Plea for aid over ‘evil ebola virus’

The presidenTs of three ebola-stricken West African nations have sought an immediate outpouring of money, doctors and hospital beds as representatives of nations gathered at a World Bank meeting promised to send more aid. ‘Our people are dying,’ said president ernest Bai Koroma, speaking by video link from sierra Leone to an ebola summit at the annual meeting of the international Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington. he described the devastating effects of ‘this

evil virus’ – children made orphans, doctors and nurses killed, and an overwhelmed medical system that cannot keep up with the need. The world’s response has not kept pace with the spread of ebola, Mr Koroma said, and ‘a tragedy unforeseen in modern times’ is threatening everyone. United nations secretary-general Ban KiMoon called for a 20-fold surge in international

aid to fight ebola. ‘For those who have yet to pledge, i say please do so soon. This is an unforgiving disease.’ At the meeting, president Alpha Conde of Guinea made an urgent plea for money, supplies and medicine. ‘Our countries are in a very fragile situation,’ Mr Conde said. World Bank president Jim Yong Kim endorsed pledges from the Us and Un to guarantee medical evacuations for healthcare workers responding to the crisis, an effort to ensure that enough

doctors and nurses are willing to risk their lives to help stop the disease. he said: ‘Trying to block your borders or isolate those countries in some way is not going to work.’ A World Bank report this week estimated that the economic toll of the largest ebola outbreak in history could reach €25billion if the disease continues to spread in West Africa.

Daisy and Matt’s naked selfies are leaked by hackers by jEnni McknigHT IT’S a case of Doctor Woo-Hoo for Matt Smith after the former time lord and his ex-girlfriend Daisy Lowe became the latest stars to have nude selfies leaked online. The 31-year-old former Time Lord and the Agent Provocateur and Playboy model, 2 , are in a number of naked snaps doing the rounds. At least 18 private photos of the former flames have been stolen, making Smith the second male celebrity to fall victim to such a leak, following wrestler Hulk Hogan’s son, Nick. In 2013 Smith and Lowe finally called it quits on their on-off three year relationship. Smith is now dating Downton Abbey star Lily James, while Lowe is thought to be single after being linked with One Direction’s Harry Styles. The pair are the latest in an evergrowing list of stars to have their risqué selfies posted online since August, including Jennifer Lawrence, Cara Delevingne and Kim Kardashian. Rita Ora is believed to be the next celebrity in for a shock after a US web-

So, who ya gonna call? Girlbusters

After years of rumours, there are finally plans for a new Ghostbusters film – and it will be led by an allfemale cast. Bridesmaids filmmaker Paul feig has said that he will direct a reboot of the classic ghost-fighting comedy franchise starring, as he said on twitter, ‘hilarious women’. feig will direct the film for Sony Pictures, with the Heat screenwriter Katie Dippold writing the script. A sequel with the original cast – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold ramis with Ivan reitman directing – was in development for years. But that never got off the ground and ramis died in february. Casting has yet to be announced, but Melissa McCarthy would be a good bet. feig has made three films in a row with McCarthy, including the upcoming Spy.

‘Newbies’ in running to rock the hall of fame SINGER Sting and The Smiths are among the first-time nominees for enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are among six of the 15 nominees to be on the ballot for the first time. Other first-time nominees are punk trio Green Day, Lean On Me singer Bill Withers, abrasive rockers Nine Inch Nails and the late blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan. Sting, 63, is already in the rock hall as a member of his band The Police. The Smiths, led by singer Morrissey (pictured), had a run of classic tunes in the 1980s. Morrissey – who this week revealed he was battling cancer – went on to enjoy a successful solo career.

Krzysztof Wojciechowski, director of the Collegium Polonicum in Slubice, said he is in awe of the huge and reliable job done by Wikipedia, which is vastly popular in Poland. More than one million entries in Wikipedia are in Polish, rivaling the number in French or Spanish. ‘I’m ready to drop to my knees before Wikipedia, that’s why I thought of a monument where I could do it,’ Wojciechowski told The Associated Press. The €11,000 fibre and resin statue is funded by Slubice authorities and will be unveiled on October 22.

