internet murder just a click away by GrahaM KeNt
Finally, a paper that has real bite
IT DID for vice-president William Walden in American drama Homeland. And the trick of hacking into a pacemaker to provoke a heart attack will soon be used to kill a reallife victim, experts fear. The first ‘online murder’ will be carried out by the end of the year, they predict – with diabetics using ‘smart’ insulin pumps also thought to be at risk. Criminals could threaten to tamper with medical devices to extort money. Other ways of exploiting the so-called ‘internet of everything’ to demand ransoms could include hacking into handrecognition software to lock people out of their homes or cars. European crime agency Europol said: ‘We must expect a rapidly growing number of devices to be rendered “smart” and thence to become interconnected. ‘It is equally inevitable that many of these devices will leave vulnerabilities, via which access to networks can be gained by criminals.’ The warning comes after former US vice-president Dick Cheney revealed he had turned off his pacemaker’s wireless function while in office. Mr Cheney said he had feared that the technique later used to bump off his fictional counterpart Walden in Homeland could have been deployed to kill him. Security company IID, whose research is quoted by Europol, said murder would be the next step after cases of blackmailed hacking victims being driven to suicide.

The purr-fect place for a coffee RESCUE moggies may soon have a new social outlet, if plans to open Ireland’s first cat cafe come to fruition. Crazy Cats Cafe is the brainwave of Georgina O’Neill and she hopes the Dublin purremises will open its doors by next September ‘at the latest’. She’s already gotten interest from some rescue centres, as the cafe would also be used as a matchmaking location for people interested in giving a permanent home to a moggy. Georgina, who has two rescue cats of her own, hopes to raise about 40 per cent of the start-up cost through a crowd-funding site. She intends to raise the remainder of
the sum from ‘other sources’, including the possibility of a grant. The world’s first cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998 and they are hugely popular in Asia, particularly with apartment dwellers who cannot have pets. They’re now beginning to catch on in Europe and North America. Georgina has set up the Crazy Cats Cafe Facebook page to keep interested parties up to date and is currently looking for pictures of crazy cats. The entrepreneur said she has been inundated with CVs from people looking to work at the cat cafe, despite not having a location, premises or opening date yet.

N11 danger as stags run wild SEVERAL motorists are lucky to be alive after crashing into deer on a busy N11. A loose stag was killed and caused serious damage to a car on the Blessington Road – but the driver was unhurt. That incident happened on Saturday night and gardaí issued a warning on Twitter, advising drivers to ‘expect the unexpected’. Three stags were seen on the N11 through Wicklow and gardaí said at least two of them were killed.

Only joking – audience participation is not a thing in Love/Hate Season 5. The fate of this particular gang of bandits has already been written – and when season five closes with a bang (what else?), the Love/Hate crew will be no more. That’s according to yesterday’s Sun anyway, which deemed it to be the most likely article to be read, and put it on its front page. And who could blame them? Love/Hate rumours have been abounding for weeks, with oodles of column inches in the red-tops, a 12-page pull-out in the Star and the show being accused of ‘glamorising RTÉ’ by satirical website WaterfordWhispersNews.com.
by jOAnnE AHERn Senior ‘insiders’ confirmed to the Sun that writer Stuart Carolan has written ‘an explosive’ finale to the hit drama. This is in contrast to a report in last Sunday’s Independent, which said producers were in talks for a sixth season. But here’s where the real spoilers come in, if you didn’t catch last night’s first episode of the new season. Viewers were shocked as Darren’s killer, Lizzie, got a taste of her own medicine, offed by none other than ‘friend of cat killer’, Glen. Actress Caoilfhionn Dunne said she was surprised her character had made it to season five. She said: ‘I had met Stuart in the street and he had asked if I wouldn’t mind coming back for a little turn in Season 5. I said I’d be more than happy to.’
Nevertheless, she said leaving the show was difficult, but she didn’t want to play a character that had outstayed her welcome. ‘There’s no room for ego in this. The story comes first. I don’t know where else there was for her to go,’ she said. She revealed producers were so strict with preventing the plotline from being leaked or guessed, she was dressed up as crew to get her to the location. But she added that her only ‘niggle’ about Lizzie was that she and Nidge ‘never met’. ‘I loved playing Lizzie. She was such a wonderfully drawn character. It really was a gift. It was such a pleasure to be part of such a great show.’ Is season five the last for Love/Hate? Who knows, just sit back and enjoy and watch the drama unfold.

