HOT DiggETy DOg... kARATE kiD CHOppED in fiRsT AppREnTiCE fiRing KARATE black belt Chiles Cartwright became the first Apprentice hopeful to be sacked, as the tenth series of the show got under way last night. The company director heard Alan Sugar say the words: ‘You’re fired,’ after failing to impress in the first task. The 35-year-old’s all-male team lost in a challenge to sell products, including hot dogs, as modelled by fellow contestant Daniel Waving (pictured).

‘I allowed you in this process because I think here’s a man who’s started at the bottom,’ Alan Sugar, 67, told Cartwright before firing him. The all-female team earned £56.80 more than their male counterparts to win the task. But Sugar told them to rethink their team name, Team Decadence, saying it combines ‘decay, decline’, and ‘loads of self-indulgence’. The Apprentice is on BBC1 again tonight at 9pm.

STANDING dangerously close to Mother Nature’s most extreme creations, stormchasers Nicolaus and Daow Wegner make tornados, hurricanes and lightning storms a stunning art form. Photographer Mr Wegner, 34, pictures his 32-year-old wife standing with her back to the camera while the skies look menacing in front of her. The result of their death-defying work is these epic images. They use forecast tools to predict where storms will show up next before chasing them down and waiting for them to materialise. Most of their shots are taken in their home state of Wyoming, US, but

by jACk wiLLiAMs sometimes they travel to neighbouring Montana and Nebraska for shots. The couple admit there is an element of danger in their work. Mrs Wegner said: ‘I’m a little nervous sometimes – I find the experience exciting and scary at the same time. ‘Life is short so I try to enjoy the moment.’ He revealed lightning is the most dangerous element to deal with and has halted their shoots in the past. ‘Daow does well with the danger but if either of us feels unsafe then we pack up and move on,’ he said.

The law will kick in on January 1 next year for new companies, but firms already benefiting from the loophole will have until the end of 2020 to comply with the changes. ‘This proactive change will not bring an end to international tax planning. That requires co-ordinated action by all countries,’ said Mr Noonan. ‘By taking action now and making this change as part of a broader reform of our corporate tax system, we are giving certainty to investors about corporate tax in Ireland for the next decade.’ But the minister trenchantly defended Ireland’s 12.5 per cent corporation tax, which has attracted criticism from European leaders. ‘The 12.5 per cent tax rate never has been and never will be up for discussion,’ he said. Among the ‘old reliables’, 20 cigarettes increased €.40c from midnight, while there is no change to alcohol, petrol and diesel, motor tax or Vehicle Registration Tax. ‘I am not raising any other taxes because I am able to fund the costs of these reforms and incentives through improved tax revenues arising from economic growth and continued expenditure restraint,’ Mr Noonan said.

WHILE Government priority in Budget 2015 was to give relief to the so called ‘squeezed middle’, the verdict from critics is that it will offer little light to struggling households. Analysts with Davy Stockbrokers said the combined cuts for income tax, USC, Vat and excise will, on balance, make little change to household finances. And Sinn Féin finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty described the Budget as ‘deeply disappointing’ and said it did ‘nothing for struggling families’. He said: ‘A low-paid worker on €30,000 will gain €174 – less than the lowest possible water charge bill of €176. ‘A middle-income earner on €50,000 will gain €546 – all of which will be wiped out by property tax and water charge bills.’ Fianna Fail said it was a budget ‘all about using borrowed money to buy votes’. Poverty campaigners St Vincent de Paul said any benefits from tax cuts will be wiped out by both the

by ORNA cUNNiNGHAM new utility bill and property taxes. And the Unite and Mandate trade unions were also critical, Mandate general secretary John Douglas said: ‘To claim this is the end of austerity is disingenuous at best.’ Unite said it was recovery for a few, continued squeeze for the rest. Meanwhile, a pledge for the creation of thousands of jobs through a €2.2bn social housing building plan was welcomed by the Construction Industry Federation. Its director general, Tom Parlon, described the announcement as deeply significant. However, teachers’ union the INTO was not impressed with the announcement of more than 1,000 new teaching positions to ease pressures in education, which includes 920 new teachers, as well as 480 resource staff and 365 special needs assistants. Noonan teaches rowdy Dáil a lesson THERE were more deep sighs than deep cuts yesterday as Budget 2015 was announced, but there was plenty of hacking – and most of it was coming from Michael Noonan. The Finance Minister delivered his speech at a trot, carefully measuring his words as he no doubt weighed our needs in recent weeks. But a 5ml measure of Calpol seemed like a much more immediate need for Mr Noonan as

he phlegmed, spluttered and choked his way through pronouncements about next year’s rates, initiatives and spending plans. It was a noisy Budget, delivered in an atmosphere not dissimilar to a rowdy classroom, and indeed Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty was ready for a bit of spelling – although it was intended to aid Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and what he was kindly ‘spelling out’ was

what he called the ‘Government’s failed approach to recovery’. The flustered teacher, sorry, Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett had his work cut out for him: ‘Why do we always have the same voices shouting?’ he asked in exasperation. Mary Lou McDonald, meanwhile, got sent out of ‘class’ for accusing Mr Barrett of ‘bias’. As far as memorable Budget announcements go, top marks.

