Apology: Kim Jong-un
by MeTro herALD sTAff
ON PAGE 10 of yesterday’s edition, we ran a report under the headline ‘North Korea doesn’t deny cyber attack on Sony’. This report suggested that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was behind the cyber attack on Sony Pictures that crippled its computers and leaked unreleased films online, costing the firm millions. We now accept this story was without foundation and wish to apologise to Mr Kim for any distress or embarrassment caused to him. A growing number of web security experts are casting doubt on the theory North Korea was behind the hacking attack, even after Mr Kim warned the US the release of Sony film The Interview – in which Seth Rogen and James Franco play journalists assigned by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader – would be an ‘act of war’. One such cyber-security expert, Lucas Zaichkowsky, said: ‘State-sponsored attackers don’t create cool names for themselves like Guardians of Peace and promote their activity to the public.’ He said the details he had seen point instead to ‘hacktivists’, who break into computers to make a political point. Metro Herald wishes to set the record straight regarding the Sony hacking and to thank Mr Kim for the non-adversarial way in which he dealt with this matter.

Sheeran in top Spot Enjoy the view: Ed played the Victoria’s Secret Show in London this week, along with Hozier, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande getty
ED ShEEran is on top of the world after he became the most-played artist on music-streaming service Spotify globally, beating the likes of Katy Perry and Coldplay. The singer and guitarist, who has extensive Irish family connections, this week passed the million UK sales barrier for his second album x, and was the top act in an analysis of in excess of 7billion hours of listening by 50million users. Sheeran – heard 860million times on the service this year – said: ‘It’s a great thing to be above so many amazing artists who I’d assumed would be streamed more than me.’ The album x – which has been accessed
by LukE HOLOHAn 430million times – is the most-streamed album in the world. Eminem is the second most-played artist internationally while Coldplay are ranked third. Coldplay are also the top group globally, with One Direction in fifth position. Wicklow man hozier also ranks highly in the Spotify charts. The Bray-born singer, who was named as one of the up-and-coming acts of the year, takes the title for the most viral track. his single Take Me To Church, from his self-titled debut album, was released in 2013. The track’s
promotional video quickly spread online and was praised for its equality message for samesex relationships. Meanwhile, the most listenedto track in the world for Spotify users was happy by Pharrell Williams, which has achieved more than 260million plays. Katy Perry was the top female act globally, succeeding rihanna who had held the position for two years but who has now slipped from the top five. a spokeswoman for Spotify said Taylor Swift, who pulled her music from the site last month, would not have featured on the top five lists regardless of her decision.
Journalist asked not to quiz VS girls on feminism A journAlist at tuesday night’s Victoria’s secret catwalk show in Earls Court, london, was apparently asked not to ask the models questions about feminism. According to British newspaper the independent, the request was made by one of the American lingerie firms’ Prs when one of its journalists was interviewing Dutch model romee strijd. While the writer was allowed to ask questions such as ‘do you have a favourite outfit from the show?’ and ‘how does it feel to be a Victoria’s secret model?’, when she posed the questions ‘some critics would say that the show objectifies women – what would you say to that?’ and ‘are you a feminist?’, the Pr allegedly stepped in saying: ‘Can we maybe not ask that question’. the controversy comes just weeks after the company was forced to change a bra campaign featuring the slogan ‘the Perfect “Body”’ after 28,000 people signed a Change.org petition.
U2 reveal tour plans but Dublin dates to come U2 HAVE announced details of their upcoming world tour, but Irish fans will have to wait for details of a confirmed Dublin date. ‘Special’ hometown shows are being planned for the end of next year to benefit the U2-initiated Music Generation project. However, dates have yet to be revealed. The tour will see U2 play more intimate sets indoors for the first
time in a decade. It follows the release of their 13th studio album Songs Of Innocence, which Apple gifted to half a billion iTunes customers to a mixed reaction. It was written with the band looking to return to their roots, which go back more than 30 years. Recently injured frontman Bono said: ‘We are going to try to have a completely different feeling from
night one to night two and have some fun playing with the idea of innocence and experience.’ The band will play 19 cities in 2015 with tickets going on general sale on Monday. The tour will kick off in Vancouver on May 14, taking in a number of North American cities before their first European date in Turin, September 4.
Four London dates have been pencilled in for the O2 from October 25. Fans were this week treated to Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay sin ger Chris Martin filling in for a badly injured Bono at a World Aids Day concert in New York City. Bono is expected to make a full recovery despite needing three plates and 18 screws in his elbow.

