we’re tops for phone moans

FANS of our Mailbox page will not be surprised to learn that Irish people are the least willing to put up with rude mobile phone users while they are on holiday. Irish travellers were least tolerant in a poll of 25 nationalities, citing courteousness and noise consciousness as important, as well as privacy. Some 65 per cent of Irish respondents found making calls on speakerphone offensive, while 58 per cent were not impressed with people playing music, games or videos without headphones. Taking photos or videos of strangers was rated as offensive by 53 per cent of Irish people polled, followed by making calls in a restaurant, using a device during a seated performance or activity, making video calls, Face Time, Skype calls and loud mobile device alerts. The study from Expedia also found that 90 per cent of Irish people bring at least one device with them while on holiday. Some 77 per cent said their smartphones are ‘very important/critical’ to their daily lives when travelling. Some 68 per cent say the same about

their tablet device, while 66 per cent put their laptop in that category. Email or messaging, camera or video recording and maps or navigation are the most frequent functions used while on holiday. Ten per cent of Irish travellers said they keep a phone charger with them at all times. Meanwhile, despite Irish people spending 25 per cent more on average on roaming charges than they consider to be reasonable, only 31 per cent purchase an international data/ roaming plan when travelling. Forty-eight per cent of Irish travellers, meanwhile, are unaware of new legislation capping the maximum you can be charged for data roaming in the European Union. The global 2014 Expedia and Egencia Mobile Index also found that Brazilians and Thai nationals cared least about mobile etiquette. Some 43 per cent of Thais admitted to taking photos or video of strangers and a fifth of Brazilians admitted to making calls on speakerphone when travelling.

Place to be: The Aran Islands, Clare, Galway and Kerry were among the attractions cited in the article

Travel guide goes wild for Ireland by ED cARTy IRELAND has been named one of the top countries to visit next year thanks in part to the success of the Wild Atlantic Way. Tourist and traveller guide Lonely Planet put the island at number five on its 2015 must see destinations with a overview of festivals and culture designed to ‘separate blarney from the bumkum’. The top billing gives a glowing review of Ireland as the ‘real deal’. The 1,500km Wild Atlantic Way is described as a scenic drive which is being sold as a rival to California’s Pacific Coast Highway and Australia’s Great Ocean Road. ‘It snakes its way round every nook and crook of the western seaboard from Donegal to Cork – start your journey with a feast of crab claws in Inishowen and reward your endeavours with some smoked salmon in Kinsale,’ it says. ‘Along the way, explore Connemara, the Aran Islands, the music bars of Co Clare and the scenic splendours of Co Kerry. Go west.’ Travel writer Fionn Davenport penned the review for Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015. In it he says the economy remains the big talking point, and finding who should be blamed for the meltdown. ‘As the country reels from five years of body blows, it’s trying to figure out why, how and, especially, who,’ he says.

Wills and Kate confirm their Royal Sprog No.2 THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have confirmed that their baby is due in April of next year. Kate (pictured), who is expecting her second child, has been suffering from another bout of the severe morning sickness she experienced during the early stages of her first pregnancy. A series of engagements was cancelled after the pregnancy was announced on September 8 – with many suggesting the timing ahead of the Scottish independence referendum was a bit too convenient – but her condition is improving and she will join William in welcoming Singapore’s President on a state visit to the UK. ‘Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in April 2015,’ Kensington Palace said. ‘Her

Lonely Planet said the selected countries and cities were picked because there is something special next year to draw travellers or a recent development or buzz about the place, or because Lonely Planet regards it as upand-coming and urges travellers to get there before the crowds. It says: ‘Ireland is stunningly scenic, its traditions – music, dance, whiskey and beer – firmly intact and the cosmopolitan, contemporary Irish are just as friendly and welcoming as their forebears were known to be.’ Among the highlights singled out are the St

Patrick’s Day Festival, any time in the summer in Galway, All-Ireland finals and the Ennis Trad Festival. But it also reserves a special mention for ‘Ireland’s quirkiest festival’ – the Puck Fair in Killorglin, Co Kerry, where it says ‘a goat is crowned king and everybody drinks for three days’. Other recommendations include surfing on Rossnowlagh beach in Donegal, a cross country walk ‘on a soft Sunday’ or a pint and a chat in a local pub. Lonely Planet again points to hospitality

being the key to Ireland’s continued success on the tourism front. ‘The Irish themselves are inevitably at the heart of the best the country has to offer,’ it says. Lonely Planet spokeswoman Noirín Hegarty added: ‘With the Wild Atlantic Way now fully open and a new sense of optimism surging through the country, 2015 really is the time to go to Ireland. The country’s stunning landscape and incredible hospitality are on par with the globe’s top tourist destinations.’

