‘Blackmail’ letter that forced bailout by some as the Frankfurt central bank pushing Ireland into a bailout. ‘It is the position of the (eCB) Governing Council that it is only if we receive in writing a commitment from the Irish Government vis-a-vis the eurosystem on the four following points that we can authorise further provisions of elA to Irish financial institutions,’ Mr trichet wrote. public expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin said the letters – published only after a three-year campaign by journalists at theStory.ie only for the first to be leaked to the Irish times yesterday morning – would shock many. However, eCB president Mario Draghi said the decision was the Government’s own: ‘It was not the eCB forcing [it] to do this.’ Declining to blame the eCB, taoiseach enda Kenny said the roots of the financial crisis were the election of the Fianna Fáil-led government in 1997.

A top-level threat to cut emergency european funding to Ireland days before the country sought a humiliating international bailout will ‘shock’ people, a senior government minister said. letters released yesterday by the european Central Bank (eCB) in the wake of a leak confirm the Irish Government was warned crisis funds propping up collapsed banks in 2010 would be withdrawn unless they asked for an €85billion rescue. the missive from then-eCB president Jean-Claude trichet to the late former finance minister Brian lenihan also demanded a written commitment to punishing austerity measures, spending cutbacks and an overhaul of the financial industry. Irish banks were surviving on emergency funding – known as emergency liquidity assistance (elA) – at the time and if stopped it could have effectively shut down the property-crash-ravaged lenders. Mr trichet urged a speedy response to his proposals, which have been interpreted

Hunter: Montana man Rob O’Neill in a video from his days as a US Navy SEAL

Bin Laden’s killer reveals all in dispute over pension
Navy seal to talk about string of heroic rescues in interview THE US Navy SEAL who shot dead terror chief Osama bin Laden has finally been unmasked. Rob O’Neill, 38, has been revealed as the commando who fired the fatal shot which killed the al-Qaeda leader in a 2011 raid on his secret compound in Pakistan. The highly decorated former serviceman is due to break the SEAL’s code of secrecy in an interview with Fox News next week in protest at his pension being cut because he retired early. Mr O’Neill went on more than 400
by DANIEL BINNS missions during his 16-year career and his exploits have helped spawn at least three Hollywood films. The Montana man’s decision to go public has been met with fury in the Pentagon, which has warned he could face legal action. But despite the threats and fears he could put his family in danger, Mr O’Neill’s father Tom said he fully supported his son. ‘People are asking if we are worried
[Islamic State] will come and get us. I say I’ll paint a big target on my front door and say come get us. We shouldn’t be cowering in fear,’ he said. It has also emerged that Mr O’Neill led the mission to rescue the crew of the Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. He also helped save colleague Marcus Luttrell, the only SEAL to escape alive from a failed mission to capture a Taliban leader in Afghanistan, which was turned into the movie Lone Survivor.

Fake Tinder girls show true face of sex trafficking DATING app Tinder might be where you find true love but campaigners are now using the platform to highlight the issue of sex trafficking. The Immigrant Council of Ireland and eightytwenty launched the campaign yesterday to confront love-seekers with the reality of sex trafficking and prostitution. A large number of profiles on the dating app were created which show sample stories of victims of sex trafficking. The profiles feature pictures of girls which illustrate the impact of sex trafficking, ending with messages related to the issues they face. The reception to the campaign was very positive, a spokesperson said. A large number of comments from users spoke of their shock on hearing about the realities of sex trafficking in a modern society. Denise Charlton, chief executive
by ORnA CunningHAM
of the Immigrant Council of Ireland, said: ‘Sex trafficking is one of the most lucrative crimes, with the sums involved on a par with those for drug smuggling and gun running, yet many people are not aware that it is a reality in communities right across Ireland. ‘The Immigrant Council of Ireland is committed to using every
‘Many people are not aware it is a reality’ possible opportunity to increase awareness about the activities of the thugs behind these crimes and the impact on their victims. ‘As a frontline agency, we have supported 60 women brought here
to be sexually exploited while senior gardaí confirm that Irish prostitution is run by foreign and domestic criminal gangs in a trade thought to net over €200 million a year. ‘It is important that the men of all ages who buy sex are made aware of the consequences of their actions. ‘We are delighted to partner with the team at eightytwenty to bring this important message to an audience which is difficult to reach through traditional media.’ Cathal Gillen of eightytwenty said it was the first use of Tinder in Ireland for such a campaign and one of the first globally. ‘Tinder has become an extremely popular app in Ireland and it provides us with a unique, innovative and stand-out way of communicating to men the issues faced by women involved in sex trafficking.’

