bikes with wings and underwater vessels barely big enough to climb into – as these fascinating photographs show. Laughable as the ideas may seem, the pioneers of the past were not always so wildly off the mark about the shape of things to come. The treasure trove of pictures collected by amateur historian Chris
Hodge also reveals an early version of Skyping – involving a dial-up telephone and a speaker with twiddly knobs. There’s a rather sedate form of jetskiing, involving a chap on a Lambretta in his blazer and straw boater – and even a portable, albeit somewhat bulky, hairdryer. Businessman Mr Hodge, from south-east London, has spent years amassing his collection of photos,
some of which he has made available to buy as prints via website Easyart. The 56-year-old said: ‘It’s wonderful to be able to reveal the often hidden world of our past. It’s a unique insight into the way things were.’ Gyr King, of Easyart, said: ‘The vast majority of these images have remained unseen for several decades. They shine a light on the extraordinary inventions, machines, people, places and events in the past.’

PLANS for the shelved Metro North rail project could be back on after the Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe announced that it was part of a number of projects currently being reviewed. The proposed transit system, which would link the city centre with the airport, was abandoned during the economic downturn. Mr Donohoe said the service – which was estimated to cost in the region of €2billion and planned to provide transport links to shuttle thousands of people through 14 stops an hour – was a development being considered. ‘Twenty different projects are being reviewed in relation to the northside of the city. Anyway, twitter has been ‘fixed’. And now it’s broken. twitter was good too; narcissistic, yes, but whereas Facebook said ‘look at me’, twitter said, ‘look at this’, and the ‘this’ was potentially cool, provided you didn’t follow celebs. But now they’ve ruined it (on mobile anyway) by using the same clumsy model as Facebook to ‘react’ to your activity and shovel gallons of crap at you now that human nature is apparently reducible to the Amazon.com algorithm which commercially concludes: ‘people who liked that… also liked this!’ Here’s a newsflash: We don’t
know what we like! that was one of the few cool things about the original unfiltered news feed – the random stuff you never would have even known to look for. Besides, if there really was a formula for what we liked, every movie would be a box-office hit – and steven seagal would have an oscar – and we’d all be human batteries powering the matrix.

‘Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy.’ The band announced his departure last month but said they would go on without him and that their new album, Rock Or Bust, will be released in December. Young, who emigrated from Scotland to Australia at the age of 10 with his family, formed AC/DC in 1973 along with his younger brother Angus, who has famously dressed as a schoolboy onstage for many years. The band have previously survived the death of their singer when Bon Scott died in 1980 after a night of heavy drinking.
Moon mystery is solved ThE famous flattened image across the moon’s surface – dubbed the Man in the Moon – may have been created by the moon’s plumbing system. The mystery behind the 1,800-mile-wide section of the Moon’s Procellarum basin has been a long-running puzzle. New research, published in the journal Nature, suggests it may have been caused by a plume of magma deep inside the moon coming towards the surface.
by ORnA cunnIngHAM also found that 40 per cent do not eat a breakfast every day, with nearly ten per cent disclosing that they always skip the most important meal of the day. Meanwhile, 87 per cent of the girls surveyed did not consume the recommended daily amount of water and 7 per cent said that they did not drink any water during the day, preferring fizzy drinks. Fiona Gratzer, the creator of the Miss Feelgood guide, said: ‘Our survey highlights the challenges teenage girls face on a daily basis. ‘By making small changes to their
eating habits and lifestyle, such as having breakfast every morning, drinking water daily and regular exercise, it can greatly improve how girls feel about themselves.’ She added: ‘Our aim is to inspire teenage girls to enjoy cooking and eating healthy food, to arm them with the knowledge that true body confidence comes from within.’ With support from dietician Sarah Keogh and leading paediatric dietician Ruth Charles, the Miss Feelgood team is now embarking on a nationwide tour to educate pupils on a healthy lifestyle. An eBook of the Miss Feelgood guide is available for download.

