burton’s anger at Murphy over ‘riot’

TÁNAISTE Joan Burton has criticised Dáil colleague Paul Murphy for his part in an anti-watercharge protest which saw her stuck in her car in Jobstown, Tallaght, for nearly three hours on Saturday. Ms Burton lambasted the newly elected Socialist Party TD for Dublin South West over his involvement in the event, which she said descended into abusive taunts and missiles being hurled at gardaí. Speaking on RTÉ’s Marian Finucane Show, Ms Burton rejected claims by Mr Murphy it had been a peaceful demonstration. She recounted how objects such as eggs and water bottles were thrown. The Labour leader was attending a graduation ceremony at the Cosán centre but was prevented from leaving by a group of several hundred demonstrators who surrounded her ministerial car. Video released yesterday also showed Ms Burton being hit by a water balloon on her way in. The Garda riot squad attended the scene and Ms Burton was eventually able to leave. She described how demonstrators were ‘rocking the car, banging on the window, on the doors and

the roof... trying basically to turn it over ultimately.’ She also alleged ‘anti-women’ comments and ‘homophobic’ abuse were used. Referring to Mr Murphy, she said: ‘He was standing at the back with a loudhailer. If that’s his idea of a peaceful protest, I would not like to see that norm being set.’ Mr Murphy insisted the demonstration was organised not by him but by local residents. He said it was peaceful and claims protesters tried to overturnt he car were untrue. He instead labelled gardaí ‘out of control’, saying he was ‘covered in bruises’ after gardaí forcibly removed him. Claims by Ms Burton of intimidation and violence were untrue, Mr Murphy insisted – a tactic used to ‘divide protesters’. He admitted eggs were thrown by ‘young local lads’, which he had asked them to stop.

In the magazine, published today, she said: ‘Karl has been a huge support, we’re really good friends. He was there for the birth and he has offered to adopt her and be her dad too. He has given her his name, which is lovely, so she will be the same as the other kids.’ Ferguson said she kept a brave face on amid the turmoil of her personal life. ‘on the outside everyone must have thought everything was rosy at home. Yet more Love/Hate speculation…

Tough time: Ferguson

THERE is no guarantee of a sixth season of Love/Hate, RTÉ has said. There was much rejoicing yesterday as comments from commissioning editor Jane Gogan that a sixth series is ‘currently in Adios: Nidge development’ were taken to mean that the show would return. However, an RTÉ spokeswoman last

night said ‘a development deal is in place for series six’ but added that it would ‘only go ahead if everyone is happy it’s of the same standard of the previous series of the show’. Meanwhile, speaking to the Sunday Independent, writer Stuart Carolan said he thinks Love/Hate in its ‘current incarnation’ is over. He added, however, that he would ‘love to keep writing for [Love/Hate actors] in different ways’, prompting speculation of a spin-off series.

Irish Rail chief executive David Franks said he believes the company needs a further €100million per year to avoid bankruptcy or a major decline in services. This is on top of the €125million state funding it receives.

RENTs are now more expensive than they were last year in every county in Ireland, the latest Daft report says. And while the annual inflation of rent has slowed in Dublin for the first time in five years, the report reveals a 14 per cent increase in prices since the end of 2013. The Department of Social Protection has received more than 16,000 anonymous tipoffs from members of the public this year regarding suspected cases of social welfare fraud. A dedicated phone line and website facility is provided by the department for individuals to submit anonymous reports of suspected abuses by social welfare claimants. So far this year, 16,359 tip-offs have been received from members of the public, triggering investigations into cases of suspected fraud. There has been a substantial increase in the number of such reports since the 2008 crash.

GARDAÍ have appealed for information after a man in his 20s died following an assault in an industrial estate. Officers were called to a unit on O’Casey Avenue in the Park West estate near Ballyfermot in Dublin at about 4am yesterday. It’s understood a party was going on in the area at the time. They found the man with severe injuries. He was transferred by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead. market. In this month alone, it is estimated that there were fewer than 5,400 homes available to rent nationwide – the lowest since May 2007. The number of properties listed for lease in the capital has fallen from 47,000 at the beginning of 2011 to less than 27,000 three years later. Commenting on the latest data, Ronan Lyons, economist and author of the report, said: ‘In many ways, the lack of available properties to rent is more concerning than the high rental rates, although clearly the two phenomena are inextricably linked. ‘The only silver lining is the fact that this quarter was the first time in five years that rent inflation in the capital eased somewhat.’ He added: ‘Even if an easing in Dublin inflation continues and stops

the affordability crisis from worsening, it does nothing to change the availability crisis.’ Bob Jordan, chief executive officer at the housing charity Threshold, said that it was ‘crisis time’ for low income families. He said while the average rent in Dublin was up 14 per cent, the reality is people in areas of high demand are suffering a lot more. He said: ‘While we welcome the announcement in the Budget of more social housing, even if the builders go on site in the morning there will be a two to three year lag for construction to get going. ‘What really needs to happen now is an increase in rent supplement and rental control – we continue to call for rent certainty’.

Irish Water ‘can’t take charges from wages’ IT Is understood Irish Water will not be allowed to deduct charges from wages or social welfare payments as part of changes to the water strategy to be announced next week. With the Government keen to resolve the issues surrounding the controversial charge, Irish Water is to be stripped of its power to collect PPs numbers to recoup outstanding water bills.