Gardaí seize €180,000 of drugs in ‘darknet’ sting
Bog being searched for Disappeared victim
GARDAÍ in Dublin have arrested two men after smashing a suspected global drug-dealing operation using a hidden corner of the internet known as ‘the darknet’. An international investigation identified an Irish suspect as being behind an online distribution network which had customer addresses across the world. Gardaí said the operation was based at a secured premises on the South Circular Road. They are the first arrests and seizures relating to drug dealing on the hidden internet in Ireland. After weeks of surveillance, as part of a global effort involving Europol and the FBI, officers moved in on the site on Wednesday. Ecstasy tablets, LSD and other illegal drugs valued at around €180,000 were seized. Investigators launched a follow-up search in Harold’s Cross, seizing more drugs as well as records of offshore bank accounts in Switzerland, Belize, Poland and other countries.
INITIAL searches for one of the IRA’s ‘Disappeared’ victims have started in the same bog where another body was recently found. Forensic investigators are scanning sections of Oristown bog, Co Meath, with radar for the remains of former west Belfast monk Joe Lynskey. Mr Lynskey went missing in 1972 but it was only in 2010 when the IRA admitted to executing and burying him. The move comes a month after the remains of Brendan Megraw were finally found in a ditch in the middle of the bog 36 years after he vanished. A commissioner for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains (ICLVR) said ‘new information’ had prompted the search for Mr Lynskey’s remains. The commission – set up in the wake of the Good Friday Agreement – was tasked with investigating the cases of 16 people killed and secretly buried by republicans during the Troubles. Mr Lynskey is one of six victims still to be found.

Luxembourg’s tax-shifting ‘industry’ laid bare by leaks by ORnA cunningHAM
the rules changed globally, Luxembourg would ‘apply them quickly’. the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists said the practice in Luxembourg was widespread after it pored through some 28,000 pages of leaked documents covering some 340 businesses that could be linked to the Grand Duchy for special tax deals. european Parliament President Martin Schulz said what was most worrying was that nations can say the deals are legal. Luxembourg developed its tax avoidance ‘industry’ when new european Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, was finance minister there. Ireland and the Netherlands are already under eU investigation over sweetheart tax deals with foreign multinationals, and yesterday enda Kenny said: ‘Clearly this affects all countries and we’ve very happy to participate and be upfront and play our part with all other countries in bringing about a global response to this particular phenomenon.’ Oxfam Ireland said the revelations highlighted a ‘toxic global tax system depriving nations of billions’.
Double-Irish scheme ‘had to go’ IRELAND was right to move on the ‘double Irish’ and it is time for other countries to follow suit, Fine Gael MEP for Dublin Brian Hayes said yesterday. The former minister of state at the Department of Finance was speaking at a public meeting on tax reform organised by Dublin Bay South TD Eoghan Murphy. He said: ‘In an era of increasing international cooperation on the issue of tax, Michael Noonan made the right call in clearing up some legacy tax practices.

LUXeMBOUrG’S sweetheart tax deals with hundreds of foreign firms were laid bare yesterday in an investigation by journalists around the globe. Leaked documents allegedly reveal the extent to which it has attracted multinationals and the super-rich with tax-reducing deals, depriving other countries of valuable tax revenue. Some of those are Irish, with food company Glanbia moved €1billion into the state of just 520,000 people in order to drastically reduce its tax bill, the Irish times reported yesterday. the government of Luxembourg said it had done nothing illegal in its deals with corporations including Pepsi and Ikea. But other european nations, including neighbour France, criticised the tiny country’s tax practices – particularly when they have to impose austerity cuts on their citizens to make ends meet. ‘tax “optimization” – companies that legally find solutions to pay little or no taxes – that is no longer acceptable for any country,’ said French Finance Minister Michel Sapin. Luxembourg Finance Minister Pierre Gramegna insisted: ‘What has happened here is totally legal’, adding that when

