Tears streamed down the Paralympian’s face as Judge Thokozile Masipa found him not guilty of premeditated and second-degree murder – before adjourning proceedings just ten minutes into the afternoon session. The abrupt halt came before she reached a decision as to whether the 27-year-old was guilty of culpable homicide, South Africa’s equivalent of manslaughter. It carries a five-year term if a gun is used but Pistorius also faces up to 15 years on just one of

by NICOLE LE MARIE three gun-related charges. Judge Masipa called the athlete a ‘very poor witness’ who ‘lost his composure’ during cross-examination. But that did not mean he was guilty of murder, she said, telling Pretoria’s High Court: ‘There are just not enough facts to support such a finding.’ However, he had been ‘negligent’ when he reached for his 9mm pistol rather than raise the alarm, she added. ‘All the accused had to do was pick up his cell phone and ring security.’

Northern lights to put in surprise appearance THE NORTH could be in store for a beautiful display of the Northern Lights. The bright dancing lights, known as the aurora borealis, could be on display tonight. This is because there have been two large explosions on the Sun and huge amounts of magnetically charged particles have been hurled into space towards Earth. Known as coronal mass ejection (CME), they can produce different colours, with green, pink, red and yellow all possible. The first CME should arrive tonight and the second on Saturday.

A RISe in the number of tourists has generated an extra €123million for the Irish economy, according to new figures. Overseas visitors spent about €1.5billion this year between June and January, representing a rise of almost nine per cent on the same period last year, the Central Office of Statistics (CSO) found. The CSO also revealed the number of holidays to Ireland increased by 7.8 per cent over the first six months of this year, with a 13 per cent jump in tourists from Great Britain and a nine per cent rise in travellers from America. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe said high-profile promotion campaigns and major events like the Giro d’Italia had paid off. ‘It must be remembered that 2013 was the year of the Gathering and overall expenditure from overseas visitors (excluding fares) grew by 11.9 per cent to €3.26billion for the year. ‘Despite fears in some quarters that it would be difficult to achieve similar results in 2014, today’s data shows that the positive momentum has been maintained, which is tremendous news for everybody in our tourism sector.’ The CSO figures were based on surveys of overseas visitors and detailed information on expenditure, purpose of visit and bed nights. Niall Gibbons, CeO of Tourism Ireland, described the results as ‘good news’. He said: ‘Given that overseas tourism business accounts for almost 60 per cent of all tourism revenue, this is good news indeed, with the increase in overseas holidaymakers and revenue helping to boost employment around the country.’

TWO men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Christopher ‘Git’ Zambra. The 38-year-old – who was a suspected major drug dealer in the capital – was killed when he was ambushed while visiting a relative on the Cooley Road, Drimnagh, on May 4 this year. A number of bullets were reportedly fired while Zambra sat in his car. He collapsed outside a house as he tried to flee and was pronounced dead at the scene. A Nissan Qashqai used in the shooting was later found burnt

out on the Bedmadigan Road, along with a handgun. It is believed Zambra was involved in a feud with a number of Dublin criminal gangs. In 2008 an attempt on his life was made when shots were fired at him in Crumlin by men linked to a rival illegal organisation. Investigating gardaí say they arrested two men – one in his 40s and a 27-year-old, this morning. They are being detained at Sundrive Road and Kevin Street Garda Stations and can be held for up to seven days.

THE issue of homelessness and addiction continues to be a growing problem in Ireland, according to a leading rehabilitation centre. Merchants Quay Ireland yesterday launched its annual review, highlighting the ‘continued growth of homelessness and drug use and the increasing hardship and vulnerability experienced by many men and women’. The review shows that the organisation supplied 85,000 free meals in 2013, an increase

of more than 11 per cent, and recorded a total of 4,500 healthcare interventions. Meanwhile, more than 25,000 client visits were made to their needle exchange service in Dublin – a one quarter rise on 2013 levels. Increases in rehabilitation services are not unique to the capital, however. Out of the admissions to the St Francis Farm detox centre, 58 per cent of patients came from outside of Dublin.

Incincerator ‘never going to happen’ THE Green Party leader has said if Minister Alan Kelly delivers on his promises, there will be no need for the planned Poolbeg incinerator. Yesterday the Minister told a conference the waste industry is ‘unprofessional’ and ‘in a race to the bottom’. He also said the sector would have to take on board regulatory reform or face new legislation next year. Referring to his comments about a pay-by-weight system for waste disposal, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said the incinerator ‘is never going to happen’. ‘He promised a pay-byweight system… that means no demand for the incinerator.’

