adams challenged on sex row ‘exile’
Sinn FÉin president Gerry Adams has been challenged by the Government to reveal if iRA rapists and paedophiles were exiled to the Republic. Taoiseach Enda Kenny demanded the republican leader answer allegations that alleged sexual abusers in the terror group were secretly expelled from northern ireland into safe houses in Dublin, Louth and Donegal and other areas. Amid deepening controversy over the case of Belfast woman Mairia Cahill (right), who claims Sinn Féin covered up her allegations of rape by a suspected iRA member, Mr Kenny said her story will have serious consequences. He challenged Mr Adams directly: ‘Are those people still here? is this true? Do you know of any activities they are involved in now? ‘These are the most serious matters for everybody. Sexual abuse was

rampant in many sectors in irish society, not alone in paramilitary organisations, but you have responsibility for this, we need to know.’ Mr Kenny issued the demand after an hour-long meeting with Ms Cahill in Government Buildings. As her case garnered increased publicity over the week, Ms Cahill claimed she was aware that the iRA moved abusers out of northern ireland into Co Louth – Mr Adams’s constituency. Ms Cahill, 33, from west Belfast, a former Sinn Féin member and a grand-niece of one of the founders of the Provisional iRA, Joe Cahill, has alleged she was raped by a suspected iRA member when she was a teenager in 1997.

Tributes pour in as hero Gavin loses cancer fight
Truckers lift rally threat
by JOANNE AHERN TRIBUTES have been paid to four-year-old Gavin Glynn, who lost his battle with cancer late on Tuesday night. In a post on the Team Gavin Glynn Facebook page, his father, John, said: ‘Rest in peace our beautiful baby. You fought the hardest fight anyone could imagine and all the way to the end. You are and will always be our Superman.’ Gavin was diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of muscle cancer, in October 2011, when he was 18 months old. After exhausting treatment options in Ireland, his family brought him to Switzerland for proton therapy treatment and then to Amsterdam for further treatment when the cancer returned. When that proved unsuccessful, supporters raised €350,000 to bring him to Texas for Hipec surgery. Mr Glynn added that his little boy ‘passed very peacefully with [siblings] Conor, Lucy, myself and [mother] Jayne holding hands on our couch at home’. He concluded: ‘Fly high buddy, we love you so much.’ Gavin won Ireland’s heart when his plight was highlighted through the #MyBoy fundraising campaign
THE Irish Road Haulage Association has withdrawn threats of further protest action after Government ministers agreed to meet. Hauliers brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill around Dublin Port on Monday in protest over higher road tax for trucks in Ireland compared with their UK counterparts.

Dublin house prices up Victims ‘may have been 23% on 2013, CSO reveals let down’, SF leader says DUBLIN house prices rose by 2.4 per cent in the month and were 22.6 per cent higher compared to a year earlier. Including apartments, residential property prices in Dublin grew by 2.5 per cent in September and are 23.4 per cent higher than a year ago, a report by the Central Statistics Office revealed. Apartment prices in the capital, meanwhile, were 35.2 per cent higher when compared with the same month of 2013. However, this is based on a low number of transactions. Overall, there was a 15 per cent increase in residential property prices nationally in the year to September, with a 1.8 per cent rise in the month of September. Property consultants Savills said that a slow-down in the rate of house price growth in Dublin may represent the beginning of a new phase of more moderate growth. Meanwhile, some 588 apartments across seven residential developments around Dublin are to come to market as part of Nama’s ‘Plum Portfolio’. However, it won’t offer much respite to house hunters as all but 13 of the units are currently occupied. Commercial and retail space is also included in the €116million project.

