Man ‘addicted to’ his Google Glass
A US man has been admitted into the US Navy’s substance abuse programme after showing signs of addiction to Google Glass. Doctors at the Substance Abuse and Recovery Programme (Sarp) said the man – who was initially admitted for alcoholism treatment – wore Google’s headset for up to 18hours a day, and reported feeling irritable and aggressive when stripped of it. This was diagnosed as internet addiction disorder (IAD). The treatment the 31-year-old received has been published in the journal Addictive Behaviours, where doctors noted that ‘the patient has a history of a mood disorder most consistent with a substanceinduced hypomania overlaying a depressive disorder, anxiety disorder with characteristics of social phobia and obsessive compulsive disorder,

and severe alcohol and tobacco use disorders.’ As part of admittance to the programme, all electronic devices are taken away from patients, and the removal of Google Glass reportedly triggered a response. Doctors observed a ‘notable, nearly involuntary movement of the right hand up to (the patient’s) temple area and tapping it with his forefinger’, which is the action used to activate and navigate around the device. It can also be controlled by voice command. Google Glass has been available to buy on the search engine giant’s Explorer Program for a year. It uses a small screen in the peripheral vision to act as a head-up display, showing messages, map directions and other features.

Rail tunnel on track Passenger trains could be running underneath Dublin as early as 2016 under ambitious plans to reopen the Phoenix Park tunnel to commuters. Outlining his department’s plans for 2015, Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe said that funding would be given to help ‘facilitate the opening of the Phoenix Park Tunnel’. It is hoped that the decision to re-open the line, expected to cost €12-15million, would go a long way to addressing the congestion concerns that currently exist on Dublin’s crowded rail lines.

Tax cuts not an election stunt, insists Noonan by ED cARTy Finance Minister Michael noonan has dismissed claims tax cuts and spending increases in Tuesday’s budget are an election stunt. With households around the country calculating the limited changes to their budgets, critics of the coalition Government’s billioneuro package claimed it was a political plan. The most significant changes include a 1 per cent cut in the top rate of income tax, changes to the bands for the Universal Social charge, a €5a-month increase in child benefit and a subsidy on water bills for social welfare recipients. critics claim any savings workers secure from the budget will be sunk into paying for the new utility. ‘The election is a long way off,’ Mr noonan said. ‘Obviously we are in the business of politics. We think we have done a reasonably good job in restoring the economy ... the thing that the public will support is not tricks and stunts.’ Taoiseach enda Kenny, meanwhile, admitted too many people are still struggling in ireland

Rent controls unlikely, says minister
THe GOvernMenT has said that the introduction of caps to help tackle ireland’s spiralling rents was unlikely. Speaking on newstalk, Minister for Local Government alan Kelly said that while ‘the Government was not ruling out rent control’ if he was being ‘fair and honest’ it was not something that was being looked into seriously. ‘i only want to deliver things that will be possible. There are
constitutional issues that would hamper any effort to introduce rent caps,’ he said. ‘Successive governments have looked into rent control over the years and nothing has come of it. as i see it, the biggest thing we can do to tackle this is to increase the supply side.’ Mr Kelly made his comments as he spoke about the Government’s plans to invest more than €2.2billion into building social housing.

as he declared the country was emerging from a torrid seven years of recession. ‘in framing this budget, our goal is to copperfasten that recovery and to make sure that people see that recovery, not in the headlines but in the lives they live from day to day.’ ‘Progress is very hard won and can be easily lost,’ he warned. But he said he was optimistic about the future and wanted to reassure people around the country who ‘are fragile and live on the edge’ that they too will see the recovery. Defending the Budget, Mr Kenny said it allows ireland to now look beyond existential survival and towards rebuilding the country. He said the tax reforms will create 15,000 jobs. The Taoiseach also noted international reaction to the phasing out of the so-called Double irish tax arrangement which allowed multinationals to save billions in tax by locating here. echoing remarks from Mr noonan, he stood by the 12.5 per cent corporate tax rate and said the rate would make ireland even more attractive as a base as global pressure builds to shut down tax avoidance strategies. Mr Kenny said a reduction in the deficit – to 2.7 per cent of gross domestic product by next year – would act as a buffer to allow for any unexpected developments.