Nine staff disciplined in wake of Savita tragedy

Fancy dance too ‘risqué’ for TV show THE Broadcasting Authority of Ireland rejected six public complaints in July, but upheld one in part – a risqué dance routine on the Voice of Ireland. The complainant had argued the dancing that accompanied singer Danica Holland’s performance on March 23 was ‘unsuitable’ for younger viewers and was ‘appalled’ while watching it with her children. While two complaints were made about the portrayal of transgender people in RTÉ2’s The Centre, another complainant was outraged by George Hook’s ‘tongue in cheek’ view of cyclists and accused the broadcaster of ‘inciting hatred’.

NINE staff at the hospital where an Indian dentist died after suffering a miscarriage have been disciplined, it has been confirmed. Although an independent review panel found most of those who treated Savita Halappanavar at University Hospital in Galway had ‘no case to answer’, written warnings and other sanctions were imposed against a number of workers. The West/North West Hospitals Group said: ‘The disciplinary process in respect of most of the other nine staff is now complete. ‘In some cases, pre-procedural informal counselling with training and mentoring was applied, in others written warnings were issued. ‘The process is still under way for a small number of staff.’ Mrs Halappanavar, 31, was 17 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to hospital in October 2012. Her death, five days after she was refused a termination, sparked widespread public debate which eventually forced a controversial change in abortion legislation. A number of different reports into the care Mrs Halappanavar received, particularly as her condition worsened, identified multiple shortcomings. The hospital said 21 staff members were informed ‘some months ago’ that they would not face disciplinary action and were not brought into the formal process.

by LESLIE-ANNE McKEOWN But, it claimed to have drafted in an external oversight panel in a bid to restore public confidence in the maternity services. Under the HSE’s disciplinary rules, written warnings, which form the second stage of disciplinary procedures, are issued for a period of nine months ‘if the employee fails to make the necessary improvements, or if the nature of the unsatisfactory performance/conduct is more serious’. Pre-procedure counselling is a less formal method of addressing issues without invoking the disciplinary procedure. According to the HSE guidelines, the purpose of counselling is to ensure that employees understand what is expected from them and to provide an opportunity to discuss any aspects of the job which may be causing difficulties in achieving the required standards. A Group spokesman said: ‘The purpose of this disciplinary procedure is to ensure that all employees adhere to the required standards by making them aware of any shortcomings and identifying how the necessary improvements can be achieved. The key objective is to assist the employee to maintain the required standards, rather than impose penalties.’ The Irish Medical Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland are also considering some cases.

Baz ashmawy is back on TV putting his mum Nancy through the mill in Sky1’s 50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy. He’s also the face of Ireland’s Takeaway Awards, The Eaties my mom so I can’t even look at Asian food at the minute.

The Eaties sound like an appetising set of awards to be involved in. Tell us more…

Having fronted Baz’s Culture Clash, Extreme Worlds and How Low Can You Go? you have racked up your fair share of miles. What’s the strangest situation you’ve found yourself in abroad?

So it’s the first online takeaway awards organised by JustEat.ie. Basically it’s the Oscars for nuggets and Pad Thai chicken. Myself and Vogue Williams will be presenting it on October 22. What we want people to do is vote for their local takeaway and they could win free takeaway for a year.

I was filming at a prison in Oklahoma for a rodeo once and I had to interview a prisoner who had just been hit by a 250lb bull. He had a slight concussion and I was the one to break it to him that he was doing 25 years in state prison.

With six children in your household to feed, are you the cook or the one who insists on ordering in? I’m the

one who orders in. You see I’m useless in the kitchen and my missus is a great chef. I could actually do with free takeaway for a year – we have to re-mortgage the gaff each time we order.

50 Ways To Kill Your Mammy is now on our screens, a series of near-death adventures with your mother. What possessed the two of you to take this idea on?

And what type of takeaway takes your fancy? I’m pretty old

I wanted to make something that was funny, inspiring and that had a mother and son dynamic. I think comedy is a great tool for making

school, so I like battered sausages, chips and pizza. I also like Pad Thai and Chinese, but I just came back from a trip to Cambodia with

people receptive to the more poignant side of that relationship. Mum initially wanted to do a sky dive and I sort of dismissed her thinking that she was too old. That led her to flying the flag for older people on TV and is why she is the star of the show. She’s an amazing person and she did nearly everything – like white water rafting and muay Thai.

up – did she surprise you or has she always been a tough cookie? Ah she’s a tough woman.