McDonald in firing line after her Dáil bombshell
Des O’Malley: Denied allegations
MEMBERS of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) rounded on Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald after she named under Dáil privilege five former ministers as alleged holders of Ansbacher accounts. Referring to names included in a dossier sent to the Public Accounts
by jOAnnE AHERn Committee by a senior civil servant whistleblower, she said: ‘I emphasise these are allegations but they come from a very credible source.’ All five – former Progressive Democrat leader Dessie O’Malley,

former Fianna Fáil TDs Ray McSharry, Gerry Collins and Máire Geoghegan Quinn, and former Fine Gael TD Richie Ryan – have denied having the tax evasion accounts. Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett stated in the Dáil that he is not the ‘S Barrett’ Ms McDonald also named. Labour PAC member Joe Costello described Ms McDonald’s revelations as a ‘stunt’ and said it is ‘damaging to the work of the committee for a member to name people mentioned in the dossier against whom nothing has been proved’. He added: ‘In such circumstances, Sinn Féin should consider whether Ms McDonald is now a suitable person to continue to represent the party on the PAC.’ Another Labour PAC member Robert Dowds said that while he ‘agrees with Deputy McDonald that much more needs to be done to investigate the very serious claims’ and he ‘shares her frustration with the pace of events to date’, yesterday’s move is ‘reckless political grandstanding’. The Public Accounts Committee was told this week that it cannot investigate the whistleblower’s allegations. Speaking on RTÉ News last night,
Named names: McDonald Ms McDonald said her intention was to ‘break the pattern of political obstruction in relation to issues pertaining to tax evasion in relation to Ansbacher accounts’. She added that Dáil privilege is afforded for such circumstances and she does not believe her action was an abuse of that privilege. She denied it was equivalent to Tánaiste Joan Burton’s use of Dáil privilege to raise the issue of paedophilia within the republican movement, over which Sinn Féin has made an official complaint.

Growth doubt sees Dublin slip in global business city ranking
Resigned: The late Jonathan Corrie told the interviewer he had been homeless since he was 18 years old
DUBLIN’S ranking as a top business capital has slipped several places among the world’s most reputable cities. Dublin has been ranked 27th on The City Reptrak index, a drop of seven on last year’s ratings, as its potential for future growth was questioned by the study. The report – compiled by The Reputations Agency and Reputation Institute – found Dublin was strong in areas
such as the beauty of the city. But it performed less well across economic and business attributes such as in potential for growth and the respectability of its leaders. While still categorised as ‘a city with a strong reputation’, and ranked above Berlin and San Francisco, the Capital ‘needs to develop a unique brand’, Niamh Boyle of The Reputations Agency said. She added that ‘identifying
competitive strengths’ and ‘points of difference’ were keys to ‘reputation’ strategy. ‘We need to understand the perceptions of Dublin… as the good reputation of a city strongly correlates with an increase in the support shown towards a city, such as visiting the city, living or working in the city or deciding to invest in the city,’ she said. This year, Vienna was No.1.
A RADIo interview has emerged of the homeless man who died on Molesworth Street, just metres away from Dáil Éireann Jonathan Corrie, who was found dead earlier this week in a doorway, spoke recently about how homelessness had become a ‘way of life’ for him. In the interview given to Dublin City FM reporter Hannah Parkes and reproduced on TheJournal.ie, the 43-year-old said he was reluctant to go into emergency accommodation. Speaking just a few months ago, Jonathan said he had been homeless for most of his life, beginning shortly
after he turned 18-years-old. Although he admitted he had grown used to living rough, he said everyone should be ‘given a chance’ to prove they could move out of homelessness. The 43-year-old said he could only remember having one flat for two days in his entire adult life. Speaking about whether things would improve for him, Mr Corrie said: ‘To get a job, you need a base and you need a good three square meals a day as well, to be honest, and you need some good sleep and you won’t get it on the street so you can’t just grab a job on the street when you’re in a sleeping bag.’