The truth of the matter is that the double Irish tax arrangement was bad for Ireland’s reputation abroad. ‘With Ireland having taken action, other EU countries should follow suit. There is now a growing international consensus on the need to stamp out tax avoidance practices,’ he said. He defended Ireland’s corporate tax rate of 12.5 per cent and said it was ‘crucial’ to the State’s industrial policy to keep it there. Ireland was forced to examine the ‘double-Irish’ after global attention.
Water charges are to be slashed by €100 for every Irish household under plans by the Government to quell public fury over Irish Water, it has been claimed. rumoured to be in the works last week, the planned payment will come into effect next year for those who register with the utility and will be made via the Department of Social Protection. Previously it was thought the Government was planning to give a €100 benefit to welfare recipients and tax relief worth up to €100
annually to ensure every household received the same benefit. the anti-austerity alliance yesterday condemned Health Minister Varadkar’s claim ‘sinister fringe’ elements have taken hold in the water protests after several protesters were arrested in Coolock on Wednesday. Cllr Michael O’Brien said attempts to tar protesters as abusing gardaí was a desperate effort by the minister to ‘discredit the anti-water charge movement and to cover up for the thuggish behaviour of the Gardaí’.

EU’s €280m proposal to fight Ebola THe european Commission and the european pharmaceutical industry have launched a €280million call for proposals to boost eU ebola research. The funding, under the Innovative medicines Initiative (ImI), will cover urgent actions addressing the current epidemic and put in place a long-term strategy to manage any future outbreaks. Some €140million will come from Horizon 2020, the eU’s framework programme for research and innovation, and €140million from the pharmaceutical companies that make up the european Pharmaceutical Federation.

Symphysiotomy survivors’ anger at redress deadline As the Government published details for the redress scheme for victims of surgical symphysiotomy while giving birth, several groups have slammed it for ‘putting a gun to the head of survivors’. Women who take part can receive awards at three levels – €50,000, €100,000 and €150,000 – but they must do so within 20 days, starting from next Monday, and also agree to drop any legal action against the state.
‘the scheme, as announced to the media, appears to form part of a pincer movement designed to force survivors to choose prematurely
‘We want draconian expiry date lifted’ between legal action and redress,’ said Marie O’Connor, chairperson of survivors of symphysiotomy. ‘the current time limit under
this discriminatory scheme is unprecedented, unreasonable and unworkable. the gates close in 20 days, making it impossible for women to seek independent advice and to make a considered decision. ‘We want this draconian expiry date lifted. the gates should remain open, as they were for victims of contaminated blood, those abused in residential institutions, and survivors of the Magdalene laundries,’ she insisted.

Neanderthal DNA still in our make-up A geNome taken from a 36,000-year-old skeleton has helped scientists shed new light on interbreeding between humans and Neanderthals. The study of DNA recovered from a fossil of one of the earliest known europeans – a man who lived in western Russia – shows a small percentage of Neanderthal genes, confirming previous findings which show a period when Neanderthals and the first humans to leave Africa for europe briefly interbred. This means that, even today, anyone with a eurasian ancestry has a small element of Neanderthal DNA, the University of Cambridge study found.
survivors of symphysiotomy said the scheme was announced yesterday morning without consultation and was ‘utterly unjust’ in its current form. ‘this is just about heading off the litigation that is now at the steps of the high Court,’ insisted Ms O’Connor, who added that the scheme was largely based on two reports that the UN human Rights Committee had heavily criticised.

A fOrMEr journalist has identified a detective who made a death threat against him when he was arrested over the murder of a film-maker in west Cork. Ian Bailey, 57, an English reporter who moved to west Cork more than 23 years ago, was twice taken in for questioning over the killing of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. The producer, 39, was found by two neighbours beaten to death outside her holiday home in west Cork on the morning of December 23, 1996. Mr Bailey was never prosecuted for the crime. In a second day of evidence in his High Bailey: Evidence Court lawsuit against the State for wrongful arrest, Mr Bailey detailed receiving a death threat on his first detention. ‘The driver of car told me even if we don’t pin this on you, you are finished in Ireland,’ Mr Bailey told the court. ‘You will be found dead in a ditch with a bullet in the back of your head. I interpreted that as a death threat. It haunts me to this day, honestly. It’s a bit of a nightmare really.’ Mr Bailey said three officers came to his home at Prairie Cottage, Liscaha, Schull, Co Cork, on the morning of february 10, 1997, to arrest him. In court he identified the driver of the garda car as a detective whom he named. Almost 20 years since the unsolved murder, Mr Bailey has taken a lawsuit for wrongful arrest and mistreatment by the Gardaí. The case is expected to last at least six weeks.
Bicycle thief must be hopping mad ONE thief was probably hopping mad last night after realising his ‘perfect crime’ wasn’t quite as clever as he initially thought. The thug held up a Metro Herald bike rider at knifepoint outside the Gaiety Theatre in the city before making off on his bike. Thankfully, no one was injured. However, what the robber didn’t realise was that he had stolen a very special and rather cool bike – the wheels of which light up with an advertisement when it’s on the move. The Metro Herald bike was displaying Hopr’s
friendly green frog, merrily waving – and wave the illuminous frog did, the whole way down the street, as the thief made off at speed. And if the eejit who stole the bike had been looking to get somewhere good, fast, he could have just downloaded Hopr itself – the free iOS and Android app lets users know where’s hopping in town. But there’s still no sign of our bike. So keep your eyes peeled and if you hear a ribbit, make sure to let us know at mail@metroherald.ie or tweet us @metrohnews.

