Will royal baby news swing Scottish vote on independence?
‘I can’t wait to see my brother suffer,’ says gloating Harry
PRINCE HARRY said he can’t wait to see his brother ‘suffer more’ as news of Kate’s pregnancy shoved him down the royal pecking order. The now fourth in line to the English throne was grinning broadly when he visited athletes arriving for the inaugural Invictus Games starting today in London. The prince said: ‘I can’t wait to see my brother suffer more.’ Quizzed over whether it might be a girl, he joked: ‘I would love to see him try and cope with that.’ He added later: ‘I hope the two of them have the opportunity to go through the process again with a little bit of peace and quiet.’ Meanwhile, his brother was opening The Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre Building. The baby will take its place in the order of succession behind Prince Charles, Princes William and older brother George.

CAMPAIGNERS hoping to keep Scotland in the UK were celebrating an unexpected boost yesterday after it was revealed that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant again. The announcement was seen as an 11th-hour boost for the faltering Better Together campaign – and came a day after the Queen reportedly voiced dismay at the possibility of Scotland leaving the Union. The duchess had been due to join her husband on a visit to the University of Oxford but was forced to pull out after falling ill with severe morning sickness. The change of plan prompted Clarence House to rush out news that the 32year-old was expecting, with just ten days until the referendum.

by DOMinic YEATMAn Campaigners on both sides of the debate rushed to voice their reactions on social media. Alisa Krinsky tweeted: ‘So, just as Scotland’s pro-independence vote gets a slight majority there’s an announcement that Kate is pregnant. Interesting timing?’ Sophie Warnes wrote: ‘Omg this is literally a ploy to try and stop Scotland from leaving!!’ Canuckuk tweeted: ‘Bad enough that Scotland didn’t get a baby panda but England had to show off an addition in their captive breeding programme.’ Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond was quick to tweet his congrat-
ulations using the couple’s littleknown Scottish titles, the ‘Earl and Countess of Strathearn’. Scottish Labour MP Thomas Docherty snapped: ‘Alex Salmond is absolutely shameless in his determination to shoehorn his obsession with independence into everything.’ Well-wishers shouted their congratulations at the duke as he arrived alone for the event at Oxford’s St Hugh’s College. He said: ‘She feels OK thanks, it’s been a tricky few days. We’re immensely thrilled, it’s great news. We hope things settle down and she feels a bit better. But it’s important that we focus on the big international and domestic news that’s going on.’

Incinerator vote to be snuffed out DUBLIN CITY councillors voted overwhelmingly against the planned waste incinerator for Poolbeg last night, but their wishes look likely to be overruled as the final decision rests with the unelected chief executives of the local authorities. The elected officials voted 52 to two against, with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown also voting against but Fingal voting in favour. The project has been a sore point for more than a decade, with councillors expressing fears about importing waste to make it viable and the level of waste below which the local authorities would be forced to compensate the operators.

been rejected by the site will be contacted to ask if they require mentoring. He said the scheme will also be open to anyone over the age of 18 ‘who feels they could do with help to improve their looks’. And he said he expects particular interest from single blokes from Ireland, who he insists are most in need of some styling and grooming tips.

Bank lending disappoints BANKS continue to show slow lending, as credit to private households continues its downward trend, according to figures released yesterday. Central Bank data shows that the total credit to Irish private households by the end of June this year amounted to €94.5billion, based on the balance sheets provided by resident credit institutions. This represents a quarterly decline of up to 0.8 per cent, marking the annual decline of 3.6 per cent.
Non-housing lending, or ‘other personal’ lending, amounted to 14 per cent of the total on-balance sheet credit at €13.6billion – a decrease of 6.2 per cent on the 12 months leading up to June 2014. This lending peaked in 2009, when the first quarter lending figures stood at €28.9billion. In addition, holiday homes or second home loans amounted to just one per cent of loans for house purchase in the same year period.
THOSE found guilty of child grooming will face sentences of up to 14 years imprisonment after a new bill was launched today to tackle child abuse. The bill, which focuses on the issue of sexual exploitation, was launched by Fine Gael TD and member of the Oireachtas Justice Committee Marcella Corcoran Kennedy. It follows a unanimous recommendation of the Oireachtas Committee to create specific and coherent legislation for the crime which has seen 30 children trafficked into Ireland in the past two years. Speaking at the launch, Ms Corcoran Kennedy said: ‘My short bill seeks to tidy up existing legislation in this area and introduce into Irish law the specific crime of child grooming, whether it takes place in the general community or online. It will ensure that those who seek to harm our children can find no hiding place in the law.’ According to the bill, those soliciting, requesting, encouraging, procuring or enticing a child to do any act, for the purpose of sexual exploitation, shall be guilty of an offence and face penalties of up to 14 years behind bars.

