Bride and groom climb 2,300ft rocky mountain to exchange their wedding vows

Newlyweds say ‘high do’

High romance: Jamie and David Lamb stand at the peak of The Chief after scaling to the summit to get married. Jamie wore a specially made dress for the gruelling climb

by RicHARD AsHMORE THEY’VE only just tied the knot but Jamie and David Lamb’s marriage is rock solid. The adventurous pair exchanged their vows after scaling a 2,300ft mountain, with Jamie tackling the gruelling peak in a dress that was specially made to handle the feat. They decided to climb the rock formation, known as The Chief, after being inspired by friends who staged a fake climbing wedding video. Dietician Jamie, 29, said: ‘I have never wanted a wedding. ‘Even as a young girl, it just sounded expensive and more of a pain than anything else.’ However, she changed her mind after seeing the video for a friend’s company, Beyond Adventures, which specialises in adventure weddings. ‘When I saw it for the first time I cried – I loved it so much, it was

big blow-out event but, as we started planning for that, he realised how much stress and money went into it,’ Jamie added. ‘He decided to go with the climbing

wedding and it all spiralled from there.’ The Canadian couple spent about €9,000 on their big day, which included buying Jamie’s hardy dress for the enormous peak in Squamish, British Columbia. Jamie said they have been overwhelmed by the response to their unique dream day on July 22. ‘We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to our wedding,’ she added. ‘Everyone says if they could do it

over, they would have done it the way we did it. What we really wanted was to enjoy a day without all of the other drama that comes with weddings. ‘An enormous amount of people have said that our video made them cry and the wild part is that people who have never even met us have said that it made them cry. ‘It really touches us to know that other people could feel the emotion and love that was present on that day, and every day, in our lives.’

Firms urged to sign up for job-creation charter COMPANIES have been urged to sign up to the new Employment and Youth Activation Charter, launched by Tánaiste Joan Burton. It provides companies with ‘a clear roadmap’ for how they can help tackle youth and longterm unemployment, chief executive of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce Gina Quin said last night. Employers who sign the charter commit to considering at least 50 per cent of candidates for interview from the Live Register. They will also implement measures to prepare those who are out of work to take up jobs. Launching the document yesterday, Ms Burton said the charter was a ‘vital initiative’.

Ageism at work as bosses favour young SOME 70 per cent of employers would prefer to hire a young person over a mature jobseeker if they had the chance, according to a report published today. Employment monitor CPL found that while jobs continue to grow, most employers would offer a job to those in their 20s for jobs that require up to three to five years’ experience. While up to 80 per cent of employers said they had high expectations of recruiting in the next 12 months, one-third of employers had used initiatives like JobBridge to hire staff. CPL director Peter Cosgrove commented: ‘Ageism is a prevailing obstacle for the more mature job seekers.’

Cork cocaine smuggling suspect hands himself in A SIXTH suspect being hunted by investigators probing the alleged plot to smuggle €80million of cocaine across the Atlantic in a yacht has handed himself in. The 29-year-old from Leeds, wanted for questioning about the tonne of narcotics on board the Makayabella off the Cork coast last week, walked into a police station in Yorkshire on Sunday night. Meanwhile, four British men have already been charged along with three men detained on board the vessel by the Irish Navy last Tuesday.

One curious walker said: ‘The contrast is stunning, to my eye anyway. What was once one of the most beautiful views in Dublin, especially on sunny summer evenings, has been utterly destroyed in the last 16 days. Why?’ Well now we have an answer to the case of the missing trees and it seems to centre on safety concerns. A spokesperson for the Office of Public Works, the

They titled a story about intestinal gas ‘Nitric Oxide and inflammation: The answer is blowing in the wind’, explaining: ‘We both really liked Bob Dylan and we thought the quotes really fitted nicely with what we were trying to achieve with the title.’

