High seas: €80m of coke on yacht
CROCODILE CHEERS: A baby dwarf crocodile casts a cold eye on its surroundings at a zoo in Leipzig, Germany. The zoo has been breeding the endangered crocodiles since 1996 and is celebrating some new arrivals picture: epa
Three men, believed to be British, were held yesterday after the Navy stormed a yacht suspected of carrying around €80million worth of cocaine. The 60ft vessel was intercepted some 200 miles off Mizen head in the early hours of Tuesday morning but details have just emerged. It is understood the men on board put up no resistance to the armed Naval team who had launched on smaller rib boats from the offshore patrol vessel, the Le Niamh. Another major vessel, the Le róisín, provided backup during the operation. early indications have put the suspected one-tonne haul of cocaine at a street value of €80million, with some estimates suggesting it could be even higher. If confirmed, it would be one of biggest such drugs seizures at sea anywhere in europe this year. The vessel was being towed to haulbowline naval base in Cork last night. The three men were to be arrested by gardaí on shore. The vessel was identified as the Makayabella. A joint task force, involving the Irish Navy, revenue and the Garda, said the night-time covert surveillance operation was carried out in challenging conditions. The interception followed intelligence from the National Crime Agency in the UK and the French custom service, through the Maritime

Analysis and Operations Centre based in Lisbon. Defence Minister Simon Coveney congratulated the agencies involved in what he described as a highly successful drug interdiction operation. ‘I wish to congratulate the Naval Service for its pivotal role in the success of this operation and, in particular, to commend the officers commanding Le Niamh and Le róisín and their respective crews,’ he said. ‘I also wish to acknowledge the role of the Air Corps in providing topcover support during the operation.’ The passage around the south-west coast of Ireland has been well used in recent times by drugs smugglers bringing shipments from South America and Africa into europe. In 2007, a record €440million worth of cocaine was seized in Dunlough Bay in west Cork when a UK gang botched an attempt to bring the massive haul ashore on a smaller boat that capsized in rough weather. Most of the group, including two englishmen, were arrested in followup operations and eventually given lengthy prison sentences. Just a year later, a €400million haul was intercepted on the Dances With Waves yacht about 150 miles off Mizen head. Three British men on board were later jailed for ten years each for their part in the plot.

Gardaí arrest 100 in Europe-wide blitz on criminals MOrE than 100 people have been arrested in Ireland as part of what has been described as the single largest assault on organised crime right across Europe. Operation Archimedes is targeting almost all kinds of crime, ranging from drug-trafficking to illegal immigration, tax fraud, counterfeiting and theft. Already 1,027 arrests have been made across the continent and 30 romanian children were saved from being trafficked. The operation started on September 15. It also netted large amounts of drugs, including cocaine and heroin. Europol director rob Wainwright said the operation ‘has led, I think, to a very significant attack on the whole criminal infrastructure in Europe’.
by bRiAn HuTTOn He continued: ‘Operation Archimedes is a milestone in attempts by the law-enforcement community to deliver concerted action against organised crime groups in Europe.’ As part of the operation, 106 arrests have been made in Ireland.
30 Romanian children saved from trafficking These include 40 for burglary, 16 for theft and others for handling stolen goods, counterfeiting currency, criminal damage, public order offences, possession of weapons and one arrest for sexual offences. Law enforcement authorities from
34 countries are involved in the continuing operation. Europol said the operation is focused on the disruption of the activities of the m o s t threatening crimin a l groups across E u rope.

