‘Don’t leave social housing to chance’

President Michael d Higgins has said he hopes the lessons of doomed and delayed housing regeneration schemes have been learned. Opening part of the rebuilt st Michael’s estate in inchicore, dublin – now known as thornton Heights – the President praised the tenacity of local women who helped keep the project on track. the €16.9million redevelopment is just two acres of a 14-acre site and is home to ten houses and 65 apartments, a creche and community centre. President Higgins said too many draft plans for the betterment of st Michael’s estate had come to nothing since the 1990s. ‘too many new starts have been announced. too many times have st Michael’s estate’s residents’ hopes been dashed, their work and efforts gone to waste,’ he said. ‘there was a squandering of trust and

of the hard-won relationships that had been forged over the years. ‘the housing needs of the residents were left to the fortunes of speculative ventures. But that now is the past, from which – i hope – we have learned.’ the new thornton Heights homes – named after dr Brigid Lyons thornton, a doctor and distinguished member of Cumann na mBan – form a secure, natural courtyard with three playgrounds for different age groups. the regeneration of st Michael’s began 12 years ago with construction only starting in 2010 after a public-private partnership with developer Bernard Mcnamara failed.

Why Irish men just can’t be relied on IRISH men are more unreliable than women but they will definitely, definitely, take the bins out, a survey has revealed. Research found that despite it being the most coveted and prized aspect in any relationship – reliability is not strong for either men or women in Ireland when it comes to house chores. Some 50 per cent of men should not be depended on to do the ironing, while more than 27 per cent of men claim their mammies are more reliable than their partners. Mutually dabbling in the odd white lie, Irish men and women do lie about their job title, address and their age – with men being the bigger culprits in all respects, found the survey, commissioned by Sky Ireland. It’s not all rosy for women either, as some 48 per cent of them fib about their weight, while up to 34 per cent admit to lying to their partner. Technology gets the upper hand in many relationships, as up to 30 per cent said that their phone is their most dependable possession. Sky Ireland’s director of products, Ann-Marie MacKay, said: ‘Considering that smartphones and laptops are deemed to be the most reliable pieces of technology by 48 per cent of the respondents, it’s more important than ever that people have a broadband service that they can rely on.’

gun deaths rise as gangs use more lethal weapons by ORNA cuNNiNgHAM THE increased use of handguns in Ireland has brought on a frightening rise in deaths, an Irish Medical Journal report has shown. A 1985 study showed just 21 gun injuries, and four deaths as a result. But according to a 2008 study, the handgun’s growing popularity meant eight of 17 people who presented with gunshot wounds in that period, died. Only one person in 31 wounded died due to an injury from a low-velocity weapon. In a new study published in the Irish Medical Journal, of patients brought to west Dublin’s Connolly Hospital emergency department between 2001 and 2010, 65 had gunshot injuries. Eight patients died in the emergency room. The report showed that the youngest victim of gun crime was 15 and the oldest, 52. Only one woman presented with a gunshot wound. The type of weapon used in the attack was important too – patients were more likely to survive an assault with a low-velocity shotgun blast than a high-velocity handgun. The report’s authors describe the results as ‘showing a dramatic increase in gun crime in Dublin over the previous four decades’. The age profile of victims had decreased (the mean age of 27 had decreased from 31) and the mortality rate had increased, with a marked increase in the use of high-velocity firearms like handguns, rifles and semi-automatic weapons. Firearms of this nature have been widely attributed to increased gangland activity and the illegal drug trade. The authors also noted that gunshot wounds from licensed weapons are still relatively rare. They finished by saying that despite the evident increase in gunshot injuries, the numbers in Ireland are still low by comparison with other developed countries. The burden on radiology departments remains relatively low, they added. However, should the increasing trend continue, further resources and expertise may be required, they warned.