She hit me with the Yellow Pages when I was about 14. But she’s an Irish mammy, sweet and kind. I knew people would love her I could actually do because she is with free takeaway for funny and that

a year – we have to re-mortgage the gaff each time we order

really translates on camera.

She tased you out in the desert… is that payback for causing hassle as a kid?

Probably. I was calling her bluff with the taser but she got me good. She shot me once in the spine and in the backside. Fair dues to her.

You’ve had a bit of a reputation for being a ‘tearaway’. Is that still the case? I wish I

could still be a tearaway. No, that’s a different stage of my life. Now I’m quite boring, which is why I like to try some crazy stuff.

So what takeaway food do you think the Irish will plump for at the awards?

I think it is going to be Chinese. Luke holohan

Drugs? I’m more into dogs, reveals clean-living Tom

C

LEANED-UP Tom Hardy is more into dogs than drugs since giving up his wild partying days. The 36-year-old hit hard times when he first broke Hollywood with a Star Trek film in 2002 and went on a well-documented period of alcohol and substance abuse. But he has turned things around and now spends his nights looking after his beloved dogs or watching his friends get drunk. ‘I don’t drink. Just the e-cigarette. It’s hardly f***ing rock ‘n’ roll. I sit out till four in the morning watching

everybody else get drunk,’ he said. Clean since 2003, Hardy is now addicted to taking in dogs. ‘Wherever I go, I get a dog, pretty much. I’m the finder of dogs, you know what I mean?’ he told Vulture, adding that his fiancée Charlotte Riley is beginning to complain. ‘She’s like, “You’re not allowed to bring another dog back from a job”. But I’ll always find one. ‘On every job we go on, I’ll either find someone’s dog and look after it, or I’ll take my own dog, or I find a dog and we home it,’ he said.

Speaking at the conference, Finance Minister Michael Noonan said that the Government was ‘firmly committed’ to the recovery of the construction and property sectors, and highlighted that Nama was supporting up to 25,000 construction workers across the country. He said that this number was expected to grow as developments improved nationwide.

Player power league Pelé hails first pitch running on teamwork by DAniEL binns IT WAS enough to reduce Brazil’s favourite footballing son to tears – a pitch in a Rio slum where floodlights are powered by the players. And as Pelé joined the countdown in Morro da Mineira, there was a buzz not only from the 200 tiles capturing the energy of a youth team, but also from those witnessing a world first. British start-up company Pavegen built the tiles that use a system of cogs which, when stepped on, act like generators to feed electricity to the lights. Solar panels can boost the effect in case the players weary. An emotional Pelé said: ‘My father named me Edson after Thomas Edison. This shows the extraordinary things possible when science and sport come together.’

Ben’s Batmobile

Affleck’s fearsome car for new superhero mash-up is revealed by SHAROn MARRiS IT’S not even out until 2016 – but excitement at the prospect of Batman and Superman squaring up on the big screen has already hit top gear. Fans were left salivating as director Zack Snyder tweeted a snap of the seriously sinister set of wheels the caped crusader will be driving. He had already given a glimpse of the car when he released a picture of a bat-suited and booted leading man, Ben Affleck, in May. With a cockpit-like wind screen and guns on the bonnet, the Batmobile could almost pass for a fighter craft from Star Wars. ‘It looks like it should be advancing on peaceful protesters,’ suggested one observer on Twitter. Snyder, who also has Henry Cavill and Amy Adams in his cast for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, tweeted the photo a day after a grainy unauthorised image of the car appeared online.

13 years after 9/11, we are standing tall Barack OBama yesterday honoured the victims of the 9/11 attacks – 13 years after four hijacked planes plunged the United States into a lengthy war against terrorism. Speaking at the Pentagon, where 184 people were killed on that fateful day, the president said: ‘Thirteen years after small, hateful minds conspired to break us, america stands tall and america stands proud.’ mr Obama paid tribute to the 3,000 people killed in al-Qaeda’s attacks just hours after he announced that US forces would expand military operations against Islamic State extremists, who have beheaded two US journalists in Syria in the last month. ‘as americans, we do not give into fear – ever,’ he said at the 9/11 memorial in Washington Dc. Volunteers overwhelmed at frontline of ebola horror AS the international community continues to try to prevent the spread of the ebola virus in west Africa, medical staff on the ground are overwhelmed. According to the World health Organisation more than 2,288 people have died from the deadly disease, while thousands have been diagnosed with it since the outbreak began earlier this year. Direct contact with infected blood and bodily fluids spreads the virus and symptoms include fever, vomitting, sore throat, diarrhoea, internal and external bleeding and decreased functioning of organs. One volunteer, working at the frontline of services in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, said he became emotionally overwhelmed after his arrival to the ebola stricken region. In an account after he arrived home, he said: ‘Families just pulled up in cars, let the sick person out and then drove off, abandoning them. ‘One mother tried to leave her baby on a chair, hoping that if she did, we would have no choice but to care for the child,’ said Pierre trbovic, a volunteer with Médecins Sans Frontières. A Belgian anthropologist, Mr trbovic