Irish Water denies plan to hire 200 more staff
UNDER fire Irish Water has denied a report that it is to hire an ‘extra’ 200 staff over the next year. In a statement last night, the newly created utility company said the Commission for Energy Regulation approved a staff number of 693 ‘in line with what a company the size of Irish Water requires to function’. It added that staff are being recruited ‘on a phased basis but are not yet all in place’. The company currently employs 514 people. Local authority water staff are not included in this figure.
by jOAnnE AHERn
A spokeswoman said: ‘We have phased recruitment to be as cost effective as possible. This is reflective of the phased nature of the company activity – for example, customer billing commences next year.’ She said the Commission for Energy Regulation had recently approved its costs for the next two years, which were ‘considered by the CER to be an appropriate spend, and to represent good value for the customer’.
‘The projected 2015 payroll costs will fit within this allowance,’ she said. ‘The 2014 budgeted Service Level Agreements payroll costs are €228m with Irish Water’s projected
Protests against the water charges go on employee payroll costs being €35m for 2014 and €48m for 2015. ‘The difference is accounted for by the fact that Irish Water staff continue
to be recruited on a phased basis throughout 2014 and 2015.’ Meanwhile, protests against water charges continue across the city both in local areas and at Irish Water’s headquarters on Talbot Street in Dublin city centre. Twelve people were also arrested in protests in Coolock last week. A national demonstration is planned by the Right2Water campaign for Saturday afternoon, starting from the Garden of Remembrance. Participants are being asked to wear blue.
call to enda on ‘jobs for the boys’ vote FIANNA Fáil leader Michael Martin has called on the Taoiseach to ‘state clearly’ how he wishes Fine Gael Oireachtas members to vote in the upcoming Seanad by-election. Fine Gael candidate John McNulty last week effectively pulled out of the race, asking members not to vote for him. The Donegal businessman’s call followed a controversy over his brief appointment to the board of the Irish Museum of Modern Art last month, ahead of his nomination to the Seanad on the culture panel. Enda Kenny has not publicly issued any guidance on how members should vote, and would not be drawn on whether Mr McNulty should accept the seat should he win. While Health Minister Leo Varadkar has said that he will honour Mr McNulty’s wishes and not vote for him, Junior Health Minister Kathleen Lynch (Lab) has already said she will be casting a vote for the Fine Gael man.
Angry birds on the net
In a scene reminiscent of an alfred Hitchcock movie, a hospital in Drogheda has had to spend almost €20,000 on specialist netting to protect its staff from flocks of angry birds. Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital bought the equipment last year to shield maintenance workers from feathered assailants in the vicinity of rooms containing vital hospital plant, located on the roof of the public hospital. a total of €18,435 was spent on the three roof nets.

Father jailed in Morocco for being gay
A CAMPAIGN has been launched to free a man jailed in Morocco for being gay – a ‘crime’ that carries a sentence of up to three years. Ray Cole, from the UK, was on holiday in Marrakesh when he was arrested at a bus stop last month with his partner, local man Jamal Jam Wald Nass. The 69-year-old, who came out a few years ago after being married for 45 years, was four weeks into a fiveweek holiday – his second trip to the country to see his lover, whom he met online several months ago. Last Thursday the pair were jailed for four months after police found a picture of them together on Mr Cole’s mobile phone. They were convicted of committing a homosexual act. Mr Cole’s son Adrian, 41, said the family had not been told of his father’s arrest and had feared he was missing for nearly a week before he was able to contact them using a fellow prisoner’s phone. They were able to visit him in jail three times last week, however.

Adrian described the prison conditions as grim, adding that his dad is sleeping on a concrete floor while on a waiting list for a bed. He is one of 60 people in a dorm meant for 44 and is fed boiled vegetables once a day. Mr Cole is not in good health, having a heart condition and previous minor strokes and depression but Adrian said his father was taking ‘a very stoic approach’ to his misfortune. Adrian said his father had thought that, as long as any homosexual acts were kept in private, he would not be breaking the country’s strict laws. ‘He knows he committed a gay act on their soil – he gets that – but I think the feeling is that, with his age and his health, he should have simply been deported.’ Kate Allen, Amnesty International’s UK director, called for Mr Cole to be released immediately, adding that homosexuality ‘is not a crime’.

