Security fears: Snapchat images have been stolen

by dominiC yeaTman The €8billion company denied its security was at fault and pinned the blame on third-party apps downloaded by users. A spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of this leak. ‘Snapchatters were victimised by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users’ security. ‘We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many removed.’ The leak will pile pressure on Snapchat, which has come under intense scrutiny amid claims it is allowing an epidemic of underage sexting. Earlier this year a group of hackers published the phone numbers of 4.6million Snapchat users in the US, claiming they wanted to raise awareness of security issues.

Half may be pics from child accounts AT LEAST 200,000 Snapchat photos – some of children as young as 13 – have been stolen and posted online by hackers, along with some usernames. Many of the nude images appeared on the Internet message board 4chan, where stolen explicit images of Jennifer Lawrence were posted last month. The app allows users – at least half aged 13 to 17 – to send photos which are supposed to be automatically deleted within seconds. But it is feared hackers have been collecting images for years after accessing a Snapchat client app containing a 13GB library of messages which people thought had been wiped.

Church changes tone on gay rights THE CATHOLIC Church revealed a dramatic shift yesterday with the release of a Vatican document which stated that homosexuals had ‘gifts and qualities to offer’ and asked if Catholicism could accept gay people and recognise positive aspects of same-sex couples. Roman Catholic gay rights groups around the world hailed it as a breakthrough, but church conservatives called it a betrayal of traditional family values. The document, prepared after an assembly of bishops, said the

church should challenge itself to find ‘a fraternal space’ for homosexuals without compromising its doctrine on family. While the text did not signal any change in the church’s condemnation of homosexual acts or gay marriage, it used less judgmental and more compassionate language than that seen prior to the 2013 election of Pope Francis. ‘Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a further space in

our communities?’ asked the document. ‘Are our communities capable of accepting and valuing their sexual orientation without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?’ it asked. The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (Glen) here welcomed the document, saying: ‘We hope that the Vatican and the Irish Catholic Church will take the opportunity to support current proposals by the Irish Government to bring legal certainty and security to these families.’

Workers to get respite in Budget 2015

Ireland’s hard-pressed taxpayers are set for the first easing of austerity in seven years when tax cuts are announced in today’s payback budget. October 14, 2014, will go down as a watershed in a painstaking economic recovery, four years since a banking collapse bankrupted the state and less than a year after emerging from a multi-billion euro international bailout. The most significant change for workers will be a cut of 1 per cent in the top rate of tax to 40 per cent. Insiders said families and middle-income earners will be boosted with the threshold on when the higher levy kicks in set to rise by €1,000 to €33,800. sources also confirmed the longawaited respite will spread to the deeply unpopular Universal social Charge (UsC) – a burdensome tax on all earners. an optimistic report published last week looks set to pave the way for last-minute reform of the UsC bands – currently the first €10,036 has a 2 per cent levy; the next €5,980 has a 4 per cent levy; and there is a 7

per cent charge on anything over that. ‘There is now significant room for manoeuvre, more than people thought initially,’ a source said. The easing of tax on earnings means the Government is essentially banking on increased disposable income driving consumer spending. exports are already well above forecasts, and advisers and regulators have offered glowing reports on the economic recovery in the last month, with one suggesting Ireland will have the fastest growing economy in europe next year. elsewhere, it has been privately conceded that a tax credit or relief will be introduced to alleviate the cost of newly imposed water charges. Finance Minister Michael noonan takes to his feet in the dáil at 2.30pm followed by a second speech by Minister for Public expenditure and reform Brendan Howlin, to outline spending plans for 2015.