‘Happy Birthday’ advice for correct handwashing TWo-THirdS of irish adults do not wash their hands sufficiently to kill harmful germs, new research shows. The study carried out by Bon Secours Health System – a private healthcare provider in ireland – found that as many as 67 per cent of people do not scrub their hands for the recommended time of 15 seconds. it comes as healthcare professionals prepare to mark Global Handwashing day today – an initiative which has been shown to educate people in general hygiene, reducing diarrhoeal illnesses and respiratory diseases.

by LUKE HOLOHAn in fact, according to Bon Secours, it is estimated that by following simple handwashing guidelines, illnesses such as common colds can by reduced in the general population by more than 20 per cent. Consultant microbiologist for the health organisation, Helene Mcdermott, said: ‘Global Handwashing day does great work every year, teaching children worldwide about effective handwashing. This survey reminds us that it’s not just

children that can benefit from this’. She added: ‘Washing your hands with soap is still the most effective way to avoid the transmission of harmful germs and prevent health

nose, you are missing a key opportunity to avoid a number of sicknesses. Some 62 per cent of those surveyed said that they did not wash their hands after being on public transport, with 4 per cent happy to admit that they did not soap their mitts after using the toilet. in an easy health tip, the World Health organisation has said that washing your hands properly should take as long as singing Happy Birthday twice, while lathering the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails, is key.

Children’s heart operations in ireland are set to be delivered on a cross-border basis from a single centre in dublin, ministers north and south have announced. The joint policy statement from stormont health Minister Jim Wells and his counterpart in the republic, leo Varadkar, will bring an end to scheduled paediatric heart surgery in Belfast. While surgical services will cease in Belfast, a cardiac centre of excellence will be set up in the city to provide diagnostics and aftercare to children with congenital heart defects. The single all-ireland surgical unit will be based in Our lady’s Children’s hospital at Crumlin, dublin. The plan – subject to public consultation – is in line with recommendations made by an international working group commissioned to examine the issue of children’s cardiac services in ireland by Mr Wells and Mr Varadkar’s respective predecessors in office, edwin Poots and dr James reilly. some 400 children a year in the republic require heart surgery. in the north, the number is around 140.

€22k for girl who was hit by chair A 14-yeAr-old schoolgirl who received head and arm injuries when a chair was swung at her by another pupil in a classroom, has been awarded €22,500 damages in the Circuit Civil Court. Barrister Tony McKeown told the court that Chloe Joyce, who was 11 at the time, was in a classroom with other pupils at rutland National School, lower Gloucestor Place, dublin, when the accident happened in May 2012. Mr McKeown said some pupils had been noisy as they were ready

to go on a break and one of them had swung a chair which hit Chloe on the arm. She fell to the ground, striking her head. She was later taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital for X-rays and then discharged. Mr McKeown told Judge Carmel Stewart that Chloe was recalled the following day to A&e. Further X-rays showed a non-displaced fracture of her elbow and a back slab had been applied to it. He said Chloe had been shocked by the accident and had experienced

discomfort when doing dance routines which involved handstands. She has now recovered fully from her injury. Through her mother, Geraldine Joyce, of o’Brien Hall, lower Gardiner Street, dublin, she sued the trustees and board of management of rutland Street National School alleging negligence and breach of duty. Judge Stewart approved a settlement offer of €22,500 which had been made by the board of the school.

60 seconds irish girls among ‘most influential’ WiLLiAM H MAcy, 64, was nominated for an Oscar for Fargo and stars in the US version of Shameless. He’s now a voice in acclaimed Japanese film The Wind Rises

You don’t seem like an animated-film voice actor. Is this something new for you?

I’ve been doing voice-overs pretty much my whole career. The commercial voice-overs have really paid my way, particularly when I was a poor New York City actor. I got a couple of big accounts that really allowed me to do all the offBroadway plays I jolly well pleased. I seem to have somewhat distinctive pipes, so that helps.

Is this type of work effortless?

It’s one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever had because it’s acting but not really. You’ll have the line ‘there he goes’ and they’ll ask you to say it 25 times in every different way you can think of.