Instead, the sunday Times reports, the Department of social Protection will be responsible for the personal data. There had been a public backlash over the proposal with many opposing it for privacy reasons. As part of the new plan, parents will not have to provide their children’s PPs numbers as part of the scheme. Meanwhile, The Irish Times reported over the weekend that

the charge is to be simplified to just two rates – a single adult household and a household with two or more adults. When the €100 universal allowance is taken into account, households should be paying less than €200, regardless of size, it said. separately, south Dublin County Council said a water outage in the Jobstown area was ‘unrelated’ to saturday’s protest.

Jihadi John behind latest video killing

ISLAMIC State terrorist Jihadi John has beheaded a fifth Westerner – and he warned more ‘slaughter’ was to come, this time on the streets of Britain and America. The masked British killer announced the execution of US aid worker Peter Kassig (right) in a new video released yesterday. He also explicitly warned British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama that Britons and Americans would be butchered in their own country. The latest beheading followed the similar killings of US journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and British aid workers David Haines and Alan Henning. The video not only showed 26-yearold Mr Kassig’s severed head lying at his killer’s feet but also the beheading of ten captured Syrian soldiers. ‘Jihadi John’ can be heard directly addressing Mr Obama, saying: ‘Today

Mr Cameron said yesterday: ‘These beheadings show once again what a depraved organisation this is. This underlines the deplorable depths to which these terrorists are prepared to go – savagely murdering a compassionate man.’ British Muslims also condemned the latest atrocities, describing Mr Kassig’s murder as ‘an affront to Islam’.

by LUKE HOLOHAN COLIN FARRELL has thrown his support behind gay marriage and called on Ireland to vote ‘Yes’ to equality. In a column in yesterday’s Sunday World, the Irish actor wrote about the difficulties his older brother Eamon faced over his sexuality. ‘I think I found out my brother wasn’t grovelling in heterosexual mud like most boys our age when I was around 12... I just knew my brother liked men and, I repeat, it didn’t seem unnatural to me,’ the star said. Despite homophobic abuse, he says his brother was always proud of who he was. ‘Even when other were casting him out with fists and ridicule and the laughter of pure loathsome derision, he maintained an integrity and dignity that flew in the face of the cruelty that befell him,’ he wrote. In the piece, he wonders where the people who meted out beatings are now. ‘Maybe some of them have found peace and would rather forget their own part of a painful past. Maybe they’re sitting on bar stools and talking about “birds and faggots” and why one’s the cure and the other the disease.’

Farrell: ‘We have moral necessity to vote Yes’ Ahead of a referendum in May, Farrell opines that a ‘Yes’ vote is about ‘fairness’ and ‘inclusion’. ‘It’s about giving our lesbian and gay sisters and brothers back Supporter: Farrell a right that should never have been stolen from them in the first place. They had to travel a little farther than down the aisle to make their vows, though, to Canada, where their marriage was celebrated,’ he said. Calling on people to make history and ‘lead by example’ by voting for same-sex unions, he said it was ‘insane’ gay people still have to leave home soil to realise marital dreams.

Bird flu alert leads to poultry blockade

But wife Carla won’t be happy NICOLAS SARKOZY has said he will repeal France’s gay marriage law as he bids to be re-elected as president. The 59-year-old confirmed he would abolish Socialist party legislation which allows same-sex unions. The controversial decision comes despite his wife, former model Carla Bruni, supporting the right of homosexuals to marry and adopt children. Mr Sarkozy (pictured) came under pressure on the issue during a debate in Paris on Saturday between the three candidates hoping to lead the conservative UMP party into the 2017 presidential election. He said the same-sex marriage law passed last year, which also legalised gay adoption, ‘should be written from the

Repeal!’, and Mr Sarkozy replied: ‘If you prefer that I say repeal the law, it comes down to the same thing.’ Although there has been opposition to President François Hollande’s liberal policies, a poll published on Saturday showed 68 per cent of French people were in favour of gay marriage, and 53 per cent supported gay adoption. Speaking last year, Ms Bruni said: ‘I’m rather in favour because I have a lot of friends in this situation and I see nothing unstable or perverse in families with gay parents. My husband is opposed for reasons linked to his political vocation.’

AMSTERDAM: The discovery of a strain of bird flu which can infect humans has led to a nationwide ban on the transport of poultry. The ‘highly pathogenic’ unnamed variant is dangerous for all birds and fatal for chickens. It was found at a battery farm with 150,000 hens in the village of Hekendorp. The three-day ban, imposed yesterday, includes hunting and the transport of all poultry products. Farms near the site of the outbreak will have to endure an extended 30-day block.

stars mourn man behind knight Rider

HOLLYWOOD was in mourning yesterday after the death of Knight Rider creator Glen A Larson. David Hasselhoff, who starred in the cult 1980s show, was among those who paid tribute to the 77-year-old after he succumbed to oesophageal cancer. ‘Condolences to Glen Larson’s family. Friend/Creator of Knight Rider. Had 7 tv series at one time! Without him there’d be no KItt & Michael,’ he tweeted. Larson was a prolific producer of an array of tv hits including Battlestar Galactica, Magnum, PI, Quincy ME, and the Fall Guy. His shows dominated the televisual landscape in the 1970s and 1980s, earning him three Emmy nominations, a place on the 1979 Grammy shortlist and a star on the Hollywood

Walk of Fame in 1985. Battlestar Galactica actor Richard Hatch said: ‘He had been working with Universal on producing a new Galactica movie based on the original. ‘He was one of a kind, a very smart and resourceful producer who, like Quinn Martin, had several shows running at the same time. ‘He had a great sense of humour and loved entertaining, hosting parties, film nights and get-togethers frequently at his home.’ Larson was also a talented singer and composer, gaining three gold discs with vocal group the Four Preps and penning many of his show’s theme tunes. He is survived by his wife Jeannie Pledger and nine children.