Jackson style – that will be my nod. But I won’t be recreating the nipple flash that she did with Justin Timberlake. That would be a step too far. Simon is really smug that his four contestants are still in the show and he is smug at the best of times! I do honestly believe every judge has one potential winner. Although, Cheryl only has Lauren Platt left but I don’t think she will be going anywhere soon. Only The Young are an amazing group. And Stevi Ritchie has become a true wild card as he is also doing so well. It’s all to play for! Taking cameras into Simon’s dressing room last week was so much fun. It’s like one of those weird dreams you have after eating cheese late at night. Sinitta was there juggling, Niall from One Direction was there and there were loads of posh candles. It’s funny that is the reality! Cameras are not coming into my dressing room though. It is a mess! I have shoes everywhere.

Tearful Lily so glad for Sam’s support after she lost baby
LILY ALLEN has revealed how she manage to find a silver lining after her baby boy was stillborn four years ago. The tearful 29-year-old says losing the child made her appreciate husband, Sam Cooper, 37, more after revealing she is done ‘feeling sorry for myself’. ‘I think it’s difficult for anybody regardless of what world they live in and actually what I took home from that experience was… even though it was the most unfortunate thing that can ever happen to a person, I was very fortunate in the sense that I have a loving partner to go home to and share that experience with,’ she tells tomorrow night’s Jonathan Ross Show on ITV.

Fatou Bensouda said yesterday any cases relating to the storming ‘would not be of sufficient gravity to justify further action by the ICC’. Eight Turks and one Turkish-American were killed and several other pro-Palestinian activists wounded when commandos stormed the ship Mavi Marmara on May 31, 2010. THE top union boss in France is facing calls to resign after it emerged his socialist group spent €1,300 on a toilet seat for his flat. Thierry Lepaon was also treated to a €640 toilet roll holder as part of a €140,000 revamp of his Paris apartment by the CGT union. A spokesman for the right-wing UMP party said: ‘They are always telling us we are paid too much money. He shouldn’t be doing that job if he wants that kind of lifestyle.’ Mr Lepaon denied knowing about the cost of the refurbishment and said there had been ‘major flaws’ in the union’s decision-making process. The diehard leftist group claimed it had negotiated a rent reduction in exchange for the work but the owner denied any deal had been struck. Mr Lepaon said the person who leaked the story to the satirical Canard Enchaine newspaper ‘would be held responsible for their actions’.
AC/DC’s phil charged with murder plot AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd was yesterday charged with trying to hire a hitman to carry out a double murder. The 60-year-old, who has played for the legendary Australian rock band on and off since 1975, has also been cited for threatening to kill a person and possession of metamphetamine and cannabis. He was arrested in a police raid on his home in Tauranga, New Zealand, where he has lived since he was fired from the band in 1983. Rudd faces ten years in jail if found guilty of ‘attempting to procure murder’ and he didn’t submit a plea during his appearance at Tauranga district court yesterday. According to court documents, Rudd is accused of attempting to hire one person to kill two others between September 25 and September 26 and of threatening to kill a complainant on the later date. Judge Louis Bidois withheld the names of the alleged targets and hitman and bailed Rudd on condition he didn’t contact
by niCK pERRY anyone involved in the case. Court staff said Rudd was due to make a second appearance on November 27, although that date could change. A publicist for the band could not be immediately reached for further comment.

