bins lockout ends as pay deal done LEAD THE WAY: Maia Dunphy and Irish Wolfhound Conall call for dog owners to sign up for the DSPCA Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest Dog Obedience Lesson, in Phoenix Park on Saturday Picture: Mac innes
GREYHOUND binmen have accepted revised pay cuts of up to 20 per cent, ending a 14-week lockout of the company. Siptu members employed by Greyhound Recycling and Recovery voted by a substantial majority (52 out of 78 strikers, with 15 abstentions) in favour of a new pay agreement at a staff meeting in Liberty Hall yesterday. After intense weekend negotiations between Siptu and management, the deal was presented to staff yesterday morning. The agreement includes a redundancy package of two weeks’ pay, plus statutory entitlements of two weeks per year of service for workers who have decided to leave Greyhound Recycling and Recovery. A picket of its
Clondalkin depot that management claimed threatened 400 jobs, will be lifted. Thirteen of the workers staying with the company will retain their previous terms and conditions. These workers will work on a Dublin City Council contract and be selected according to length of service. The rest of the workers staying at the firm agreed to a wage reduction of between 15 per cent and 20 per cent but will receive a lump sum to compensate. Greyhound had demanded cuts of 35 per cent, sparking the bitter dispute.

Murder rate surges by more than a third, but many crimes have fallen
Ireland’s murder rate has surged by a third, latest figures show. records reveal there were 60 people murdered in the 12-month period up to June. The figure represents a murder rate of more than one a week, but most murders are not linked to organised crime. There has also been a big rise in child abduction and human trafficking, the Central statistics Office study shows. Gardaí dealt with 39 cases of abduction of a child under 16 over the past year – up 144 per cent. The figures show smaller increases in robbery, theft, fraud, deception and drug-related offences
and a drop in many crimes including damage to property, public order offences and drink driving. Meanwhile, gardaí have issued guidelines for householders after it was revealed that burglaries increase by 25 per cent as the days get shorter. Figures from the an Garda síochána analysis service show home burglaries peak between 5pm and 11pm in the last months of the year. The most common points of entry are the front door (29 per cent), rear window (26 per cent) and rear door (22 per cent). sergeant Kevin Courtney warned even basic steps – like keeping your home well lit and storing valuables out of sight – can deter would-be robbers.

A widower whose wife died days after giving birth has told an inquest into her death he has lost the light of his life. dhara Kivlehan, 28, originally from india, died from multi-organ failure in Belfast’s royal Victoria Hospital on September 28, 2010, after suffering a severe strain of pre-eclampsia. She had been airlifted four days earlier from Sligo General Hospital. As the full inquest into her death opened in Carrick-on-Shannon courthouse, Michael Kivlehan, 34, revealed the devastation his wife’s death has wreaked on him personally as he raises their son dior. in a statement read to the hearing, Mr Kivlehan said: ‘i lost the light of my life the day dhara died. i do my best to raise dior as a single dad, but it’s difficult.’ A week shy of the four-year anniversary of his wife’s death, and a day after their

They moved to Co Leitrim for a quieter way of life and married in 2005. ‘it’s very important to me personally, and for dior, to know what happened to his mother and my wife in Sligo General Hospital,’ Mr Kivlehan told the inquest. ‘i have had no answers of how our care was then, or now to this day.’ Mr Kivlehan and dior were awarded almost €1million last year after the Health Service executive apologised for shortcomings in the young mother’s care. He criticised the four-year delay in the inquest taking place.

President warns against greedy ‘business as usual’ by bRiAn HuTTOn

New tenner, same tender
President Michael d Higgins has warned of a return to ‘business as usual’ in ireland as house prices soar and banks open up lending again. in a broad-ranging attack on the dominance of greed and self-interest in society, he said people were anxious about where the country was going. And, in what will be seen as a challenge to leaders, he said people were still awaiting alternatives to a market-controlled society. Ethical: Michael D speaking at a st Vincent de Paul event, Mr Higgins said the promise of stricter regulation was not enough to resolve the crisis created by the financial meltdown in 2008. ‘the risk, as i see it, is that if we do not tackle the assumptions that have inflicted such deep injuries on our moral imaginations, we will end up going back to “business as usual,”’ he said.