by AiLEEn DOnEgAn travelled to the city to help manage the treatment centre there, which was overflowing with ebola victims. his job: to turn people away – one of the hardest posts at centre, but something that had to be done to prevent the spread of the outbreak. Facilities are in short supply. ‘After a week, people told me I needed to stop. they could see the emotional toll that it was taking on me,’ he said. Mr trbovic detailed the routine procedure taken in the high-risk zones of the centre; one safety precaution overlooked and it could mean another life on the line. ‘It can take 15 minutes to dress in the personal protective equipment and, once inside, you can only stay an hour before you are exhausted and covered in sweat. ‘You can’t overstay or it gets dangerous. the patients are really unwell and it’s a lot of work to keep the tents clean of human excrement, blood and vomit, and to remove the dead bodies,’ he added. elsewhere, Australia breathed a sigh of relief yesterday when a miner, suspected of having the virus at a beachside tourist area, turned out to be a false alarm.

Tributes to Bond villain we loved

Fearsome: Richard Kiel, who died yesterday, as James Bond baddie Jaws

Friends, not foes: Richard Kiel with James Bond star Sir Roger Moore in 2007, and left, the pair starring in Moonraker in 1979

by niCOLE LE MARiE HE played the most feared Bond villain of them all – a towering henchman who killed his foes with a bite of his steel teeth. But actor Richard Kiel, who died yesterday aged 74, played the part of ‘over-the-top, monster’ assassin Jaws with such warmth that he won fans all over the world. Film bosses intended to kill the character at the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, but he was so popular that Kiel was brought back to reprise the role in Moonraker. Speaking on BBC Radio 4 show The Reunion just last week, Kiel said: ‘The original script had me

being killed by a shark… but they also filmed an ending where I survive and pop out of the ocean.’ When audiences saw that ending at a test screening, there were ‘hoots, howling and applause’, he said. ‘That was a big moment for me. I couldn’t believe it.’ As news of the 7ft 2in star’s death in hospital in Fresno, California, fil-

tered through, tributes poured in for the actor, who also appeared in TV shows The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Longest Yard, and Adam Sandler movie Happy Gilmore. Sir Roger Moore, 84, said of his former James Bond co-star’s death: ‘I am totally distraught. We were on a radio programme together just a week ago. I can’t take it in.’ Sandro

Monetti, director at Bafta in Los Angeles and a former showbiz reporter, described Kiel as having ‘teeth of steel, but a heart of gold’. Luis Fairman, the British dentist who made the famous teeth worn by Kiel in the Bond films, said: ‘He was a super guy, very friendly… a largerthan-life character who would always make time to talk with his fans.’

Life is just too short, moaners, so get grateful and happy!

I

’m sick of hearing all the moaners on this… banks this, corporations that, taxed for breathing… The current Government is trying to fix issues the last one made and ignored. Everyone’s too quick to forget. But seriously can you not find something to be happy about? Guaranteed clean water on tap for your kids? Big corporation jobs for your kids in years to come? Yes, the system has flaws, but why all of a sudden the complaints? Surely there should have been a solid structure in place beforehand. Am I wrong? What annoys me the most is that I’m 22 and couldn’t finish college, so I got out and got myself a job straight away. I’m working my ass off to get taxed, but even I can see it’s not the current Government’s fault. more importantly, we can’t keep focusing on the doom and gloom! Life is too short. Glass half full, Wicklow ■ New album is return to form from the biggest rock band on the planet and people moan about getting it free. Unbelievable. @daviddougan81 ■ Just read in @metroHNews that Nicole Scherzinger hints at love life woes on her new album. Hope she’s OK. @Gerlad007

