Shop and Becks David is one of the first through door of Victoria’s shop

Posh lends her voice to the battle against Aids

Spicy scrum: Eager shoppers wait to get inside the Victoria Beckham store in Mayfair yesterday DAVID BECKHAM was among the first to put wife Victoria’s claim to the test that her new frock shop was boyfriend and husband friendly. The retired footballer, 39, fought his way through a scrum of shoppers to check out the shop in London’s Mayfair on its first day of trading yesterday. However, Posh, 40, was not around for the opening as she was

by ANDREI HARMSWORTH in New York being made a UN ambassador in the fight against Aids. The fashion designer said it was important that her self-titled store be ‘a fun and easy shopping experience for men’. She said: ‘I’m lucky because David buys me clothes sometimes and I wanted to make sure the men were going to be as looked after as

the women.’ Posh has forgone ‘ugly tills’ in favour of tablets. ‘Payment is with an iPad, we can go to the customer on whatever floor she’s on,’ she told Mail Online. Her first customers included her parents Jackie and Anthony Adams and her sister Louise.

VICTORIA BECKHAM says she feels it’s her responsibility to help fight Aids after she was appointed an official goodwill ambassador for the cause. The singer-turned-designer told the UN general assembly in New York how a mercy mission to visit sufferers in South Africa was a lifechanging experience for her. ‘I came home thinking I have a responsibility and for some reason people will listen to what I have to say,’ the 40-yearold said. ‘So I am going to speak on behalf of the incredible women and the incredible charities that are working so desperately hard in these countries. I’m going to lend my voice. ‘Children, babies, should not be born with HIV, and we can stop that, which is why I’m sitting here now.’

Gardaí urged to tell victims online about their cases A VICTIM of crime? There’s an app for that. Well, kind of. The way in which police carry out investigations could be about to get a technological upgrade – that’s if a recent proposal by a Fine Gael senator gets the thumbs up. Martin Conway, Fine Gael senator for Clare, has called on the Government and acting Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan to consider bringing in an online system called TrackMyCrime. The website would allow victims of crime to follow the status of their case. The Seanad spokesperson on justice and equality is hoping that the streamlined web service, which is already being used by some police forces in the UK, would ‘further improve the service provided by An Garda Síochana and make life easier for gardaí.’ Mr Conway said: ‘TrackMyCrime allows victims of crime to access the progress of the investigation of their crime as well as contact the officer leading the investigation. The service is offered to victims of crime alongside all of our other methods of communication

by LukE HOLOHAn with notifications via email and/or text, alerting them to a message which they can securely access at a time and in a way that suits them.’ Mr Conway explained that as major reforms within An Garda Síochana get under way, combining policing with modern technology would contribute to ‘a more transparent, accessible and responsive policing system with victims at its heart’. So far the technology has successfully been rolled out across English constabularies in London, Nottingham, Avon and Somerset and Kent. The system works by automatically updating the user on information logged by the police on their computers. Emergency 999 call handlers would also offer the service. The makers of the service say that ‘TrackMyCrime won’t replace speaking to a police officer in person... but it will give you more choice about how and when you get information from the police if you are a victim of crime.’

Bales of cocaine ‘used as furniture’ on drugs ship A PENSIONER skippered a yacht across the Atlantic Ocean that was packed with more than €125million worth of cocaine bound for the north of England, it has emerged. The 70-year-old British suspect was arrested onboard the 60ft Makayabella along with two other men, aged 35 and 28, during an overnight operation by armed Irish Navy teams which took them by surprise. All three are from West Yorkshire, where police have arrested two other men aged 45 and 47. A sixth man is being hunted. The yacht had been tracked by authorities in several countries as it left Venezuela, stopping off in Trinidad, before it was stormed by an elite Navy squad 200 nautical miles off Mizen Head – Ireland’s most southerly point – in the early hours of Tuesday. Security sources said the plot involved landing the consignment of drugs on the North Wales coast. The smugglers are believed to have planned to transfer the cocaine onto a smaller boat at sea before ferrying the illegal cargo to shore. It is understood that the seizure, one of the biggest on the seas this year, was so large that the suspects were

by ED cARTy forced to use bales of cocaine as makeshift furniture for the weekslong transatlantic voyage. Under armed guard today, the one tonne haul was offloaded from the yacht on to the docks at Haulbowline naval base in Cork harbour. Initial analysis of a sample of the drugs at the force’s forensic laboratory in Dublin confirmed it was cut cocaine, but further tests are needed to establish its purity, which will confirm the street value. British police have estimated it is worth more than £100m. During the tense late-night sea raid, two Navy teams set off from a major coastal patrol vessel the LE Niamh on smaller inflatable boats, armed with pistols and batons. Captain David Barry of the Irish Navy said: ‘We believe they had no idea we were there until we were actually on board.’ The three Britons arrested on board the vessel are being questioned at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork under drug trafficking laws.. The 70-year-old skipper is believed to be an experienced sailor.