What’s the film about? It’s

‘Yo, Frank!’ I ride a motorcycle and when I have my helmet on you can see from my eyebrows to the bottom of my nose and I still get recognised. I don’t know how people do it but they do.

This has been such a defining role for you comparatively late in your career. Are you still loving it? I’m in my third

act, as my wife [Desperate Housewives’ Felicity Huffman] likes to remind me. And yes, I love it. The show has continued to grow. We’re now in our fifth season and every year we add viewership, which is very gratifying, and job security. I think I’ve got a job!

by ORnA cunningHAM THREE Irish girls have made Time’s annual list of the most influential teens, the magazine said yesterday. Cork trio Ciara Judge, 16, Emer Hickey, 17, and Sophie Healy-Thow, 17, were noted for their discovery of bacteria that deposits nitrogen from the atmosphere into soil. The teens won the global science research competition at the Google Science Fair last month for their finding. The teens are in good company: uS first daughters Malia, 16, and Sasha, 13; Grammy-winning New Zealand singer lorde, 17; and Nobel Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai, 17, were also on the unranked list dominated by 20 females. Time said it compiled its list of 25 teens by analysing their social media following, business successes and cultural importance. The youngest were Sasha Obama and fellow 13year-old Mo’ne Davis, a pitching sensation who led her Philadelphia boys’ baseball team to the little league World Series and landed a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

What else have you been up to?

I just directed an episode of Shameless, the first time I’ve directed any television. It is a stunning amount of work. For three weeks it was all I ate, dreamt and slept. Here’s the good news: I loved every minute of it, and I’m still alive. Oh my God, it was fun.

I’m American top to bottom but I’ve identified my grandmother’s Somerville plaid. I bought a tam-o’shanter and I look pretty good in it although now my hair’s really long so I look like Hayley Mills.

Hacking claims are Dublin Zoo pleads denied by Dropbox guilty in tapir case ClOuD storage site Dropbox has moved to deny claims it has been hacked after an anonymous account posted what it claims is the username and passwords of hundreds of the site’s users. An anonymous post to website Pastebin – traditionally used to save text users would like to paste elsewhere later – contained a list of hundreds of email log-ins and passwords the hacker claimed were linked to Dropbox accounts. The post claimed that more than 6.9million Dropbox accounts had been hacked. However, Dropbox has moved to deny that its service has been compromised. The company’s Anton Mityagin said this was an attempt to gain money from stolen data found elsewhere online.

DUBLIN Zoo has been ordered by Dublin District Court to donate €5,000 to charity in relation to an incident in August last year in which a woman and a toddler were attacked by a Brazilian tapir. The visitors were on a ‘supervised animal encounter’ at the time. Two investigations arose out of the incident, one by the Health and Safety Authority and a separate one by an external agency appointed by Dublin Zoo. The Zoological Society of Ireland apologised for the ‘deeply regrettable incident’ and pleaded guilty to a failure to implement the most recent risk assessment for the tapir habitat on August 8, 2013. The case returns to court on December 8.

Nurse ‘killed 38 grumblers’

INDIA: A cyclone has killed at least 24 people and demolished tens of thousands of mud huts. Cyclone Hudhud devastated Andhra Pradesh and Orissa along the eastern coast, forcing 400,000 people to leave their homes. Forecasters have warned that heavy rainfall will hit six more states as it moves further inland.

ITALy: A nurse has been arrested on suspicion of killing 38 patients because she found them annoying. Daniela Poggiali, 42, was held in the town of Lugo after a patient in her care died unexpectedly. Rosa Calderoni, 78, died after a potassium injection, triggering an investigation that implicated Poggiali in dozens of deaths.

The World Health Organisation said the number of ebola cases in West Africa would exceed 9,000 this week and the epidemic was still spreading in the region. The nurse who contracted ebola while caring for a dying Liberian in a dallas hospital said yesterday she is doing well, while uS officials redouble efforts to stop the deadly virus spreading. Nina Pham, a 26-year-old Vietnamese-American, became the first person infected by ebola in the uS while caring for the Liberian for much of his 11 days in Texas Presbyterian Hospital. He died last Wednesday. Actually, democracy is a charade with no one accountable

M

r Leavy, a World Bank study of 36 countries a couple of years ago rated Ireland second-last for parliamentary oversight of budgetary process. Out of ten, Ireland scored zero and a one-out-of-ten in other aspects of our parliamentary processes. Given the Dáil cannot hold the Government to account and the Government cannot hold the economic Management Council to account – and this is only one example of how our ‘democracy’ and our ‘republic’ operates – exactly how do you explain your position? Have you been paying any attention since 2008? DM