■ my mum received a phone call to the landline phone in her house yesterday from someone calling themselves a ‘microsoft Technician’ about a problem with her computer. She was told to look in a certain file as the computer had been sending out spam email, and that she was responsible for this. She was instructed to visit a website (teamviewer.com), but thankfully she got too flustered to login properly. She told them she would ring them back when she was able to login and thankfully checked with me about getting help to log in. This seems to be a well documented scam – ‘microsoft Technician’ ringing about a non-existent problem. The end result for those conned is losing control of your computer, identity theft and/or credit card fraud, based on the payment made for the so-called repair service. my mother was very upset and shaken up by this experience, so it might be worth us all getting the word out that this is going on. Be warned and be wary of these kinds of scams folks. Pass the word on to those less experienced computer users. Barry

(Ben schnetzer) comes up with an idea: why not support the striking miners, another group falling foul of Thatcher’s government? his comrades are unsure but a small band decides to approach a random mining town to offer fundraising support from lGsM: lesbians and Gays support the Miners. It’s the perfect recipe for a rousing culture-clash comedy: two disparate groups, worlds

apart, united in a common cause but with plenty of prejudice to break down first. There are lovable actors on both sides: the Welsh include Bill Nighy, Imelda staunton and Paddy Considine while the lGsM group features Dominic West, Joseph Gilgun (Misfits), Faye Marsay (Fresh Meat) and Andrew scott (sherlock). There’s a terrific scene when the latter gang shuffles into a drab village hall, sporting pastels and piercings, comforted by an equally nervous group of Welsh villagers. It’s a tense moment that – like all in Pride – is

quickly dissolved by a sharp one-liner or three. Pride is sentimental but it works. It’s the kind of film that only comes along every few years. Billy elliot, The Full Monty, Brassed Off… all those had it, and Pride has it too. It has a serious side, of course: Aids is looming, homophobia continues and mining families struggle to survive. But Pride is as much about the party as the politics: it’s about hope, progress, relationships and people’s power to surprise and surpass expectations. Definitely bring that hanky. Anna Smith

Subtle take on the war on terror A Most WAnted MAn (15) HHH✩✩ Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a German anti-terrorist agent in this adaptation of John le Carré’s novel. Gunter is world-weary but dedicated, obsessively following local leads while trying to keep an interfering American agent (Robin Wright) at arm’s length. His latest case is illegal immigrant Issa (Grigoriy Dobrygin), Nuanced: Philip who may or may not have terrorist Seymour Hoffman intentions. Post-9/11, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so a complex plot is put in motion regarding both Issa and another suspect. It’s an interesting insight into Intelligence and international politics that feels more credible than sensational – this is a thoughtful thriller, not a nail-biting one. Director Anton Corbijn (Control) has assembled a talented cast: Hoffman is spot on, while Rachel McAdams is sympathetic as a human rights lawyer trying to help Issa. Meanwhile, Willem Dafoe puts in a measured, suitably ambiguous turn as a banker who manages to get in the middle of it all. There are no good guys or bad guys, it’s a rumination on human nature, the fluidity of allegiances and the almost impossible decisions required by those on every side. AS

In order of dIsAppeArAnce (15) HHH✩✩ Refusing to believe his son was a drug addict, Nils uncovers a murky plot and tracks down the men responsible for his death, stopping at nothing in his bid for vengeful bloodshed. Eva O’Connor: Bringing My Name Is Saoirse to The New Theatre

Not just any girll

Hello Metro Herald readers! I’m deep in preparation to bring My Name Is Saoirse to Tiger Dublin Fringe in just a few days’ time with my company Sunday’s Child. The show has just finished a hugely successful run at the edinburgh Fringe Festival – picking up five-star reviews and even an award for writing. I’m really excited to finally share the piece with an Irish audience because at the heart of this show is an Irish story. The show follows a young girl growing up in rural Ireland from adolescence through to travel-

ling to london to seek an abortion. I hope it gives some kind of a voice oice to the thousands of Irish women who have travelled abroad over the years for an abortion. The show w is not a polemic, it is simply the story of an ordinary, extraordinary girl growing wing up in Ireland in the 1980s. I hope the play will get people talking and thinking about the parallels between Ireland then and now. A lot has changed. But not enough.

My Name Is Saoirse runs at The New Theatre from Sep 15 to o 20 as part of Tiger Dublin Fringe 2014. www.fringefest.com

Telling the untold tales of our bodies

ÁINe and I made lurky! lurky! to amplify the untold stories of our bodies. It’s a celebration of our diverse and epic flesh and a refusal to bow to the cultural dictates that would portray us as small and harmless and hairless and smiling. our bodies are presented on stage and on an enormous scale projected onto a screen – they are moving, breathing landscapes. Footage of our bodies is edited live by Ian Cudmore. We wrote a blue-print for him to follow but each performance is very different as he brings his own judgement and eye to our work while responding to our live

performance in the space. We also see lurky! lurky! as a horror show and a wake for ourselves, where we die a little more each day. We have one of Ireland’s top scratch DJs, DJackulate, on stage with us too, mixing live sound and music for each show. The playlist includes Frances Black, Neil Young, a song we wrote ourselves about sex offenders, poetry and a letter to a much loved but sadly deceased guinea pig by the name of lady Peanut.