We can try to cover our vulnerabilities all we want, but they tend to rear their ugly heads and manifest in a lot of different ways. And with Fish Mooney, she’s just a broken, hurt woman who’s decided to function in a particular way.
Are you enjoying playing someone so complex, cutthroat and brutal? I am loving

about Batman’s world is that he’s not a guy with superpowers. He’s a regular person who had trauma and has spent his life just trying to get through, bringing justice to the world. There’s a bit of darkness that he has to deal with, and I think we can all relate to that – that’s part of the challenge of humanity. I’ve always found Batman to be the most relatable superhero.
Do you think there are more
How is that? Women are beautifully complex, and on TV we have the time to peel back those many layers. And so we have all these fantastic characters, like Claire Danes in Homeland and eva green as Vanessa Ives in Penny Dreadful – she’s probably my favourite character right now. How do you feel about playing a powerful woman in such a male-dominated world as a comic adaptation? That’s life; living in a world of patriarchy yet steeped in strong, formidable women. It’s like Hollywood.
The show is shot on location in New York. Do the two places feel very similar to you? I
feel like the show depicts gotham exactly how I had always imagined it to be. It’s kind of new York in the 1970s, when it had this lawlessness.
How has being married to another actor helped? Will

After Milo (Hader) tries to take his own life, he’s put in the care of his twin, Maggie (Wiig). The pair haven’t seen each other for ten years and camp, sarcastic Milo is surprised to find his sister married to a gung-ho outdoorsy type (Luke Wilson). Personalities clash and old wounds come to the surface as Milo tries to reconnect with his sister without putting his foot in it. Easier said than done. McConaughey is a relatable hero: sharp-witted, publicspirited, a family man. the last two qualities clash when the single father is asked to leave his kids light years behind – literally. Cooper tells daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) that they might be the same age when he returns to earth. Once the mission begins, the focus is on Cooper, Amelia and crew as they travel through space, making decisions that could cost more lives than their own. It’s leisurely
and visually stunning with bursts of excitement: one visit to a potential planet is particularly gripping. All this is undercut with the knowledge that Cooper’s loved ones are ageing back on earth. there’s a moving scene in which he watches video communications from home, tears streaming down his face. While she has a couple of strong scenes, hathaway is a little sidelined. Interstellar isn’t big on subtle, character-building dialogue, though Jessica Chastain puts in a poignant turn as the older Murph, bristling with abandonment issues. Interstellar is a long, ambitious film of many parts – some better than others. At its best, this recalls austere, intelligent sci-fis like 2001 and Moon, but just occasionally it’s cornier than the few remaining fields.

cLubs Bottin
Halloween may be over for most of us, but its ghoulish spirit lingers this weekend as Bottin makes a rare visit to Dublin. The Italian producer is one of the leading lights in contemporary disco, but if you’re looking for glitzy, carefree grooves you’re in the wrong place. over the course of two albums, Horror Disco and Punica Fides – both on Bear Funk – he moves through the darkest shadows of Italo, Cosmic Disco and spaced-out house, with Punica Fides even featuring contributions from former Visage vocalist Steve Strange. while Strange is unlikely to be present at this weekend’s gig, rest assured that Bottin will still be able to create the kind of dystopian environment that would make John Carpenter proud. Mandolin man: nickel Creek’s Chris Thile
Prepare for an eclectic picnic This prodigious 30-something mandolin player recorded his first solo album before his teens and stakes a claim for bluegrass immortality with flights of daring speed and lyricism; it’s little wonder he was invited to collaborate with everyone from the Coen Brothers on the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrack to Dolly Parton on her gorgeous Little Sparrow album. On paper the pairing of Thile with Mehldau seems like an unusual pooling of talent but, live, they refresh familiar tunes with inspired, off-kilter melodic configurations and pulseraising improvisation. expect an eclectic set taking in Broadway standards, folk pop classics (their feelgood, crowd-pleasing take on Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right is a particular highlight), and a smattering of alt-rock gems. Not to be missed.
The live pairing of Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau is bound to work wonders, writes Daragh Reddin The Brad Mehldau Trio have been in the vanguard of jazz innovation for the past 15 years, voraciously absorbing influences as diverse as Bartók and Black Sabbath to put a fresh spin on postbop and finding new audiences for their music in the process. The piano-playing frontman is no less impressive, or Catholic in his tastes, when performing solo or, in the case of this Sunday’s National Concert hall hook-up, duetting with one Chris Thile (Punch Brothers). California-born mandolin virtuoso Thile has taken the bluegrass style further than anyone – with the possible exception of David Grisman – and his Grammy-winning band, Nickel Creek, have notched up sales of several million.

