Stars’ €77m Google fight over nude pics
Cara DeleviNgNe and Jennifer lawrence have threatened to sue google for €77million over their leaked nude pictures. The celebrities and other victims have accused the web giant of failing to remove the hacked images and of ‘violating’ their privacy. Yesterday it emerged that US lawyer Marty Singer sent a written legal warning to google founders larry Page and Sergey Brin. He accused the company of failing to ‘act expeditiously’ to remove the images from the web and of ‘profiting from the victimisation of women’. in the letter, Mr Singer added: ‘google knows the images are hacked stolen property, private and confidential photos and videos unlawfully obtained and posted by pervert predators who are violating the victims’ privacy rights. Yet

google has taken little or no action to stop these outrageous violations.’ in the document, obtained by the New York Post, Mr Singer also accused the group of ‘blatantly unethical behaviour’. Private pictures of Hunger games actress lawrence, 24, and model Delevingne, 22, were among dozens of images of stars floated on the web when hackers targeted their iCloud accounts. lawrence vowed to track down the culprits and have them prosecuted after her account was attacked for a second time this week. Mr Singer, who has also been recruited by singer rihanna, 26, said he sent a notice to remove the images four weeks ago but many photos were still on YouTube and BlogSpot, which are owned by google.

Don’t mess with this Living Doll! HE MAY be better known for his naff dancing than his tough guy persona but two of Sir Cliff Richard’s fans have employed him as their bodyguard – well, a life-sized doll at least. Jill and David Stolworthy are a bizarre sight as they drive with an effigy of the star in the back seat of their Peugeot 206. But Mrs Stolworthy, 68, feels a lot safer with him around. The couple snapped up Cliff’s head at a car boot sale before giving him a body made from MDF. Mr Stolworthy, 71, said: ‘We got the head because we like Cliff – Jill especially is a big fan – and it just escalated from there. ‘We thought he would be particularly useful when Jill is driving on her own, especially at night, so it looks like there is a male passenger. ‘We had him in the shed for a while, dressed in a high-visibility jacket and

‘Inspiring’ new schedule for Science Gallery
Bright igh idea: Student Carmel O’Brien and Minister Heather Humphreys
HOW well do you know yourself? What does trauma look like? Can you code a dance like you’d code an app? The Trinity College Science Gallery runs inspiring, informative and engaging exhibitions all year round, and now its organisers have released details of its list of exhibitions for 2015. Kicking off the programme is the Lifelogging
Lab in February. Visitors will ‘tool up’ and explore a fascinating project – themselves. Using sensors, reflections and analysis, those visiting will be asked to record details of their own lives and their bodies, and to figure out what they would do with the relevant information. Home, which takes place in May, will look at what we consider
a home, and exactly how technology and design will change that philosophical construct. Some 300,000 people are expected to attend the various exhibitions over the next year. The Science Gallery started in 2008 when a carpark in a forgotten corner of Dublin’s Pearse St was transformed into an experiment that attempted to bridge art and
science. Since then, some 1.7 million visitors have attended 32 exhibitions at the gallery. Speaking at the launch yesterday, Trinity College’s Vice-Provost and Chief Academic Officer Professor Linda Hogan said: ‘Science Gallery’s 2015 programme continues to present science and technology in a contemporary, inspiring way to new audiences.’

No opt out for developers DEVELOPERS will have to make 10 per cent of future residential units available for social housing, under new legislation. Approved by the Government this week, the forthcoming Planning No 1 Bill will ensure that property planners have to adhere to a number of additional requirements in future projects, including a vacant site levy and ‘use it or Lose it’ clauses. Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly said: ‘This will be a significant and highly socially progressive step forward for the planning process. If this planning policy had been in place since 2000, we estimate that there would be an additional 15,000 social housing units in Ireland today.’ He added: ‘Addressing the current housing supply shortage, which is particularly acute

This will no longer be the case, with the Department of the Environment expecting the change to yield an extra 4,000 social residences by 2020. Meanwhile, the land levy will enable local authorities in areas with a population greater than 3,000 to charge landowners 3 per cent of the property price for leaving their sites vacant and in disrepair. The Irish Council for Social Housing welcomed the decision at a time when social housing demand outstrips supply.
‘Disappeared’ IRA victim is removed The body of a man believed to be one of the IRA’s ‘disappeared’ victims was moved from a bog in Meath yesterday as family members looked on. Remains thought to be those of newlywed Brendan Megraw, from Twinbrook, west Belfast, were discovered by a drainage ditch in the middle of Oristown bog, Co Meath, earlier this week. The remains were placed in a wooden coffin yards from where the man’s brother Sean was comforted by relatives. He said: ‘It’s the end of a long search and Brendan can be laid to rest.’