Trucker sought over road death
RTÉ delays plans to drop longwave
A truck driver is being sought over the death of an 87-year-old man who was knocked out of his wheelchair in a road accident. Gardaí said the driver failed to wait for investigating officers at the scene at Hanlon’s corner on the North circular road in Dublin. the accident occurred at 4.13pm on tuesday, September 30, and the elderly man died several days later. He was in a motorised wheelchair when the incident happened. Gardai said a white truck, believed to be a Mercedes, was involved in the accident and have appealed for the driver to come forward.
STATE broadcaster RTÉ has deferred plans to pull the plug on a longwave service which airs its flagship radio station to emigrants. The LW252 signal, which carries programmes to listeners across the UK, including parts of the North, was due to stop at the end of the month. Amid deepening criticism of a lack of viable alternatives for communities outside the Republic, RTÉ said it had postponed the closure until January 19 next year. Meanwhile, RTÉ has announced plans to appoint a new London Correspondent, a position axed two years ago as part of cutbacks.

Court told of ‘false’ claim
A BRAZILIAN student accused of making a false report to gardaí claiming she had been raped in Dublin is to be tried in the district court if she pleads guilty. Otherwise, the DPP has decided, she will have to go on trial before a judge and jury in the circuit court, which has much tougher sentencing powers and could impose a possible five-year jail term.
Regina Thais De Oliveira, 20, who had been residing at Cabra Park in Dublin, but now living in Blackrock, was charged last month with making a false statement to officers at Mountjoy Garda station on August 25. The English language student has not yet indicated how she will plead. She spent five days in prison on remand before she was able to take up bail which had been set at €1,000 .

ALMOST half of us are doing something we love – but Ireland still only ranks halfway in a table of desirable places to work. Three in five people said they are glad to have a job, an Irish Life survey found – and one in four (26 per cent) admitted they’ve stolen or ‘borrowed’ an umbrella from the office. We’re not all bad though, as 70 per cent of us are happy to make a cuppa for a colleague. Some 47 per cent of us are passionate about our work, and 41 per cent of us bought our first home before 30 – but a worrying 49 per cent don’t have a pension. Commenting on the research findings, David Harney, managing director, Irish Life Corporate Business said: ‘While these research findings reveal some humorous insights into the Irish workplace they also highlight the serious fact that

showed Ireland is middling in terms of desirability as a place to work. Job site Indeed.com showed Ireland was 20th out of 55 countries in terms of attractiveness, and one in three Irish job-seekers are looking abroad for positions, placing Ireland at 13th on its Movers Index. The most popular jobs sought include pharmacy, marketing and quantity surveyor roles. Commenting on the research data, Gerard Murnaghan, managing director at Indeed Ireland, said: ‘Whilst Ireland is not near the bottom of the table, this research clearly indicates there is work to be done in ensuring Ireland continues to attract top talent from overseas. ‘Improving the quality of our education and health infrastructure and addressing Ireland’s high marginal income tax rates are all factors that will make us more attractive.’

Degrees less valued Ancient kangaroo by irish employers ‘too heavy to jump’ IrISH entrepreneurs are increasingly sceptical about the value of a university degree when taking on staff, new research finds. More than half of small and medium enterprise owners in Ireland said degrees ‘are now so commonplace that they have lost some of their meaning’.‘It may not come as a surprise to some that so many Irish employers think that a university education is becoming less valuable,’ said Harry Parkinson, Managing Director of Close Brothers Commercial Finance Ireland, who commissioned the survey. ‘Our statistics seem to suggest that many employers are beginning to give greater recognition to practical, hands on experience, arguably ahead of academic achievement.’
A GIANT extinct kangaroo that lived in Australia 100,000 years ago would have walked rather than hopped. Scientists said the 2.7m-tall creature would have been an unnerving sight moving around on two legs. The ‘short-faced’ sthenurine weighed as much as 250kg and was three times as big as the largest kangaroos today. ‘I don’t think they could have gotten that large unless they were walking,’ said lead researcher Prof Christine Janis, from Brown University in Providence, US. Unlike large modern kangaroos, sthenurines lacked specialised features for rapid hopping, said the research published in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE.

Miles Teller, 27, is the London Film Festival’s breakout star. He appears in Whiplash as an ambitious jazz drummer who locks horns with his conductor – played with fury by JK Simmons. how traumatised were you after scenes of JK yelling at you? I wasn’t! That was the beautiful thing. We can literally be telling a joke as the director calls action. In the film you drum until your hands are bleeding. Was it physical to shoot? It was very physical and filmed in just 19 days. A lot of that sweat is real. The film has Oscars buzz around it. how does that make you feel? Good. It lets you know you made something that a lot of people are responding to. We will see you in The Fantastic Four next year. how much revealing spandex will there be? At one point me, Jamie Bell and Mike Jordan are all in some form of Spandex. But I took ballet class in college where I was already in Spandex and tights. did you share ballet tales with Jamie? I have watched him since he was in Billy elliot. I gave him a couple of dance moves. Jamie is awesome!

