mind still ‘alive’ after body dies

PeoPle may still have consciousness after ‘death’ a new study has claimed. A large-scale study involving 2,060 patients from 15 hospitals in the UK, US and Austria has found patients experience real events for up to a three-minute period after their heart has stopped beating. Dr Sam Parnia, assistant professor of critical care medicine and director of resuscitation research at the State University of New York, explained that it was previously thought that only hallucinatory events were experienced in these circumstances. These are normally described as out-ofbody experiences (oBes) or near-death experiences (NDes). The Awareness during Resuscitation (Aware) study used objective markers to establish whether the experiences were real or hallucinatory. The results showed that 39 per cent of patients who survived cardiac arrest described a perception of awareness but did not have explicit recall. A total of 46 per cent experienced a broad range of mental recollections, nine per cent had experiences compatible with NDes and two per cent exhibited full awareness compatible with oBes with explicit recall of ‘seeing’ and ‘hearing’ events. Dr Parnia said: ‘This is significant, since it has often been assumed that experiences in relation to death are likely hallucinations or illusions, occurring either before the heart stops or after the heart has been successfully restarted, but not an experience corresponding with “real” events when the heart isn’t beating.’

thug who set dog on fire is jailed

AnimAl rights campaigners applauded as two men were jailed over an attack in which a family’s beloved pet dog was set on fire with diesel. Andrew Richard Stewart, 23, who admitted setting fire to Cody the collie two years ago, was handed a 20-month sentence at Belfast Crown Court – ten months of which was suspended. He was also banned from keeping animals for 30 years. Jamie Downey, 23, was jailed for six months after admitting lying to cover up what his friend had done. The dog had become attached to the pair as they walked off the effects of a two-day drinking binge. Cody, a three-year-old border collie, was left unrecognisable after the attack in maghaberry, Co Antrim. She was so badly burned her ribs and other joints were visible through the charred flesh. Cody survived for two weeks but had to be put down when vets concluded she would never fully recover. Judge David mcFarland said it had been an ‘evil, vile and appalling attack which was beyond comprehension to ordinary people’.

solar-powered Dublin: You know about the rain, right? SAND to Arabs, ice to Eskimos, sun to… er, Dubliners? A major project to explore how the capital can harness solar power kicked off in the capital yesterday. The three-week scheme is the result of Dublin City Council’s successful application to participate in the IBM Smarter Cities Challenge. Dublin’s Lord Mayor Christy Burke welcomed a six-member IBM team to Dublin’s Civic Offices yesterday, saying: ‘Advances in technology mean that solar energy is now a real possibility in a city with a climate like Dublin’s. ‘Dublin City Council wanted to examine what role buildings and land that it owns could play in generating and using solar energy. We also wanted to see if the energy we generate could feed into the energy grid.

‘Our successful application to the Smarter Cities Challenge means we can examine this at no cost to the council.’ Dublin is one of 16 cities and regions taking part in this year’s challenge. IBM chose the projects from 100 applicants in March. Over the next three weeks, the council and IBM team will meet interested parties to examine where solar energy could be produced, how it could be harnessed and what uses it could be put to. The team will present a report on October 23. Deirdre Kennedy, Corporate Affairs Manager, IBM Ireland, said Dublin was chosen because ‘of its commitment to the use of data to make better decisions, and for its desire to explore and act on smarter energy solutions’. She added: ‘The stakes have never

Bright ideas: Dublin

been greater but our IBM Smarter Cities Challenge team are excited at the prospect of helping Dublin tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time.’ In its submission, Dublin City Council said it believes that municipally owned property such as libraries, public parks and roof spaces may be suitable for producing solar energy. Advances in solar technology also mean that solar energy has far greater potential now than at any time in the past. Dublin is unsuitable for wind energy due to population and building density. As a result of previous participation, Eindhoven in the Netherlands has reduced crime with strategies that include citizens’ use of social media, and Edmonton in Canada has improved road safety by analysing accident data.