HARRY KANE pounced to leave Tottenham on the brink of a place in the Europa League knockout stages. The striker’s goal against Asteras Tripolis was his third in as many matches and took his tally for the club to nine goals this season. Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will now have to seriously consider starting the 21-year-old ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado in Sunday’s Premier League home game with Stoke. ‘It was good to get another [goal],’ said Kane, who grabbed a hat-trick against the Greeks at White Hart Lane a fortnight ago. ‘These are the games

where you have to dig deep and get the result and we managed that.’ Kane struck just three minutes before the interval when he climbed high to meet a cross from Andros Townsend with a downward header. The England winger had rocketed the Londoners ahead in the 36th minute, picking himself up after he was brought down by Khalifa Sankare to score from the penalty spot. Spurs were under pressure after the break, with Facundo Parra firing wide when clean through and Pablo Mazza striking the inside of the far post. Jeronimo then converted a penalty in the 90th minute after he was fouled by Federico Fazio, who was sent off for the second time in four matches.

Clubs turf out move for artificial pitches FOOTBALL League clubs could not agree to artificial pitches being allowed in the third and fourth tiers of the game next season. A majority of votes was needed from clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two but 34 were in favour, 34 against with four clubs abstaining. ‘This issue divides opinion among clubs as much as it does across the football public,’ Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey said.
CELTIC blew the chance to claim a place in the last-32 of the Europa League as they let their lead vanish in the fog-bound Marin Anastasovici stadium. Ronny Deila’s side were heading for the knockout stages following Stefan Johansen’s deflected strike 32 minutes into a game that looked set to be postponed amid poor visibility at the start. But the Hoops defence stood off Brazilian William Amorim and he curled home a finish worthy of some of his more illustrious countrymen to claim a point. Charlie Mulgrew was lucky to escape unharmed from a shocking tackle from Vincent Laban, who was sent off. With Salzburg beating Dinamo Zagreb to go through, Celtic remain in a strong position, five points ahead of the Croatians with two games left. The match began in near-farcical conditions with serious discussion taking place over a postponement until lunchtime today, with thick fog making it impossible to see. Callum McGregor and Stefan Scepovic started in place of the ill Anthony Stokes and ineligible John Guidetti for the visitors. Craig Gordon also returned to the side and pulled off a stunning save in the 27th minute from Seidou Yahaya’s 20-yard drive. Celtic went ahead five minutes later. Mulgrew’s free-kick was blocked but the ball was only cleared as far as Johansen, who hammered a shot that nicked a defender and flew into the top corner. Silviu Lung held Mubarak Wakaso’s long-range strike while Asta had a penalty claim rejected just before the break as Jason Denayer tangled with Sadat Bukari after the striker broke clear. Celtic had a good chance to double their lead just after the break when Johansen fed Scepovic but the Serbian skied his effort. Leigh Griffiths replaced the ineffective Scepovic and had an immediate impact, being denied by a last-ditch tackle as he prepard to volley home. Rugby DigEsT Wales must beat big guns: Gatland wALEs Warren Gatland accepts that Wales need to ‘get across the line’ in their pursuit of a major rugby prize that has eluded them for six years. Not since November 2008 and the 11th game of head coach Gatland’s current 82-Test reign have Wales floored a southern hemisphere heavyweight. On that occasion it was tomorrow’s opening autumn Test opponents Australia, beaten 21-18 just eight months after Wales were crowned RBS 6 Nations champions in Grand Slam fashion. ‘We are aware we have been knocking on the door and put ourselves in situations on a number of occasions to win big games,’ Gatland said.
Hansen has high hopes for Williams nEw zEALAnD New Zealand head
coach Steve Hansen insists Sonny Bill Williams is a ‘massively better’ player in his second spell in rugby union. Williams stays at inside centre for tomorrow’s Test against England at Twickenham after scoring two tries in last weekend’s 74-6 victory over the US. It will be only his second union match since ending a twoyear stint in Australia’s National Rugby League. ‘Sonny Bill is massively better this time around. We saw what he was like against a tier-two nation, now we want to see what he’s like against a tier-one nation,’ Hansen said.
No Test pressure for Rokoduguni EngLAnD
England debutant Semesa Rokoduguni draws parallels between life in the British Army and international rugby – with one vital exception. Rokoduguni has been selected on the right wing for tomorrow’s Test against New Zealand at Twickenham. As a serving soldier, the Fijian-born 27-year-old was deployed in Afghanistan in 2011. ‘The other players have been asking me questions about the army and what it’s like being out there,’ Rokoduguni said. ‘I told them it is pretty similar to what you guys feel – the only difference is that here there is always a next time.’
Bennett a class act scOTLAnD Coach Vern Cotter knew Mark Bennett was international class as soon as he saw the new Scotland cap battle back from a devastating knee injury. The Glasgow centre has long been tipped as a future star for the Dark Blues, but will finally make his bow for the national team when they take on Argentina tomorrow. ‘The way he has bounced back from a serious injury in France is a reflection of the man – quiet and determined,’ said Cotter.