They also used ‘The times they a-changing’ for a headline despite the possible effect on their credibility. Weitzberg added: ‘We’re not talking about scientific papers – we could have got in trouble for that – but rather articles we have written about research by others, editorials and things like that.’ The men were later joined by three others and the winner of the bet will get lunch at a restaurant.

Apple and State deny ‘tax deal’

Ireland has denied striking a secret tax deal with technology giant apple that would have allegedly broken eU rules on state aid. The Government has moved to counter claims that a ‘back room’ agreement was struck with the world’s richest company dating back two decades. The department of Finance said an ongoing investigation in Brussels into state aid to mutinationals – including the iPhone maker – has yet to reach any final conclusions.

‘Ireland is confident that there is no breach of state aid rules in this case and has already issued a formal response to the (european) Commission earlier this month, addressing in detail the concerns and some misun-

derstandings contained in the opening decision,’ a spokesman said. ‘Ireland welcomed that opportunity to clarify important issues about the applicable tax law in this case and to explain that the company concerned did not receive selective treatment and was taxed fully in accordance with the law.’ The Financial Times reported apple is to be accused of prospering from illegal tax deals with Ireland as part of the inquiry which could lead to record fines of several billion euro. ‘There’s never been any special deal, there’s never been anything that would be construed as state aid,’ luca Maestri, apple’s chief financial officer, said in an interview with the paper. later this week, Brussels is expected to publish a formal letter sent to the Irish authorities in June.

MAKING alcohol cheaper would only cost us in other ways, a drink awareness group has warned. If the alcohol industry’s campaign for lower excise duty is successful, Alcohol Action Ireland has said, the public purse will be hit by health costs. CEO Suzanne Costello said: ‘The alcohol industry’s concerted campaign for a cut in excise duty is seeking to focus everyone’s attention on its economic contribution while encouraging them to ignore the significant harm caused by its products to the people of Ireland. ‘The objective of the alcohol industry is to maximise its profits through the sale of its products. However, the Government has a responsibility to prioritise the health of the Irish people.’ Alcohol Action Ireland pointed out that a reduction in excise duty will also fail to close the gap between prices in the on-trade and the offtrade and can only serve to increase overall consumption.

I’ve heard a number of accounts, over the years, of people coming to harm as a result of ‘dabbling’ in the occult and using ouija boards. While I’d like to think there’s no power in such things, the evidence indicates that actually, there is power and it’s not good power – quite the contrary. No future for robot carers?

6 dead in road hole disaster

MOST people in Ireland believe technological advances in the home would enhance their lives, but more than half couldn’t justify using a robot to care for a loved one. In Eircom’s Household Sentiment Survey, measuring digital habits in the future, some 18 per cent said they would use robots to be the primary carer for the sick and elderly in their house. While some 46 per cent approved of wearable tech devices, the smartphone proved to be the tech the Irish couldn’t live a day without.

Car wreckage is seen in a sinkhole thatt appeared in appe a road in Simferopol, Crimea. Six people died and two children were injured in the accident on a highway near the city when a car drove into the hole, which had been formed by a landslide. ‘Death by misadventure’ as tragic mother’s inquest ends A FIRST-TIME mother who died a week after an emergency Caesarean section died due to medical misadventure, an inquest jury has found. Dhara Kivlehan, 29 and originally from India, died in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital on September 28 2010 after being airlifted from Sligo Hospital, where she had given birth a week earlier and suffered a severe form of pre-eclampsia. The five day hearing at Carrick-onShannon courthouse in Co Leitrim heard that deficiencies in her care included a 96-hour delay in a kidney

by ED CARTy specialist assessing her critical condition and a 12-hour gap in the first set of blood tests being reviewed. Yesterday was the fourth anniversary of Mrs Kivlehan’s death and a week since her son Dior turned four. The young mother died on the fifth anniversary of her marriage to Michael Kivlehan in India. Widower and full-time father Michael said: ‘We had no answers up to now. Even though it came to litigation we weren’t allowed answers in our day in

court, to get the feel for where things went wrong. ‘We knew the answers as to how Dhara died and we had the best medical experts in the world and in the inquest they have more or less said the same thing. We have clarity now but in a curtailed fashion.’ The HSE had apologised on behalf of Sligo hospital at a civil case in the High Court last year, where Mr Kivlehan and baby Dior were awarded almost €1million in damages. It reiterated that apology following the conclusion of the inquest.