HSE worth more than ‘extra fiver’ – Minister MINISTER for Health Leo Varadkar has warned that tax cuts in Budget 2015 should not come at the expense of the health service. During an interview on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland radio show, the Minister said an increase in

Stigma over mind health SOME 65 per cent of people believe Irish society views being treated for a mental health problem as a sign of failure. Figures released by St Patrick’s Mental Health Services for today’s World Suicide Prevention Day reveal that stigma in Ireland is still a major cause for concern. The research showed that one in five respondents wouldn’t trust someone who previously had a mental health issue.

Versatile STELLAn SkARSgåRD, 63, has played pirates and astrophysicists. In his new film, In Order Of Disappearance, he plays a father hunting his son’s killers Where do you get recognised most? Probably Sweden but

where people come up to me most is in the US. Sometimes it’s because they’ve seen Good Will Hunting 15 times; some say: ‘I love Insomnia.’ Some kids come up because they’ve seen Avengers, and girls have seen me in Mamma Mia! There’s a fit for everyone.

In Order Of Disappearance is violent. Do you ever get squeamish filming grisly scenes? No. It’s not real. We

made a decision that the violence should be unpleasant because the director and I are against violence. And this violent revenge thing my character is doing is not morally right but understandable.

Why do you think Nils reacts that way? He is incapable of

dealing with his emotions and he doesn’t have the tools to deal with the situation. If he had let out his emotions, he wouldn’t have had to kill anybody. The killing spree comes out of incompetence.

In Order Of Disappearance is darkly funny too. What’s the appeal of gallows humour? You feel liberated by laughing at things you’re afraid of.

Have you ever felt that? I laughed when my father died. And cried. And laughed. Why? Because it was so absurd. We made some jokes, me and my siblings, right when he died, and laughed and then went back to crying then laughed again. Man is such a funny animal.

Do you have to be a pop psychologist to be an actor?

As an actor, if you try to go by some cheap Freudian psychology you’re f***ed, because people can react in the strangest ways. I just try to make it believable for the audience

Do other actors ever annoy you? No, I love working with

actors. The only thing that annoys me is if they put their own vanity in front of the work.

Do you see that more in Hollywood? Not necessarily,

and then it’s not always about vanity. A lot of movie stars depend on looking good for their income. I don’t have to do that because I’m more of an actor than a star. It’s much better to be an actor.

A lot of movie stars depend on looking good for their income. I don’t have to do that the uncut version that is hard to take for sure.

What do you like about Sweden? It’s so much nicer to

live in a society where we don’t have a lot of bulls*** about whether you have a penis or not.

What’s the best thing about your job? Being creative together

Are you social? Yes. I need

people, love people. I’ve got eight kids – you don’t do that if you don’t like people.

What’s the worst thing about your job? Learning lines.

What would you cook someone for the first time?

When I was a kid I couldn’t wait to grow up so I wouldn’t have any homework, and now I’m an actor, it’s so much homework.

What was it like filming Nymphomaniac? As always,

when I work with Lars [von Trier] it’s such a great pleasure. Then spending two weeks in a room with Charlotte Gainsbourg was… lovely.

Did anything shock you about the film? Not really but

there’s some pretty brutal stuff in

If they’re vegetarian, meat. I’ve converted three vegetarians by serving them milk-fed veal.

In the last Thor film you stripped off and ran naked around Stonehenge. Did filming that bother you? No, I like physical comedy. I’m considered a serious actor, which is a nightmare sometimes! I like being funny. Anna Smith

THE time for Apple’s entry into the world of wearable technology finally arrived yesterday – as the tech giant unveiled its Apple Watch. The device runs apps, acts as a health and fitness tracker and will be compatible with the iPhone – but it won’t go on sale until next year. ‘This is the most personal device we’ve ever created,’ said Apple chief executive Tim Cook in Cupertino, California, where he also launched the iPhone 6 and a new mobile payment system called Apple Pay. US president slaps down wife-beater football star