Bird flu case confirmed at chicken farm The Dutch government has banned the transport of poultry and eggs throughout the country after confirming an outbreak of bird flu at a chicken farm. The Ministry for economic Affairs said the outbreak is deadly to poultry and can also be transmitted to humans, though spokesman Jan van Diepen said the exact strain of bird flu has not yet been established. All 150,000 chickens at the farm in hekendorp, 50km south of Amsterdam, are being Alert: Chickens slaughtered. It is not clear how the farm became infected. As well as halting the movement of poultry, other birds and eggs nationwide for 72 hours, the government is imposing other restrictions, including banning the transport of byproducts such as poultry manure and hay that have been used in poultry farms.

Dark days: Anjelica huston recalls 1970s arrest in her autobiography picture: splash news

HoLLyWood actress anjelica Huston has revealed details about the day she caught director roman Polanski with a 13-year-old girl at jack nicholson’s home. Polanski, director of rosemary’s Baby and chinatown, had allegedly drugged and raped teenager Samantha Geimer in a scandal that threw the spotlight onto Hollywood’s seedy underbelly. He denied rape but admitted unlawful sexual intercourse, but fled to France hours before he was due to be sentenced fearing he would be imprisoned. In extracts from her autobiography, Huston recounts the moment in 1977 when she returned home to find Polanksi with the teen. She said she spotted the director’s jacket and cameras in the kitchen and called out looking for him. ‘a short while later, roman and a girl came around the corner, he introduced me to her and said they had been taking pictures.’ Huston, 63, who was going out with nicholson at the time, said she did not give the encounter a second thought until detectives raided her home the next day. She said: ‘They followed me upstairs and I showed them some grass in a drawer. at that point they went through my bag, where they found a gram of cocaine. That seemed enough evidence for them. roman and I were bundled into the back of two separate police cars. We were arrested.’ anjelica Huston’s book ‘Watch Me – a Memoir’ is out this week.

New Jack City: Kayvan Novak is working on a TV comedy series based on Julian Assange

Assange ‘vacation’ is good for a laugh Fonejacker star kayvan novak is starring in a new comedy inspired by WikiLeaks founder julian assange’s stay in the ecuadorian embassy. The BBc4 show, called asylum, is described as ‘a satirical comedy about a government whistleblower and a millionaire internet entrepreneur trapped together in a London embassy’. It was dreamt up by novak and his Fonejacker producer Tom Thostrup and is written by newcomers Peter Bowden and Thom Phipps. assange has been in the South american country’s central London embassy for more than two years after taking refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden where he faces sex-related allegations. He has said he believes he will be extradited to the US if he travels to Sweden. The comedy is one of a string of shows created to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna carta which was one of the first attempts to limit the powers of the monarchy and develop a functioning legal system and parliamentary democracy. The Taking Liberties season includes a day of debate on the 750th anniversary of england’s first parliament, a fly-on-the-wall documentary by Michael cockerell filmed inside the House of commons, and a series on the struggle to win votes for women, presented by amanda Vickery.

But you might choke on the canapés to learn that 80million bacteria are transferred during a ten-second kiss. According to new romance-killing research, the amount of bacteria in saliva rises three-fold after an intimate kiss. The Dutch study also found that partners who kiss each other at least nine times a day share similar communities of oral bacteria. ‘Intimate kissing involving full tongue contact and saliva exchange appears to be a courtship behaviour unique to humans,’ said the report’s lead author, Remco Kort, of the Netherlands Organi-

It is shaped by genetics, diet and age – and those with whom we interact. Mr Kort added: ‘We wanted to find out the extent to which partners share oral microbiota – and the more a couple kiss, the more similar they are.’

Busy lives see us sleep less WE OFTEN complain there aren’t enough hours in the day – and now it seems we’re missing out on sleep to keep up with our busy lives. Adults are getting 17-and-a-half fewer nights of sleep a year than a decade ago, a study has revealed. Seven in ten sacrifice snooze in a bid to complete all the tasks on their todo list, while more than eight in ten wake early to check emails and prepare for the day ahead. And many wear their lack of sleep

as a badge of honour, the Premier Inn survey found. One in three workers discuss with colleagues how many hours they’ve got in – while three in five 25- to 34-year-olds admit to competing about how little dozing they’ve done. Meanwhile, one in four employees exaggerates how early they rise in an effort to impress their boss. ‘It seems our way of coping with considerably less sleep is to compete about it with our colleagues,’ said a spokesman.

dark. As is he. He pushed it a bit on set, pushed it to the limit, but the director hauled him back. I can’t give you any examples – that would become actionable.

Does anything irritate you about the festive season? No,

I love it all. We have everyone to stay with us. We have 15 people in the house. Our extended families spend a lot of time together and Christmas is a good excuse to do that. We dress the dogs up – we’ve got Christmas collars for them. We used to put them in santa suits but they looked really p****d off so we stopped doing that.