herlock star Benedict cumberbatch says he’d be prepared to fight religious fundamentalists ‘to the death’ if they tried to persecute him over his sexuality. The straight english 38-yearold hit out at nations that criminalise homosexuality after hinting he ‘experimented’ when he was at boarding school. ‘People are being beheaded in countries right now because of their beliefs or sexual orientations,’ he said. ‘It’s terrifying. It’s medieval – a beheading! I’d take up arms against someone who was telling me I had to believe in what they believed. I would fight them to the death. And, I believe, the older you get, you have to have an idea of what’s right
or wrong. You can’t have unilateral tolerance. You have to have a point where you go, “Well, religious fundamentalism is wrong”.’ The actor described his ‘dabbling’ when he was at school in West Sussex, england. he told out magazine: ‘It was just boys and their penises, the same way with girls and vaginas and boobs. It wasn’t out of desire.’ cumberbatch also said being openly gay in hollywood is still a ‘huge obstacle’. ‘We all know actors who are gay who don’t want to talk about it or bring it up. I don’t really know what they do to deal with it.’ he aired his views after playing Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. The World War II codebreaker was imprisoned for being gay in 1952.

Rapid-fire Sugar drops 2 hopefuls
L
ord Sugar fired a candidate in The apprentice before they even made it to the boardroom showdown in a first for the show last night – and then booted out a second hopeful. Marketing manager and aspiring luxury fashion retailer robert goodwin (pictured, right) was told ‘you’re fired’ before his project manager Scott McCulloch even got the chance to bring him back into the boardroom to fight for his place in the show. and after that sacking, McCulloch too was brought back to justify his own position, with Lord Sugar sending him packing. He led the men’s team in a task to create an item of wearable technology but they lost when they failed to pick up any orders, against the women’s team – led by marketing officer and fashion retailer Nurun ahmed – who had 250 orders for their solarpanelled jacket. goodwin had refused to take on being project manager for the task, even en though he had been asked to step up at the beginning of the episode by Lord Sugar. and the no-nonsense show w boss was determined good-win should take the rap early on, before even dragging a trio from the losing team into the boardroom to face his wrath as usual. Lord Sugar said: ‘I get the funny feeling we’re going to get finger pointing at one particular individual, robert, for not taking up the project manager’s position
and it would be an easy way out for everybody to be saying robert this and robert that. “‘So I’m going to make that much easier for everyone – robert, I don’t like people who bottle out. So robert – you’re you’ fired.’ goodwin admitted: ‘When Lord Sugar was saying, “I’m going to make it easy for you,” I kind of thought: “Yes! I’m going to get away with it and I’m going to be sent back to the house. house.”’ The usually brightlydressed 25-year-old went on: ‘Wearable technology doesn’ interest me, I don’t doesn’t kno much about it. If it know was luxury fashion, I would have gone 100 per cent in. I did try and hide and stay low, even with what I wore gre suit, which I wouldn’t – I wore a grey normally wear, to try to stay low.’ low. He said: ‘Being there and having Lord Sugar talk to you and telling you to shut up is an incredible experience.’ ence. Lord Sugar went on to mak make it a double elimination after the boardroom battle proper by giving the boys’ project manager Scott (pictured, left) the chop too. McCulloch said: ‘apprentice candidates are a very rare bunch so when you’ve got all of those egos flying around a room it can be difficult to manage. I was a typical apprentice viewer, I sat at home thinking I could do that, but it’s a very different thing being there.’

Brooks loses bid to get €750K court costs back
PHONE hacking defendant Charlie Brooks has failed in his bid to have his €750,000 court costs repaid. Rebekah Brooks’ husband and his co-defendant Stuart Kuttner ‘brought suspicion upon themselves’, a judge said as he refused their costs applications. Mr Brooks, 51, and former News of the World managing editor Mr Kuttner, 74, were both found not guilty of being part of the hacking conspiracy. They applied to have their legal fees – about €170,000 in Mr Kuttner’s case – repaid at a hearing earlier this month. But Mr Justice Saunders ruled yesterday they will not get the money back. The judge said they ‘misled the prosecution into thinking that the case against them was stronger than it was’. He added: ‘They have been acquitted by the jury and are innocent of the charges that they faced and I have considered their applications on that basis.’ Responding to the ruling, Mr Brooks said: ‘At least on a racecourse, when you back a winner the bookmakers pay you.’
cousin tells court she prayed pistorius wasn’t reeva’s killer THE cousin of Reeva Steenkamp wept in court yesterday as she told how the model’s death felt like ‘the end of the world’. Kim Martin, who described herself as ‘very close’ to Ms Steenkamp, said she had ‘hoped to God’ Oscar Pistorius had been cheating when she heard he had killed his girlfriend. She told the court she first heard the news on a car radio – but ‘they hadn’t confirmed the name’ and so she went to her mother’s house. ‘The doors opened and my mother was hysterical and that’s when I knew it was true,’ she added. ‘That was, for me, the end of the world.’ Her emotional testimony at Pistorius’s sentencing hearing dealt with the impact of Ms Steenkamp’s killing on her family for the first time.
by gERALD IMRAy The 29-year-old was shot multiple times by Pistorius in February last year in his home. Lawyers for the 27-year-old, who was found guilty of culpable homicide last month, have argued he should not go to jail – but prosecutors say his negligent actions have left behind a ‘broken family’. Mrs Martin told the court in Pretoria, South Africa, that Ms Steenkamp’s death had ‘ruined our whole family’. She said the model’s mother, June, turned to medication after the killing, while her father, Barry, sat in a corner of his house crying. ‘Reeva was everything to them,’ she added. The trial continues.

