CHILDREN of working mothers are more likely to be overweight or obese, according to a new study. Researchers found that kids whose mothers work full time are more prone to putting on weight because they don’t get enough sleep. In the study, published in the journal Sleep Medicine, every hour of extra sleep above the average was associated with a nearly 7 per cent lower weight. The researchers followed 247 mother-child pairs – of which two-thirds of the mothers were employed full time – for a year, calculating the children’s body mass index at the beginning

Fewer than one in five of the youngsters in the US study were getting the recommended 11 to 12 hours’ sleep a night, while the average night’s sleep was 9.6 hours. Janet Liechty, a professor of medicine at the University of Illinois and one of the study’s authors, said: ‘We think that it might be the more hours that mothers are working, the less time they have, and there may be some trade-off going on: Do I spend quality time with my child or do we get to bed early?’ The study follows recent findings from health experts that Ireland’s children are amongst the fattest in Europe.

an MP from northern Ireland has received a death threat after poking fun at the Irish language. Democratic Unionist (DUP) east Derry MP Gregory Campbell made comments which Sinn Féin said were disrespectful to the language. he also rejected calls for a law protecting it. a DUP spokesman said: ‘Police contacted him and made him aware of a serious threat to his life.’ Party leader Peter Robinson defended remarks made by his party colleague at Saturday’s DUP conference. Mr Campbell told delegates that the DUP would treat Sinn Féin’s ‘entire wish list’ as no more than toilet paper. he said that included calls for an Irish language act.
by MicHAEL McHugH Sinn Féin and the staunchly-unionist DUP are the two largest parties in the powersharing administration at Stormont. at the conference, Mr Campbell also referred to comments he made in the assembly earlier in the month.
‘The mockery reflects badly on this house’ he began an address with ‘Curry my yoghurt can coca coalyer’, in imitation of the Irish sentence ‘go raibh maith agat, Ceann Comhairle’ which translates as ‘thank you, Speaker’. he was banned from addressing the assembly for a day for failing to apologise.
Sinn Féin assemblyman and Speaker Mitchel McLaughlin told the chamber: ‘The spirit of mockery was blatant and reflects badly upon this house and the deputy speakers.’ On Saturday, Mr Campbell started his speech at the conference by saying it was always good to start the day with a healthy breakfast. he then brought out a tub of yoghurt and said: ‘So I got some yoghurt today. ‘and I’m looking forward to lunch, because they tell me there’s some curry there.’ Mr Campbell has been an MP since 2001. he is a former culture minister in the powersharing ministerial executive at Stormont and has been a trenchant critic of Sinn Féin.
Anglo case requires ‘bigger jury panel’ The STaTe requires an enlarged jury panel to deal with the case of ex-anglo executive William Mcateer and three co-accused on charges of conspiring to mislead investors about the value of the bank’s deposit books. The four men’s attendance was excused at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday morning after a trial date was previously set for January 11, 2016. Mr Mcateer, 63, who has an address at Greenrath, Tipperary town, will stand trial alongside three other anglo and Irish Life and Permanent officials. They are: John Bowe, 50, from Glasnevin, Dublin, who had been head of capital markets at anglo Irish Bank; Denis Casey, 54, from Raheny, Dublin, who was chief
Anglo: executives face court case executive of Irish Life and Permanent (IL&P) until 2009; and Peter Fitzpatrick, 61, from Malahide, Dublin, who had been IL&P’s former director of finance. They have been charged with conspiring to mislead investors by trans-
ferring €7.2billion to make the bank appear more valuable between March and September 2008. Mr Bowe and Mr Mcateer also face one additional charge that they falsified accounts. The case was listed for mention before Judge Mary ellen Ring to monitor the progress of disclosure. Counsel for the prosecution, Diana Stuart BL, said the first stage of disclosure is almost complete and requested a new date for mention to allow for the process to be monitored. Ms Stuart said the State would also like to make an application for an enlarged jury panel to deal with the trial and said she was putting the court service on notice of this fact. Judge Ring adjourned the case until July 1.