What do you enjoy about doing the wildlife shows you work on? Meeting the animals

FOO FIGHTERS

CALVIN HARRIS

sONIc HIGHWAys (rOsWeLL/ cOLuMbIA) ★★★★✩

MOTION (DecONsTrucTION/sONy) ★★★✩✩

W

We can’t blame Harris for sticking with a formula that’s made him the world’s highest earning DJ and pop’s most successful current producer. It’s just that his sonic tropes – the grating foghorn synths and the meatheaded rave breakdowns – become tiresome over the course of an album, while some guests (hello, Big Sean) can induce nausea. However, there’s some pop gold here, with guests Haim, Ellie Goulding, Gwen Stefani and All About She acquitting themselves particularly well. And amid the sugar-laden rave candy it’s Ecstasy – a drum-free, ambient ballad featuring synth-pop duo Hurts – that serves as a much-needed palate cleanser. John Lewis

hen any band that’s been in the game for 20 years reveals that their latest record is concept-driven, the automatic reaction is an anxious wince. It usually signals a creative block; lacking inspiration and not wanting to repeat themselves, they apply some new process or abstract theme in the hope that it will charge them up and push them forward. But the concept behind Foo Fighters’ eighth studio LP isn’t alien or arbitrary – it’s as natural a fit as your hand in your favourite winter glove. Sonic highways is part music travelogue, part rowdy love letter to the sounds of singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Grohl’s youth. Its eight tracks were recorded in eight different cities across the US, with the odd local guest (including Cheap Trick guitarist Rick nielsen and exmember of the eagles, Joe Walsh), and its release here coincides with the BBC screening of an eightl: Foo y episode hBO ia c ffi o It’s t to pla documentary , s are se Fighter astle, May 30 series of the Slane C he first of two same name. t t a – 2015 ed concerts Running at suspect owed Meath less than 45 ll a the h ue next minutes, the ven r album is an summe exhilarating, turbo-charged rampage through the Foos’ heartland of punk, melodic alt metal, post-grunge and 1970s classic rock, with a couple of flirtations with psychedelia. highlights are hard to pick but the liquid power pop of What Did I Do/God As My Witness and the louring fury of Outside shine especially bright. The LP is robbed of a fifth star by I Am A River, the bludgeoning, epic closer built for beery bellowing in fields, that features strings – the worst of heavy rock crimes. But after delivering consistently well for 20 years, it’s hard to begrudge the Foos seven minutes of self-indulgence.

CHERYL

ONLy HuMAN (POLyDOr) ★★★✩✩ The pint-sized X Factor judge’s fourth solo album opens with a lengthy quote from hippy mystic Alan Watts: ‘What would you do with your life if money was no object?’ he asks. Cheryl, it would appear, has chosen to spend some of her €30million fortune hiring an international cast of second-division producers and songwriters in a quest for pop perfection. There are plenty of duds here but the Beyoncé-ish drum stomp of Crazy Stupid Love, the Latin-house rumblings of It’s About Time and the throbbing Euro house of I Don’t Care suggest that at least some of this money was well spent. JL

ALSOOUT... THE VOYEURS RHUBARB RHUBARB ★★★★✩ If their 2013 debut saw Charlie Boyer’s hipsters revisiting post-punk New York circa 1978, here they leap through four decades of pop history: psych rock (The Smiling Loon), glam metal (Train To Minsk) and krautrock (Pete The Pugilist). But it’s the reverb-drenched drum sound that transforms every pastiche into a thing of majesty. JL PINK FLOYD THE ENDLESS RIVER ★★✩✩✩ In which the offcuts from Floyd’s 1994 LP The Division Bell are glued into a vaguely coherent whole. There’s one decent vocal (Louder Than Words) and some pleasing interplay between David Gilmour’s weightless guitar and the late Rick Wright’s ponderous keyboards but even these are the vestigial memories of a once great band. JL ALEX G DSU ★★★★✩ He’s only 21, but DSU is the fifth LP from Philadelphian student Alex Giannascoli. It’s an irresistibly idiosyncratic set of home-recorded songs, whose roots are in slacker pop, lo-fi grunge, classic rock and psychedelia, but they sound hazy and dislocated. Every single track charms but the wonkily funky Promise is a particular winner. SO’C

seventh heaven: Adrian crowley

Rich and poetic album is a feast for the senses AdrIAn Crowley sOMe bLue MOrNING (Chemikal Underground)

★★★★✩

As the days shorten and the temperatures plummet, there is perhaps no surer companion than a new Adrian Crowley album. Laden with evocative imagery and teeming with sullen atmospherics, the seventh

release from the enigmatic Galwegian is one to lose yourself in – the aural equivalent of a good book by the fire. As ever, the most immediate thing here is Crowley’s voice: a deep, rich croon which resonates above a base of gently plucked guitars and prominent strings. He may be only in his mid-forties but comparisons to Leonard Cohen’s wonderfully-weathered baritone are now obvious.

From the declarative strides of the opening title track to the lovely closing lilts of Golden Palominos, Crowley excels at setting scenes. Throughout, he ruminates on life in distinctive ways, delivering introspective, often selfdeprecating yarns that are deep-in-thought but never ponderous. This deeply poetic album is littered with memorable turns-of-phrase that will have you scrambling for a highlighter and the lyrics booklet. Bryan O’Hanlon

Her new husband, Jean-Bernard FernandezVersini, recently won a substantial pay-out from a gossip magazine, complaining it had invaded his privacy. Are there any complications from being one of the most famous women in the country when your husband is publicity-shy? ‘Well, it would be contradictory for me to sit here talking about him when he’s taken such measures to be private,’ Cheryl says. ‘But people have no right to write about someone just because I’m in a relationship with them. They can write about my music and what I’m wearing. They can’t write about someone else’s life – that’s irrelevant. The laws here are a bit crazy when it comes to that. The French have different laws.’