Terrorists behead hiker in horrifying new video
Rallying cry: President Obama chairs a meeting of the UN Security Council dealing with international terrorism
Obama calls for unity to tackle terror BARACK Obama called on the world to unite in ‘war’ on the IS ‘network of death’ – just before the UK parliament was recalled to answer his rallying cry. The US president’s rousing words were delivered to world leaders at the UN as he vowed to ‘declare war on war’. He argued that the only language understood by these ‘killers’ was ‘force’ and there could be ‘no negotiation with this brand of evil.’ Speaking in New York, he said: ‘They have embraced a nightmarish vision that would divide the world into adherence and infidels, killing as many innocent civilians as possible.’ Less than two hours later, David Cameron recalled Britain’s parliament for tomorrow to vote on air strikes against IS in Iraq, but not Syria, as early as the weekend. However, he said that he has no plan to put British troops on the ground in the region. ‘When we are threatened in this way, we should not turn away from what needs to be done,’ said Mr Cameron.
HATE preacher Abu Qatada was cleared of plotting terror attacks by a court in Jordan yesterday – ending an eight-year legal battle. Once regarded as Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe, he repeatedly foiled British efforts to extradite him. The 53-year-old cleric returned to his homeland last year and is now free to resume preaching after a judge ruled there was not enough evidence to link him to a bomb plot. The deputy prime minister Nick Clegg said the Liberal Democrats would be supporting the government motion to destroy ‘this medieval murderous organisation’ and Labour leader Ed Miliband said he would consider any request from Cameron ‘very seriously’.

WITH the US air force engaged in strikes on militants in Iraq, you would think their commander-in-chief would be keen to stay onside with his own troops. However, Barack Obama was snapped by his own staff giving a half-hearted salute to Marines – while holding a coffee cup. Yesterday’s faux pas in New York harked back to George W Bush’s 2001 effort as he held his dog Barney.
A VIDEO has been released showing a French hiker being beheaded by a group linked to IS. Herve Gourdel, a mountain guide from Nice, was kidnapped on Sunday by Jund al Khalifa in north-east Algeria. On Tuesday the militants warned that the 55-year-old (pictured) would be ‘dead within 24 hours’ if France did not halt air strikes in Iraq but president Francois
Hollande refused to back down. The video of Mr Gourdel’s death shows him flanked by two hooded gunmen and is entitled ‘Message of blood for the French government’. n Three suspected Islamic terrorists escaped when officials in Turkey put them on the wrong plane. French police were waiting to arrest them at Orly airport in Paris. But Turkish police sent them to Marseille.

KEN ROGAN does not feel any sense of outrage that corporations such as Apple and Google may soon have to pay their fair share of tax in Ireland
I
’m thinking we should get off the idea of naming economies after animals and branch out. hurricanes are named after people, so let’s name economies after confidence tricks: the Celtic Switcheroo. the Spanish Prisoner. the Egyptian Pyramid. the italian Job. Or if we’re going to stick with animals, then let’s try the trojan-horse economy. Or the Flying Pig. Or the Lying Bastard Dog. in the meantime, death and taxes (or just death, if you’re an irishbased corporation) remain the wryly observed certainties of this twotrack life. But tell us something we don’t know, right? Because you definitely do know our corporate tax rate is 12.5 per cent – and that this is a fly in the EU’s ointment. And you likely know that ireland has been described as a tax haven, with the likes of Apple, google, and the pharma companies basing themselves here, in part, for tax purposes. You also probably know that despite the 12.5 per cent rate, most of these companies pay nothing like that amount of tax, if any at all.
And you may or may not know that this can be managed via something called the ‘Double irish’ (not whiskey-related) and/or ‘Dutch sandwich’ (not sex-related) which nevertheless combine to create a tax orgasm for multinationals. And, without a hint of irony, a doubleDutch sandwich. this is where (giant oversimplification) you split your company in two and register in
Dublin, but base one arm in taxpayers – can funnel fortunes through ireland tax-free, or close to Bermuda, then you charge yourself ‘royalties’ which leave the country it, is appallingly unfair and unjust tax-free. Broadly. that’s not when you consider our governments regarded as sneaky or underhanded, took €27+ billion out of our that’s actually the policy we economy over the last five years designed to get corporations to through tax hikes and spending cuts. come here in the first place. But do we actually care? the government line on actually i’m going to go ahead and say, no, taxing companies to the full (and we don’t, or certainly not in infamously generous) 12.5 per cent sufficient numbers to drive any sort of change. the optimist in is that the big guns will leave with their jobs, me thinks partly this and maybe is down to the (maybe!) that complexity, if not Governments took applies to 7,000+ of over €27billion out of opacity, blue chip internet modern finance, our economy over the but my inner jobs, and about 50,000 pharma pessimist also last five years through recognises and related jobs, that tax hikes and cuts but there are we’ve all seen hundreds if not enough tax haven thousands of entities stories, or heard enough ‘based’ in ireland that are criticism of our corporate really just box files sitting in a law tax rate to know that we’re not firm’s offices and they pay little or playing by the same rules as no tax and create no jobs. everyone else, we’re doing what suits us. true to form. Did we all know that? And should we even care? And now the OECD has proposals hell yes, we should. the idea that to put a check on this sort of thing globally. this is a great thing, the wealthiest companies on earth – some of whom were bailed out by philosophically speaking.
“
We finally have some sort of concerted political response to corporate tax avoidance, which is about the only positive step you can point to in the aftermath of the crash in 2008. Of course this presents ireland with something of an ethical dilemma, because what’s ‘great’ may not be great for us. Fortunately, ethics in this fair land are a bit like seasoning – they definitely add something to a meal, but their absence certainly doesn’t preclude dinner being served. And never mind all that! the government’s next Budget might even see your own ‘quantities eased’ now that we have returned to ‘growth’, and you can’t beat growth (unless you personally are the one with the growth). We’re back in the good times, riding on the wings of the ‘Celtic Phoenix’, which is probably a more apt moniker than the Celtic tiger, because the Phoenix is a mythical creature that literally goes down in flames, whereas a tiger is something that has actually lived and continues to live and is real.