Key scientific Rapist footballer back on streets as victim flees centres given €250m boost CLOSE to €250million is to be invested in five new scientific research centres, the Government has announced. The funding aims to boost cutting-edge groundwork in critical areas of the economy, such as smart agriculture, geoscience and medical innovation. Some €155million of the investment will be provided by Science Foundation Ireland. Meanwhile, AIB and Frontline Ventures have launched the AIB Discovery Programme. It aims to help the next generation of technology entrepreneurs. Up to €100,000 will be given to 20 individual companies in the technology start-up sector.

DEFIANT rapist footballer Ched Evans and his girlfriend made their first public display of unity yesterday – as it emerged that his supporters had exposed the new identity of his victim. The former Sheffield United striker strolled hand-in-hand with Natasha Massey, 26, who stood by him after he admitted cheating on her. Meanwhile, police said the 22year-old victim may be forced to

change her name after internet trolls blew her cover. The woman was forced to flee the UK and adopt another identity when she became the target of a Twitter hate campaign, following Evans’ conviction for raping her in 2011. Now that details of her new life have been published online, she may have to start over for a second time. Det Supt Jo Williams, of North Wales Police, said: ‘The victim in

this case has been in regular contact with officers responsible for her care and is receiving appropriate support at this difficult time.’ Evans, who has refused to accept his guilt, was pictured with Ms Massey in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, following his release from prison last week. The 25-year-old said the victim had been drinking and consented to have sex with him.

HealtH chiefs have stressed there is a low risk of ebola reaching Ireland as the latest suspected case turned out to be free from the killer disease. tests carried out on a patient taken from west Dublin to the isolation unit in the city’s Mater Hospital have ruled out the virus as a cause of the symptoms. the Health Service executive (HSe) said the patient was considered at low risk of having been infected but that they were taking any potential case seriously. the patient is getting treatment for another illness at the Mater Hospital, confirmed a spokesman. ‘there are no known cases of ebola in Ireland presently,’ he added. ‘the Ready: Varadkar overall risk of a case of ebola being brought into in Ireland is low.’ last week, Health Minister leo Varadkar said Ireland is ramping up its preparations against ebola. While there was no reason to believe emergency departments would be swamped with cases or could not handle a spread of the outbreak, the virus was escalating and there was a low risk of infections here, he said. Mr Varadkar said the most likely scenario of ebola reaching Ireland would be from people returning from the worst affected countries in west africa; Sierra leone, Guinea or liberia. there are currently 54 known Irish citizens in those three countries. all are being monitored by the Department of Foreign affairs. an emergency taskforce of Government ministers met two weeks ago about fears over the spread of virus and will be meeting again. there have been more than a dozen suspected ebola cases in Ireland but all turned out to be clear from the disease.

More than 280,000 drop health insurance over cost THE RISINg cost of private health insurance has led to more than 280,000 policyholders dropping their cover over the last six years, experts have said. A survey by One Big Switch – which describes itself as a ‘consumer price network’ – found of those who have stopped paying into health insurance, 45 per cent were aged 18 to 32. Since a peak in 2008, the health insurance market has seen a fall in business. This has coincided with a 58 per cent rise in premiums.

The estimates by the consumer network follow on from a recent report by Ireland’s Health Insurance Authority, which detailed that the primary factor for discontinuance was cost. According to the HIA, close to two-thirds of people cancelled their policy because it was ‘too expensive’. Quarterly figures produced by the HIA for June show a 41,000 decrease in health insurance plans for this year – an average drop of nearly 7,000 per month.

Despite many thinking that private health insurance ‘did not represent value for money’, last year the majority of those involved in the HIA research agreed with the statement: ‘Private health insurance is a necessity, not a luxury.’ Sarah Ryan, director of campaigns at One Big Switch, said that because more young people are forgoing costly premiums, health insurance in Ireland is becoming disproportionately aged – perpetuating a rise in prices.