Fears as 2nd METRO ebola nurse takes flight
world digest
Generals gather to ease border tension
by sHAROn MARRis
KOREA: Generals from North and South Korea have met for the first time in three years to calm tension between the two nations. The gathering of military staff at the border village of Panmunjom followed an exchange of gunfire by both Koreas last week after activists in the South floated antiPyongyang balloons to the North. The navies of both countries also traded warning shots last week. The North and South have been technically at war since the end of the Korean War in 1953.
BoB Geldof said people in West Africa are dying of ebola because europe and America ‘pay no interest in the poor’. The campaigner told ITV News that victims of the virus in countries including Sierra leone, Guinea and liberia are ‘dying of poverty again. Why? Because they’ve no money. Because we really don’t pay much interest in the poor’.
A SECOND nurse to contract the ebola virus took a flight across the US the day before testing positive for the disease, it has emerged. Amber Vinson flew from Cleveland to Dallas on Monday. Officials said yesterday they were trying to contact all 132 passengers aboard the flight. She had shown no symptoms of ebola on the Frontier Airlines plane, the crew have told the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms Vinson works at the same Dallas hospital where Nina Pham became the first person in the US to be infected with the disease at the weekend. She and Ms Pham (pictured) cared for ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. He contracted the disease in Liberia and died last week. Ms Vinson, who lives alone, was admitted to an
isolation ward after reporting a fever on Tuesday, health officials said. Dr Anthony Fauci, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it was ‘not acceptable’ that nurses who had cared for Mr Duncan had been infected with ebola. But hospital chiefs insist they are doing ‘everything’ they can to ‘contain the virus’.
Jack cancels for ‘incredible’ ikey
Expensive view that’s Dubai for
JACK WHITE has cancelled the final two gigs of his Mexican tour after keyboard player Ikey Owens died of a heart attack. ‘It is with great sadness that we tell the world of the passing of the incredible musician Isaiah “Ikey” Owens,’ a statement on White’s website read. ‘He will be missed and loved forever by his family, friends, bandmates and fans.’ The 38-year-old, a founding member of The Mars Volta, was found dead in his hotel in Puebla on Tuesday.
THE OUTlOOK is close to heaven but visitors will have to pay sky-high prices to gaze from the world’s highest and newest observation deck. If you want to enjoy Dubai from the 148th floor of the Burj Khalifa tower, it’ll cost the equivalent of €84. But then you are riding 1,821ft above street level to get there. Previously tourists could only go to a viewing deck on the 124th floor. About 1.9million visitors did so last year alone.
‘super’ skyscraper stands over 2,000ft THAiLAnD: A planned 125-floor ‘super tower’ will be among the ten tallest buildings in the world when it opens in 2019. Standing at 2,018ft, it will include a hotel, offices and observation deck with panoramic views of Bangkok, developers claim. It will be the world’s ninth biggest skyscraper if completed on schedule, says the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The world’s tallest tower is currently Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which is 2,717ft high.

AN ACTIVIST was beaten up by police in the worst violence since Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrations started. Ken Tsang was handcuffed, dragged down an alley and kicked and punched by plain clothes police officers. Footage of the attack went viral yesterday afternoon as pictures of Mr Tsang’s bruised face and back were released by supporters. The film, broadcast on Hong Kong’s Now TV station, came as police used pepper spray to disperse protesters camped outside the government’s head-
quarters. Officials said the seven officers involved will be suspended while an inquiry is carried out. But pro-democracy politician Lee Cheuk-yan condemned the brutality, saying: ‘The police have gone insane today, carrying out their own punishment in private.’ A police spokesman said five officers were hurt in clashes with demonstrators. Beijing, meanwhile, issued its harshest condemnation of the protests, calling them bad for business and against Hong Kong’s best interests.