He told her he was a fan of the TV series about a murderer working as a police blood splatter analyst and texted: ‘You will see a lot of similarities in the personality of Dexter and myself.’ Elizabeth’s friends asked why she stayed with Miles – who had been referred to mental health services after self-harming – but she said: ‘I am different from other females – I am fighting for him.’ On January 24 the couple went to his family’s flat above a shop in Oxted High Street in Surrey where he used knives and a saw to kill her. A partlyburned note was found listing some of the tools.

A LOVESTRUCK woman was cleared yesterday of trying to kill her mother by poisoning her Diet Coke in a plot inspired by TV show Breaking Bad. Kuntal Patel was found innocent of attempted murder but guilty of acquiring a toxin after the jury in her trial deliberated for just over three hours. They believed her story that she had ordered deadly abrin over the ‘dark web’ but stopped short of using it. Patel, 37, had become suicidal after her mother Meena, 60, forbade her from marrying her boyfriend, London’s Southwark crown court heard. She got hooked on Breaking Bad – in which drug king Walter White kills an enemy with ricin-laced tea – and fantasised about ridding herself of her ‘controlling’ parent. 60 seconds Simon Freedman is sticksman in both Oldskool and Whole Lotta Zepp, two Irish tribute bands that recreate the best tracks from hip hop and seminal English rockers respectively.
You perform in two different tribute bands. What can audiences expect from each?
The Oldskool show and concept is totally different to anything else you will see in Ireland. Hip hop has been an unbelievably important cultural movement, profoundly important I would argue. But, it’s also very groovy, borrowing heavily as it does from old funk records. This combo of classic grooves paired with a powerful, sometimes hard-hitting message makes for a very intense and we hope, enjoyable show. As for Whole Lotta Zepp, I’ve never in my life seen or even heard of a ninepiece, three-drummer Led Zeppelin act before. We faithfully recreate an album at each gig, playing just once annually. Blink and you’ll miss us, but if you’re a Zepp fan, it offers you something that a four-piece Zepp tribute cannot, and in that way, is a different animal altogether.
Your best live performance so far?
Playing Led Zeppelin’s drum solo tune Moby Dick with three drummers at last year’s Whole Lotta Zepp show was a real treat. The three of us were trading drum licks, and doing a fair bit of messing, like playing without sticks or throwing sticks across the stage for one of the other drummers to catch. It was a treat to perform with such great players.
Tell us about a night that it all went wrong? The night my drum
stool fell off the back of a four foot stage, and me with it, in the middle of a tune, would have to be among my career lowlights, as it combined embarrassment and a healthy dose of physical pain. I believe this is a rite of passage for drummers.
Do you ever get into character for the wrong band and start playing the wrong song? I am
a professional so this never happens. Well, it’s happened a few times. Look, it only happens once a week. It’s not a problem, let’s move on.
Favourite song to perform?
Whole Lotta Zepp have had some amazing moments for me on stage. Highlights have certainly been No Quarter with two drummers, all 11 minutes of Achilles Last Stand, and of course Kashmir with three
drummers. Childhood dreams fulfilled right there. With Oldskool, I have really enjoyed taking apart James Brown’s funky drummer groove which was sampled on the likes of Straight Outta Compton and Mama Said Knock You Out. It’s a drum groove everybody has heard, and you think you can play it… until you have to play it, at which point you realise you can’t play it at all and have to spend ages practising it to get it sounding good. Some day I’ll get it right, but Clyde Stubblefield is very hard to emulate.
Can people be a bit sniffy about tribute acts? I suppose so,
but I think that is changing. In my eyes, there is no shame in being in a tribute act. I feel honoured and privileged to be able to offer up a tribute to music as important as Led Zeppelin or to the hip hop genre, both of which have informed pop culture so powerfully for so many decades. That genuinely seems a worthwhile calling to me. Having said that, I would not wish to be in an Abba tribute band, but that’s a personal taste thing I guess.
Any plans to expand your tribute empire? We
are hopeful for a strong expansion push in Q3, 2015. Sales targets have been reached and breached, so we are looking for a 15 per cent yearon-year growth. I can do a pie chart to better illustrate this. A Venn diagram maybe? Nonsense aside, we are just happy to be playing these gigs at all.
If you were a kangaroo, what would you keep in your pouch? Well this depends… am
I a kangaroo with the brain of a kangaroo? In this case, I’d likely have my offspring in my pouch like the rest of the lads. If I had a human brain in a kangaroo’s body, I’d get the pouch sewn down the middle into two pouches, or pockets if you like, so that my car keys and my coins don’t scratch my phone. Oldskool play their Evolution Of Hip Hop show tomorrow in the Sugar Club, with DJ sets from Choice Cuts and DJ Scorpio. Tickets €14 (oldskool.ie). We’re splashing that extra cash on holidays IRISH people are taking more holidays than they did during the same period last year, Central Statistic Office figures show. We took almost 1.8 million domestic (national) trips in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 5.2 per cent when compared to the same period 12 months earlier. Each trip lasted an average of 2.6 nights, resulting in 4.6 million paid nights in beds.