Irish Water deadline ‘to be put back’

Truckers stage rush-hour rally over tax gripe MeMbers of the Irish road Haulage Association (IrHA) staged a picket early yesterday morning in protest over higher road tax for trucks in Ireland compared with their UK counterparts. The IrHA has warned that the difference will cost jobs in Ireland. It says that it costs €4,000 a year to tax an Irish-registered articulated truck – five times the rate in the UK and Northern Ireland. A tax of £10 (€12.60) is also levied upon entering the UK. speaking to Newstalk, IrHA president eoin Gavin said: ‘It’s unsustainable. The differential between operating a truck in the south of Ireland and the north of Ireland is €5,000.’ It is calling on Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe and environment Minister Alan Kelly to ‘immediately intervene in order to protect jobs in the sector’. Motorists were advised to avoid the Dublin port and port tunnel areas yesterday morning as the protest caused much congestion during the morning rush hour. The AA reported that the Port Tunnel was closed southbound, with approaching routes seeing long delays, even after the trucks had finally moved off around 9am.

IRISH WATER is expected to request an extension to the deadline for customers to sign up for allowances. Last week, head of communications Elizabeth Arnett said it would consider extending the period for processing customer applications. Newstalk reported the request has been received by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), with a final decision to be made this week. As it stands the deadline is October 31. Earlier, Anti-Austerity Alliance TD Paul Murphy had commented on the prospect of an extension: ‘The truth is it already has been (extended). Contained in the small print of the decisions for the Commission for Energy Regulation is a 60-day look-back period, which effectively extends the deadline to December 30. ‘One can only presume that registration is extremely slow and they were planning to “generously” unveil

by LukE HOLOHAn this extension to the deadline to try to convince more people to sign up.’ A CER spokesperson was unavailable for comment when contacted. Meanwhile, the chief executive of small and medium business lobby group Isme, Mark Fielding, yesterday issued an angry statement on bonuses

‘It’s quite simply a tax collecting operation’ that can be paid to Irish Water staff. ‘What a wonderful business to be in, where your customers have no alternative but to use your product or else die. Sounds like the dream business. But that’s exactly the business model for the monopoly utility Irish Water, except it’s not a business, it’s a tax collecting operation.’

cahill in vow to support victims of iRA sex abuse

A BelfAst woman who claims her allegations of rape were covered up by sinn féin and the IRA has vowed to support abuse victims she says are still too scared to come forward and tell their stories. Mairia Cahill warned that abusers were still walking the streets because victims were fearful of contacting the authorities. ‘there are perpetrators at the minute that have never been before a court of law because victims have been frightened into silence and haven’t been able to report it,’ she said on a visit yesterday to stormont to discuss her case with the North’s first Minister, the DUP’s Peter Robinson. Ms Cahill, 33, alleges she was raped by a suspected IRA member when she was a teenager in 1997. In a BBC spotlight documentary last week, she further claimed the IRA conducted its own inquiry into her account, subjecting her to interrogation and forcing her to confront her alleged attacker. the man she accused of rape was later acquitted.

On sunday, sinn féin President Gerry Adams, who has denied ahe was involved in a cover-up of her case, admitted the IRA on occasion had shot alleged sex abusers, insisting that its members were ‘singularly illequipped to deal with these matters’. Yesterday, taoiseach enda Kenny said he expected to see other victims of abuse at the hands of republicans coming forward. ‘I think there has been despicable, utterly despicable, conduct by sinn féin to discredit Mairia Cahill,’ Mr Kenny said. In response, Mr Adams said last night: ‘In comments today, the taoiseach suggested that my recent blog was “part of an attempt to discredit” Mairia Cahill. ‘He is entirely wrong and his remarks are mischievous and clearly politically motivated. ‘the taoiseach should not try to score cheap political points about these sensitive and serious issues.’

LYNDA BELLINGHAM’S husband has led tributes to the actress and presenter after she died in his arms at the age of 66. Michael Pattemore said he was heartbroken she did not see another Christmas as she had hoped but said her death had ended the great pain she was suffering. His wife, who was known for her role as the mother in Oxo’s long-running ads, died on Sunday night, nearly 16 months after being diagnosed with colon cancer. The Loose Women co-host decided to stop chemotherapy in August after the disease spread and doctors gave her months to live. Mr Pattemore, 59, said: ‘I just want her to be remembered as an actress more than anything – not as a celebrity.’