But he said he was at an age where he should no longer be making music anyway, adding: ‘Many composers of classical music died at age 34. And I’m still here, and nobody knows what to do with me. ‘My novel will probably be published next year and, with luck, I will be able to stop singing forever – which would make many people happy.’

The green green gas of home... We may not be suited to wind power, but here are some other ways we think Dublin could produce green power: n Harnessing the wind created by seagulls who have ‘lost the run of themselves’ n Somehow utilising the Irish process of alcohol assimilation (there has to be a better byproduct than a hangover) n Harnessing the static electricity created by the many lycra-clad leg-pumping cyclists. n Converting the sound waves created by students on buses everywhere into power n Turning begrudgery into power – if we could do it in Dublin alone, the whole world could stop burning fossil fuels

Alcohol tax ‘hitting jobs’

MORE than 136,000 people are employed in the hospitality industry here, according to research in the sector. The Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) said that the drinks services sector, which includes bars, restaurants and hotels, is a major source of employment. DIGI has called on the Government to reverse excise on alcohol in the upcoming Budget, stating that it is an unfair tax on small businesses.

One Of the country’s leading think-tanks has claimed Ireland will have one of the fastest growing economies in europe this year. The economic and Social Research Institute (eSRI) has joined a growing number of experts in claiming that the country’s revival in fortunes is hitting stronger and faster than originally thought. It is forecasting gross national product (GnP) – regarded by commentators as a more honest measure of how economic figures are reflected on the ground – will grow by five per cent this year and next. The dramatic revision in its latest quarterly commentary sees the think-tank with an outlook similar to estimates from the Central Bank’s advisers and business and investment brokers in the last week. On gross domestic product (GDP) – which includes the profits of multinationals – the eSRI estimates growth of 4.9 per cent this year and 5.2 per cent next year. It also expects unemployment to fall to 9.6 per cent next year. However, its economic chiefs urged the Government to use any additional taxes, such as money from water charges, to invest in social housing programmes. They said this will help to consolidate economic growth and ease supply and demand issues which are inflating property prices in Dublin. David Duffy, eSRI report author, said: ‘The recovery in Ireland is broad-based and is stronger than previously thought.’

More imported cases in Europe ‘unavoidable’, WHO confirms Central Bank lays out loan restrictions

Nurse caught ebola virus ‘because of shoddy suit’ by DANIEL BINNS THE first case of the ebola virus to be caught in Europe has been blamed on the alleged use of sub-standard protective suits which were partly held together by tape. Staff at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital made the claims after a nurse tested positive for the disease on Monday. The unnamed woman was among dozens of health professionals who treated an ebola patient from Sierra Leone who had come to Spain for treatment. More than 50 people who came into contact with her are being monitored. Three more, including the 40-yearold’s husband, are in quarantine. Her colleagues told Spain’s El País newspaper that staff wore protective gear that fell short of minimum standards, were not ventilated properly and had latex gloves attached by tape. They also said the patient’s waste was removed via a lift used by staff. Hospital officials deny the claims. ‘The costumes are well matched to the protocol and the security meas-

THE Central Bank has proposed restrictions on how much banks can lend to home buyers in a bid to reduce the risk of a new property bubble. With property prices in Dublin rising by 25 percent year-onyear in August, although they were still 41 per cent below their pre-crisis peak, the bank said it was appropriate to bring in limits on new lending at high loan-to-value (LTV) or loan-toincome (LTI) ratios. Central Bank deputy governor Stefan Gerlach said the measures were not aimed at limiting or steering prices but would probably have an impact on the pace of price increases. The measures will require banks to restrict lending above 80 per cent of the value of a home to no more than 15 per cent of the aggregate value of all housing loans. They will also restrict lending above 3.5 times the borrower’s income to no more than 20 per cent of that aggregate value. Banks have until December 8 to respond to the proposals in a consultation paper.