Clarkson flees after he nearly becomes Falklands BBQ JEREMY CLARKSON evaded reporters as he made a low-key return through a Heathrow VIP lounge after being chased out of Argentina. The motormouth Top Gear presenter was smuggled through the airport with co-stars James May and Richard Hammond after escaping a mob which wanted to ‘barbecue’ them. Clarkson again insisted that driving a Porsche with the number plate H982 FKL to the site of the 1982 Falklands War was an ‘unbelievable coincidence’, claiming if he had been ‘trying to ruffle feathers’ it would have read W3 WON. The TV crew were stoned by locals as they drove towards Ushuaia – home port of the

Clarkson said: ‘This was starting to get ugly. They wanted blood. One said they were going to barbecue us and eat the meat.’
The presenters fled under police escort, but two of the production team were injured by angry mobs when they had to drive to the Chilean border through a series of ambushes. Ushuaia mayor, Federico Sciurano, said the violence was a ‘great mistake’.

LiLo: Drunk driving is my biggest regret ever
All Calls. All Texts. All Data.

INDSAY LOHAN blames getting caught drunk at the wheel for the start of her seemingly endless woes. The reformed hellraiser revealed her biggest regret of all as she made efforts to turn her world around by starring on the West End stage. Asked what she would change if she could turn back the clock, the 28-yearold said: ‘I would never have got behind the wheel of a car after having a drink. Ever.’ She was nicked twice in 2007 for driving sloshed. Since then, she has been carted off to rehab nine times and spent spells behind bars. But now, with the likes of Oprah Winfrey giving her performance the thumbs-up at the weekend, LiLo hopes focusing on acting will finally help her focus. ‘Acting is what
I do – it’s therapeutic for me, it’s fun for me,’ she told Marie Claire. ‘Yes, it’s my job – but I never went into it because it was like work. I got into it because it made me happy.’ And she appears to be on the right path after critics hailed her efforts in Speed-the-Plow. Mentor Oprah Winfrey swung by the Playhouse theatre, later tweeting that Lohan was ‘stepping up’. LiLo replied: ‘The defin i - tion of a blessing. Thank you.’

This is a question that must be answered by the people of Oakland, California, after a group of Occupy veterans decided shepherd mix Einstein should run for office. The group say the unusual candidacy is a form of commentary on individual political accountability. And Einstein’s press crew say they hope his election will create a shift in Oakland politics.

Ocean rescue for exhausted bubble sailor AN ENDURANCE runner had to abandon his bid to make a 1,033-mile ocean crossing in an inflatable bubble when he ran out of puff. Exhausted Reza Baluchi was rescued from his home-made ‘hydro pod’ by the US Coast Guard 70 nautical miles east of Florida. He had been hoping to get to Bermuda. The peace activist’s vessel – which has been likened to a hamster wheel – is made from plastic and inflated footballs held in an aluminium frame. He propelled it by running and pushing the bubble with his arms. A US Coast Guard helicopter was first called to his position last Wednesday after reports of a man disoriented and inquiring how to get to Bermuda. The crew warned him of the dangers and tried to dissuade him from carrying on. He refused to abandon his trip but then activated his locator beacon on
by SHAROn MARRiS Saturday because of fatigue. The Coast Guard said he was lifted to safety unharmed later that day. Mr Baluchi, an Iranian exile, said he had planned to make the crossing from Miami to Bermuda to raise money ‘for children in need’ and to ‘inspire those that have lost hope for a better future’. He has made headlines with previous efforts to break long-distance running and cycling records, including a sevenyear bike trip that he said took him across 55 countries on six continents. Mr Baluchi was granted asylum by US authorities in 2003. He had been arrested in Iran for ‘antiIslamic’ activities and served 18 months in jail for associating with ‘counterrevolutionaries’. His lawyer also said he had been hung from a tree by handcuffs for carrying a prohibited film.

One kind word to raise a smile HALF of us go a week without receiving a single compliment, a study has revealed. But four in ten say just one positive comment is enough to make them smile. And more than one in four would like themselves better if someone said a
kind word about them. Myriam Ruffo, from Ikea, which ran the survey of 2,000 people, said small acts of kindness – such as paying a compliment – would have knock-on effects ‘not only on the mood of the individual, but that of the nation’.