schmidt backs new centre pairing by DAnny HOgAn Joe Schmidt has defended pairing inexperienced centres Robbie henshaw and Jared Payne against South Africa rather than pressing Gordon d’Arcy into action. ireland boss Schmidt has long since identified connacht’s henshaw and Ulster’s Payne as the two men to fight it out to replace now-retired talisman Brian o’driscoll. Schmidt admitted the decision to pair the two men in a new-look midfield proved a surprise even to himself, given he had expected d’Arcy to be ready to start the autumn test series. the Kiwi head coach revealed Leinster stalwart d’Arcy has actually shaken off a calf problem – just not in time to be reasonably considered to face the Springboks in dublin tomorrow. ireland must wait a little longer to discover the great successor to o’driscoll, then, but Schmidt backed debutante Payne and 21-year-old henshaw to forge a threatening partnership. ‘it was what was available to us at the start of the week,’ Schmidt said of the henshaw-Payne pairing. ‘Robbie henshaw’s flexibility to play 12 or 13 is similar to Jared Payne, but that’s the way they trained last week, so we’ve decided to go with that.
‘It was what was available to us at the start of the week’ ‘Gordon was injured last week. he’s probably back to full fitness now but we weren’t absolutely sure of that at the beginning of the week. ‘We have very small windows of preparation so we just felt we were partway along a pathway that was looking reasonably positive. ‘We thought Gordon would be fit. he probably has made it, to be fair to him, but we hadn’t had any time with the combinations. ‘it was going to be a new pairing no matter what, so we just decided to go with what had been working together.’ Athlone-born henshaw will start at inside centre with 79-cap d’Arcy not included in the match squad at all. ireland swept to last term’s RBS 6 Nations with a centre pairing boasting a closing tally of 212 caps – against the Springboks Schmidt’s midfield will start the day with a combined test total of just three appearances. henshaw will line up against South Africa captain and 102-cap veteran Jean de Villiers, underlining the size of the task facing ireland’s new centre partnership. Former New Zealand Under-21 cap Payne will make his ireland debut after qualifying through residency, the 29-year-old having signed for Ulster in 2011. iRELAnD TEAM TO PLAy sOuTH AFRicA R Kearney (Leinster), T Bowe (Ulster), J Payne (Ulster), R Henshaw (Connacht), S Zebo (Munster), J Sexton (Racing Metro), C Murray (Munster), J McGrath, S Cronin, M Ross, D Toner (all Leinster), P O’Connell (Munster, capt), P O’Mahony (Munster), C Henry (Ulster), J Heaslip (Leinster). Magic Mike ‘needed big time’, says Cronin Sean Cronin believes ireland will need to draw on fit-again tighthead prop Mike ross ‘big-time’ against the Springboks. Hooker Cronin has stepped into the breach after rory Best failed to beat a calf problem, forming an all-Leinster front-row with ross and loosehead Jack McGrath. ireland must take on Heyneke Meyer’s formidable Springboks without injured prop trio Cian Healy, Marty Moore and nathan White, while ross returns after missing a month through groin trouble. Cronin boasts 35 caps but will make just his seventh ireland start in Saturday’s Dublin Test, keen to prove himself against a Springboks squad containing ‘two of the best hookers in the world’. ‘Mike brings a valuable amount of experience and it’s a good factor that the three of us play together,’ said Cronin. ‘all of their starting front-row play for the same Super rugby franchise as well. ‘They’ve a huge amount of experience, so we’re going to need Mike big-time on Saturday. ‘He has been able to do the scrummaging work. ‘it was a bit of chop and change last week but ever since we came back in at the weekend everyone’s been working in their core