US Ebola victim to be prosecuted Liberia plans to prosecute the airline passenger who brought ebola into the US, alleging that he lied on an airport questionnaire about not having any contact with an infected person, authorities have said. Thomas eric Duncan filled out a series of questions about his health and activities before departing on his journey to Dallas. On a September 19 form he answered no to all of the questions. it asked whether Duncan had cared for an ebola patient or touched the body of anyone who had died in an area affected by ebola. ‘We expect people to do the honourable thing,’ said binyah Kesselly, chairman of the board of directors of the Liberia airport authority in Monrovia. The agency obtained permission from the Ministry of Justice to pursue the matter. it’s believed Duncan became infected when he helped a sick pregnant neighbour to find treatment a few weeks ago. Four of his family were under armed guard yesterday.
Hong Kong talks avert fear of chaos FEARED clashes between protesters and police in Hong Kong were averted last night after its leader made a last-ditch offer to hold talks with student leaders. Chief executive CY Leung made the pledge just minutes before midnight local time, which had been set as a deadline for him to resign by pro-democracy demonstrators. Tensions had been mounting throughout yesterday after police were spotted carrying boxes of rubber bullets and CS gas, sparking fears of a violent crackdown. Protesters had threatened to occupy government buildings but the offer of talks appeared to calm tensions, with many residents returning home. Mr Leung said police would exercise ‘maximum tolerance’ towards protesters but reiterated that some crowds were ‘acting illegally’. When asked if police would use rubber bullets, Mr Leung told reporters: ‘If anyone wants to cross over the

Mr Leung added: ‘I will not resign because I have to continue with the work for elections.’ The development comes after five days of protests by demonstrators who are demanding free elections in 2017. Under current plans, only Beijing-approved candidates will be able to stand for election. However, there are fears among some demonstrators that the push for reform will now fizzle out. Kenneth Mok, a 22-year-old civil engineering graduate, said: ‘We are not worrying about excessive violent from police, as we don’t expect that they will repeat it again when the whole world is watching. ‘We are worrying that the movement will lose steam without a clear leader. We are worrying that people will now go back to normal as if
nothing has happened.’ Police use of pepper spray over the weekend had sparked outrage among the population. There has been particular anger over a clip of an officer tapping an elderly man on the shoulder and then spray-
ing him directly in the face when he turned round. The viral video of the incident has been viewed more than one million times since it was uploaded to the Facebook page of a local news site on Wednesday.

Pet dogs stolen for diners in Vietnam
Crowded: Animals are crammed into tiny cages
Thieves kill three boys who tried to stop them THIEVES are stealing pet dogs for people to eat in restaurants. They’ve snatched tens of thousands from homes across Vietnam after the government tried to restrict the dog meat trade by banning imports. The crimewave has led to violent clashes – and three boys were recently killed by thieves after chasing them to try to recover their animals. Lao Huynh, whose 18-year-old son Bau was among the victims, told Channel 4’s Unreported World: ‘He
by SHAROn MARRiS loved his dog. Because dogs like this one are like human beings. That’s why young people are so angry and want to chase the thieves. ‘I didn’t think they would kill him, just injure him. But they shot him intentionally in the temple.’ Up to 20 thieves have also been killed, and many more badly beaten, after angry animal-lovers sought revenge. But their dangerous trade is
also lucrative – earning them up to €75 a night. Enough live dogs to make seven tons of meat are brought to market every day in Hanoi. And one dog-napper told Unreported World he had stolen more than 3,000 in seven years. Activists are calling for laws to curb the problem because the thieves do not face jail if convicted. Unreported World: Vietnam’s DogSnatchers will be shown tonight on Channel 4 at 7.30pm.

