another opportunity when he lashed at a dropping ball on the edge of the penalty area, slicing it wide when greater composure might have served him better. However, he made no mistake when presented with another chance with seconds of normal time remaining, accepting Seamus Coleman’s pass before stepping on to his left foot and curled home a precious winner.

By Georgia – McGeady’s done it now Aiden McGeAdy was the hero as the Rep of ireland launched their euro 2106 qualifying campaign with a dramatic late victory in Georgia. The everton winger struck twice, the second of them in the 90th minute, to clinch a 2-1 win at the Boris Paichadze dinamo Arena in Tbilisi and earn the plaudits of both manager Martin O’neill and skipper Robbie Keane. O’neill said: ‘He was the only player on the field that was scoring the goal. He really is a fantastic talent. ‘ H e probably thinks at this age he should have been up there with the very finest
by SAM MCCOISTÉLA players. He has that talent and he showed that tonight.’ Long-time team-mate Keane was equally effusive after seeing McGeady, who had opened the scoring with 24 minutes gone, snatch the points at the death after turning on the edge of the penalty area and curling a delicious shot past substitute keeper Roin Kvashvadze.
‘The turn, the touch – only he could do that’ Keane said: ‘if you score a goal like that, you deserve to win the game. if anyone else did that, the top players in the world, you would be talking about it for a long time. ‘The turn, the touch, the finish – only he could do that. no one else on that field would have been able to do that.’ McGeady was applauded back into the away dressing room after conducting a series of interviews
following the final whistle, and admitted he did not know what to do with himself. ‘i’d been doing a few interviews outside while the manager was talking to the team about the game. i was a bit awkward when it happened, i didn’t know how to react really. it was nice.’ Asked about his decisive strike, he added: ‘The second goal was all about concentrating on my touch. i had my back to the goal, i just thought i’d try something. it came off for me. it doesn’t happen very often, but thankfully it went in.’ McGeady’s 24th-minute strike gave ireland an early advantage which was cancelled out in spectacular style by Tornike Okriashvili seven minutes before half-time. The game looked to be heading for a draw until the ireland midfielder span and delivered the denouement to send the small band of travelling supporters into raptures. O’neill said: ‘There was moments in the second half when it might have been worrying for us, but we’ve seen it through.’
‘Battle on’ says Cats boss as replay looms for third year in a row
Rematch ahead: Brian Cody
BRIAN Cody says the ‘battle is on’ again for the MacCarthy Cup after his Kilkenny side’s incredible AllIreland final draw with Tipperary. Tipperary scored the last three points of the game including a John O’Dwyer equaliser to secure a dramatic 1-28 to 3-22 draw. The replay will take place back at Croke Park on Saturday, September 27 and means an unplanned extra pay day for the GAA for the third year running. O’Dwyer could have won it for Tipp, but blasted a 71st-minute, long-range free just wide. But Cody reckons Tipperary shouldn’t have had the opportunity to win the final with the last gasp
shot. When suggested by a reporter that they thought it wasn’t a free, Cody said: ‘So did I. I thought it might have been for us to be honest. I presumed it was for us but look, it wasn’t. If it had gone over the bar it was their game, end of story, so thanks be to God it didn’t.
‘I f*****g knew it was gone wide’ ‘I kind of thought he’d scored it because he’s good at them. I didn’t realise it was the last puck of the game either. So, at the time, I reckoned we’d get one back if they did score. But he’s good at them for
sure and it was very close.’ The Cats boss added: ‘The battle is on.’ ‘You go ahead and prepare again. Could it go either way? Yes, it could.’ Asked if he ever considered stalemate as an outcome, the ninetime All-Ireland winning manager insisted: ‘No, I didn’t.’ Tipperary star Padraic Maher said he was standing behind O’Dwyer’s late free which was confirmed as a wide by Hawk-Eye. ‘I didn’t even look at the HawkEye outcome because I f*****g knew it was gone wide,’ said Maher. ‘That’s just the ups and downs of the game. It was fantastic stuff.’
Cody said he could scarcely believe that a third final in a row has now ended in a draw. ‘Yeah, it’s amazing. I suppose that three in a row have been draws, it’s amazing to think it’s panned out like that,’ he continued. ‘They had dominance and we had dominance. It was a great game, I would imagine, to be able to sit back and watch and relax.’ Kilkenny won the 2012 final after a replay though Cody doesn’t believe that’s significant. ‘I’m sure Tipperary are more than capable of preparing properly for the replay. There’s no magic in it.’