A heroes’ return for riot team THEY had failed to score a single goal when their European Championships qualifier was brought to a halt by a swooping drone aircraft. But Albania’s national football team were given a heroes’ welcome as they arrived home from the game against bitter rivals Serbia. Up to 3,000 flag-waving fans gathered at Tirana’s airport to greet the players – and Prime Minister Edi Rama praised them for ‘the great pride and joy they gave us’. Tuesday’s match in Belgrade was abandoned at 0-0 minutes before half-time when the drone flew over with a flag depicting ‘Greater Albania’ – including parts of Serbia. flee as supporters joined the melee. Captain Lorik Cana said yesterday: ‘I saw my players being attacked, even by the match stewards.’ English referee Martin Atkinson was forced to call off the match, from which away fans had been banned because of tension over the killing of ethnic Albanians by the Serbs in Kosovo. Football body Uefa has opened disciplinary cases against both countries. Serbian TV said Mr Rama’s brother Olsi was arrested at the stadium and deported for plotting the drone prank. Albania denied it and Mr Olsi insisted: ‘I’ve never used a drone – only bought my son a toy helicopter.’

rapid weight loss not at fault for dreaded ‘yo-yo’ effect The secret to SlimmerS should forget what they have been told about avoiding rapid weight loss in favour of slow but sure dieting, according to research. The latest evidence suggests the idea that shedding too many pounds too fast leads to a cycle of ‘yo-yo’ dieting is a myth. losing weight quickly is the best way to achieve slimming goals and not likely to result in greater weight regain than the slow approach, scientists said. The findings contradict current dietary recommendations that favour slow and steady weight loss. Australian researcher Katrina Purcell, from the University of melbourne, said: ‘Across the world, guidelines recommend gradual weight loss for the treatment of obesity, reflecting the
widely held belief that fast weight loss is more quickly regained. ‘However, our results show that achieving a weight-loss target of 12.5 per cent is more likely, and drop-out is lower, if losing weight is done quickly.’ The study looked at 200 obese adults who were randomly assigned to one of two slimming diets. One was a 12-week rapid weight loss (rWl) programme on a strict diet of 450 to 800 calories a day. The other was a 36-week gradual weight loss (GWl) programme which reduced energy intake by around 500 calories a day in accordance with current guidelines. Participants who lost more than 12.5 per cent of their body weight were then placed on a weight maintenance diet for three years.
Those on the rapid diet were more likely to meet their slimming target, with 81 per cent of the group shedding at least 12.5 per cent of body weight. in contrast, only half of the gradual slimmers achieved this goal. Weight regain was about the same for both sets of participants on the maintenance diet. in each case, about 71 per cent of lost weight was restored after three years. Writing in The lancet Diabetes and endocrinology journal, the authors suggested that the limited carbohydrate intake of very low calorie diets may force the body to burn fat. losing weight quickly might also motivate people to persist with dieting and achieve better results, the researchers said.

HerOic individuals who risk their lives to save strangers really do act without a second thought, research has shown. Scientists studied 51 statements made by recipients of the carnegie Hero Medal, a US award given each year to civilian life-savers. GROOMING SOS Declan Leavy tackles men’s grooming woes QUITE simply, shaving can be a real pain in the proverbial, especially if you suffer with post-shave skin irritation. Over the years, I’ve built up an arsenal of products that really do work when fighting the dreaded shaving rash. Relatively new to my weaponry is Molton Brown’s Post-Shave Recovery Balm. The key ingredients here are barley extract and sandalwood, which help to rebuild the moisture barrier that is broken down during shaving. €31, from Molton Brown counters. Post-shave oils can work really well to prevent and treat shaving rash. Whilst not strictly a post-shave oil, the multipurpose Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil is proven to heal a host of skin issues, including scars and stretch marks. Several years ago I tried it on a shaving rash and I’ve been using it ever since. From €19.95 at pharmacies and health stores. A little goes a long way so this lasts for ages! Origins Fire Fighter quite literally takes the burn out of shaving. Cucumber and eucalyptus work to cool the burning sensation
Poste Mistress, Willow Biker Boot, €200 If you’re looking for a ladylike way to wear the trend, these are buckle and zip free often felt after shaving, whilst soothing chamomile prevents skin irritation. €22.50, from department stores. When it comes to irritated skin, you can’t beat a dollop of good old-fashioned aloe vera gel. If you have any left over from summer, pop a bit on after shaving for an instant cooling effect. Optima Aloe Vera Gel, €4.45 from pharmacies and health stores, works to moisturise, soften and repair damaged skin caused by shaving. This one’s a bit left of field but a few years ago I was having particular trouble with shaving rash, and my sister gave me some Clarins Beauty Flash Balm to try. The rest is history. Powerful ingredients such as witch hazel and olive extracts help to instantly soothe, soften and prevent shaving rash appearing in the first place. It just works! €36, from Clarins counters. BBC2, 10pm Sinéad O’Connor veers between brilliant, bolshie and bonkers, so you’re never quite sure which version is going to turn up. But her latest album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss, is a winner, so hopes are high for tonight’s star turn. Soulboy Labrinth and easy listening queen Rumer also feature in the line-up.