by SHAROn MARRiS

BARACK OBAMA has joined the chorus condemning US football star Ray Rice after a video emerged of him punching his fiancée unconscious. The US president made a statement hours after the player was dropped by the Baltimore Ravens amid a row over the clip, which showed him punching Janay Palmer, now his wife, in a lift. ‘Hitting a woman is not something a real man does and that’s true whether or not an act of violence happens in the public eye or, far too often, behind closed doors,’ the president said. ‘Stopping domestic violence is something that’s bigger than football.’ The footage, from February, shows the couple arguing in a lift at an Atlantic City casino. Crash flight MH17 ‘hit by objects in mid-air’ THE Malaysia Airlines plane that crashed in Ukraine broke up after being struck by ‘high-energy objects’, a report has found. Flight MH17 received ‘multiple holes and indentations’ from ‘objects that penetrated the aircraft from outside’, it states. Experts say the findings match earlier claims that a missile struck the Boeing 777 aircraft. Human or technical error was not to blame for the crash in July, in which all 298 people – mostly Dutch nationals – on board were killed. ‘The fact that many pieces of aircraft structure were distributed over a large area indicated the aircraft broke up in the air,’ the Dutch Safety Board said in its preliminary report.

My rat came a cropper, now it’s a chopper A TEENAGER left devastated by the death of his pet rat has had it turned into the world’s first airborne rodent. Pepeijn Bruins can now fly his animal by remote control thanks to three propellers attached to it. His pet Ratjetoe (Dutch for ratatouille) had to be put down after getting cancer. Pepeijn, 13, then asked Arjen Beltman and Bart Jansen – inventors of a flying cat – to help. They stuffed it and made it airborne. ‘I loved Ratjetoe very much – he loved to be cud-

We’ve all joined the Guinness club THE 60th edition of the Guinness World Records hits the shelves tomorrow with superlatives that will shock and amaze on every page. Chief among them is Nick Bennett who has earned a place in the compendium for having the largest 007 collection. The 47-yearold from Leigh in Lancashire owns 12,463 pieces of memorabilia in his house. Mr Bennett said: ‘It’s a dream come true. As a child I read the book from cover to cover and I cannot believe that I will actually be in this year’s book as an official record holder, pinch me.’

Californian Nick Stoeberl had to work less hard for his place in the compendium. He has the world’s longest tongue (4in). Beth Johnson from Ohio, has built the world’s largest yo-yo measuring 11ft 9in in diameter.

Meanwhile, Nancy Siefker, 26, holds the record for the furthest arrow shot with the feet. The circus artist from California is able to shoot an arrow 20ft. And don’t forget Karsten Maas, 49, from Denmark. He is the proud inventor of the world’s longest golf club, measuring 14ft 4in.

State-of-the-art DIT site is ‘inspiring’, says Burton by LukE HOLOHAn TÁNAISTE Joan Burton has described the development of the Grangegorman site for the Dublin Institute of Technology campus as ‘tremendous’ and ‘inspiring’. During a visit to the state-of-theart north Dublin campus, the minister spoke of her confidence in the continued success of the Dublin Institute of Technology and said that the project was one very close to her heart having grown up in the area. The Dublin Institute of Technology welcomed its first 1,000 students earlier this week and the Minister for Social Protection said that ‘meeting the first staff and students who will work on the campus gives a very real sense of the achievement that has

been made to date and the potential that will be realised in the future.’ Also speaking on the tour of the grounds was Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan. She said that the Government was

a very proud supporter of the institute’s vision for world class education and hailed the conservation work that went into maintaining the site’s unique and original features. Ms O’Sullivan said: ‘The initial

Minister tackles religious ‘discrimination’ MINISTER of State at the Department of Justice and Equality Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has said he is focused on changing legislation which can have ‘a chilling effect on members of the LGBT Community’. The legislation in question is section 37 of the Employment Equality Act. The Labour minister said: ‘In its current form, this section of this Act allows religious institutions to discriminate against employees who may contradict their ethos.’ He added that this is of ‘particular concern to those in the education and health sectors where many schools and hospitals are funded by the State, but run by a religious order’.

phase of development has focused on the remarkable conservation and development of the 19th century buildings that formed the old Grangegorman site. ‘They have been brought back to life as state-of-the-art design studios, lecture rooms, a library and student facilities. I look forward to continued progress on this unique educational facility that has achieved so much.’ Ten thousand students will make the move from DIT’s various campuses around the city to Grangegorman by 2017. On completion in 2020, the site is expected to accommodate up to 20,000 students. The reported total cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of €550million.