NI ‘torture’ case ‘should be reopened’ Amnesty International has demanded the reopening of a landmark case against Britain over the alleged use of torture in northern Ireland during the troubles. Ireland took the case of the so-called Hooded men to the european Court of Human Rights in 1971, alleging a breach of the european Convention on Human Rights. they were 14 Catholic men interned that year – detained indefinitely without trial – who claimed they were sub-
It is claimed the UK withheld evidence jected to a number of torture methods. these included: Hooding, stress positions, white noise, sleep deprivation and deprivation of food and water, along with beatings and death threats. they were hooded and flown by helicopter to a secret location, thought to be a British army camp at Ballykelly, outside Derry.
Google troll case settled
GOOGLE has settled a case in the UK High Court with a British businessman who said he was the victim of ‘extreme internet trolling’. Daniel Hegglin had wanted Google to take steps to ensure that abusive material posted about him did not appear in search results. A lawyer for Mr Hegglin told the judge the dispute had been settled. A Google lawyer said Mr Hegglin’s case was exceptional.
by cON DOHERTy A documentary by RtÉ in June revealed fresh evidence that the British government authorised the ‘deep interrogation’ tactics at the highest levels. It included a 1977 letter from then home secretary merlyn Rees to then prime minister James Callaghan in which he states his view that the decision to use ‘methods of torture in northern Ireland in 1971/72 was taken by ministers, in particular Lord Carrington, then secretary for defence’. Amnesty International said the documents show the UK government withheld crucial evidence from the european Court of Human Rights during the original hearing and senior government ministers sanctioned the use of torture, which they had denied. the evidence could have led to a different finding by the court, it said. In the original case against Britain, the court found the Hooded men were subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment but ruled it was not torture.

Olly Murs, 30, was runner-up on the 2009 series of The X Factor. He has had numerous hit singles and recently collaborated with Paul Weller
What can we expect from your new album? A fun, feel-
good record with some balls behind it. It’s a roller coaster of emotions. It’s got more of a grown-up sound but still keeps that cheekiness and fun to it. You grow as an artist and take things up to another level.
You hadn’t written songs before the first album, right?
No, I hadn’t. I was learning my trade and having input into the sessions but, as the years have gone on, I’ve got more involved. There’s a couple on the album I didn’t write, one by Ryan Tedder and the one with Demi Lovato. It doesn’t bother me as long as I’ve got quality songs.
Was it intimidating to write with Paul Weller? Massively,
and I had to take away the fact I’m a big fan. I wanted it to be amazing and a really good song. He wrote the song originally, sent it to me and I wanted to get my personality on it a bit more, so I rewrote the chorus and it was perfect. He loves
it. It was a great experience.
How did that collaboration happen? I was at a Paolo Nutini
gig. He turned up. I got a picture with him and he asked if I had an album coming up. He offered to send me a song. I heard it, loved it, wanted to put my stamp on it and Bob’s your uncle. We got on really well and had a laugh together. Paul saw I’m not the typical X Factor artist – people think we’re all puppets and get given songs to sing. He heard my music, heard me do a version of Town Called Malice on tour, saw I’m a proper artist and wanted to get involved.
Has anyone else surprised you? Susan Boyle came
to a gig. John Bishop came to one, so did Joe Hart. I don’t know, you’ll have to ask people. It’s always nice to get support from industry people.
How are things going in the US? I toured with One
Direction over there. Troublemaker did well for me in the US and we want to go again. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. You’ve got to go and put the effort in. I don’t want to force anything. I’ll go over, work hard and we’ll see.
You’ve said some artists make you feel you’re ‘not part of the cool gang’. When did it last happen? It’s not like
in the school playground when people come up to you and call you names but you can tell from how certain artists are with you when you’re in certain situations. It’s just one of those things. I love The X Factor, I love the show and obviously other people don’t but it’s up to them. That stigma is wearing off, definitely. It’s pretty much gone now but it’s always going to be around.
What misconceptions are there of you? What you see is
what you get with me. I’m an upbeat guy. I’m just a regular,
“ It wasn’t gold they were giving out, but to me that sleeping bag meant so much. ” Each day frightening numbers of people, families and children are now falling into homelessness. The numbers sleeping rough in the Dublin region alone has increased by over 20% in the last year. Homelessness can happen to anyone and as more and more people turn to their services for help, Dublin Simon Community are appealing for your support. Your generosity will ensure that people like Tracey will not have to spend this winter, or any other winter, desperately seeking somewhere safe to spend the night. “ As recently as last winter, from October right up to April, I would have slept out most nights, at least four nights out of every week. You stick with people that are like you so you feel like you belong. You’re all escaping something, but no matter how bad you are there’s always someone worse. “ I wasn’t able to handle the death of my mother and had to ask my family to look after my children. Then when my partner passed away a couple of years ago, I ran… I just couldn’t go back to the house. That’s how I ended up homeless. “ Living on the streets, you don’t know from one end of the day to the other where you’re going to end up. A lot of times there were no beds available so you would have to ring up to get a sleeping bag. It wasn’t gold they were giving out, but to me that sleeping bag meant so much. You then need to rummage around, looking for cardboard to lie on for the night. “ If I was lucky enough to have any change, I would get on the buses or the trains, just to get in out of the cold
“
Paul Weller offered to send me a song. I heard it, loved it and wanted to put my stamp on it normal guy who is lucky enough to sing for a living.
Who have you learned the most from? Steve Robson and
Claude Kelly, who I’ve written my singles with. I get on with them really well. Robbie Williams has given me good advice because he’s been through so much. He told me to be myself, don’t try to be someone I’m not and to write songs that are personal to me.
You’ve got your own TV special coming up. Who will be appearing with you? I
can’t tell you but I’m really excited about it. It’s a dream come true. It’ll be a right laugh.
What’s been your proudest achievement so far? Going to
the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro. I got two tickets because Sony were big partners in the World Cup this year. It was a great experience and something I won’t forget. Andrew Williams

