The findings could help the fight against skin cancer, which can be caused by overexposure to UV light. The report added: ‘Alcohol dependence, nicotine dependence and illicit substance use disorders have been shown to have a heritable component and to be influenced by genetic factors. If tanning dependence is similar to these, a heritable component is likely.’

Springsteen, 65, also impressed as he tackled another U2 classic, with one fan tweeting: ‘Bruce Springsteen just rocked one of my favourite songs ever, Where The Streets Have No Name, with @U2 at #onestep4RED’. Kanye West and Carrie Underwood were also on the bill. Bono was forced to bow out after falling off his bike in Central Park last month. He needed five hours of surgery when he suffered fractures, including to his shoulder blade, and facial injuries.
HIV virus ‘starts to get weaker as sufferers adapt’ HIV is becoming less deadly as patients’ natural immunity develops, a study suggests. The weakening of the virus was ‘an important contribution’ in the fight against its spread, researchers said. Widespread access to antiretroviral drugs was also slowing its progress to Aids. Lead scientist Prof Phillip Goulder, from the University of Oxford, said: ‘HIV adaptation to the most effective immune responses we can make against it comes at a significant cost to its ability to replicate. ‘Anything we can do to increase the pressure on HIV may allow scientists to reduce its destructive power over time.’ More than 2,000 HIV-positive women in South Africa and Botswana took part in the study. Scientists discovered a gene that gives some patients protection against the effects of the virus. In Botswana, where the epidemic has existed a decade longer, the virus had adapted to resist the gene’s immunity, but this reduced its ability to replicate. Researchers also found antiretroviral therapy (ART) on people with a low number of CD4 cells, which protect the body from infection, weakened the virus. Mike Turner, of the Wellcome Trust, which funded the research, said: ‘The widespread use of ART is an important step towards the control of HIV.’ The study was in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.

TAsTEs Of HOME iRisH AbROAD Miss THE MOsT
THIS Christmas, thousands are yearning for their annual ex-pat survival kit, packed to the brim with delicious Irish treats and memories of the Emerald Isle. But what are the most missed foods by Irish emigrants? According to Checkout magazine, the foods most likely to be sent to faraway shores is the holy trinity of Cadbury, Kerrygold and Tayto. Some 64 per cent of people surveyed said they missed the Tayto crisps most. Cadbury’s milk chocolate and Kerrygold butter tied for second place in Irish hearts and minds. A total of 56 per cent of overseas Irish said they pine for the products ‘a lot’. Meanwhile, the Diaspora
Decides study may have settled a long-running debate. When it comes to the preferred cupán tae, Barry’s Tea (49 per cent) pips Lyons Gold Blend (47 per cent) to the post. Denny rashers and sausages also make the list. ‘With the last postal dates before Christmas fast approaching, Tayto crisps, Cadbury’s chocolate and Barry’s Tea are again likely to be popular choices for Irish families posting “tastes of home” to loved ones,’ said Checkout editor Stephen Wynne-Jones. Those living abroad were also asked what products they felt were of a higher quality in Ireland. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a pint of stout scored the highest.

Up TO half of all emergency 999 calls in Dublin are delayed because there is no nearby ambulance, a report has found. An investigation into the service found poor co-operation between the nation’s two main authorities meant paramedics were not getting to patients as quickly as they could. It branded as unsafe the lack of staff in ambulance control centres and hit out at bosses for not recruiting enough paramedics to replace those who had left the service. The 187-page review, carried out by the Health Information and Quality Authority (Hiqa), also flagged concerns about the country’s ageing ambulance fleet.

Dublin Fire Brigade welcomed the report that current governance arrangements between the National Ambulance Service and Dublin Fire Brigade are disjointed, with inadequate
quality assurance and accountability controls,’ he said. ‘As a matter of urgency, both services must act to ensure that there is a fully-integrated ambulance service in the greater Dublin area.’ Under the present system, ambulances in the capital are controlled by the Dublin Fire Brigade, while the rest of the country relies on the National Ambulance Service. Dublin Fire Brigade welcomed the report, saying: ‘The issues raised by the Hiqa review are consistent with concerns previously raised by Dublin Fire Brigade in the best interests of patients and we are pleased to see them reflected in the main recommendations of the review.