instances of customer abuse, he added. It follows a recent RAI-commissioned survey in which 58 per cent said they felt intimidated by beggers. The RAI said the survey reveals the effect begging is having on the quality of life and on restaurants in the Capital, and called for a more visible Garda presence. Meanwhile, the LVA’s Deirdre Devitt said: ‘Our members understand that this issue cannot be solved overnight but at the least people would like to see more gardaí on the street.’ In 2011, the Criminal Justice Act was amended to target hostile begging. While it does not criminalise it, it allows gardaí to move on or arrest those involved if viewed a public nuisance, intimidating, or conducted by an organised group. However, Dublin Town CEO Richard Guiney criticised the legislation, saying that it ‘isn’t working’. He said: ‘We need to strengthen the hand of the guards against aggressive begging. I don’t believe in sending people to prison, but people engaged in certain persistent anti-social behaviour should be barred from certain streets.’

Call for more anti-begging gardaí in city
DUBLIN business leaders have appealed to the Government to combat ‘aggressive begging’ which they say is prevalent in certain areas of the city. The Restaurant Association of Ireland (RAI), the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA) and Dublin Town business group were all before the Oireachtas Justice Committee yesterday on the matter. Speaking to Metro Herald, RAI chief executive Adrian Cummins said the current situation is out of hand. He added while the group understands the complexities of begging, homelessness and addiction, a balance needs to be struck to ensure the rights of everyone, including residents and visitors to Dublin. He said: ‘The reality is that aggressive begging has intensified over the past 12 months while Garda man power levels in Dublin city centre have slipped back to 2009 levels.’ The issue is not, he said, with people begging passively, but those aggressively asking for money continually. Often restaurant owners have to deal with

We can reach out and A SYSTEM that uses soundwaves to project ‘haptic holograms’ into the air – letting you touch 3D objects with your hands – is poised to bring virtual reality to the physical world. The system, developed by Bristol University, could help doctors examine a lump detected by a CT
scan or allow museum visitors to handle replicas of priceless exhibits. It builds on a previous version which projected 2D outlines of map contours above a screen. Now, high-frequency sound waves emitted by tiny speakers create the sensation of touching an invisible, floating object. When the sound hits the hand, the force of the waves exerts pressure on the skin. Stuart Cupit, technical director at Londonbased design studio Inition, said: ‘Touch is a missing element in virtual interfaces today.’
Super-smart mouse has half a human brain WHAT would Stuart Little think? Super-smart mice have been created with half-human brains. They still have mouse neurons – the ‘thinking’ cells – but they are supported by human glial cells. ‘It’s still a mouse brain,’ said Prof Steve Goldman of the University of Rochester Medical Centre, New York. ‘But all the non-neuronal cells are human.’ Prof Goldman’s team took immature glial cells from donated human foetuses and injected them into mouse pups. The cells developed into
astrocytes – star-shaped glial cells with long tendrils. Within a year, the mouse glial cells had been usurped by the interlopers. ‘We could see the human cells taking over the space,’ said Prof Goldman. ‘It seemed like the mouse cells were fleeing to the margins.’ Astrocytes are vital for conscious thought because their tendrils help to co-ordinate the transmission of electrical impulses. Because human astrocytes are up to 20 times the size of those in mice and carry 100 times as many tendrils,
they can co-ordinate the impulses more effectively. ‘It’s like ramping up the power of your computer,’ said Prof Goldman. Tests showed that the mice with human cells had memories four times better than their normal siblings. ‘These were whopping effects,’ said Prof Goldman. ‘We can say they were statistically and significantly smarter than control mice.’ The idea is not to mimic fiction, but to advance our understanding of human brain diseases by studying them in mice rather than in lab dishes.
Big Apple’s tiny rubbish collectors IN NEW YORK, junk food is a staple – and not just for busy commuters. Armies of ants do a very important job, cleaning up food litter left by messy eaters of hot dogs, cookies and crisps. In fact, ants and other arthropods on Broadway and West Street in Manhattan can remove food litter equivalent to the weight of about 60,000 hot dogs or 600,000 crisps in a year. Elsa Youngsteadt and other researchers at North Carolina State
University in Raleigh placed crisps, cookies and hot dogs at dozens of sites in Manhattan’s parks and on islands of greenery between lanes of traffic. Arthropods removed as much as 59 per cent within a day. More food was eaten at traffic islands than in parks, even though parks were more biodiverse. This may be down to the pavement ant, which lives in big colonies and likes these islands.