and space out my day. I’ve gone all over the country, just to get a bit of heat and be able to use the bathroom. ” “ One day my social worker got in touch with the Simon Community and put my name forward for a place in their treatment and recovery services. I was nervous going in and it was a challenge every day, but that made me want to do it more. I was saying to myself “ Yes, I’m going to do this. ” “ I’ve always loved sport and football. When I came into Simon I started doing classes with Health and Wellbeing. Not just sport but everything that goes with it, sleep, nutrition and relaxation. I’m loving it! It’s just doing so much for me, mentally, physically and emotionally. Now people aren’t afraid to sit beside me. Now I look like anybody on that bus or that train. It means the world. “ Simon services need to be seen to be appreciated, to see what they are doing for people. The Simon Community is a lifeline. In some cases, and in my own, it’s a matter of life and death. ”
With the encouragement and care of Simon, Tracey has now moved on from homelessness. Because of the support of people like you, she is living in our residential aftercare service and has recently started a Pre-Employment Course. She is currently the star of the Simon Football Team and is looking forward to what the future has to bring. A gift of whatever you can afford will help people like Tracey this winter. In total, the money exchange service estimates there is more than €110million in different notes and coinage lying in households around the country. Some 45 per cent said they intended to hold on to it until their next travels, with only one in five indicating they will convert the money back to euro. Simon Phillips, head of retail for No.1 Currency in Ireland, said: ‘After every trip abroad, most of us end up with a few £10 notes or US dollars in the bottom of our bags or at the back of our wallets. ‘However, with more and more people travelling outside of the eurozone to the US, UK, Canada and Australia, all of this currency adds up to a