Lurky! Lurky! runs at the Samuel Beckett Theatre until Sep 14 as part of Tiger Dublin Fringe. www.fringefest.com

French software firm to create 90 jobs in Dublin

A FReNCh software company is to create 90 jobs in Dublin. Sidetrade is to take on staff in the fields of accountancy and finance as well as marketing and customer support roles in a number of languages over the next two years. The company’s new Dublin office was opened yesterday. Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said: ‘A key part of our plan to attract multinational investment is to pursue opportunities outside of our strongest market in the US. ‘We have put extra IDA staff in growth markets and increased the number of trade missions to allow us to include new destinations. ‘Today’s announcement that Sidetrade, a leading French software company, is opening a new

by cOn DOHERTy office in Dublin with the creation of 90 jobs is a great boost for this strategy.’ Sidetrade said the new Irish operation would be a platform to bolster its capacity to service customers in europe and worldwide. Welcoming the announcement, the chief executive of the Industrial Development Agency Ireland (IDA) Martin Shanahan said: ‘As part of our worldwide efforts to attract businesses to Ireland, IDA Ireland targets european companies through our offices in London, Paris and Frankfurt.’ Founded in 2000, Sidetrade offers companies the opportunity to digitise the management of their

financial relationships with customers through cash and credit management services, and debt collection software. With sales in 65 countries and 69,500 users, the company generated sales of €13.6million in 2013. Mr Shanahan added: ‘As a French company based in Paris and Listed on NYSe, Sidetrade is a particularly welcome addition to the increasing number of fast growth companies basing their business services operations in Ireland. IDA Ireland looks forward to more investment from the european market.’ Sidetrade boss Olivier Novasque said the firm’s aim is ‘to get closer to our clients in terms of culture and time zones’.

UNLUCKY for some, but Ireland has just been ranked in 13th place for reputation out of 55 countries. In a survey of the general public across all G8 nations, the Swiss came at the top of the Country Reptrak prestige pile. But while Ireland may have dropped down a place from 12th in the reputation table, its annual score has actually improved, increasing from 67.6 in 2013 to 68.5 out of 100 this year. Ireland was even ranked ahead of the UK, France, Spain and the US. Out of the core attributes used for measuring a good rep, Ireland did particularly well in the friendliness stakes, ranking ninth. Meanwhile, our fair isle was perceived to be the eighth most beautiful on the list. Niamh Boyle, managing director at the Reputations Agency, said: ‘Country reputation is vital for building strong

international relations, attracting tourism, foreign direct investment and providing much-needed support to domestic companies.’ She added: ‘This year, Ireland has again shown some small improvements across a number of key attributes including: “Is it run by an effective government”, “Is it a responsible participant in the global community”, “Is it a safe place” and “Does it offer a favourable environment for doing business”.’ While Switzerland may have gained top marks, the countries which could do with a bit of a boost are Nigeria, Pakistan and Iran. According to the data, and perhaps unsurprisingly, there is also a close correlation between a country’s reputation and the perceived levels of happiness, safety and transparency.

‘State must act to slash costs for businesses’

Some of the world’s most innovative companies and institutes will meet with Ireland’s finest talent, in a bid to fill thousands of high-tech jobs. Added to the bill for this Saturday’s event is a Speaker Series talk with Liam Casey, chief executive of PCH, on jobs of the future, as well as a session on ‘How to add 20k to your pay cheque’ with executive coach, Gráinne Carroll. THE State can take steps to cut rising costs for business and ensure the survival of Irish firms, the president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland has said. Cormac Fitzgerald said rising costs are ‘threatening competitiveness and the viability of businesses’. Speaking at the CPA Annual President’s Dinner in Trinity College yesterday evening, which was attended by the Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton, Mr Fitzgerald said: ‘Many business costs, such as energy and commercial rates, are within the scope of the State to make a difference, and improvements to the public finances offer some room for the Government to take action in this regard.’ And he attacked income tax too, saying: ‘The high marginal rates of tax on work are another issue which will result in further cost pressures if not addressed.’