Shots fired in ‘tiger’ raid arrest GARDAI opened fire as they intercepted a man suspected of being part of a tiger kidnap gang yesterday. Shots were fired on the Malahide Road in north Dublin after armed officers attempted to stop and search a car believed to have been used in the robbery at the post office several miles away at Bayside, Sutton. A man in his 20s was arrested and a quantity of cash recovered from the car. Two other men believed to have been involved in the abduction and robbery were described as being in their late 40s or early 50s, with Dublin accents and both were said to be of chubby build.

A MAn was shot dead and his partner injured in a ganglandstyle attack after the school run. Benny Whitehouse was targeted as he returned to his car in a residential street in Balbriggan, north Co Dublin, when a gunman fired a volley of shots through the driver’s side window. The 35-year-old was hit by several bullets. His partner suffered a wound in her upper thigh and was said to be in a stable condition in Beaumont Hospital last night. Gardai said Mr Whitehouse was shot several times in Clonard Street at about 9am and appealed for witnesses.

Fine Gael Seanad nominee quits post on iMMa board FINE Gael Seanad nominee John McNulty has stepped down from the board of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in the wake of controversy surrounding his appointment. He took up the post just two weeks ago. Mr McNulty (pictured) made the announcement last night and said his resignation is in line with IMMA rules about board members being unable to contest elections. He will continue his efforts to be elected to the Seanad, he said, and will remain a member of the IMMA. In a statement, he said: ‘I am stepping down from the IMMA board with immediate effect, in accordance with IMMA’s internal

rules, which preclude me from being a board member and contesting an election at the same time.’ Separately last night, Ireland’s European CommissionerDesignate Phil Hogan defended his threat of legal action against Independent MEP Nessa Childers. The threat related to a letter, written by Ms Childers to other MEPs, questioning Mr Hogan’s suitability for his European nomination. Mr Hogan’s spokesperson said: ‘As Nessa Childers has actively misrepresented the facts, Phil Hogan has taken the only option open to him to defend his reputation and good name.’ Ms Childers believes that she has parliamentary privilege.

New Take That songs ‘will air in just weeks’ Band’s vow as Jason Orange quits showbusiness to enjoy his millions

T

ake That fans are set to hear the group’s first new tunes minus newly departed Jason Orange within weeks. News of the release comes as the band vowed to soldier on after Orange (right) walked out to return to ‘civilian life’. But the remaining threepiece – Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald – said they have been buoyed by fans who rallied round after the shock split. They will head into the studio imminently with a release as soon as November. an insider told Guilty Pleasures: ‘The first songs could be with fans within just weeks. Fans are backing the boys to stay together.’ The only delay would be if the trio decided the songs were not up to scratch.

‘They’ve written a lot of the record already,’ the insider continued. ‘The only thing stopping a comeback without Jason is if the results in the studio don’t do justice to their musical legacy. They won’t release anything sub-standard.’ as for Orange, the 44-yearold plans to slip into showbiz obscurity. ‘Jason’s just very private. He’s made a lot of money through decent investments,’ said pals. ‘Now he only wants to enjoy a civilian life. There are no big work plans for him in the pipeline.’ Take That will miss the former backing dancer’s contribution, according to insiders. ‘Jason was very encouraging on health and keeping fit. They’ll miss that spirit,’ a band source said. ‘He was also key to the group’s quality control. He’d always speak his mind if he thought something was rubbish.’ picture: Getty

Fields of white: Jing Mei and Ye Yuan give the dress a run-out in Chengdu

Here comes the bride with her 3-MILE train IT’S a groom’s nightmare scenario – rocking nervously at the altar as his bride-to-be takes an age to arrive, giving the impression she’s going to jilt him. But for Ye Yuan, the long wait to say ‘I do’ will be part and parcel of a bizarre ceremony as his intended has commissioned a dress with the world’s longest train – a whopping three miles. Weighing in at 120lb, Jing Mei’s extravagant outfit requires 40 bridesmaids just to carry it. And when she took it to a park in Chengdu, China, for a trial run this week, the train covered an entire field and need a team of security guards to ensure it didn’t snag.

by jOEL TAyLOR Miss Jing explained: ‘It started off as a mad idea and then we thought we could actually make it happen. ‘We’re both delighted with the result and we are definitely going to contact Guinness World Records to get them to agree that this is an official record-breaking dress.’ The current record is held by Dutch designer Lichel van den Ende, who made a dress with a 1.54-mile train. Mr Ye revealed the dress cost almost €5,000 to create – nearly a year’s wages for the average Chinese worker. But he conceded: ‘It is her day, so what she says goes.’