■ To a disgruntled public, I offer my rather sarcastic salutations, for you have once again driven me closer to the misanthropic life I have been fearing. My amazement has been steadily escalating since this ‘water charge’ ruckus began. How people can wholeheartedly stand by their convictions that ‘water is a human right’ and that they should be provided with

it free-of-charge has me astonished. People should be grateful it was provided free for so long because it wasn’t them that built the treatment plants and transport networks that deliver drinkable water from that which is otherwise available. Maybe people should get their buckets out, get their own water, treat it and transport it to their homes if they want to avoid this charge. Maybe we should ask farmers to sow, treat, reap and transport produce to our doors free-of-charge – surely if water is ‘a human right’ then food should be too? Satisfied Customer ■ Big D – what does the D stand for? Is it dunce? you’re an idiot! LD ■ Lads, don’t want to nitpick but on page 23 of yesterday’s edition, you omitted one Irish win against the Germans. It was a preWorld Cup game in May 1994 where Gary Kelly (of all people) scored. To think we nicked a 2-0 performance in a friendly on German soil... Lester

the big interview

On stage: Charlie Murphy in Mark O’Rowe’s play Our Few And Evil Days at the Abbey

Charlie enjoys ane life in fast la Love/Hate star Charlie Murphy tells Pavel Barter about appearing in the nerve-shredding new thriller ’71, another harrowing drama from an actress who’s drawn to the dark side of life

C

HARlIe MuRpHy has never made it easy for herself. When making Happy Valley, BBC One’s dark police thriller, she played a kidnap victim trussed up in a basement. After weeks of filming, Murphy was freed, but she had spent so long with a gag in her mouth she forgot her character’s accent. As gangster’s moll Siobhan in love/ Hate, she has been dragged to hell and back. In ’71, a harrowing new film set during the Northern Irish Troubles, she is forced to restrain a squaddie while his war wound is stitched together. later in the story, she has a gun held to her head – it wasn’t the first time either. ‘My mum told me she wanted to watch Happy Valley,’ she says. ‘I said: “Just be prepared: it’s really dark”. Dad started watching and said: “I don’t think I can do this. Actually, I think I’m going to be sick. This is horrific.”’ The Wexford actress has never shied away from the darker side of life. ’71, director yann Demange’s debut feature, is a gripping journey into the heart of

darkness. The story concerns a soldier, played by Jack O’Connell, who is separated from his platoon and forced to survive a night on the run in Belfast with the IRA in pursuit. Murphy plays Brigid, a local who shows him sympathy and puts her own life at risk in the process. ‘We shot a lot of it overnight, living like vampires. We’d finish at about 6am and go to bed when everyone else was getting up. Having familiar faces on set helped. ’71 also features love/ Hate veterans Barry Keoghan and Killian Scott, who plays Siobhan’s partner Tommy in the RTÉ show. ‘The actors in love/Hate are always crossing paths.’ Murphy is currently on stage at The Abbey Theatre in Mark O’Rowe’s Our Few And evil Days, playing opposite Tom

Vaughan-lawlor (Nidge in love/ Hate). ‘He’s playing my boyfriend, where normally he’s my uncle. We get a kick out of that.’ The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity. O’Rowe’s play opened last week (see review below); ’71 is in cinemas now; and the fifth series of love/Hate is in full swing. The stakes are high for her character in the new series. After Tommy was on the receiving end of Nidge’s wrath, Siobhan is spilling the beans to the police. ‘She’s taking matters into her own hands,’ says Murphy. ‘She’s playing with fire, naively so. There’s an essence of the first series – a carefree attitude she once had, underlined with the idea of becoming an avenging angel. She’s on a mission. This is a season I’m anticipating more than others. Few shows garner as much attention. Whenever love/Hate films on location, photographers usually turn up and rumours abound about plot developments. ‘love/Hate is filmed on the ground: in houses and on the streets. It’s difficult to keep a lockdown and avoid spoilers. I Murphy hardly slacks off between hate scene spoilers. It ruins all the seasons. She has built up a reputation hard work and effort.’ as a dramatic actor on BBC The show, which she has period shows such as The been working on since Village and Ripper 2010, has transformed s, Street and is breaking e im t her career. ‘It’s a e Som from convention with she , s y poisoned chalice. you a s y a role in action Murph hausted get to do so many adventure movie is left ex ionally amazing things with t o m Northmen: A Viking e y b the character. ransom again. She sighs. ‘I know, it’s ridiculous.’ The actress experienced some upsetting nightmares and can be left exhausted from emotionally gruelling performances. ‘I’d be like: “Where did that come from?” It’s obviously there somewhere in my psyche.’ But she prefers to leave the woes of her characters at the stage door. After performances of O’Rowe’s play, she visits friends for a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Murphy’s characters might be tortured individuals, but in real life she prefers to play it straight.

