€4billion pledged for gaza
A DONOR conference in Cairo to raise money to rebuild the Gaza Strip after this year’s war between Hamas and Israel ended with pledges of €4.3billion for reconstruction there, Norway’s foreign minister said yesterday. And Ireland has pledged an additional €2.5million in funding towards relief and reconstruction in Gaza, Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan announced yesterday from the meeting. The conference, organised by Egypt and Norway, focused on humanitarian relief and the need to replace buildings and infrastructure destroyed during six weeks of Israeli air strikes and ground operations in Gaza. The latest money pledged by Ireland is made up of €500,000 in immediate humanitarian relief and €2million in recovery assistance to be disbursed over the next two years. It brings to €10million the total amount of funding from the Irish Government to Gaza in 2014. Speaking at the Cairo conference, Minister Flanagan said: ‘The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire and it is clear that significant resources will be required to meet both immediate needs and longer term recovery assistance and reconstruction.’ Egyptian state television quoted Norwegian Foreign Minister Børge Brende as offering the figure at the end of the one-day conference.

That’s far beyond the €3.1billion initially sought by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Qatar pledged €800million toward the reconstruction, once again using its vast wealth to reinforce its role as a regional player as Gulf Arab rival the United Arab Emirates promised €158million. The pledges followed US Secretary of State John Kerry earlier announcing immediate American assistance of €170million. The European Union pledged €450million, while Turkey, which has been playing a growing role in the Middle East in recent years, said it was donating €158million. Delegates representing some 50 nations and 20 regional and international organisations applauded the pledge by Qatar, a tiny but energy-rich Gulf Arab nation at odds with its larger neighbours, like the Emirates. Organisers of the Cairo conference hope the pledges will be paid over the period of three years to aid reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, which borders Israel and Egypt. Both countries have blockaded Gaza since Hamas took power there in 2007, causing the territory of 1.8million people economic hardships and high unemployment. Donors plan to funnel the aid through Mr Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, and bypass Hamas.

MAMMy MIA! MRS BROWN STAR gETS STRIcTLy BOOT MRS Brown’s Boys star Jennifer Gibney was voted off Strictly Come Dancing last night after losing the elimination dance-off against Blue’s Simon Webbe. The Irish actress – whose husband Brendan O’Carroll plays her ‘mammy’ in the hit comedy – failed to wow judges with her foxtrot to Abba’s Mamma Mia. She said she’d enjoyed working with dance partner Tristan MacManus, adding: ‘Before this, I didn’t know how to dance. I had a 3-inch leech living up my nose for a month! MOST people bring back souvenirs from their holidays – but Daniela Liverani unwittingly brought a leech back from her travels. The 3in worm did not hitch a ride out of south-east Asia in her suitcase or on the sole of her shoe – but up her nose, where it lived happily for weeks before being noticed. The 24-year-old had nosebleeds for two weeks after returning from Vietnam but she dismissed it as a burst blood vessel after a motorbike crash earlier on the holiday. ‘After I got home, the nosebleeds stopped and I started seeing something sticking out of my nostril. I just thought it was congealed blood,’ said Ms Liverani, from Edinburgh. However, when the slimy black
bloodsucker made it as far as her bottom lip when she was in the shower she took a closer look in the mirror. ‘I saw ridges. That’s when I realised it was an animal,’ she said. It took half an hour for doctors to remove the parasite from her nose when she went to A&E.
‘It was total agony – whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose. ‘Then the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. It had been curled up in a big ball, using my nostril as a

Water charge revolt taking off, insists Murphy NEW DubliN South West TD Paul Murphy says he will use his Dáil seat to ‘encourage the revolt’ against water charges – as an estimated 50,000 people marched
by cOn DOHERTy in Dublin city centre to protest against the charges on Saturday. The Anti-Austerity Alliance candidate beat Sinn Féin’s Cathal King to claim the Dáil seat vacated by Fine Gael’s brian Hayes, who was elected to the European Parliament in June. Sinn Féin was expected to easily win Friday’s by-election but early on during the count on Saturday it became clear it was battle between Mr King and Mr Murphy, which the former MEP eventually won on the eighth count. Hailing his victory, Mr Murphy said his clear opposition to the water charges had resonated with people across the constituency, which covers Tallaght and Templeogue. Mr Murphy said: ‘This is a result because of a revolt against the water charges. There is no question about it.’ He added: ‘i think that was reflected in the vote and in reality

The crowd was addressed by unite union leader Jimmy Kelly, independent TD Clare Daly and People before Profit TD Richard boyd-barrett. in Roscommon-South lei-