A MOTHER-Of-TwO has splashed out €25,000 on seven dolls – but refuses to treat her real children. Kerrie williams has spent a fortune on clothes, toys and accessories including a €1,200 pram for her collection of seven ‘reborns’ – lifelike vinyl dolls that resemble babies. The 33-year-old’s hobby has left her with little spare cash to spend on daughters Karina, 13, and Jade, 12. ‘My daughters are always asking me for new clothes. I tell them it’s a waste of money because they will grow out of them,’ she said. ‘Karina wanted a pair of Vans trainers and was furious when I told her I couldn’t afford them. ‘She gets jealous because I bought the reborns the same pair – but they can wear them forever.’ The part-time carer has splashed out on min-
by HADLEy MiDDLETOn iature designer outfits for the dolls including ones by Ralph Lauren and Converse. She started collecting the figures, which can cost up to €600 each, to cope with a miscarriage in 2012. Her collection includes twins Corey and Cody, and ‘vampire babies’ Lillith and Lilliana. Another, called Till, was designed to look like the child she and her expartner Paul, 35, lost. Ms williams, of Co Durham, UK, often takes her dolls out in their pushchairs. She said some people were supportive but others ‘taunt the babies and say they look like dead children, but I think my babies are beautiful.’

teen ‘inspired by islamic State’
Terror suspect gunned down
A TEENAGE terror suspect was shot dead by police in Australia after stabbing two counter-terrorism officers. The 18-year-old, identified as Abdul Numan Haider, attacked the men at a Melbourne police station having been asked to answer questions there. He was then gunned down by one of the officers. The two men are in a stable condition in hospital. It has emerged that Haider’s passport was cancelled on national security this month. He was thought to have recently been seen waving an Islamic State flag at a shopping centre. The teenager’s attack followed a call by IS spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani to kill people of various nationalities, including Australian. Prof Michael Wesley, an expert in
by DAniEL binns national security at the Australian National University, said the ‘fatwa’ from al-Adnani had inspired Haider. ‘It’s an incitement to lone-wolf attacks,’ he stated. Haider reportedly made threats against Australian prime minister Tony Abbott, who is due to attend a United Nations Security Council meeting about foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq. ‘This [attack in Melbourne] indicates there are people in our community who are capable of very extreme acts,’ Mr Abbott said. The terror warning in Australia is at its second-highest level. Its military jets are expected to take part in air strikes against IS in Iraq.

Litter of the law A DETERMINED street cleaner showed her devotion to duty by making sure a crime scene was given a full forensic sweep. The woman ducked under a ‘police, do not cross’ cordon around the scene of a brawl and began to pick up litter. She carried on until an officer interrupted to let her know evidence could not be tided away. Railway worker James Galbraith,
21, said: ‘She was just tidying up by the bus stop when she wandered through the cordon and carried on. ‘It was a bit of a surprise but she’s a regular at cleaning this part of town. ‘When the police officer came over and had a few words she just left.’ The cordon outside Romford railway station, in north-east London, was to protect evidence after a fight outside a nightclub on Monday.