’71 is in cinemas now

Dark tale packs emotional punch Our Few And Evil Days at the Abbey HHHHI

Mark O’Rowe’s sixth play begins in a comfortable home in a Dublin suburb, where Margaret (Sinead Cusack) and Michael (Ciaran Hinds) are entertaining Dennis (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), their daughter Adele’s new boyfriend. Although the scenario – a young man meeting his girlfriend’s parents for the first time – might seem rife with comic potential, there are hints of the disturbing things to come. There’s an absent family member that Adele (Charlie Murphy) has failed to mention, Michael’s

casual boast of a fight won in his youth (he still has the scar) and Margaret’s unorthodox sleeping arrangements... The production – directed by O’Rowe himself – also ratchets up the tension with the unusual technique of plunging the stage into darkness at the end of a scene, with the final sentence – or unanswered question – left hanging dramatically. As an exercise in naturalism, the first half is extremely strong, with perfectly-pitched performances and a cleverly deployed plot twist. Discussing the second act without giving away too much is tricky, but suffice

to say that this is a variant of the Irishfamily with-a-terrible-secret’ trope that’s grim enough to silence the giddiest audience member. The second act is not just a hell of a lot darker, but also performed with a level of emotional intensity that the cast does well to sustain. Unrelenting turmoil and sensational reveals notwithstanding, Our Few And Evil Days is a challenging piece of theatre, underscored by a top-class production. oLLing against sofa cushions as the rain dribbles down the window behind her, South London singersongwriter Jessie Ware is managing to nail a difficult art – looking pretty knackered and absolutely gorgeous at the same time. ‘i’m feeling good,’ she says, sipping from a mug of tea. ‘it’s just i can’t wait for this album to be out – then it will all feel a bit less crazy.’ The singer, who celebrates her 30th birthday today, came relatively late to the showbiz game. She first worked as a journalist and then for a TV production company (where she was a close colleague of Fifty Shades of grey author EL James) before starting out singing backing vocals for her old schoolmate, Jack Peñate. He’s got his head screwed on, he gets it.’ not content with polishing off a sophomore album, in August, Ware found time to marry her partner on the greek island of Skopelos – in a pair of pink shoes inscribed ‘Wifey for Lifey’. But it’s clearly not been easy fitting everything in. ‘it’s not that i have any problems doing promo, i love chatting to people,’ she says. ‘But i get the fear when me promoting an album means me not seeing my friends, not seeing my husband, letting people down. And although they understand, you forget how to enjoy it a bit.’ genuinely humble, Ware is the first interviewee i’ve met who asks me plenty of questions about myself. And although she is rightly proud of her new album, she lacks my conviction that she’s got a mega hit on her hands.

‘i don’t know if it will blow up, you just never know,’ she says. ‘i feel like everyone’s willing me to be this big thing and i get a lovely feeling from that. As long as i can carry on doing this as my job, and people still support the music, i’m all good. i feel the most lucky when i’m on stage – it’s ridiculously special.’

o Twin Peaks is coming back. David Lynch and Mark Frost have announced they are making a third series of the cult classic, to be aired in 2016. i’m excited because i remember exactly where i was when the first episode of Twin Peaks was aired in october 1990. i was in my flat in London with my then-girlfriend. i was immediately immersed in its surreal tale of a murdered american small-town schoolgirl. it was so well-written and acted that my girlfriend and i were in tears within 15minutes, when the devastated Leland Palmer is told of his daughter Laura’s death. not many shows before or since have managed to inject such an instant dose of emotional heft into their first minutes. But even so, why would i so clearly remember the show’s first episode? Many of the great series that followed Twin Peaks stylistically (The sopranos with its dream sequences), thematically (Desperate Housewives’ curdled suburban dreams)

Return: David Lynch

It’s been 24 years since Twin Peaks wove its strange magic but Paul Connolly remembers it like it was yesterday and structurally (Lost’s huge paranormal narrative arc), were favourites of mine too – and they were certainly more recent. But i have no recollection of where i was when i saw their first epi-sodes in quite the same way. i think Twin Peaks left such an impression because it introduced ‘odd’ into modern mainstream TV. Lynch and Frost took the traditional soap opera form and, with careful nudging and violent twisting, reshaped it into something scarily and addictively fresh. and it really was huge. at the time, all my birthday and Christmas presents were Twin Peaks-themed – there was the very steamy secret Diary of Laura Palmer paperback with its exotic hints of lesbianism and threesomes, and even an action figure of special agent Dale Cooper, who was the heart of the show and who loved a ‘damn fine cup of coffee’.