A DUBLIN crèche at the centre of an RTÉ investigation last year is now being prosecuted for breaking child protection laws. The Links Creche and Montessori Ltd, and its director Deirdre Kelly, are to go on trial as a result of the TV documentary Breach Of Trust. The producers of the programme provided the Child and Family Agency (CFA) with more than three dozen hours of secretly filmed footage which is to form a major part of the prosecution’s case. The CFA alleges that the crèche breached regulations by not preventing practices that were ‘disrespectful, degrading or exploitative’, Judge John O’Neill heard at Dublin District Court yesterday. The Links Crèche and Montessori Ltd, at Abington Wood, Malahide, and Ms Kelly, from Saint Olaves, Kinsealy, are charged with breaking the Childcare Act and pre-school services regulations. On conviction, the court can impose fines of up to €1,300 as well as suspending one from running a childcare facility.

Dewani was a ‘single gay man’ on site SUSPECTED murder conspirator Shrien Dewani described himself on a dating website as a ‘single gay man’. The businessman, accused of hiring a hitman to kill his wife, used the profile Asiansubguy, and chose ‘gay’ as his orientation, according to Simon Johnson, a former manager at the site. Mr Dewani also selected ‘no’ in the section asking if he had disclosed his sexuality publicly. Mr Johnson told the court in Cape Town Mr Dewani’s profile indicated he was looking for a single gay man, a single bi man, a gay couple or a group.

Breath tests in pubs ‘stop pre-loaders’ INCREASING numbers of latenight UK pubs are bringing in breathalysers to prevent ‘preloaded’ customers from being allowed on to their premises. Venues have introduced the equipment in order to help avoid clashes when door staff decide whether a person is too drunk to enter. The crackdown follows the increasingly popular practice in which people drink large quantities of cheaper alcohol at home before heading for their town’s pubs and clubs.

Banksy mural ruined by notso-clever Dick

Banksy’s Art Buff has been defaced just two weeks after it appeared on a wall in a seaside town in the UK. A vandal with rather less skill than the anonymous graffiti star has spray-painted a large penis on to its plinth. Visitors have flocked to admire the stencil-style ‘guerilla’ art in Payers Park, Kent, England. The damage is not permanent because clear plastic sheeting was placed over the work.

Ebola ‘world’s most acute health crisis’ of our time The ebola outbreak is ‘the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times’, the World health Organisation (WhO) has said. But economic disruptions can be curbed if people are kept adequately informed to prevent irrational moves to dodge infection, it added. Director-general Margaret Chan said World Bank figures show 90 per cent of the economic costs of any outbreak ‘come from irrational and disorganised efforts of the public to avoid infection’. Last month, UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon urged leaders in the most affected countries to establish special centres that aim to isolate infected people from non-infected relatives in an effort to stem the spread of ebola. The ebola epidemic has killed more than 4,000 people, mostly in the West African countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to WhO figures published last week.

AN AIRLINE pilot and a crooked lawyer plotted with pals to rake in more than £30million (€38m) by taking out multiple bogus mortgages on strangers’ homes in the UK. The four men conned lenders by pretending to buy homes of householders who were unaware their properties were being used in the scam. Victims lost their homes and the solicitors’ firm where the lawyer was a partner went bust, with the loss of 70 jobs, as a result of the conspiracy. Sentencing the gang following a 26-week trial, Judge Martin Beddoe told them: ‘This was very well orchestrated, professional offending over a long period of time, using and abusing the identities of others.’ Virgin Airways pilot

Dr Lore Hartzenberg gave the testimony ahead of Pistorius’ sentencing for culpable homicide, and it was almost immediately characterised by the chief prosecutor as lacking balance. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel also expressed shock after a defence witness suggested Pistorius be sentenced to occasional house arrest and community Waiting: Pistorius service for shooting dead his girlfriend. after Dr Hartzenberg described how Pistorius had suffered since the Valentine’s Day killing last year, Mr Nel noted that the double-amputee athlete likely still has the chance to rebuild his life and possibly continue his career, whereas reeva steenkamp is dead and her family is devastated. ‘We are now dealing with a broken man, but he is still alive,’ the prosecutor said. He asked the psychologist what she knew about Ms steenkamp. ‘Do you know anything about her dreams, what she wanted to do in life?’ he said. Later a social worker from south africa’s correctional services department, who was also called to testify by defence lawyers, suggested Pistorius should serve a three-year correctional supervision sentence for negligently shooting Ms steenkamp. that would include periods of house arrest but no prison time,