Youth jobless rate among highest in EU THE rate of unemployment among young people in Ireland who are not in education or training is far above the European average. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Education At A Glance report, jobless young people outside the Irish education system come to 21 per cent – eclipsing the EU and OECD average of 15 per cent. While Ireland ranks high for student graduate levels – some 93 per cent of young people are expected to get their secondary level qualifications, compared to the OECD average of 84 per cent – the rate of unemployment posteducation is still a major cause for concern. The report found that Ireland invests in education per student more than most OECD countries – spending up to 6.2 per cent of GDP.

Breeding of zebras in zoos is not all black and white

T

he photos of a common zebra foal born at Dublin Zoo yesterday highlight the fact that zoos serve no genuine conservation purpose. As implied by its name, the ‘common’ zebra is the most abundant of the three main species of zebra, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature describes its population as being of ‘least concern’ – unlike the other two main species, Grévy’s and mountain zebras, both of which are endangered. More than half a million common zebra currently live in more than a dozen African countries, but this particularly unlucky baby will never know anything beyond life in captivity. She will never see her natural habitat, and without a natural and adequate social structure, she will never have the opportunity to learn ‘common’ or basic zebra behaviour. Dublin Zoo’s purpose in breeding baby animals is to drive ticket sales, and it should not get away with trying to justify its

continuing incarceration of animals for (dwindling) public amusement, by pretending that it’s doing something useful when it is not. In Copenhagen Zoo, when Marius the giraffe grew up and was no longer a crowd pleaser, his fate was to be killed. People who don’t want to support the cruel treatment of animals should avoid zoos. Ben Williamson, PETA.org ■ Alberto, you are completely correct. Drug addicts are a dangerous embarrassment. Some say these people have a right to their dole, but note that the rest of us has the right to go about our lives unmolested, and without fear. The status quo of the dole and short prison sentences are cheap and easy to upkeep, compared to the political riskiness of admitting our society has a systemic problem, or attempting to prevent and cure the problem. There are no votes and there’s no money to be made from it. Bobannaliffia

The girl next door – as long as ‘next door’ is ontario, Canada, where she hails from – McAdams has ascended Hollywood’s A-list in a series of big-hitting romances. Think The Notebook, swooning over Ryan Gosling (whom she dated for two years). or The Vow, The TimeTraveler’s Wife, Midnight In Paris or last year’s Richard Curtis movie, About Time. Little wonder she got dubbed ‘the new Julia Roberts’. ‘I would say there’s a side of me that’s a romantic for sure,’ nods the 35-year-old McAdams, petite and pretty in a sparkling Valentino dress. ‘My parents are very much still in love and I grew up with that around me, so I’m a believer.’ While past relationships include actors Josh Lucas and Michael Sheen, she evidently loves a good fictional romance too. ‘I remember the first time I saw Giant or Gone With The Wind. How will you remember Philip Seymour Hoffman? I admired him

and he was great to work with. I think the most remarkable thing when you do get a chance to work with a great actor, is how easy they often are to work with. I felt comfortable with him. When

we were together I felt like I had known him for a long time. So needless to say, it’s very sad how his life ended.

You’ve been in the acting game for many years. Does it still surprise you? Sure, I mean sometimes I wonder if I’m simple minded! But that’s maybe why I’m an actor. But I love to be surprised.