Two parasailors crash into hotel after rope snaps by SHAROn MARRiS

Terrifying: The parachute drifts between buildings in San José, Ibiza

TWO parasailing holidaymakers were left dangling 160ft from a hotel roof when their parachute broke free. Shaung He, 21, and Zhen Tuan, 30, were being towed by a speedboat above the sea in Ibiza when a sudden wind snapped the rope. The pair, a man and a woman, could be heard screaming as they were whisked further up in the air and drifted between buildings before crashing into the nine-storey Hotel Milord in San José. Onlooker Beltran Valdes said: ‘I thought for a minute when the parachute snagged that they were going to fall down the side of the building, but it left them dangling over the edge. ‘It was still worrying because they could have fallen at any stage. ‘They also hit the building a fair whack, I can’t believe they weren’t

9/11 illness kills three firefighters in one day by cOn DOHERTy The Fire Department of New York has said three retired firefighters who worked at ground zero have died on the same day from illnesses related to the September 11, 2001, attacks. Lt howard Bischoff and firefighters robert Leaver and Daniel heglund died on Monday. Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said their deaths are ‘a painful reminder that 13 years later we continue to pay a terrible price for the department’s heroic efforts on that day’. The three worked at the World Trade Center site after the attacks. One had leukemia, one had oesophageal cancer and the third had colon cancer. The Uniformed Fire Officers Association said first responders showed health problems soon after the attacks, with 99 per cent of exposed firefighters reporting at least one new respiratory illness. The FDNY lost 343 firefighters altogether in the September 11 attacks.

IS extremists kill lawyer Militants with the islamic state (is) group have publicly killed a human rights lawyer in the iraqi city of Mosul after finding her guilty of apostasy in a selfstyled islamic court, the United nations has said. the Un assistance Mission in iraq said samira salih al-nuaimi was taken from her home on september 17 after allegedly posting messages on Facebook that were critical of the militants’ destruction of places of worship in iraq’s second largest city. the Gulf Centre for Human Rights said Ms al-nuaimi had worked on detainee rights and poverty.

the extremist is group seized Mosul in June during its rapid advance across the country’s north and west. it has since imposed a harsh version of islamic law in areas that are now under its control in iraq and syria. Ms al-nuaimi’s Facebook page appears to have been removed since her death. according to the Un assistance Mission she was tried in a sharia court for apostasy, after which she was tortured for five days before the militants – also known as isis or isil – sentenced her to public execution.

Terror alert on New York and Paris subways A TERRORIST plot to attack subways in New York and Paris has been uncovered, Iraq’s prime minister has claimed. Captured Islamic State extremists have told intelligence officials in Baghdad about plans to attack both cities. And experts on terrorism have warned that London could also be on the jihadis’ hit list – as British MPs are due to vote today on launching air strikes against extremists based in Iraq. The country’s leader, Haider Abadi, did not know if the attacks were imminent and said he had passed details of the plot to intelligence agencies in the US and Europe. He said those behind the plot were ‘not Iraqis’, but added: ‘Some of them are French, some are Americans... but they are in Iraq.’ Following the announcement, New York’s police department said it ‘was aware’ of the warning and was working with the FBI and other agencies to ‘assess the threat’. While US officials stressed they had seen no evidence to back-up Mr Abadi’s claims, one expert said Iraq had supplied

by DOMiNiC YEATMAN ‘reliable information’ about terror plots in the past. There was no immediate comment from government officials in Paris. A British Home Office spokeswoman said no decision would be made on raising the current ‘severe’ terror threat level before MPs meet this afternoon. But with Britain poised to join the military coalition against IS in Iraq, neighbouring Iran has warned that extremist violence in the Gulf is spreading like a ‘contagious disease’, which threatens the ‘destruction of civilisation’. In a speech to the UN, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hinted that Western intervention in Syria’s civil war had allowed IS to flourish. Meanwhile, the FBI director says the US believes it has identified the Britishaccented masked man in the videos depicting the beheadings of two American journalists and a British aid worker. James Comey told reporters he would not reveal the man’s name or nationality.

Humbled Cameron sorry for revealing Queen’s ‘purring’ BRITISH prime minister David Cameron is to make an unprecedented apology in person to Queen Elizabeth, after being caught privately describing her as ‘purring’ in pleasure at the result of the Scottish referendum result. A chastened Mr Cameron admitted he was ‘very embarrassed’ and ‘extremely sorry’ over the gaffe, which came as he chatted with billionaire media tycoon Michael Bloomberg in New York. Downing Street has already contacted Buckingham Palace to offer apologies and it is understood that Mr Cameron will say sorry to her in person. He was picked up by a TV microphone on Tuesday telling former New York mayor Bloomberg of the relief he

felt at not having to inform the Queen that Scotland had left the UK. ‘The definition of relief, if you are Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is ringing up Her Majesty the Queen and saying, ‘Your Majesty, it is all right, it’s okay’,’ he said. ‘That was something. She purred down the line.’ Speaking to reporters in New York, Mr Cameron was asked if he regretted the comment and whether he would apologise. He replied: ‘Yes and yes.’ He then added: ‘Look, I’m very embarrassed by this. I’m extremely sorry about it. It was a private conversation, but clearly a private conversation that I shouldn’t have had and won’t have again.’