Siptu call to reverse Vat ‘nonsensical’ SIPTU’s call for the Government to withdraw the nine per cent Vat on the hospitality sector has been dubbed ‘outrageous’ by hospitality groups. The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) said the proposal to reverse the rate to 13.5 per cent in the budget was ‘nonsensical’. ‘Siptu have once again proved their removal from reality with their typical anti-job creation rhetoric,’ said Chief Executive of the RAI Adrian Cummins. Siptu claims employers have not passed on the cut to customers, employees or the Exchequer, and want it reversed unless employers take part in a Joint Labour Committee.

LinkedIn may ‘double’ Irish workforce PROFESSIOnAL networking giant Linkedln could double its Irish workforce in the next year following plans to build a new headquarters in Dublin. The company’s new 18,580sqm site at Wilton Place in Dublin 2 was announced as the tech firm was named among the leading employers in the sector. Currently, it employs 600 people in Dublin, having increased this number by 150 over the past ten months, but believes it could see its current workforce grow to 1,200. Both Facebook and Twitter are also currently believed to be in negotiations to develop larger Dublin offices.

Those at risk urged to get flu vaccine Up to 1,000 people could die in Ireland from flu over the coming months, health chiefs have warned. people at risk from the effects of the seasonal infection – including the elderly and chronically ill – have been urged to get vaccinated. this also includes pregnant women, residents in care homes and healthcare workers. Health Minister Leo Varadkar added his voice to calls for particularly vulnerable groups to get the jab. ‘I have seen at first hand the effect that influenza can have on vulnerable people, especially the elderly and people with chronic diseases,’ he said. ‘this year, I particularly want to remind health care professionals of their duty to protect themselves and their

patients by getting immunised. ‘We can all do a much better job to get a much better uptake among the people who deal with our vulnerable patients every day.’ An ongoing study begun last year shows 200 to 500 people die from the virus in Ireland each winter. However, the initial findings of the European-wide research also warns the death toll could rise to as

‘200-500 die from the virus in Ireland yearly’ much as 1,000 in a severe season. the HSE called the vaccine a ‘lifesaver’. But despite this, Brenda Corcoran, head of the National Immunisation office, said particularly vulnerable people put

themselves at risk of serious illness or death every year by not getting vaccinated. ‘the flu vaccine cannot give you the flu as it does not contain any live flu virus, and all those at risk should get vaccinated as soon as possible this year to make sure that they are protected,’ she added. Indications so far suggest nearly six in ten of those aged 65 and over who hold a medical card or Gp visit card received the flu vaccine during the 2013-2014 flu season. Yet the number of people getting the vaccine in Ireland is still below international targets. the HSE said those vaccinated last year need to get the jab again this year as the virus strains have changed. It is free for those with a medical card or Gp visit card.

Ebola nurse ‘on a ventilator’ as health worsens THE health of a Spanish nurse who became the first person to catch ebola outside Africa has deteriorated, her family revealed last night. Teresa Romero, who was admitted to a Madrid hospital on Wednesday with a mild fever, is now suffering from breathing difficulties, according to her brother José. Local reports also suggested the 44-year-old was on a ventilator. Ms Romero was one of 30 medical staff at the Carlos III hospital caring for two missionaries who were flown to Spain for treatment but later died. Six people who have been in close contact with the nurse, including her husband, are now under observation amid fears they could have contracted the disease. Spanish hospital authorities insist all safety protocols were followed

Dr Juan Parra said he had been given a protective suit which was too small, adding: ‘At all times, the sleeves were too short’. He is one of three health workers who have voluntarily quarantined themselves. More than 80 others linked to Ms Romero are under observation. Meanwhile, a row has broken out over what exactly happened when she first went to a clinic claiming she had symptoms of the disease. The nurse said she was sent home with painkillers but sources at the centre say she failed to re-

The Government has come under fire for its plan to hold an emergency Joint Oireachtas Committee meeting on ebola six days from now as Britain announced plans to screen passengers arriving at heathrow and Gatwick airports and eurostar terminals. It comes as the US unveiled extra airport screening after the death of the first patient diagnosed with the deadly virus in America. Members of Joint Oireachtas committee said the Cabinet now ‘needed to outline its plans to prevent the ebola outbreak spreading to Ireland’. ‘None of us know why the meeting isn’t taking place sooner,’ said Fianna Fáil’s Robert Troy. ‘The Cabinet has met and we’ve been told by the Minister for Defence that plans are in place if someone presents at an Irish airport with symptoms. I would like to know what these plans are and I am sure the public would too.’ An Oireachtas spokesperson told Metro herald the meeting was ‘being held at the earliest possible date’.