‘Gamechanger’ planes to give Ryanair a leg-up
by AiLEEn DOnEgAn
THREE Dubliners were lauded as ‘heroes’ yesterday in a ceremony celebrating Ireland’s often unsung stars in society. Nine-year-old Quaid Cleland got the Youth prize at the Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards for his ‘crusade’ to get Irish Sign Language used on this year’s Late Late Toy Show. Fellow Dubliner Kevin Stanley was honoured with a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Award after more than 30 years’ service in the NGO sector. For the fourth consecutive year, the public was asked to nominate a ‘hero’ with winners chosen by a judging panel. The third Dublin winner was Sandyford woman Valerie McCabe-Slattery, who earned the Family Award for her continued care to her father, 95, who has hearing loss, despite the death of her husband last year, and maintaining two jobs. Clare-woman Maureen Cronin, 97, earned a gong for her exceptional role in getting the marriage ban for school teachers lifted in the 1950s. Ben Wallace, 15, from Kildare won the Triumph Over Adversity Award after his mother nominated him for his courage during chemotherapy.
If the hat fits: Quaid Cleland, 9, from Rathfarnham with 97-year-old Maureen Cronin from Clare receiving their 2014 Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards at Buswells Hotel. Having defied her orders to discontinue her career after her marriage – which was required for newly wedded civil servants – Ms Cronin went on to work in Limerick for a whole year unpaid regardless, helping abolish the ban

Hammer attack on gay flatmate These are the horrific head injuries suffered by a gay man after his flatmate attacked him with a hammer while he slept. Cross dressing Connor huntley was 18 when he suffered the onslaught at the flat he shared with Joseph Williams in Margate, Kent, in the UK in May last year. his injuries were described as ‘life-changing’ and ‘little short of catastrophic’ as 21-year-old Williams was sentenced to 14 years in prison at London’s Old Bailey for attempted murder. Mr huntley now suffers from epilepsy and his body movement has been affected, prosecutor Philip Bennetts QC told the court.

sentencing, judge Jeremy Donne QC told Williams: ‘On May 28, 2013, you picked up a hammer, went into the bedroom of your sleeping flatmate and brought it down two times on his head. Not only did it fracture his skull but it was embedded in his brain. ‘The injuries suffered by Connor huntley were little short of catastrophic. They were life-changing. It is fortunate in the extreme for both him, as for you, that he did not die. ‘That was only down to the skill of the medical personnel treating him, but he will never be able to live an ordinary life.
‘he will be never be able to enjoy all the things that young people enjoy doing. You have taken away a good part of his life.’ Williams will serve his sentence in a high security hospital until he his deemed fit to leave after the court found that he had been suffering mental health issues at the time of the attack. Afterwards the attacker told a 999 operator what he had done, saying his mental health had ‘deteriorated’, the court heard. Kent Police went to the flat in Cliftonville, Margate, and found Mr huntley on a blood-splattered inflatable air bed still alive, but with the claw hammer embedded in his head.
Robber commits arseon Trousers fall down during bungled raid AN ARMED thief made a ‘comedy of errors’ when his trousers slipped while raiding a newsagent. The hooded, masked robber was handed cash by a shopworker after threatening him with a machete. However, success turned to failure when the raider’s trousers slipped, revealing his behind. He spent a minute trying to stuff the notes into a pocket – but his hood fell down, partially revealing his face. ‘Watching the CCTV is like watching a comedy of errors,’ said Det Con Andrea Holden-Cullum of Greater Manchester Police. ‘However… this is no laughing matter. He threatened a shopkeeper with a large knife and also intimated he would stab the victim.’