300 refugees on stricken boat are saved

A CRUISE ship rescued more than 300 people, apparently refugees who had fled Syria, as they were stranded yesterday aboard a small boat off Cyprus. Cypriot Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou said Cyprus will host the people until authorities determine what will happen to them according to international laws and regulations. The Cypriot Defence Ministry said the 345 people, including 52 children, would be taken to a reception centre near the capital Nicosia, where they will be given shelter and medical attention. The ship docked at Limassol port. Salamis Cruise Lines Managing Director Kikis Vasiliou said that one of its cruise ships had been instructed to change course and pick up the people packed aboard the smaller vessel. The Defence Ministry said the boat issued a distress call early yesterday amid bad weather and that it had ‘most likely’ set sail from war-torn Syria

by cOn DOHERTy loaded with ‘civilian refugees’. Vasiliou said the company received the request from Cypriot Search and Rescue authorities to assist in the rescue operation yesterday morning while the cruise ship was returning to Cyprus from the Greek islands. The Defence Ministry said the small boat was stranded about 50 nautical miles off Cyprus’ southwestern coastal town of Paphos. Vasiliou said the cruise ship, with a crew of 230 and a passenger capacity of 800, would be able to give refugees blankets, medical care and food while taking them to the Cypriot port of Limassol. Thousands of migrants fleeing conflicts in the Middle East and northern Africa attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea in rickety boats in search of safe havens in Europe, and hundreds of them have tragically died at sea.

Blair recognised as gay icon for role in creating equality FoRMER British prime minister Tony Blair has been recognised as one of the top ‘gay icons’ of the past three decades, along with figures such as Boy George, Sir Ian McKellen and Barbra Streisand. He has been given the accolade by Gay Times to mark the publication’s 30th anniversary and has been featured as a cover star for an electronic version of the magazine. Mr Blair’s period in Downing Street saw the lowering of the homosexual age of consent, bringing it into line with that for straight couples, as well as the introduction of civil partnerships. Earlier this month Mr Blair was also given an award by GQ magazine as philanthropist of the year. Gay Times said of Mr Blair’s contribution to improving the lives of

Liberal: Tony Blair lowered the gay age of consent gay people: ‘Whatever the realities of his philanthropy and the backlash to his GQ award, his status as an ambassador of gay rights is undeniable. ‘An equal age of consent, the abolition of Section 28, legal recognition for trans people, civil partnerships, banning employers from sacking you because of who you love and making homophobia a hate crime – they were all on Blair’s watch.’

A NURSE in the UK dubbed ‘the Canterbury Cannibal’, who was convicted of sexual grooming after plotting to behead and eat a girl, has been jailed for nine years. American Dale Bolinger, 58, bought an axe from a DIY store in Broadstairs, Kent the day before he tried to meet the 14-year-old, whom he had groomed online. He chatted with the teenager, a Mexican girl called ‘Eva’ said to be living in Germany, on a website. In conversations, Bolinger described sex acts he wanted to perform on her and how he would murder her, which she said she wanted to happen.

After a four-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court in July, Bolinger was found guilty of attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16 following sexual grooming. Before the trial, Bolinger admitted other charges. As he was jailed today for the 11 offences, a judge said his behaviour was ‘abhorrent, shocking and dangerous’. Detective Superintendent Tim Smith, of Kent Police, said: ‘Bolinger represents a very real and great danger to the public and I welcome the news that he will spend time behind bars.’

60 seconds Mailbox brendan gleeson, 59, has won acclaim for films In Bruges, The General and Calvary. In January he’ll star with sons Brian and Domhnall in Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce. The Walworth Farce is a highoctane study of isolation and family dysfunction. What can audiences expect? Brendan: It’s

a story about a family who are living in a flat on the Walworth road [in south London]. I play the father, Dinny, who has his two sons acting out a farce which he has devised. Every day. They do nothing else... except occasionally Brian’s character goes down to the supermarket to get some props. They re-enact this farce, which is basically the story –told from the father’s perspective –of how they’ve come to leave cork and be in London.

What is it about Enda Walsh’s script that attracted you?

So what’s next for you? Brian: I’ve got a film coming out in November and it’s going to premier at the cork Film Festival. It’s called Standby, a romantic comedy directed by rob and ronan Burke. Brendan, can you tell me about The Lame Shall Enter First, the final film in John Michael McDonagh’s ‘Glorified Suicide’ trilogy? Brendan:

flow it will be something special

Do you feel the same, Brian?

Brian: I think it’ll be the same for us as it is for the audience; that we’ll be so immersed in the story we’ll forget all about it.

What’s your character like?