fortunes were more likely to sign the Giving Pledge and that philanthropy is impact-driven, with the donors stating what changes they want to achieve and displaying a ‘businesslike approach’. The research team concluded that in order for fundraisers to maximise their effectiveness, they should target people with newly acquired fortunes and develop a detailed business plan, clearly stating the objectives and the means to achieve these. By May 2014, the Giving Pledge had 127 families from 12 different countries signed up.

IT WILL be no revelation to anyone who bought an apartment or ‘starter home’ during the boom in the hope of trading up that families are outgrowing their dwellings, according to a survey. A report from Aviva Home Insurance found 35 per cent of families in Leinster feel they have outgrown their current home, with 28 per cent admitting to delaying having another child due to lack of space. Of those who felt their current residence was too small, only 15 per cent said they could afford to upgrade to a bigger one.

THE Simpsons fans reacted in fury when the much-hyped killing off of a ‘major’ supporting character turned out to be... the death of Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, aka Krusty’s dad.

Beyoncé gave a bit too much away at ny’s Global citizen Festival on Saturday. The singer, 33, burst out of her shirt – exposing a flesh-coloured bra.

KATY PERRY either really likes Diplo’s music or is again dating the DJ. The singer, 29, was seen partying in the VIP section for his Surrender Nightclub set, Las Vegas.

FAnS of Queen and Adam Lambert, rejoice – the winning combo will play gigs next year. ‘Adam has this amazing range,’ said drummer Roger Taylor.

HEIDI KLUM went for a family joy ride at the weekend when she hopped into a toy car at Disneyland. The 41-year-old looked relaxed as daughter Leni, aged 10, took the wheel at the Los Angeles park on Sunday. Also along for the ride were son Johan, seven, and Klum’s toyboy lover Vito Schnabel, 28, who followed in another car.

NIALL HORAN has hinted that his own romantic troubles inspired One Direction’s new single. The Irishman – who is said to carry a torch for an ex from his home town – said Steal My Girl was about trying to hold on to a teen sweetheart. He told us: ‘You’re writing about a girl that you’ve known since you were very young. You have so much in common and everyone is trying to steal her because she’s that nice.’ Down-to-earth Niall may still dream of what might have been if he had stayed in Mullingar, instead of finding fame and fortune with 1D. But the blond singer insisted that – despite recent rumours of a split – there is no chance that he or any of his bandmates will emulate Take That’s Jason Orange by walking away.

It’s making a big difference as it was kind of lost without him.’

‘We’re obviously very young in our careers,’ he said. ‘There are some days where I wish I could just sit on my own and have a bit of my own time – but you just chill out for a day without being bothered.’ The 21-year-old added that the excitement of performing to 60,000 screaming fans a night would never wear off. ‘We’re all still in a shock about everything that goes on really,’ he said. ‘Not a lot of people get to do

Volcano death toll up to 36 jApAN: Five more bodies have been found at the summit of an active volcano, bringing the death toll to 36. They were found near a shrine on Mount Ontake where other victims have been discovered. The 10,000ft mountain, popular with hikers, erupted on Saturday, filling the air with ash and debris.

Historic first for far right FRANCE: The Front National was basking in another ‘historic victory’ yesterday after gaining its first two seats in the senate. As François Hollande’s Socialists suffered a humiliating defeat, Stéphane Ravier, 45, and David Rachline (pictured), 26, were voted in for the far-right party.

‘Yes means yes’ bill passed AMERICA: California has become the first state to use ‘yes means yes’ for investigating sex attack cases at colleges. The bill, signed into law yesterday, requires ‘affirmative, conscious, voluntary agreement’. It means a person who is drunk, drugged, unconscious or asleep cannot consent to sexual activity.