eVen the least narcissistic among us will have taken, or at least been involved in a selfie and now a smartphone maker believes it has invented the ultimate self-shooter. With a 13 megapixel front-facing camera, Htc’s Desire eYe has a higher spec than the offerings of rivals Apple and Samsung. For gimmick lovers, ordering the taiwanese creation to take a snap with the words ‘say cheese’ will certainly prove an attraction, while budding filmmakers will be able to start work on their latest movie using the commands ‘action’ or ‘rolling’. Revealing the new model at an event in new York yesterday, Htc’s ceO Peter chou (pictured) said: ‘Htc is once again changing the way that people think about technology. ‘Back in 1997, we allowed people to leave their laptops at home in favour of powerful, pocket-sized smartphone computing. Alongside its new smartphone, the taiwanese giant also introduced a 16megapixel handheld camera called the Re, which automatically turns on when it is picked up. Designed like a periscope and compatible with Android and iPhones, the Re is being billed as a rival to action cameras such as the GoPro and will cost about €153 in the US. Head of Htc America, Jason MacKenzie, said: ‘it’s made for spontaneity and simplicity. it also comes waterproof right out of the box.’

Diabetes treatment hope Celeb’s book is banned to protect son ScientiStS believe they have made a ‘giant leap forward’ in the quest to find an effective treatment for type 1 diabetes. Using human embryonic stem cells as a starting point, experts have for the first time been able to produce human insulin-producing beta cells equivalent in almost every way to normally functioning beta cells in the kind of massive quantities needed for cell transplantation and pharmaceutical purposes. Doug Melton, Xander University

Professor at Harvard University, who led the work, said he hopes to have human transplantation trials using the cells under way in a few years. the stem cell-derived beta cells are presently undergoing trials in animal models, including primates. Professor Melton, who is also co-director of the Harvard Stem cell institute, said the device being tested has so far protected beta cells implanted in mice from immune attack for many months.

A UK CELEBRITy has been banned from publishing his autobiography because its graphic claims of sex abuse could deeply disturb his son. The performing artist was told the vivid allegations might cause the boy, who has Asperger’s, to harm himself. The Court of Appeal case has put the right to freedom of expression in conflict with rights of children. Lady Justice Arden said she was concerned the boy’s reaction to the abuse his father says he suffered at

school would be ‘unpredictable’. She accepted there was a public interest in the claims of the father, who cannot be named, but added: ‘If this boy sees any material part of the work, he is likely to want to know more and to suffer grave harm. ‘He will be a vulnerable person for many years to come and, once the material is on the internet, then it cannot be recovered. If publication is not restrained, then it will be impossible to put the genie back in the bottle,’ she said.

The boy, who also has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyspraxia, lives abroad with his mother, who is separated from his father. He was said to be proud of his father, who is in regular contact with him via Skype and who has dedicated the autobiography to him. The UK appeal court issued a temporary injunction on the book in its current form. Lady Justice Arden said restrictions on content should be no more than is necessary to protect the boy’s welfare.

ALL THE BOYS THOUGHT ABOUT CALLING IT A DAY MArk OWeN has admitted that every member of Take That considered quitting the band during a year of crisis. But he said the group – which was hit by tax avoidance headlines and Jason Orange’s indecision about his future – decided making music was the only way out. ‘I think we’ve all, during this last year for many different reasons, hit places where we went “are we doing the right thing? Is this the right thing for us to do as a band?”’ Owen said. ‘So there has been lots going on around us. But making a record is kind of our comfort zone we’ve known since 17/18 years old. ‘That’s the bit where we can go, “I know what I am doing here”.’ As for the ultimate curtain call for Take That, the 42-year-old promised fans it would be a very long goodbye. ‘I think we would need to prepare ourselves [if we split],’ he said. ‘It would be too much of a shock to our system if it happened now. ‘We need to give ourselves at least three or five years’ notice to prepare. We need to wind down and do it properly. It can’t be a quick cut off.’