Charlie Sheen goes dental in surgery
Angry dolphin lashes out SWIMMERS have been urged to keep their distance from marine mammals following an incident in Salthill in which a number of people were shaken by the unwelcome attention of a dolphin. Galway’s RNLI inshore lifeboat had to be tasked to come to the aid of swimmers off Salthill after a dolphin was reported to be ‘intimidating’ them on Wednesday evening. Eyewitnesses said the dolphin circled the swimmers before approaching them in ‘an intimidating manner’. The dolphin then touched off them with his tail and nose. The swimmers were all very shaken by the incident, sparking investigations into why the dolphin had acted in such a way. Reports yesterday indicated that the dolphin was a French-based animal which arrived off Inis Oirr, the smallest of the three Aran Islands late, last month. It is the same mammal which reportedly pushed a swimmer underwater off Sherkin island in West Cork during the summer. The aggressive behaviour is thought to be due to increased interaction with swimmers.
CHARLIE SHEEN has blamed a bad reaction to laughing gas after reports that he threatened his dentist with a knife while high on crack. The Anger Management actor is said to be facing a police investigation over claims that he attacked the dentist during treatment for an abscess in Los Angeles. But his representative Jeff Ballard played down the allegations – saying the nitrous oxide had a heightened effect because of the medication Sheen was taking for a shoulder injury. He added: ‘There was no knife involved and there were no illegal drugs involved.’ Sheen – who has a history of drug abuse – is said to have flailed his arms, striking a dental nurse who was placing the
nitrous oxide mask over his mouth. The nurse left the room to bring in the dentist and the former Two And A Half Men star’s security team. Sheen, 49, is accused of attacking the dentist at that point, although there is no suggestion that injuries were inflicted. One of the bodyguards reportedly said his boss was ‘high on rock cocaine’. Sheen’s lawyer Marty Singer claimed the incident had been blown out of proportion by the nurse, who he said was bitter after being fired for telling her son that the star had been at her surgery.
Surfer loses arm in Oz Shark attack
Man-eater: Great white shark
A MAN has had part of his arm savagely torn off by a suspected great white shark while surfing off the coast of Western Australia. The man was surfing at Wylie Bay in the town of Esperance on Western Australia’s remote southern coast when he was attacked by what is believed to be a four-metre (13ft) great white, according to Esperance Shire president Malcolm Heasman. A fellow surfer managed to get the victim to shore and to a nearby car park where there was an off-duty
ambulance officer, Mr Heasman said. The officer gave the victim first aid while they waited for help to arrive. The man, who was a visitor to the area, lost one arm below the elbow and suffered extensive injuries on his other arm, probably from trying to fend off the shark. He also had lacerations to his legs. He was flown to a hospital in Perth for treatment and is said to be in a stable condition. Within hours of the attack, fisheries officers caught a great white shark
that was between three and 4.5 metres (10ft to 15ft) long. It was not clear whether it was the same shark responsible for the attack, but officials were planning to examine the animal. Beaches in the area were expected to remain closed for several days and swimmers were told to stay out of the water. Police retrieved the man’s surfboard, which was covered in bite marks, Mr Heasman said. It was the second attack by a suspected great white shark in the waters off Esperance in a year.