Blast them: Leaves cause train delays
Zap leaves on the line with lasers TRAIN companies are testing lasers as a way of clearing leaves from the paths of high-speed trains. Trials to zap slippery foliage were started last month on railways in Holland. The lasers, fitted just in front of the wheel and angled downwards, vaporise residue as the train passes. They also dry the rails to prevent new leaves from piling up, giving the trains better traction and allowing faster acceleration and braking. Using lasers to clear leaves was first proposed by a UK company called LaserThor in 1999. It developed a laser with a temperature of 5,000ºC (9,032ºF) that was strong enough to zap leaves 25,000 times per second. ‘This worked really well in the lab,’ said Network Rail, which racked up 4.5million hours of passenger delays because of leaves last year. However, the operator opted for high-powered water jets because vibrations from moving trains made it hard to keep the laser focused on the rails. The Dutch team has been working on the problem.

AN AMATEUR rugby player whose repeated broken noses left him without a sense of smell sniffed out a gas leak after a boot to the face cured him. Edward Baker (pictured) escaped the reek of changing room mustiness for decades having first suffered a break at 14. Just last year he had surgery to try to correct his affliction – but to no avail. However, in a recent match for English club New Milton III, the 41-year-old was kicked in the nose – and a week later, he was breathing and smelling properly. ‘I’ve broken my nose a number of times. It gradually got worse and worse until I couldn’t breathe through it or smell
A BRAZILIAN model who came second in the country’s ‘Miss BumBum’ contest is in intensive care following complications from surgery to fix a botched bottom-lift operation. Andressa Urach has gone into septic shock following surgery to drain hydrogel used to inflate her thighs and buttocks in the run-up to the competition, doctors said yesterday. The 28-year-old, who once claimed to have had an affair with footballer Christiano Ronaldo, discovered the gel and PMMA used as fillers were leaking in July. ‘The hydrogel was not absorbed by my body and started to harm me,’ she said. She was taken to hospital in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, at the weekend with an advanced infection of the leg and reportedly had two unsuccessful drainage procedures. A friend of Ms Urach said the TV presenter had been unable to exercise for four months. ‘She was always in a lot of pain. She

Fellow Miss BumBum contestant Jessica Lopes said: ‘Everyone is in a state of shock. Andressa and I would go to the plastic surgeon as if we were going shopping.’ Her agent, Cacau Oliver, the contest’s creator, said: ‘We are all praying for her.’

Forget the feeding frenzy that is the Christmas sales rush, KEN ROGAN has found the gift that keeps on giving: teaching someone how to whistle
T
he best things in life are free. It may not feel like that when the high street clobbers us with Oscarcontending movietisements, but it’s true. So this Christmas: teach a boy how to whistle. Loud. With his fingers. he’ll be king of the playground and the envy of his friends and it will stay that way for life. For free. But you have to show him how – otherwise he might grow up thinking (like I did) that some people can just whistle, while others can’t – the same way you thought some people were just cool, and others weren’t, until you realise that a lot of self-defeating effort goes into looking like you just don’t care. This was a big epiphany for me. Life might have dealt me an uncool hand, but I was allowed to shuffle the deck and deal myself another. Plus I understood the game a little better, so when I met new people in college, I ruthlessly stole all my old friends’ jokes until everyone thought I was hilarious. Or bearable. That might seem ‘phoney’ but as the logline to every undercover cop movie ever said: I wasn’t a cop
pretending to be a gangster, I was a loser pretending to be cool – and I was winning! And I’d like to tell you that all of this happened at an impressionable age, but it seems to me that every age I have is impressionable. Which is why, right now, I’m learning how