ater conservation has become tethered to the wallet – and it’s finally time to swat up on the dreaded charges. But as more people become hosed with extra levies, Metro Herald wants to help lessen the pinch. From now on, households can expect to pay €2.44 per thousand litres in or €4.88 for dual water-waste disposal; about half a cent per litre. to ease us into paying, for the first nine months we’ll be on an assessed charge. But what happens when the meters begin to tick over? Like many people, I have little understanding of my water usage, or what my liquid rituals might cost. What is the environmental impact of my H20 habit? Has my penchant for long showers contributed to endangering the polar bear? and does the drip, drip of a leaky faucet now threaten more than my sanity? to find out, I’ve decided to carry out a general water audit. each household now has a minimum free water allowance of 30,000 litres. But in a house with four adults, with
normal personal hygiene routines, this will surely be guzzled in no time. In fact, according to an taisce, a tap dripping just once a second can waste 45,000 litres
per year. a high-powered shower each day would only sustain me until august 28, despite the fact that I’d quite like to maintain some semblance of cleanliness for the
whole year. even by standards outlined by Irish Water – that an adult will use 66,000 litres per annum – it will take some feat to avoid a bill in the New Year. So,
using stats provided by an taisce, Irish Water and taptips.ie, let’s assess the damage of my water habits. Maybe I can be more efficient and save the planet.
Splash out on water gadgets to help save money FlowSave Tap Insert Kit: this set will reduce water consumption by an average of 40 per cent per device. By combining a flow restrictor with an aerator (which injects air into the water stream) the only difference you will feel is in your wallet. accuflow. ie, €10.
Time Sense: according to alan James at WaterSenseIreland, this four minute timer is the simplest and cleverest of water saving devices. as most Irish people spend 7.5 minutes in the shower, just reduce this to 4 minutes and you’ll find you’ve automatically used a whole 46 per cent less water. WaterSenseIreland. com, €10. FlowSave Leak Stop: at the high-
end of technology and expenditure, this meter is fitted to incoming mains to locate low flow rates. It can pick up dripping taps to cistern leaks and burst pipes. accuflow.ie. Aroma Sense showerheads: these shower attachments reduce water output by 20 – 30 per cent whilst neutralising chlorine through a Vitamin C filter. Boosts water pressure by 50 per cent in 98 per cent of installations. WaterSenseIreland.com, €99 for the combo deal with the time Sense.
Amphiro A1 Smart Shower Meter: easily fitted just below the shower head, this digital add-on measures water usage, temperature and calculates shower efficiency. By simply being aware of your usage you could save on average 8,500ltrs per person a year and maybe a polar bear. accuflow.ie, €60. Kitchen Sink Plus: Universal to both
inside and outside threaded kitchen taps, this highpressure filter cuts water flow by 20 per cent. WaterSenseIreland.com, €29.99. HIPPO: the typical family uses 70 per cent of their water in the bathroom, with toilet flushing accounting for 30 per cent of the household water use. every time a toilet is flushed 3 litres of water is saved. eing economical, i may flush five times a day. Five toilet flushes (45 litres) = 0.22C per day = €80.15 year. Assuming i wash my hands after using the toilet, five 30 second hand washes (15 litre) = 7-8c a day = €26.71 year. They say that cleanliness is next to godliness, so I power shower daily for ultimate sparkle. Five-minute power shower (125 litres) = 61c a day = €222.65 a year. On dentist’s orders, i brush twice a day for two minutes. Brushing teeth (tap running) (24 litres) = 11c a day = €42.76 a year. To keep the bristles at bay, i’ll shave twice a week. Shaving (tap running) (60 litres) = 29c a week = €15.16 a year.
FOOD AND DRINK A probable tea addict, i might have four cups of tea on a typical day. A total of four cups of tea (1 litre) = 0.00488 a day = €1.77 a year. Recommended 8 glasses of water (2 litres) = 0.0972/1c a day = €3.54 a year. Cooking daily meals (3litres) = 76c a year.