Brian: Seán, the guy I play, is pining for the truth and, unbeknownst to the family, looking for a way out. Like all kids, at some point, he wants to break free.

o Marc from Wicklow, I was surprised to read your comments yesterday in Metro Herald. Israel has never admitted that Hamas was not behind the killing of the three Israeli boys earlier this year, and moreover, Hamas officials have admitted the killers were associated with Hamas. It was also strange for me not to find any condemnation about the killing of these three Israeli children in your letter. I suggest that before quoting UN figures you should also check facts before writing them. The recent Israeli-Gazan war was a terrible occurrence. However, you can find out facts easily using the internet, without the need of making them up. Daniel, Dublin

I’m not sure when it was never real, but we can be certain that the science has never been so abused by the political interference with which we are being routinely bombarded lately. They warn us of rising global temperatures, though there hasn’t been any warming for nearly 18 years now. It’s time to stop the scary climate stories and say ‘no more’ to policies that make our energy sources more expensive and put those who are less well off most at risk. Eamon

Moore shines in dark satire

HOLLYWOOD’S dark side has long fascinated film-makers and this biting satire from David Cronenberg is up there with the best. Julianne Moore leads an all-star cast as Havana Segrand, a deeply insecure actress longing for a part and willing to do anything to get it. Mia Wasikowska plays the

Maps To The sTars (18) HHHH✩ mysterious, facially scarred Agatha, who gets work as Havana’s assistant, while Robert Pattinson is Jerome, the limo driver who catches the eye of both women. Like everyone else, Jerome is in Los Angeles looking for fame and fortune – this desperation for success is one of the key themes of Maps To The Stars. It is a complex, darkly funny and deceptively sunny look at Hollywood: glittering champagne-soaked parties are popu-

lated by smiling sociopaths with hearts and secrets far darker than we might imagine. There’s John Cusack’s novelist and famed healer, who gives Havana rigorous mental and physical workouts, charging by the hour for feigned concern and dubious spiritualism. His world-weary wife (Olivia Williams) has almost been broken by a past tragedy and by managing their son, troubled child star Benjie (Evan Bird). A scornful, spoiled teenager in rehab almost before puberty, Benjie is just as entertaining as he is horrifying. Maps To The Stars is a chal-

lenging and disturbing account of Hollywood. Taboos are broken along the way; Cronenberg and writer Bruce Wagner have not shied away from taking a severe view. It’s familiar territory for former ambulance driver Wagner, known for his acerbic view of Hollywood thanks to the novels Dead Stars and The Chrysanthemum Palace. The film’s an excellent showcase for its actors: the increasingly versatile Pattinson puts in a subtle performance, while Julianne Moore rightly won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her passionate turn. Fans of TV’s Outnumbered will find a familiar flavour to this family film from the creators of the series. Doug (David Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike) are mid-divorce, a fact they are keen to keep from his ailing father (Billy Connolly). You would probably be considerably better off watching Outnumbered reruns.

But this is superficial stuff – not only is the plot slight but the characters are good or bad, depending on gender and/or a passing relationship with McCall. Why should a woman who works for a gangster be protected without question and every man who does the same killed without question? There may be an argument that they’re more willing but you wouldn’t know it from the script. It may have its moments but the story is as outdated as its source material.

Murder, marriage, the media and me

Ben Affleck talks to us about his role in David Fincher’s adaptation of the smash-hit novel by Gillian Flynn – Gone Girl

When did you first become aware of Gone Girl? The book was a hot property in Hollywood. Everyone was reading it. I read it and really liked it. I thought: ‘God, this would be hard to make into a movie.’ Then I put it down and I didn’t think about it until I got a call saying: ‘David Fincher wants to meet you about Gone Girl.’ I was actually going to direct another movie but the chance to work with David Fincher was a dream come true. So I put off my other movie. Was one of the challenges playing someone who knows he’s being watched? It’s like you playing a person playing a role. Yes, I think what’s really important to this is the theme of role-playing. The way the media casts you in certain roles: ‘OK, you’re gonna be the adoring husband,’ or ‘you’re gonna be the murdering husband,’ or ‘you’re gonna be the scandalous backstabber,’ or whatever it is. We turn people into easily digestible archetypes. And when Nick doesn’t behave the way a grieving husband is supposed to behave, it really inflames people who are watching through the media.

Scrutiny: Ben affleck in Gone Girl – the actor has had his own experiences of being in the spotlight. PICTURE: AP

As well as modern media, do you think the film reflects on modern marriage? Ultimately, at its root, the book is about marriage. But, ultimately, I think the movie is about the way

really are and who they really are. You’re someone who has experience of media scrutiny. Yes, I have definitely experienced that in my own life, both in terms of

how did you create the bond and the intimacy you needed to with co-star Rosamund Pike? With David [Fincher], because you’re shooting so much, there isn’t a lot of time to sit around, chat, get to know the real you. You’re really just there to work. Also, Ros is a bit enigmatic, slightly inaccessible, which I think is good. There’s an undercurrent of alienation in the movie, so maybe this can sort of work for that. It’s easier to create warmth and smiles and do all those things that we associate with happy relationships than it is to flavour it with a few spices of indifference and resentment… if that make sense! Business&Careers O’Leary’s ‘cuddly’ crusade at Ryanair yields dividends

RyanaiR’s drive to improve its image is showing signs of paying off after it upgraded its forecast for annual passenger traffic. The Dublin-based carrier has softened its stance on baggage charges and booking conditions and introduced allocated seating and a new business service in an effort to improve its customer experience.