Magazine pays out to Cheryl’s husband THE husband of X Factor judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has accepted substantial undisclosed privacy damages over a ‘very upsetting’ UK magazine article about his family life. Businessman Jean Bernard Fernandez-Versini, who married the 31-year-old singer – better known as Cheryl Cole – in July, brought proceedings for invasion of privacy and breach of the Data Protection Act 1998 at London’s High Court against National Magazine Company Ltd, publisher of Reveal magazine.

Table for one: Numbers of African white-backed vultures have declined Bad taste: Jean Bernard FernandezVersini – husband of Cheryl (pictured) – was upset by the ‘intrusive’ article

He had no wish to be a public figure His solicitor, Callum Galbraith, told Judge Richard Parkes the ‘deeply intrusive’ article was very upsetting for Mr Fernandez-Versini as, despite his wife’s fame, he had no wish to be a public figure. Spread across three pages, it detailed his childhood, his life in France where he was brought up and made public information about his father, late mother, their personal finances, relationships and feelings about each other. The publisher accepted that it invaded his privacy, apologised and agreed to pay substantial damages and his legal costs. Neither Mr Fernandez-Versini

nor his wife were at the hearing. Mr Galbraith said the upset and distress caused to Mr FernandezVersini was particularly acute. ‘Publicity was the inevitable, but avoidable, consequence for the claimant in so far as Reveal’s article is concerned. ‘Despite describing the article as the product of an investigation, at its core was a combination of speculation, gossip and private information. ‘As Reveal now accepts, the article constituted an unjustifiable

and unnecessary intrusion into the claimant’s private and family life: the only reason for it being published at all was the fame and notoriety of the claimant’s wife which is, of course, no justification for a publication that in truth should never have been made. Reveal now accepts this.’ The magazine said it wished to express its regret for the distress and hurt caused and undertook not to republish the article nor any similar information about Mr Fernandez-Versini in the future.

TRiniTy sciEnTisTs sERvE up sOLuTiOn TO vuLTuRE cRisis THEY can strip a carcass in less than half an hour, but now it seems the African white-backed vulture may have to dine-out for free in human-staffed eateries. In an ingenious and unusual step, zoologists from Trinity College’s School of Natural Sciences are proposing ‘vulture restaurants’ so that the endangered species can survive spells of food scarcity in its native Swaziland and neighbouring habitats on the African continent. Vulture populations are currently declining at an alarming rate across Africa and Asia due to agricultural chemicals. In rural West Africa, some species have declined by more than 95 per cent. The birds feed exclusively on

dead meat, meaning they are dependent on game dying. Dr Andrew Jackson, assistant professor in zoology in Trinity, said: ‘Creating vulture restaurants might seem a radical idea, but conserving endangered animals is a very complicated task, and we might need to get creative to have the impact we want.’ Adam Kane, lead author in vulture conservation, likened it to feeding garden birds, saying: ‘It might seem funny to suggest dragging a huge carcass out into a field to feed these birds, but it’s a similar idea to the one that sees us all fill our bird feeders with peanuts during the winter.’ Vulture restaurants are already being used with great success in South Africa and parts of Asia.

Bride claimed she had cancer to con friends out of cash by DAVID WILCOCK

A MOTHER swindled nearly £10,000 (€12,620) from friends and strangers by pretending to have terminal cancer. Danielle Watson took cash, freebies and cut-price deals after lying to everyone including her family and fiancé. She got a reduced deal on her wedding dress and reception venue after saying she wanted to tie the knot before chemotherapy made her hair fall out. But rather than having ‘late-stage cervical cancer’ – as she claimed – the 24year-old had merely undergone keyhole surgery to check for ovarian polyps. She aroused suspicion by becoming defensive when people said she appeared healthy – and revealed two months after her wedding that she was pregnant. Watson, of Essex, England, had denied six counts of fraud but dramatically changed her pleas on the first day of her trial at Basildon Crown Court. The court had earlier heard that friends

Essex Police investigating officer DC Rob Lewis said Watson ‘acted in a cold and calculated manner.’ Watson was released on bail, to be sentenced on January 9.