Fertility of men is hit by alcohol By cOn DOHERTy Drinking just five units of alcohol every week could reduce the quality of sperm, new research suggests. And the more alcohol a man consumes, the weaker the quality of his sperm, the study found. Men of a reproductive age should be advised to steer clear of habitual drinking, the report’s authors said. The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, examined 1,200 Danish male military recruits between the ages of 18 and 28 between 2008 and 2012. As part of the assessment they were asked about their drinking habits and invited to provide sperm and blood samples. researchers found that drinking alcohol in the previous week was linked to changes in reproductive hormone levels, with the effects increasingly noticeably the more alcohol consumed. Among this group of men, researchers found that the higher the tally of weekly units, the lower was the sperm quality in terms of sperm count and the proportion of sperm that were of normal size and shape. The effects were evident in those who drank five or more units a week and most apparent in those who drank 25 units or more. Those who typically drank 40 units a week had a 33 per cent lower sperm count.

wrong or not, but to make a point similar to yours, that being democratically elected is no guarantee of good behaviour, as history has shown us time and time again. All too often, our judgements are based on simplistic labels like ‘democracy’ and ‘terrorist’. In any case, Israel’s relationship with Hamas is love/hate; hate for obvious reasons, love because they are a blunt instrument at best and as long as they are around, Israel has good reason to avoid negotiations. In the absence of a functioning Palestinian nation, all groups, regardless of the legitimacy of their cause, can be labelled terrorist. Marc, Wicklow

HE claim by Bono that Apple, not U2, gave away their latest album can only be described as disingenuous. Is he claiming as the band’s defence that they didn’t know what Apple was going to do with it when they had received $100million in return? Sadly, this whole episode is further evidence of the decline of a once great band whose primary motivation these days appears to be dictated by a balance sheet. Oh how I long for their Dandelion Market performances. Now that was a band! Giles, Dublin

he success of eimear McBride’s audacious debut novel, A Girl Is A half Formed Thing, is proof that good things happen to those who wait. having languished in a drawer for almost a decade after failing to hook a publisher, McBride’s manuscript finally came to the attention of a tiny indie press in the uK, who were bold enough to take it on. Belated compensation has arrived in the form of major awards – including the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction – and now a superb stage adaptation, courtesy of corn exchange director Annie Ryan. Aoife Duffin (Moone Boy) takes on the role of the unnamed narrator, who, with recourse to jagged and idiosyncratic syntax, relates the sorrowful story of her life from early childhood to the age of 20. But it is the abuse she suffers at the hands of her uncle that leaves the most indelible mark and sows the seeds for a ruinous, sexually precocious adolescence. In a brave and bruising performance, the pyjamas-clad Kerry actress stalks designer Lian Bell’s sparse set like an injured animal, creating a credibly damaged antihero who is, by turns, pugnacious and pitiable. Ben’s trouble and strife THE Big RELEAsE

Dead funny zom-romcom
Suspense: Nick (Ben Affleck) finds his life turned upside down when wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears As most critics will note, it is difficult to write about Gone Girl without giving too much away to those new to the story. It’s a narrative that depends on surprises, and they’re very welcome. There are absolutely terrific scenes: gripping, shocking, clever, darkly funny. There are others that leave questions hanging in your mind
after the credits roll. unlike a traditional twist-driven thriller, Fincher opts for a slower, steady pace where the ending of the film is only really indicated by a knowledge of the running time. While Affleck and Pike put in excellent performances, their characters are, of necessity, elusive. Fincher opts for a cold, film-

Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) is now a slightly less awkward teen, buoyed by his work with the famous Winter and a newfound interest from girls – something his friend Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) is jealous of. our wife has disappeared and fingers start pointing at you. How do you react amid the media circus? This is just one of the problems facing Nick (Ben Affleck) when Amy (rosamund Pike) goes missing. Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel, David Fincher’s thriller is an equally complex take on relationships, the press and the apportioning of blame. on the day of his wedding anniversary, Nick is at the bar he runs with his sister (Carrie Coon) when he gets a call saying his front door is wide open. There are signs of a struggle – and blood. A pair of cops (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) start sizing Nick up. A ‘Find Amazing Amy’ campaign is launched by Amy’s parents. Nick must learn how to look like a desperate, worried husband in front of the cameras – but is that what he really is? Gone Girl plays with the audience’s expectations and assessment of its central characters. Flashbacks show the couple in happier days, narrated by extracts from Amy’s diary. We first meet Zach (Dane DeHaan) when he is mourning the loss of Beth (Plaza, right). Zach’s parents think he needs to get over it – but when Beth returns home as if nothing has happened, he doesn’t need to. What he must do is keep Beth’s presence a secret – after all, everyone else would freak out, right? The plot is compelling and oddly familiar. Taking a darkly comic look at events, this delivers laughs while giving us characters to care about. The final act is disappointing, but it’s still worth a watch for comedy horror fans.