The CEO warned of uncertainty Ryanair’s chief executive Michael O’Leary told shareholders in Dublin that the initiatives meant the airline now expected to fly 87 million customers in the year to March 31, compared with the 86 million previously forecast. He said: ‘Our customers and our shareholders have responded favourably to our improving customer experience, our better digital platform and the positive initial uptake of our Business Plus service.’

by gRAEME EvAns Mr O’Leary also raised Ryanair’s profits guidance towards the upper end of its previously guided range of between €620million and €650million. The signs of improved demand gave a boost to shares in other carriers, with easyJet and British airways owner international airlines Group up 2 per cent. Ryanair said it also expected to benefit from the opening of new bases for the carrier in Cologne, Gdansk, Glasgow and Warsaw, as well as greater flight frequencies and schedules from Dublin to UK cities and European capitals. However, Mr O’Leary warned shareholders that there was still uncertainty over the full-year performance due to little visibility on fare yields in the October to March period. Ryanair’s post-tax profits were 8per cent lower at €523million in the year to March 31 after a price war left average fares 4 per cent lower at a time of rising fuel costs.

According to the latest statistics from the Irish Hotels Federation, the well-needed boost is due to an overall ten per cent growth in overseas visitors. Tim Fenn, chief executive of the Irish Hotels Federation, said that the increase was encouraging at a time when many hoteliers are facing uncertainty – especially related to debt overhangs.

n IRISH wine taxes have led to an 8 per cent drop in the volume of wine sold here, according to a new report. The Irish Wine Association released its Annual Wine Market Review 2013 yesterday and called for a reversal of last year’s

GiLLiAn FREnCH, 37, is the chief people officer at CarTrawler, the online car rental service that is currently looking for new faces around the office. She talks to Aileen Donegan about her growing business Gillian, you started at CarTrawler in 2007, what attracted you to the company?

I was drawn to CarTrawler by the people and the technology. It’s a fast-paced, dynamic company and everyone’s bursting with energy and ideas.

2. What’s the most important aspect of being a chief people officer? My role is to embed our

company values and instil a passion in everything we do. We have a strong culture of empowering people so they have a real impact in driving the business forward.

3. Tell us about CarTrawler now? We’re a leading international

technology company based in Dublin with offices in London and Boston. Our technology platform handles eight million car rental customer interactions every day and we provide car rental solutions to over 1,200 travel companies around the world. We currently employ 220 brilliant people and our staff canteen is buzzing with new faces almost every day. We have 24 different nationalities working in CarTrawler and there’s a 50:50 gender balance. We’re also committed to nurturing career progression and have promoted a quarter of our employees within the last 12 months.

4. What would you say to a young person starting their career and looking to join your team? I’d advise them to grab

every opportunity that comes their way and to make the most of windows of opportunity that present themselves. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Also, don’t forget to have fun – life is too short to be serious all the time!

Grief at work In June of this year I worked with an impressive man with an even more impressive track record of success in his career. He came to me seeking a job move saying his current organisation was incompatible with his needs and values. When I dug a little deeper, what transpired was he had recently lost his beloved mother. At the time he took three days’ bereavement leave and returned to work to find a form to be filled out for HR to give the go-ahead and legitimise this leave and ultimately decide whether to pay him or not. Welcome back, he thought. We know that ‘compassionate leave’ is special leave given to an employee on the death of a spouse, child or a member of their immediate family. But did

5. What kind of people are you looking for in the new roles you’re offering? We’re

looking for passionate and intellectually curious people for a range of roles right across the business – including customer operations, digital marketing, data science, business development, engineering and web design. For us, it’s about cultural fit and attitude, not just academic credentials.

6. How did CarTrawler begin and how did you capitalise on your niche in the market?

Back in 2004, it had become apparent that online car rental was lagging behind other travel sectors such as air transportation and hotels. CarTrawler identified this niche and built a technology platform enabling online travel businesses to access global car rental content and make it available to their customers in a seamless and cost effective manner.

7. Favourite thing about your job? I love the variety of my job.

There’s never a dull moment. It’s important to get out of your comfort zone from time to time, as it means you’re learning and developing!