ary Barlow insists there was no bitter split when Jason orange walked out of the band. He said he understood orange’s reasons for leaving. ‘It’s not something that has been acrimonious, which is great and how it should end,’ the 43-year-old added. ‘He wants a change in his life – from what I got – I don’t want to speak for him but I just felt his heart’s not in music any more.’ Barlow admitted the band had no alternative but to give orange a deadline as he had stalled their music progress. ‘It’s been a lot to figure out for us because we sort of started the record and we said to Jay: “we know you’ve not made your mind up, we’re going to start this record and hopefully you are going to join us.” we’ve been promising our audiences a record for four years now. So we went off and did our thing. ‘we kept putting off and delaying telling people to give Jay more of a chance to change his mind really. ‘we came to the point where we’d left this hole on the record and thought we’ve got to make a decision.’

live in the country, and two years ago we had mains installed along with water meters at the same time. The road next to me had these installed a year ago. We only recently found out that you can check how much water you have used. What a shock it was when we checked. Our area has a mixture of people but the usage ranged from 50,000l a year to 190,000l. The shocking thing is that the people who used 50k were two pensioners living on their own, with occasional family visiting. They have no dishwasher, and, as you can imagine, there is minimum use of a washing machine and toilets. They have showers, not baths, and there are no leaks for the water as we checked. So i am questioning where the Government got this figure of a free allowance of 30k from? is this

just pure guesswork? Because looking at our area, it seems that the Government have under-calculated the usage. Unless of course this is deliberate so they can rake in millions. But i am sure this Government would not stoop so low... But for you to equate a dog to a human child is beyond belief. Animals should not be given the same justice as humans. That is pure ridiculousness. When we were younger, my friend had pet hamsters. When they ‘died’, he buried them in the garden. it wasn’t until four hamsters later that he found out that they were hibernating. Should i call the gardaí and have him done for mass

Smiling ‘martyr’ aged 10 A TEN-YEAR-OLD boy ‘martyr’ is thought to have died fighting for Islamic State in a coalition air strike on extremists in Syria. A chilling video tribute to the boy, named as Abu Ubaidah, has been posted on Islamist websites. Describing him as ‘Islamic State’s youngest jihadist’, it was filmed shortly before his death and shows the smiling child dressed in camouflage gear and struggling under the weight of a machine gun. A tweet posted on Tuesday claimed the boy was ‘martyred with his father by US air strikes two weeks ago’, but does not specify exactly where or when. Other websites claim he had travelled to the war zone from the Arabian peninsula alongside his father, a man given the name ‘Baghdadi’.

The video shows the boy emerging with three bearded and heavily-armed jihadis from the back of a Fujitsu 4x4 on a featureless grassy plain. It then cuts to an interior shot of a machine gun loaded with an ammunition belt, and the boy trying to hoist it on to his shoulder. He poses in military fatigues next to a makeshift armoured vehicle and looks through a telephoto lens before the video slowly dissolves to a crude representation of paradise. The video is likely to focus attention on the children involved in the conflict and the terrorists’ success in luring young people to the war zone. But defence lawyer Francois van Zyl said Mbolombo ‘knew much more’. Qwabe said: ‘He knew what was happening but he was the link man.’ Prosecutors allege that Mr Dewani, from Bristol, England, arranged for the carjacking in order to get out of his marriage. He denies murder, conspiracy to kidnap, robbery, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. The trial continues.

‘I’m submissive, filthyminded and perverted’

SHRIEN DEWANI described himself as ‘submissive, filthy-minded and perverted’ on gay websites, a SouthAfrican court heard yesterday. The 34-year-old visited Gaydar as ‘asiansubguy’ to look for partners aged from 18 to 99 for ‘1-on-1 sex, group sex or other activities’, papers suggest. Records show he signed on a fortnight after he married Anni Dewani, 28, and looked at fetish website Recon the day before her death in Cape Town and two days afterwards. The millionaire businessman, accused of having his wife murdered in a staged carjacking, deactivated his account after she was killed in November 2010. A British-based escort who met Mr Dewani through the website is expected to give evidence to the trial next week. Leopold Leisser told police Mr Dewani liked to be physically and verbally abused with fetish paraphernalia and raciallyinsulting names. Meanwhile, the court heard a hitman convicted of killing Anni said a fixer given immunity by investigators was aware of the plot to kill her. WESTERN powers could defeat Islamic State fighters in six months if they put ‘boots on the ground’, according to Britain’s former military chief. Both Britain and the US have repeatedly ruled out sending troops to Syria and Iraq but David Richards said it could reduce the length of the war. ‘If Western boots were on the ground, if Western armies were to be applied to the problem, it could be over in six months.’ He claimed it was ‘naive’ to leave the fight to Kurdish troops and Syrian rebels and said British Prime Minister David Cameron’s pledge to ‘destroy’ IS was ‘unwise’. He added: ‘It’s very hard to destroy an idea. But I think you can defeat it.’ Meanwhile, Islamic State (IS) fighters seized more than a third of the besieged city of Kobane yesterday, as Turkey resisted intense US pressure to send in its troops. Turkish tanks remain parked on the border overlooking the city. Turkey’s foreign minister insisted that pleas from the alliance to save the city were not realistic. ‘Once there is a common decision, Turkey will not hold back from playing its part,’ he said.