culturally influential. The initially huge audience figures may have plummeted when it became clear just how weird and nasty Lynch’s vision of american small-town life was. Yet those who loved it, really adored it. Can you imagine the revival of any other show generating the amount of hysteria we’ve witnessed over the past couple of days? The real reason for all the excitement and hyperbole is really quite simple. Twin Peaks kickstarted the current golden age of TV. It’s understandable that you feel somehow cheated by her, no doubt wondering if her advice was based on an attraction towards him rather than your best interests. I wanted to show how I conquered my demons She’s had her highs and her lows – now Sadie Frost’s reincarnation as a healthy-living guru makes more sense than you might expect, writes Anna van Praagh

G

IGGLY, bright-eyed and looking far younger than her 49 years, Sadie Frost has the air of a woman in her prime. Dressed from head to toe in her favourite designer, Isabel Marant, and looking as elegant as ever, she sips water in a private room in the Groucho Club on London’s Dean Street and talks excitedly about her latest project, Nourish, a book she has co-written with her sister Holly, a personal trainer, and her good friend Amber, a chef. ‘It’s not about one particular thing, it’s about my whole lifestyle,’ she says of the book, which is part cookbook, part meditation and yoga guide, with lots of beauty and health tips thrown in. ‘We are three people passionate about food, wellbeing and exercise,’ she says. ‘In one way or another, we

have all been on a journey that has involved health issues and struggles with the pressures of life. ‘I wanted to use my part of the book to outline how I conquered my demons, to share what I have learnt from experience in an approachable and unintimidating way.’ Way back at the beginning of the millennium, Sadie was the key player in the Primrose Hill set, which included her best friend Kate Moss, Liam Gallagher and her then husband Jude Law. With her four children (her eldest, Finlay, is from her first marriage to Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp), huge home in Primrose Hill and endlessly glamorous and edgy friends, Frost seemed to have it all. Then it began to implode. First she suffered from postnatal depression, then her two-yearold daughter had to be rushed to hospital after swallowing an ecstasy tablet in Soho House. Law dumped her for Sienna Miller and then came the bombshell that he was wa having an affair with the children’s children’ nanny, nann Daisy Wright. ‘Like any family, there are ups and downs but we’ve we’ always come out the other side. Do the spinal twist

Our eyes can be one of the first places to show signs of ageing. To keep them toned and reduce sagging muscles and crow’s feet, try these yoga facial exercises. Take a deep breath in and keep your head in its normal position. Without moving your head, look up as high as you can. Hold the pose for 5-10 seconds.

Yoga

The ardha matsyendrasana, also known as the half spinal twist, is very beneficial for both the liver and the spleen. When you inhale you are breathing fresh new life and then letting everything that is stale and old be washed away by the exhalation. Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Now bend both your knees and put your feet flat on the floor. Slide your right foot under your left leg, all the way to the outside of your left hip. Gently lay the right side of your leg on the floor. Take your left foot and step it over the right leg. Stand it on the floor beside your right hip. Your left knee should be pointing to the ceiling. Exhale and half twist your spine towards your left thigh. Put your left hand behind you on the floor by your left buttock. Put your right upper arm on the outside of your left thigh near the knee. Keep your tail bone lengthened and make sure your left foot stays firmly in contact with the floor. Turn your head in the direction of the twist and breathe deeply here.

Meditation

Meditation is something I struggled with in the beginning but I persevered. The benefits are endless, including better emotional balance, lower blood pressure, reduced PMS and a stronger immune system. There are many styles of meditation practice and it may take you a few tries until you find one that suits you. I would suggest you meditate for ten to 20minutes daily and commit to practising for 21 days to give yourself the best chance to experience the benefits. You could begin by trying a mantra meditation in which you mentally repeat a calming word, sound or mantra that will take you away from your busy thoughts. Sit upright with your spine straight. You can either kneel, cross your legs or sit on a chair with your feet on the floor. Place your hands, palms turned upwards, on your thighs or knees. Inhale and exhale, slowly and deeply, three times. Focus on relaxing your body as you breathe out. Your eyes can be open or closed; I prefer to close them. Focus on mentally repeating your mantra. Your mind will wander and when you notice that it has, just gently bring your attention back to your mantra.

which has been written and directed by women. She also has a new boyfriend, the millionaire mobile phone boss Darren Strowger, though, she says coyly, they are ‘not living together’. I don’t know if it’s the Maca and turmeric smoothies she raves about or her daily walks in the park with her dogs but Frost seems like a woman at the top of her game – and if I’m going to take lifestyle advice from anyone, I think it might just be her.