Karadžić is ‘bragging liar’

HOLLAND: Prosecutors in the genocide trial of Radovan Karadžić (pictured) yesterday labelled him a liar who bragged about ethnic cleansing. In his closing remarks at The Hague, Alan Tieger said the former Bosnian Serb leader’s denials of any part in atrocities lacked credibility.

THOUSANDS of democracy demonstrators took part in a vigil of lights last night to defy the Chinese authorities in Hong Kong. They also waved mobile phones, sang and danced as riot police stayed away from the central Admiralty district. More than 40 people have been injured over the last four days, including police officers, and there have been dozens of arrests. The riot police withdrew at lunchtime yesterday but protesters say they will return and the battles will intensify. An estimated 80,000 people have thronged the streets since the demonstrations escalated on Friday night. Student Nicola Cheung, 18, said: ‘Yes, it’s going to get violent again because the Hong Kong government isn’t going

They also want the freedom to nominate election candidates, but China will not go that far. Beijing refuses to back down and a foreign ministry spokeswoman said: ‘Hong Kong is China’s Hong Kong.’ China rules Hong Kong under a ‘one country, two systems’ formula that accords the territory limited democracy.

A ‘TWITTER troll’ has been jailed for 18 weeks for bombarding a Labour MP in Britain with abusive messages after she supported a successful campaign to put Jane Austen on the £10 note. Peter Nunn, 33, from Bristol, retweeted ‘menacing’ posts threatening to rape Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy and branding her a ‘witch’. He launched his ‘campaign of hatred’ last summer after the UK Labour politician backed a highprofile bid launched by feminist Caroline Criado-Perez to keep a woman on a British banknote. District Judge Elizabeth Roscoe found him guilty at City of London Magistrates’ Court of sending indecent, obscene or menacing messages and jailed him. She also imposed a restraining order banning him from any contact with either woman. Father-of-one Nunn showed no emotion as the sentence was passed. Victim impact statements had been read out to the court on behalf of both women, who spoke of the ‘terrifying’ threats that were made against them.

military intelligence, it is now clear that around half those killed were Hamas fighters, despite Hamas doing its best to use women and children as human shields. Marc sarcastically equates Hamas with Israel and expects to be called anti-semitic for saying so. However, Israel is a democracy based on the rule of law while Hamas is a corrupt, murdering terrorist organisation with a mediaeval Islamist mentality just like Isil. Israel did not immediately react to the murder (for which Hamas took responsibility) of three of its teenagers in June with a military campaign against Hamas-controlled Gaza. It was Hamas which instigated rocket attacks first, and only after a long period of restraint did Israel then reply in self-defence. also, the stats quoted for casualties during Operation Protective Edge are false; the UN acquired those from Hamas, which rules Gaza and keeps a tight leash on information from there. Hamas has a long record of falsification and propaganda; during the recent war, for example, Western media were only allowed to film urban destruction and hurt civilians, never Hamas fighters or their rocket attacks. Take it sloe C

hances are you’ll have sipped sloe gin at christmas. But sloes, or blackthorn berries, are actually a wild autumn fruit – and thanks to a mild spring followed by the downpours of rain in august, a bumper harvest of sloes is appearing more than a month earlier than usual. The rain has caused the plant to think that frost is on the way and start producing fruit early. The same thing happens to other hedgerow fruits, including blackberries, haws, rosehips and even grapes, making 2014 a vintage harvest year (see box). Foragers love sloes, which are part of the same family as plums, cherries and peaches but look like a small damson and taste very tart. add enough sugar, though, and they become spicy, plummy and complex in flavour, which makes them delicious in desserts, drinks and even for tarting up savoury dishes such as venison and duck. Blackthorn bushes are often used to form a traditional ‘brambly hedge’ because of their spiny, dense branches, and are a common sight along country lanes and hedgerows, around fields and on scrubby land in towns. The fruits, just over a centimetre in size, are a dark, purply-black bruise colour and grow in clusters at the ends of the spiky branches. Thanks to the early bumper bounty, sloes have ripened already, so instead of waiting until after the first frosts in October or november to pick them, you can do so now. You’ll know they are ripe if they are soft to touch. and the riper they are, the sweeter they

Rosehips

You’ll find these orangey-red fruits, which are potent in vitamin C, from late summer onwards, both on roses in your garden and wild, rambling ones in hedgerows. Turn them into syrup, herbal tea, jam and jellies, or rosehip soup – which is a popular dish in Sweden.