Defending the water charges, labour’s Aodhan Ó Ríordáin said that water charges are here to stay, but added that he expects relief for some in tomorrow’s budget.
Craughwell off to Seanad
INDEPENDENT Gerard Craughwell won Friday’s Seanad by-election – narrowly beating the Government candidate who asked TDs and senators not to vote for him. Mr Craughwell secured 87 first preferences to 84 for Fine Gael’s John McNulty, and then secured the seat when transfers from Sinn Féin’s Catherine Seeley were distributed. Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for the Arts, Heritage
and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys were accused of cronyism when Mr McNulty was appointed to a State board and then announced as Fine Gael’s candidate for the Seanad vacancy. Mr Kenny later apologised for his handling of the affair, and Mr McNulty asked Oireachtas members not to vote for him. Ms Humphreys said she appointed the Donegal man to the IMMA board ‘on merit’.
70% have not binned Huge rise in contacts recycling waste properly with homeless charity SEVEN out of ten Irish people are bin sinners and regularly dump the wrong items in their recycling bins – including nappies, razors and cigarette butts. Recycling giant Repak revealed that other incorrect items regularly turning up in green bins are greasy cooking foil, unrinsed food containers, shoes, clothes and handbags. Repak said that while 90 per cent of Irish people claim to know what goes in their green bin, these dirty secrets show that Ireland could do with cleaning up its act in the green bin department. According to the research to mark Repak Recycling Week 2014, six in ten Irish people believe that those who use their bin incorrectly should be penalised for contaminating it with the wrong waste. But it’s not all bad news for Irish people as Repak said we are now second in Europe for package recycling. Seamus Clancy, CEO of Repak said: ‘If your bin is contaminated with rubbish or dirty recyclables it makes the recycling process a lot more difficult. ‘We are all in this together. Let’s take time to ensure what we put into our recycling bin is both clean and correct so the materials can become similar products to be used and recycled again.’
HOMELESS support charity Focus Ireland has recorded a rise of 43 per cent this year in the number of people seeking advice and information because they are homeless or at serious risk of losing their home. As it prepares for its flagship charity event – Shine A Light Night on Friday – the charity reported that 3,588 people had sought advice and information in the first eight months of this year, compared to 2,500 people over the same period last year. Focus Ireland said this significant rise was a reflection of the reality that more people are now at risk of losing their family home. The charity expanded its advice and information services to meet this growing need. Next Friday night, nearly 100 business leaders and community leaders will sleep out rough in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens and Cork’s City Gaol, to raise money for Focus Ireland’s services. Head of Fundraising Lisa-Nicole Dunne said that the charity has to raise one third of its income from fundraising so events such as Shine a Light Night are critical in allowing Focus Ireland to continue to support people struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Ebola victim is infected despite safety clothing by SHAROn MARRiS
A NURSE who looked after the first ebola victim to die in the US contracted the virus despite wearing full protective clothing while she cared for him. The details emerged as the Dallas home of the medic who has tested positive for the virus was sealed off by police yesterday. As officers stood guard at her home, a barrel marked ‘biohazard’ was placed outside by emergency workers. Officials in ery Texas are ‘very concerned’ that the first transmission of the virus on US soil occurred despite following health and safety guidelines. The female nurse, who has not been named, works at the Texas Presbyterian Hospital and was part of the team that cared for ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, who died last week. She is in a stable condition. Mr Duncan, 42, died days after arriving in the US from Liberia, via Brussels. A preliminary test on the nurse was positive for ebola on Saturday, and

He said all healthcare workers who cared for Mr Duncan were at risk, adding: ‘It is very concerning and it tells us that there’s a need to enhance training and protocols to make sure they are followed.’ Fifty people who had direct or indirect contact with the diseased are being monitored, he added. Mr Duncan arrived at a friend’s home on September 20, days after helping his sick neighbour in Liberia. The US began screening passengers arriving at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport for ebola on Saturday and will start testing at four other airports on Thursday. That will cover 94 per cent of travellers arriving from ebolaaffected countries, Dr Frieden said.
Government response ‘is a disgrace’ cHARiTy Goal has slammed as ‘a disgrace’ the decision by the Government not to send irish soldiers to help fight the ebola epidemic in west Africa. Government officials considered deploying irish troops to join British, American and other forces battling the virus which has killed more than 4,000 people in a number of African countries – but the suggestion was shot down on health and safety grounds, according to reports. Goal chief executive Barry Andrews said ireland should deploy military experts from the Defence Forces to lend their logistical expertise in the building of ebola treatment centres and other work. Mr Andrews said: ‘if the irish Government takes on board this recommendation and confirms that it will not be deploying irish troops to West Africa because of health and safety concerns it will be nothing short of a disgrace. ‘What they will essentially be saying is that it is acceptable for irish aid workers to step up to the mark, but that it is too risky for the men and women of the irish Army.’

Spanish nurse ‘feels slightly better’ after drug treatment THE nurse who became the first person infected with ebola outside Africa is showing signs of a ‘slight improvement’, the Spanish government said last night. Teresa Romero was reportedly conscious and sitting unaided after beginning a course of experimental drug ZMapp on Friday. Doctors said a decline in her health could not be ruled out. About 16 people who came into contact with Mrs Romero are being monitored in hospital after she tested
positive for ebola. The 44-year-old was placed in quarantine, along with husband Javier, after nursing two Spanish missionaries who caught the virus in west Africa. She came down with a fever soon after Fr Manuel Garcia Viejo, 75, died of the disease on September 25 but had to alert doctors three times before she was taken to hospital. Development of ZMapp is being fast-tracked after US doctors given it survived – but it is not clear whether it was the drug that saved them.

‘Hate crime laws failing’ RIgHTs groups have renewed calls for hate crime legislation after only 47 incidents were recorded in the first half of 2014. Officially, the number of racist, homophobic and antisemitic cases up to the end of June is slightly below the previous two years – which saw 111 reports for the whole of 2013 and 118 in 2012. Campaigners claim Ireland is the only western democracy not to specifically classify hate crime, leaving a massive gap between records and reality.