Fresh calls for ‘straight talk’ from Government A PETITION to get the Government to provide letters, forms and information material using purely simple language was launched yesterday. The National Adult Literacy Agency (Nala) has said that some 95 per cent of people would be in favour of plain English usage. It puts priority on everyday words, short sentences and readable font sizes ahead of specialised, complicated language. Nala director Inez Bailey said: ‘Citizens are more likely to understand their rights, and governments are more likely to make better use of their resources. ‘After all, plain English encourages individuals to engage with public services and make informed decisions when doing so.’ Plain English would also save the public sector time, money and frustration, she said. The National Consumer Agency (NCA),
which commits to using plain English on its website, welcomed the petition. NCA chief Karen O’Leary said that
it is helping her organisation to ‘provide consumers with clear and accessible information’.
Plainly speaking, that’s confusing…

Tesco in turmoil after profit error Tesco has suspended four executives and launched an accounting investigation after admitting that its half-year profit was overstated by £250million (€314million). The scandal deepens the financial woes for the British company which yesterday had to issue its third profit warning in two years as it struggles to compete with low-cost rivals. The announcements shocked investors in, the world’s second-largest supermarket chain after Walmart, with shares falling 10 per cent to 205.65 pence yesterday. Drop USC and up child allowance to spread real growth

our headline on Friday 19th – that the Irish economy is the best in Europe – is misleading. Ibec’s advice is like advice from a drunk in the pub. Ask anyone and most will tell you they’re still badly affected by Government policy. My big disappointment is that the present Government has in effect implemented very severe treatment against the very people that elected it. only when uSC is dropped and there is an increase in child allowance will we see a lift in the local economy. Kev ■ How nice of Julian and Jones’y to insult the population of the country they chose to live in, especially with Julian’s France having no economic growth and low employment. It’s also always nice when ‘natives’ like Eve and redsquirrel say anyone not like them is ‘too afraid or apathetic’. Since the Scotland debate is what has provoked this, it’s worth remembering that if public representation was linked to nation size,

Middle Abbey Street up to Jervis Street is one such example. There you dismount and walk on the footpath… the cyclist becomes a pedestrian when dismounted. When cycling, they should be on the road and adhere to the same rules as cars do, unless there is an exception for them signposted. Ah here, leaf it out: granny’s drug find A GIANT weed is enough to make any keen gardener mad. But greenfingered Patricia Hewitson was shocked when she learned a 5ft intruder that gave off a ‘sickly sweet pong’ was a cannabis plant. The 65-year-old made the discovery after emailing photos of the mysterious weed to her favourite radio show The Potting Shed, which forwarded the photos to the police. vised her on disposing of the plant. ‘It was very small at first, about the size of a petunia, with only four leaves. But I watched it grow until it was as tall as me,’ she said. ‘As it got bigger and bigger I got nervous because it was starting to look a bit suspicious.’ Grandmother Mrs Hewitson thinks a hemp seed was mixed into a 25kg bag of charity bird feed and into her flower bed.
‘The plant has been in full view of passers-by, but no one has asked me to sell them any,’ she added. Mrs Hewitson, from Exmouth, Devon, and husband John, 70, have cut down the plant, which is of the male variety and cannot be cultivated. Sgt ryan Canning of Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘If you come into possession of an illegal drug such as cannabis, you must either destroy it or take it to a police officer.’