Nobel Prize winners: Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura

Nobel team ‘lit up’ world

Two JaPaNeSe scientists and a Japanese-born american have won the Nobel Prize in physics for inventing blue light-emitting diodes. It is a breakthrough that has spurred the development of LeD technology to light up homes, computer screens and smartphones worldwide. Isamu akasaki, Hiroshi amano and naturalized US citizen Shuji Nakamura revolutionised lighting technology two decades ago when they came up with a long-elusive component for white LeD lights. In countless applications today, they have replaced less efficient incandescent and fluorescent lights. ‘They succeeded where everyone else failed,’ the Nobel committee said. ‘Incandescent light bulbs lit the 20th century; the 21st century will be lit by LeD.’

Red and green light-emitting diodes have been around since the mid-19th century and have been used in applications such as watches and calculators. But scientists had struggled for decades to produce the shorter-wavelength blue LeD needed in combination with the others to produce white light when the three laureates made their breakthroughs in the early 1990s. Their work enabled LeD lights – more efficient and long-lasting than previous light sources – to be used in a range of applications, including street lights, televisions and computers. ‘It is very satisfying to see that my dream of LeD lighting has become a reality,’ Professor Nakamura (60) said.

Noisy snackers Mental health annoy workers hit by cannabis DITCHING smelly food snacks and chewing your food quietly are just two ways to avoid annoying your office colleagues, a survey has revealed. The research, commissioned by snack food group Popchips, found that while some 72 per cent of office workers start their day well-energised they can take up to two snack breaks to ward off hunger pangs. Some 2,000 ‘snackered’ office workers were asked about their habits – and 11.30am and 3pm were found to be the most optimal times for snack breaks.

Cannabis use can become addictive, cause mental health problems and lead to hard drug use, according to a new study. The research, carried out over 20 years by Professor Wayne Hall – a british expert on addiction – found that one in six teenagers who regularly smoke the drug become dependent. it concluded that using the drug while pregnant reduces birth weight, while teenage users do worse at school and are twice as likely to suffer schizophrenia.

‘it is not a scandal. it is a sex crime. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. ‘That’s why these websites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it.’ She also blasted fans who downloaded the snaps. ‘anybody who looked at those pictures, you’re perpetuating a sexual offence. But The Hunger Games actress insisted she is putting the incident behind her. ‘i’m not crying about it any more. i can’t have my happiness rest on these people being caught, because they might not be. i need to just find my own peace.’ But some hard-ofthinking fans were quick to criticise after she posed tastefully topless in a swimming pool for her accompanying Vanity fair shoot.

‘It was the biggest challenge of my career yet,’ says O’Connell about his starring role in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. ‘But at the risk of sounding overconfident, I was ready.’ He plays real-life Louis Zamperini, a former Olympic long-distance runner who enlisted in the US Air Force in World War II and spent two years as a Japanese POW after being shot down over the Pacific. With huge physical demands (such as losing drastic amounts of weight), O’Connell says it

was Jolie who kept him going. ‘Luckily I had someone like Angelina around, who has kind of done it before. Every adversity I was trying to face, she’s done time and time again. ‘In the end, she promised me – and made me promise her – it would [bring out] the best of both of us.’ The role seduced him. ‘It was the opportunity to portray a monumental human being that made the job irresistible,’ says O’Connell. ‘I really think we’re sitting on something special,’ he adds. Oscars ahoy.

o’Connell was born and raised in Derby. His father had moved to england in the mid-Sixties and later met his english mother, Alison. Like his character, o’Connell thought about joining the army when he was 15. ‘There was one stage where it looked like the only feasible way of making an honest living,’ he says. it was either that or football (his grandfather, Ken gutteridge, played pro, while a young o’Connell had trials for Derby County). But when knee injuries put paid to his sporting ambitions, he looked destined for a life in the military. ‘Thankfully, i was too young to sign on the dotted line,’ he reflects. in the nick of time, along came a drama course and a love of acting. By the time he was 16, o’Connell had won a part in Shane meadows’ This is england, followed by roles opposite michaels Caine (Harry Brown) and Fassbender (eden Lake) and, of course, Skins, playing the womanising James Cook. Aside from dating former

X-Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos, he’s kept his love life in the shadows. Dedicated, determined and diverse, he knows exactly what he wants. ‘one day i have every intention of being regarded as one of the best, particularly of my generation,’ he says. Confident? You bet.