by cHRisTOPHER TORcHiA and allow Pistorius to train and attend athletics meets again. Mr Nel said that suggested sentence was ‘shockingly inappropriate’ and described it as ‘no sentence’. Judge thokozile Masipa was hearing evidence on the first day of Pistorius’ sentencing hearing, which is expected to last several days. after listening to testimony from witnesses called by both the defence and prosecution, Judge Masipa will decide on Pistorius’ sentence. it can range from a suspended jail sentence and a fine to as many as 15 years in prison. Judge Masipa last month found Pistorius, 27, guilty of culpable homicide but not guilty of both premeditated murder and murder in his killing of Ms steenkamp at his home. several police officers stood guard on the dais where the judge sat yesterday amid concerns about her security. Judge Masipa’s verdict last month drew criticism from some south africans who thought Pistorius should at least have been convicted of a lesser murder charge on the grounds that he knew a person could die when he fired four bullets through a toilet door and into a small cubicle, killing Ms steenkamp. Prosecutors said Pistorius had opened fire in anger after the couple argued. the runner testified that he mistook Ms steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and budding reality tV star, for an intruder who was about to come out of the toilet and attack him. Dr Hartzenberg said the athlete had lost the woman he loved, his reputation, friends, his income and sense of self-worth after what he said was an accidental killing.

Man admits to Cork cocaine plot

8th arrest made in murder inquiry

A MAN has admitted to being involved in a plot to smuggle around €127million in cocaine into the UK. Stephen Powell, 47, from West Yorkshire, England was charged with conspiracy to import cocaine following the seizure of around a tonne of the drug on board a yacht off the coast of Cork last month, in an international operation involving the Irish Naval Service. Powell pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared by video link at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. Powell’s father John Powell, 70, Benjamin Mellor, 35, and Thomas Britteon, 28, were also charged by An Garda Síochána with possessing cocaine with intent to import after they were detained on the yacht. They have appeared at Cork District Court.

GARDAÍ investigating a murder in Clondalkin have made a further arrest, it was confirmed. A 25-year-old man was last night being detained at Ronanstown Garda Station. His arrest brings to eight the number of people that have been questioned in the investigation into the murder of Dean Johnson in west Dublin in August of last year. The 21year-old was shot dead at Harelawn Green in Clondalkin on August 24, 2013. Mr Johnson was initially wounded in the upper torso before falling to the ground. The gunman fired another 13 shots into Mr Johnson, mostly to his head. Gardaí are still conducting searches in Dublin and Kildare in connection with the incident.

Democracy no ‘charade’ even if TDs complain that it is...

I

have just heard an independent TD on radio declare democracy in this country to be just ‘a charade’. This is a democratic republic, set up after nearly 800 years of colonial rule, in which all have the right to vote. Yet the declaration that this democracy is ‘a charade’ was unchallenged by the interviewer on the radio programme. at a time when two independent TDs were elected to the Dáil, I hope they have more appreciation of the privilege each of them enjoyed when they were elected to represent the rest of us. I also hope that they do not regard their election as ‘a charade’. In addition, our media should show more appreciation of the position they hold. They should challenge any attempt to demean the freedoms both the media and the rest of us enjoy in this democracy. A Leavy ■ Dear emer, I apologise if I misled you in what I said. I was not belittling what happened to the dog, nor making light of animal cruelty. My point was that animals

(whether a dog or hamster) should not have the same rights or justice as a human child. People have value and worth far above animals. Is it any wonder why so many of our young people suffer from depression and contemplate suicide when they are told their life has no more meaning than an amoeba and they have as much value as an animal? Big D, Dun Laoghaire ■ I would like to make a point about the figures for Saturday’s march. I was in town and so were a lot of angry people who made their anger known by slowly walking on the road for an hour while holding signs that said things like ‘Monasterboice says no’ and chanting things like ‘Bob Geldof didn’t die for this’. If that doesn’t make the fat cats in Cabinet listen, nothing will. In an attempt to cross O’Connell Street, I inadvertently became, for some time, a part of this protest. My fear is that when the crowd was being estimated they included me, when really I was just a bystander with no issue paying for things. Eamonn