Vera Lynn is just the tonic Winter is coming, but you can stave it off by drinking in the spirit of summer – gin. Aileen Donegan visits some of Dublin’s gin palaces
Ice and a slice: Gin has been rehabilitated in recent years
B
elieve it or not, gin used to have a bad reputation: the drink of choice for criminals, the underclass and most uncivilised members of society. in the 1750s gin was immortalised as the drink of the improper by artist William Hogarth. in 1751 he made two prints: Gin lane, depicting the evil addiction that, to him, accompanied the miserable drink; and Beer Street, which showed the health, vitality and merriment of life on the ale instead. Thankfully, the spirit has been rehabilitated in the interim and is the classy, ice-cool thirst-quencher of choice for sophisticates across the globe. Be it sour or sweet, a weekend treat or a post-work dabble, gone are the days when a quiet G&T meant being on the verge of tears – you know how that old miserable housewife line goes… it’s time to take gin’s bad reputation on a tasting test drive with a Dublin gin crawl. Kicking off the crawl is the Gin Palace on Abbey Street. With an impressive catalogue of gin to choose
from, i stick with my prescribed brand – Beefeater – and order a simple Tom Collins cocktail (€8.50) – lemon juice, sugar syrup, soda water – that’s a triumph of simplicity. Next i visit Temple Bar’s vintage Cocktail Club whose hard-to-find black façade blends into other shop fronts on the cobbled street. Small, dark and intimate, the first-floor bar oozes prohibition-era speakeasy, with candlelight and charm to boot. Go for Golden Fizz (€11.95), a frothy-headed citrus orange delight.
Delight: Golden Fizz
The distance from Grafton Street, where i nab a quick bite to eat – for cushioning – to leeson Street’s House Dublin is a great dinner walk off before drink No 3: a sour Bramble (€10) with crème de mure topped with ice chips and a strawberry. With almost 50 varieties to choose from, House is a veritable mother lode of gin and a must for the adventurous juniperjuice connoisseur. Pedal Pushing Monkey on Pembroke Street is a quaint bar that’s opened up recently. Ambiance is aplenty with a house saxman singing louis Armstrong – it’s a bar from another era. i order an Afternoon Tea (€10) – a strong, biting drink accompanied by the fresh skin of a lime. it’s in Peruke & Periwig’, a small, dark and respectable establishment on Dawson Street, that i get in last orders. Nom de Plume (€12) – a fruity, perfumey signature Beefeater cocktail, garnished with tiny rose buds – well worth the wait. Delissshhuuuus, i purr/slur as i don my coat, stumble to the door and think how Hogarth must be turning in his grave...
Lots of high spirits on tour with a difference Aileen Donegan visits Beefeater London’s visitor centre to find out more about her favourite tipple On a guided tour of the Beefeater grounds in Kennington, global brand officer Tim Stones’ enthusiasm for gin rubs off – gone is the sad stereotype of the lonely night’s G&T: the gin cocktail culture in london is booming. The new visitor centre offers a quaint, normally self-guided, tour with iPads that takes you through the history, the production and the place of gin in pop culture. Founded by entrepreneur James Burrough in the 19th century, Beefeater Gin prides itself on its unchanged recipe – nine natural botanicals make up the spirit, which are then steeped in grain spirit for 24 hours to enhance the taste before the distillation process. First things first: on beginning the tour, guests are transported back to the mid-18th
century in order to experience the so-called Gin Craze, a period when Britons began glugging the stuff at an alarming rate. Which became a problem when the city was overrun with drunks. Then we’re ushered past the prohibition era and on to the most colourful part of the museum: the cool, risqué advertising. Flash forward 170 years, the 1920s, when Prohibition – a nationwide ban on the sale of alcohol – gripped America. london’s free drinking culture was abuzz, creating excitement around the Beefeater brand along with it. ‘A tidal wave of thirsty Americans voyaged to london’s growing number of hotel bars and nightclubs to sip luscious cocktails,’ boasts a poster from the period with perhaps just a hint of embellishment. Here we take note of the birth and evolution of the cocktail: from the first concoction of gin and gingerbread in the 1730s, to 1853’s audacious Punch Jelly, a gelatinous jelly
Gin there, done that: The Beefeater Gin Museum offers a unique look at the drink through the years mould which required a spoon to drink. everybody knows of James Bond’s favourite ‘shaken, not stirred’ vesper, circa 1953, but have you had a 1984 sour Bramble? Once we’re ushered past the prohibition era lifestyle – and introduced to the novel ways gin distillers hid the drink from the authorities; think Homer Simpson versus Rex Banner – we move on to the most colourful
part of any of museum: the cool, risqué advertising. The Beefeater London: The Home Of Gin Visitor Centre, 20 Montford Place, London SE11 5DE. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am6pm. Tickets: Adult £12, Student £10.80 and children under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