Imagination that’s out of this world Cork-based author David Mitchell tells Claire Allfree about his latest mind-bending novel, ahead of his appearance at Dublin’s Mountains To Sea Festival this weekend

READING LIST MORE BY MITCHELL Number9Dream (2001)

T

he other day David Mitchell found himself blubbing uncontrollably in front of an in-flight showing of Steve Martin’s gooey family comedy Cheaper By the Dozen 2. ‘And I was horribly aware of the businessman next to me heaving with laughter. except when I eventually looked at him he was crying too. that’s the problem with having children. It makes you horribly sentimental.’ readers with a sentimental bent may shed a tear or two themselves at the final pages of Mitchell’s new novel, the Bone Clocks. to give away the ending would spoil the plot, although there are so many multi-dimensional narrative mashups going on that the word ‘plot’ feels a bit inadequate. Suffice to say the Bone Clocks ends in a post-apocalyptic Irish outpost where bandits terrorise the countryside for the last remaining energy sources. Mitchell lives in Ireland with his Japanese wife and is not afraid to admit he partly wrote it because he is terrified by what the world might look like when his two children, aged 11 and 9, are adults. ‘I’m a dad and it’s in your cells, isn’t it? It’s in everything I write. And I honestly think we’re funding our standards of living at the expense of our children and grandchildren’s ability to pay.’ the Bone Clocks defies easy categorisation, even by Mitchell’s holographic, genre-smashing standards. Way more entertaining than an environmental novel has any right to be, it follows six chapters in the life of holly Sykes – a teenage runaway from Kent when the novel begins in 1984 and a battle-scarred, grief-stricken

Mitchell’s second novel paid a big debt to cinema, computer games and online technology with its hyperlinked story of 19-year-old Eiji Miyake, in Tokyo searching for his father. Mitchell remains fascinated by the impact of modern technology on our minds. ‘The self division of our attention is more normal these days. The novel can help be a binding force to say why all these narratives are on the same screen. At the same time, those stories can be highly diverse and not much to do with each other.’

Fantastic four: Number9 Dream, Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks have all been nominated for the Booker Prize grandmother by the time it ends in 2043. teenage holly has ‘daymares’ – hallucinations that tip her into an alternative para-universe riven by an ancient conflict between two immortal forces. As the novel progresses, that raging parauniverse erupts into the real world in gloriously bizarre ways. there’s much more to say (characters include a gnomic soothsayer, esther Little; a boy with the soul of a pre-Christian Chinese

Cloud Atlas (2004) horologist; plus pop-ups by characters from previous Mitchell novels) but the easiest thing is probably to read it for yourself. Mitchell has the face of a bank clerk but the soul of a visionary and is deeply interested in big questions such as social responsibility and the science of perception. But he prefers to wrap them up in rambunctious epics that at times feel like spoof sci-fi. the Bone Clocks pushes at the limits of what a story can do yet at the same time insists that everything that happens is true. Meanwhile, in person Mitchell – a self-confessed nerd who grew up on a diet of Doctor Who and Blake’s 7 – moves seamlessly between Game of thrones fan talk and the influence of Jung on Virginia Woolf. ‘I like this tug-of-war between order and chaos,’ he says. ‘And I’m interested in what happens when you put things together that shouldn’t be put together, because often a third, very

Epic reach: Tom Hanks and Raeven Lee Hanan in Cloud Atlas

different thing emerges. It’s like when you put orange and green next to each other, your brain will see a black line between them even though it isn’t there.’ For the third time, Mitchell has attracted the attention of the Booker judges: the Bone Clocks made the longlist – though not the shortlist announced yesterday. But he admitted beforehand that if he wasn’t shortlisted part of him would be happy to return to the relative anonymity of his Irish home. he needs the peace and quiet, he says. ‘When I write a novel I spend more time in my head than out. the law of thermodynamics also applies to imaginative worlds. So I need to think about it a lot and look vacant at the dinner table and not always be there.’

The Bone Clocks (Sceptre) is available now. David Mitchell will appear at The Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire on Fri (8.30pm, €10) as part of this year’s Mountains To Sea festival. www.mountainstosea.ie

It was this novel – which wrapped six stories inside each other, from the Pacific journal of an 18th-century sailor to the story of a goat herder in 2346 – that really established Mitchell as some sort of wizard, capable of the most dazzling literary conjuring tricks. It was shortlisted for the Booker and made into a film by the Matrix directors Lana and Andy Wachowski, although it’s safe to say the result was not a success. Mitchell was sanguine at the time, saying: ‘If the film doesn’t work, it doesn’t hurt the book. If it does work, it helps the book.’