Charity begins with getting all of your facts straight...
I
N RESPONSE to Shakya, last week’s figures on charitable giving were a guilt trip with meaningless number misquoting. It took no account of matters like cost of living, real value of earnings, who was paying and how etc. For example, in 2012 our unemployment rate was nearly twice the uk’s but still our below-the-poverty-line rate was one-third of theirs (CIA world factbook). That makes us sound better. And this world will be a mess no matter how much we contribute so you do what you want with your money but please don’t try to guilt trip others on what they do with theirs. Hugh, Dundrum ■ Shakya, although you may be right that Irish people do spend a lot of money on alcohol and tobacco, you’re incorrect in the correlation between their spending on such substances and their generosity. By your logic, reducing the extremely high taxes on these products would increase donations to
charity. Do you really think that’s likely? Secondly, you haven’t taken into account the statistics involved when working out the average money given to charity per capita. The uk has a population far greater than Ireland and, statistically speaking, the two countries are completely incomparable when it comes to things like this. I suggest if you have a problem with how much money Irish people give to charity, you move to the uk or stop reading things you don’t understand. Rob, Bray ■ Marc, would you ever get real? Hamas shares the same Islamic supremacist ideology as Isis. They seek to destroy Israel, murder all Jews everywhere and establish a global Islamic caliphate. They simply differ on the means of establishing it and by whom it will be led. Just like global warming, the radical Islamic threat will not be solved by wishful thinking. Moshe Dayan

Marina Silva, one of 12 siblings from a poor rubber tapper family, is challenging incumbent president Dilma Rousseff, who faced protests over corruption when a million people took to the streets last year. Rousseff, 66, was born into an upper-middle-class household in Belo Horizonte and became a career civil servant before entering politics. The twice-married grandmother was

2. Resurrection
Watch, 9pm It may not have the ethereal mystery of French drama The Returned, with which it shares a remarkably similar DNA, but this US drama about the reappearance of long-dead residents of a small town has cast a spell of its own. Series one ends with Bellamy (Omar Epps) trying to save Jacob.
3. Today’s Film: Trance
Sky Crime/Thriller, 9pm Danny Boyle’s effort is something of a surprise, a complex thriller which throws amnesia, international art theft and seduction into its plot. James McAvoy is suitably intense as the art expert whose missing memory holds the key to the mystery.

Don’t funk with the recipe PRINCE
ART OFFICIAL AGE (WARnER BROs) ★★★✩✩
PRINCE & 3RDEYEGIRL
PLECTRUMELECTRUM (WARnER BROs) ★★✩✩✩

ou wait years for a Prince album and then… actually, you don’t. one striking feature of the micro Minneapolitan’s 35-year career is his prolific output – he’s released one LP almost every year, sometimes two and, in 2004, three. He’s made too many records to maintain the dazzling standard of his ‘imperial’ phase, i.e. from 1979’s Prince to 1988’s Lovesexy – although Diamonds And Pearls and The Gold Experience had their moments, too. But down the decades, there’s been a lot of disappointing filler in Mr Nelson’s trunk of funk. Now, he’s dropped two records on the same day. Art official Age is his solo concept album and imagines him waking from 45 years in suspended animation. It features quasi-metaphysical musings (such as affirmation III) along with his trademark lasciviousness (the blush-worthy The Gold Standard) and ranges across R’n’B pop, smooth neo-soul and heavy funk. The punchily retro Clouds and Breakdown – where Prince’s window paneendangering falsetto o n s confesses: ‘I used i Prince ely to to want a house k with the biggest more li ith his w s s pool; reminiscing e m than now, I just feel recipe la is like a fool’ – are o C Coca- its the highlights. with Nothing is unfamiliar, but then, Prince is no more likely to mess with his recipe than Coca-Cola is with its. Plectrumelectrum is principally the work of his all-gal band 3RDEYEGIRL. As the title suggests, it leans heavily on hard rock and soft metal, mostly of the traditional LA kind, and is stacked with squealing guitar solos, harmonising duets and molten riffs that will be familiar to fans of Fleetwood Mac and Guns N’ Roses. The title track and Marz are fun enough in a raucously predictable way but Plectrum… feels more like a tribute album than an original.