It is estimated that humanist funerals are now running at ten times what they were in 2007.

LOVE/HATE threw out a real shocker last night – nobody got whacked (despite tabloid speculation earlier in the week). But it wasn’t for the want of trying. Nidge’s new best pal Pauley (Johnny Ward) seeks to do him a favour and kill Traveller boss Patrick (John Connors) following last week’s botched peace talks. Wily Patrick is expecting trouble and is ready for him – and he and his crew set an ambush for Pauley, who barely escapes with his life. And when Fran (Peter Coonan) later comes knocking to play the diplomat between Patrick and Nidge (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), Patrick sees a opportunity to rid himself of his new nemesis. He tells Fran that Nidge tried to kill him because Patrick is the only other person alive who knows that it was Nidge who threw the pipe bomb that maimed Fran’s wife back in the day. Fran freaks out and vows to kill Nidge. Patrick eggs him on and even supplies a gun. However, lucky for Nidge, that handover is witnessed by Detective Ciaran (Kieran O’Reilly). As furious Fran heads for a murderous showdown with the kingpin, Ciaran arrests him at the Port Tunnel toll booth. Fran is heading to prison for possession of a handgun – but Nidge is under no illusions that the threat is over. Meanwhile, Nidge is set on getting back to business, and after he and Pauley shake their Garda tail, they hold a meeting near Dublin Zoo with Costa crime boss Terence’s haulier contact Brendan (played by Hollywood starlet Saoirse Ronan’s dad Paul) to make arrangements for the first shipment under their new deal. Speaking to the Sunday World, Johnny Ward said that things between Pauley and Nidge are ‘only hotting up’. He added: I think fans saw that my character, Pauley, and Nidge are probably not going to get on as the series continues, so it becomes a battle.’ He remained coy on how his relationship with Siob- Best pal: Johnny han develops, just saying Ward as Pauley they ‘kick it up a notch’.
‘I like her,’ McGuinness says of ruling British monarch Former IrA commander martin mcGuinness has said he likes Queen elizabeth. The Sinn Féin Deputy First minister paid tribute to her courage in agreeing to meet him. The veteran republican first met the British monarch when they shook hands at a charity event in Belfast in 2012 in a highly symbolic gesture of reconciliation. But McTrusty confessed he once questioned whether the band would make it. ‘There has been moments,’ the Glaswegian said. ‘we went to America two or three years ago, playing shows to ten people – we felt there was no direction. when you have time on your hands those things make you question life, you get lost in your own mind. i’m too determined to let things like that get in the way. ‘i don’t think there’s anything that can really distract us from meeting our goal.’ Twin Atlantic’s new single, Hold On, is released on november 10.

Triple suicide bomb attack by is leaves 58 dead in iraq by sinAn sALAHEDDin a TrIPle suicide bombing killed at least 58 people in Iraq as a roadside bomb killed the police chief of the western anbar province, authorities said, attacks that dealt major blows to Iraqi security forces struggling to combat Islamic State extremists. The triple attack took place in Qara Tappah in ethnically mixed Diyala province, an official from the Kurdish asayish security forces said. He said the first bomber detonated an explosives vest at the gateway to a security compound that also houses the office of a main Kurdish political party. minutes later, two suicide bombers ploughed cars filled with explosives into the compound, causing heavy damage, he said. The Islamic State extremist group claimed the attack, saying it was carried out by three foreign jihadists. The authenticity of the online statement could not be independently verified, but it was posted on a Twitter account frequently used by the militant group. The group has seized towns in volatile Diyala province and has clashed with Kurdish forces there.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. all officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Bashir al-Dalawi, a member of the Qara Tappah municipal council, where the attacks took place, said that the bombs detonated near a govern-
ment building, leading to the higher death toll. He says at least 107 people were wounded in the attack. In the anbar attack, Brig Gen ahmed al-Dulaimi was killed while travelling in a convoy north of the provincial capital ramadi through an area cleared by Iraqi security forces a
WORLD digest putin orders troop pullback at border
RussiA: Vladimir Putin has ordered thousands of troops near the Ukrainian border to return to base. The president said 17,600 soldiers training in the Rostov region, where proRussian rebels have been battling government troops since April, would be pulled back. It comes ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and EU leaders on Friday. The West has imposed sanctions on Moscow in response to its ‘provocative’ moves in the area.
Rights meeting raided by police cHinA: Police raided a conference of rights lawyers while they discussed wrongful cases. Sui Muqing, one of the attorneys, said officers told them they were investigating a pyramid scheme. The group of 40 was put on a bus and is thought to have been taken to a police station. Rights lawyers are a growing force in the country, where they demand more independence for courts. The government says they are politically motivated.
day earlier, anbar councilman Faleh al-Issawi said. It was not immediately clear if others were killed or injured in the attack. The Islamic State group and allied Sunni militants seized the anbar city of Fallujah, parts of ramadi and large rural areas of anbar early this year.