Drain baby’s mother ‘faces 25 years jail’ A MOTHER who allegedly tried to kill her newborn son by dumping him in a drain faces 25 years behind bars. Saifale Nai, 30, has been charged with attempted murder in Australia after the boy was found in the 2.5m storm drain, where he had survived for five days. The baby was wrapped in a hospital blanket, and police in Sydney used medical records to trace Ms Nai. Officers say the boy, born on Monday last week, was squeezed through the narrow opening of the motorway drain when he was a day old. He was found on Sunday by cyclist David Otte, who heard his cries. Ms Nai, who lives in the Quakers Hill suburb, will remain in police custody until a court hearing on Friday.
Her son is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. He is malnourished and dehydrated but is expected to recover. Gynaecologist Andrew Pesce, a former president of the Australian Medical Association, said the ordeal could leave him with long-term problems such as brain damage: ‘I would have thought he wouldn’t have been able to survive for much longer if he didn’t start getting fed.’ But he said healthy newborns had reserves to cope with malnutrition, and often lost 10 per cent of their birth weight because mothers could take a few days to produce sufficient milk. Last night, police revealed it took six men to lift a 200kg concrete lid covering the drain to rescue the child.

Losing the rag over our use of ‘drag’ and pride in sports feats
I
Action is now required, and by that I do not mean a sit-down protest or trapping people in cars. The only action is to exercise your constitutional right and cast your vote at the ballot box – it is coming faster than you think and much faster than Fine Gael and Labour realise. Killian
n response to the front page ‘Hunt for gunman in drag after raid’ headline story, a man ‘in a dress and wig’ does not mean he’s in drag. It’s just means he (stupidly) thinks dressing up will make it harder for him to get caught. Drag is an art form, that both men and women can use as a form of expression. It takes yonkers to perfect and balls to do it. I admire drag queens for what that do. They are amazing. In the words of rupaul, don’t be afraid to use all the colours in the crayon box. Keep on keepin’ on, hunties! Marissa

Nerve cells synthesised for pain-relief studies
ScientiStS have created ‘pain in a dish’ by converting skin cells into sensitive neurons. the lab-generated nerve cells respond to a range of pain stimulation, including physical injury, inflammation and chemotherapy and could be used to develop better painrelieving drugs. A team at Harvard Medical School used proteins that control gene activity to transform mouse and human skin cells directly into pain-sensing neurons. the findings are reported in the journal nature neuroscience.

Homosexuality link to social bonding
Homosexual behaviour may have evolved to promote social bonding in humans, according to new uK research. Dr Diana Fleischman, of the university of Portsmouth, says the results of a preliminary study provide the first evidence that our need to bond with others increases our openness to homosexual behaviour. she examined the relationship between progesterone and sexual attitudes to explore the role homosexual behaviour may have
played in human evolution. In research published in the journal archives of sexual Behaviour, they found heterosexual women with higher levels of progesterone more likely to be open to engaging in sexual behaviour with other women. similarly, when heterosexual men are subtly reminded of the importance of having male allies, they report more positive attitudes toward engaging in sexual behaviour with other men. Dr Fleischman said this pattern
was particularly obvious in men with high levels of progesterone, known to contribute to social bonds. It is one of the main hormones responsible for caring or friendly behaviour and levels rise when people interact closely. Women’s levels peak after ovulation when the chance of pregnancy is reduced. Dr Fleischman said: ‘The results of our study are compelling because using two very different methods, they arrived at the same conclusion.’

hot stuff: dragon age ● Dragon Age: Inquisition (360/PS3/XO/ PS4/PC) is the third, and most epic, roleplayer in the fantasy series so far. Filled with political intrigue and monster-mashing in equal measure, it’s a fitting ending to a storyline started five years ago. ● Filling the gap before Dead Island 2 next year, Escape Dead Island (360/PS3/PC) is a cartoonified zombie adventure with a style all of its own that still promises plenty of scares. ● Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog has found an unlikely home on Nintendo consoles. His latest adventures, Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric (Wii U) and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS), return him to his platform game roots. ● Having been released recently on the Xbox 360 and PS3, WWE 2K15 on XO and PS4 means we’re now treated to Lycra-clad musclemen in the greatest resolution yet. ● Watch Dogs (Wii U) was released on other consoles months ago but Nintendo owners won’t mind finally getting their hands on one of the most interesting openworld games out there. ● The PS Vita has seen a sales boost since adding the ability to play PS4 games remotely but Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (PSV) could draw even more interested eyes to the portable console – turn to p56 for our guide to the best handhelds and gaming tablets around this Christmas.