THE LOST bROTHERS
nEW sOnGs OF DAWn AnD DUsT (LOjInks) ★★★✩✩ After stints in two separate bands, Irish duo Mark McCausland and Oisin Leech came together in 2008, releasing three much-loved albums that culminated in 2012’s critically acclaimed The Passing Of The Night. Though billed as a fresh start and a move away from their ‘strictly folk/Americana thing’ this is really just business as usual for the pair. Opener Spanish Reprise contains a lovely instrumental lilt that promises much but ultimately leads into the chirpy-but-throwaway Days Ahead. The gentle,

V FOR VAsELInEs (ROsARy MUsIC)
★★★✩✩
Glasgow’s lo-fi indie pop team Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee (a former couple) cemented their cool in the early nineties when Nirvana chose to cover them – but they’d already broken up, after just one LP. Following on from 2010’s irreverently named Sex With An X, there’s plenty of melodic, ramshackle fun to be had here – but, although an off-the-cuff amateurishness has always been a consciously large part of The Vaselines’ charm, there’s so little development here that the band could easily have been better off just letting things be. JAMIE T
CARRy On THE GRUDGE (VIRGIn)
★★★★★
Mercury-nominated south London troubadour Jamie T pulled off quite the disappearing act for the past half decade. But this third-album comeback is more than worth the wait. His thrillingly effective mixture of punk, folk, Two Tone and direct but audacious lyricism is still there – albeit in a more sedate and worldly-wise guise. Caustically self-critical and gut-thumpingly adept at exploiting the slippage between melancholy and euphoria, tracks such as the sombre skank Don’t You Find strongly recall the songwriting of mentor Damon Albarn. But he’s got some faster tracks up his sleeve here too – most notably the crunching, singalong Rabbit Hole. AD
ALSOOUT... MARIANNE FAITHFULL GIVE MY LOVE TO LONDON ★★★★✩ Faithfull has collaborated with an impressive roster – from Nick Cave and Roger Waters to Anna Calvi and Brian Eno – on an often beautiful and varied album that sees her sounding indomitable, if broken in some places. AD LUCINDA WILLIAMS DOWN WHERE THE SPIRIT MEETS THE BONE ★★★★✩ This new LP from Williams is an anguished and soulful, elegantly ragged, country-rock and bluesy Americana affair that tears at the heart whether she’s playing it tough (West Memphis) or tender (It’s Gonna Rain). SO’C CHANCHA VIA CIRCUITO AMANSARA ★★★★✩ Fans of Breaking Bad will have heard CVC’s grooves. It’s the alias of Argentine producer Pedro Canale, whose sound fuses South American folk and contemporary electronica. This album ranges from dubbed-out rave to percussive voodoo. SO’C rolling ballad Derridae gets things back on track with a chorus that recalls The Kinks’ Days. While the duo are wary of comparisons to The Everly Brothers, the number of tracks that see harmonies coupled with lightly embellished arrangements mean the parallels are irrefutable. And although the album peaks with dreamy instrumental interludes (Nocturnal Tune) and bouts of shadowy, mumbled dialogue (Between The Crow And The Rat), it’s mostly comprised of soft acoustic yarns that are wellintentioned, if not terribly arresting. Still, there are far worse companions for the impending descent into winter. bryan O’Hanlon

Nicholls is a charming man who appears contorted with anxiety. So keen was he not to ‘disappoint’ people with us, he abandoned a previous attempt at 35,000 words in. Nor did he want to write one Day all over again. ‘In the end I had to throw all copies of one Day out of my office and refuse to talk about it,’ he says. ‘Don’t get me wrong: I’m hugely grateful for the publicity, but…’ he trails off. happily, us is a quintessential Nicholls mix of smarting comedy and emotional exhilaration. It’s another love story but this time set in the late September years of a marriage between two fiftysomethings, Douglas and Connie. Connie has abruptly announced she

he author David Nicholls has only been recognised once. ‘In Sweden. In a fish restaurant,’ he says, looking sheepish but relieved. ‘honestly, generally people don’t even recognise my name.’ this is surprising for someone behind one of the most eye-wateringly successful novels in living memory. at one point in 2010 it seemed like every Dublin commuter was chortling and weeping over one Day, the ingeniously structured, will they/won’t they romcom about the beautifully mismatched emma and Dexter. It was made into a film starring anne hathaway and sold five million copies worldwide; earlier this year eason’s included it on a list of the ten most ‘romantic reads of all time’. the film rights to Nicholls’ new novel, us, are already in hot demand in hollywood.