Pro-gay vote ‘is a message to Russia’

ESTONIA: Gay partnerships are to be legally recognised by the state following a narrow vote in parliament. The law was passed yesterday by 40 votes to 38, making Estonia the first former Soviet republic to legalise samesex unions. The Estonian Human Rights Centre hailed the decision as ‘historic’, saying it would send a strong message to neighbouring Russia, which passed what it called ‘a draconian anti-gay law’ last year. The new legislation will come into force in 2016.

Riots fear as second teen shot by police AMERICA: Protesters have blocked streets in St Louis after a white policeman shot and killed a black teenager near the flashpoint suburb of Ferguson. Police said the officer was chasing 18-year-old Vonderrick Myers Jr when the suspect fired three times at him. The officer returned fire 17 times, fatally wounding Myers. The shooting on Wednesday triggered fears of riots in the city, just miles from where black teenager Michael Brown was shot dead in August.

The rare big cat, which is fitted with a tracker, may be at risk of getting shot by farmers after crossing the border into Heilongjiang province. Officials said they would protect the animal, which was yesterday roaming in a national park.

and finally... RuSSIA: It’s unlikely that Barack Obama will ever get caught short in Shchyolkovo but if he does he could find it uncomfortable. The city has banned the US president and Congress from using its public toilets to show how ‘p**d off’ they are with US sanctions over the Crimea crisis.

2 The Graham Norton Show Graham grills a motley crew tonight

1. Big school BBC1, 9.30pm

If this classroom sitcom was a maths lesson it would add up to less than the sum of its parts – but at least this second series signs off with frustrated Mr Church (David Walliams) and coy Miss Postern (Catherine Tate) edging their relationship forward. By rowing lots. Will it be back for another term? Are we bothered?

Veteran singer-songwriter Neil Diamond completes the general air of oddness.

RTÉ2, 9pm The breadth of Matt Damon’s talents were revealed in this slick and smart actioner from Paul Greengrass about a super-spy found floating in the sea with amnesia. As his abilities start to become clear to him, so too does the feeling that he is a pawn in the hands of shady officials.

So chef’s hats off to Mr Kerridge as he throws caution to the winds and reinvents a favourite.

ALsO OuT The Calling (15A)

Talented cast: Imprisoned in a makeshift camp, a group of boys battle for survival in an intriguing adventure that will leave you wanting more

Susan Sarandon makes for a great grouchy cop in this thriller about a serial killer plaguing a remote area of Canada. Donald Sutherland also appears in the police procedural that blends cynical humour with an increasingly fantastical plot.

effie gray (12A)

Emma Thompson penned this slow-moving period drama exploring the difficult relationship between art critic John Ruskin and his young wife, Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning). Thompson’s own husband, Greg Wise, plays the man who is far more interested in his work than his increasingly frustrated wife.

The rewriTe (12A)

Hugh Grant returns to romantic comedies once again, this time playing a divorced screenwriter who starts teaching a university course filled with attractive young students. Marisa Tomei is the more mature love interest while Marc Lawrence (Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice) directs.

The trappings of youth

T

his youthful sci-fi has an intriguing premise: A group of boys live together in a makeshift camp. A huge wall stands between them and the rest of the world, opening to reveal a mechanical maze. These young men have no idea how they got there, never mind how to get out: the maze could shift and trap them at any moment. Periodically, more boys are delivered via an underground lift, along with supplies.