But Bake Off is a nervy affair and Richard has stiff opposition from Luis, a master at decorations, and Nancy, who’s nifty with the microwave. Let bun battle commence!

BBC1, 9pm Poor George Mottershead. As if dealing with his zoo animals wasn’t tricky enough, he’s had a shrew of a shopkeeper, a snake of a vicar and a worm at the council offices to contend with. As this sweet series ends, the fate of George’s beloved zoo hangs in the balance – we know the outcome, of course, but it scarcely matters. A second series is a given.

A timely and welcome return to our screens for Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early and Ciaran Murphy, what with autumn rugby internationals and Euro qualifiers looming. This irreverent yet insightful live-audience sports show was a breath of fresh air when it first aired and, like any good idea, couldn’t be kept down. Expect bellylaughs aplenty between chats with the high-profile guests.

Parents are paying to have their out-of-control kids hauled off to tough boot camps for a spot of behaviour correction. ITV2, 10pm The Brownall Jobcentre crew work themselves up into a froth of excitement as they gear up for an MP’s visit by getting in touch with the local youth. There are some guilty cheap laughs at the expense of

Marr’s star still shines as he finds musical redemption in Playland With his second solo effort out now, Hazel Sheffield meets the ascendant Johnny Marr and talks about writing songs and his rock’n’roll legacy

Icon: Johnny Marr has come a long way since The Smiths split in 1987

wHen The Smiths split in 1987, Johnny Marr was just 23 – but he’s packed a lot in since then. Most of it has been in the shadow of other frontmen – from new order’s Bernard Sumner in electronic, to wakefield’s brattiest brothers in The Cribs. He’s written and played with everyone from oasis to Pet Shop Boys. Yet perhaps his least likely appearance was at the premiere for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in April, when Marr performed his soundtrack to the film in an iconic new York post office with none other than Pharrell williams and a leather-clad Alicia keys. At 50, Marr has been teetotal and vegan for years, the ragged black mop

of hair of his youth tamed into a sleek mod feathercut. The man nMe magazine declared a ‘godlike genius’ last year is sharper than ever. So sharp, in fact, that he’s come back from releasing his first proper solo album, The Messenger in 2013, with another album, Playland, barely a year later. I catch him between rehearsals in his country studio outside Manchester to fter a lifefind out how, after time playing in other people’s bands, Marr’s finally oice. found his own voice. ‘I had ideas for songs,’ he says. ‘A lot of Playland is ving influenced by having the sound of the crowd and the band ringing in my ears. True story of how bravery triumphed over adversity Filmmaker Ross Whitaker talks to Luke Holohan about his remarkable documentary, Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock Story, and its message of hope

A

s a blind adventure athlete, down-born Mark Pollock has triumphed in some of the most extreme climates imaginable. but it was in the seemingly benign setting of an Oxfordshire home in 2010 that a tragic fall changed his life forever. in the heartbreaking and inspiring documentary Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock story, director Ross Whitaker (When ali Came To ireland, saviours) charts Pollock’s most arduous journey yet: learning to walk again. Having lost his sight aged 22 as a result of retinal detachment, Pollock went on to defy naysayers by becoming an awardwinning athlete. at the 2002 Commonwealth Games he claimed silver and gold medals in rowing. a year later he completed six marathons in the Gobi desert. Visits to Mount Everest and a race to the south Pole followed, and did little to quell his competitive streak. Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock story is certainly an intimate retelling of unspeakable tragedy. it takes viewers to Mark’s bedside in a spinal hospital where he is visibly broken, before eventually