Cake it snAppy It might sound like a gimmick but mug cakes are the smart way to bake in the modern world – you don’t need to faff about with scales as all the quantities in this book are given in spoonfuls or ‘slices’ and you don’t have to worry about pre-heating the oven because the cakes cook in a
microwave in five minutes. Even better, you mix most of the ingredients in the mug, which can then go in a dishwasher, so there’s hardly any mess. And while the method may be basic, the results are not, because there are so many flavours to try – chocolate fondant anyone?
Blueberry-ricotta mug cake Ingredients 1 slice of butter 1cm thick (30g) ♦ 1 egg ♦ 2 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar ♦ 1 tsp vanilla sugar ♦ 1 tbsp ricotta ♦ 2 or 3 pinches of lemon zest ♦ 5 tbsp plain (all-purpose) flour ♦ ½ tsp baking powder ♦ 2 tbsp fresh blueberries (or 1 tbsp frozen blueberries)
muG cake TIPS Mug cakes continue to cook when you take them out of the microwave. Don’t worry if the surface is soft, it will dry and set in two minutes. Power settings vary depending on the microwave, so you may need to alter the time. Mug cakes that contain chocolate tend to dry out more quickly. use mugs that are microwave safe. Mug cakes don’t keep – so tuck in immediately.
Marshmallow mug cake
Ingredients 1 slice of butter 1cm thick ♦ 1 egg ♦ 1 ½ tbsp caster (superfine) sugar ♦ 1 tbsp single (light) cream ♦ 3 tbsp smooth peanut butter ♦ 5 tbsp plain flour ♦ ½ tsp baking powder ♦ 1 marshmallow ♦ icing sugar, to decorate Method Melt the butter in a bowl for 20sec (800 watts). In a mug: beat in one by one the egg, sugar, cream, peanut butter, flour, baking powder and melted butter. Add the marshmallow cut into quarters to the top of the mixture. Cook in the microwave for 1m 40 sec (800 watts). Decorate with the icing sugar.
Chocolate fondant mug cake
Ingredients 1 thin slice of butter (10g) ♦ 1 egg ♦ 4 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar ♦ ½ tsp vanilla sugar ♦ 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder ♦ Decoration 1 square of milk chocolate ♦ Raspberries (optional) ♦ Small meringues (optional) Method Melt the butter in a bowl in the microwave for 10sec (800 watts). In a mug: beat in one by one the egg, sugar, vanilla sugar, melted butter and cocoa. Cook in the microwave for 1 minute (800 watts). Decorate with milk chocolate, chopped, a few raspberries and small meringue.
Mug Cakes, Lene Knudsen (Hardie Grant, €11)
Method Melt the butter in a bowl in the microwave for 20sec (800 watts). In a mug: beat in one by one the egg, sugar, vanilla sugar, ricotta, lemon zest, flour, baking powder and melted butter. Stir in the blueberries. Cook in the microwave for 1 minute 40 seconds (800 watts).
TOP TOPPINGS
Make a mug cake amazing with a layer of tasty topping. Chocolate Sauce Put five squares of chocolate in a mug and melt in the microwave for 30 sec (800 watts). Add 1 tsp of neutral oil and stir: it should be smooth. Icing Put 4 level tbsp of icing sugar and 1 tsp of water into a bowl. Mix and pour over the mug cake once cooked. Decorate with hundreds and thousands. White chocolate sauce Put six squares of white chocolate into a mug, add 2 tbsp of single cream and melt in the microwave (800 watts) for about 30 sec. Take it out and stir for an even consistency. If it is too thick, return to the microwave for a further 10 sec. Set aside. Fruit coulis Crush 6 tbsp of red berries in a bowl with 2 level tbsp of icing sugar. Mix, then trickle over mug cake. Cream cheese icing In a bowl, mix 75g fresh cream cheese with a slice of soft butter ½cm thick (15g), 2 level tbsp of icing sugar and 1 level tsp of lemon zest. Stir until smooth. Take your mug cake out of the microwave and spread a thin layer of frosting over the top.