An entertaining sci-fi adventure with a talented young cast, The Maze Runner isn’t as spectacular as The Hunger Games but it’s a strong new entry in the Young Adult adaptation genre.

THE Big RELEAsE

The Maze runner (12A) HHHH✩ Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) is the newest arrival and must prove his worth to sceptical self-made leaders like Gally (Will Poulter). summoning his bravery, Thomas ends up dashing into the maze, where potentially deadly foes await. Based on James Dashner’s book, this offers up plenty of mystery for fans of series like Lost. it also has strong turns from its central cast, carefully chosen for Young Adult appeal: O’Brien is already a heartthrob, thanks to MTV’s Teen Wolf, and his co-stars include Thomas Brodie-sangster (Love Actually) and skins’ Kaya scodelario

as Teresa, the first girl to appear. somewhat unrealistically, hormone levels fail to rage on Teresa’s arrival and scodelario doesn’t have much opportunity to make an impact in this first film, though we’re told her role will escalate in the sequel. This is more about the boys’ bonding, the scares, the intrigue and the survival efforts of our likeable young hero. There’s a touching friendship between Thomas and Chuck (Blake Cooper), who dreams of meeting the parents he doesn’t remember. And as the dynamic within the camp shifts, it has something to say about group psychology. The Maze Runner is the first of several movies based on a series, so it doesn’t offer a particularly satisfying conclusion. But it’s intriguing enough to leave you wanting more. Anna smith

Lost soldier finds Trouble on streets ’71 (15A) HHHH✩ JACK O’CONNELL continues his starry ascent with this involving thriller about a British soldier abandoned on the streets of Belfast in 1971. When locals violently clash with his unit, Gary is shocked by his first day on the job. But when the guys flee and unwittingly leave him there, things get far worse. This is the height of the Troubles and many in the North see British soldiers as the enemy. Gary must decide who to trust. He dodges around the streets, befriending a young boy and nursing his injuries while trying to figure out how to get back to base. O’Connell is terrific as the smart

Terrific: Jack O’Connell as Gary in ‘71

but shell-shocked everyman, while the intense, close-up camerawork takes us right into the heart of the action. This has a rapid, slightly panicky feel – you can almost hear Gary’s heart beating faster. While dialogue is economical, it’s effective: every word sheds light on both plot and character. There’s also top-notch support from Love/Hate stars Charlie Murphy, as a Catholic woman who takes sympathy on Gary, and Killian Scott as a militant Republican trying to hunt him down. This thought-provoking film tackles familiar themes with a fresh approach, making its impact all the more heart-breaking. You’re left with a sad reminder of how a conflict can cheapen life and how a split-second decision can end it.

Enjoyable tribute to 1970s horror that slowly builds from slight frights to hide-behind-your-hands moments. It feels smaller and more focused than The Conjuring, not least because the action is set around a small flat rather than a big spooky house.

Lego will not renew its promotional contract with Shell, the toy company has said, after it was targeted by environmental campaigners who oppose the oil giant’s plans to drill in the Arctic. More than a million people signed a petition calling on Lego to stop promoting Shell because of its plans to drill for oil in the polar region, during a three-month campaign by greenpeace. greenpeace also staged a series of tiny protests with Lego figures outside Shell garages and national landmarks in a bid to get the Danish company to end its 50-year association with the oil firm. In a statement, Lego group president and chief executive Jorgen Vig Knudstorp said the company did not agree with greenpeace’s tactics and the brand should not have become part of the green group’s dispute with Shell. But he said Lego would not be renewing its promotional contract with Shell, which currently allows children in many parts of the world to collect sets such as Lego racing cars

dren, and we will honour it – as we would with any contract we enter.’ But he added: ‘We continuously consider many different ways of how to deliver on our promise of bringing creative play to more children.

‘We want to clarify that as things currently stand we will not renew the existing co-promotion contract with Shell when the present contract ends.’ Lego refused to say when the current contract expires.

YOU might think that Zebre will be a sight for Leinster’s sore eyes tomorrow afternoon, but the Italians have their tails up right now and their black and white stripes signal caution. In their former incarnation of Aironi and their current guise as Zebre, the little brothers to Treviso have never beaten Leinster in eight attempts. In fact, just one measly losing bonus point at the RDS in February 2011 is all they have earned.