‘Focus on suicide’
Sad ffarewell: ll: The ffuneral al of Thomas and Patrick O’Driscoll, left and above, in Charleville, Co Cork Picture: PA
Heartbreak as brothers laid to rest
The deaths of twin boys and their older brother in an apparent murder-suicide should be a lesson for people to do more to get young men to talk about their problems, their funeral has heard. In heart-rending scenes after the mass at holy Cross Church, Charleville, Co Cork, white coffins holding the bodies of nine-year-old Thomas and Patrick O’Driscoll were carried shoulder high through the town. As the remains of their elder brother Jonathan were kept in the church, the funeral cortege was led by about 30 youngsters walking behind a pick-up truck carrying huge floral tributes. They were followed by a pony pulling a miniature canvas-covered caravan decorated with pictures of the twins. The boys’ parents, helen and Thomas, had travelled to Waterford last Thursday – the day of their deaths – to buy the wagon as a present for them. On top of a black hearse sat a second set of beautifully decorated wreaths,

including a replica of the old-style Traveller caravan, two crossed blue and white hurleys and a horseshoe. In a moving homily, Fr Tom Naughton, curate at holy Cross, said explanations for the boys’ deaths will not be answered ‘this side of the grave’. ‘But if these days have taught us anything at all, they challenge us to continue and to increase our efforts to understand and to assist, especially young males, to communicate the darkness that seems to be increasingly troubling young minds and hearts,’ he said. ‘It is possible that we have never had more activities and recreations, all sorts of noises and acquaintances around us yet, at the same time, it seems that never have people been so lonely.’ Thomas and Patrick were buried together in Charleville cemetery. Jonathan was later laid to rest with his maternal grandparents in Kilmallock.
Pope accepts resignation of scandal-hit Cardinal Brady
PoPe Francis yesterday accepted the resignation of Cardinal Sean Brady, the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland. The senior churchman whose final years as a clerical leader were dogged by abuse scandals, announced plans to step down on age grounds last month after turning 75, the standard retirement age in the church.
Archbishop eamon Martin will take over the role as Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. ‘I am looking forward to retirement, it will be good to have more time for family, friends and to follow the football,’ Dr Brady said. He faced repeated calls over the last few years from clerical sex abuse survivors to stand down.
SINN Féin leader Gerry Adams has called on the Government to prioritise suicide prevention ahead of International Suicide Prevention Day tomorrow. ‘There is not a community in the State that hasn’t been affected by suicide and this is now one of the major issues facing Irish society,’ he said. Calling for a ‘focus on tackling’ the issue, he cited a European Child Safety Alliance report this year that showed Ireland has the highest EU-wide rate of suicide in young women and the second highest rate among young men.

Jada scolds pal over ‘dark love’
Wedding’s off... but just to make her mum’s day FORMER boy band star Tom Parker has called off his wedding – to avoid a clash with his future mother-in-law’s nuptials. But the former The Wanted star, 26, insists he still plans to marry long-term girlfriend Kelsey Hardwick – he just thinks her mother deserves to enjoy her time in the limelight first. ‘Her mum is getting married this year. They’ve been together for 12 years,’ he said.
The singer-turned-DJ, who has been dating actress Kelsey for three years, said the couple had talked about getting hitched this year but decided they ‘don’t want to rain on her mum’s parade’. So, for now, the chart-topper is aiming to get back to No 1 – but this time as a DJ, he told Guilty Pleasures in an exclusive chat. And he sees his DJ idol Calvin Harris as the
man to look to for inspiration. ‘Calvin started from the bottom and worked his way up,’ he said. He admits he would love to win a DJ residency – but has ruled out a summer session in Ibiza. ‘I’ve been there for a week and it ruined me. Imagine a whole summer of it? J e s u s C h r i s t ,’ he said.

WILL SMITH’S wife has penned an open letter to a friend she says is ‘drowning in dark love’. Jada Pinkett Smith left fans guessing as to the identity of the pal after posting the message on Facebook. The Gotham actress wrote: ‘I can’t say he doesn’t love you or you him, but it is excruciating to watch you drown in this “dark love”, full of abuse and addiction.’ The 42-year-old intriguingly added: ‘You have the right to experience whatever you please in this life... but so do I. I’m here when you are ready to choose an experience that won’t kill us both.’ Jada has suffered romance troubles of her own, according to rumours. She and 45-yearold Smith – who tied the knot in 1997 – are said to be in an open marriage.