Blackberries

Wherever there is a patch of neglected land or a hedgerow, you’ll find brambles laden with ripe and juicy berries. You might be a little late in the season now but if you’re lucky you still get a decent haul - and children will love taking a tub out to forage with you.

Cobnuts

A variety of hazelnut, cobnuts are common in the west of Ireland, where they grow wild in woods on hazel trees. Young, green cobnuts have a taste like coconut, while ripe, golden ones are sweet like hazelnuts. You’ll probably also find cob and hazelnuts in parks… if the squirrels don’t get there first.

Mushrooms Unless you know what you’re picking, or are with an expert (they don’t call John Wright ‘John Mushroom’ for nothing), don’t go picking random mushrooms. But armed with a guidebook, you’ll find them popping up in woodland and grassland from now throughout autumn.

Step forward the Nutribullet, a new extractor that uses a super‑powerful motor to pulverize your fruit and veggies in minutes – and that includes any stems, seeds and tough skins, so every single last drop of nutrition is blasted into your drink with nothing left behind. It’s sort of a hybrid juicer‑cum‑ blender and it’s the fast‑track, fuss‑free route to getting your five‑a‑day (at the very least). The Nutribullet costs €109 from argos.ie. VERDICT: Incredibly easy to use and small enough to stay on the worktop. You can drink your smoothie/ juice blend straight from the cup too.

There’s nothing better than smothering your toast with a thick layer of salted butter – on the flip side, there’s nothing worse than trying to spread the rock‑hard yellow stuff straight from the fridge, ruining your breakfast as you go. This is where the SpreadTHAT! knife comes to the rescue. The first self‑warming butter knife not to use electricity, this clever product is made from titanium, which transmits heat from your hand to the blade. It makes slicing through chilled spreads child’s play. It costs €25, from thatinventions.com. VERDICT: Not cheap for a butter knife but everyone will want to give it a go.

3. PURIFRY

Fried food has – mercifully – come a long way since the era of the chip pan and the Purifry (€149, harveynorman.ie) is one of the new breed of ‘healthy fryers’. It uses hot air to cook with not a drop of oil in sight – so no more greasy cooking smells wafting around the kitchen. Admittedly, you’re not going to knock up cordon bleu dishes, but it’ll make speedy family food a little healthier. And its curvaceous, glossy exterior doesn’t look bad either… VERDICT: Makes great chips without oil but if you like them crispy you will need a little fat.

A Korea break from the norm One of my favourite holiday memories involved a clam barbecue on a sandy beach. Afterwards, I floated in the sea on a pink lilo. The destination in question wasn’t Ibiza or Goa, but north Korea. After lunch, I visited the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region on the east coast, walking up flower-fringed mountain trails and around turquoise lakes. Most people know that north Korea appears as a black hole on satellite images. That lack of light pollution makes for a beautiful night sky, and several nights were spent sitting on hotel rooftops picking out constellations. People scoff when I tell them north Korea was one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited and some criticised my decision to travel there on the basis that I was, Offbeat: Tamara and her somehow, propping up the regime. North Korean guide However, tourism to the most controversial of destinations rarely

Do you know what your air carrier should do for you if your flight is delayed or cancelled?

Do you know if your tour operator or travel agent is licensed and bonded?