THE head of the International Monetary Fund has said that six years after the financial crisis struck the world is still mired in a disappointing economic recovery and will only be able to regain momentum through improved government policies. IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the world had experienced a sub-par recovery that remains ‘brittle, uneven and beset by risks’. Lagarde said the risks included possible escalation of the strife in the Middle East and Ukraine and dangers from the ebola outbreak in Africa. Policymakers, she said, would have to pursue reforms to break out of a prolonged period of mediocre growth. She called for reforms of labour markets and increased spending on infrastructure. Lagarde was speaking at Georgetown University to preview next week’s meetings of the IMF and the World Bank. Meanwhile, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi underlined the bank’s willingness to ramp up its stimulus efforts with large-scale bond purchases if needed – but otherwise he offered no new economic help at the bank’s meeting yesterday. Draghi described the economic recovery in the 18 countries of the eurozone as ‘weak, fragile and uneven’.
Joe Tynan of PwC, Minister Damien English and Ellen Szmanski of the US Chamber of Commerce at the Intellectual Property Conference and Awards in Dublin. PicturE: FEnnElls Nevertheless, the ECB chief offered no new help, choosing instead to stress what the bank had already done, and he repeated statements about the bank’s willingness to do more. At a press conference after the ECB’s decision to keep interest rates on hold, Draghi said the ECB would launch its already-announced programme to buy bonds made of
bundles of bank loans later this year. This is meant to encourage banks to lend more. Draghi noted that recent data confirmed the weakening of growth in the eurozone, which did not grow at all in the second quarter. The ECB president commented: ‘I have said many times that our recovery is weak, fragile, and uneven – and it still is.’
Employment on the rise with 700 new jobs EMPLOYMENT around the country has been given a welcome boost with as many as 700 new jobs announced in quick succession. Over the last 24 hours, new positions have been announced at West Pharmaceutical Services in Waterford and the
pharmaceutical packaging provider Optel Vision based in Limerick. Meanwhile, Dundrum-based company Car Trawler have revealed that it will be creating more positions. However, there was bad news for Galway, as Beckman
Coulter annouced its closure, with the loss of 70 jobs and the transfer of 70 others to Clare. Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs said: ‘It is extremely encouraging to see that jobs are being created for our highly skilled workforce.
This news comes alongside another drop in the live register figures announced yesterday which confirmed that the number of people signing on has dropped by 9.5 per cent since the launch of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs.’

Up cycling your CV This article comes off the back of interesting research published just last week which found that one in three small-to-medium sized firms in Ireland had received fraudulent references from job applicants. If this is happening at the reference stage, what does it say about some applicant’s CVs? Dare I ask, are some people including untruths, A.K.A ‘lies’ in their job applications? It seems so. Leinster pack solid as rivals go head to head A
S InSIDE THE 22 returns ahead of the biggest derby in Irish rugby, it’s time for leinster to signal the strength of their squad by beating Munster without the likes of o’Driscoll, o’Brien, Cullen, Sexton and Healy. A combination of retirements, injuries and, in Sexton’s case, departure have removed key ball carriers and leaders from leinster’s squad and, despite some of the promising young talent available to Munster, Matt o’Connor’s team have a much greater production line operation. The losses of world-class forwards like Cian Healy and Sean o’Brien are not easily overcome, but in Jack McGrath leinster have a Test-capped loosehead who can hold his own in the scrum, boasts a terrific work rate and has a nose for the try-line. o’Brien’s absence is one that should

Behind enemy lines stat a history of captaincy but ideally you want the younger players to retain more of a focus on their own game and allow the senior men to steer the ship. We think we’ll see Rob Kearney fully embrace leadership as one of leinster’s two co-captains. As the epitome of the modern rugby player expect Kearney to adopt the ‘do as I do’ method rather than ‘do as I say’, so that should manifest itself in some top-drawer performances.
Rory has a bad day at the office RoRy McIlRoy suffered a Ryder Cup hangover as he struggled to an opening round of 73 in the Alfred Dunhill links Championship on Thursday. The world number one, who helped Europe ease to victory over the United States last weekend, made one birdie and two bogeys at Carnoustie, one of the
three Scottish courses hosting the tournament. Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher, who lost both his matches at the Ryder Cup, found his form with a four-under-par 68, four shots behind leader oliver Wilson of England. Victorious Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley had to settle for a 72 on his
return to action after masterminding the win over the US at Gleneagles. Former British open champion Padraig Harrington carded a 66 to climb to joint third, level with fellow Irishman Shane lowry, one stroke behind Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin and two adrift of Wilson.