Not putting hands up was retiring cardinal’s biggest sin
T
he Pope has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Sean Brady as Primate of All Ireland. But don’t take Cardinal Brady’s resignation as a mark that he regrets his role in the cover-up of clerical sex abuse. No, he was bound by canon law to resign upon reaching 75. he said he asked forgiveness, but for what? A few more specifics would be useful here. Mr Cranky, Dublin 7 ■ I am an Italian professional, living and working in Dublin for the past five years. I currently live in Capel Street and I have started to have some regrets about my choice to live in the city centre. every day myself and my flatmates see drug addicted people taking heroin in the middle of inner city streets such as Jervis Lane Upper. Druggies also broke into our building many times to get drugs and to have sex. The gardaí didn’t do anything.
It seems ridiculous to me that these people, who are a threat to the community, can get money from the dole entirely funded by taxpayers. Alberto ■ I’ve had my ‘Phil’ of that guy hogan. Why doesn’t someone throw him into the incinerator and hopefully he’ll just disappear? It was he who brought in bin charges. Now it’s water. What’s next? Charges on breathing? John Mc Evoy ■ The referee cost Mayo the All-Ireland semi-final and the referee nearly cost Kilkenny the final yesterday. The only truly amateur thing left in the GAA is the standard of refereeing. Sean ■ My favourite quote from Joan Rivers: ‘I’m definitely watching the emmys this year. My make-up team have been nominated for “special effects”’. Lorraine ■ I hope the git that graffitied the Merrion Square statue is caught. Wilde About Oscar

food&drink The idea of giving up meat had never occurred to áine Carlin, but when she looked into where her food came from, she knew she had to change
Ali Allen
Becoming a vegan G
lamorous fashion and food blogger Áine Carlin transformed her life and diet five years ago when she started living vegan. ‘I’d never even entertained the idea of becoming vegetarian, let alone immersing myself in a lifestyle that I’d believed to be restrictive and boring,’ she says. ‘I was (and still am) a total foodie, the kind of person whose thoughts turn to dinner immediately after finishing lunch. Now I am a vegan, my health has been transformed. I have lost weight, sleep better and increased my energy levels.’ originally from Derry, Carlin was working as an actress in Chicago when she began to question where her food came from. ‘I was a habitual meat eater. I began to look into farm practices and specifically meat. ‘To say I was horrified is an understatement. It really was a case of going to bed an omnivore re and waking up vegan,’ says Carlin In Keep It Vegan, Carlin aims to ‘demystify veganism’ with 100 recipes using standard supermarket ingredients.

ROSEMARY AND PEAR FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS Serves 2 For the whipped coconut cream: 400g can coconut milk, chilled overnight ◆ 100g icing sugar ◆ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For the pears: 2 pears, peeled, cored and sliced ◆ 50ml maple syrup ◆ 1 sprig rosemary For the toast: 1 banana, peeled ◆ 400ml coconut milk drink ◆ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ◆ 1 tablespoon cornflour ◆ 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon ◆ pinch of freshly grated nutmeg ◆ 1 tablespoon agave nectar ◆ 4 thick slices crusty white bread ◆ 2 tablespoons sunflower oil ◆ 1 tablespoon vegan margarine
METHOD Step 1 Remove the can of coconut milk from the fridge and carefully spoon off the nowhardened top layer into a mixing bowl – once you hit the liquid layer, stop. Add the sugar and vanilla extract and whisk vigorously with an electric mixer until fluffy and smooth. Put in the fridge until required. Step 2 Place the pear slices in a medium, non-stick frying pan along with the maple syrup and whole rosemary sprig and bring to a very gentle simmer. Cook for around 5 minutes or until the pears just begin to soften before carefully turning them over to cook for a further 4–5 minutes on the other side. Remove the rosemary sprig and transfer the pears to a dish until needed. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper.