North Korea, Iraq and Liberia should all be on your travel bucket list, says Tamara Hinson brings in huge amounts of cash, often because the countries in question make their money in other more dubious ways – in north Korea’s case, the main sources of income are thought to include activities such as the counterfeiting of dollar bills, production of methamphetamine and international insurance fraud. I’m under no illusions about the country’s human rights abuses. I’m aware that the reason I didn’t see starving children or electrified fences is because I wasn’t allowed to stray from a very well-defined route. But I also think that to deny north Korea’s potential as a tourism destination would be foolish. In places such as north Korea, Iraq, Liberia and Syria, tourism is crucial to the recovery process. It can provide people with an income and generate business.

Clarke rift ‘will not influence McGinley’ Paul McGinley insists his relationship with Darren clarke will not influence his opinion on who should be europe’s next Ryder cup captain. clarke is odds-on favourite to lead the side in 2016, when europe will be looking to claim their fourth straight victory and ninth in the last 11 contests. The former Open champion sent McGinley a letter in 2011 offering his support for the latter’s bid to become captain in 2014, but later changed his mind and put himself forward. and when Tom Watson was named uS captain in 2012, clarke suggested 2010 captain colin Montgomerie should also be considered as ‘whoever it is standing on that stage opposite Tom Watson needs a huge presence’. With the public backing of Rory Mcilroy, luke Donald and ian Poulter, McGinley subsequently won the day but admitted recently that his conver-

‘I don’t think I’d be a vice-captain again’ sations with clarke were now ‘short and sweet’ and amounted to little more than passing pleasantries. However, the 47-year-old vowed to be professional with the new selection process. Since 1999, the captain was selected by the european Tour’s 15-strong tournament committee, but changes announced in august last year mean the responsibility now falls to the previous three captains (McGinley, Jose Maria Olazabal and Montgomerie), the Tour’s chief executive and a tournament committee representative. asked if his relationship with clarke would be a problem, McGinley said: ‘absolutely no problem whatsoever.

Darren has been a vicecaptain along with many other guys. We will see where that all evolves and i’ll make a professional decision based on the views of people that i respect.’ as to whether he would be a vicecaptain, McGinley added: ‘i don’t think i’d be vice-captain to anybody going forward to be honest. i’m very happy to help in an unofficial capacity but i don’t think i have the personality to go back in as vice-captain. ‘i would like to be able to support the new captain in whatever direction he went, and if i had a belief about a different area, there would be a conflict.’ McGinley’s Ryder cup career has seen three wins as a player (2002, 2004 and 2006), two as a vice-captain (2010 and 2012) and one as captain. ‘That’s six i have been involved in and six wins. like a heavyweight fighter, i will retire undefeated. ‘i would certainly like to play a role, if required, a little bit like alex Ferguson did this week for me. i bounced ideas off him. Only William can prevent a blues Carv up DIEGO COSTA may be ‘hardly training’ according to boss Jose Mourinho, but Saturday’s goal against Aston Villa was the striker’s eighth of the season. With Arsenal visiting on Sunday, Mourinho must have considered giving Costa’s troublesome hamstrings a rest, but insisted last night he’s fine to start. The fact veteran Didier Drogba has not travelled only heightens the feeling his return to the Bridge is more

sentimental than helpful. But with Costa trying to get on the end of Cesc Fabregas’ through-balls, Chelsea should take three points off last season’s Primeira Liga runners-up. Key to knocking the Blues out of their stride is William Carvalho. The Angola-born defensive midfielder was linked with Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in the summer, as you would expect for a hybrid of Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira.

Van Gaal set to go places with utd

MANCHESTER United insist boss Louis van Gaal would have no issue with the club arranging overseas friendlies to fill the void left by their absence from European football this season. United’s early exit from the Capital One Cup means they have just one midweek match before the turn of the year and managing director Richard Arnold said going abroad to play lucrative midweek friendly matches was ‘something we continue to look at’. Van Gaal (pictured) began his Old Trafford reign in July by questioning the club’s

premier league

obligations to sponsors, claiming travelling long distances was ‘not very positive for a good preparation’. However, Arnold claims there is no conflict, saying: ‘Louis understands what is required to get a first-class team onto the pitch and also what is required for running a club of our magnitude.’ The 20-time English champions have forecast a ten per cent drop in revenue in 2014-15 after failing to qualify for the Champions League under David Moyes.