Homelessness summit as Church offers shelter EmErgEncy talks on the homelessness crisis sparked by the death of a man sleeping rough across the street from the Dáil will try to find out why things can not be done better, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said. After Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid martin vowed to open up church property in the inner city to rough sleepers, the government said it would host a summit tomorrow involving those fighting homelessness. The gathering of council chiefs, politicians and charities will ‘see how is it that we can not do things better’, mr Kenny told the Dáil.
by bRiAn HuTTOn
Dr martin had earlier called for a public summit in the aftermath of the death of Jonathan corrie, 43, in a doorway on molesworth Street. He was one of several homeless men who sleep rough around the area and some are known to mr Kenny and other TDs as they pass on their way to the Oireachtas. gardaí are not treating the death as suspicious and are awaiting post-mortem results to determine if the cold weather or drug use was a factor. Drug paraphernalia were discovered close to the man’s body. Amid an outcry over the death, Dr martin has ordered staff to offer accommodation for between 30 and 40 people. The shelter will be in a diocesan building in the north inner city. Picket: Teachers in Whitehall
Teachers say more strikes on the cards TEACHING unions have rejected calls by Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan to halt plans for further strikes in the New Year after 27,000 marched against moves to reform the Junior Cert. Ms O’Sullivan insisted she would not back down on plans to have teachers mark their own students’ exams, saying that while she was willing to ‘negotiate on a number of related issues’, teachers assessing their own students ‘must be introduced’. Refusing to rule out further strike action, ASTI general secretary Pat King insisted that as long as the Government maintains the internal assessment requirement, there will be disputes.

in future, potholes will fix themselves Potholes in the roads could be a thing of the past if a futuristic plan to produce self-healing concrete comes to fruition. the concrete would produce bacteria to fill the cracks when the concrete gets damaged. It is one of the innovative schemes outlined in a report on the future of highways by engineering company Arup. the report looks at possible trends up to 2050 and also envisages the replacement of
conventional road surfaces with solar panels that could charge electric vehicles and melt snow. temperature-sensitive paint on the roads could generate giant snowflake-shaped warnings to indicate a drop in temperature and icy conditions. Arup predicts that patterns of ownership will change in the coming years, with commuters more likely to purchase access to a vehicle rather than the vehicle itself.
the numbers cycling and walking are likely to increase and electric cars could become commonplace, with developments in science dramatically improving performance and leading to better navigation systems. the report also suggests that improved communications will make cars more ‘intelligent’ and ‘self-aware’ of traffic levels, speed, weather and potential safety hazards.

Animal rights activists accused Mr Rosolie of harming the snake but he insisted the film was made to help raise awareness of dangers to the habitat of anacondas. ‘I didn’t want to stress [the snake] out too much,’ he said. ‘I wanted to

THE captain of the Costa Concordia said he wanted to ‘kill three birds with one stone’ when steering the ill-fated cruise ship towards the island of Giglio. Francesco Schettino was speaking yesterday at a trial in the Tuscan town of Grosseto, close to where his ship ran aground in January 2012, killing 32 passengers and crew. He said he wanted to give a ‘salute’ to the island to please the ship’s head waiter Antonello Tievoli, whose family came from there, and to impress a friend staying on the island. Mr Schettino also wanted to give passengers a good view of the beauty spot, he added, denying that he also wanted to impress a Moldovan dancer he had brought to the bridge. But Mr Williams suffered a heart attack brought on by excessive heat because the cling film and rubber sheets prevented his body from cooling down. Mr Schettino also denies abandoning ship, ter saying he was thrown into the water. A verdict is expected early next year.