LLY MURS has found himself at the mercy of Taylor Swift after sending her a grovelling apology over his ‘sexist’ remarks. The Troublemaker singer, 30, was in hot water after pleading with the pop babe to ‘let it go’ and ‘write something new’ instead of songs about her split with Harry Styles, 20. ‘I reached out to Taylor around two days ago. I gave her a letter and said: “I’m really sorry... It came out wrong. I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make any offence”,’ Murs back-pedalled.

Sex change gossip is so silly, says Kris

KRIS JENNER says talk her estranged husband Bruce is having a sex change is ‘silly’. ‘They’ve been saying that since the ’70s – you think he’d be cooked by now,’ Kim Kardashian’s mum, 58, joked.

‘It always came out that every article says Taylor writes songs and they always link it to Harry so I was just making a joke and defending my mate.’ Slammed for his ‘sexist angle’ by Swift, 24, Murs insists his comments were blown out of proportion. ‘I’m not and I’ve never been sexist, I don’t think that’s right,’ he told the Daily Mail Australia. ‘It wasn’t nice what I said but it was a joke. I didn’t expect it to blow up like it did.’ Swift was reportedly inspired by her break-up with Styles last year to pen new track Out Of The Woods and her hit I Knew You Were Trouble. But Taylor (pictured) claims she’s getting a hard time mostly because she’s a woman.

EVAN RACHEL WOOD says she was made to feel ‘like meat’ when she posed for Vanity Fair at the age of 15. The actress, 27 (pictured) claims she was bullied into wearing a mini dress and heels after begging to wear flat shoes and trousers on the cover of the Young Hollywood issue in 2003. ‘I was 15 and felt for the first time my identity being erased and the pressure to shut up and do what you are told. I felt like meat. Since then, I have found my voice.’ ‘Never again,’ she tweeted after a fan posted a photo of the shoot.

She told 2Day FM: ‘No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says it about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing songs about their exes, their girlfriends, their love life, and no one raises a red flag there.’

uTGeR, while I agree that a lot of Irish people are far too interested in the english Premier League, I don’t agree with your opinions on our international teams. The whole excitement of Irish international football is that we know we’re not great, and that’s what makes it all the sweeter when we win. The rugby team have certain expectations to live up to, and can disappoint as a result. Last week we drew 1-1 with Germany, who are the current world champions. Swedish troops carry out cold War-era search for suspected russian submarine

the hunt for ‘red intruder’

by DAnIel BInnS

LIKE something from the pages of a Cold War thriller, Swedish forces are scouring their waters for a suspected Russian submarine. Ships, helicopters and troops were said to be investigating ‘foreign underwater activity’ in the Baltic Sea 30 miles off Stockholm. A photo was released yesterday showing what appeared to be a craft surrounded by white ripples, which was said to have then submerged. It was one of three sightings that the military said were credible reports. Admiral Anders Grenstad said: ‘It could be a submarine, or a smaller submarine. It could be divers using some form of moped-like underwater vehicle and it could be divers that don’t have any business on our territory.’ Sweden’s biggest such mobilisation since the Iron Curtain fell began on Friday after a radio transmission in Russian on an emergency frequency. Russia has denied any of its vessels were involved. ‘There Mobilised: A Swedish search are no extraordinary, let alone gunboat in the emergency, situations involving Russian warships,’ a spokesman said.

Bad Education Jack Whitehall’s Alfie stakes his claim as world’s worst teacher

There’s more to U2 than just Bono – although you’d never think given the way people carry on about them in this country. Tonight, Jools Holland plays host to the quartet, providing a chance to silence the racket about iTunes and taxes with what really matters – the songs. Moody NYC indie stars Interpol and Sam Smith also show up for some of Holland’s nasal wit.

2. Homeland

RTÉ2, 9.30pm This fourth series of Homeland feels to be back on track with what it does best – keeping us guessing with a mix of whipsmart intrigue and characterisation. Central to this is Carrie (Claire Danes, pictured), who is one of TV drama’s most complex heroes. Tonight, she is back in Islamabad trying to get to grips with her opposite number in Pakistan’s shady Inter-Services Intelligence.

3. Human Universe

BBC2, 9pm Are Earthlings the only intelligent life in the universe? That’s the big question underpinning Brian Cox’s latest voyage into the thoughtprovoking stratosphere and he’s brave enough to float the possibility that the answer might just be ‘yes’. A billion sci-fi franchises instantly crumble into space dust.