finding hope at the frontiers of medical innovation. ‘in a way the film starts almost from the beginning of his life,’ says Whitaker. ‘it tells the story of Mark before his accident, taking us from the build-up to his south Pole adventure, when he became the first blind man to make it there. Then beyond that it is about him having this terrible fall in 2010, which broke his back, and follows the next four years as he rebuilds his identity for the second time.’ as a friend of Mark and his fiancé simone, the filmmaker says that it was a tacit sense of trust that meant he could shadow the pair for over four years. ‘The knowledge that i’d be sensitive to the story allowed Mark and simone to be comfortable to the point that we kind of forgot that i was filming,’ he says. it’s often through communicating to others that we can make sense of our own experiences. and, according to Whitaker, what initially began as a documentary detailing Mark’s successes, quickly morphed into a project that has not only allowed him to contribute to finding a cure for paralysis but also express an inspiring message of perseverance.

Whitaker agrees that to a certain degree the film enabled Mark to ‘remind people that i exist and that i have value’. but it’s also about ‘making a difference’ and shining a spotlight on a condition that affects millions of people around the world. despite its poignant narrative, the

audience’s attention is likely to be peaked as much by the film’s overarching insight into paralysis treatment as by Mark’s rehabilitation. Whitaker says: ‘When Mark was able to bring together scientists from UCla and robotics experts from berkeley California and san Francisco... when he

was doing the things that he had been talking about... that was hugely uplifting.’ by virtue of the film’s subject it was a difficult project to broach, not least because it meant contextualising a friend’s terrible ordeal whilst questioning, through all the hardships, whether the documentary was something that they should continue to do. ‘but Mark was very positive about doing it and saw it as an initial thing to focus on. There was a moment after his accident where i said that i really don’t want to do this. i thought it was too much, too tough. There were moments where we didn’t know whether he would live or die,’ Whitaker admits. ‘Making the decision to do it was probably the most challenging part. You know that you are going to be involved in some very tough parts in someone’s life. There is a scene when Mark and simone are trying out a wheelchair for the first time – the first step in rebuilding his life – and i find it very hard to watch. it’s extremely emotional and i’ve broken down a few times watching it.’ last Friday people crowded into the light House Cinema in dublin for an emotional debut screening and the team behind the production will now embark on a promotional tour throughout ireland. For now the film will have a limited run, however, there is hope that with a universal theme of strength and positivity it will be able to transcend an irish audience.

Steps to aid mental health WOrld Mental Health day is celebrated worldwide this Friday with the aim of encouraging individuals, in whatever walk of life, to protect their mental health and well-being, with recourse to five simple steps. Mental health is how you think and feel about yourself. It is also how you cope when times get tough. Problems will range from general everyday worries to serious long-term conditions, all of which affect your wellbeing – the state of being comfortable, healthy and happy. Modern life is becoming increasingly hectic and we need to ‘plan to protect our mental health & wellbeing’. Here are five ways to improve your wellbeing:

1. connect

do you connect with people around you? Family, friends,

3. take Notice

Are you aware of the world around you: sights, smells, sounds, temperature? do you take time to notice how you are feeling? do you savour the moment?

4. Keep learning

When was the last time you tried something new? Have you set yourself a challenge or a new task recently?

Stress: Take time for yourself colleagues, neighbours? At home, work, school, in your local community?

2. be Active

do you exercise? do you get outside, go for walks, potter in the garden? Have a sustainable pattern of doing more rather than being inactive.

5. Give

do you see yourself and your happiness in relation to the wider community? Have you tried volunteering? When did you last do something nice for a relative, friend or stranger?