Complete chocolate satisfaction Chloe Scott tries top recipes to make the ultimate chocolate and raspberry tart

TOP Of THE cHOcs

Use chocolate with a high cocoa content (75 per cent or over) for baking. Green & Black’s or chef’s favourite Valrhona will give good results and both use cocoa beans from reputable origins.

iving with a chocoholic can be tricky. My husband is so addicted to the stuff that regardless of where i hide my own stash for those times when i fancy a nibble, he will sniff it out with all the skill of a bloodhound. This inevitably leaves me having to go without because he’s wolfed it down behind my back. in an effort to satisfy his craving – and buy me some time to find a better spot to squirrel away my own supply – i decide to investigate how to make the perfect chocolate and raspberry tart.

There are a few options for the case – rich buttery pastry, pâte sablée, shortcrust, gingernuts even. Fragile little fellows Raspberries are fragile and should be handled with care. They are also highly perishable so remove any mushy ones before refrigerating and eat within a day or two. They freeze very well and your best bet is to spread a single layer on a tray and freeze until solid before transferring to single

portion freezer bags. Raspberries are prone to becoming oming damaged and misshapen if wet. If you’re going to be serving them whole, it’s best not to wash them if you want them looking pretty.

All i can do is select the best looking fruit and cross my fingers. The key is to choose plump and brightly coloured fruit, as raspberries do not continue to ripen once picked. Avoid berries with their hulls intact as they will be under-ripe and tart. As with all berries, check raspberries for signs of mould or spoilage.

Lanlard and Corrigan have simple ways of making ganache filling – gently heat cream and melt in dark chocolate. That’s it. Corrig Corrigan’s is a real choc-fest – 200ml of double cream and 400g of dark chocolate. Lanlard uses 200g of dark chocolate with the same amount of single cream. The big release Alien: isolAtion 18 (360/PS3/XO/PS4/PC)

F

ilm-makers generally have a tricky time with sequels and prequels, juggling the crushing weight of fan expectations and greedy studios hell-bent on making massive profits. Video game developers walk a similar tightrope. so when plans were announced to resurrect the alien franchise, you could hear the collective groans from diehard devotees. However, unlike previous outing aliens: Colonial marines, alien: isolation focuses on the narrative and disturbing moodiness that propelled the original movies into the sci-fi stratosphere. The aim of the game here isn’t to mow down as many Facehuggers and Xenomorphs as humanly possible but instead to stealthily survive the clutches of a lone, deadly alien. The story picks up where the original film left off, in so much as warrant officer ellen ripley’s daughter amanda is tasked with tracking down the flight recorder of her mother’s doomed Nostromo ship that vanished some 15 years earlier. amanda ripley must scour space station sevastopol – a much larger setting than Nostromo, but brilliantly recreated with the same retro-futuristic tech alien fans will be familiar with – in search of clues to her mother’s fate. Fans of the survival horror genre will not be disappointed with alien: isolation, which requires stealth, patience and silence if gamers are to avoid becoming a prawn

Great scott! the visual setting of the game is a faithful rendering of Ridley scott’s film classic cocktail starter for a hungry Xenomorph. This should also please fans of the alien big-screen outings as the dark, eerie and sometimes unsettling setting of the sevastopol ship sticks rigidly to ridley scott’s most famous of extra-terrestrial visions. Original cast members, including sigourney Weaver, have also loaned their voices to ramp up the realism further. it’s so creepy in fact, playing it in the dark with the sound turned up is inadvisable, especially for the generation with an ingrained fear of monsters from outer space.