5. Bad Education

BBC3, 10pm Is school finally out for Jack Whitehall’s Alfie, surely a leading contender for Worst Teacher Of The Year? The bell may well be ringing for the last time as our hapless hero heads off for a career in gaming. Then again, if the chatshow/panel game options don’t pan out…

7. Masters of sex More4, 10pm

It’s an extended length (leave it!) episode for the season-two finale of this rather good period sex drama.

The story centres on Masters (Michael Sheen) feeling disgruntled about a TV documentary about his pioneering research into human sexual function. We’ve not climaxed yet – season three is on its way.

8. The Leftovers

Sky Atlantic, 9pm After a dangerously slow-burning start, this has hit a kind of groove that’s odd and unsettling if not exactly original. Tonight, Nora takes off to a conference about the departed in New York and we’re

praying it doesn’t turn into a quasireligious allegory. Hmmm...

9. Uefa Champions League Live

TV3/UTV, 7.30pm Will Slovenian champs NK Maribor become the latest victims of Chelsea and the in-form Oscar? They’re no pushovers, however, having drawn their first two Group G games, so Jose ‘Special One’ Mourinho won’t be taking them lightly (kick off 7.45pm).

10. Today’s Film: Magnolia

Sky Select, 10pm Paul Thomas Anderson’s sprawling 1999 masterpiece offers Tom Cruise the chance to show the supreme actor he can be when he’s not dashing around pretending to be an action hero 20 years younger than he is. Cruise sends himself up manfully as a maniacal sex guru, just one figure in Anderson’s portrait of a day in the crazy life of the San Fernando Valley. Inspired filmmaking from Anderson featuring a spectacular ensemble cast.

Foodie fun: At Abattoir night market

The state of Baltic cuisine Take to the skies

An unmissable new feature has been added to Helsinki’s skyline. The looming Finnair Sky Wheel (finnair-skywheel.com) ferries passengers 40m above the city from the Market Square pier and offers a bird’s-eye view of all the capital’s landmarks such as Helsinki Cathedral and the imposing Parliament House. Also on view is Helsinki’s coastline, which weaves in and out of harbours with sailing boats, pleasure yachts and winterready icebreakers jostling for space. The wheel (€12pp) is open every day until after dark.

months ago and is attracting military enthusiasts and daytrippers alike, who come to enjoy the island’s beachy vibe and wonderful sunsets. Only 150m long, the island’s sole business, Lonna’s Café, is popular for hosting summer barbecues with DJs and for its famous takeaway picnics. For just €17, the café will prepare a typical seaside picnic basket. Lonna is reachable by waterbus (€6pp) from the Market Square. The boat continues on to Suomenlinna, a Unesco-protected, fully inhabited fortress island built to protect the capital’s harbour from invasion. It now has an excellent museum, craft shops and eateries, and good accommodation.

The decommissioned military island of Lonna was a strategic wartime base, used for Russian Navy storage in the 1880s, as a base to clear mines in the 1920s, and to demagnetise ships after World War II. It opened to the public three Xmas cheer: Santa Claus World, Linnanmäki park

The Abattoir, or Teurastamo in Finnish (teurastamo.com), is at the heart of the city’s epicurean revival and is an example of how it blends trends with tradition. Red-brick buildings tower over the farmers’ market, packed with foodies hawking their wares. Buy salt beef, beetroot pudding, homemade pâtés and pickles, or dive into one of the pop-up restaurants. A cookery school, barbecue and public sauna add to the community feel. The old market hall, Vanha Kauppahalli (vanhakauppahalli.fi), has also reopened after a five-month renovation. The grand building has long been a focal point for traders and foodies. There’s plenty of new stuff too – carnivores will love the new meat market, offering wild game and organic produce.

You may not be thinking of Christmas yet but the kids will be. Santa Claus has conveniently made landfall a little closer than Lapland, at the new Santa Claus World at Linnanmäki amusement park (linnanmaki.fi). Little helpers will be accompanied through the glittering wonderland by real elves, and introduced to the Northern Lights and the Christmas story before hopping on the old man’s knee at his own cottage. Parents can post Christmas cards and gifts, to arrive with Santa’s very own postmark. Bigger kids might want to skip town altogether for the heated sleighs of Ivalo. The dreamy Aurora Zone (theaurorazone.com) offers snowmobile-pulled cocoons, with

passengers experiencing the beauty and drama of the Northern Lights while snugly tucked inside heated transparent pods.