residency on the X Factor in 2008. After a three-year break from her talent show judging duties, following a well-publicised falling out with simon Cowell and her departure from the Us version of the show in 2011, she has made a triumphant return this series. A recent performance of current single I Don’t Care on the programme helped propel it to no.1 – despite uproar over her outfit (referred to by some as ‘looking like loo roll’) and whether she was miming (the performance was actually pre-recorded before it went out). topping the charts again made Cheryl the only British woman to have notched up five solo no.1 singles, an accolade that perhaps could be credited to her ethos and the theme of the new album – not worrying about things. ‘We stress, worry and over analyse so much in our lives – and I’ve been through enough to know your life can change tomorrow,’ she says, perhaps referring to her brush with death when she contracted malaria on a trip to tanzania in 2010. ‘there’s lots of confusion among young people who buy my records about what they want to do with their lives. I want to send the message just to live it – stop worrying and, if you have a passion, go for it.’ Cheryl reckons the media has led young people to spend too much time focusing on the superficial. such as? ‘What size someone’s booty is. What size someone’s boobs are.’ to redress the balance, she’d give the boot to anyone who said they were doing the X Factor to become famous at the audition rounds. ‘And there’d be guys saying, “I’m just doing this to get

I’d stopped caring. I guess I had a lot to deal with. I came back re-inspired and wanted to make a hopeful record.’ Has she found returning to the world of showbiz a frustrating experience? Cheryl replies that she doesn’t read gossip magazines but is aware of a couple of stories that have recently appeared about her – one saying she’s pregnant, another saying she never wants children. ‘I don’t find it frustrating. not any more,’ she says. ‘not 12 years in. Although I feel it’s outrageous that someone sitting in an office can get a couple of pictures and make up a story to go along with it.’ It’s a surprise to learn that Cheryl’s former Girls Aloud bandmate nicola roberts has co-written four songs on the album. ‘she’s underrated,’ Cheryl says. ‘she’s There’s lots of confusion very artistic. When among young people who she visits art buy my records about what galleries the pieces they want to do with their lives. she loves are I want to send the message just abstract. the clothes she wears to live it – stop worrying are sometimes a bit and, if you have a passion, wacky. the way she wack go for it thinks, the connections she makes lyrically in the songs, are interesting. she has a very creative way of thinking.’ Perhaps the most unusual track is Live Life now, a spoken-word song in which Cheryl quotes the works of self-help guru Alan Watts. she explains: ‘People said, “this is either genius or it’s going to go over peoples’ heads.” I’m at the stage in my career where it doesn’t matter if it goes over peoples’ heads. It was just a creative moment I wanted to put out there.’ the message of the song is to live with passion and balance. Has she found it herself? ‘I think so. there are still wobbles. that’s life – especially with what I do, but if you really want it, you find a way.’

1. Rosemary’s Baby

Lifetime, 10pm

The trend for turning classic movies (Fargo, Sleepy Hollow) into TV series continues, with Roman Polanski’s horror masterwork given a modern makeover. Oscarnominated director Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa) is at the helm as Zoe Saldana takes the Mia Farrow role of Rosemary, a woman carrying the spawn of the devil. So, not one to watch if you’re pregnant.

2. I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

UTV and 3e, 9pm So, who are we loving and who are loathing so far? Last time out, the highlight at the outset was watching Joey Essex stick all kinds of everything down his neck and on his body, but there doesn’t appear to be an obvious victim this time round. One thought – could they put the names on screen so we can remember who some of them actually are?

3. Toast Of London

C4, 10.50pm You could take a bath in the rich fruitiness of Matt Berry’s voluptuous diction, so much so that sometimes we’re distracted from what he’s actually saying. But when we do focus on this actor-about-town sitcom there are some genuine crackup moments, not least an audition to be the shouty announcer on University Challenge.

4. Today’s Film: The Hunger Games (2012)

Sky 1, 8pm For all their bickering and simmering resentments, you can’t deny that the extended Dunphy-Pritchett clan spend more time together than most, er, modern families. Who’s coming with me, besides Flipper here?

And other rip-roaring

kiss-oFFs The temptation to let loose a parting shot in a resignation letter or leaving speech has proved too much for some, as Paul Dietrich discovers

S

OMETIMES you’ve just got to go. Whether it’s your patience that cracks or events that overtake you, you just can’t stay any longer. You’ve had it. You’re done for. You quit. All that’s left before you walk out of the door is the resignation letter or speech. The chance to set things straight, cover your tracks or deliver a well-executed kick to the unmentionables. In his exhaustive new book, Matt Potter has collected some bravura examples of those who have done just that – both historic and forgotten. Whether delivered by politicians, writers or everyday people, those included in F**k You And Goodbye exhibit a rage, wit or breathtaking chutzpah that will leave you silently applauding or, maybe, looking to the door yourself. Here’s a choice sample. ■ In 2001, one-time Chelsea and Leeds FC chairman Ken Bates resigned from the Wembley Stadium redevelopment project with the line: ‘Even Jesus suffered only one Pontius Pilate – I had a whole team of them.’ ■ William Faulkner, on leaving his job as postmaster

for the University of Mississippi to become a writer in 1924: ‘As long as I live under the capitalist system, I expect to have my life influenced by the demands of moneyed people. But I will be damned if I propose to be at the beck and call of every itinerant scoundrel who has two cents to invest in a postage stamp.’ ■ International Monetary Fund staffer Davidson L Budhoo quit in 1988, fearing that rather than alleviating poverty, as was its duty, the organisation was secretly trying to convert all nations to capitalism. He wrote: ‘I hope to wash my hands of… the blood of millions of poor and starving people. The blood runs in rivers. It dries up too; it cakes all over me; sometimes I do not feel that there is enough soap in the whole world to cleanse me of the things I did in your name.’ ■ Perhaps anticipating what lay ahead for him, George W Bush quit the Texas Air National Guard in 1968. His reason? ‘Inadequate time to fulfil possible future commitments.’