Park City, Utah, has been bought by Vail Resorts for a cool €144million (in cash!). By doing so it becomes the latest resort to join the Epic Pass, which includes many of the US’s biggest ski venues. big match battles: ireland v germany

fOOTbALL DigEsT

THE Republic of Ireland take their 100 per cent Group D record to Germany tonight looking to cement a dream start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. However, the reigning world champions will be desperate to bounce back from their shock 2-0 defeat by Poland on Saturday evening and Gelsenkirchen will be no place for the faint-hearted. Here, Metro Herald Sport looks at the men who may hold the key.

Welcome sight: Walcott yesterday

DAViD fORDE v THOMAs MuLLER

Concentration was the only issue for Ireland keeper Forde (left) during the 7-0 demolition of Gibraltar on Saturday with only one save of note to make, although he knows he is likely to be far busier in Gelsenkirchen. Muller (right), playing as a lone striker, passed up a series of opportunities to find the back of the net against the Poles as he and his teammates piled on the pressure without success, and the Republic are unlikely to be able to rely upon a repeat of that wastefulness.

Theo return set to hand Arsene boost THEO WALCOTT returned to Arsenal training yesterday following his lengthy absence with a knee injury. The forward has not played since January and the 25-year-old’s imminent return provides a boost for the Gunners, who lost Mesut Ozil to a knee injury last week. Serge Gnabry, who has been out since March with his own knee problem, is also back in training. Meanwhile, boss Arsene Wenger revealed Olivier Giroud is ‘ahead of schedule’ as he recovers from his fractured tibia.

AiDEN McgEADY v ERiK DuRM

McGeady was Ireland’s hero in the opening qualifier in Georgia, where he scored both goals in a 2-1 victory, the second at the death. His direct approach will give Martin O’Neill’s men an outlet on a night when they will be forced to defend for long periods. Full-back Durm may have something to prove after being levered off the ball by Robert Lewandowski during the build-up to the Sebastian Mila strike which sealed Poland’s famous win.

Ethics chief hits out at Fifa secrecy FIFA’S chief ethics investigator Michael Garcia has criticised the culture of secrecy at the world governing body and called for greater transparency. Garcia, who has been investigating the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, said he had been operating under conditions more suitable for ‘an intelligence agency’. He called on Fifa to publish a report on the findings which president Sepp Blatter fears would threaten witness confidentiality. Garcia said: ‘Transparency is not intended to embarrass certain individuals by airing dirty laundry. It’s the opposite.’

Keane wrote himself into football’s history books when his hattrick against the Gibraltarians took him to 21 European Championship qualifying goals and 65 for his country in total. Chances are likely to be in

far shorter supply in Germany, but the LA Galaxy frontman will need no second invitation if provided with an opening. Hummels and his defensive colleagues were unusually porous against the Poles and manager Joachim Löw will be looking for a big improvement as the Germans attempt to get their campaign back on track.

Löw hoping germany can return to heights by pARAic MORgAN

Germany boss Joachim Löw has warned his players they have gone from hunter to prey since winning the World Cup. Low’s men head into euro 2016 battle with the republic of Ireland in Gelsenkirchen tonight having ended a 33-game unbeaten run with a 2-0 defeat in Poland on Saturday, a result which followed a friendly loss to argentina and a narrow victory over Scotland. But while the manager insists the weight of success is not a burden for his team, he admits the label does serve to inspire whoever they come up against. Löw said: ‘The difficulties we are experiencing at the moment are of a type that we have experienced many times before. But generally speaking, I don’t think the position now is any more difficult than it’s always been. ‘We used to be the hunter; now we are the prey. We know that teams like Scotland will play with incredible motivation against us – but that was true even after [the World Cup in] 2010 and [euro] 2012. ‘We know the situation, we know how to get by it, but it’s no different now than it used to be.’ Germany remain favourites to top the group and will expect to right the wrongs of Warsaw against an Ireland team which has collected maximum points from a trip to Georgia and a 7-0 demolition of Gibraltar. ‘If you ask me what is the mood like now, fury is the wrong word, anger is the wrong word. But what you can feel is some kind of determination, that we really badly want these three points against Ireland,’ Löw said. ‘But there is no incredible disappointment