Get set to meet the super cool karate king sex god

Comedian and actor Judah Friedlander, who has appeared in Meet The Parents and Zoolander, is best known for playing the boorish Frank Rossitano in Tv’s 30 Rock. He brings his offbeat stand-up show World Champion to Dublin tonight IN YOUR live show you perform in character as a ‘super cool karate king and sex god’. How would you describe your stand-up schtick to somebody who might only know you from 30 Rock? I’m not good at describing myself but I think that you’re going to see something different. My act is very much a persona-driven affair with a mix of jokes and lots of coming-up-with-stuff-onthe-spot. There’ll be a lot of satirising of American culture and politics. This is my first time in Dublin but I did the Kilkenny Cat Laughs last year so I’m excited to be coming back. To me Ireland is extremely high, if not the highest, on the comedy charts. How did you get cast in 30 Rock? I started doing stand up in 1989 and from the mid-1990s I began doing a lot of TV commercials and guests spots on TV shows and little parts in movies. My first movie was Meet The Parents which I had a small part in so I got a lot of exposure from that. Many of the cast of 30 Rock had their roles written for them by Tina Fey but I auditioned for mine and, er, got it! You’ve appeared in films including Zoolander and The Wrestler, as well as cult B-movies about noxious super heroes (The Toxic Avenger) and shark-sporting hurricanes (Sharknado 2). Do you have a preference for comic fare? Well, I still feel like I’m in the Rocky I phase of my career. Stand up is my main thing – and has been for 24 years – and I do shows every night so it’s my goal to become more of a household name as a comedian. There are two kinds of movies I love to do. I love exploitation flicks and crazy low-budget movies like The Toxic Avenger. I recently had a little part in Sharknado 2 and I love stuff like that. I also want to do live shows that are subversive and political but still fall within the cult remit. But I also want to produce my own serious-yet-funny documentaries. You managed to do stand-up shows almost every single night while filming 30 Rock. How did you juggle both? 30 Rock was filmed like a movie so it would take us six and a half days – working 14 hours a day – to film just one episode. But I wasn’t necessarily there all day every day because we shot it out of sequence so if there was an episode where I didn’t have too many lines I would usually have one or two days off.

As something of a veteran, what do you think of the current crop of Hollywood comedies? I think American TV over the past seven or eight years has gotten a little better but movies have gotten much worse. The movies look sharp, they look snazzy but usually they are cookiecutter flicks. They feel like they’ve been made by robots. Only a few times a year will you see an American movie where you can actually see the director’s imprint on the film. Usually it looks like anybody could have directed it. The biggest movie of the year is Transformers 4, made by robots for robots... ARSENAL chief executive Ivan Gazidis has admitted replacing manager Arsene Wenger will be a huge challenge for the club. Wenger, who has been in charge at the Gunners for 18 years, signed a new three-year deal in May after ending a nine-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup. However, Gazidis said the club have been planning for life without their ‘giant’ of a manager. He said: ‘So much of the attention on a football club is around an individual and that’s very understandable at Arsenal because we have a giant who’s managing us. ‘Arsene has been a fantastic driver and has put the club in a great, great position. ‘The biggest challenge we are going to face as a club is that, when that transition from Arsene to the next

manager of our football club happens – and I don’t know when that’s going to be – that we come through that strongly.’ Gazidis, who has been in his post for six years, wants Arsenal to join the world’s elite in the future and is confident the club has the right tools in place to achieve this goal. He added: ‘I wouldn’t be doing this job if I didn’t believe we could compete at the very top level. I know Arsene feels the same way. Where we are currently is off the shoulder of the world’s top teams. ‘I think the best teams in the world are in Europe and you think about the great names like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. I don’t think we’re at that level yet but that’s where we’re aiming to get to. ‘It’s one thing to say that, it’s another thing to be able to deliver it.’

Contenders: The bookies’ favourites to replace Wenger, above, at Arsenal are Jurgen Klopp, top, roberto Martinez, middle, and Pep Guardiola

‘I put the team ahead of any personal success’ recognition of the good work you have done,’ said Suarez, who is due to receive the Golden Shoe for being Europe’s jointleading scorer from former Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish this week. ‘But I put the team ahead of that and last season Liverpool came so close to winning the Premier League, which would have been spectacular.’ Suarez added: ‘I appreciate all the work that the team did but I missed six matches and scored all those goals in the Premier League without being the penalty-taker. ‘The truth is that I left very happy because if I hadn’t had the attitude and mentality to want to lead the team forward, I don’t think Liverpool would have done as well as they did either. ‘Getting back in the Champions League was another target I had in mind from the start of the season.’

Evra racism claims still leave Luis feeling aggrieved LuIS SuArEz has again denied racially abusing former Manchester united defender Patrice Evra in October 2011. The former Liverpool striker, 27,

who makes his debut next week against real Madrid, said: ‘When I say I’m sorry it’s because I regret something. But they have also sometimes

judged me on things that aren’t true, such as the racism thing. I was accused without evidence and that’s what grieved me the most.’