■ Roseanne producer Jeff Harris quit the popular US TV show after an alleged scuffle with the husband of its star, Roseanne Barr. He took out a full-page ad in Variety magazine that included this zinger: ‘I have chosen not to return to the show. I’m off: Ken Bates and Instead, my wife and a young George W Bush I have decided to

Rant: Office goldfish in hand, Tom Cruise’s Jerry Maguire stuns colleagues with his ballistic leaving speech share a vacation in the relative peace and quiet of Beirut.’ ■ Journalist Mark Schlueb left the Akron Beacon Journal in 2001, fearing he was for the chop in another round of redundancies. To the CEO of its publisher Knight Ridder, Tony Ridder, he wrote: ‘I don’t regret coming here, even though I’ve been laid off now. My only regret is that you haven’t come to visit. I would have loved to p*ss on your shoes.’ ■ In 2011, a store-buyer for Toronto’s Whole Foods organic supermarket quit, writing: ‘My experience here was like an increasingly sped up fall down a really long hill. That got rockier with every metre. And eventually just really spiky… with fire and acid and Nickelback music.’ ■ Geoffrey Howe resigned from Margaret Thatcher’s government over her opposition to monetary union with Europe. In his statement to the House of Commons on November mber 13, 1990, he said: ‘[Serving ving the prime minister’s government ment in Europe] is rather likee sending ur opening batsmen to the your crease only for or them to find, the moment the first balls are bowled, that their bats have been broken beforee the game by the team captain.’ ■ In 2007, an employee of a multinational accountancy firm in Dublin tendered his resignation thus: ‘A job opportunity like this comes along only once in a lifetime. Meaning: if I had to work here again in this

Jesus: Feared Liberian dictator Charles Taylor

lifetime, I would sooner kill myself.’ ■ Welsh politician and founder of the NHS Aneurin Bevan resigned from the Labour Cabinet in 1951 over plans to fund the Korean War with NHS prescription charges. In what many will consider prophecy, he told the House of Commons: ‘There is only one hope for mankind and that hope still remains in this little island. It is from here that we must tell the world where to go and how to go there but we must not follow behind the anarchy of American competitive capitalism, which is unable to restrain itself at all.’ ■ Having been sentenced to 50 years in prison for charges ranging from terror to murder and a campaign of mass rape, Charles Taylor displayed incomparable cheek when resigning as president of Liberia in 2003. ‘I see myself as during the days when Jesus was taken before the High Priest Caiaphas. And you know, Jesus was without sin. And Caiaphas looked at him and said: “Well, it may be expedient that you y should die.” And now, because Jesus died, we are saved save today. I want to be the sacrificial lamb. lamb I am the whipping boy.’ boy ■ We end on a coarser note, but b no less clever cleve for that. In his final leader column for the Daily Express after it had been taken tak over by Richard Desmond, the first letter of each sentence in Stephen Pollard’s Pollard’ column spelled out: ‘F*** you Desmond.’ Desmond.

I’ll keep myself in my own little room and have a little chat with myself and come out and win next week [at the World Tour Championship]. ‘It’s a disappointing outcome. I think hats off to a great final round, and obviously he [Koepka] has played some superb golf. The damage was done on Saturday. That, for me, is really disappointing. Robbie still a massive player for us, says Roy by pAuRic MORgAn Roy Keane has insisted Robbie Keane still has a significant role to play for the Republic of Ireland despite being dropped for the first time in 13 years. The 34-year-old La Galaxy striker headed back to the US on Saturday after being released from the squad a day after being used only as a substitute in Ireland’s 1-0 euro 2016 qualifier defeat in Scotland. It was the first time the Dubliner, who will begin preparations for next Sunday’s MLS play-offs showdown with Seattle Sounders on his return, has been left out of the team for a competitive match when fit since a clash with estonia in 2001. However, assistant manager Keane (right), a former Ireland team-mate, was adamant that the nation’s record capholder and goalscorer remains a key member of Martin o’neill’s squad. He said: ‘Robbie Keane is massive for this team, absolutely massive. everyone keeps saying he was disappointed – of course he was. Tell me any player who is going to be left out of a big game who is not going to be disappointed. That’s what you expect from Robbie. ‘But he is brilliant for the group and brilliant for the team. The Three lions travel north of the border for the first time since 1999 tomorrow, when international football’s oldest rivals meet for the 112th time. The occasion may only be a friendly but the atmosphere inside celtic Park will be anything but. The Glasgow roar is something Welbeck is looking forward to, with the arsenal forward confident england will flourish rather than wilt in the hothouse. ‘Obviously it is only a friendly but we want to win every single game,’ he said. ‘We can’t go in thinking we are going to do anything else than that. It is going to be a great atmosphere. I just can’t wait to get out there and taste it.’