Charles Dwyer, managing director at Lowflow Water Control and Detection, agrees that households will feel the affects more. He said: ‘The biggest thing i’ve noticed is that the payback for domestic conservation will be greater than for businesses due to the difference in cost per unit’. • A tap will waste on average 6 litres a minute. By simply turning it off as you brush or shave, Taptips.ie says you could ‘save over 7,000 litres per year’. That’s about €33.60 a year. • To cut down on water used per toilet flush, place a water displacement device in the cistern. Formerly the ‘brick trick’, they’ve modernised it with the Hippo bag. That’s a saving of 2-3 litres a flush. • ensure your washing machine and dishwasher are full before using them. • Keep showers under 5 minutes.
• irish Water will cover your first leak fix but watch out after that. • Keep a basin in your sink so you can re-use ‘grey water’ for watering plants. • Collect rainwater for watering your garden from a downpipe into a water butt. • if your shower can fill a 5 litre bucket in less than 20 seconds then fit it with a more economical head. You want to aim to be in the 30-40 litres per shower range, which would cost close to €70 per year. • A number of faucet attachments are now readily available to retain
water whilst boosting pressure. • go green and save water on your dishwasher and your washing machine. Choosing a more environmental spec could cut your water usage by as much as 11 litres – that’s at least €10 off a weekly chore. • An older washing machine might use as much as 60 litres a turn. A modern model would be half that – needing only 30-35 litres. • Retro-fit your toilet with a dualflush valve. An old-style loo can gulp 12 litres but through an upgrade this can be decreased by a quarter.

AST fashion gets a bad rap, but it means that anyone, on any budget can buy into the season’s biggest and most beautiful trends. Chloe, Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent and Ricardo Tisci have all produced heart-breakingly beautiful coats this season, which while a practical coverall, have really come to the fore as an outfit centrepiece, too. The trend we’ve been eyeing hungrily for months now has jumped from the catwalk to the high street, in a rainbow of fits and colours (think pink, nipped, tailored and burgundy, to gunmetal, classic heritage and flouncing wool). Kilkenny buyer Catherine Connolly told
Metro Herald that her focus on coats this season has paid major dividends as they fly off rails – but there’s no panic, as all the major stores are bringing their coat A-game, and in prices as diverse as styles. Dunnes trotted some firm-lined beauties down its catwalk (a burgundy number deserves special mention) but its blanket scarf wrap a la Burberry was the real winner. Clerys has an enormous coat range this season, with olives and tweeds easily stealing the show in its heritage collection, and Penneys has gotten in on the oversized trend with large tartans, houndstooth patterns and pretty-pretty pinks. Harvery Nichols is bringing the party to outerwear, with colurful explosions best worn draped, cloak-like – because after all, who said what was practical had to be boring? Time to get cool and cosy, folks - that’s a wrap.

not thAt kinD of Girl: A younG womAn tellS you whAt She’S “leArneD” by Lena Dunham (Fourth estate)
Douglas Coupland is known best for his zeitgeist-defining novels Generation X and Microserfs. A prolific chronicler of our consumer and tech-obsessed times, he turns his attention to a giant French telecommunications company in his latest book, Kitten Clone.
why do i keep on hearing about this? Because 28-year-old Lena Dunham is the creator, star and executive producer of HBO’s smart, funny hit comedy series Girls, based on her own experiences as a Millennial New Yorker. Hailed as ‘the voice of a generation’ and ‘an everywoman’ (largely because she’s heroically unabashed about her plumpness), she was paid $3.7million by Random House to write this. So does it live up to expectations? Well, what do you want for $3.7million? It’s not 50 Shades Of Grey or Gone Girl, nor is it as inclusive or rabble-rousing as Caitlin Moran’s How To Be A Woman. Instead it is a collection of beautifully crafted, deceptively lightly written essays prompted by Dunham’s life experiences that both fulfil and skew your expectations of her. The introduction describes the 20-year-old self-hating student Dunham devouring a dogeared copy of Helen Gurley Brown’s often ‘bananas’ 1982 guide Having It All. Dunham’s hope with these essays is that ‘if I could take what I’ve learned and make one menial job easier for you, or prevent you from having the kind of sex where you feel you must keep your sneakers on… then every misstep of mine was worthwhile…’
Appointment in SAmArrA by John o’hArA
So what will i ‘learn’ from it? That Dunham’s frontline – Brooklyn, Tribeca, Williamsburg, Hollywood – is not the one most young Irish women will fight on. Dunham is the privileged daughter of culturally and intellectually elite New Yorkers and this is a very American – actually New York – book reflecting a narrow life experience. Though it’s great to be invited in to gawk. is it as eye-poppingly frank as Girls? And some. By the end you’ve sat in on the sonogram that diagnosed her uterus as wonky and many of her sexual experiences and childhood therapy sessions. You’ll know that her handbag contains
‘Advil, Lexapro, Mucinex, Klonopin and Tamiflu, for emotional security’ and that she eats even nuttier stuff when trying to be healthy (‘soy green tea pudding’ for breakfast, anyone?) than Gwyneth Paltrow.
So worth reading? Definitely: for the fierce humour, hilarious honesty and shimmering ease of its confessional writing. It’s dedicated to Nora Ephron. Dunham is her obvious heir. Patricia Nicol
O’Hara was probably the greatest dialogue writer of the 20th century but he was not nice to people in real life, so in death he’s had no support from academics. This novel describes the disintegration of a Pennsylvania Cadillac dealer in the early Depression – and reveals thousands of layers of detail on the inner workings of a small town.
Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned” (Fourth Estate) is out now.
Downtown owl by ChuCk kloStermAn
Klosterman is from North Dakota and this book, like O’Hara’s, chronicles a small town. It takes place in the early 1980s so all the references echo my own references of the era. The characters are beautifully drawn – the access to their interior world is a gift to the reader. It has a very weird ending, too.