Struggled: Rory McIlroy
Munster’s squad contains four players reared in the leinster system: Andrew Conway, Felix Jones, Ian Keatley and Robin Copeland (sub academy) while prop Martin Kelly has played for leinster in the B&I Cup.
For a change this inter-pro has not been scheduled for the week directly before the European tournaments kick off. So not only do leinster need to raise their game against their old rival but they need to answer whatever questions remain in selection in order to fine tune things away to Zebre next week. In a pool containing Wasps, Harlequins and Castres, the province should expect to top the group but they have to avoid the errors of last season to claim a home quarter-final. Ultimately, Eu-
rope is where we judge leinster and Munster so while this game will serve to whet the appetite, history tells us to expect it to be tense and error-filled because the players put so much pressure on themselves. If leinster can rise above that, if the personnel can match the performance levels of the absentees and if leadership does not become an issue then o’Connor’s team should put themselves in position to make a statement of intent.
But the honours keep on rolling in as fellow pros vote him top NORTHERN Irish world number one Rory McIlroy was named on Wednesday as the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year for a second time after a stellar 2014 campaign highlighted by two major victories. The 25-year-old, who first landed the coveted honour in
2012, won out over Billy Horschel, Martin Kaymer, Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson in a vote of his peers. He also earned the Arnold Palmer Award as the Tour’s leading official money winner ($8,280,096) and claimed the Byron Nelson Award for adjusted scoring average.

Rodgers puts Liverpool first over Sturridge
LIvERPooL manager Brendan Rodgers admits he is not interested in thinking about Daniel Sturridge’s return for England until the striker is fit enough to play for his club. While the Northern Irishman went to great lengths to play down any suggestion of a club-versus-country row over the injured striker, he has certainly made his position crystal clear. Sturridge, 24, was injured in training while on international duty a month ago and has not featured since, missing six matches with a thigh strain. Rodgers said: ‘I’ve not spoken to Daniel (about the situation). My focus is on Liverpool, it is not on England. ‘I spoke to him about being available for Liverpool but I can’t think about England when he is not yet ready to play for Liverpool. ‘He’s had a grade-one injury for four weeks, which is a long time.’

by Daniel Jones ROBERTO MARTINEZ hailed the character of his Everton side as a late Samuel Eto’o equaliser earned the Toffees a crucial point in Russia. The visitors were on the back-foot for much of the Group H encounter and fell behind to Ferreira Ari’s goal just before half-time after some sloppy defending allowed the Brazilian to nip in and fire past Tim Howard. But after riding a second-half storm from their impressive hosts, the old head of Eto’o rescued a draw as he turned home an inviting cross from Leighton Baines. ‘I am pleased because Krasnodar played well, started with energy and pressed high up’ said Martinez. ‘I am pleased with the manner in which we stayed in the game. ‘We showed incredible character to wait and get ourselves in the game. ‘We finished the second half strong, energy levels were in our favour and it’s an incredible result for us.’ Everton are back in Europe after a five-year absence and Martinez feels the experience of three-time Champions League winner Eto’o, 33, will be crucial as the competition unfolds. ‘If you come to a place like today it’s easy not to be yourself and that’s where you need the experience of waiting for your moment. HANK goodness for Francesco Totti. I am, generally, a miserable man. Having set myself the task of finding something positive to write about last week, I spent a lot of time staring mournfully into the middle distance. My screen remained blank, my fingers still. It’s not that I don’t find pleasure in football, it’s more I like it too much and things that spoil my enjoyment tend to grab my attention more than things that make it just so. Rather than celebrate the good, I find it easier to moan about the bad. In football, as in life. But then Totti sauntered through the Manchester City defence to lift the ball – and in turn my spirits – impudently beyond Joe Hart. Here was a moment to savour. Like a latter-day Teddy Sheringham, with a more generous waistband but better hair, his was a goal we could all relate to, and one which left the slow-mo machine largely redundant. Totti’s majestic, arcing run didn’t so much outpace Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis as take them on a tour of the Etihad before giving