Romancing the tome: Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star in the big-screen adaptation of David Nicholls’ (left) romance One Day is leaving Douglas after 24 amicable years of marriage but first she wants them to take their 17-year-old son albie on a last big holiday to the great art galleries of europe. Douglas – a fastidious, straight-laced, unemotional man – is grief-stricken and determined to use the Grand tour, as they call it, to save his family. ‘I wanted to write the next bit in the love story: the period where the person you fell in love with leaves towels on the floor and doesn’t take out the bins,’ says Nicholls, who has himself been with his partner for several years. ‘In that respect it’s an informal sequel to one Day. and I wanted to write characters

who were in direct opposition to emma and Dexter. Douglas sees himself as a sort of über dad but his son constantly rejects him. I thought there was real agony in his situation: that he might at 54 find himself without the two people he loves most in the world. It’s about unrequited love within the family, which is so painful it’s almost taboo.’ Nicholls, 47, who also has a side career as a successful tV script writer, has two children under ten and lost his father during the writing of us. Being a parent and losing a parent have inevitably shaded the book. Nicholls says that having children made him
more sympathetic towards his parents but concedes he and his father weren’t close. So far, the evidence is that the book works: us was longlisted for the Booker, while Nicholls is particularly proud of the fact that men responded so strongly to one Day. ‘I loved that so many said it took them back to reading. I’ve always thought it a great shame that men don’t read more.’ ‘When my father died I surprised myself by reaching for a book. there’s something about the solitude and immersion in the written word that’s wonderful and life changing.’

SHEER cLASS kEEpS fAnS HAppy REVIEW
Ed Sheeran, 3Arena, Dublin HHHII RecenT arena tours have been characterised by over zealous popstars, each outdoing one another with increasingly elaborate installations and over-the-top pyrotechnic displays. But not our ed. On a rain-sodden Dublin night, the moppy-haired singer humbly slinks onto the massive stage, greeting the sold-out crowd with only a guitar and a retro Irish football jersey on his back. Just how will this work, you wonder? Quite easily by all accounts. Feeling run down from the off, Sheeran informs us that his voice is waning and urges the audience to go wild and lose their own. So rapturous is the reception for early hit Lego House however, that you feel such encouragement was hardly necessary. These doe-eyed acoustic numbers are tonight’s bread and butter but to typecast Sheeran as mere romantic balladeer would be unjust. The
Pharrell-produced Don’t is the undisputed highlight as he morphs into a souledup little groover, while the breakout ‘rap’ sections are more impressive than they have any right to be. As a one-man-band Sheeran performs admirably, looping ad hoc thumps and riffs into big anthems that have the audience flitting between states of pure
revelry and hushed reflection. It’s no mean feat and though he occasionally looks flat out, he holds it together – possessing the requisite confidence and swagger to dominate the arena. At times it’s overly earnest, but as The ATeam kicks in and the walls reverberate with teenage screams, no one cares. Bryan O’Haloran

Are Virgin’s staff really W
OULD you like to take as many holidays as you like and not worry about what work will think? That’s what Virgin workers can do under a new initiative rolled out by Richard Branson. The Virgin boss has explained that he is doing away with the company’s annual leave policy and handing the responsibility over to the workers. Employees will be able to determine how often and how many days they take off. Virgin isn’t the first company to introduce such an unusual HR policy – that was Netflix. In an article in the Harvard Review,
Companies are beginning to let their employees decide how many holidays they take. Chris Finnerty looks at whether it could work in Ireland

Patty McCord, the former talent officer for Netflix, explained that it was about trusting people, not policies, as well as hiring and rewarding ‘fully formed adults’. Employees were told to take as many holiday time as they felt was appropriate. Bosses and employees were asked to work it out with one another. There were some rules. If you worked in accounting or finance, you shouldn’t plan to be out during the beginning or the end of a quarter, because those were busy times. If you wanted 30 days off in a row, you needed to meet with HR. This was the idea Branson picked up on and decided to implement in his own company, urging others to do the same. He said: ‘It is left to the employee alone to decide if and when he or she feels like taking a few hours, a day, a week or a month off, the assumption be-
ing that they are only going to do it when they feel a hundred per cent comfortable that they and their team are up to date on every project and that their absence will not in any way damage the business – or, for that matter, their careers.’ So, does it work? The first thing that pops into people’s minds is that surely employees could just take advantage of it, swanning off when they like. But at the centre of the idea is trust. Trust between the employee and the employer that they are valued as part of the team and trusted to make correct decisions. In Ireland, the basic annual paid leave entitlement is four weeks. This is the minimum entitlement under