Mr Adams repeated his assertions made earlier this week that the IRA sought to deal with some allegations of abuse in some areas when the organisation was approached by families. ‘I am acutely conscious that there may be victims who were let down or failed by the IRA’s inability to resolve these cases. I want to apologise to these victims,’ he said. Mr Adams appealed for anyone with allegations of abuse to go to the authorities. ‘To cover up child abuse is to deny the basic humanity of the victim and to shield the perpetrator, it is an unthinkable act of cruelty,’ he said. ‘Sinn Féin has not engaged in a cover-up of child abuse,’ he added. Mr Adams admitted in a blog earlier this week that the IRA had shot alleged sex abusers, conceding that its members were ‘singularly ill-equipped to deal with these matters’.

O’Dea: I won’t give PPS No to Irish Water Fianna Fáil spokesperson on social protection Willie O’Dea has said he is not convinced that irish Water is giving good enough reasons for requesting his PPS number. Speaking on RTÉ’s news at One, Mr O’Dea said that there were consequences and a danger in giving a PPS number to a third party. He reiterated his position that he will not be giving his details to the company. He added, however, that he is not advocating that others follow his example. instead of irish Water requesting PPS numbers, Mr O’Dea suggested that the company operate a system whereby householders self-declare and where the company audits people, on a random basis, by verifying information with the Department of Social Protection. A SMALL business leader has attacked the idea of a ‘living wage’ of €11.45 an hour as being made up by people who believed in Santa Claus. In an email to members ahead of its annual conference, Isme chief Mark Fielding lambasted the Government for failing to support private enterprise. He said taxes imposed on the self-employed in the Budget were ‘anti-business’. Mr Fielding said the Government had done nothing ‘to get desperately needed capital to drowning businesses and, with an election looming, the public sector unions were beginning to seek either “restoration” of wages cut... or, Isme chief: more ominously, a Mark Fielding living wage’. On the ‘living wage’ – which campaigners say aims to increase wages to ‘a minimum acceptable standard of living’ – Mr Fielding labelled the notion ‘a concoction’. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions said several countries had successfully brought in the social measure, such as Britain. Ireland’s minimum wage is €8.65 an hour.

Xmas ‘propaganda’ tower comes down
APPLE has issued a security warning for its iCloud online storage service after reports of hackers targeting users in China. The US computer giant did not mention any country or provide details of the attacks, but several users had reportedly been diverted to a bogus website when they tried to log on. Apple CEO Tim Cook and China’s vice-premier Ma Kai discussed protecting information during a meeting in the country yesterday, according to the state news agency Xinhua. Apple said on its support website: ‘We’re aware of intermittent organised network attacks using insecure certificates to obtain user information and we take this very seriously.’ That scam is known as a ‘man in the middle’ attack. It could allow a third party to copy and steal the passwords that users enter when they think they are signing in to Apple’s service. Hackers
by SHAROn MARRiS could then use the passwords to collect data from the users’ accounts. Chinese activists have blamed the attacks on the country’s government following the release of the iPhone 6, which has software with enhanced encryption features to protect data. Apple has suggested users should check they are connected to a legitimate iCloud server by using security features built into browsers such as Safari, Firefox and Google’s Chrome. These will warn users if the site does not display an authentic digital certificate. Apple said: ‘If users get an invalid certificate warning in their browser while visiting www.icloud. com, they should pay attention to the warning and not proceed.’ The latest scare appears unrelated to the ‘phishing attacks’ that led to a leak of nude celebrity photos last month.
SOUTH kOREA: Demolition crews have pulled down a border watchtower that used to be lit up at Christmas – a custom decried by the communist North as the display was visible to its citizens. The conical steel tower – which Christians would dress up like a Christmas tree with a cross on the top – was deemed unsafe, officials said. The festive display was seen as propaganda by the North. It was banned from 2004 as the nations tried to reconcile but appeared again in 2010 and 2012.
Police under fire over serial killer AMERiCA: The violent past of an ex-marine who has confessed to killing seven women has emerged. Darren Vann has been charged with one murder in Gary, Indiana, but hinted there may be even more victims. Police were criticised yesterday after they admitted Vann was ‘not on our radar’ over the murders. It also emerged Vann, 43, was jailed for rape in Texas in 2009. And he doused a woman in petrol and threatened to burn her in 2004.