INDIA has become the first Asian country to put a satellite in orbit around Mars – for the bargain price of €50million. Workers at the Indian Space and Research Organisation broke into wild cheers when the spacecraft completed 24 minutes of engine burn around the Red Planet. The Mars Orbiter Mission has been hailed a ‘flawless success’ by the space agency. Indian prime minister Narendra
by NICOLE LE MARIE Modi said: ‘We have gone beyond the boundaries of human enterprise and innovation.’ The orbiter will circle Mars for at least six months, gathering data that could shed light on its weather systems and the water that once existed on the planet. India’s mission has cost about a tenth of Nasa’s current Maven mission to Mars.

People in low-status, poorly paid jobs who work 55 hours or more a week are 30 per cent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those putting in 35 to 40 hours, scientists found. Researchers analysed data from more than 222,000 men and women who participated in diabetes studies in the the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia. Lead scientist Professor Mika Kivimaki, from University College London, said: ‘Health professionals should be aware of a significantly increased risk in people who are doing low socio-economic status jobs.’

Rantic Marketing said the EmmaYouArenext.com countdown website, which redirects to Rantic’s own homepage, is part of a campaign to bring down 4chan, an anonymous bulletin board which has been hosting nude pictures of a number of other female celebrities. The Emma Watson threat, made after she delivered a gender-equality speech at the united nations, was originally attributed to 4chan. hen the three Israeli teen settlers were killed, Israel retaliated immediately, by bombing ‘suspected’ hamas militants’ family homes, leading to the last Gaza conflict with 2,300 Gazans killed, 80 per cent of whom were civilians, including 500 children and four journalists. These are Un figures. Israel has since admitted that hamas was not involved in the killing of the three Israeli teens. So, yesterday, they hunted down and murdered two more Palestinians, without trial, as the world looks on and accepts this as justice. no doubt some Zionist apologist will write in to say how Israel ‘has no choice’ and that I’m an

Organising a wedding can be a stressful task. Angharad Williams tries to make it easier with some much-needed advice on choosing the dress, the venue and the honeymoon
W
edding dress shopping is one of the most fun and exciting parts of being a bride, but it can become overwhelming given the amount of choice available. stylist and personal shopper Marietta doran says doing some research and having an idea of what you want is key to finding the dress. ‘Bring photos and images from magazines of styles and dresses you like. if there’s a dress you own that you like bring that with you also.’ While some wedding dress styles remain classic and timeless, there are elements that have appeared across bridal design house collections. designers from Oscar de la renta to Vera Wang featured Chantilly lace, embellishments and embroidery, silk organza and tulle in their latest collections of bridal gowns. The traditional mermaid silhouette and ball gowns continue to prove popular with brides and most collections feature these styles. More daring designers have opted
for short dresses, while a look that has emerged on the bridal scene is colourful wedding gowns in every shade from bright pink to black. ‘styles and trends come and go,’ Marietta says, ‘but there is definitely a return to the traditional and classic bride. Think romance, lace, flowers and plenty of trains.’ grooms are also veering away from the traditional black morning suit with some subtle variations. The vintage look features heavily, with grey and retro cuts being seen in many 2015 collections. ‘The twopiece single-breasted suit in navy is very popular with grooms. navy works well with all skin tones and colours, but it’s remains simple and chic,’ Marietta says. if you’re a guest at a wedding then Marietta also has some shopping advice. ‘Vintage is very popular at the moment. stay away from bright or loud colours and avoid styles that are too short. ‘Accessories can up-style any outfit, while hats and wraps are a great way to re-invent a look. Alterations are also a clever way of changing an outfit that you already own.’