Here’S the thing, what if I told you that because our Government is trying to address the fact that almost 70 per cent of all online purchases made in Ireland go to overseas markets (www.localenterprise.ie) they are now offering a voucher scheme which launched this summer nationally which is worth up to €2,500 once the recipient matches it. To qualify you need to have no more than 10 staff and a turnover of less than €2million and be established 12 months or more. Being privileged enough to coach business owners of SMes on addressing how they can improve their business performance, it still continues to amaze me how few are actually responding to the digital reality of needing a robust online presence to drive sales along with traditional methods of doing this. even the good ones are letting themselves down here. his slim hopes of claiming the Vuelta a Espana title despite missing out on victory on stage 18 atop Monte Castrove yesterday. The conclusion of the 157km route from A Estrada featured two ascents of Monte Castrove and one of the final opportunities to accrue time. Italian Fabio Aru (Astana) beat Froome (right) to the line, but the Team Sky leader stole crucial seconds from Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) to move second behind overall leader Alberto Contador. Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) now leads Froome by one minute 19 seconds after the Spaniard finished fifth.

DubLin MusT LEARn fROM DOnEgAL DEbAcLE – MAgEE Former midfielder Darren magee says Dublin must learn from their disaster against Donegal or risk losing in similar fashion again next year. Jim Gavin’s players were surprisingly overcome by a determined Donegal side in the recent All-Ireland semi-finals, relinquishing their title and ending their campaign in tame fashion. Since then, manager Jim Gavin has been criticised for naive defending and committing too many men to attack. ‘Donegal just knew what they were doing and they had a belief, they stuck to their game plan,’ said magee. ‘Dublin will have to learn from it. If they don’t learn from it, they will be caught again and other teams will start to play like that against Dublin. They have to be a little bit more flexible in future.’ magee, 32, bemoaned the lack of tight, tense battles up to then for Dublin. They’d beaten all their Championship opponents by double digit margins before coming up against Donegal’s well-oiled machine. ‘Being tested a little bit more in

defence would have been better for them, they’d have been a little bit more prepared,’ he said. ‘But the word coming from the camp was that the As and Bs matches were going well and all the emphasis was being placed on that. ‘It’s just unfortunate that the lads came up against a different animal completely. And having the preparation of tighter games would have definitely stood to them. Definitely for the younger lads, having harder opposition would have stood to them.’ magee rejected the suggestion that All-Ireland medal-winning players ultimately panicked against Donegal. ‘I wouldn’t say panicked,’ he said. ‘They just didn’t seem to have an answer. They were running into cul de sacs. It wasn’t what we were expecting from some lads. ‘Donegal were just sewing up our lads. They just took them in. Like, for Dublin, carrying the ball from deep, taking it into contact, that didn’t work. ‘It’s a collective thing, it wasn’t one individual. There was no regrouping at any stage.’

McHugh agonised over decision to quit Donegal by pAuL kEAnE

Mark McHugH has revealed how he agonised over his decision to quit Donegal and weighed up the prospect of walking away from an all-Ireland medal. The 2012 medallist and all-Star shocked Donegal by departing the panel just days after coming on as a substitute in the Division 2 league decider. He spent the summer in america but is back in Donegal now, prompting suggestions he could rejoin the panel ahead of the final.

‘I knew I just needed a break from it all’ But the older brother of semi-final star ryan said that simply wouldn’t be right after walking away mid-season. He says no-nonsense manager Jim Mcguinness wouldn’t have allowed it anyhow though maintained there is no tension between the pair. rather, the kilcar man, 24,

maintained that his decision to quit was down to not enjoying football any more. The talented half-forward insisted it wasn’t a snap decision and that he considered exactly what he may miss out on but has no regrets.

‘When I made this decision I said to myself, “make sure there’s no regrets” and I thought about it for long enough,’ said McHugh. ‘I said to myself, “what happens if Donegal get to an all-Ireland final or win an all-Ireland?”. But where I was at the time, I knew I

just needed a break as I wasn’t going to enjoy anything for the next number of months. ‘Maybe in that sort of mood, I’d have affected the morale of the whole team so I needed to get out of there for myself and for the rest of the team.’