We’re all to blame for homeless death

veryone is all of a sudden shaken into anger with the Government over the death of that poor homeless man on Molesworth Street, another example of hypocrisy in Irish society. If you live or work in Dublin, you walk past homeless people regularly. Instead of screaming ‘what’s the ****ing Government going to do about it?’ (their usual catch-cry for every single problem they see), maybe these ranters should ask themselves why they’ve never stopped to help a homeless person, never bought them a tea and a sandwich in the nearby shop, or dropped unwanted blankets or clothing off with them. Society is the man on the street, not the representatives sitting in the parliament. Clancy Clearview
■ I am somewhat bewildered not one union has reacted to the statement by Michael noonan that the Universal Social Charge is to stay. Introduced in 2011 as a ‘temporary measure’, USC is another example of the taxpayer succumbing to a government lie. By now we are aware the Government has broken every election promise it made and only now are we protesting when they try to add another tax to the already overtaxed nation. But what displeases me most is that not one of our many union leaders has spoken out about noonan’s latest declaration. our unions are the ones that brokered all these deals (Croke Park, Haddington road, etc). The workers have done their part in getting the country out of this mess but now we are being punished again

Dear Wicked Stepmother

As Cinderella toils for her two ugly sisters in this year’s panto at The Helix, her WIckED sTEpMOTHER dishes out advice to our readers I have an uppity ‘classically good looking’ (ugh!) colleague and she’s really cramping my style. How do I win back the attention of the lads? Scarlet You needn’t worry, Scarlet. Classic looks will only garner attention if the beholder has opportunity to show her wares. Your main agenda should be to keep her out of the spotlight where she won’t be noticed. Ensure she’s kept extremely busy. Sweat patches and stale odours can be a real turn-off to any man.
Unless you’re by your goddaughter’s side 24 hours a day, you can’t be sure exactly why her stepsisters are taunting her. They may have legitimate reasons. it’s likely she changed the dynamic within the home on arrival. The girls will find a common ground in time when your goddaughter agrees to submit to the rules within her new confines. Your interference will only cause more disturbance and give her stepsisters further cause to air grievances.