CONVICTED rapist Ched Evans, who was released last week after serving half of a five-year jail term, has said he is ‘determined to continue the fight’ to clear his name. TATTOO TEAcHER TOLD ‘gO HOME AnD cOvER up’
Charlotte Tumilty has several tattoos on her arms, chest and neck
A TRAINEE teacher was sent home from school on her first day and told to cover her tattoos with bandages. Charlotte Tumilty was asked to leave within an hour of starting work as a teaching assistant at St John Vianney’s Primary School, England on Monday. The 26-year-old said she was told her tattoos were inappropriate in the ‘strict Catholic’ school in Hartlepool. Ms Tumilty, a mother of two, said she was told she could come back as long as she had plasters and bandages covering her inkwork. She said: ‘It ticks me off. They said I could maybe start later but I don’t think it’s going to get anywhere because you can still see bits of my tattoos.’ Ms Tumilty has full ‘sleeves’ of tattoos on her arms and legs, along with small ones on her fingers, hands, back, chest and neck. She said: ‘I suggested a higher-necked top. The woman said: “That’s not the point, it’s a strictly Catholic school and tattoos are forbidden.”’ Ms Tumilty said when she went for an interview to secure her placement, staff could see her tattoos – but she did promise to take out her piercings. Deputy headteacher Martin Boagey said at no point did the school say Ms Tumilty could not work there but it has a code of conduct, ‘part of which requires members of staff with tattoos to cover them up’. He added: ‘We do have members of staff with tattoos, and they are happy to abide by the code of conduct.’

law student hit sleeping girl in face with penis A UK student whose ambition was to become a solicitor has been jailed for drunkenly slapping a sleeping woman in the face with his penis. John Dale took advantage of the victim after she dozed off at a house party in Nottingham last year, a court heard. A friend used a phone to film him as he stripped to his boxer shorts, leaned over her and struck her on the cheek. The crime only came to light when the friend showed the video footage to workmates and police were called. Criminology undergraduate Dale, 21, tried to get his sentence cut on Tuesday after being jailed for nine months at Nottingham crown court in September. But his application was rejected at the Court of Appeal in London, where Judge Alistair McCreath said: ‘One can see in stark form the distress caused to the victim of this offence and the continuing nature of it. The sentence which the crown court judge imposed cannot
possibly be wrong in principle.’ The woman said in a victim impact statement that learning of the video’s existence had made her feel violated. ‘It makes me think that the video could still be out there in someone’s possession,’ she said. ‘Knowing that it could exist petrifies me.’ Dale, from Milton Keynes, England, left his hopes of a law career in tatters when he pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Pistorius starts his prison term in the hospital wing by DANIEL BINNS
GUN killer Oscar Pistorius saw a chaplain and psychologist before starting his first night on a prison hospital wing. The 27-year-old was sent to the kgosi Mampuru ii jail in Pretoria on Tuesday after being sentenced to five years for shooting dead his girlfriend reeva Steenkamp. He has swapped the exclusive gated community of Silver Woods estate, Pretoria, for a wing containing eight other disabled convicts. One inmate has prosthetic legs, two are blind men and five other offenders are in wheelchairs. At least he has escaped the prison’s over-crowded cells. Designed for 40 people, they are rumoured to house up to 80 men in squalid conditions. The hospital wing, which is under 24-hour observation, has two nurses on duty. Pistorius has his own shower, bed, sheets, mattress and toilet. Prison commissioner Zebilon Monama said the measures have been taken ‘because of his vulnerability... it is my responsibility to protect