edding planning is a stressful experience and by the time the big day comes you deserve a holiday. One of the highlights of getting married is the honeymoon and the chance to relax. But when it comes to choosing your honeymoon destination you can be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice. do you blow the budget and head to the sun or do like Kim and Kanye and enjoy the best that ireland has to offer? According to Weddings Online, the average spend by irish couples on the honeymoon is €3,916, making it the biggest expense after the venue. The same survey found that 89 per cent of couples chose to honeymoon abroad while 11 per cent spend their honeymoon in ireland. Thanks to cheaper airfares, couples tend to go further afield than the traditional honeymoon spots of France and italy. According to google, 2014’s
trending honeymoon destination is new Zealand followed by Cancun in Mexico. They’re followed by the islands of the Maldives and tropical Bali, while closer to home Croatia’s dalmatian Coast is a popular choice. irish travel agents report a rise in bookings to South Africa, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as South and Central American destinations of Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Costa Rica. Couples are also using the break to do some travelling and opting for the maximoon – a honeymoon that lasts more than three weeks. Travel agents also reported that cruises are gaining in popularity. not everyone has the money to spend on extended holidays, and some people don’t have the option of taking lots of time off work. With the cost of an irish wedding now averaging at about €20,000 lots of couples are spending their money on the wedding and cutting back on the honeymoon. The minimoon, a honeymoon that lasts less than two weeks, has been on the rise since the star of the recession. These couples opt for shorter breaks tend to stay closer to home and will honeymoon in destinations like dubrovnik and Venice.

Let me guess: yet another hackneyed overview of the capital’s architectural history? Not at all. There is undoubtedly a glut of nonfiction titles dealing with the subject of Dublin’s fluid skyline, but in this intriguing little volume, journalist and academic Karl Whitney really does have something new to offer. Forget hoary old tributes to picturepostcard Dublin with its familiar Georgian gems and leafy parks, because Whitney’s interests lie elsewhere. tell me more.
Ugh. So it’s not aimed at tourists then? Anyone with an interest, however tenuous, in modern Dublin will find plenty to pique their curiosity here. Even those of us who’ve never so much as broken the spine on Ulysses can enjoy Whitney’s jaundiced account of his ill-fated attempts to visit each of Joyce’s childhood homes on an icy January day. Of the surfeit of inscriptions to the author he finds dotted about the capital, he remarks drily: ‘Joycean Dublin suffered from a needless build-up of plaque.’
Mr MaC and Me by esther Freud
esther Freud’s richly atmospheric novel stems from a kernel of historical truth. in 1914, the artist and architect Charles rennie Mackintosh, shattered by the indifference of his fellow Glaswegians, sought solace in the Suffolk coastline. in Freud’s invention, thomas Maggs, a watchful local boy who narrates this story of a small north Sea community adapting to wartime, befriends the Mackintoshes. But he also spies on them, mindful of his fellow villagers’ unease that the patriotic loyalties of these cultured interlopers could lie elsewhere. the author – a daughter of Lucian Freud – is particularly skilled at describing how artists work. Meticulously researched, this builds slowly into a moving, vividly evocative narrative. Patricia Nicol Bloomsbury, out now

Hidden City Adventures And explorAtions in dublin by KArl Whitney
In Hidden City, Whitney sets himself a series of offbeat, sometimes onerous challenges – including visiting every one of James Joyce’s 20 Dublin residences in a single day – which are the focus of this meticulously constructed travelogue. As a native of Tallaght, Whitney is far more interested in peripheral urban spaces that are politely skirted over in guide books, including ‘the industrial badlands of the Poolbeg Peninsula’, than he is in the sanitised, soft-focus vision of the capital pedalled by Bord Fáilte. At one point, he even dons a boilersuit for a far-from-salubrious journey under the Liberties to examine its subterranean rivers. Elsewhere, he gets to grips with the city’s sewerage system.