8. What’s your background? Have you always wanted to be in human resources and support? I actually started my

career in the hotel business as a parttime waitress and finished up being deputy general manager in Jury’s Hotel Group. In 2006, I was presented with an opportunity to start in CarTrawler as director of operations. That role gave me a thorough understanding of the business and it was during this time that I became

really interested in the HR side of things. I kind of gravitated towards it as I’ve a real interest in people. When the opportunity arose for me to move departments, I grabbed it with both hands.

is no average day in my role! Let’s just say I have an office that I rarely see as I’m constantly out and about meeting people from different parts of the business and leading crossfunctional projects. TV pundits go too far, claims ref

Cody keeps emotions in check ahead of Tipp test It wIll cause no offence to Brian Cody to point out that he has been ultra conservative with his comments about tipperary in recent weeks. In fact, in his 15 years of managing Kilkenny, he has rarely appeared so wary of the media, withholding players from any interviews ahead of tomorrow’s All-Ireland Final replay and saying precious little himself. Pressed for his emotion immediately after the drawn game earlier this month, he said he had none. None whatsoever. Several days later, he still had none. ‘Since then I have no feelings,’ he reported.

‘An ugly win will do just fine tomorrow’ Even by Cody’s measured standards, however, one can probably cut him some slack when he talks about there being millimetres between Kilkenny and tipperary. technically, there hasn’t even been that much between them in this year’s

by pAuL kEAnE Championship, the two sides shooting exactly 180 each in six games. And, of course, when they faced off against each other, they drew. ‘we played tipperary in the league final this year and after 70 minutes it was a draw,’ said Cody. ‘we played an All-Ireland Final this year and after 70 minutes it was a draw. there’s nothing between Kilkenny and tipperary from a statistics point of view or actual contests between us. ‘Do I know that they could beat us on a given day? I’m positively certain they could. But I’m certain we could beat them too. there’s that little between both teams.’ the drawn game was a classic contest with some suggesting it was the best ever final. Cody said an ugly win tomorrow will do him just fine. ‘Everybody talks about the quality of the last game and, yeah, it was top notch, superb but it could be completely different this time,’ he said. ‘Just because it was free flowing,

I have no idea how it’s going to go or what sort of a game it will be. I’m not especially bothered. I just know it’s going to take a huge effort from both teams and that’s what we’re concentrating on giving.’

All-IrelAnd hurling final replay referee Brian Gavin claims that pundits are ‘overdoing’ their analysis and criticism of match officials. Offaly man Gavin will take charge of tomorrow evening’s replay. He claimed that Barry Kelly, who refereed the drawn game, had been subjected to unwarranted criticism afterwards. He was particularly critical of rTÉ’s Sunday Game show, which didn’t carry interviews from the team hotels, as it normally would, because the game had ended in a draw. ‘It’s disappointing the way they scrutinise the All-Ireland final,’ said Gavin on local radio yesterday. ‘Just because they had no banquet for the teams, they decide to fill the programme scrutinising Barry Kelly’s performance and they did the same with me last year after the drawn game with Clare and Cork.’ He added: ‘I just think they’re overdoing it, we’re under enough pressure.’

O’Shea keeps faith with his team eAmOn O’SHeA has given a ringing endorsement of his Tipperary team by sending the very same side back into battle tomorrow evening. While Brian Cody has changed a fifth of his Kilkenny team and made various positional switches, O’Shea is happy that he has got the mix just right and named the exact same line-up. Fans are hoping for more of the same after a thrilling tussle when the sides drew 3-22 to 1-28 just under three weeks ago. But while last year’s final replay between Cork and Clare lived up to its billing, O’Shea has said that tomorrow’s rematch could just as easily turn out to be a damp squib in terms of entertainment. ‘In economic terms there is a term called ceteris paribus, where everything is held constant,’ said university professor O’Shea. ‘But nothing stays constant in this game. everything changes. every game is going to be different.

Webb’s text begged Tom for selection

Webb SimpSon yesterday admitted he pleaded with Tom Watson to be given a place on the Ryder Cup team. The US captain was criticised for overlooking form players such as Chris Kirk and billy Horschel when he named Simpson (pictured) as one of his three wild cards for Gleneagles. Watson only plumped for Simpson on the day his wild cards were announced, claiming this was mainly down to his performances at the 2012 Ryder Cup. And Simpson has now revealed that he personally spoke to Watson in the early hours of the morning to state his case for inclusion. The 29-year-old said: ‘He called me at 4.30 in the morning Denver time, and he knew i wasn’t sleeping because i had texted him. ‘i basically expressed everything i could to let him know how bad i wanted to be on the team. ‘i tried to acknowledge that it was a tough decision for him. but i made my final plea, i told him, “i want revenge on what happened in 2012 and i really, really want to be on that team”.’