tense’ when he was admitted and described him as ‘deurmekaar’. That is Afrikaans for confused or muddled. Pistorius will be allowed to keep his prosthetic legs but may have to remove them at night if staff deem them to be a security risk. At his sentencing hearing, the ath-
lete’s defence team argued he would be at risk of gang rape and other violence from prisoners if he was jailed. They also cited a South African gang boss who reportedly threatened to ‘take out’ Pistorius if he was imprisoned. The prison insists he will be kept safe.
Parents: Mr and Mrs Steenkamp
Reeva’s family: We forgive killer Oscar
REEVA STEENKAMP’S parents say they have forgiven Oscar Pistorius for their daughter’s death and accepted his fiveyear sentence. However, June and Barry Steenkamp said ‘only Oscar knows’ the truth behind the shooting at his house on Valentine’s Day last year. Mrs Steenkamp said she does ‘not feel that justice has been done’ but has forgiven the athlete because hate ‘will make you ill’. Her husband told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: ‘If there is more to this unfortunate saga, it is only Oscar Pistorius that knows and he is the one that will have to live with it for the rest of his life.’

Django actress is charged with lewd behaviour
A STAR of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has been charged with lewd conduct after allegedly having sex in a car with her boyfriend. Actress Danièle Watts claimed she had only been ‘showing affection, fully clothed’ to Brian Lucas – and accused police of targeting her because she is black and he is white. But despite her protestations, prosecutors have decided to put both her and Lucas, 43, in the dock. They each face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 (€790) fine if convicted. A spokesman for Ms Watts, who played house slave Coco, declined to comment on the charges. The actress, who also played a policewoman in comedy series Weeds and appears in new sitcom Partners, burst into

tears as officers handcuffed her outside a Los Angeles film studio. She said she had faced racism all her life and added: ‘I’m an actress at this studio! I’m in a major sitcom and I’m Cuffed: Watts (seen right in Django Unchained) sobs during her arrest still being put in handcuffs because I’m making out with my boyfriend.’ The LAPD opened an internal investigation into the 28-year-old’s treatment following her complaints. But footage later emerged of her allegedly straddling Mr Lucas, a celebrity chef, inside a silver Mercedes. The arresting officers – a woman, a hispanic man and a gay white man – said they had simply followed up a complaint from a passer-by that the couple were indecently exposed.
Social workers failed to look into paedophile ring threat The threat of a paedophile ring operating in parts of Donegal was not properly monitored by social workers, watchdogs have warned. An inspection of child protection in the county last May uncovered a lack of staff and glaring gaps in how the risks to children from institutional or organised abuse were managed. Social work staff – part of the Tusla Child and Family Agency since January – had limited resources and used inadequate systems to identify potential abusers in the area. The review, by the health Information and Quality Authority (hiqa), found good efforts were made to manage the risks posed by convicted and alleged offenders, but that the systems were not robust or safe enough. ‘This included systems to identify potential organised abuse in the locality,’ the hiqa report found. Inspectors found minimal contact between social workers and

probation officers, and the assessment service to monitor suspect adults had a waiting list because of a lack of resources. Inspectors reviewed a number of adult cases awaiting an assessment and reported that the immediate risk to children was not known at the time. hiqa found that one case did not show that potential organised abuse was considered. The agency said its inspectors immediately moved to improve this failing and called on social services to review the case.

RENÉE ZELLWEGER has welcomed the fanfare surrounding her dramatic image overhaul. The Bridget Jones actress, 45, revealed that she is feeling healthy for the first time in years after appearing at a Beverly Hills awards do on Monday looking virtually unrecognisable. She ditched her famous porcelain looks for a tanned complexion. ‘I’m glad folks think I look different! I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows,’ said the star, who has battled speculation about her weight for a number of years. ‘My friends say that I look peaceful. I am healthy. For a long time I wasn’t doing such a good job with that. I took on a schedule that is not realistically sustainable and didn’t allow for taking care of myself.’ Zellweger says she is happier to look older and healthy rather than be exhausted and making bad choices. ‘Rather than stopping to recalibrate, I kept running until I was depleted and made bad choices about how to conceal the exhaustion,’ she told People magazine. ‘I was aware of the chaos and finally chose different things. People don’t know me in my 40s. People don’t know me as healthy. ‘Perhaps I look different. Who doesn’t as they get older? Ha. But I am different. I’m happy.’