Andy: Irons can strike Euro gold with move ANDY CARROLL believes West Ham’s Olympic Stadium move in 2016 can bring Champions League football to the club. The Hammers, who have not played in Europe since 2006, are to leave Upton Park for the stadium that hosted the 2012 Olympics in

two years. And Carroll (pictured) thinks the move will see the club

League in the new stadium,’ the striker said. ‘The quality is

O’shea saves ireland at the death GERMAnY...........................................1 REpuBLIC Of IRELAnD.....................1 by sAM cOsTELLO RePubLiC Of iReLAND manager Martin O’Neill was quick to dismiss talk of a German crisis in the run-up to last night’s game, but his team added to opposite number Low’s frustration with a pugnacious first-half display which saw the visitors head for the dressing room still on level terms and with forde untested. The manager had admitted in advance that best-laid plans could be torn up within five minutes, and he was very nearly correct. Had Durm’s piledriver, which came in the sixth, rather than fifth minute, flown under the crossbar rather than crashed into it, ireland might have faced a very different prospect. That it did not helped to preserve belief and while Germany, prompted by the gifted Kroos, who repeatedly picked out Muller, Karim bellarabi and Gotze with a series of instinctive passes, enjoyed long periods of possession, they rarely threatened to make it count. u NortherN Ireland made it three wins out of three in qualifying with a 2-0 win in Greece. Jamie Ward put the visitors ahead early on, and Kyle Lafferty fired home after the break to seal a priceless victory in Athens.

Lukas Podolski replaced Matthias Ginter at the break and very nearly handed the visitors a 49th-minute advantage when Keane picked off his pass and fed McGeady, whose initial shot was blocked before Neuer prevented Keane from connecting with McClean’s follow-up. Podolski was convinced he should have been awarded a penalty for Wilson’s challenge two minutes later, but Slovenian referee Damir Skomina was not. However, the stadium erupted two minutes later when Kroos made space for himself on the edge of the box and unleashed a right-foot drive which screamed past the diving forde and went in off the foot of the post. Hoolahan might have snatched a point but for Durm, but there was nobody on hand to deny O’Shea, whose contribution sparked mass celebrations on the pitch, the sidelines and in the stands.

Target: Bale

Cypriot rough stuff ‘normal’ for Gareth WALES star Gareth Bale said the brutal treatment he suffered at the hands of the Cyprus defenders during Monday’s 2-1 win was just ‘normal’. The Real Madrid star was the most fouled player on the pitch but managed to lead Wales to a crucial Euro 2016 qualifying win. Goals from David Cotterill and Hal Robson-Kanu saw Wales triumph, despite playing most of the second half with ten men after Andy King’s red card. Of the rough stuff, Bale said: ‘It’s normal getting taken out and you have to dust yourself off and go again. You have to get your head down and get on with it.’

Chaos: Serbia’s Mitrovic grabs the flag before violence erupts

Drone sparks ugly scenes in Belgrade THE Euro 2016 qualifier between Serbia and Albania was abandoned following violent scenes in Belgrade last night. With Albanian fans banned from the stadium, they instead managed to fly a drone over the pitch during the first half carrying an Albanian flag. The flag was caught by Serbia’s Stefan Mitrovic, sparking a mass brawl. Riot police moved in with the game suspended. It resumed briefly but was abandoned at 0-0. The countries have long been arch-enemies in dispute over Kosovo.

The Equalizer: John O’Shea celebrates after his last-minute goal picture: action pictures

by SAM cOSTELLO

You beauty: John O’Shea nips in ahead of Mats Hummels to score for Ireland

John o’Shea celebrated his 100th appearance for the Republic of Ireland with a dramatic equaliser to further dent Germany’s euro 2016 qualification campaign. The 33-year-old got ahead of Mats hummels with seconds of the fourth minute of stoppage time remaining at the Veltins arena in Gelsenkirchen to secure a 1-1 Group D draw with just his third goal for Ireland. Within seconds, the final whistle sounded and was greeted by boos and whistles from the locals among a crowd of 51,204, who had seen their side dominate for long periods, but fail to kill off game opponents. Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos looked to have fired the home side to victory when he smashed home a 71st-minute shot off the foot of the post. But the visitors refused to succumb, even after substitute Wes hoolahan had himself been denied an 86th-minute equaliser by full-back erik Durm. however, the script could hardly have been any more fitting as Sunderland defender o’Shea turned up in the right place at the right time to maintain Ireland’s unbeaten start to their pool campaign. That they were still in the game at that point was due in large part to the efforts of goalkeeper David Forde, who produced a string of second-half saves, and some typically stubborn defending from o’Shea and his colleagues.