Ebola may spread and now is the time to get prepared
E
bola is spreading and has reached Europe. When news broke that Spanish nurse Teresa Romero had contracted the virus, reaction in Spain was one of shock and horror – not only at the possible fate of the nurse but the realisation of the economic consequences on a country that relies on tourism. Since then, 14 others in Spain have been admitted for monitoring. Ireland has become interconnected in a world that has grown smaller. Putting up screening patrols at ports and borders may bring relief but many passing through will present as asymptomatic. The HSE needs to roll out an information campaign. People need assurances Ireland is ready to deal with Ebola once it arrives. Panic generated by ignorance must be avoided. In addition, Ireland needs to lead the charge on the international front by donating aid and encouraging others to do the same. The Ebola crisis will only be dealt with at the source. our african friends need our help. It will cost us if we don’t. Killian B

iven its title, the fact that Dan Snaith’s fourth album as Caribou is about close human connections is hardly surprising. However, it’s not the chocolate-box view of romantic love that interests him – rather, it’s the entire spectrum of relationships, with all their difficulties and rewards. And it’s a generous gesture, rather than a self-satisfying act of creation. As the Canadian producer has explained: ‘i wanted to make music with the intention that if you are listening to it, then it is for you.’ Sentiments aside, Our Love will cause anyone with a pulse to swoon more dramatically than a Mills & Boon heroine. Musically, it’s much more in tune with Snaith’s dancefloor-driven work under his Daphni alias than with his previous album Swim’s nu-disco and minimal techno styles. Lush, dreamy and drenched in vivid colours, it’s driven by smart, hip hop beat patterns and underlines Snaith’s talent for writing cracking tunes as heavy on the deep soul as they are the pop-house groove. Opening track Can’t Do Without You was one of the feel-good hits of the summer. no wonder – it builds sweetly but insistently from a simple, muffled beat and vocal loop, until the volume kicks in and it , sh ve is lu erupts in a shower Our Lo d drenched an of euphoric, Daydreamy colours, it’s id Glo synths. ip iv h v , rt in by sma hat Silver is just n e iv r d ats t e b t p as impressive, its n o h ale ne his t li sweetly forlorn, r e d n u retro sci-fi whooshes echoing film score composer vangelis and French electronica act Air, with Snaith’s voice sounding almost as anguished as it does rapturous. Other highlights are Second Chance, featuring Canadian singer Jessy Lanza along with fluttering synths, and Mars, where stuttering, shape-shifting rhythms and treated vocals combine to suggest that it’s being beamed from an undiscovered galaxy, light years away. Sensual yet somehow pure, celebratory but reflective, Our Love is a hot contender for 2014’s Most irresistible Dance Record. Sharon O’Connell

JOIN ME IN THE PINES inHERit ★★★✩✩
Dave Geraghty – one-third of seemingly indefatigable Irish group Bell X1 – goes it alone once more on this, his third solo effort. While his two previous outings were released under his own name, this time around there’s an intriguing new moniker and some striking artwork as
Geraghty aims to create a more identifiable world. The grandiose Mezzanine opens proceedings nicely, leading into First Light – the dainty debut single which pleases with witty turns of phrase and gently plucked strings. It wouldn’t have looked out of place on Bell X1’s last release – the more threadbare Chop Chop – but Inherit is very much Geraghty’s own creation as he furrows a path built around a light and spindly folk core.
Steven Ellison’s latest album as Flying Lotus needs a deep breath before you plunge in – not because it’s difficult, but because it’s deep. The LA producer has always pushed hard at hip hop and electronica boundaries, with jazz as much a part of his DNA as contemporary beats music (he’s the great-nephew of avant jazz iconoclast Alice Coltrane). But You’re Dead! really smashes the ‘jazz fusion’ mould. It’s a short but dazzlingly intense psychedelic trip that features composer/jazz keys don Herbie Hancock, plus Thundercat and rappers Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg. It’s also seductively upbeat, despite the fact that it deals with death. SO’C
WEEZER
EVERytHing WiLL BE aLRigHt in tHE EnD (iSLanD) ★★★✩✩ Having practically invented nerdcore punk-pop with their first mid-1990s albums – which featured such ridiculously catchy singles as Buddy Holly – Rivers Cuomo and crew have spent the past few decades accused by fans of both a steady decline in quality and of ‘selling out’. Filled with self-referential meta moments and apologies, this record actively pitches itself as a triumphant return to form – but while punchy tracks such as I’ve Had It Up To Here recall Weezer’s former pop-rock brilliance, it still all feels somewhat flat, as if the heart has been ripped out of the whole enterprise. AD
ALSOOUT... ZOLA JESUS TAIGA ★★★✩✩ Russian-American trained opera singer Nika Danilova has never been a timid voice in leftfield electronic pop but, with her latest LP, she’s scaling new peaks of scale and ambition. The combination of her K2-sized compositions, rich, powerful pipes and arena-filling dynamics is impressive and proves her a distinctive talent. GORGON CITY SIRENS ★★✩✩✩ Since the smash success of Rudimental, the Black Butter label has gone from strength to strength. Its latest ‘triumph’ is this duo, whose debut is a set of impeccably crafted but depressingly anodyne electronic r’n’b/pop tunes, with guest vocalists including Katy B. It’s music that needs a tag of its own – emotronica, anyone? TINASHE AQUARIUS ★★★✩✩ For those who find FKA Twigs ‘too much’, there’s Tinashe. Which is not to judge the 21-year-old harshly but her 18-track debut is a perfectly groomed, highly produced, contemporary r’n’b LP that joins the dots between TLC, Rihanna and Sky Ferreira. Most of its experimental edges have been buffed smooth, but the song Bet is terrific. SO’C Debut single Joy Is A Lion impresses with a breezy, kooky charm, while Golden Guilt’s more sinister tones are a welcome diversion. Though he cuts loose on the heavier Man With The Mission and the dusty Nick Cave-like vibes of In The Ground it’s a laid back affair overall. Geraghty has enough about him to hold the attention across instrumentation that’s typically genteel but a patient ear is required to fully unlock its charms. Bryan O’Hanlon