he recent jailing of innocent Peter Barlow has once again demonstrated the serious shortcomings in British justice with which we in this country are all too familiar. We cannot let yet another miscarriage of justice go unheeded and must mobilise now so Peter does not spend 17 years or more behind bars. Please let your TD know your feelings and sign our online facebook petition ‘freepeterbarlow’. We are also holding a candlelit vigil outside the British embassy in Ballsbridge at 6pm on Saturday. With the public support we will win Peter’s freedom. Justice For Peter Campaign ■ Does anyone else out there get peeved with people smoking on train platforms? I have had to move

Whilst unfortunate, I would rather see the same space and photos dedicated to Pippin. Little 12-week-old Pippin was dumped in a box, emaciated, ten days ago in Ballina and sadly died on Sunday despite the valiant efforts of North West SPCA Ballina. I really feel his short and painful little life deserves so much recognition, and for him to be remembered and for his story to be told. he is just one of many who met the same fate last week. STEp 2: Blend a nude creambased eyeshadow primer over the eyelid to allow your eyeshadow to stay put. Then apply a nude eyeshadow. STEp 3: Prep the skin with a primer then apply your chosen foundation. Contour with a foundation or concealer in a medium shade and set with a translucent pressed powder. STEp 4: Apply pink powder blusher to the apples of the cheeks, sweeping up into the temples. STEp 5: Line the top and bottom of the eye with a black gel liner. Apply lashings of black mascara.

STEp 7: Block out your brow using Pritt Stick. Using a nude pencil, mark a guide circle around the eye and cheekbone ready for the next step. STEp 8: Fill in the eye area with black eyeliner then dab Illamasqua’s Pure Pigment in Static over it – it appears white but it’s transparent so against the black it reveals the colour. STEp 9: Using lash glue and tweezers, apply gems around the edge of the black eye area. Then apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes. STEp 10: Apply a sheer foundation as a base and then layer with a foundation much lighter than your skin tone. Set with a white pressed powder.
STEp 12: Draw in the skull nose on one side of the face with a gel eye liner. As you did on the eye, pat pigment on to the nose with a flat brush. STEp 13: Using a red lipstick, draw teardrop shapes on to the cheek using a lip brush. STEp 14: With the same lipstick, use a flat eyeshadow brush to draw outward from the centre of the lips and blend. Next, apply a pink powder blusher to the centre of the chin. STEp 15: For the ‘teeth’, use a black waterproof liquid liner to draw in the sharp lines. Finish by adding more gems if desired.