Day 2, hour 21.45: Absolute corker of a twit-twoo. The word ‘drawers’, once used to describe women’s generous, frilly 1950s knickers, is literally ringing in my head, because that’s the last time the world heard a twit-twoo this primal. I see the world in black and white now. Scratch that – ‘noir’. Women aren’t women – they’re dames. Broads. Sweethearts. Tootses. Knockouts. That might be rabidly sexist, but with great power comes great responsibility, because whistling says a whole lot more about the whistler than the whistled-at. Just Google the six Fermanagh men who competed in a wolf-whistling contest in 2010 in something that was very seriously close to real life Father Ted-like events. And ask not for whom the whistle whistles. Or something. Clearly I’m making an ocean of sense here.

A US MiLiTAry plane which the government denied on four occasions was at Shannon in September and October of this year has been found to have visited the airport on those dates. Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Flanagan had told Dublin north TD Clare Daly on four occasions, in reply to parliamentary questions, that a specific US Hercules C130 she had inquired about was not at Shannon when she claimed it was. Mr Flanagan has now apologised to Ms Daly, while Shannon Airport has apologised to him following what he called an ‘administrative error’. The KC130J Hercules, with the registration 16/8073, is an aerial refuelling aircraft attached to the United States Marine Corps. The plane arrived in Shannon on September 30 and departed the following day. Ms Daly had asked Mr Flanagan to confirm the plane was at Shannon and whether it was involved in refuelling US military aircraft in irish airspace.
Mr Flanagan told her that the Shannon Airport Authority had confirmed to his department that no aircraft with the registration number 16/8073 was at the airport on the dates in question. This week, however, Mr Flanagan corrected his previous statements in relation to the specific aircraft and has apologised. He said: ‘i can confirm to the House that the aircraft identified by Deputy Clare Daly in the four parliamentary questions was in fact granted permission to land at Shannon Airport on September 30.’ ‘i replied to the questions on the basis of information provided by Shannon Airport Authority. Shannon Airport Authority has now informed my department that it has identified an error in its recording.’ The US military’s use of Shannon has long angered peace campaigners. Ms Daly and fellow TD Mick Wallace yesterday said they would contest charges for trespassing at the airport in July in order to ‘inspect’ US military planes there for weapons or illegally held prisoners, something they say the irish government is failing to do.

MEP calls for bank rethink on loan limit
One in ten of us is still out of work More than one in ten people remains out of work despite a modest drop in the rate of unemployment, the latest figures have shown. Last month, there were 352,647 people signing on the Live register, putting the unemployment rate at 10.7 per cent for the month. According to the Central Statistics office (CSo), the rate is down 0.2 per cent on october and represents a fall of 38,860 on the same time last year. Minister for Jobs, enterprise and Innovation richard Bruton said: ‘Many people are not yet feeling the effects, and with unemployment still close to 11 per cent we have a long way to go. However, today’s figures can give people further confidence that if we continue implementing our plan, we can continue to grow the economy, create jobs, reduce unemployment and ultimately create a better country for people to live in.’ The CSo also found that men still represented the majority of those on the Live register.

‘Get your own name,’ Kim Jong-il told the rest of North Korea’s Kim Jong-uns
In nORTH KOREA, there can be only one Kim Jong-un, it seems. A South Korean official has said that Pyongyang forbids its people from using the same name as the young absolute leader. The measure appears meant to bolster a personality cult surrounding Kim, who took over after the death of his dictator father Kim Jong-il in late 2011. Seoul officials have said Pyongyang also banned the use of the names of Kim Jong-il and the country’s founder, Kim Il-sung.
The official said that in 2011, Kim Jong-il ordered those with the same name as his son to get new names and demanded the rejection of birth registrations of newborn babies with the name. Kim Jong-un made his international debut in late 2010 when he was awarded a slew of top political jobs. His father, who reportedly suffered a stroke in 2008, was seen as moving fast to hand over power so his family could rule for a third generation. Kim Jong-il inherited power in
1994 when father Kim Il-sung died. north Korea enforces strict, state-organised public reverence of the Kim family, which serves as the backbone of the family’s authoritarian rule of the impoverished country. All north Koreans are required to wear lapel pins bearing the images of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il and to put the leaders’ portraits up on their walls. Their birthdays are considered the most important holidays in north Korea.