220 Points Leinster have scored in eight games against Aironi/Zebre

Leinster obviously need a quick rebound from last Saturday’s emasculating defeat to Munster but they are in a catch-22 situation where a tight win would be deemed a disaster while a big win would be categorised as facile. Heaven forbid the reaction if they lose. Whatever the first-choice selection is for the Wasps game that will kick off the European Champions Cup next week, it must get a trial run at the Stadio XXV Aprile – or at least the majority of it. With injuries to Cian Healy, Sean O’Brien and Shane Jennings, three players are now vital for Leinster’s well-being: Jack McGrath, Rhys Ruddock and Dominic Ryan. The flankers, Ruddock and

formula one

D

Ryan, have enough game time to warrant a rest ahead of the games with Wasps and Castres. Jack Conan has shown enough off the bench to earn a start tomorrow, and with Kane Douglas in need of games, Mike McCarthy could become a viable option in the back row. Let’s not forget Kevin McLaughlin’s presence either, but for all his niggling injuries over the past 12 months, it’s been hard to tell if Matt O’Connor really likes him as a fit for his team. The other question marks come at out-half and outside centre. Jimmy Gopperth is a safe pair of hands but it’s been a trying start to the season for him. How Ian Madigan figures into the equation depends on who wears No 13. Right now, O’Connor seems settled on Madigan and Gordon D’Arcy in midfield, which means Gopperth stays at ten. However, if Brendan Macken is going to become a topdrawer Leinster player then maybe he needs a few more big-game outings to prove that. This could facilitate Madigan’s return to ten, but we’re not holding our breath. There’s lots to juggle for O’Connor this weekend (who’d be a rugby coach?) and he needs to smooth the preparation for Wasps, but a word of warning: Zebre beat Ulster two weeks ago and came within a point of Ospreys last week. Leinster beware.

FORMULA One has arrived at the Black Sea Olympic resort of Sochi for the inaugural Russian Grand Prix, a race dogged by controversy throughout the summer and now overshadowed by Jules Bianchi’s accident in Japan last Sunday. The circuit facilities, the accommodation and the quiet city have all been met with approval, but there is no party atmosphere as the F1 community comes to grips with the accident and concern for whether the 25-year-old Frenchman will make a full recovery and return to racing following his severe brain injury. Marussia are yet to announce if they will run a second car this weekend and the decision is likely to be determined by the wishes of the Bianchi family. The team have put reserve driver Alexander Rossi on the entry list, as they are contractually obliged to enter two cars, but there will be no consequences on this occasion if they just race Max Chilton or pull out entirely.

‘We owe Derry big time,’ says chambers HAVING suffered defeat to them in two recent finals, St Patrick’s Athletic owe Derry City one big time in the FAI Ford Cup. But James Chambers insists revenge at the Aviva Stadium on November 2 is on the back-burner for now as guaranteeing Europe via the league is paramount first. ‘We’re delighted to be in the final. But our focus for now is securing third spot,’ said midfielder Chambers ahead of tonight’s trip to Drogheda United. ‘Some people may think we’ve cemented it, but we know we need to confirm it.’ With three games to play, St Pat’s are seven points ahead of fourth-

place Shamrock Rovers, who have a game in hand, though that’s taking place in Dundalk on Monday night. ‘You can’t take your eye of it or you will slip up,’ added Chambers in relation to remaining focused on the league run-in. ‘We need to secure Europe and we’re looking to go to Drogheda and put on a performance and take maximum points.’ Only then can the cup final truly come onto the team’s radar. Should St Pat’s seal third, it will mean Rovers would need a favour from Saints in beating Derry in the cup final to get Europe.

And even though he’s a former Rovers player, and lost the 2010 final with them to Sligo Rovers, Chambers isn’t concerned with Rovers’ situation. ‘We’ll be going to win it for ourselves. I’ve been to two finals and lost both, so I want to win it. We want to win some silverware.’ Derry agonisingly beat St Pat’s 43 in the 2006 decider while they then turned them over again, 3-2, two years ago with Chambers in that losing Saints side. ‘We owe them one, absolutely,’ said Chambers. ‘It wasn’t a nice feeling the last time so we’ll be out for revenge certainly.’