Bianchi ‘critical but stable’ after suzuka crash remove adrian sutil’s crashed sauber during sunday’s race. a spokesman at the suzuka circuit said the crash was down to bad luck rather than poor judgment by those in charge. ‘Officials raised double yellow flags after the accident by sutil, which means drivers had to slow down to the speed that they can immediately stop, but unfortunately Bianchi’s car aquaplaned right at the time and ran into the accident site, which was bad luck,’ said Masamichi Miyazaki. ‘admittedly, rain was coming and the road was wet, but not heavy enough to halt the race.’ Jean Todt, president of the sport’s governing body the Fia, has asked race director charlie Whiting to carry out a detailed report into the accident before sunday’s Russian Grand Prix in sochi.

pressure rises on Harry as Les comes home LES FERDINAND has been appointed head of football operations at QPR amid continuing speculation over manager Harry Redknapp’s future. The 47-year-old was unveiled at Loftus Road yesterday as he returned to the club for whom he scored 80 goals in 163 games between 1987 and 1995. The club said in a statement Ferdinand would have ‘a coaching presence at all levels’ and would ‘provide a direct link between the footballing side of the business and the board of directors’. The former England striker said: ‘It’s incredible to be back here. This club holds a special place in my heart.’ Rangers owner

Tony Fernandes declared: ‘Football has changed considerably in recent years and I firmly believe there is a role at every football club for this kind of position.’ The move would appear to put further pressure on Redknapp, whose struggling side sit bottom of the Premier League after last Sunday’s loss at West Ham, with just one win this season. Redknapp was yesterday installed as the new 4/7 favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave his post. A flurry of bets were placed on the ex-Spurs boss, who had been a 12/1 outsider to be the next top-flight manager to be axed before the 2-0 defeat at Upton Park.

Ulster says ‘Les’ as Kiss to take up director job

by DAnny HOGAn LES KISS will leave the Ireland set-up after Rugby World Cup 2015 to become Ulster’s full-time director of rugby, it has emerged. Ulster and the IRFU announced Neil Doak as the province’s new head coach, while also revealing that Kiss will depart boss Joe Schmidt’s national coaching team after the 2015 tournament. The Australian former rugby league star has held Ulster’s interim director role this term following David Humphreys’ late-summer departure for Gloucester. The 49-year-old will leave Ulster to focus on Ireland duties on October 13, before returning in November 2015, while Doak will remain as head coach. Former dual-sport rugby and cricket international Doak has now been confirmed as Ulster’s permanent replacement for Mark Anscombe, who was released in the summer. Ireland head coach Schmidt tipped Kiss to make a big future at Ulster, while keeping focus on next months’ Autumn internationals. ‘Les is tremendous value and his integrity, coaching ability and Doak: New head coach positivity will add definite value to Ulster in the long term,’ said Schmidt. ‘But, like the rest of the National coaching team, we are both very much focused on the upcoming Guinness Series. ‘Beyond that there are plenty of challenges leading up to Six Nations and Rugby World Cup 2015.’ Kiss echoed the Ireland gaffer’s concerns. ‘I am very appreciative of the continued faith the IRFU and Ulster Rugby have demonstrated in me and, while I’m delighted to get the security in the long term, I am very much focused first and foremost on the next 12 months,’ said Kiss. ‘It’s exciting that the Springboks arrive here in just over three weeks and that the Guinness Series is almost upon us.’

O’neill calls in Lenihan as squad hit by injuries by pARAic MORgAn Uncapped Hull defender Brian Lenihan has been called up by the Republic of Ireland for the euro 2016 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Germany, with injuries having taken their toll on Martin O’neill’s squad. The 20-year-old full-back met up with the Ireland party at their base in portmarnock last night and will train with his team-mates this morning, with Seamus coleman having joined everton colleague James Mccarthy and aston Villa keeper Shay Given on the injured list. coleman has been nursing a hamstring problem for several weeks, while club boss Roberto Martinez has indicated that midfielder Mccarthy needs rest as he battles a thigh injury. Given is struggling with a hip problem and O’neill has effectively written off the trio’s chances of being involved against either Gibraltar in dublin on Saturday evening or Germany in Gelsenkirchen three days later. He said: ‘I haven’t spoken to Roberto Martinez, but I had a word with Seamus and James. There was talk about James being available, or trying to be available, for last Sunday’s game against Manchester United, but I think that was a long shot.