Martin takes victory in Tour of Lombardy
rugby leinster
IRELAND’S Dan Martin held off Alejandro Valverde and Rui Costa to win the one-day Tour of Lombardy for Garmin-Sharp yesterday. The 2013 LiegeBastogne-Liege winner was part of a group which hauled in breakaway pair Pieter Weening (Orica-GreenEdge) and Ben Hermans (BMC Racing) in the final kilometre and he pulled away in the final corners. Martin, the nephew of Tour de France winner Stephen Roche, crashed in the event last year and also in this season’s Giro d’Italia and Liege-BastogneLiege. He said afterwards: ‘I love this race, it’s one of my favourite races. To get second and crash in the last corner last year, it’s incredible to win it after all the bad luck this year.’ No way through: Leinster’s Mick McGrath gets stopped in his tracks
LEinsTER’s OLDER HEADs nEED TO sTART sHOwing THEiR LEADERsHip skiLLs WHERE were the leaders? Twenty-three men pulled on blue jerseys on Saturday evening at Aviva Stadium but fewer than a handful actually wore them with any conviction. No Sean O’Brien, no Cian Healy, no Brian O’Driscoll and, it appeared, no appetite for the fight. World-class players are leaders in their own right by their nature because their performances and actions set a tone, and on Saturday night very few, if any, Leinster players looked like they wanted to take responsibility for that. Credit to Dominic Ryan and Rhys Ruddock for trying to bring an edge in the close quarters but Munster’s rudimental, physical and very effective approach seemed to scare off Leinster like a blindside punch to the jaw. Rob Kearney certainly tried to stamp his authority on the team but too many players were left looking around at each other waiting for someone else to signal the charge. As senior players, Jamie Heaslip, Gordon D’Arcy, Eoin Reddan and Mike McCarthy should have done more to help their less experienced colleagues – six of the replacements had never faced Munster before in their careers, while starting players such as Michael Bent, Darragh
Fanning and Brendan Macken have very little experience of these marquee occasions. Were there any positives? Well, better such an implosion occurs in early October rather than after Christmas and coach Matt O’Connor will be thankful that there is a Guinness PRO12 clash with Zebre to address his side’s inefficiencies before the Champions Cup kicks off. It was also encouraging to see the Byrne brothers continue to get more exposure alongside back row Jack Conan. Those are three academy graduates who will add quality depth to the squad this season, particularly because they are effective and dynamic ball carriers among the forwards and somebody need to fill the voids left by the injuries to Sean O’Brien and Cian Healy. Expectation will now fall on the shoulders of Ryan and Ruddock in the back row, because having shown promise early in their careers, Leinster now need them to be more than just complementary pieces. These are two young men with proven leadership credentials and those qualities will be needed more than ever in the next couple of weeks. Leinster have not become a bad team overnight, but they needed more direction on the pitch and in an effort to find a solution they must now look to each other and not just at each other.

‘My prayers are with Bianchi’
Horror crash overshadows Hamilton’s rain-hit victory by ADAM HAy-nicHOLLs F1 Correspondent Lewis HamiLton admitted he ‘enjoyed the ride’ as he won and extended his championship lead at a wet suzuka, but it was a serious injury to marussia’s Jules Bianchi which overshadowed the Japanese Grand Prix. Rain had long-threatened the running of a grand prix which could yet prove pivotal in Hamilton’s title battle with mercedes team-mate nico Rosberg as the Briton outpaced his rival to finish the shortened race in front. a red flag had stopped the action after just two laps as – despite starting the race behind the safety car – the heavy rain being pushed over suzuka by typhoon Phanfone continued to fall. the grand prix restarted and Hamilton passed pole-sitter Rosberg on lap 29 before disappearing into the distance. However, the race would not be completed as the rain returned, with Bianchi crashing out late on to see
the red flags return. the 25-yearold Frenchman aquaplaned and left the track in the same place where sauber’s adrian sutil had suffered a similar fate on the previous lap. Bianchi was understood to have crashed into the recovery vehicle that was in the process of removing sutil’s car and, with an ambulance deployed, the race was halted after 44 laps and Hamilton declared the winner. the win moves Hamilton ten points ahead of Rosberg with four races remaining but the Briton was subdued after Bianchi’s incident, which saw him have emergency surgery on a severe head injury in hospital ‘our first thoughts go to Jules – it overshadows everything else when one of our colleagues is injured and we are praying for him. next to this,
Called to a halt: Bianchi, left, crashed into the recovery vehicle, which was removing Sutil’s car, right, after it slid off at the same corner
the race result doesn’t seem significant at all,’ Hamilton said. ‘Generally the car was absolutely fantastic through the race and once i passed nico i was able to really manage the gap and enjoy the ride. obviously it didn’t finish the way we would have hoped. my prayers are with Bianchi and his family.’ sebastian Vettel finished third ahead of Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with mc-Laren’s Jenson Button fifth.