InsTAnT EXpERT why microsoft bought minecraft Minecraft is a video game about survival. In a way, it makes Microsoft’s €1.94million purchase a case of life imitating art. By buying Minecraft’s maker, Mojang, it’s protecting its future. Here are five reasons why. ● Microsoft is desperately chasing the youth market with its Windows phones by making them ever more affordable and in desirable colours. Getting kids on board a brand is smart – and youngsters think Minecraft is cool. ● The Apple App Store has 1.2million apps. The Windows Phone store is only approaching 500,000. If you can match quantity, then go for quality. Having Minecraft exclusive to its smartphone operating system means just that. And it’s the second most popular paid-for app on Apple devices too.
Music to our ears: Paul Cocksedge’s invention means you need never throw away your old speakers
Vamp up the sound to save your system s top, look, listen and think: before you throw away your old hi-fi, pick up a Vamp because it might just give your vintage speakers a new lease of life. this cute cube of Bluetooth glory wires up to the back of any traditional speaker, turning it wireless so that you can stream songs from your smartphone, tablet or laptop. With a built-in amp and ten-hour rechargeable battery, the Vamp makes any speaker portable and can handle physical connections too, so you can plug in old ipods, Walkmans and USB turntables. the palm-sized box is magnetic and sticks to the outside of the speak-

er, where it picks up something internal to cling on to, and can also be connected to two tw speakers. Designer paul Cocksedge came up with the idea as a way of revitalising old analogue speakers rather than ha having them replaced by sometimes inferior wireless ones – though the streaming sound quality will vary depending on the RETRO: Listen speakers. Charity to your music and second-hand old school shops have become
a haven for retro hi-fi equipment and it’s no surprise that the device has received an Elle award nomination for Best British Sustainable Design of the last year. Cocksedge says: ‘For me, reusing perfectly good technology makes sense. Hearing the rich sound coming out of these older speakers in a new way is a delight.’ We’ve been waiting for what seems an age for the crowdfunded device to go on sale and you can get one in red, white or black for €64 at thevamp.co.uk. With wireless speakers and multi-room solutions such as Sonos costing hundreds of euro and the bewildering choice becoming a minefield to navigate for music fans, this is a neat solution – and great for gifting.
● Microsoft makes the Xbox games console. It now owns an extremely popular video game, which it might sell exclusively on its own machine, or persuade rivals Sony and Nintendo to pay for the privilege. ● Don’t forget grown-ups play Minecraft too. Some servers are adult-only and the game carries as much appeal with big kids as it does little. The fanbase is also incredibly loyal and loyalty breeds royalties. ● Spin-offs are another money-maker. Just think of Star Wars. Minecraft means toys, clothing, cartoons – any type of consumable media or merriment imaginable. JD

In extremely wet conditions the Irishman took control of the race from the start yesterday, posting the fastest time at each time check along the route. With three riders to go, it looked like Ireland would secure the gold, until a fast finishing Campbell Flakemore (Aus) narrowly pipped Mullen, to take the World Title. Flakemore took gold, Mullen silver, and Stefan Keung (SUI) won the bronze medal. Earlier, Josie Knight crashed in the Junior Women’s Time Trial, finishing in 37th position. The Championships run until September 28.
next year we’ll be even better, says kerry boss For a while there during the summer, not even the bookies were interested in bets on Dublin winning five all-ireland titles in a row. The odds, amazingly, were as low as 3/1. a couple of months on, however, Kerry are all-ireland champions and given how they are shaping up for 2015 they have more reason than most to be enthused about what the future holds. That’s not to say Dublin can’t reel them in, but Kerry will almost certainly be significantly stronger next year. aside from the gifted Colm Cooper making his anticipated return from long-term knee trouble, 2009 medallist Tommy walsh will also be back. Manager eamonn Fitzmaurice confirmed yesterday that
by pAuL kEAnE powerful walsh, still just 26 yet an aussie rules professional for the last five years, should be back. ‘would i expect him back? i’d say there’s a good chance he’ll be back, yeah,’ said Fitzmaurice, who is already eyeing a successful title defence.
‘It’s an exciting time for Kerry football’ ‘i remember watching the Sunday Game after last year’s final and Jim Gavin saying that other teams around the country were already making plans for next year. ‘So, yeah, of course the thoughts start to turn over to next
year. having Colm back in harness again, the growth of those young fellas this year, how much experience they’ve got, there’s a lot to look forward to. ‘having the winter together, getting the team holiday in, that’ll all make them tighten again. So it’s a very exciting time to be involved.’ Fitzmaurice and his jubilant Kerry players returned home to a heroes’ welcome last night. They were joined by the successful minor side. Former Kingdom defender Fitzmaurice said the senior win was partly rooted in a heavy defeat to neighbours Cork in the league. ‘it was very flat that day for whatever reason. it was a fork in the road from the point of view that we vowed that it would never happen again.’