‘I obviously had a disagreement with Peter. But again if you read the book you’ll see that last year me and Peter had breakfast in London. It was a good ending to it. People will look at negatives but there’s been a lot of good stuff, and the highlight is the players I’ve played with.’

WALES are widely tipped to end their long wait to play in a major tournament by qualifying for Euro 2016. But there may be a bump in the road to France this evening when Bosnia visit Cardiff. Gareth Bale will do his best to propel the hosts to a big win but the absence of injured midfield pair Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen is a real blow. Real Madrid star Bale (below) is 17/10 with Unibet

and 888sport to score – Edin Dzeko is 13/10 with William Hill to net for the visitors. Both teams to score is 19/20 with Coral and Bosnia are 5/4 with Ladbrokes, Hills and others to win. Meanwhile, Scotland are 8/11 with Hills to beat Georgia and Bet365 go 2/1 that Steven Naismith scores.

‘The problem I had, is that when you have worked with somebody for such a long time – and obviously we had our disagreements and I departed, and I have no problems with that – it’s afterwards when people start coming out with all sorts of nonsense. ‘For alex Ferguson, not just to criticise myself, but other players who were part of a team that brought some good days to lots of supporters, for him to criticise that when you think of what he made out of it – he made millions of pounds out of it. ‘He got his statues, he’s got his stand named after him – to come back and criticise... ‘I said at the time, I wasn’t too bothered about myself, but to criticise people who brought him success was just ridiculous. Will I ever forgive him? I don’t know. We’ll see if we ever cross paths again. I’m sure we will – cross paths, I mean.’

‘The stuff that has been said about me over the years, even from ex-team-mates, is a pack of lies, just lies and lies and lies, and sometimes you just say, “Listen, I have got to get up and say something myself and defend myself a little bit”.’

by DAniEL jOnEs Roy Keane has admitted he does not know if he will ever forgive alex Ferguson after branding criticism of some of his former Manchester United team-mates ‘ridiculous’. Keane takes aim at Fergie, who lifted the lid on differences with Keane and David Beckham among others in his autobiography last year, in his new memoir The Second Half. The 43-year-old, who left United in 2005, pulled no punches at the launch of his book in Dublin yesterday. asked if he would ever forgive the former United boss, Keane replied: ‘Good question. I’m not sure. ‘Football is a small world and eventually, you will cross paths with people again.

THE TipsTER

Alex Ferguson has given his backing to louis van gaal’s start at Manchester united by saying the Dutchman’s approach has been ‘brilliant’. Van gaal succeeded David Moyes in May, splashing out more than £150million on new talent and also letting some players go during the summer. After a sticky start to his

tenure, Van gaal’s rebuilding work sees united up to fourth place in the Premier league. And former boss Ferguson – in his first remarks about Van gaal’s start at old Trafford – said he was right to have made so many changes to the squad. In an MuTV programme called sir Alex: life After Management, Ferguson said: ‘louis van gaal has made a

lot of changes and maybe he is doing the right and correct thing, to clear the decks and build his own team because he’s got the experience and coaching ability to do that. He has got the reputation to do that.’ The 72-year-old scot, who remains on the united board, continued: ‘I think the way he’s approached it is brilliant.’

And the 28-year-old hopes his story of patience and perseverance can now be an inspiration to others looking to break into Martin O’Neill’s squad. Hull midfielder Quinn had to wait until June last year for his first senior cap, aged 27, and it was a further 15 months before he was handed his first recognised start in the euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia. However, Quinn seized the chance and his performance in the 2-1 victory in Tbilisi has done wonders for the confidence of a player who almost quit the game following the death of both his parents in his early twenties. ‘it’s great getting that first qualifying game under my belt,’ said the former Sheffield United midfielder. ‘i think everyone knows how much that meant to me with my parents passing. it was a proud moment for the family and me. i’d worked so hard to get there and i was 28 when i was getting my first qualifying game, so it was a hard road, it was a long road, but i never doubted myself.’ Quinn’s story is motivation for any player

There’s plenty of lads that would give an arm and a leg to put the green jersey on, so you just have to dig deep and keep going. The chance will come if you just keep plugging away and working hard.’ The win in Georgia, courtesy of two goals from Aiden McGeady, set ireland up nicely for this month’s qualifying double-header. O’Neill’s men are at home to UefA’s newest members Gibraltar on Saturday before taking on world champions Germany next Tuesday.