CRYSTAL Palace boss Neil Warnock says Hull’s Steve Bruce deserved to win last season’s manager of the year ahead of his Eagles predecessor Tony Pulis. After winning promotion, Bruce (right) steered Hull to a 16th-placed top-flight finish and their first FA Cup final. He was beaten to the top award by Pulis, who rescued Palace from the bottom three and guided the Eagles to 11th. Palace face Hull on Saturday and
premier league Warnock said: ‘I know Tony got manager of the year but I thought Steve Bruce was head and shoulders the best around. ‘To make a club like Hull comfortable in the Premier League and to get to the FA Cup final – I thought that was fantastic. ‘He’s done an incredible job and had fabulous support from his chairman.’
‘I expect Totti gives heatmaps short shrift’ them the slip, the Italian resetting his compass and warm-footing it towards goal. Afterwards he was asked if he’d been inspired by a tweet from City highlighting his poor record in England – because, you know, a great goal in itself is no longer story enough. The Roman dutifully said he had, although, having sent 89 tweets in two years and none since August, you suspect Totti checks his Twitter feed about as often as he pulls up his socks. A man who was breaching Serie A defences two years before anyone had Hotmail probably gives similarly short shrift to heatmaps and other online gizmos, but he’s increasingly in the minority. Statistics have a place, of course. All football fans care about the final score and analytics can help us work out how to get the right one. But often nowadays when people say they’re ‘watching football’ they’re scanning a timeline, clicking on a link and then, at a convenient break in their own play, glancing up at the game. What we’re missing is the majesty of a talent like Totti, reminding us why we bother with all the rest of it. There, a positive note to end on.

Both provinces come into this game with a record of two wins and two losses, but momentum is the vital prize, with the European Champions Cup kicking off in two weeks’ time. Despite the loss of Seán O’Brien, however, head coach Matt O’Connor believes that Rhys Ruddock and Dominic Ryan can step into the
back-row mix for Leinster and establish themselves alongside captain Jamie heaslip. ‘Rhys had a couple of fairly devastating carries against Cardiff at the weekend, so that’s something that we’ll need to get in our game with no Cian (healy) and Seán,’ said O’Connor. he added: ‘We’ll be looking for other blokes to stick their hands up and carry the ball. i think Rhys, Jamie and Dominic have done that.’

O’Brien may miss six Nations with injury by sAM cOsTELLO
Going under the knife: Tullow Tank is due to go surgery surger undergo on his shoulder later today.
Sean O’Brien faces a ‘nightmare’ six months sidelined with shoulder trouble that threatens to wipe out his Six nations campaign with ireland. Leinster boss Matt O’Connor has revealed that the British and irish Lions flanker will undergo shoulder surgery in London today. The 27-year-old has suffered an infection in the same shoulder that he had reconstructed after ireland’s 24-22 Dublin defeat to new Zealand in november. The bullish back-rower will miss ireland’s three-test autumn series and
‘It’s a nightmare, he is incredibly frustrated’ could now be left with just four international matches to prove his fitness for rugby World Cup 2015. ‘it’s a nightmare. He’s incredibly frustrated,’ said O’Connor. ‘There was a little bit of a complication with the previous surgery due to the infection, so they’re going to have to redo that reconstruction, which is a five- to six-month timeframe.’ ireland face South africa, Georgia and australia in their autumn Guinness series and have just 12
fixtures before launching their World Cup bid against Canada in September 2015. O’Brien has marked himself out as among the best flankers in world rugby through his gritty, physical style. The 30-cap back-rower was expected to form a dangerous partnership with Peter O’Mahony and Jamie Heaslip for ireland this autumn. now head coach Schmidt may well turn to Ulster flanker Chris Henry, who deputised most impressively last term as ireland claimed the Six nations title. Should O’Brien miss ireland’s Six nations campaign he would be left with just the World Cup warm-up fixtures to prove himself ready for the global tournament. ireland face Wales home and away and Scotland in Dublin august next year, before taking on england at Twickenham on September 5. O’Brien swells ireland’s list of autumn absentees after Munster duo Keith earls and Donnacha ryan were ruled out of november action. Luckless earls has undergone surgery on the patella problem that has dogged him for some time. Lock ryan could miss the entire campaign with a foot problem, while Ulster duo iain Henderson and Dan Tuohy have also been ruled out of autumn contention.