BOSS Gareth Southgate thinks Raheem Sterling has bigger priorities than playing for his England Under-21s side in Friday’s Euro 2015 play-off with Croatia. Stuart Pearce this week named Sterling as the sort of player who his successor should be able to call on as England look to reach next summer’s finals in Croatia. But Southgate said: ‘While you always want the best players available, sometimes I don’t think it is the right challenge for the individual. He’s pretty much a first-choice for the senior team.’

‘at the moment, you would say that there is no chance of them being available.’ asked about Given, O’neill said: ‘He’s picked up a hip injury that needs some sort of attention, and he thinks now might be the best time to get it done, to get it sorted out. It’s been bothering him for a little while. ‘We talked it over ourselves and thought maybe this might be the best chance so that he is clear, just in case anything happens to him in the next couple of months at club level, for instance if he did go out on loan or something like that, that he would be absolutely right for it.’ The remaining 25 members of the squad trained in Malahide yesterday morning with Lenihan due to boost their ranks. O’neill, who admitted he had not seen much of the Under-21 international, said: ‘We are going to bring up young Brian Lenihan at Hull because we don’t have any natural right-back in the team at the moment, so he will come in later on today and train with us tomorrow. ‘I was speaking to some of the lads here at Hull, who said he has settled in well, and of course he is delighted to be coming.’

Six-month racism ban for Italy chief ITALIAn Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio has landed a six-month ban from Uefa for making alleged racist comments. The 71-year-old drew criticism during his election campaign by making a remark about ‘eating bananas’ when discussing foreign players. He later apologised but Uefa and Fifa investigated and Europe’s governing body has now said Tavecchio will be ‘ineligible for any position as a Uefa official for six months’.

Change of heart: Gill

LORD COE has written off hopes of a British men’s team playing at the Rio 2016 Olympics but believes a women’s team could yet take part. Despite opposition from the Irish, Scottish and Welsh football associations, who feared participation could put their individual status within Fifa at risk, Ryan Giggs, Daniel Sturridge and Aaron Ramsey (pictured) helped the men into the London 2012 quarter-finals before defeat to South Korea on penalties. The women lost to Canada at the same stage. And Coe, chairman of the British Olympic Association, said: ‘With women’s, we’ve still got some discussions. With the men, I’m not sure I have the will to live through that process again.’

team ‘will not be distracted’

Martin O’neill has insisted the furore surrounding the launch of assistant roy Keane’s updated autobiography will not distract the republic of ireland from their euro 2016 mission. the ireland boss met the media in Malahide yesterday after he and Keane had put the players through their paces for the first time since they met up ahead of the qualifiers against Gibraltar and Germany. However, they did so with the younger man once again making the headlines after copies of his book the Second Half were mistakenly put on sale briefly on Monday ahead of tomorrow’s official launch.

‘The book is there but doesn’t matter’ But if Keane’s differences with former Manchester United manager alex Ferguson, his decision to turn down the job as Celtic manager and a clash with onetime team-mate Peter Schmeichel were among the topics dominating the sports news agenda, O’neill was refusing to be side-tracked. He said: ‘the most important issue here are our games, and Saturday [the match against Gibraltar] is really,

by sAM cOsTELLO really important. We have come off the back of a great win against Georgia and it’s important to focus on that. ‘Whatever headline... let’s just say we came here and there hadn’t been a book – there would have been something else, seriously. ‘He [Keane] would have slipped down there on the field and we’d have been talking about that, maybe broken his leg or something like that. there would have been something. ‘i genuinely don’t know what the headlines are in the book. it obviously was going to cause some sort of furore at some stage, the very fact he put his name to this book would suggest that it’s exactly what would happen. it’s there and it doesn’t matter. the games are the most important things for us.’ asked if he had discussed the book with Keane in advance, O’neill said: ‘i thought about it at one stage or another but then, why? He’s over 21 – i think – and he should be capable of dealing with his own stuff.’ O’neill, who asked Keane to join him in the republic set-up when he was appointed in november last year, has had to become used to the focus his assistant attracts.