Durcan dodges questions over his ‘calamitous’ error
Game to forget: Keeper Paul Durcan
So WhAT exactly was Paul Durcan thinking? It was a question that prompted a thousand bar stool debates on Sunday night yet, many hours later, there were still no definitive conclusions. The Donegal goalkeeper looked bright eyed and fresh at their Citywest hotel base yesterday but politely refused requests for an interview which, inevitably, would have centred on Sunday’s calamitous error. The vastly experienced keeper miscued an attempted short kick-
out in the 52nd minute, directing the ball to Kerry’s Kieran Donaghy. Moments later, Donegal’s net rippled and, ultimately, Kerry won by three.
‘I thought the referee struggled for periods’ Manager Jim McGuinness couldn’t explain the situation either but gave some credence to the suggestion that Durcan may have mistaken Donaghy for a Donegal
player given the similar colours of their jerseys. ‘Well they (the colours) were very close,’ said McGuinness. ‘We were going to propose in the run-up to the game, maybe to go in white. But listen, you’d be nit picking. ‘I thought the referee struggled for periods of the game. he didn’t have an impact on the game in terms of swaying the game one way or the other but these are all wee bits and pieces. ‘For me, from a coaching point of view, we needed more energy. We
needed more synergy coming out of defence. We needed to take the game to them and these are the things that are core values of what we do and that’s the disappointing thing, more than anything else.’ Durcan has a decision to make now about whether or not to stay on. At 31, he may potentially be among the players that McGuinness says are planning to retire. ‘There are probably one or two players that won’t be back, if I’m gauging the thing right,’ said McGuinness.

Slow start: Kaboul
Kaboul is puzzled by sluggish Spurs YOUNES KABOUL admits Tottenham were at a loss to explain their sluggish display in Sunday’s defeat to struggling West Brom. The Frenchman’s debut as official captain became a nightmare as Spurs managed just one shot on target. ‘We’re all disappointed,’ said the 28year-old defender. ‘We played with a slow tempo all game and never looked dangerous, a threat for West Brom.’ Kaboul insists it is back to the drawing board ahead of tomorrow’s home Capital One Cup tie with Nottingham Forest. ‘I am questioning everything, what went wrong,’ he added. ‘We didn’t create any chances. We were just inviting them to try to score. But that’s football and we have to go back to training with a better mentality.’

Arsenal are the biggest threat, says Kompany
Manchester city captain Vincent Kompany believes the Premier League title race is destined to ‘get messy’ with arsenal arguably an even bigger threat than chelsea in a three-way battle with the champions. ten-man city fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Jose Mourinho’s table-toppers on sunday, leaving the Londoners three points clear at the summit. southampton and aston Villa currently occupy second and third places in the table but are unlikely challengers in the long run, with most observers still expecting city to lead the challenge on chelsea. the weekend showdown at the etihad

Murphy, who would be willing to speak to the Cottagers about a role in their new management team, has been outspoken on the German’s puzzling regime. Sometimes the players were given no tactics at all.’ Ahead of tonight’s Capital One Cup visit of Doncaster to Craven Cottage, BBC pundit Murphy added: ‘I haven’t spoken to anyone yet [from Fulham] but if they approached me, of course [I’d speak to them].’

Facing Frank is a bit weird for Blues pair Chelsea pair andre schurrle and Gary Cahill admit it was a strange experience to be on the receiving end of a Frank lampard goal on sunday. The Blues were well on the way to winning the heavyweight clash against title rivals Manchester City, with substitute schurrle putting them 1-0 in front shortly after Pablo Zabaleta’s sending off handed them the initiative. But it was the familiar figure of Chelsea’s record goalscorer lampard – in the unfamiliar light blue of City – who ensured the spoils were shared with a trademark run into the box and a calm volleyed finish. The former england midfielder, on a short-term loan from his new employers New York City following 13 years at stamford Bridge, had mixed emotions about his first strike for the champions and he was not the
only one to feel unusual about his decisive cameo. Centre-back Cahill said: ‘It was weird of course because you think of Frank in a Chelsea shirt. ‘It’s been that way for many, many years. We’ve seen him score that kind of goal so many times over the years.’ schurrle said: ‘It’s strange to see him in another shirt. ‘We wanted to win this match but he scored for Man City. Of course it’s nice for him to get his first goal but we wanted the win and we were very close to that.’ The German forward, who tapped in for his second goal of the season, conceded Chelsea were well-placed to take maximum points from the game. ‘It was important not to lose here, that was our goal,’ he said. ‘But when you’re so close to winning and you’re a man in front obviously it’s disappointing not to win, but we have to keep going now and win the next match.’