Step 3 in a large, shallow dish, mash the banana and then whisk or blend it together with the coconut milk drink, vanilla extract, cornflour, cinnamon, nutmeg and agave until smooth. Arrange the pears and bread in two sandwiches. Step 4 Place the pear sandwiches into the banana and coconut mixture and let them absorb the liquid for 10 minutes, turning halfway through. Step 5 Heat the oil and margarine together in the frying pan over a medium heat. Add the sandwiches. Press firmly with the back of a spatula to compress the bread and ensure it gets golden on the bottom. Fry the sandwiches for 5-7min on each side. Remove from the pan and serve hot with a spoonful of the whipped coconut cream.

ony CEo Kazuo Hirai began his company’s press conference at IFA with a ‘wow’ count, poking fun at the number of times he’d subconsciously uttered the same word during his last major speech. It was a stroke of genius, given the kit Sony unveiled here did all the talking for him – notably new smartphones and a ludicrously lightweight tablet all sporting gamechanging features. The Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact boast Remote Play, meaning PlayStation 4 users can transfer games from console to mobile device and button-tap on the move. The trio support hi-res audio files offering superior ‘studio quality’ sound compared to MP3s, as does the €225 A17 Walkman, due out soon. The Z3 Compact marks the first time Sony has simultaneously released a mini version alongside its big brother, and the tech specs are almost identical, with a claimed battery life of up to two days. The Z3 Compact Tablet is the Japanese firm’s first ever eight-incher and is the lightest (0.6lbs) and thinnest (6.4mm) waterproof device in its class. The trio should drop by november, with prices to be confirmed. Wearables weren’t far behind; the €200 SmartWatch 3 injects some much-needed colour and inherits Google’s promising Android Wear

Kotor Bay, Montenegro ontenegro 28C Forget Portofino, Cannes and Capri, when it comes to chic European resorts, Montenegro’s Kotor Bay is where to head to. While there’s a hip scene shaping up around the megawatt Porto Montenegro development – a swanky marina attracting super-yachts with its designer shops, glitzy restaurants and luxury residences – there’s more to the bay than suntans and sequins. A Unesco World Heritage Site, Kotor Bay is unfeasibly pretty, with a striking fjord of clear water surrounded by lush, forested mountains. Its old town is also a delight with its 12th-century city walls, medieval piazzas and palazzos. If budget allows, stay at one of the starry boutique hotels at Porto Montenegro. Make sure you have a wander around the ancient city of Kotor, with its 4km of city walls – particularly stunning lit up at night. From the bay take a sailing boat to the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks, a small man-made islet with a preserved 17th-century church and charming museum. You’ll be moved. September is the perfect month to hop across to the Greek Islands. The searing heat of high summer is on the wane, the sea is warm and inviting, and the tourists have thinned out. Mykonos is one of the Cyclades’ most glamorous isles but it’s also one of the most laid-back places in which to zone out for a while. Sun-drenched beaches, such as the notorious Paradise Beach with its resident DJs, boutique hotels and a charming old town, pull in a jet-set crowd. The white-onwhite town centre has a famously warren-like
maze of streets. Deceptive at first, many of these narrow lanes have hidden gems, such as the dazzlingly cool Interni Restaurant (interni-restaurant.gr), tucked away in a hidden courtyard, which blends a Ranelagh vibe with a laid-back Aegean attitude (the food is pretty stellar too). A must is a cocktail or two at the waterfront lounge bar that is Caprice, in Mykonos’s Little Venice area – it’s worth it simply to have a drink in view of the town’s old windmills with the ocean at your feet (caprice.gr). For something a little more authentic,