fessional as I have come across and he will be disappointed, of course. But there are other players who were left out.’ The frontman, who took his Irish tally to 65 goals with a hat-trick against Gibraltar last month, had only 12 minutes in which to try to make an impression as he won his 138th cap at Celtic Park, and his frustration was clear afterwards. He told reporters he needed to play as part of an attacking partnership and that he was not suited to a lone striking role, admitting he was ‘no niall Quinn’. asked about that statement, Roy Keane, ane, who also played alongside Quinn and later accepted his offer of employment as Sunderland manager, said simply: ‘He’s a lot better than niall Quinn.’ as the younger man headed back across the atlantic, the rest of the squad – barring Darron Gibson, who has returned to everton for treatment on a minor knee injury – were licking their wounds and starting to turn their attention to tomorrow night’s friendly against the US in Dublin. Ireland were ultimately undone by a fine Shaun Maloney finish in Glasgow, which condemned them to their first Group D defeat and left them locked in a three-way battle with the Scots and world champions Germany for second place behind leaders Poland. They have been criticised for their direct approach against Gordon Strachan’s men, which failed to yield the number of opportunities for which they might have hoped in front of goal.

the qualifiers go into abeyance until next March when group minnows Gibraltar, without a goal or a point in four games, visit hampden Park. asked if scotland could enjoy the game against the auld Enemy at Parkhead better knowing that three vital Euro points had been secured, the 26-year-old Derby striker said: ‘i think so. the pressure is off a little bit in that game. hopefully we

Unsettled Pod ‘is not finished yet’ FOrMer Germany manager rudi Voller has backed lukas Podolski to rediscover his best form. The forward is struggling for first-team football at arsenal, and Germany coach Joachim low admits the situation is jeopardising his international future. Voller said: ‘you mustn’t write Poldi off. He’s not very old, at 29. Of course it’s an advantage for a player’s self-confidence when he is playing regularly, though.’ Speaking after the Germans’ 4-0 win over Gibraltar, Podolski said: ‘I’d rather show arsenal what I am capable of but this chance is not being given to me.’

FOrMer Uk sports minister Sir Hugh robertson has claimed Fifa ran a ‘Wild West’ bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World cups. robertson was part of england’s bid to host the 2018 event, which was awarded to russia, while Qatar were given the next tournament in 2022. last week, Qatar were cleared of any wrongdoing by a Fifa report but Michael Garcia, who investigated the corruption claims, immediately appealed against the conclusions. robertson said: ‘I asked the question when I became sports minister about what we were and were not allowed to do, and one of [the england 2018 bid team] said, and I quote exactly: “There are no rules, it is a Wild West of a bidding process”.’

Ireland coasted to a six-try victory over Georgia in a dublin clash marred by an unpunished stamp to dominic ryan’s face. The hosts were left incensed by flanker Viktor Kolelishvili bringing his boot down on back-rower ryan’s face but captain eoin reddan’s complaints went unheeded by referee JP doyle. ryan somehow escaped injury in a scrappy first-half, before Felix Jones claimed a brace and dave Kilcoyne, richardt Strauss, Simon Zebo and Stuart Olding all crossed, with Giorgi nemsadze responding for Georgia. leinster scrum-half reddan was waved away despite telling referee doyle ‘I have a very serious question’ after ryan received the boot to the face. doyle responded by claiming ‘I can’t listen to that,’ effectively rejecting reddan’s request for a Television Match Official (TMO) review. referee Wayne Barnes called for a review following a request from South africa captain Jean de Villiers that led to the Springboks’ decisive penalty in 27-25 victory over the all Blacks last month. Here though, doyle was unmoved, but Kolelishvili can expect to be cited for his reckless, if unintentional act. Ireland will learn little from their routine victory in truth, with boss Joe Schmidt having made 13 changes from the side that saw off South africa 29-15 a week earlier. australia arrive next weekend, with a raft of senior stars all expected to return. The hosts wasted a number of clear-cut chances in a tryless first-half, with Georgia dominating early set-piece exchanges. Full-back Merab Kvirikashvili dragged an early shot at goal wide for the visitors, before Ian Madigan posted three penalties amid Ireland wasting territory and possession. Ireland should have scored following Kilcoyne’s fine galloping break, and also when darren Cave linked with reddan and ryan.

by DAnnY HOgAn Craig Gilroy spilled Cave’s wide pass to leave another chance begging, before Georgia scrum-half Giorgi Begadze went in the sin-bin for killing the ball. Ireland quickly broke their try duck after the restart, Kilcoyne driving home for his first Test score. Schmidt’s side racked up three more wasted chances to add to first-half frustrations, before Strauss capped a regulation driving maul to double the try count. The usual replacements brought rodney ah You into the fray, with Mike ross withdrawn as Ireland eyed next week’s australia clash. Connacht’s ah You threw a forward pass then conceded a quick penalty in an inauspicious arrival, allowing Georgia a foothold. Then from a penalty lineout lock nemsadze ghosted through flimsy defence to claim a try for the visitors. Just when Ireland were expecting to burst the floodgates, they found themselves under the cosh. Zebo ran in Ireland’s third score after a scrum deep in Georgia’s 22, following a yellow card for number eight dimitri Basilaia. lasha Malaguradze took a bang to the head in the build-up to Zebo’s try, receiving lengthy treatment before being stretchered away. Jones finished a smart Ireland move, before capping a field-length break launched by a smart turnover from debutant replacement robin Copeland. replacement centre Olding then glossed the scoreline further late on as the hosts completed their routine and expected victory. While Ireland negotiated things simply enough, Schmidt knows a challenge of an entirely different calibre awaits next weekend.