Cut above: Fowler
U-s-shave! U-s-shave!
THeRe’S going to be plenty of patriotism on show this week but nobody has gone as far yet as Rickie Fowler, who has had a very special haircut for the occasion. It certainly seems to have gone down a storm with the two captains. Tom Watson said yesterday: ‘I thought it was terrific. It brings a spirit, a light spirit to the team.’ Opposite number Paul Mcginley was even more effusive in his praise. ‘It’s brilliant. The guy is so passionate about his country he will go and do that for the Ryder Cup,’ said the european skipper.
by nick METcALfE at gleneagles Paul McGinley insists europe being Ryder Cup favourites this week is ‘irrelevant’. The european captain is well aware of the expectations for success at Gleneagles, given home advantage and the fact four players in his team are in the world’s top six. But speaking to reporters yesterday, McGinley said: ‘We have assembled a great team, arguably the strongest european team ever, but there is a word of warning as well. ‘if you know Tom Watson, that glint never leaves his eye, he’s a real competitive guy.’ ‘The bottom line is this is a very strong american team. The favourite or not favourite tag is irrelevant as far as i’m concerned. ‘We’re going to have to play really well to win this Ryder Cup. i certainly won’t be underestimating the american team. if we’re going to win this, we’ve got to be on it.’ McGinley also dismissed any concerns over
Tom tells USA to use defeat as motivation TOM WaTSOn has told his american team to make up for their agonising defeat at Medinah two years ago. The USa captain said: ‘I made it clear to them this trip is a redemption trip. Those players that played on that team, it’s time to make amends and redeem yourselves. It’s a motivation, rather than a negative.’
‘If we are to win this, we have to be on it’ Rory Mcilroy after the northern irishman attended various events last week – including the George Groves fight in london and appearing on TV – just days after saying he needed a rest following his exertions in the Tour Championship finale. ‘Resting doesn’t necessarily mean lying in bed or lying by the pool,’ McGinley said. ‘Going out and doing things like going to the boxing, those are things he enjoys doing. ‘i don’t really have any concern. He’s fresh, he’s ready.’

‘Espionage’ common among elite GAA teams, says McGuinness DOnegal manager Jim Mcguinness claims spying on opponents or ‘espionage’ is commonplace among elite teams, writes Paul Keane. Kerry-based Donegal native Patrick Roarty, a friend of Mcguinness, was spotted observing a Kerry training session from a nearby tree in the build-up to last Sunday’s all-Ireland final. Mcguinness yesterday insisted that the man had no association to the Donegal team and laughed off the situation, describing it as ‘bizarre’.
But he claimed that, in general, spying is rife among top counties and stated that many Donegal sessions have been looked at by rivals. ‘espionage, I suppose, is a very strong word to use, but it’s going on all the time,’ said Mcguinness (pictured), whose side lost by three points to Kerry. ‘We put people out of our training on Wednesday
night last and maybe three or four times in the lead-in. ‘It’s going on for the last three or four years. That’s the kind of craic that’s going on. He (Roarty) is not associated to our camp but there’s no doubt that he’s probably watching training. ‘and we have had that. We train in MacCumhaill Park some days and we have people in the hotel, looking down from the hotel at us.
‘I’m not saying it was Kerry. I’m not saying that. But previous years as well. We were once playing a team and we worked out that one of the coaches was staying in a local hotel. This is what goes on. It’s fine margins.’ Roarty hails from the same naomh Conaill club as Mcguinness and mingled for several hours at the team’s Citywest Hotel base with players and supporters yesterday, as well as on Sunday night.