ALAN PARDEW was on the brink of the sack last night after Newcastle were beaten by Peter Crouch’s superb first-half header for Stoke. After owner Mike Ashley had ‘joked’ to a reporter that defeat at the Britannia Stadium would spell the end of Pardew’s near five-year reign, Toon fans spent the evening calling for his head. Pardew cut a disconsolate figure in pouring rain on the touchline from the moment Crouch powered home Victor Moses’ excellent 15th-minute cross. Fans of both sides promptly taunted Pardew with chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ and things nearly got worse quickly for the beleaguered boss. The lively Moses was clearly barged off the ball by Yoan Gouffran in the penalty area but referee Craig Pawson inexplicably waved away the home side’s

Newcastle built up some pressure of their own with Daryl Janmaat’s long-range effort forcing a fine diving save out of Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic. Pardew under pressure as Crouch goal adds to misery

Bitter Phil to swallow

Phil’s ‘corrupting’ affront on captain Watson leaves golfing world appalled Phil Mickelson has been accused of ‘corrupting the experience of the Ryder cup’ after his attack on beaten Us captain Tom Watson at Gleneagles. less than two hours after his team’s 16½-11½ defeat, Watson had to sit and listen to his most decorated player – who had been left out of a full day’s play on saturday – sing the praises of Paul Azinger, who captained America to their last win in 2008. it was an uncomfortable end to a difficult three days for Watson, and one that didn’t sit well with the majority of the golfing world. Former PGA Tour player and Golf channel analyst Brandel chamblee led the criticism, insisting the five-time major winner should look closer to home. ‘That was as close to a one-man mutiny as i have ever seen’ he said. ‘if you are looking for a reason why the Us continues to lose you just

by sAM cOsTELLO saw it, you saw it in one man, Phil Mickelson. chamblee continued: ‘Phil Mickelson, along with the best players of that era, have so corrupted the experience of the Ryder cup for their fellow competitors by not having records anywhere near where they should, given their rank in the game.’ six-time major winner nick Faldo said: ‘Phil certainly doesn’t respect Tom Watson. he threw his captain under the bus.’ colin Montgomerie, who led europe to glory in 2010, said: ‘should we go into this one hour after we’ve been defeated? no. You support your captain under all circumstances.’ Victorious captain Paul McGinley sympathised with his American counterpart Watson but admitted: ‘i always felt once the morning session was on, i was planning for the afternoon. i always felt i was half a day ahead.’

Not quite elementary: Losing captain Watson faces the media yesterday morning

G-Mac hails McGinley’s ‘message’ after pulling off master plan GRaeme mcDOwell admits he had brief doubts about Paul mcGinley’s Ryder cup master plan, but feels the Irishman has broken the mould for future european captains. mcDowell and French rookie Victor Dubuisson played so well in their foursomes victory over Phil mickelson and Keegan Bradley that they expected to play again in the Saturday morning fourballs at Gleneagles.

However, mcGinley stuck with his plan to just play the unlikely duo in the alternate shot format and keep mcDowell fresh to contest the first singles match, a plan which looked to backfire as mcDowell fell three down after six holes to Jordan Spieth. ‘The first six holes I was doubting how much I had played and was a little undercooked,’ mcDowell (pictured) said.

Thankfully, mcDowell found his form as Spieth stumbled and the former US Open champion went on to record a vital 2&1 win. ‘Paul has been the best captain I have played under,’ mcDowell added. ‘For a guy who sits in front of 12

players whose careers will probably be better than his, the respect he commanded in the team room, the intelligence he spoke with, his message was so clear all week. ‘I actually found myself listening to him thinking “This guy is impressive. This guy is educated, this guy has really put a lot into what he’s saying.”’