United had taken the lead through angel di maria, who curled past Tim Howard in the first half. everton were allowed back into the match when luke Shaw lost Steven Naismith, who headed leighton Baines’ fine cross past david de Gea. despite being second best in every department, everton will feel they should have taken a point from this game.
14 Penalties scored in 14 attempts by Baines before yesterday’s match
de Gea kept United in it with two outstanding late saves from leon osman and Bryan oviedo, and at the end of the first half Baines saw his spotkick saved by the Spaniard after Shaw brought down Tony Hibbert. Shaw tweeted his gratitude to the keeper, saying: ‘Wow @d-deGea was unbelievable today! Thank you my friend for the penalty save.’ di maria was named man of the match but said: ‘david deserves this reward rather than myself. He saved us throughout the game.’ Van Gaal praised both men, saying: ‘When you hold the penalty out and in the dying seconds you hold three magnificent saves, then you are great because you win the game because of that. ‘When you give assists and also you score goals, what can you ask more of a player? ‘But we have to improve in a lot of things and also di maria has to improve. When he does that every week, then we have to be very pleased with him.’

An Ali Crawford strike in the second half saw Accies win at Celtic Park for the first time in 76 years to top the Scottish Premiership, while the defending champions are down in sixth. ‘We missed a few chances but at the end we didn’t deserve anything,’ said Brown (pictured). ‘We didn’t play as well as we

Jose says he always listens to his doctors CHELSEA boss Jose mourinho insisted he would never interfere in medical decisions after Thibaut Courtois suffered a head injury against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Relieved Reds feel A-dam sight better AdAm LALLAnA admits it would have been a long international break for himself and his Liverpool team-mates without victory over West Brom. The £23million man opened his Reds account with a wellworked goal having combined with Jordan Henderson, who grabbed the winner after Saido Berahino had converted a second-half penalty. It ended a three-match winless run and England international Lallana said: ‘It is huge because it is two weeks and if you get an indifferent result, and are dwelling on it, it can last forever. ‘We know it was a poor result in Basle [where Liverpool lost 1-0 in the Champions League] but three days later we got had game and used it to our advantage and got three points.’ Lallana was a boyhood Everton fan but you would not have guessed it from the way he celebrated his goal. A knee injury curtailed the start of his Anfield career and he said: ‘A lot of my feelings were represented in my celebration. ‘It was a proud moment with a bit of relief. I got nine in the league last season so it would be nice to get double figures, especially when Studge [daniel Sturridge] is out injured we have to chip in.’
Lallana’s performance drew high praise from Reds boss Brendan Rodgers who said: ‘His intensity and work-rate was exceptional, and he showed his quality. ‘He is a wonderfully technically gifted player and he scored a wonderful goal.’ In-form Berahino’s now has six goals in all competitions this term
but Baggies boss Alan Irvine cautioned against over-hyping the England Under-21 international. ‘Everyone is talking about Saido and understandably so as he is a really talented young player but he is going to miss chances,’ said Irvine. ‘He needs to be that little bit more clinical at times.’

Rock-bottom Hoops have to shape up, admits Harry pREMiER LEAguE WesT ham ..............2 qpr .......................... 0 by Richard Hookham Harry redknapp accepts his players are lacking fitness but denies they have no fight after Qpr slumped at Upton park. nedum Onuoha’s own-goal and diafra Sakho’s second-half header gave all three points to the Hammers, who move up to seventh. The defeat leaves rangers rockbottom with just four points from seven
Defiant: Redknapp matches and yet to register an away point. Qpr chairman Tony Fernandes tweeted after the game: ‘Just not good enough’, and Sky Sports pundit Gary neville described the visitors’ attitude as ‘diaboli-
cal’. redknapp refused to criticise his players’ commitment but said: ‘It wasn’t great, that’s for sure. ‘That’s [neville’s] opinion. I’ve seen some diabolical performances of late as well but we won’t go into that one. ‘We need to get them fitter. I’ve put a lot of faith into Sandro. Unfortunately, he’s had an injury. I had him at Tottenham and when he’s fit he’s a fantastic player.’ When asked if the players were letting him down, redknapp said: ‘I don’t think so. We’re just short up front. ‘It’s been difficult, we lost Loic remy on the deadline and couldn’t get a replacement. We’ve had a tough start but there’s an awful long way to go.’