Puglia, Italy 27C Often overlooked for its more manicured neighbour of Tuscany, Puglia, the eastern region that stretches down to the heel of Italy’s boot, is the country’s most underplayed gem. Dotted with olive groves and ancient fortified towns, you can find many gems – such as the turquoise waters and quiet beach at Casalabate, the baroque beauty of the Chiesa di Santa Croce in Lecce and the enchanting seaside town of Polignano a Mare, which inspired everybody’s favourite singalong tune, Volare. Unlike Tuscany, this sunny corner doesn’t attract many overseas tourists (a bonus). Rather, this is where the Italians themselves come to holiday, attracted by the temperate climate, fantastic seafood and an untouched
landscape. Whitewashed villages such as Ostuni and weird domeroofed trulli houses are a must-see, as are the Castellana Grotte, a series of spectacular caves with vast stretches of stalactites. Sure to take the spotlight from Bodrum as Turkey’s most chic resort is Alacati on Turkey’s Cesme peninsula. While a new batch of cool hotels, art galleries and boutiques are giving the coastal town a hip flavour, it retains – for the time being at least – a quaint, village-like feel. Whitewashed houses with blue shutters give a glimpse into the town’s Greek heritage, while the powder-white beaches and year-round breezes have long made this a popular spot for windsurfers. The food scene is especially vibrant and creative, meaning there are lots of great restaurants to choose from – such as Asma Yapragi, which serves local dishes in an authentic traditional dining room (asmayapragi.com.tr), and Alancha, located inside a converted windmill and specialising in molecular gastronomy (alancha.com). For something truly memorable, visit Noni’s House (cesmenonishouse.com), a hands-on home-style experience where you can wander in the vineyards, collect organic produce such as artichokes from the fields, and enjoy wine tasting and cooking. Rosberg’s costly italian slip was no Spa break i
Had a feeling lewis Hamilton would reassert his authority at Mercedes by winning the Italian Grand Prix, but the way it came about was a great surprise. The general consensus is where Nico Rosberg slightly misses out to Hamilton on speed, he makes up for with a cooler head. Therefore, for Nico to make an unforced error at the first chicane on lap nine, going straight on to rejoin the track, and to make the exact same mistake again on lap 29 as Hamilton bared down on him for the lead, is out of character. Such thinking sparked a conspiracy theory that raged through the paddock on Sunday afternoon: Was Rosberg instructed to make a mistake that would allow his team-mate through as part of his punishment for ruining Hamilton’s race at Spa? Tosh, I say. at 208mph – the speed from which F1 cars brake for turn one – mistakes are easy, even for a driver as skilled as Rosberg. Having built a comfortable buffer over Felipe Massa after nine laps I reckon Rosberg was feeling too relaxed. as for
‘At 208mph mistakes are easy, even for these drivers’ Chicanery: Hamilton takes the lead as Rosberg misses the chicane and, above, the pair on the podium
Tifosi turmoil as Ferrari fluff their lines DAyS don’t get much blacker than this for Ferrari. Fernando Alonso made his first retirement of the year on Sunday, right in front of a grandstand of Tifosi. Kimi Raikkonen came home ninth, which hardly warrants popping the Lambrusco. It will take time to turn the Scuderia’s fortunes around.
u Ferrari-engined Sauber are enduring even more troubled times, bottom of the standings with Caterham on nil points. Canadian billionaire Laurence Stroll is on the verge of buying the Swiss team, which has struggled for funds since BMW pulled out in 2010. The fashion tycoon has close links to Ferrari, particularly new team principal Marco Mattiaci. Fresh investment should see Sauber ducking and diving in the midfield rather than the back. Most of the attention was on president Luca di Montezemolo
at the weekend. He called a chaotic press conference
outside the Ferrari motorhome to announce he had nothing to announce. The Italian media had reported he was going to step down. My sources say Fiat, Ferrari’s parent company, want the aristocrat out but, with a threeyear contract in his safe at Maranello, that could cost them €50million.
buckling under pressure from the chasing Mercedes later on, I’d still put it down to a costly but unforced error. Thinking of turn one moments, I was dumbstruck by daniil Kvyat, who suffered a brakedisc failure as he leapt on the left pedal and somehow managed to keep the car pointing forwards and out of the barrier. I’m not sure if the pale and spotty 20-year-old has emerged from puberty yet but that ‘tank-slapper’ will have put some hairs on his chest. Rosberg sees his lead slashed from 29 points to 22 but it’s nothing to fret about just yet. lewis still has a long way to go. But we are set for it going down to the wire, and that’s not because of a conspiracy on Mercedes’ part. It is down to two ultracompetitive individuals who have good days and bad days on the track.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has defended outgoing champion Sebastian Vettel after another race in which he played second fiddle to team-mate daniel Ricciardo. of being beaten by a team-mate for the first time in his F1 career. Horner said: ‘It’s been a difficult year for Seb but that’s not been of his own making. daniel has driven incredibly well and all credit should be given to him for that. ‘His [Vettel] result wasn’t down to a lack of pace, it was how their different strategies worked out.’