University loses 100 Teacher killed by brains kept in jars attacker in a burka
AMERicA: About 100 brains held by a university have gone missing. The organs, including that of clock tower sniper Charles Whitman, who killed 16 people and wounded 32 others in 1966, were being kept in jars of formaldehyde by the University of Texas for the Austin State Hospital. Prof Lawrence Cormack said students could be ‘swiping them for living rooms or Halloween pranks’.

The woman, who is the mother of 11-year-old twins, was attacked with a sharp tool in a fight with a person wearing a burka on Monday. Col Rashid Borshid said police were looking at motives for the killing of the 37-year-old, but would ‘spare no effort to bring the culprit to justice’.

Revenge: A car bomb wrecked the front of the Iranian ambassador’s residence in Yemen picture: Afp
IRAN has bombed Islamic State targets close to its borders, British and American analysts are reporting. The Iranian air force used F-4 Phantom fighters to attack Diyala province on Iraq’s eastern border. Footage on the Al Jazeera TV news channel of a Phantom striking a target ten days ago is the first visual evidence of Iran’s involvement in the war. Diyala is where the Iraqi army drove IS from several towns and villages last month. A senior Iranian official denied his country’s involvement. But Gareth Jennings, of IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly, said: ‘Iran and Turkey are the only regional operators of the F-4. With the location of the incident not far from the Iranian border and Turkey’s unwillingness to get involved militarily, indicators point to this being an Iran Air Force aircraft.’ Meanwhile, a security guard and his son died when a car bomb exploded outside the residence of Iran’s ambassador in the Yemeni capital Sanaa. It was planted by al-Qaeda with support from IS. Ambassador Hossein Niknam was not at home.

Iraq’s Interior ministry said the woman is Saja Abdul Hamid al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi national who travelled to Syria before arriving in Lebanon. IN CINEMAS DECEMBER 19 /DumbAndDumberIreland
To celebrate the release of the comedy DUMB AND DUMBER TO, we’ve teamed up with Universal Pictures Ireland to offer you the chance to attend the Irish Premiere with a friend. The event will be held on Monday 15th December at 7pm in the Savoy Cinema. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their signature roles as Lloyd and Harry in the sequel to the smash hit that took the physical comedy and kicked it in the nuts: DUMB AND DUMBER TO. The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given. DUMB AND DUMBER TO stars Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Kathleen Turner, Laurie Holden, Rob Riggle, Rachel Melvin and Steve Tom.

House about we think this through
O
ver the past few days, I’ve been hearing a lot of people talking a plethora of rubbish about homelessness and how there aren’t enough beds in homeless services and the economy is bad, etc. As a social care worker in a homeless service, I can tell you this is all true. However, everyone from the taxi driver to the TD is pushing the idea of filling ghost estates with homeless people as the magic solution. What these well-meaning folk don’t understand is that the housing crisis is not in itself the homeless crisis. Sure, we need more social housing for those with only a housing need, and maybe that’s where ghost estates could come in handy. However, filling them with a homeless population with complex issues like addiction and men-
tal health is just going to create ghettos and set people up to fail. The moral panic of recent days scares me. I would urge people not to spout nonsense about solving problems they don’t understand. It will lead the government to have to be seen to be doing something quickly and that’s not what we need. We need them to listen to experts, professionals and service users and do something that shows some insight for once. Instead of pumping money into more beds for homeless services, it would make a hell of a lot more sense to raise rent allowance to something that would allow a decent standard of living, make it quicker and more efficient, make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against those in receipt of it and put some money into better addressing the root causes of homelessness by creating an easily ac-

Lifestyle Adidas My two favourite words right now are ‘comfortable’ and ‘chic’; and the combination of the two may be my favourite thing ever! So I think you’ll see why I’ve become ever so obsessed with the Mountain Clash range from Adidas. The silhouettes are simple, but the vibrant mountain mash-up prints seek inspiration from designer of the moment Alexander Wang. The range includes hoodies, gilets and zip-up printed jackets, all of which can be styled with pieces you may already have like skinny jeans or leather leggings. The collection is available at Lifestyle Sports nationwide and online at lifestylesports.com.