Schmidt at paynes to quash selection theory by DANNy HOgAN Joe Schmidt has angrily denied influencing provincial selection, rubbishing suggestions he has ‘blocked’ darren cave’s path back to the ireland squad. head coach Schmidt has confirmed Robbie henshaw and Jared Payne will fight it out for ireland’s No.13 shirt in the upcoming Guinness test series. henshaw and Payne face a shoot-out to replace the retired Brian o’driscoll, with Ulster centre cave overlooked for ireland’s autumn ranks. cave last year claimed his ‘face doesn’t fit’ with the ireland set-up, while eoin Griffin left connacht for London irish in the summer, frustrated by his lack of national chances. Schmidt insisted he is monitoring the progress of both centres, but blasted the idea that he orders provincial coaches to select players in positions of his choosing.
‘It’s a misnomer I influence provincial selection’ ‘We’ve probably gone with Robbie henshaw and Jared Payne: they are the two guys who are playing 13,’ said Schmidt, speaking at the launch of a new Guinness advertising campaign in dublin. ‘i think there has been a massive misnomer that i influence provincial selection. that is absolutely untrue: the guys that are selected in the centre, or to carry water, are nothing to do with my selections. ‘they are the provincial coaches, they are looking to do their best for the province and that’s the way it should be. ‘For someone to imply that darren cave has been blocked is wrong: he’s very much on our radar ... [he] had a shoulder operation; he’s come back from injury, then had a rib injury. ‘to say that eoin Griffin may have left because he saw the writing on the wall is massively disappointing: he is still on our radar, we keep an eye on what’s happening at London irish. ‘Selection is a tough enough job without the impression we’re influencing things. the Kiwi defended his decision to omit Paddy Jackson from the squad, claiming the Ulster fly-half needs regular club rugby after injuries. SpORT DIgEST Peak preview is Froome might not compete in Tour cycLINg CHRIS FROOMe caused controversy yesterday when he reacted to the unveiling of next year’s Tour de France route by hinting he may skip the race. The 2013 winner said six mountain-top finishes and little time-trialling does not suit him and may instead ride the giro d’Italia and Vuelta a espana. ‘Next year’s Tour is going to be about the mountains. There’s little emphasis on time-trialling, which means the race will be decided up in the high mountains,’ said the Team Sky leader (above). ‘I see myself as quite a balanced gC [general classification] rider and the giro, with its inclusion of a long TT [time-trial] of 60km and tough uphill finishes, suits me well. If I did the giro I may also be able to get myself back to top shape for the Vuelta and go there with a realistic chance.’ The 2015 Tour was expected to be a vintage year, with Froome, reigning champ Vicenzo Nibali, two-time winner Alberto Contador and giro winner Nairo Quintana involved.

BAtE Borisov have been charged by Uefa after fans racially abused Shakhtar Donetsk’s Luiz Adriano. the referee suspended the game, which Shakhtar went on to win 7-0.
Platini’s stance softens
CLUBS may be told to let only women and children into European ties as punishment for racist behaviour. Uefa revealed the idea on the day it confirmed no action would be taken against CSKA Moscow for apparently having 300 fans at Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester City, a match supposedly being played behind closed doors. Skipper Vincent Kompany called it ‘unacceptable’ – particularly since City fans were not allowed to attend the 2-2 draw even though it was the Russian side being punished for repeated cases of racist chanting. Uefa press officer Pedro Pinto said the ‘supporters’ were guests of sponsors, staff or parents of ball boys not covered from the stadium ban and revealed Michel Platini, president of European football’s ruling body,
was putting forward an alternative scheme. ‘Mr Platini is open to discussing it inside Uefa to see if it is better overall for fans and the image of football,’ said Pinto. ‘The women and children would not have to pay so the club would still incur a financial penalty.’ The ‘women and children only’ scheme, previously imposed at Turkish side Fenerbahce to combat hooliganism, is likely to cut little ice with the City fans not allowed into the Khimki Arena. Tuesday’s draw leaves City facing an uphill task to reach the last 16 after collecting just two points from three group games. However, Kompany insisted: ‘I’m 100 per cent convinced we’ll overturn it. People forget we had a strong group stage last year. ‘This year we’ve made it more difficult than it has to be.’

ARSENAL gave Arsene Wenger a 65th birthday present he will never forget after turning a miserable performance into a sensational victory last night. The Gunners were in the depths of despair with just a minute to go until Kieran Gibbs produced a delightful finish from Calum Chambers’ deep cross. Then Lukas Podolski swooped on a loose ball to fire a stoppage-time winner after man-of-the-match Alexis Sanchez had kept the play alive. Wenger had said ahead of the game that, despite reaching retirement age, he was hungrier than ever to win the Champions League for the first time. For most of the night that looked little more than a pipedream and neither side managed a single attempt on target
Leveller: Gibbs and Nacho Monreal celebrate during a dismal first half. Arsenal were woken into life after Ibrahima Conte’s shot was deflected wide at the start of the second half and Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla wasted gilt-edged chances. But disaster struck in the 71st-minute when Andy Najar powerfully headed the Belgian champions in front. The Gunners looked more likely to implode than fight back as Anthony Vanden Borre hit the bar and stand-in keeper Emiliano Martinez saved well from Matias Suarez. But Gibbs and Podolski struck late to hand Wenger a birthday boost.