BBC2, 9pm Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) moves up in the world as his plan to take over London leads to a meeting with aristo May Carleton – played by Charlotte Riley. EastEnders Maria Friedman joins as Kellie Bright’s mum
UTV, 9pm It takes a while for this four-part drama about the blaze that swept through London in 1666 to spark into life, but it’s worth hanging around for the fiery furnace of a finale, with Andrew Buchan’s baker Tom Farriner dangling from a blazing precipice in a plucky rescue of his kids. There’s a noble attempt to weave human drama around the conflagration, but it’s the blaze that does the business.
4. EastEnders
RTE1, 7.30pm Fans of musical theatre will be in high excitement as West End star chanteuse Maria Friedman joins the cast as Elaine, mother of troubled Queen Vic landlady Linda. So let’s forget the storylines and just have one belter of a karaoke.

BBC4, 10pm The discovery of a hoard of Viking treasure by a Scottish detectorist has given Mackenzie Crook’s delightfully oddball comedy a

MEMOIR CHOICE Hanging With The Elephant by
Michael harding Following the success of his memoir Staring At lakes, which won the cumbersomely-titled Bord gáis Energy Book of The Year Award 2013 and became an unlikely bestseller, irish Times columnist Michael Harding returns with another confessional dispatch in the form of Hanging with The Elephant, a ‘story of love, loss and meditation’. in his first volume Harding, a former priest and sometime playwright, wrote poignantly and candidly about his battle with depression; in this equally accomplished follow-up he concentrates on a six-week period during which his artist wife has decamped to her native Poland, leaving Harding alone in their leitrim home to brood over the death of his nonagenarian mother, ponder mortality and face – ineptly as it turns out – such quotidian complications as a leaking roof and an ever-growing list of domestic chores. in lesser hands, it could all be rather
indulgent but Harding is a selfdeprecating and winsome writer whose bittersweet musings on middle-age, loneliness and the search for spiritual enlightenment in post-Catholic ireland are leavened by an incredibly dry and unforced wit. However, it’s the sections in which Harding focuses on his relationship with his mother, prompted by the practicalities of emptying and selling her house in Cavan following her death, that Hanging with The Elephant reaches lump-inthroat-inducing thr levels of poignancy. whether rreading the sad, pithy entries in her diar diary – ‘Terrible day. Terrible ‘T lonely. nobody lonel called’ – or ca happening upon her much-loved purse muchthat’s ‘soft as a tha sleeping thrush thrush’, Harding captures not Har only his mother’s onl sorrowful decline but sor something of the vibrant, complicated and sometimes forbidding character who loomed large in his youth. Donaldson, who claimed the winning point at Gleneagles, lost 2&1 to 2006 champion paul Casey. Graeme mcDowell outlined a renewed commitment to the game and some ambitious career targets after making an ideal start to the defence of his world match Play title. mcDowell was never in trouble against the inform alexander levy, who won the rain-shortened Portugal masters last Sunday. Four birdies in the first six holes saw mcDowell establish an early lead and although levy won the 13th, the Northern Irishman made no mistake as he completed a 3&2 victory on 16. mcDowell successfully defended the French open this season and won all three of his ryder Cup matches at Gleneagles, but admitted he had