Rory defends comments on Mickelson and Woods by pHiL cASEY

World number one rory McIlroy has defended his comments about Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson being in ‘the last few holes of their careers’. McIlroy first addressed the issue during his pre-tournament press conference at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, which will not feature either Woods or Mickelson for the first time since 1992. The 25-year-old was asked if that represented a changing of the guard in golf and said: ‘Not really. I mean, Phil has played well in parts this year. He came really close to winning the PGA (finishing second behind McIlroy). I feel like he’s gotten a little better as the year has went on. ‘But it’s a lot of golf for him to play in such a short space of time. So you could see he was getting a little tired the last couple of weeks. And, I mean, Tiger’s not here just because he’s been injured or he is injured. He hasn’t had the opportunity to play. ‘So they’re getting into the sort of last few holes of their career. And that’s what happens. You get injured. So it obviously just gets harder as you get older. I’ll be able to tell you in 20 years how it feels.’ He later wrote on his Twitter account: ‘Got a question today about Tiger and Phil... Gave an honest answer, was very complimentary about the two best golfers of this generation. ‘Golfers on average have a 20-25 year career, both into the back nine of their careers... don’t think there’s anything wrong with saying that.’

rory MciLroy has won the race to Dubai European tour Golfer of the Month award for the third time this year following his triumph at the US PGa Championship. the 25-year-old clinched the fourth major championship of his career at Valhalla, where he won by one shot from Phil Mickelson. it followed his open Championship victory in July, and his bMW PGa Championship win in May, both of which were followed by Mcilroy being handed the monthly European tour award recognition. World number one Mcilroy earns an alms dish and jeroboam of champagne for winning his third such award in the last four months, a run which has been achieved just twice before, by Henrik Stenson last year and by ian Woosnam in 1987. Mcilroy said: ‘it’s always an honour to win the Golfer of the Month award. the award is important to me, and to have won it three times this year shows i’m having a really special season. but hopefully i’m not done yet – there’s still plenty of golf to be played, so it’d be great to add a fourth before the season is over.’

Gaal-axy of stars doesn’t worry Louis LOUIS VAN GAAL insists he won’t find it difficult to accommodate his galaxy of stars in Manchester United’s new dream team. Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo could all make their Old Trafford debuts against QPR in Sunday’s Premier League battle. But questions have been raised as to how the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera will also feature in a top-quality starting XI. ‘We bought five players and one is on loan here who we can maybe buy next season, and we let 14 players go,’ said Van Gaal. ‘So how to fit in these players is not so difficult I think. ‘Then, also, we need the youth education and that is the policy of Manchester United. ‘We give youth players a chance,’ the new

by DAnny GRiffiTHs United boss added. ‘The question is if they take the chance.’ Van Gaal has already been impressed by Falcao in training and said: ‘When you can hire or buy a player like him, then I don’t have doubts because he is for me one of the best strikers in the world, and when you see his record it is unbelievable. ‘Today in training he got one ball and it was in the goal. So he confirmed it in his first training session with me.’ Falcao, loaned from Monaco, is excited by the prospect of staying with United for the long haul. ‘When I was in Porto, Atletico Madrid, I always wanted to improve and dream of playing in a team like this,’ he said. ‘Now I want to stay here for many years.’

The Rad Devils: Falcao and Van Gaal get acquainted during United training

Another major blow for Dubs as Mannion jets off WOunded dublin have suffered another major blow with the apparent loss of forward Paul Mannion for the next year, writes Paul Keane. Fresh from their All-Ireland semifinal defeat to donegal it’s been confirmed that the rising star forward has jetted out to China as part of his college course. It’s understood that the International Commerce student at uCd will be in Beijing for a year and will be unavailable to dublin. It’s a significant loss for boss Jim Gavin as he considers the 2015 season

and how he can change things around to get the dubs back to the top. Mannion (rioght) played a surprisingly small role in this year’s Championship, starting just the Leinster semi-final and final having broken onto the scene in 2013 with a Young Player of the Year nomination. But the Kilmacud Crokes man, who possesses All-Ireland medals at u-21 and senior level, was injured earlier in the year and remains a highly rated corner-forward.

Club boss Conor deegan confirmed that Mannion has already left the country and won’t be available to club or county. Meanwhile, dublin county board chairman Andy Kettle says the ‘mourning period’ is over following Anthony daly’s departure as county hurling manager. Capital chiefs are in the process of finding a replacement with under-age guru Shay Boland touted as an early contender.

‘We had a farewell night with Anthony and his selectors last Monday night,’ said Kettle. ‘I suppose the mourning period has passed and we are now into the job of finding the next dublin manager. ‘The approach is that we have sat down and identified some people who we will be contacting. We have also been contacted by some people, not very many. It’s a cat and mouse game, who wants to put their head above the parapet looking for the job and who is sitting there hoping they will be approached.’