‘fantastic guy’: dakota fanning as effie Gray with Greg Wise, who plays John ruskin
‘I
would love to work with Jodie Foster. I’ve always felt like we’ve had a similar path.’ dakota Fanning might sound rather presumptuous but she’s got a point. Both first appeared on TV around the age of six and both made a smooth transition from child to adult actor. As she sips coffee in a london hotel, dressed in a crisp white shirt, black shorts and heels, it is hard to believe Fanning is still only 20 years old. She’s a far cry from the precocious little child from the TV series Taken, yet still recognisable, her distinctive eyes leaping out from a fresh, round face. Fanning is in town for the premiere of Effie Gray, a period drama about the girl who married Victorian art critic John Ruskin (Greg wise), only to find him uninterested in consummating the marriage. ‘It’s the definition of a loveless marriage,’ says the actress. ‘She’s emotionally tortured for all those years and eventually gets her marriage annulled, which as a woman was pretty out-there for the time.’ dakota puts in a subtle, Englishaccented performance as the confused young Effie (below right), torn between propriety and youthful exuberance. Tom Sturridge plays just one of the handsome young men who takes an interest in Effie. ‘I’m super close to Tom,’ she says of Mr Sienna Miller, ‘and Greg is a fantastic guy, I loved working with him.’ The screenplay was written by wise’s wife and co-star, Emma Thompson. did it feel weird playing opposite the writer’s husband? ‘You know it really didn’t – we didn’t have anything romantic to do!’ It sounds like things are going rather better in her real-life
‘I’m kind of cool with the big things’ Dakota Fanning can handle life in the Hollywood fast lane, then. Anna Smith meets the child star who’s all grown up romance with model Jamie Strachan. ‘Yes, they are,’ she smiles, before laughing slightly nervously. Fanning is unapologetically ambitious. ‘My family were professional athletes so my mentality is about working hard and practising and giving your whole self,’ she explains. Fanning lives on her own in downtown New York, where she is studying women’s studies at university. I ask what her classmates think
about their famous fellow student. ‘By this time everyone’s matured and is fine with it,’ she says. what keeps her awake at night – study projects? ‘weird things like: “oh, I gotta take my trash out tomorrow.” I’m quite neurotic about the little things.’ So what big things are in dakota’s future? upcoming movies include Franny with Richard Gere, American Pastoral with Ewan McGregor, and Brain on Fire, in which she will play journalist and author Susannah Cahalan. The producer is one Charlize Theron. That collaboration with Jodie Foster can’t be far away...
Effie Gray is out now
Tom Cruise
(WAr Of The WOrldS) ‘he is one of the kindest, most exuberant people I’ve ever met. I turned 11 during the movie but I was old enough to know Tom Cruise. he speaks to you and you feel like you’re the only person he’s speaking to.’
emma Thompson
(effie Gray) ‘I love her. everyone who meets her is like, “I wanna be like her one day.” She truly is that person: her wit, her sense of humour. She’s so thoughtful and so kind.’

BBC1, 11.15pm Have we really had a decade of early morning alarm calls, boardroom dressing downs and mixed metaphors from Alan Sugar? By way of whetting our appetites for another series of entrepreneurial selfdelusion (it stars tomorrow), here’s a lookback at a sackload of highlights.

Fox, 9pm Just how much pain and anguish can Sheriff Rick (the marvellous Andrew Lincoln) and his ragtag band of post-apocalyptic survivors take? E4, 9pm It’s time to hucker down with a better class of reality soap star – well, posher accents at any rate – as we are treated to another dose of who is doing what and to whom in and around London’s chi-chi King’s Road. It’s totes drama as Louise’s new boyf, Alik, encounters Andy. Andy? Bit of

9. Glue
E4, 10pm Who killed Cal? That’s the burning question stalking this gripping teen drama as both James and Rob find themselves lined up as the next potential victims when they try to unmask the stalker who has been circling the increasingly frantic bunch of friends at the heart of the mystery. It’s down to policewoman Romany Ruth to launch her own
private investigation as her former friends close ranks and the mystery deepens.

The series that offers remarkable and rather risky access to the nuts and bolts of police work this week highlights the case of a suspected paedophile brought in for questioning by Bedfordshire police. Given how high emotions run in such cases, we’re playing with fire here.