MARuSSIA have angrily dismissed claims the team urged Jules Bianchi to go faster before the crash which has left the driver fighting for his life. Some reports also suggested that the 25-year-old Frenchman did not slow down under doublewaved yellow flags shown after Adrian Sutil span off in the rain at the Japanese Grand prix earlier this month. Bianchi’s father philippe revealed on Tuesday his son’s situation was ‘desperate’ and called it a ‘miracle’ he was still alive. A statement issued by
Marussia said: ‘At a time when its driver is critically ill in hospital, and the team has made clear its highest priority is consideration for Jules and his family, it is distressed to have to respond to deeply upsetting rumours and inaccuracies in respect of the circumstances of Jules’ accident. Given that these allegations are entirely false, the team has no alternative but to address these. ‘Jules did slow down under the double-waved yellow flags. That is an irrefutable fact, as proven by the telemetry data, which the
team has provided to the FIA. An audio copy of the full radio transmission between Jules and the team, and a written transcript, were provided to the FIA. ‘At no point leading up to Jules’ accident did the team urge Jules to drive faster or make any comments suggesting he should do so.’ It was under the double-waved yellows that Bianchi careered off the Suzuka track and into a recovery vehicle that at the time was removing the Sauber of Sutil who had crashed on the previous lap.

NORTHERN Ireland boss Michael O’Neill believes the expansion of the European Championship has played a huge role in the rejuvenation of his team and the other home nations. The decision to increase the number of teams at the 2016 finals from 16 to 24 has not gone down well in some circles, but nobody can deny the start of qualifying has been hugely entertaining, with the prospects of smaller nations greatly improved. A big nation should always qualify now for the Euros, which I think is what Uefa would like. ‘But it is also good the smaller na-

Strange stories from the world of sport
Pogba given short shrift FOOTBALLERS take note – when a star-struck kid asks for your shirt post-match it’s poor form to try and fob him off with your skanky 90-minute old shorts as an alternative, as France’s Paul Pogba found out. The Juventus star (left) was confronted by a pleading boy
after Les Bleus’ 3-0 win over Armenia but couldn’t oblige as he had already promised his jersey to someone else. As a compromise, he whipped off his crackers but the clearly unimpressed lad turned away with a thanksbut-no-thanks Gallic shrug.

Nobody was more satisfied with Tuesday’s win than Northern Ireland’s goalkeeper Roy Carroll (pictured), who enjoyed a memorable return to his former home stadium having spent three seasons with Olympiakos before joining Notts County. ‘It was a dream night,’ he said. ‘Hopefully we can push on from here but it’s still too early to talk about [qualifying] at the moment.’
FRANcE U21s defender Layvin Kurzawa taunted Sweden with an arrogant salute (left) after his goal looked set to end their European qualification tilt. But he was made to pay when John Guidetti’s late strike sealed a 4-3 aggregate victory for the Swedes. Guidetti then gave Kurzawa a taste of his own medicine (below).

Whelan feelin’ happy after fairytale qualifier by sAM cOsTELLO Glenn Whelan thinks he may have spotted a star of the future during the Republic of Ireland’s 1-1 euro 2016 draw in Germany. Ireland had to withstand much pressure in Gelsenkirchen as the Germans, who numbered five of the men who started the World Cup final in Brazil three months ago, attempted to bounce back from their surprise 2-0 defeat in Poland. One of them, midfielder Toni Kroos, proved a major threat throughout, repeatedly stretching the visitors with his precise passing, and it was the 24-year-old Real Madrid star who eventually broke the deadlock 19minutes from time. Whelan said with a smile: ‘I think the boy Kroos has a little chance in football. ‘They are obviously top players, and not just the midfielders. But the boys behind us tonight, the two centre-halves and especially [midfielder David] Meyler out there as well playing right-back, jack of all trades, he did brilliantly. ‘We are just happy. ‘It’s the Irish spirit, the Irish passion. You keep going’ be a tough game and we knew we weren’t going to have a lot of the ball, but we showed great character to get a result.’ That result came in fairytale style as, moments after substitute Wes hoolahan had been denied by a last-ditch block, central defender John O’Shea turned up deep in injury time to stab home an equaliser with the last kick of his 100th appearance for Ireland. Whelan was on the sidelines having limped off injured, but the pain evaporated as t h e ball hit the back of the net. he said: ‘at 1-0, you are still in with any chance. It’s the Irish spirit, the Irish passion. You keep going until the death. ‘Maybe if it was two or three, heads would have slumped, but being 1-0 down, we knew we still had a chance and maybe could have nicked a goal before that with Wes’ chance. ‘But it doesn’t matter who gets on it at the end. But it’s great for John, 100 caps and to get a result the way we did, it was a perfect night.

Toon’s Krul boost NEWCASTLE expect Tim Krul to recover from an elbow injury in time to face Leicester on Saturday. The 26-year-old returned to Tyneside before the Oranje’s shock 2-0 loss in Iceland with ligament damage and there had been fears the injury would add to boss Alan Pardew’s troubles as he seeks a first league win of the season. However, a Magpies statement read: ‘Tim Krul has been further assessed by the club’s medical staff and the club can confirm he has nothing more than a very minor elbow injury. We will continue to monitor the situation but are confident he will be available for the game against Leicester.’