Give her the ultimate Christmas gift
For guys planning on a romantic Christmas proposal, here are Seamus Fahy of Voltaire Diamonds’ top tips
may turn milky/cloudy on a sunny day. Your diamond may also turn blue under artificial UV light. The scale is from nil to very strong, I advise buying diamonds with only nil to medium.
1. Certification : The top certification bodies are IGI / GIA / HRD / EGL and IGL. Other certification bodies can cost substantially less as some are not as strict. Always ask to see certificate.
7. Wedfit engagement ring : To avoid costs of custom-made wedding rings, check if a straight wedding ring fits snugly against the engagement ring.
2. Colour : Ranges from D (colourless) to Z (strong yellow tints). D – F colourless, G – H near colourless. Always ask the jeweller if you can inspect the diamond in daylight. 3. Clarity : Refers to flaws or blemishes in the diamond. 99% of diamonds contain these. My advice is select a stone that is slightly included and the flaws can only be seen under magnification and not visible to the naked eye. 4. Carat Weight : One carat weighs 0.2g. Prices jump at what we call ‘magic points’. Magic points are 0.5ct, 1ct, 1.5ct, 2ct etc. Best value is to buy at just under the magic points, eg a 0.9ct stone can cost up to 20 per cent less than a 1ct stone. 5. Cut : Some people get confused between cut and shape of the diamond. Shape refers to round, princess, cushion, pear, emerald etc. Cut refers to how well the diamond was crafted from its rough state. The grade scale ranges from excellent to poor – select one with an excellent or very good grade. 6. Fluorescence : The diamond’s reaction to ultra violet (UV) light. If a diamond has fluorescence it
8. Insurance : Do not over-insure your ring. If it’s lost or stolen, most insurers replace the ring or write a cheque for the value. 9. Platinum versus white gold : White gold stays fresher looking for much longer than platinum. It’s also a little lighter than platinum and needs to be rhodium plated every 12 to 18 months, this costs approx €20. Platinum goes a dull grey very quickly.
Voltaire Diamonds meet all clients privately at their offices on Harcourt Street. Due to low overheads their prices are up to 30% less than other high street Jewellers.

DVDs, special editions and merchandise are a good bet for Christmas – but if you’re not a film buff, it can be hard to know where to start. Anna Smith offers her advice
A
s stocking fillers go, a DVD is always a winner. But how to choose the right one? if you’ve got a cult film fan in the family and a bit of money to spend, start by looking at special editions of classics such as the 30th Anniversary Ultimate collector’s Edition of Blade Runner, out now on Blu-ray. the commemorative gift set includes all ten-plus hours of bonus content from the Ultimate collector’s Edition from 2007, with the addition of a new photo gallery of sketches from director Ridley scott, photos from the set and more. there’s also a 72-page production art book and the DVD includes all five feature film versions: the Final cut, ’92 Director’s cut, domestic and international theatrical versions and the rare ‘work print’. Your Blade Runner completist will not be disappointed. For a more recent cult watch,
Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For will be out on DVD and Blu-ray on December 15, available as a twin pack with the first film. A limitededition deluxe box set will also include new merchandise and collector’s items. A future cult classic arrived earlier this year when Lenny Abrahamson (garage, Adam & Paul) – a Dubliner with a thoughtful eye for the poignant and absurd – gave us Frank, an offbeat riff on the tortured artist theme with Michael Fassbender (disguised by a papier-mâchè head), Domhnall gleeson and Maggie gyllenhaal. Meanwhile, Brendan gleeson has been tipped for an oscar for his committed turn as a good priest in troubled times in Calvary, John Martin McDonagh’s bleakly funny ‘who will do it’ murder-mystery-cum-lament for ireland’s lost faith. Yes, it was a golden year for the irish in cinema (even if Brendan o’carroll’s potty-mouthed matriarch Mrs Brown dominated). nonfictional fare such as One Million Dubliners, Aoife kelleher’s moving documentary about glasnevin cemetery and the people above and below its surface, also caused ripples, an example of documentary making at its top level and a real film achievement. For kids (or big kids), The Lego Movie is a safe bet if they don’t have it already – the Minifigure edition comes with a free toy. And of course, there’s always something available to feed that Frozen passion. the singalong edition is out now and there’s no shortage of merchandise, from dolls to pyjamas and duvet sets – there’s even a Frozen bowling bag. of course...
Fans of Uk teen comedy The Inbetweeners 2 will be fully satisfied with its recent Blu-ray release (along with the first movie) on December 1, while the Us comedy Bad Neighbours is rather good for a giggle. there are far more sharp, lyrical and politically incorrect musings from the notorious tommy tiernan in Stray Sod, a new live DVD recorded during an outdoor performance in Baltimore, co cork earlier this year. the incorrigible navan funnyman wonders how these straitened times have affected our sense of self, explores Dubai economics, parenthood and explains ‘why ugly newsreaders help viewers concentrate’. And what of that cinefile friend who likes discovering cinema’s lesser known gems? i’d recommend the swedish comedy-drama We Are The Best!, the original Us thriller Blue Ruin, or the classy Uk period drama Belle. Happy shopping.