will Self made the man booker shortlist in 2012 with umbrella, a perplexing, 1970s-set tide of disconnected thoughts from inside the head of psychiatrist Zack and his misdiagnosed patient, a woman with memories of world war i. Shark is a prequel; like umbrella, it’s difficult but worth sticking with. As before, Zack encounters symptoms of madness with roots in historical conflict. this time it’s world war ii, as a cut-up narrative orbits the true story of how sharks ate the crew of a uS ship after it delivered the atom bomb bound for hiroshima. lewis Sullivan, a retired teacher, has lived in the same village all his days, his mundane existence the dismal consequence of desires not acted upon. when a former school friend turns up, lewis is forced to confront these realms of unlived experience, although little in this deceptively simple novel is predictable. Alison moore is very good on modern alienation and the growing conformity of everyday england. She doesn’t so much lay bare a life as shine blinding pinpricks into its darkest corners. Claire Allfree Salt Publishing, out now.

ohlsson’s strength is in placing normal people at the centre of remarkable events. there are no ice-cool lisbeth Salander heroines, just slightly shy fredrika bergman, a liaison officer between the police and government when a flight from Stockholm to new york is hijacked. things soon get murky. Are the terrorists who they say they are? hostage is hollywood blockbuster material and therein lies its problem: nuance is not part of its make-up. you’ll finish it in one gulp – but it won’t linger long in the memory. In the pits: Rosberg watches on during the Singapore Grand Prix
Nico and Lewis may part ways from team TOTO WOLFF has hinted there is a remote possibility Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will not be Mercedes’ teammates in 2015. Both are under contract but after a season in which the pair have clashed, head of motorsport Wolff said he was only ‘99 per cent’ certain the duo would be together again next year.
Mercedes out to deliver fair fight Mercedes will ‘redouble’ their efforts to improve reliability and give their drivers an equal shot at the world championship, insists the team’s executive technical director Paddy Lowe. Lewis Hamilton heads into the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend three points clear of team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg with five races to go. Rosberg was forced to retire from the Singapore Grand Prix after a short-circuit in the German’s car, handing Mercedes a fifth retirement of the season. World champion in 2008, Hamilton took full advantage of Rosberg’s woes in Singapore to pick up back-to-back victories. But the Briton has said he wants a ‘straight battle’ on the track for the title, rather than the outcome being determined by whose car holds up best. And Lowe has stressed he is working towards overcoming technical difficulties. ‘Credit must go to the team in terms of the strategy [in Singapore], which was bold but absolutely the right call,’ he said. ‘It demanded a lot from Lewis in terms of his performance in the final phase of the race but, as always, he delivered faultlessly. ‘On the other side of the garage, it was very disappointing. ‘Clearly, this is an area in which we need to perform a lot better. Reliability is something we have been working on intensively over the past 12 months and we will redouble our efforts.’