Black Swan Green (2006) This is Mitchell’s most autobiographical novel to date and a relatively straightforward one compared with everything else he’s written. It’s set in a small English village of Black Swan Green and follows 13 months in the life of Jason Taylor, a boy who, like Mitchell as a child, suffers from a debilitating stammer.

ROSS MCDONAGH ponders James Corden’s chances of success on the US chat show circuit

I

’m STARING at the words in disbelief – ‘James Corden to become the next host of the Late Late Show’. If any septuagenarians are reading this, don’t worry, Ryan Tubridy is not being replaced (ha, as if RTÉ would ever venture a toe outside its gene pool). No, it’s the host of the American version of the Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson, who is being replaced by the Gavin And Stacey star. American talk shows are not like Irish or UK talk shows, for good and bad reasons. For one thing, all US talk shows are pretty much the EXACT SAmE FORmAT. You have a host, who always has a ‘funny’ sidekick. David Letterman has creepy Paul Schaeffer; Conan

O’Brien has fat Andy Richter; Jimmy Kimmel has weird looking Sean Higgins; Seth meyers has ‘one-gag’ Fred Armisen; Jimmy Kimmel has mexican Guillermo; Chelsea Handler had dwarf Chuy. Even Craig Ferguson has a robot named Geoff. They come out at the start, make a few gags in a monologue, always about current affairs, so inevitably New kid: every show James Corden makes the exact same jokes. Two guests, a few pre-arranged questions, a question about the new movie/album/book/show they are promoting, and a musical guest plays a song at the end. Copy. Paste. Repeat. And since people only come on when they have something to

promote, the same celebs do a circuit of all the talk shows, saying the exact same things, recounting the exact same anecdotes. That’s not to say the shows are bad – I watch them all the time. They might not be as funny as the likes of Graham Norton but they are certainly better than some chat shows broadcast in Ireland. I’ll let you fill in the blanks yourself... Recently a bit of a shuffle has taken place. Jay Leno retired, so Jimmy Fallon moved from Late Night to replace him. I really like Jimmy Fallon, but try gleaning any information from his celeb interviews and you will come up short. All he does for ten minutes is yammer about what good mates they are and ‘that one time we were at a party together’, continuously interrupting his guests. Chelsea Handler, who stepped down from her show (or was pushed,

if you believe the late Joan Rivers), completely in character. Ferguson, did the same, boasting how she and perhaps a little bit hurt that he her guest used the same masseuse or wasn’t asked, is walking away from dog walker – except she mentioned late night chat... Which brings us her vagina a lot. back to James Corden. I was never a James Corden fan. I Letterman is retiring, and not didn’t get Gavin And Stacey, a decade too soon, and when Smithy continclearly as bored with ued to spill out after it I the job as his didn’t get that either. audience is, was definitely phoning it in Letterman is retiring, (Irooting for Patrick every night and not a decade too Stewart during with just THAT cringey award enough effort soon, clearly as bored show dust up). to remain with the job as the Question is: can standing during someone who is his monologue. audience is completely unknown But instead of here hold on to the Late being replaced by Late’s 1.5million viewers? Rattled Rosberg hurt by podium boo-boys