in the team. That would be wrong to say. ‘We have seen both the Irish games and have analysed them, and we can expect some sort of copy of Poland. There’s nothing new to us. The Irish are good fighters, they have commitment and fantastic fighting spirit, and they know how to defend. ‘They are a very well organised team, but at the same time, they have excellent players, like robbie Keane, who is very experienced and has an eye for goal, aiden mcGeady, James mcClean and other players who come from the wings and are very good at dribbling around their opponents. ‘Like Poland, they are very fast on the counter, coming from the wings and putting dangerous crosses in. ‘They come to Germany with self-confidence and with three teams being able to qualify from this group, they are in with a more than reasonable chance of actually making it to France.’ Löw said he would not make many changes, but midfielder Christoph Kramer will be missing through illness with Schalke’s Julian Drax‘Now we are the prey’: ler expected to be Germany boss Löw is wary drafted after himself of Ireland’s ‘fighting spirit’ shaking off a virus.

Robbie: players can’t wait to take on world champions by sAM cOsTELLO Robbie Keane has told the Republic of ireland to forget the nightmares they have suffered at the hands of Germany in the recent past as they attempt to take the biggest of scalps. ireland conceded nine goals, six of them on one horrific night at the aviva Stadium, and scored only once in reply during the last World Cup qualifying campaign, with the Germans running riot on their way to glory in brazil. However, as he prepared to lock horns with Joachim Low’s men once again in a euro 2016 qualifying battle in Gelsenkirchen tonight, Keane insisted all that was history. The 34-year-old Republic skipper said: ‘To be honest with you, i don’t think the players are thinking too much about what happened in the past. We have to concentrate on what we are doing now. ‘We are certainly a different team than we were a few years ago. The players certainly haven’t mentioned it this week.

Injury rules Moore out of Autumn Tests

O’Neill calls for fighting spirit by sAM cOsTELLO republic of ireland manager Martin o’neill knows the scale of the challenge facing his team in Germany tonight – and he’s counting on some fighting spirit to see the boys in Green through. o’neill recognises that ireland will have to change tack from the weekend: ‘i don’t think Germany will allow us the same sort of space to play in. but we are obviously going to encounter many different problems in the game. The Germans are world champions and they have a habit of qualifying for competitions.’ ‘We have our own plan – but best-laid plans can disappear after five minutes in a match. We are going with some confidence into the game. if we are pressed back, then okay, but if we deliberately sit in, then Germany will eventually pick us off. ‘We want to try to attack as well. it’s a

game to relish. it’s one where we want to go out and do something about the game, not just let the game disappear.’ Germany coach löw made a point of mentioning ireland’s ‘fighting spirit’ during his own pre-match press conference, and o’neill was not at all put out by it. ‘i understand that, he’s got a fair amount of fight in his team too. i wouldn’t decry those attributes, in fact, i am quite pleased that he would mention those. We are deficient in certain things, but a bit of fighting spirit, i think, pervades the team and that can help. it will not win you every game you play in, but it’s a grand start,’ he said.

Leinster prop Marty Moore will miss ireland’s Autumn test series after being ruled out of action for 12 weeks. the 23-year-old tighthead suffered a ‘bang on his shoulder’ in Leinster’s 20-3 victory at Zebre. Dublin-born Moore would have competed with Leinster team-mate Mike ross for ireland’s starting tighthead spot in november’s three-test Guinness series. the five-cap front-rower’s absence adds to ireland boss Joe schmidt’s injury problems, with sean O’Brien, Cian Healy and Fergus McFadden all out of action. ‘Marty got a bang on his shoulder,’ said Leinster forwards coach Leo Cullen. ‘He’s with a specialist at the moment but it looks like he’ll be out for around 12 weeks. ‘it’s tough on Marty.