lthough Far Cry 4 has to tackle yet another Call of Duty release and halo: the Master Chief Collection in the Christmas bun-fight, its impact deserves to be immediate. the open world that’s yours to explore is a fictional himalayan region called Kyrat where you go around shooting enemies – and honey badgers – to liberate an enslaved populace from a despotic ruler. As Ajay ghale, you’ve arrived in your mum’s homeland to scatter her ashes but very soon (in one of the most thrilling game openings ever) discover a second agenda to her final wishes. this leads you to join and consequently become the most pivotal member of rebel fighters the golden Path.
ThE BIg RELEASE far cry 4 (18) XO/PS4/360/PS3/PC Countless missions and side missions await as you take on your ‘uncle’, Pagan Min, for control of the region. Far Cry 4 offers an impressive selection of mission types, co-op gameplay and one of the most rounded villains of any video game. Where it truly excels, though, is in its range of options. You can wander off the beaten path and ignore the storyline for hours on end, be it hunting indigenous wildlife for their skins, meat or as bait, or even picking flowers to be made into medicines and the like. In addition, as almost all vehicles are available to be driven, so there’s an incentive for exploration too. Missions themselves can be played pretty much any way you

grand ThefT auTo V (18) XO/PS4 You would think Grand Theft Auto V for new consoles would essentially be the same game released last year for the Xbox 360 and PS3 with a nice lick of paint. After all, it broke video game records and won awards. Well, it has had a mighty facelift in graphical presentation, but the big deal here is that you can now play the whole thing from a firstperson perspective. This changes the action so radically that even those who have completed the original release will feel the
benefit. It’s a masterstroke because while the first GTA V was a superb lesson in interactivity, this version now allows people to drive cars, planes and such from the cockpit – a revelation. Car chases are more tangible when looking at them through your own eyes, while shoot-outs are more heart-racing. Then, of course, you have the incredible plot structure of a GTA game and the cinematic presentation as before. Very, very clever indeed. RH

winger Adam AshleyCooper believes Saturday’s Test against England will give the Wallabies a strong taste of what’s to come at the World Cup next year. Australia take on Stuart Lancaster’s side at Twickenham ahead of their Pool A match-up at the same venue next October. England and Australia will also have to battle it out with Wales, Fiji and Uruguay for qualification to the knock-out stages. ‘It’s a tough pool and you can certainly treat Saturday’s match as a warm-up game for that World Cup match,’ Ashley-Cooper (pictured) said. ‘And off the back of two disappointing weeks, we certainly want to respond and we’ll be looking to do that.’

ing talent due to return, Sexton is excited about what’s coming down the line 11 months before the World Cup. Connacht’s 21-year-old centre is one of the younger players who has made a breakthrough against South Africa and Australia and he made a big impression on the out-half. ‘(robbie Henshaw) is coming on in leaps and bounds. He would say himself he’s got so much more improvement,’ said
Sexton. ‘He’s so young, only 21. It’s frightening to think what he could achieve if he keeps improving the way he is.’ Another player who got a chance to shine in the win over Georgia was Ulster centre Stuart Olding, another who Sexton is tipping for a big future. ‘He will be a great option going forward. He seems to have that second five-eights as they call it in the southern hemisphere. He has that potential. He showed some great things in training and I’m really looking forward to working with him,’ said the star. In his second and final year with racing Metro, Sexton also insisted he was in much better condition this term compared to his struggles last year. ‘I had played 14 games in 13 weeks with racing last year. I got an injury against Australia and played injured against new Zealand; whereas this year I played five [club games] having broken my jaw. After the in-fighting, feuding, intrigue and fear of failure, in the end Lewis Hamilton was simply...
unstoppable
It’s a rIvalry that, at times, has been turbulent but on sunday night lewis Hamilton and Nico rosberg finally put their differences to rest and hugged each other after a hard-fought season. the German was gracious in defeat, acknowledging it was lewis, his friend since childhood, who had been the driver of the year. With 11 victories from 19 races, Hamilton was the worthiest winner and the sense of relief his Mercedes did not let him down was palpable in the pits. that is not to say he didn’t feel the pressure, though. He admitted after the race he had slept badly the night before, waking at 5am and going for a run to clear his head. His family made a surprise visit to watch their boy become a double world champion. lewis had not invited
them for fear it would be distracting, but as it turned out it capped off the perfect day. Power unit problems scuppered rosberg’s title hopes but ultimately the championship was seized by Hamilton before the first corner. His start from second on the grid – Nico having beaten him to pole for the 11th time – was, in his own words ‘absolutely phenomenal’. He roared past rosberg and disappeared into the distance. ‘It felt like the best start I’ve ever had.’ the history books will suggest the title fight wasn’t as tense as it was in reality. Hamilton scored 67 more points than his team-mate.