‘Ref acted correctly,’ says Schmidt of Ryan stamp Joe Schmidt has exonerated referee JP doyle from any blame over Georgia flanker Viktor Kolelisvhili’s unpunished stamp on debutant dominic Ryan’s face. Kolelisvhili is expected to receive a citing after stamping on Leinster back-rower Ryan’s face during ireland’s 49-7 win over the Lelos in dublin yesterday. Referee doyle waved away ireland captain eoin Reddan’s requests for a television match official (tmo) review, saying ‘i can’t listen to that’ during the six-try victory. ireland boss Schmidt (below) backed doyle for not referring the incident, suggesting tmo Jim Yuille should have alerted the referee to potential foul play. ‘i think the protocol is that if there is suspected foul play the tmo can intervene, he can let the referee know and then the referee can review it,’ said Schmidt. ‘obviously the incident had passed, and i think by the time eoin spoke to the referee the game had moved on a little bit, and he heard nothing from the tmo. ‘So according to the protocol i think he acted correctly. ‘there’s not really much else that JP doyle could have done. ‘that’s just the way it works. ‘it’s something that i know is being talked about a fair bit: they may change those protocols at some stage. ‘currently his (doyle’s) hands were tied a little bit. he didn’t see it himself personally, Luke Pearce on the touchline didn’t see it. ‘therefore if there was an

incident then that has to be dealt with by the tmo pretty much in close proximity in time, otherwise once the game goes on it’s pretty hard to go a long way back. ‘it didn’t look great at the end of it, but i didn’t see how it occurred. ‘Rugby is a game where things can happen. ‘it’s one of those things we’ll have a look at and i don’t think we’ll be the only ones. ‘But for me i’m pretty keen just to move on from it and leave it on the pitch.’ Leinster scrum-half Reddan, captaining for the first time, also refused to lay any criticism at referee doyle, but admitted he believes world rugby chiefs may tinker with the tmo rules. Reddan said he believes the international Rugby Board (iRB) are examining whether to hand teams a number of tmo review requests per match. ‘dominic, his eye was sore, he just asked me to ask the ref to have a look at it,’ said Reddan. ‘i asked the ref, he said he wasn’t in a position to do that, so... ‘i think the powers that be are on top of it and they are talking about it. ‘if there’s something very, very bad there maybe the assistant referee should step in, and maybe the tmo can look at it himself. Georgia’s Kiwi boss milton haig conceded that Kolelisvhili will now in all probability face disciplinary action. ‘i know Viktor and he certainly wouldn’t be doing anything like that intentionally,’ he said.

RAcing Jockey Ruby Walsh described legendary trainer and former rider Dessie Hughes as an ‘absolute gentleman’ following his death at 71. Hughes enjoyed huge success in both spheres, riding to win the Champion Hurdle in 1979 and also saddling Hardy Eustace to victory in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2004 and 2005. ‘I suppose he was one of the last old-school Irish jockeys-cometrainers,’ Walsh said. ‘Dessie will be a sad loss to everybody. Roy not Keane to discuss hotel tussle

Roy Keane drew a veil of silence over the incident which threatened to distract the Republic of Ireland ahead of their euro 2016 qualifier in Scotland as he met the media yesterday. Martin o’neill’s assistant declined to discuss the furore which engulfed the camp on Wednesday last week after gardaí were called to the team hotel in Portmarnock following an alleged altercation with another man. Speaking to the media at the same venue for the first time since the incident, Keane’s response when asked if he was prepared to discuss what happened, was: ‘no, I’m not.’ Wearing the same frown he adopted when confronted on the sideline at Celtic Park by match referee Milorad Mazic during Friday night’s feisty 1-0 Group D defeat in Glasgow, he was

similarly taciturn when asked if the publicity had proved a distraction. He said: ‘no.’ although gardaí attended – the Football association of Ireland later insisted at Keane’s request – no arrest was made nor complaint received. The 43-year-old – the centre of attention in the build-up to last month’s qualifiers against Gibraltar and Germany after the release of his updated autobiography – has captured public imagination with his partnership with o’neill. However, he insisted the pair’s position in the limelight does not dictate where they can and cannot go. He said: ‘no. We go into Malahide and have a coffee, it’s fine. We were out last night for a meal, it was fine,’ before adding with a wry smile: ‘We’re not one Direction.’

Easy-peasy-ashvili Fresh-faced team unlocks Georgia by DAnny HOgAn DaviD Foley enjoyed a dream debut for ireland as he was named man of the match in a 49-7 victory over Georgia in Dublin, but the Munster lock believes the challenges are only just beginning. after a scrappy first half which saw ireland take a 9-0 lead at the break, Felix Jones claimed a brace and Dave Kilcoyne, Richardt Strauss, Simon Zebo and Stuart olding all crossed, with Giorgi Nemsadze responding for Georgia. Foley was one of 13 changes to the side that beat South africa and took his chance in style. ‘i suppose i’ve been dreaming about this since i was a young kid and you never know if you’ll get the opportunity. But i won’t be getting carried away with myself and the team won’t be getting carried away with themselves. We’ve got a massive task next week against australia,’ he said. ireland had been limited by mistakes in the first half, but were more clinical in the second. The slow start did not surprise coach Joe Schmidt given the number of changes made, but he was pleased with the way the players responded in the second half. ‘any team that makes 13 changes can be a little bit incongruent in putting things together and we were a little bit static in the first half, but we kept the structure and we knew the ruck penalties they were accumulating were perhaps an opportunity for us,’ said the head coach.