New boss has to build on Daly’s success: Sutcliffe
Man of conviction: Dublin football boss Jim Gavin with footballer bernard brogan and hurler Danny Sutcliffe
Dublin hurler Danny Sutcliffe has lamented the fact that there is no ‘Jim Gavin there’ waiting in the wings to succeed Anthony Daly as senior manager. Gavin was an obvious replacement for football boss Pat Gilroy after 2012 having previously guided the county u-21s to two All-ireland titles. ironically, Shay boland has been strongly linked with the hurling vacancy and he managed the county’s u-21s too, having previously guided the minors to All-ireland finals in 2011 and 2012. but former All-Star Sutcliffe indicated that it is going to require a high profile, national figure who has been successful at the top level himself to improve on Daly. ‘i wish there was a Jim Gavin there who had won everything at underage level who you could give it to but i suppose there really isn’t,’ said Sutcliffe. ‘Anthony Daly has been there and won Allirelands and i think that’s something we need from the next candidate, that he has that experience. ‘That’s what you are looking for. it’s either Anthony Daly or higher. You can’t really take a step back, the work that has been put in at ground level by the county board and the work Anthony put in, you couldn’t justify going a step back after the six years that he put in.’
Dublin will keep attacking – Gavin Dublin manager Jim Gavin has held his hands up for the shock Allireland semi-final defeat to Donegal, conceding to a defensive ‘vulnerability’ as a result of their swashbuckling style of play. Gavin’s hopes of guiding Dublin to back to back All-ireland titles were dashed last month by 7/1 outsiders Donegal who outscored them in an open, attacking encounter. The Dublin management were criticised for not shoring up their defence with extra bodies when Donegal were getting on top and exploiting large gaps around the half-back line. Gavin said his core belief in attacking football hasn’t shifted as a result of the defeat or indeed the tactical, tense All-ireland final last weekend between Donegal and Kerry. but he did accept that playing such an attacking game left them exposed at times and that Donegal took full

by pAuL kEAnE advantage. Asked what he would do differently, Gavin said: “i would get a balance between defence and attack. We have a core strategy of attacking football. ‘i accept the responsibility (for the fact) that the vulnerability which that expression brings was exploited.
‘it’s about getting a balanced approach’ ‘but i certainly wouldn’t stray away from that philosophy. it’s getting the balance between defence and attack.’ He added: ‘On a personal level, i accept full responsibility for that performance. And i accept full responsibility for the philosophy and the way Dublin play their football, for the attacking style we play and sometimes
for the vulnerability that it brings and the unpredictability of it. ‘i’ve managed Dublin teams for eight years now and i’ve lost more than i’ve won. And with this particular group, the senior squad, they’ve done pretty well. ‘We look at it by competition, so if you go through the national leagues, the leinster competition and the Allireland competition, they’ve won five out of six. ‘So one result doesn’t affect my resolve or the players’ resolve. One result won’t change the core philosophy of how Dublin play football. ‘but it’s been a learning experience, that’s for sure. And it’s about trying to get that balanced approach in the future. The performance wasn’t balanced in relation to the game and we got ruthlessly punished by a very good team who exploited it. That’s for me to go away and learn from.’
Brogan waiting for the call from his country Former Footballer of the Year Bernard Brogan has issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to International rules manager Paul earley, revealing that he’d love to play again but hasn’t been asked. Brogan didn’t feature in last year’s series following Dublin’s All-Ireland triumph and spent much of the winter nursing a hip issue that required surgery.
‘i haven’t got that call yet – unfortunately’ Ireland will travel to Australia in late November for a single test and with both of the organisations keen to include their top players, Brogan might have been expected to feature. earley convened his Ireland panel for a first session in Ashbourne last weekend but while several of the Dublin players were involved, Brogan wasn’t invited despite the fact that he featured in previous series.
‘I’d love to play. If I was offered it, I’d definitely think about it,’ said Brogan. ‘obviously my circumstances have changed a bit with work and stuff, running my own company, so the time commitment is a big factor for me at the moment. ‘But, no, as I said, if you’re ever called to play for your country, you answer that call – but I haven’t got that call, unfortunately, yet.’ Brogan’s Dublin colleague, michael Darragh macauley, attended the training session but has suffered a thumb injury which will rule him out of any involvement. meanwhile, Brogan confirmed that he will definitely be back next season with Dublin. ‘me personally, I will be coming back,’ he said. ‘The first day we are training I’ll be there putting it in and giving everything. ‘There will be no taking our time this year. I am very keen to get back in and start the ball rolling again and just try to get going.’