Despite the visitors enjoying the lion’s share of possession, they couldn’t carve out any chances until 20 minutes from time, Villa keeper Brad Guzan punching away Dusan Tadic’s rasping free-kick. We need to win to stay in the competition, so the lads will be fighting for their lives to do that.’

Bray legend wins 17th title
Focus is on improving for Six Nations
by DANNy HOgAN
THERE’S plenty more to come, insisted Johnny Sexton just days after Ireland completed a Guinness Series clean sweep by beating Australia. Coupled to their win over South Africa, confidence is high that the Six Nations title holders can kick on and defend their title by winning a Grand Slam. Yesterday, Ireland outhalf Sexton claimed that the plan will be for Ireland to unleash more attacking play in 2015. ‘Yeah, we didn’t show a whole lot which will be good for when we come to the Six Nations when we can use what
we had planned to use and we’ll take that positive,’ said Sexton, who added that Ireland coach Joe Schmidt will review their wins like losses. ‘Look, it’s great we’re talking about all of these deficiencies in our play after three wins. It’s a nice place to be and a good thing that we’re doing it. We’d probably be talking about the same things if we’d have lost, it’s what we’ll do when we meet to review it. We’ll pretend like we did lose and take everything as it was. We know we’ve plenty to improve on, but we’ll work on that and will improve by the Six Nations.’

Taylor beat Azerbaijan’s yana Allekseeva by unanimous decision to match the achievement of India’s Mary Kom, who won five titles between 2002 and 2010. ‘It’s an absolute privilege to equal that record of five world titles, I thank God for another great victory,’ said Taylor. Taylor has now won 17 major titles – one Olympic, five World, six European and five European Union – since 2005.

Ror-ing back: Australian Open
McIlroy back where glory trail began RORy McIlROy will look to successfully defend the title which kickstarted his resurgence at this week’s Australian Open in Sydney. Given the world No.1’s brilliant performances this year, which brought major victories in the Open and US PGA Championship and two other wins, it is hard to believe just how bad 2013 was in comparison. McIlroy struggled to adapt to his new equipment, fell out with his management company and walked off the course during his defence of the Honda Classic, not to mention labelling his own play ‘brain dead’ when missing the cut in the Open. The 25-year-old had to wait until December to win his first tournament of 2013 at Royal Sydney, denying home
‘I came through this year stronger’ favourite Adam Scott the triple crown after the Masters champion had won the Australian PGA and Australian Masters. Twelve months on McIlroy returns to Sydney – albeit a different golf course – already thinking about completing a career grand slam in the Masters next April and brimming with confidence. ‘This year has been full of ups and downs, mainly ups, which is a great thing,’ said McIlroy, who won the BMW PGA Championship in May just days after calling off his wedding to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. ‘I learned a lot from it and I feel like I came through this year stronger and wiser, and I can go into 2015 in a much better place. I’m happy with the success that I’ve had and I feel like there’s been a lot that I’ve learned this year as well.’