Kavanagh may now be regarded as one of our greatest poets but, like many an Irish artist before him, the beauty of his prose runs counterpoint to a life overflowing with grubbiness, booze and drama. A lumbering, uncouth ‘culchie’, he swapped the fields for the drink-soaked streets of Dublin. A collection of terrible CVs, covering letters and interview techniques reveals the depths of some job candidates’ stupidity. Paul Dietrich despairs for mankind
T
he job interview and CV is your chance to impress upon employers that you, above all others, should get the job. You tailor your CV so it fits tight as a glove to the job specification, craft your covering letter with all the care of a Quentin Tarantino film script and are so charming in the interview George Clooney would seem an uneducated fool. everyone knows the score. Well, maybe not everyone. Take the guy who, when asked how he had diffused tense situations with clients in the past, replied: ‘I wrestled them to the ground.’ or the woman who started her CV with a mission statement about how much she wanted a career in beekeeping… when applying for a job as a nurse. These, and many more besides, feature in a litany of bad judgement, rank desperation and barely contained psychopathy that make up a book of résumés, covering letters and first-hand horror stories from interviewers entitled, with every justification, Crap CVs. So next time you fear you may have given less than your best when looking for work, console yourself with these. Maybe you didn’t get the job but at least you didn’t come out with one of these howlers.

‘a woman came in with a wallaby’ Some people make it as far as the actual interview but as these first-hand accounts from hR folks show, you do wonder how… HE SHOWED up on a hot July day wearing a single glove in the style of Michael Jackson and dripping sweat. After nervously fiddling with his hair for a while he panicked and made a run for the screen door, which was closed at the time, so it fell out on to the balcony and smashed.
her neck, nibbled her earlobes and grinded up against her. They pretty much had sex in my office.
One man asked me what my star sign was and then accused me of lying, because my answer didn’t tally with the ‘energy he was sensing’.
I had a woman bring a baby wallaby into an interview and let it hop around our office. Apparently, it was too young to be left on its own, her previous wallaby having broken its neck while she wasn’t properly supervising it.
A woman came in with her boyfriend to fill out a job application form. While she did so he kissed
Car crash: In Trainspotting, the character of Spud ruined his interview chances by turning up on drugs. The real-life examples here are similarly catastrophic

Going up in smoke: Rosberg, front left, makes an early error to help the title bid of Hamilton, right
Lewis: This one is for Jules
by ADAM HAy-nicHOLLs F1 Correspondent
Lewis HamiLton dedicated his Russian Grand Prix victory to Jules Bianchi as mercedes’ celebrations at clinching their first constructors’ championship were tempered by thoughts of the man fighting for his life. Hamilton took full advantage of nico Rosberg’s latest mistake to claim his fourth win in a row, becoming only the fourth driver in history to win nine races in a year and extending his title advantage over his team-mate to 17 points. Rosberg had to settle for a ninth runners-up spot of the season, but it was achieved in remarkable fashion given his error on the run-up to the first braking zone at the sochi autodrom, at turn two.
‘Jules has been on my mind all week’ Having slipstreamed Hamilton off the line, Rosberg pulled out and momentarily held the lead, only to outbrake himself, a move which saw him flat spot his tyres and pit early for new rubber. Dropping to 20th, Rosberg then ran for the remainder of the race on the one set of tyres. For Hamilton, there was obvious delight at victory but his thoughts quickly turned to Bianchi. with the French driver in a critical condition in Yokkaichi after

Rosberg gives himself a tough brake NIco RosBeRG admitted he only had himself to blame for the botched first-lap manoeuvre that ultimately cost him his shot at winning the Russian Grand Prix. The Mercedes man broke too heavily after passing teammate and eventual winner Lewis Hamilton, damaging his tyres in the process to necessitate a costly early pit crashing at suzuka, Hamilton revealed his anguish.‘all week there’s been just one person on my mind, and that’s Jules,’ the Briton said. ‘there has been excitement and happiness for the team but, without a doubt, every time i’ve got in the car, i’ve been

It was very unnecessary because it was my corner and I should have been in the lead after that. so obviously very disappointed with that. It was definitely doable. I just messed up.’ thinking about him and his family. ‘whether it means anything, or whether it does anything, it would be great to dedicate this to Jules and hisfamily. ‘it will make a very small difference to them but every bit of positive energy hopefully will help.’
Mads about the boy: Madigan was the difference against a tough Zebre
O’cOnnOR MusT DRAw LinE in THE sAnD As MADigAn’s MAgic OpEns up ZEbRE IT’S DECISION time for Matt O’Connor after Ian Madigan did what he so often does in the No.10 shirt and now he has to be in pole position to start against Wasps come Sunday. It’s clear to anyone watching Leinster in the past six months that Madigan’s ability to deliver as a playmaking inside centre has gone beyond the point of experimentation. On his first appearance of the season playing at out-half on Saturday he won the game. With the game tied at 3-3 and a feisty Zebre side threatening to upset their illustrious visitors, Madigan found a gap in the black and white defence and made the most of it to put another seven points on the scoreboard. Whatever question marks linger over his strength in the tackle, Madigan is a proven game breaker, and given Jimmy Gopperth’s below-par start to the season then it’s reasonable for there to be a serious debate over who starts at No.10 in the Champions Cup opener this weekend. The other element at play is Noel Reid’s return from injury and Gordon D’Arcy’s continued deployment at outside centre. Just back from a knee injury, Reid is hugely valued within the Leinster camp and they are
expecting big things from him this year, so while we are still asking who is Brian O’Driscoll’s long-term successor, the young Dubliner is already earmarked to follow D’Arcy. But with Johnny Sexton returning next year, Madigan’s future doesn’t lie at No.10 nor can we be sure of it being sustained at 12. No player in recent times has sparked as much debate as Madigan because of his prodigious skillset, and five years on from his professional debut we are still waiting for a coach to put their full faith in him. His talent and understanding of the game are so finely tuned that he could easily play scrum-half, out-half, either of the centre positions and at full-back, if only someone would tap into it on a weekly basis. One other issue that will struggle for as much airtime this week is the injury to Marty Moore. The tighthead came off with a shoulder injury after just 14minutes in Italy on his first start of the season and any further absence would place more pressure on Mike Ross to clock up more minutes. Options and depth at tighthead will be more important for Leinster than the identity of their starting No.10. Just don’t expect to hear as much about it.