if you weren’t invited you’re obviously not ranked amongst the elite section of society. Therefore under no circumstances should you dare abandon your chores to fulfil your pathetic little whims.
Dear Jane, i suggest you break ties with your current beau. if he’s married to someone else, you gain no advantage. His worldly possessions will go to his next of kin after he shuffles off his mortal coil.
My goddaughter is getting bullied by her stepsisters somethin’ fierce. I want to help, what is there that I can do? Ms Fairy
My fella won’t grow his hair out. He looks angry and dangerous with a skinhead but he really has a sensitive side. Should I put Trish my foot down?
Yes, you should put your foot down – on his head, preferably while wearing six-inch stilettos. He’ll soon wonder about the benefits of hair and the protection that may afford him. no doubt he’ll be content to let it grow out soon enough to cover the lumps and bumps. if he has a sensitive side, all the better. it will take less time to break him and steer him towards your way.
I’ve seen your picture and wondered how you do your Mary face? You look fab! Thank you, mary. it takes a great deal of time and effort to look this good. i find eyebrow shaping to be quite an ordeal so i have my unibrow waxed completely on a daily basis and i’ve had two brows tattooed onto my forehead for the sake of convenience. my beautiful daughters keep me busy fretting about their appearance so that’s a physical workout in itself, and whenever i feel the need to flex my muscles further, i call upon my stepdaughter, Cinderella, and give her a piece of my mind in the form of contact interpretive dance.
I have a single, very eligible, son
who can’t seem to find that lucky girl. Any advice? Involved Mother
may i ask how eligible? For instance, does he hold a title of some description? if so, i would highly recommend either of my two beautiful daughters Concepta or Consumpta. They’re both in their prime and ripe for the picking. if you feel they’re a little too naïve in worldly matters, perhaps he might prefer to taste a more forbidden fruit such as myself... Constant threat: Is America really ‘the land of child abduction’? (picture posed by models)
Two days after welcoming a son into the world, ROss McDOnAgH contemplates the very real threat of child abduction in the US
I
’m in Good Samaritan hospital in Downtown LA, and i’m watching the nurse meticulously check for the umpteenth time whether the serial numbers on my bracelet, my wife’s bracelet and my two-day-old son’s bracelet all match. Once again, she reads the matching number codes aloud three times before finally snipping the LoJack off my boy’s tiny ankle. i can’t remember what security in maternity hospitals is like in ireland (i never had any kids there), but then again, i don’t remember any kids ever being abducted there either. What i do remember from when i was a kid is that America is the land of child abduction – and now that i’m here, that doesn’t seem too far off the mark. The car alarm around little Salvador’s leg ‘must never be tampered with’, the nurse had told me, affixing it to him pretty much as they were detaching him from his
mother. ‘if this is removed, a team of security guards will burst in here in seconds.’ On the way back to our room, the missing for four years was found nurse continues her debriefing like hidden inside his father’s wall. i we’re playing capture the flag. don’t think he’d been there ‘Everybody who enters the whole time, mind your room must have an you, rather the dad iD,’ she insists. just sort of taken ‘Question anyone I wondered was the had custody from the unfamiliar.’ indeed, fear legitimate or just mam, and hid him as each nursing there whenever shift ends, the some mass hysteria authorities came clocker-off always looking. in a lot of the media had comes in and these cases, the introduces whoever cooked up ‘kidnapper’ is one of is taking over. the parents. But there i had always are also those horrible wondered if the childcases where it is not. Just last abduction fear was legitimate year, i remember reading about a case over here or just some mass hysteria in Florida in which a man had offered the media had cooked up once and to buy a woman and her eight-yearhad never really gone away. But it old daughter clothes as they were really does seem to happen quite a browsing in Walmart; he then offered bit. Just this week, a kid who’d been
“
to buy them mcDonald’s, led the girl out of the store and into his van, where he murdered her. in fact, Walmart even invented Code Adam, a procedure for when kids go missing in stores, where exits are shut down immediately and no one is let in or out as soon as the alarm is raised. Adam was actually another little boy who was murdered after being abducted from a Florida mall in 1981 – in the wake of that tragedy, thousands of stores, parks, museums and hospitals have the Code Adam system in place; his father even went on to become the host of America’s most Wanted. How anyone manages to get away with child abduction amazes me. The US government also has an ‘Amber Alert’ system in place, and the first
time i ever came across that, my underwear turned amber. You’re watching TV with the volume low minding your own business, when out of nowhere this screeching, grating alarm blares out of the TV, before a police dispatcher cuts across your programme to give you the model, make, registration number and physical description of an abductor, and his or her abductee. Your phone bleeps and you have the same text message. if you’re driving, electronic road signs have the same read-out. So is child abduction that big a problem here, or is it overhyped? Well if you google ‘Amber Alert’, you’ll see how many states have their own version named after a child who could have been saved had the system been in place. @rossvsross

The young old-timer MARTIN FIGURA
Author emma healey took a big risk writing her debut in the voice of an 80-year-old – but it has paid off, writes Claire Allfree
My desert island reads
E
mma Healey was in her kitchen in her house in Norwich when she heard she’d been shortlisted for the Costa First Novel award. ‘I had been warned in advance to listen in to Front Row that night,’ she says, talking about Radio 4’s nightly culture programme, which announced the shortlists last month. ‘amazing things keep happening one after the other. I have to keep pinching myself.’ It has indeed been an astonishing year for the 29-year-old, which saw the publication of her debut novel, elizabeth Is missing, narrated by maud, an octogenarian experiencing early onset dementia who is convinced her best friend elizabeth has vanished. muddled in with this conviction is the troubled memory of another disappearance: that of maud’s elder sister, Sukey, who vanished in the 1940s when maud was a girl. The book, which beautifully captures the porous, regressive mind of an alzheimer’s sufferer while weaving in a subtle whodunnit, was the subject of a bidding war, received rave reviews on publication and was shortlisted for a National Book award ard – and if all that wasn’tt enough, it has been optioned for TV. It was Healey’s y’s paternal grandmother who gave her the inspiinspi ration for elizabeth. ‘my grandmother said out of nowhere: “my friend is missing”,’ she says. ‘She had been showing signs of senility for some time. my other grandmother was also very ill and it made me think about dementia and old age