‘They are tough places to go, and especially against the world champions in their own back yard with their crowd. But it was the performance that we needed for ourselves in the dressing room to kick on and have the belief that we can do something in this campaign.’ Stoke midfielder Whelan has remained a fixture in the team under new manager Martin

These results for us haven’t come around, especially in my time in a green jersey, so I’m definitely going to cherish tonight and hopefully kick on from here.’
Michel: No excuse for Belgrade’s ugly brawl Disgraceful scenes which saw serbia and albania’s euro 2016 qualifier abandoned after violence erupted on and off the field have been condemned by uefa president Michel Platini. a drone dangling an albanian banner was flown into the stadium during the first half on Tuesday. serbia defender stefan Mitrovic grabbed the flag as albanian players tried to protect it, and the game was called off when the incident quickly escalated out of control. The case was assessed by uefa’s disciplinary unit, with numerous charges being made. Platini condemned the incidents in Belgrade’s Partizan stadium. He said:

SHEffIELD UNITED boss Nigel Clough insists a decision on whether to re-sign jailed striker Ched Evans is ‘above football’ and will be made by the board. The former Wales international is due to be released on friday, two and a half years into a five-year sentence for rape, and has been linked with a return to the Blades – the club he was at when convicted in 2012. ‘We have had one or two discussions, we are awaiting a decision and the owners will make that in good time,’ Clough said. ‘It is that sort of decision – it’s above football level.’

DROnE wARs SeRBIa and albania have been hit with Uefa charges following the disgraceful scenes which forced their euro 2016 qualifier in Belgrade to be abandoned. Violence erupted on and off the pitch when an unmanned drone trailed a pro-albania flag over the Partizan Stadium during the first half of the game. Leading football figures were united in condemning the ugly scenes and last night Uefa opened disciplinary proceedings against the football associations of both countries.

O’shea ready to build on success
Last-gasp hero John O’shea admits the Republic of Ireland might have caught germany at the right time to take a significant step towards Euro 2016 qualification. O’shea’s injury-time equaliser in gelsenkirchen on tuesday evening clinched a 1-1 draw against the reigning world champions and group D favourites three days after they suffered a shock 2-0 defeat in poland. However, the 33-year-old sunderland defender knows Ireland’s timing was good with Joachim Low having had to do without sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Bastian schweinsteiger through injury and andre schurrle and Christoph Kramer because of illness.
‘For the team, there’s big momentum now’ He said: ‘Because of the poland win, we felt we really needed to get something [with] germany missing the quality they were missing. ‘they still had a lot of quality on the pitch – it shows the strength they have. they have just won the World Cup, so they have quality players. ‘We got something from it and

hopefully germany keep getting stronger and beat the other teams.’ Ireland currently top the group jointly with poland, who were held to a 2-2 draw at home by scotland. the Republic of Ireland will travel to glasgow next month in confident mood after their 2-1 victory in georgia, the 7-0 demolition of gibraltar and then the point in germany. O’shea said: ‘It keeps the momentum going, that’s the big thing. a late winner against georgia from aiden [Mcgeady], and obviously all the teams who are going to qualify from the group are going to beat gibraltar, so we had to get that done. ‘thankfully we did, no injuries picked up and we come away to germany and pick up a point, so there’s big momentum.’ If the result at the Veltins stadium was unexpected, particularly after toni Kroos had given the home side a 71st-minute lead, it could hardly have been secured in more fitting circumstances with O’shea marking his 100th appearance for the Republic with just his third international goal.

Hero: John O’Shea celebrates after his equalizer against Germany
Scotland will be ‘massive’, says Ward STePhen WaRd has warned Scotland that the Republic of Ireland will not surrender their unbeaten euro 2016 start without a fight as the pair prepare to go head to head next month. Ward and his team-mates took their Group d tally to seven points from a possible nine with a 1-1 draw with world champions Germany in Gelsenkirchen on Tuesday to give them a platform from which to try and qualify. Ireland will head for Glasgow on november 14 sharing first place with Poland and three points better off than both the Scots – who drew 2-2 away to the Poles – and the Germans. They are determined to emerge with the gap over Gordon Strachan’s men intact, if not wider. Ward said: ‘We are unbeaten. We go to Scotland next month, which is going to be a massive game now with their result tonight. ‘I’m sure they won’t have believed that we have got a point there, so that will be a massive game. But unbeaten in three is a great start to the group for us. ‘I’m hoping people don’t say we were lucky because you have to make your own luck and defend well and work hard as a team.’