golf

by MATTHEW NASH

Nico RosbeRg has asked Formula one fans to ‘forgive and forget’ after being booed on the podium for the second successive race. Following his collision with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton on the second lap of the belgian grand Prix, which led to the briton later retiring, Rosberg was heckled as he collected his runner-up trophy. He suggested post-race it was ‘the british people’ who had turned against him, but he was jeered again by vociferous italian supporters at Monza on sunday. After another second-place finish, with a mistake on lap 29 allowing Hamilton to take the win, the crowd voiced their displeasure at Rosberg. being cast in the role of villain, when for so long he has been viewed as a good guy, is clearly a concern. Rosberg admitted: ‘it’s obviously not nice but what can i say? ‘i hope that with time they forgive and forget. That would be great. ‘i have apologised. i can’t really do anything more than that.’ even Hamilton, booed himself in italy in the past, has claimed he felt ‘awkward’ to hear the jeers. Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff joined the call for fans to lay off his driver, who he now feels is being affected by the situation. ‘First of all, there shouldn’t be any booing on the podium,’ said Wolff. ‘That’s for the top three guys who have had a mega-race and, whoever it is, there shouldn’t be booing. We’re a sport, sport should unite. ‘All those guys are fans, some of them are pretty emotional, and does it take a toll on you? Yeah, you have to be pretty tough. ‘Maybe it [being heckled] is something you need to survive if you want to make it to the top.’

CARTON TO pLAy HOST TO WORLD AMATEuR gOLf

Ireland will host the men’s and ladies World amateur Team Championships in 2018. Carton House in County Kildare has been selected as the venue for the espirito Santo (ladies) and eisenhower Trophy (men) in back-to-back weeks, the International Golf Federation confirmed at its biennial meeting in Japan where the 2014 editions of the tournaments are currently being held. The only previous time the eisenhower Trophy was hosted in Britain or Ireland was on its inauguration at St andrew’s in 1958. Both events are 72-hole stroke play team championships, with 72 nations participating in this year’s event in Karuizawa. ‘Being selected to host the most prestigious amateur golf event in the world is a great achievement for Ireland,’ said chief executive of the Irish ladies Golf Union Sinéad Heraty. ‘Ireland has a great history and tradition of hosting successful major golf events and the staging of the World amateur Team Championships in 2018 will continue that tradition and build awareness of the standard and passion of elite amateur golf.’ Pat Finn, general secretary of the Golfing Union of Ireland, added: ‘With 72 national teams from five different continents, the World amateur Team Championships will be the most extensive international golf event that has ever been hosted on the island of Ireland, and we are looking forward to the challenge it will present.’

Deignan’s lip service to cycling punches team Sky’s Philip Deignan claims the infamous fight between cyclists Ivan Rovny and Gianluca Brambilla was not the first time the action has turned ugly during this year’s Vuelta. Rovny and Brambilla were kicked out of the race on monday after coming to blows during stage 16 – where the duo were both part of the breakaway. However Deignan, riding in support of Chris Froome, says one of the race’s biggest names attacked him on Sunday. He said: ‘I had Chris behind me

Flare-up: Rodriguez and was moving up to get into the wheels of the tinkoff-Saxo train. as we hurtled along, Joaquin Rodriguez, who is fourth overall, took umbrage to my presence and nudged me out a little bit. So I held my ground and nudged him back. ‘Out of the blue, Rodriguez turned towards me and punched me full in the face, splitting my lip. ‘I had the restraint and presence of mind to realise hitting him in such treacherous conditions would only worsen the situation.’ Deignan added Rodriguez was brought to his team bus to apologise on monday.

Zardini takes a Tumble to Nic stage win by MATTHEW NASH Italy’s Edoardo Zardini emerged triumphant from the gruelling climb of the tumble to claim victory in stage three of the tour of Britain yesterday and the overall leader’s yellow jersey. Nicolas Roche (tinkoff-saxo) moved ahead of Zardini (Bardiani-CsF) as the pair battled at the front on the summit finish but the Irishman was overtaken by his rival, who broke clear to win by nine seconds. Roche eventually came in third, 11 seconds back, with Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) taking second. Defending champion sir Bradley Wiggins (sky) was fifth, 14 seconds back.

‘I live in Verona and today was like my training rides’ the Briton has now moved from ten to 24sec off the top in the general classification, which sees Zardini 13sec clear of second-placed Kwiatkowski. Roche, who has been linked with a move to team sky, is third overall. Zardini was an unexpected winner but claimed the spectacular Welsh route was not as unfamiliar as you would think. ‘I live in Verona and today was very like many of the training rides I do around my home so it suited me fine,’ he said. Wiggins’ team-mate Ben swift said: ‘We wanted to keep Bradley in contention and limit our losses. We all rode well together.’ Five days remain, with today’s 184.6km stage going from Worcester to Bristol.