CRUSHED, By HoLLy A HARvEy
I really enjoyed this writer’s first novel, Karma, which won a competition to be published. She has a lovely style and sense of humour; a great storyteller. Recently she wrote Crushed, which is available on Kindle. I am going to leave heavy hints to get one of those this Christmas so that then I can have Crushed too.
Ancient mystery: ys ry Emma Healey’s aley book mixes a subtle whodunnit with a senstitive examination of the effects of old age – but she says: ‘I didn’t want it to be bleak’ and what they can mean. I did have a few qualms about writing in the voice of an 80-year-old. I thought, how ho arrogant ant to think I can do this. I’m only in my twenties.’ like novels such as mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and Room by emma Donoghue, elizabeth Is missing depends upon a central protagonist whose world-view is unconventional
and idiosyncratic. In maud’s case it is also unstable and at times highly distressed.
H
ealey spent a long time researching the condition of alzheimer’s – how it affects memory and behaviour patterns, how sufferers often seek refuge in a childhood version of themselves, how it transforms a previously safe, recognisable world into somewhere that’s frightening and strange. ‘I also wanted to write about

how boring life can be for old people and how lonely – although I didn’t want the book to be too bleak,’ she adds hastily. ‘I’m not one for making a reader have to slog. I’m a real believer in books that are a joy to read.’ Healey’s route to writing was fairly circuitous. She ended up completing a creative writing ma but before then worked in an art gallery and studied the arcane-sounding subject of bookbinding at university – something at which she was hilariously bad. ‘you have to be extremely neat to do it,’ she says. ‘all my friends would be showing off pristine finished products and I would have bits of paper stuck in my hair and glue all over the book.’ Not that Healey needs to mourn a lost career in bookbinding. Thanks to the success of elizabeth she has given up her job as a web administrator in Norwich and has bought her own house with her boyfriend. ‘I still can’t believe I don’t have to get on the bus to work every day,’ she says. ‘Instead I can spend my day writing the next book.’

The books are elegantly large and slim, really beautiful, and I feel this would be the start of an excellent collection…
FUNNy GIRL, By NICk HoRNBy
I am a huge fan and if I ever wrote another book even half as good as one of his I could die happy. He writes enormously interesting and entertaining novels with a deceptively easy style and I am so looking forward to this, his new one. Also, in spite of saying I want a Kindle, that’s really just to facilitate reading while I travel. I love to see shelves full of books everywhere in my house and so I will never cease buying them.

The hosts looked as if they would have to settle for a share of the spoils after a frustrating night thanks largely to a faultless display from Rangers goalkeeper Rob Green. However, the visitors’ resistance was finally broken on 78 minutes when Ki’s cross-cum-shot hit the base of the post before bouncing into the net. Routledge doubled the lead five minutes later with a fine finish as he curled the ball home from 20m to wrap up the points for the Swans.

LIVERPOOL recovered from going a goal down at Leicester to record back-to-back Premier League victories for only the second time this season. Goals from Adam Lallana, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson were enough to see off the lowly Foxes, who took the lead thanks to Reds keeper Simon Mignolet’s own-goal. Leicester opened the scoring 22 minutes in when a

volley after the ball fell to him inside the area. Gerrard, restored to the team after being dropped for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Stoke, put the visitors ahead when he calmly passed the ball home when Raheem Sterling’s cross deflected into his path in the 54th minute. Wes Morgan saw red for hauling down Rickie Lambert when the Reds striker was through on goal and Liverpool cashed in on their numerical advantage with seven minutes left. Kasper Schmeichel fumbled a deflected cross into Sterling’s path, who backheeled the ball to Henderson and he slotted it into the net.