LiveRpooL. ..........0 ReaL madRid ...... 3 by Danny griffiths CRISTIANO RONALDO inspired Real Madrid to a crushing victory as they outclassed Liverpool. The former Manchester United star had never scored at Anfield in five previous visits but he opened the floodgates in the 23rd minute of a one-sided encounter. James Rodriguez floated a glorious pass into the Liverpool area and Ronaldo ran past three defenders to whip a divine finish past the stranded Simon Mignolet. The Reds had started at a fast tempo in a bid to unsettle the Champions League holders but could not cope as Real turned the screw to put the game out of sight before the interval. They went further ahead when the home side failed to clear a corner on the half-hour and Karim Benzema headed in a Toni Kroos cross at the far post. The France international then grabbed his second four minutes before the break when he flicked in from a couple of yards after sloppy defending at another corner. Philippe Coutinho’s 25-yard blast hit the far post with the last kick of the half but this was already a lost cause. Ineffective Mario Balotelli was replaced by Adam Lallana and the Reds were better in the second half as Real, without the injured Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos, stepped off the gas with one eye on Saturday’s trip to Barcelona. Ronaldo and the impressive Rodriguez could have added more goals and, such was Real’s dominance, the former was withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining.

A tale of two Ians as Schmidt picks Keatley alongside Madigan IRELAND head coach Joe Schmidt has said that he is looking forward to having uncapped flyhalf Ian Keatley in the Ireland camp ahead of this November’s autumn Test series. Keatley, who played a starring role in Munster’s last-gasp win over Sale Sharks at the weekend, was selected along with Leinster’s Ian Madigan to understudy firstchoice out-half Johnny Sexton. Keatley’s gain is Paddy Jackson’s loss, however, with the Ulster No.10 missing the cut over concerns of match-fitness. ‘The best springboard for someone like Ian Keatley, who hasn’t been in our camp before, is to demonstrate a level of performance and progress,’ said Schmidt. ‘Let’s find out a little bit more
about Ian in a match squad, or at least in a wider squad, how he trains with us, what are the elements of his game he needs to do a bit of work on and how they’re going.’ Despite the Munster kicker missing out on Ireland’s tour to
‘Let’s find out more about Ian in a squad’ Argentina during the summer, Schmidt has been impressed by the way the Leinster-born Keatley has conducted himself. ‘I think he did really well in [Munster’s Heineken Cup semifinal defeat to] Toulon last year, that almost got him onto the tour. We went with Ian Madigan because, at that stage, it was a
very tight time frame. ‘Ian Keatley has been there for a great length of time. He did very well [on the Emerging Ireland tour] in Georgia. And the feedback from the coaching staff there is that he leaded and performed very well. ‘There was a couple of hiccups early on in the season that he broke out of with the last kick of the
game, how he kicked during the game, and those are the things that we want to get him in to camp to have a good look at, what he’s doing and all those aspects of his game rather than saying “that aspect is not good enough” and he doesn’t get selected. ‘That’s part of opportunities rather than just on the pitch, it’s us getting to know him a little more and trying to help in some of the areas he needs some progression in.
Ian with a chance: Joe Schmidt has been impressed with Keatley’s recent form
‘I thought in the lead-up to Conor Murray scoring at the weekend, he took the ball square and really fought his way forward. There’s just little snippets that he did pretty impressively. He kicked well out of hand but then there was that one where he kicked it out on the full and they had to come back. ‘[It’s important] they know all those little snippets of the game. We don’t need to talk about all of the snippets. We talk mostly about the specifics of where they’re going and what they’re looking to improve, and what they’re working hard on and what they’re good at because that’s how they get picked, by being good at things.’