Apparently, he isn’t shy of reminding his fellow players of his success either. I had to smile then when Matt Kuchar (right) took the wind out of five-time major winner Mickelson’s sails somewhat. ‘I think the greatest thing is when Phil throws down the ultimate gauntlet when he doesn’t have a comeback to whatever you’ve said, he just says “Well, I’ve won so many majors, suck on that”. CHELSEA swept into the last16 of the Capital One Cup thanks to a second-half winner from midfielder Oscar. Kurt Zouma’s debut goal gave Chelsea a deserved lead. However, Bolton defender Matt Mills equalised soon after, before Oscar popped up with the Blues’ crucial second. Dougie Freedman’s Championship strugglers acquitted themselves well but were on the back-foot for much of the night and were indebted to a fine performance from their goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, who managed to keep the score respectable. Andre Schurrle (pictured) seemed to be on a one-man mission early on – the midfielder had eight shots, including a superb free-kick which was acrobatically pushed onto a post by Lonergan. Frank Lampard bagged a brace as holders manchester City got the defence of their title off to a winning start at the Etihad Stadium. Lampard, who scored the equaliser in City’s 1-1 draw with his old club Chelsea on Sunday, made it three in two games as the Sky Blues breezed past Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Wednesday boss Stuart Gray, whose team had seen off Burnley in the previous round, looked the happier of the two managers as the game reached the break all-square. But, any thoughts of another cup upset were soon blown away as City tore into the Owls with a four-goal blitz at the start of the second half. Lampard led the way, poking home James milner’s cross from close range before Edin dzeko added a second six minutes later, converting Jesus navas’ fine cut-back.

The Northern Irish pair, along with Europe’s captain Paul McGinley, have been at pains to play down the affair but Mickelson has certainly made it the centre of attention once again. Mickelson, the senior member of America’s team, may have simply felt the time was right to strike back in response to con-
stant questions from reporters about unity. ‘We really have a great group of guys,’ he added. ‘We have a lot of fun together. ‘I know they [Europe] are favoured and I know what great players they are, but we are having a lot of fun together and hopefully that will bring out our best golf.’ McIlroy himself spoke to reporters earlier in the day, dismissing fears over using a new driver in practice this week, and making direct ref-
erence to Mickelson, who switched from Titleist to Callaway clubs shortly before the 2004 Ryder Cup at oakland Hills, where he only picked up one point from a possible four. ‘Phil Mickelson nearly hit me off the tees in 2004,’ said McIlroy, who was in Detroit as a spectator. ‘I was standing down the left-hand side, so I’m very aware of what he did that week. ‘Hey, look, Phil changed from one equipment
manufacturer to another. This is a driver I’ve actually been using and practising with since June. I wouldn’t be putting it in the bag if I didn’t feel it was better. ‘But I think everyone saw yesterday, it was the only driver I had out there in the bag. It’s looking likely that it’s going to be in the bag this week.’

Skipper McGinley picked Gavin’s brain on pressure Jim Gavin has revealed how he passed on advice to Ryder Cup captain Paul mcGinley about the pressures of managing teams that are strong favourites for success, writes Paul Keane. Dubliner mcGinley phoned Gavin just days after the allireland semi-final loss to Donegal seeking nuggets of wisdom ahead of Europe’s defence of the Ryder Cup, which begins at Gleneagles tomorrow.
European skipper mcGinley stated in a recent interview that he wanted to know how Gavin coped with regularly being strong favourites for success and particularly so against Donegal, a game they lost. mcGinley said that Gavin was ‘very honest’ with his response. ‘it’s a private conversation,’ said Gavin yesterday. ‘But the essence of it was dealing with the perception of being favourites
going into a game or a competition. ‘(i said) that’s just an external thing that we couldn’t control and the most important thing was to control the internal thing when trying to get a performance. ‘The most important thing was what the players thought and what the management thought and the relationship between them. That’s the nature of sport.’ mcGinley’s first love was Gaelic

football and the Ballyboden St Enda’s club man was interested in becoming an inter-county player. Gavin described mcGinley as a ‘friend’ but said he wasn’t sure if his advice had been particularly helpful or not. ‘Well, we talked about other things as well,’ said Gavin. The manager than added: ‘maybe. Sunday will tell.’