The women who hurry along the pavements wear severe black cloaks pulled forward to their eyebrows. The men dressed in peasant clothes and cheap plastic sandals are secretly rich, renowned for their furious bargaining skills. Transactions at the market are belaboured exchanges of tuts and hisses, whispered offers with lowered eyes, counter offers protested while patting empty wallets in pockets. Above my head the windows of

The balconies are concealed more vibrantly with colourful sheets – bright paisley patterns, elaborate equestrian scenes; the miniature worlds behind them betrayed by faint glimpses of an upended mop or a haphazard clothes line. To Iran I was taking all my romantic ideas. I was bringing the best, kindest version of myself. In turn I hoped that the best, most beautiful parts of Iran might reveal themselves to me also. ith Nespresso opening a new store on Duke Street in Dublin this month, coffee expert Jonathan Sims tells Daragh Reddin why the capsule is king. Nespresso machines were the first on the market to use capsules rather than ground coffee. What are the advantages over the grindand-brew method? Ross BRawn, Emerson Fittipaldi and stefano Domenicali are just three of the high-profile names on a 10strong FIa accident Panel formed in the wake of Jules Bianchi’s horrific crash in Japan a fortnight ago. one of the measures announced by FIa president Jean Todt soon after Bianchi’s (pictured) smash into a recovery vehicle at suzuka that has left him fighting for his life was the formation of a body to not only look into the incident, but also to propose new safety recommendations. cApTAin HEAsLip LEADs by ExAMpLE As iMpREssivE sHOwing puTs LEinsTER bAck On THE RigHT TRAck JAMIE HEASLIP needed to show up on Sunday and everybody who left the RDS was in little doubt that the Leinster captain had delivered for his team when they really needed him. Without Sean O’Brien and Cian Healy in the pack, with Mike Ross and Rob Kearney sidelined, Leinster needed a big performance from their second-most capped Ireland player on the pitch and they got it in spades. Heaslip captained Leinster on many occasions before he officially took over from Leo Cullen this season – and like his shortlived tenure leading the Irish team he has had his highs and lows. The last low note came at the Aviva a few weeks ago when he was one of many in blue who drowned amongst the waves of Munster aggression and he will have needed this game to remind himself that he can lead this team. Heaslip took on the most ball of anyone in the tournament at the weekend (23 carries) and also found himself among the Champions Cup top tacklers (14). Leadership can be boiled down to ‘Do as I do’ and certainly the skipper’s back row colleagues Dominic Ryan

and Rhys Ruddock answered that challenge. Ruddock established himself as a first-teamer for the big occasion last season and now Ryan, who has grown as a leader at the province himself, produced when it mattered. The powerful burst he made for the try-line was rewarded with his finger-tip finish and finally a career that exploded into life back in 2010 under Joe Schmidt looks like coming good at last. What makes the overall Leinster performance so impressive is how they got themselves out of a hole after shipping two soft tries in the first-half to Alapati Leiua and Christian Wade. Trailing by nine points at half-time you wondered how this new generation of Leinster players was going to respond and their reply will have pleased the likes of Brian O’Driscoll, watching on in his new role as a pundit for BT Sport. Sure, they failed to get a bonus point with 20 minutes left to play, but given the resources and the loss of players to injury, retirement and headhunting, Leinster are keeping the wins coming even if it isn’t the prettiest rugby in the world.

MANCHESTER City will have their work cut out to triumph at CSKA Moscow in the Champions League after Bayern Munich found them difficult to break down last time out, winning 1-0 in the Russian capital. City’s aim of making the knockout stages will be in tatters unless they win and they are 6/4 with Bet Victor to lead at half-time and full-time, while Sergio Aguero is 19/5 to break the deadlock with Stan James and evens with the same firm, William Hill and Betfred to score at some stage. Hartson’s a ‘disgrace’, says Stoke chief Coates Stoke chairman Peter Coates has labelled John Hartson a ‘disgrace’ and will complain to the BBC about his comments on Sunday’s Match of the Day 2 regarding Potters winger Victor Moses. Swansea boss Garry Monk was strongly critical of Moses and referee Michael oliver, accusing the former of conning the latter to win a penalty in Stoke’s 2-1 win – it is understood his comments are being studied by the Football Association. Swansea-born Hartson, giving his view as a pundit for the BBC, agreed with Monk’s assessment that Moses had cheated and said the winger should be punished for a ‘blatant dive’. ‘I think Garry Monk has a right to be angry. He [Moses) has cheated,’ said Hartson. ‘It’s one thing