Keane says irish have nothing to fear in germany by sAM cOsTELLO
Roy Keane has told the Republic of Ireland they have nothing to fear as they aim to further dent world champions Germany’s pursuit of euro 2016 qualification. Martin o’neill’s assistant is fully expecting a backlash from Joachim Low’s men when the Group D rivals meet in Gelsenkirchen tomorrow evening, with the Germans currently sitting in third place after Saturday’s shock 2-0 defeat in Poland. But while Keane insists Low and his players will not be panicking, he is adamant the Republic should relish the task of taking on the group favourites in their own back yard. asked if there was a fear factor, he said: ‘no, obviously not, no. That’s a silly question. obviously we know the challenge, but we have got a lot of experience and they have played in big games before. yes, they should look forward to it and hopefully they will. ‘Like any good team, they’ll respond to a setback, so we will expect Germany to come out firing on all cylinders and we have to be ready for that.’ Low’s squad has been depleted since the World Cup triumph in Brazil by the retirement from international football of key men such as Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose, while injuries have further reduced his options. However, Keane is not about to start feeling sympathy for a manager who still has a dazzling array of talent at his disposal, and a history of success. He said: ‘There are obviously going to be changes there, new players coming into the group, but they still have that quality and history behind them. ‘They are at home and they have won their first game, so I don’t think for one minute Germany will be panicking, far from it. But it happens, you can lose football matches. The downside from our point of view is you would obviously expect a response from Germany at home, so that makes it maybe even tougher.’ Germany’s form has been patchy since their summer triumph – they lost 4-2 to argentina in a friendly before a narrow victory over
Scotland in their opening qualifier – but Keane is not convinced there is any hangover from their World Cup exploits. ‘I don’t think that will be a big problem. Top players usually move on very quickly when they have had a bit of success – we saw it with the Spanish for the last eight to ten years, you can do it. ‘It’s one defeat for Germany, let’s not be getting carried away thinking they are gone. They have got top players. yes, they have lost a few experienced lads, but they always have good young players coming through. ‘Don’t think for one minute that Germany are still not a top, top team. They are, of course, they just had a setback. From what I hear, they played okay, had decent possession and lost by a couple of goals, which can happen to any team.’ Ireland, of course, have felt the full force of the Germans in recent times, losing 6-1 at home and 3-0 away during the last
qualifying campaign, but they travelled in hope of a significantly better result, if fully aware that the win over Gibraltar represented no meaningful preparation. Keane said: ‘you obviously can’t go gung-ho against a quality team like Germany, but you can’t sit back and expect to defend for 90 minutes. Let’s be solid, but hopefully be a goal threat like Poland were.’
Strange stories from the world of sport
Dave dons gloves for Steven-old-age
Barking TV man’s Shangy dog story It’S oFten quite endearing to hear commentators or pundits unable to maintain neutrality and explode with passion for their team – a wide-eyed Jeff Stelling jumping off his chair as hartlepool bang in a late one at exeter and such like. Chinese presenter Zhou Liang, however, went a bit too far when making his
loyalties clear, calling Jiangsu Sainty players ‘dogs’ before their victory at rivals Shanghai Shenhua. the Shanghai tV anchor initially denied the claims but that pesky internet proved his undoing after footage emerged on social media of Liang in full venomous flow. It’s fair to say he really
does not like Jiangsu. Reading out their team, Liang spat: ‘no.1 is a north Jiangsu dog, no.2 a north Jiangsu dog, no.3 is a north Jiangsu dog from Brazil, no.6 is a north Jiangsu dog from Lebanon… no.24 is the last north Jiangsu dog.’ Unsurprisingly, he was sacked and his employers ‘sincerely’ apologised.