‘the post was meant to be anti-racist’ and responded to criticism on Twitter by posting: ‘My Mom is
jewish so all of u shut up please’ But the FA has now given the Italian until 6pm on Friday for his observations and Balotelli, who missed last night’s clash with Leicester through injury, posted an apology on Twitter. ‘The post was meant to be antiracist with humour. I now understand that out of context it may have the opposite effect,’ the
24-year-old tweeted. ‘I used a cartoon done by someone else because it has Super Mario and I thought it was funny and not offensive. Again, I’m sorry.’ Liverpool said they would be speaking to Balotelli. ‘We are aware of the posting which has since been promptly deleted by the player,’ said a spokesman for the club.

Certainly it was better football than when Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic gifted the ball to Robin van Persie, who fed the unmarked Herrera only for the Spaniard to blaze over. United were handed a warning when Bojan Krkic looked certain to score but Marcos Rojo recovered brilliantly to deny the Stoke striker. Bojan played a key role in the 39thminute equaliser. Although his break was halted inside the box, the ball squirmed out for Steven N’Zonzi to fire a brilliant shot into the corner. STEVEN GERRARD fired a timely reminder of his worth to Liverpool as he scored to help secure a 3-1 Premier League win at Leicester. The Reds skipper has finally been offered a new contract by the club, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, and put his side 2-1 up early in the second half with a slide-rule finish. Gerrard’s performance, after being rested against Stoke, came after manager Brendan Rodgers told him he will have to be content with a reduced role. Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson also scored after Simon Mignolet’s own goal had put the Foxes, who later had Wes Morgan sent off, a goal up. Manchester United beat Stoke 2-1 to stay fourth, with West Ham fifth after a 2-1 win at West Brom.

Farewells said to ‘finest ever’ rugby legend RUGBY legends have paid tribute to the one considered the greatest of them all as they joined friends and family of the late Jack Kyle at a special thanksgiving service. Ireland and Lions stars Willie John McBride and Mike Gibson hailed Kyle’s qualities as a player and a man after the emotional event in Belfast. Kyle, who died last week aged 88, was once voted the best rugby player the island ever produced, winning 46 caps for his country and six for the British and Irish Lions, inspiring Ireland to a Five Nations Grand Slam in 1948. The service at Fisherwick Presbyterian Church in Belfast also heard of Kyle’s life and achievements off the pitch – about a man who, after hanging up his boots, eschewed a medical career in the UK to work as a surgeon in Zambia for 30 years. Afterwards, iconic captain of the
1974 Lions McBride said: ‘He was one of the great men. How do you define “gentleman”. ‘I am just proud I had him as a friend’ fly-half was the finest player to ever wear the green shirt. ‘Unfortunately I didn’t see him when he was at his prime but I don’t think there would be many people arguing with that assessment,’ he said. ‘I was with Jack at a dinner when he was named as the best player ever
produced by Ireland and he felt embarrassed by it, he felt humbled by it – but that was the nature of the man.’ A private family funeral was held yesterday morning, with the public paying respects in the afternoon at Fisherwick church. Present day stars Rory Best, Tommy Bowe, Andrew Trimble, Craig Gilroy and Iain Henderson were among those who attended, as was former Ireland and Lions great Syd Millar, Stormont’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness and 1972 Olympic gold medallist Dame Mary Peters. Kyle’s close friend Reverend Colin Morris spoke of his principled stand on racial issues during his time in Zambia, revealing how Kyle refused to associate himself with all-white sports clubs in the post-colonial country despite numerous requests for the endorsement of the famous rugby player.