groups, scrummaging and lineouts, so we’ve had plenty of time together. ‘and again, myself, Jack and Mike play together in our club rugby, which is great. ‘So at least it’s not too much of new surroundings there, we’re used to each other and that’s a major positive. ‘in terms of rory (Best), i think it’s just the fact it’s a calf strain and it’s very position-specific. ‘He needs his calf in a lot of aspects of the game for a hooker of course. ‘it’s just great they’re after giving me a chance, i’m really looking forward to it.’ Cronin’s ball-carrying threat could help ireland offset the loss of power-runners Healy and Sean o’Brien against the notoriously-physical Boks. The 28-year-old has hit rich form for Leinster this term, and is relishing the opportunity to face South africa’s hooking giants Bismarck du Plessis and adriaan Strauss. Leinster’s richardt Strauss is back in ireland action for the first time since June 2013 in taking a seat on the bench, after a year battling heart surgery and a hamstring torn off the bone. The South africa-born 28-year-old is likely to face his cousin adriaan Strauss if both replacement hookers join the weekend fray.

omitted veteran ‘has been a massive asset’ by DANNy HOgAN GORDON D’ARCY is expected to feature in the later autumn clashes against Georgia and Australia, Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has hinted. Veteran D’Arcy was omitted from the matchday squad to face South Africa tomorrow, but has been an invaluable help to the untested centre partnership of Jared Payne and Robbie Henshaw. The ex-Leinster coach admitted to being excited to see a bulked-up midfield in action against the Springboks, but warned aggression requires as much mental fuel as physical. ‘Ireland have been blessed with a centre pairing for a huge length of time that has not necessarily been the biggest but has been as physical as the best,’ said Schmidt. ‘Physicality is sometimes determined by
the will rather than the size. ‘Hopefully on Saturday we’ll get a bit of both from our centre pairing. ‘To be fair to Gordon D’Arcy, he has helped immeasurably. He’s been a really good mentor for Robbie and Jared this week. ‘To be honest, I didn’t tell the centres in advance – I just named the team. ‘It wasn’t too much of a surprise to them because they’d been running in there together. ‘I did speak to Gordon beforehand, and he’s very much team-orientated, as always. He’s been a massive asset to those two in training.’
Rodgers not sorry for his 7 changes BRendAn RodGeRS has accused Liverpool’s critics of playing fantasy football and insisted his decision to make seven changes for Tuesday’s game with Real Madrid was vindicated by the display. Rodgers was accused of effectively admitting defeat by resting players like Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard, though his team acquitted themselves well, a 1-0 Champions League loss did little to silence doubters. But, with Chelsea’s visit to Anfield tomorrow and an indifferent start to the season to arrest, the Reds boss said there is more to management
Unapologetic: Brendan Rodgers than simply picking your best players every week. ‘It is not fantasy football, it is not on sentiment or on a computer, when we are picking teams we are dealing with the reality of players and their physical condition and tactics,’ he said. ‘I know there has been criticism for the selection but I think it’s a disservice to the team that played. I don’t have to justify it, the players justified it the other night.’ Tomorrow’s game revives memories of Steven Gerrard’s slip against the Blues which helped scupper Liverpool’s title bid last April, but Rodgers’ said: ‘He has had hard moments in his career and he always responds magnificently – there was no blame.’

Reed sees red while G-mac finds form in Shanghai RydeR Cup star patrick Reed has apologised for an ‘unacceptable’ foul-mouthed outburst on the opening day of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai but is still set to be punished by the pGA Tour. As partner Graeme Mcdowell claimed a two-shot lead with a five-under-par 67 at Sheshan International – despite dropping two shots in the last six holes – Reed was turning the air blue.
Reed was just four off the pace after a round of 71, but the American faces a hefty fine after being caught on camera not only swearing at himself, but also using language which could be interpreted as homophobic. TV commentators apologised after Reed was clearly heard saying ‘nice f****** three-putt you f****** f****t,’ after a bogey on the first, his 10th of the day. The 24-year-old took to Twitter
later in the day, writing: ‘My passion to play well got the best of me and my word choice was unacceptable.’ Meanwhile, Mcdowell began on the back nine and played his first 12 holes in seven under par. But he then failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker on the fourth and paid the price for what he called ‘a comedy of errors’ on the par-five eighth, where he missed his only fairway
of the day and also pulled his approach left of the green. ‘Seven under par through 12 holes was a beautiful start. I dropped a couple coming in, but all in all, I am very, very pleased with five under par on what I thought was a reasonably tricky day,’ the ulster star said. Mcdowell had strapping on his left wrist but was quick to allay any injury fears, adding: ‘It’s nothing sinister.’