Dynamo: Robbie Keane will be hoping to add to his phenomenal goal tally against Germany
Robbie Keane modestly shrugged off his goal-scoring feats after establishing himself as the top marksman in european Championship qualifying history. The 34-year-old Republic of ireland skipper helped himself to a hat-trick with a clinical display of finishing in Saturday evening’s 7-0 demolition of Gibraltar to take his tally in european qualifiers to 21, one more than Turkey’s Hakan Sukur. in the process, he increased his record career total for ireland to 65, just three fewer than West Germany legend Gerd Muller and six behind Miroslav Klose, who recently announced his retirement from international football. but Keane, who famously rarely remembers details of the games in which he has played, later insisted personal milestones were not at the forefront of his mind. asked if he was aware of the company he is keeping, he said: ‘i get messages from people telling me – my brother tells me all the time. He texts me and my mates text me, but i genuinely couldn’t tell you who’s even close to me on it. That’s being honest. i know Klose – that’s as far as i know. i never think about what’s happened before, i never think about what’s going to happen in the future.’ Keane made his senior international debut as a 17-year-old against the Czech Republic in March 1998, and scored for the first time in a green shirt against Malta in the october of the same year. Former strike partner niall Quinn, whose then record of 21 goals he surpassed a decade ago to the day on Monday, knew from those early days that the Republic had a real talent on their hands, but the Los angeles Galaxy hitman’s record is phenomenal. in the short term, the focus for Keane is a trip to Gelsenkirchen and tomorrow’s euro 2016 qualifier against World champions Germany, who slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat in Poland as ireland were making merry against Gibraltar. Keane said: ‘it’s a tough game, completely different. obviously it’s going to be a tough test. before this game [Gibraltar], our main aim was to get six points going into the Germany game and we’ve done that, so we’re going into the game with a lot of confidence. Make no mistake, we can go there and get something out of that game, there’s no question about that.’
NEIL LENNON insisted Bolton’s money problems were not a concern after taking charge of the Championship’s bottom club yesterday. The former Celtic manager has replaced Dougie Freedman, days after Bolton revealed debts of over £160million. ‘I’m looking, in the short term, to work with the players already here,’ Lennon told the BBC. ‘I tried to sign half a dozen of them in the time I was at Celtic and couldn’t do it so that shows the ability.’ The 43-year-old has been out of work since leaving Celtic in May but admits he is ‘excited’ by the challenge awaiting him at the Macron Stadium. ‘I feel very lucky,’ added Lennon, who will be joined by his former Celtic assistants Johan Mjallby and Garry Parker. ‘I’ve left one great club and I’ve joined another. I’m very excited and very proud.’
‘Unhappy’ Gunner Ozil in Bayern link MESUT OzIL is reportedly unhappy at Arsenal and could return to Germany as soon as January. Ozil (pictured) is out with a knee injury until the new year and is said to be unhappy with life in north London and, in particular, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger’s refusal to play him in his preferred central position. The reports claim the 25-year-old World Cup-winner, who cost €54million from Real Madrid in 2013, could be set to join Bayern Munich in a €38m deal when the transfer window reopens.

The goalkeeper was cleared to continue after colliding with Alexis Sanchez before being replaced by Petr Cech when his symptoms worsened. Chelsea had been criticised by charity Headway for initially allowing him to continue. The Belgium star, who played a full 90 minutes against Andorra on Friday, said: ‘She [Carneiro] asked me the questions she needed to ask and I could repeat immediately, so I was feeling well and didn’t have to come off.’

The 43-year-old former Manchester United captain was a fixture in the Ireland team when the then 17-year-old striker made his senior debut in March 1998 and set out on the road to establishing himself as the nation’s leading hitman. on Saturday evening, the Los angeles Galaxy striker marked his 136th appearance with the 63rd, 64th and 65th goals of his senior international career in a 12-minute hat-trick which laid the foundation for a 7-0 euro 2016 qualifying demolition of Gibraltar. The opposition may have been weak – and certainly significantly weaker than the wounded Germany team Ireland will face in Gelsenkirchen tomorrow evening – but assistant manager Roy Keane was delighted to witness the frontman’s enduring potency. asked if he could have expected those feats when he first came across the teenage Dubliner, he said: ‘yes, yes, of course. Robbie is a goalscorer, the stats will tell you that. There’s no surprises with Robbie. ‘To be fair to him, he keeps doing it, he keeps doing the business and trains well, he’s a good professional. I’m not surprised at all. ‘We know that anyway, we know what Robbie brings to the team. We know the hardest part of football is scoring goals and Robbie has done that for what, the last 12, 15 years for Ireland, so there were no surprises there with Robbie.’ no one within the Republic camp was allowing themselves to
get too carried away by a seven-goal drubbing of a side which was beaten within 18 first-half minutes, but there was a certain satisfaction in a victory which was every bit as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests. However, those 90 minutes at the aviva Stadium only ever represented the appetiser for tomorrow’s showdown with Group D favourites Germany, who find themselves in an unaccustomed third place as a result of their shock 2-0 defeat in Poland. Ireland, of course, lost 6-1 at home and 3-0 away to the Germans under Giovanni Trapattoni during the last World Cup qualifying campaign and headed out of Dublin yesterday afternoon in optimistic mood – but preparing for a backlash. Roy Keane, however, was not unduly surprised at Germany’s setback in Warsaw. He said: ‘Poland are a decent team. We have said that from day one, it’s a tough group. We said Germany, obviously, were probably favourites, but the Poles are very good, big and strong, they have got (Robert) Lewandowski – they’re a good team.’ Manager Martin o’neill did not involve Glenn Whelan, Stephen Quinn, Jon Walters or Shane Long, all of whom played some part in Georgia last month, against Gibraltar as he used the depth of his squad, and he now faces a series of decisions ahead of a much sterner test. even Robbie Keane admits he is not necessarily guaranteed a place in the starting line-up. He said: ‘Listen, everyone wants to play, there’s no question, but the manager has to pick what’s right for the team. as long as we get a result, I couldn’t care less.’