the FA coming out and charging Garry Monk – what about charging Victor Moses for diving? Coates said: ‘I’ve never heard a more one-sided view from a pundit and we are right to complain about it. Hartson was a disgrace. He’s a big fan of

Axed: Clark

Sacked Clark Blue it, insists Claridge lee ClArK can have no complaints about being sacked by birmingham, according to former blues striker Steve Claridge. The Championship strugglers have won just once at home in a year and a 1-0 defeat to bolton – who were bottom – on Saturday proved the final straw. Clark had to work with a vastlyreduced budget with birmingham up for sale but Claridge said: ‘I don’t think it should be used as an excuse. It has been difficult but he probably had to do a little better. You can ask why they are not winning more games and you have to look at the manager. It’s a difficult job but it’s as difficult as you make it.’ first-team coach and chief scout Malcolm Crosby is the caretaker boss.

In a TV appearance at the weekend Di Canio (pictured) said he had no say on recruitment, a claim dismissed by roberto De fanti, the club’s former director of football. ‘Paolo had the final decision on every player,’ De fanti told bbC Sport. ‘He always blames everybody else but himself.’ Di Canio was axed five games into last season and De fanti added: ‘Cracks inside were already evident.’

One Fell swoop: Fellaini finally breaks his United duck in last night’s thrilling draw

by JOHN PAYNE MAROUANe FeLLAiNi rammed West Brom’s taunts back down their throats as he finally got his first Manchester United goal at the Hawthorns last night. Leading through Stephane Sessegnon’s superb eighth-minute strike, even the Baggies’ Twitter feed joined in the mocking as previous boss David Moyes’ most notorious signing prepared to come on at half-time. They posted: ‘Fellaini has taken his tracksuit top off, fortunately he has a Man Utd strip on underneath.’ But it took just two minutes for Louis van Gaal’s substitution to pay off as the £27.5million man crashed home a brilliant equaliser. it looked like the Baggies would have the last laugh when Saido Berahino restored their lead midway through the second half, but Daley Blind secured a deserved point for United late on.

JOSe MOURiNHO has blasted a lack of communication with national team managers in the continued absence of Diego Costa. Chelsea’s top scorer sits out tonight’s Champions League tie with Maribor, after aggravating his hamstring problem on international duty. The Blues boss believes it might have been avoided had Spain boss vicente del Bosque spoken to him but admits his relationship with most national team bosses is non-existent.

Of all the national teams i’ve only had one phone call – from Roy Hodgson. He was the only manager to make personal contact with me. We have a correct relationship.’

Ronaldo not the only Real threat, Rodgers warns stuttering Reds

Cautious: Brendan Rodgers

LiveRPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers insists his side cannot become too focused on stopping Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League this week as Real Madrid have enough quality to hurt them elsewhere. Real’s other flying forward Gareth Bale is unlikely to feature because of an injury which kept him out of the weekend’s 5-0 win over Levante but Ronaldo will undoubtedly take centre stage in the Group B clash at Anfield tomorrow night. The Portugal international arrives on the back of breaking a 71-year La Liga record by scoring 15 goals in the first eight matches of the season – and while his talent cannot be under-estimated, Rodgers stressed it would be foolish to focus solely on him. ‘He’s a player off the charts. His

evolution in recent years, the way he has become a goalscorer has been amazing,’ Rodgers told Spanish newspaper AS. ‘We need to stop him but there is danger in other parts of the field. You have (Luka) Modric, (Toni) Kroos – wonderful technicians who can play short, long.

‘I have no doubts about my players’ ‘i’m also a big admirer of Sergio Ramos (another injury doubt as he has not featured since October 5) since his young days at Sevilla where he came through the system before making a move and then making over 100 caps for Spain. ‘it is a magnificent achievement and he is fast, strong and has personality. i love it.