Ryder lead role suited Rory down to the ground RoRy McIlRoy says he was always determined to lead from the front as Europe completed their latest Ryder cup victory over America. The world No.1 picked up two points over the first two days of competition at Gleneagles before storming to a crushing singles win over Rickie Fowler on Sunday. It was McIlroy’s dismantling of one of America’s leading lights that really set the tone for Europe’s strong finish as they strolled to a comfortable 16 ½ – 11 ½ triumph.

spORT DigEsT Critical Rio wants to talk to Moyes FORMER Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand would welcome the chance to speak to ex-manager David Moyes despite being critical of the Scot and his methods at Old Trafford in his autobiography, which is out today. Ferdinand, now at QPR, said Moyes’ approach last season unintentionally created a ‘negative vibe’ causing some of United’s play to be ‘embarrassing’. Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson in the United hotseat in the summer of 2013 but lasted just eight months.

Danny’s flair for the big occasion gROup A
Wel deserved: Hat-trick hero Welbeck laps up the applause at the Emirates, where the game had to be halted in the first half due to fireworks on the pitch
aRsenal ..............4 galatasaRay ......1 by Danny griffiths DANNY WELBECK netted the first hat-trick of his career as awesome Arsenal celebrated Arsene Wenger’s 18th anniversary in charge with a landslide victory. The England striker led the Gunners to their first points of the group stages after a below-par opening match defeat at Borussia Dortmund. The big night was marred by Galatasaray fans throwing flares on to the pitch in the first half and a straight red for Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in the second. But despite those unfortunate incidents, this was all about Wenger – who took charge of Arsenal in October 1996 – and his newest recruit Welbeck, signed from Manchester United on transfer deadline day last month for £16million. Welbeck opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, timing his run to beat the offside trap and guide a pass from Alexis Sanchez through the legs of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Then, on the half-hour, he outpaced Felipe Melo to show both strength and composure before again placing an accurate finish in the far corner. Sanchez cut inside to add a third just before the break and Welbeck clipped in a lovely Alex OxladeChamberlain through-ball for his third of the night soon after the restart. Szczesny was sent off when he then upended Burak Yilmaz, who stuck away the resultant penalty, but it did little to overshadow a fine night.

Reds have Streller of a bad night in Basle Welsh rare fits: Former Swansea managers Rodgers and Paulo Sousa
LiVeRpooL’S champions League hopes suffered a blow last night after they were sunk by a marco Streller strike in Switzerland. Streller made the most of lax defending to fire home the only goal of the game on 52 minutes to leave Brendan Rodgers’ side in third place in Group B, with a Real madrid double-header up next. the visitors, however, can have little complaint about the result after a disjointed performance in the St Jakob-park stadium. a frenetic opening half produced little quality, with both sides struggling to find any sort of cohesion. Raheem Sterling had the ball in the net inside two minutes only to see his effort cancelled out for offside, while at the other end a decidedly shaky Liverpool defence were luck to have found their hosts in equally wasteful mood. Kompany: don’t rule us out of the running just yet Vincent Kompany insists manchester city’s hopes of winning the champions League are not over for a fourth successive season. the premier League champions are facing a familiar battle to qualify for the knockout stages of europe’s elite competition after an unimpressive 1-1 draw with Roma on tuesday. manuel pellegrini’s men have only a point from two Group e games and already trail Bayern munich by five points and Roma by three. Winning back-to-back games with cSKa moscow is essential and
skipper Kompany claims that city can still put Bayern and Roma under pressure. He said: ‘[the draw] won’t set us back. it won’t affect us. We will deal with it. it gives you a feeling to get back out there and show everyone how good we are. ‘We’ll play every game from here to the end [of the group stage] to win, thinking we can get three points.’ pointing out that the italians have plenty to do too, the city skipper added: ‘Roma still have to play
Bayern munich twice.’ Kompany is under no illusions and expectation is higher than ever after city’s run to the last 16 last season. Failure to get out of their group twice under Roberto martinez contributed to the italian’s departure. another early exit would be disastrous for pellegrini but Kompany is unfazed and said: ‘We are absolutely convinced with Roma away, Bayern at home and cSKa twice, if we play as well as we can, we should be looking to take three points [in each game].’
Not giving up: Vincent Kompany
u City fans have hit back at criticism from former United duo Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand over the atmosphere at the Etihad against Roma. the attendance was 37,509, around 10,000 short of capacity.