United in believing the Van Gaal era starts here by DANIEL JONES OLD TRAFFORD should get its first real taste of Louis van Gaal’s vision for Manchester United’s future when Queens Park Rangers visit on Sunday. Manager Van Gaal may hand debuts to four new stars, while British record-signing Angel Di Maria will be making his first home appearance. England left-back Luke Shaw is understood to be fit, defender Marcos Rojo finally has the necessary paperwork to play. Versatile Daley Blind and striker Radamel Falcao, the deadline-day recruits, are also available. Midfielder Ander Herrera, yet another summer buy, could also be back after picking up an ankle injury on the opening day of the season. Striker Robin van Persie, who could line up in a mouth-watering attacking quartet with Di Maria, Falcao and Wayne Rooney,

‘The new manager has the world at his feet’

City Edin for titanic title fight this year EDIN DZEKO believes Manchester City face several threats as they look to retain their Premier League title. City head to Arsenal on Saturday having crashed 3-0 to the Gunners in the Community Shield, but Dzeko is confident City are capable of finishing top for the third time in four seasons. ‘It will be difficult but I’m an optimist,’ said the 28-year-old Bosnia captain. ‘As with every season, there are several teams that will battle for the title. This season, Chelsea might be the most serious challenger but we mustn’t ignore Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal or Manchester United, who certainly will be much stronger than last year. Everyone has got stronger and everyone wants to be first.’

is excited by the prospect of United’s new-look team. ‘I can’t wait to go and train and play with the world-class players we have signed,’ said Van Persie. ‘The feeling we are going to perform well has only got stronger after the buying of players. It’s brilliant to play with some of the best players in the world.’ Winger Ashley Young believes United’s fortunes are about to turn after taking just two points from their first three games and the humiliating 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat at MK Dons. ‘I would say to the fans there is nothing to worry about, we’re going to come good,’ said Young. Club legend Sir Bobby Charlton also thinks United are on the brink of a golden new era. ‘We’ve got nothing to worry about,’ he said. ‘He’s got the world at his feet, the new manager.’ One blow for United is Phil Jones is a doubt for the QPR game with the hamstring injury suffered on England duty.

QPR Risk being refused entry back into the Championship if they do not pay a huge expected fine for breaching financial fair play rules. Chairman Tony Fernandes has vowed to fight any fine – which could be up to €50million – having made estimated losses of around €75m last season when they were promoted back to the top flight. However, Football League chief executive shaun Harvey has told Rangers not to try to dodge any punishment, warning they could be left in limbo if they are relegated from the

Football League club again [sooner or later]. QPR will hope it does not happen for some considerable number of seasons but the chances are they will need to return to the Football League at some point.’ Last season’s Championship clubs have until December 1 to submit their accounts, with the Football League set to announce any action a month later. Fernandes said in May: ‘My view is it is very unfair for a club that has been relegated as the wage difference between the Premier League and Championship is impossible.’

Blackpool fume at ‘disappearing’ Riga BLACKPOOL chairman Karl Oyston has ignited his feud with manager Jose Riga by insisting he is ‘bemused’ by the Belgian’s actions. The Seasiders, who have lost all of their games in the Championship so far, failed to add to their wafer-thin squad before the transfer deadline. And now Oyston claims Riga (pictured) was nowhere to be found during the international break. ‘The first thing the manager does is hop on a plane and clear off to Belgium for a week without telling anyone,’ claimed Oyston. ‘It’s something I will be speaking to him about.’

Poll: Blatter may create new racket FORMER Premier League referee Graham Poll believes Fifa president Sepp Blatter’s plan to allow coaches to challenge decisions could be used tactically. ‘You see tennis players who are looking for an extra 30-second breather put in an objection knowing the ball has gone out,’ he said. But Poll does back the use of replays. ‘The game has speeded up and players are more crafty and deceitful than they’ve ever been, so referees do need help,’ he said.