A blatter blow for his rivals Fifa president slams FA and confirms he wants four more years in charge SEPP BlattEr has confirmed he will definitely stand for a fifth term as Fifa president and accompanied the announcement with a blast at the English Football association. Blatter (above), president since 1998, had said in 2011 he would stand down next year, but has now firmed up expectations he will run for another four years. the Fa was among the governing bodies that had publicly opposed him doing so – and Blatter claimed the organisation has ‘forgotten’ fair play
and was a bad loser following its humiliating defeat in bidding for the 2018 World Cup. His announcement yesterday comes after Uefa president Michel Platini’s decision not to stand for the post. Blatter said he has the backing of the majority of the national associations – although Fa chairman Greg Dyke was among those who spoke out against Blatter. Blatter said he ‘still respects’ Dyke, who is ‘a good guy’, but England should take defeat gracefully.

Empire building: Williams with her US Open trophy
Martina navratilova has backed Serena Williams to go on and match Steffi Graf’s open era record of 22 grand slam singles titles. Williams’ 6-3 6-3 victory over Caroline Wozniacki in the US open final on Sunday took her level with navratilova and Chris Evert on 18. the figure had been a big target for the american and she admitted it had weighed on her mind as she suffered early exits at the australian open, French open and Wimbledon. navratilova and Evert joined Williams on court at Flushing Meadows to present her with a commemorative tiffany bracelet marking the occasion. ‘We all thought it was a matter of when, not if, after she won here last year,’ said navratilova. ‘it took her the full year, but i think now she doesn’t have to think about it and she can just think about 22. that’s the target.’

Craig Young took five scalps as ireland eased to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Scotland in the first one Day international in Dublin. The 24-year-old medium-pacer helped limit the tourists at The Village in Malahide to 172 runs with figures of five for 46 on their way to being bowled out with nine overs remaining. ireland comfortably beat that total when Kevin o’Brien’s unbeaten half-century (56 not out) saw them home with plenty to spare as they finished on 173 for three. The Scots got off to a disappointing start as they lost Matty Cross for just nine runs after he edged Max Sorensen’s delivery to wicketkeeper Stuart Poynter. Young then made his introduction as he took Calum MacLeod (25) and Hamish gardiner (10) in quick succession. The Derry bowler took his third when he clean bowled Preston Mommsen (10) to leave the Scots in trouble at 62 for four. Michael Leask offered some resistance as he finished off a tidy 50 but when he and Safyaan Sharif (18) also fell to Young, Scotland’s hopes were done for. The irish got off to a steady start in reply and took their time building their response. They had scored just

New blue Fabregas will be Gunning for Arsenal by jON HARvEy CesC Fabregas is fully committed to the ‘important project’ at Chelsea but maintains he will always hold arsenal close to his heart. The former gunners captain signed for Chelsea after arsenal opted not to take up an option to bring him back from barcelona this summer. Fabregas joined the gunners from his boyhood club as a teenager and developed into one of the most dynamic midfielders in the game during his eight years at the club, before returning to the Nou Camp in august 2011. He won the Primera Division, a Copa del ray and the Fifa Club World Cup during his three-years at barca before joining the blues. Long winter ahead for Chelsea faithful Morrison’s scissor kick
ScoTlanD may have lost their opening Euro qualifier in Germany but James Morrison ensured that the Scots still left with their heads held high. Morrison was seen enjoying a game
of rock-paper-scissors with Germany’s christoph Kramer as Marco Reus received treatment. Kramer later revealed both went with scissors earning the Scots a creditable draw.
Chelsea fans have had plenty to cheer so far this season after a perfect start to the new campaign. however, the months ahead are looking less rosy if you happen to be the proud owner of the official club calendar. Fans will have to put up with long-since-departed Juan Mata – who has been a Manchester United player since January – adorning their bedroom walls in October, while the non-firing trio of Fernando Torres, samuel eto’o and Demba Ba will give supporters a bleak reminder of barren times gone by in November. still, there is always December and the thought of sharing Christmas with, oh, Manchester City’s Frank lampard.