Rory’s handed an early chance to silence Mickelson by Nick METcALfE at Gleneagles SoME events in sport don’t need over hyping, they simply sell themselves. The Ryder Cup is one of them. That said, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy going head-to-head at Glen-eagles this morning will set pulses racing for sports fans around the world. Mickelson produced easily the most damning barb of the build-up here when he made his already infamous ‘litigate’ jibe against Northern Irish pair McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. Now, on the first morning of the contest, they get to take it out on the course. At 8.20am, Mickelson (inset) and Keegan Bradley will tee it up against McIlroy and Sergio Garcia. If McIlroy was fired up by the American’s comment, he has not had to wait long to exact some revenge and it promises to be a truly thrilling fourball encounter. That match is only one instalment of a fascinating opening morning. First up are Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson against Americans Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, followed by Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer against Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker. His bone is bruised a lot and we have to wait and see, to evaluate it. ‘Smalling yesterday ran out of the training session because he had stiff legs. We have to see what that means. but i don’t take risks with players.’ With six more injuries in other positions, van Gaal has something of a crisis on his hands. He added: ‘i have to admit i have never been in this situation before [with injuries]. it is strange. ‘At this moment it is maybe yes [my toughest job]. This is a big challenge. This club is in a transition.’

gleneagles diary Charlie’s sends fighting message to Ryder players THE opening ceremony was grand, but i really loved the preshow. Host Dougie Donnelly brought back memories of watching snooker, bowls and curling while Commonwealth Games gold-medal winning boxer Charlie Flynn got the biggest laugh with a message of inspiration: ‘Europe get your game face on, let’s do this.’

‘Litigate’ jibe is just taking the Mick, claims Poulter Ian Poulter has laughed off Phil Mickelson’s ‘litigate’ jibe against rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, insisting the northern Irish pair remain great friends. the american, referring to an ongoing legal battle involving McIlroy’s former and McDowell’s current management team, had said: ‘not only are we able to play together, we also don’t litigate against each other and that’s a plus.’ However, Poulter (right) brushed aside the comments saying: ‘I did see them but you need to see how rory and G-Mac are

Greens turn Red in golden-oldie fun ThERE were plenty of laughs yesterday during a special celebrity match involving a number of former sporting stars. Mainly former Liverpool players actually, with Kenny Dalglish (pictured), Alan hansen and Jamie Redknapp all in action. Former Scotland rugby great Gavin hastings, clearly nervous, joked he’d love to say what he was feeling, but live TV coverage prevented that. In the end, hansen and Corey Pavin beat Colin Montgomerie and hastings 4&2, while Ian Woosnam and Dalglish saw off Redknapp and Mark James 3&1.

Ryding high... Players and coaches in tribute to Seve by SAM COSTELLO EuropE’s ryder Cup team have again paid tribute to the late seve Ballesteros ahead of this year’s contest at Gleneagles. Ballesteros, Europe’s talisman in the event for so long and then captain in his native spain in 1997, died in May 2011 after a long battle with a brain tumour. His partner during most of his cup career was Jose Maria olazabal, who was the captain in Medinah two years ago when the team had the image of Ballesteros on their bags and his silhouette on their shirts. They also wore the blue and white colours favoured by the

Legend: Seve not forgotten five-time major winner on the final day in Chicago, when they recovered from 10-6 down to win for the seventh time in the last nine contests. During the final practise round at Gleneagles yesterday the home side’s players had the silhouette of Ballesteros on the sleeve of their

team jumpers. And earlier this week, Thomas Bjorn said the late spaniard’s presence is still felt. ‘seve lives with us. He lives with the ryder Cup more than anything, but he lives with us as a team. He’s a huge inspiration to this team and he always will be,’ Bjorn said. ‘For us as a tour and as players, he is the most inspirational guy that’s ever been, and fortunately I was lucky enough to play with him and be around him when he played. You couldn’t have a man that stood for more of what European golf is all about. He will live with us forever.’

Cody rings the changes but still no place for either Shefflin or Walsh BRian COdy has overhauled his Kilkenny team for tomorrow’s all-ireland hurling final replay – but resisted the temptation to start either Henry Shefflin or Tommy Walsh. Speculation was rife that Shefflin would start against Tipperary, while various hurling pundits had championed Tommy Walsh’s cause. But boss Cody has opted for change elsewhere in the team, with John Power, Padraig Walsh and Kieran Joyce coming in instead.

Walter Walsh’s axing is no surprise after a poor showing in the drawn game and he is replaced by Power.

‘Would I have feelings for the player? Definitely’ Padraig Walsh, younger brother of Tommy, comes in for Joey Holden but the major talking point is Joyce’s inclusion at Brian Hogan’s expense.

Former all-ireland winning captain Hogan played the entire game just under three weeks ago when the sides drew. There are various positional switches too, with TJ Reid moved to the full-forward position, although he played in the fullforward line on September 7 anyhow. ironically, Cody spoke ahead of his team selection about how difficult it is to drop or take off under-performing players. ‘you’d certainly be disappointed for the player, obviously broken-hearted, to put it

mildly, you’d be feeling like that, yeah,’ said Cody. ‘Would i have feelings for the fella? Most definitely. you’d talk to him. But it’s an instinct, what you do.’ Opponents Tipperary have named an unchanged team with no positional switches. it means that Michael Cahill and former all-ireland winning captain Eoin Kelly will have to be content with bench roles again.