Danger man: Sanchez denied Danny Welbeck and also substitute olivier Giroud. after a less-than-inspired opening half, it was the introduction of Giroud for alex oxlade-chamberlain that added a spark to what had, until then, been a less than threatening home attack. Within minutes of taking the field, the France international forced a fine save from Forster before setting up Welbeck, whose shot was pushed away by the keeper. When the goal came, it was Giroud whose presence caused mayhem and aaron Ramsey cut the ball back for Sanchez to fire in. Saints finished the match with ten men due to some late injuries.
Petit angered by indifference to henry EmmanuEl PEtit has condemned apathy in France towards thierry Henry and claimed the country would be better under German rule. Henry (pictured) has been linked with a return to arsenal in a non-playing role after

people don’t like thierry Henry,’ Petit said. ‘in England, he has a statue. that says a lot. He is revered over there. ‘France is hypocritical and cowardly – having been invaded by the Germans, we would be better led today.’

He’s got the Ben-tekkers to become a huge star Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke could become one of the world’s best players, according to his manager Paul Lambert. Benteke (pictured), returning after a three-match suspension, scored a fabulous solo goal at Crystal Palace on tuesday night as Villa claimed a crucial 1-0 win. It was the 24-year-old’s first goal since March and an indication he could finally be rediscovering top form since returning in october from a seven-month lay-off with an Achilles injury. After watching Benteke’s fine match-winning performance in just his fifth game of the season, Villa boss Lambert insisted the striker had a big future. ‘Christian scored a fantastic goal,’ Lambert said. ‘I have been fortunate in my own career to play with some of the best in the world and, if he keeps progressing like this and learning, hopefully he’ll hit those heights. He is certainly a terrific footballer.’ Villa’s win at Palace was their first victory since mid-september, but they haven’t lost in their last four league games and entertain rock bottom Leicester on sunday.

Dann, touted for a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad, said: ‘It’s nice for people to talk about you in that way but you just get on with your job. ‘I am disappointed to give the ball away there, it is uncharacteristic for me. ninety-nine times out of 100 I would clear that down the line but things like that happen in football.’

Goals from eden hazard, Didier Drogba and loic Remy kept Jose Mourinho’s men six points clear at the top of the table and extended Tottenham’s embarrassing winless run at stamford Bridge to 28 games. The Blues’ 0-0 draw on Wearside and the absence of suspended star striker Diego Costa must have given spurs hope they could end their hoodoo – but it was a game that only underlined the hosts’ vast technical, tactical and physical superiority. Barca take Messi to the next level Barcelona are to make a second appeal against lionel Messi’s yellow card on Sunday. Messi was booked for time-wasting after he was apparently hit on the head by a plastic bottle in Sunday’s la liga game at Valencia. A huge reduction in losses should mean Manchester City will comply with uefa’s financial fair-play rules this season. The club’s annual report shows City had record revenues of £346.5million for the year up to May 31 2014, a 28 per cent increase, while overall losses were halved to £23m. Of that, £16m was the fine imposed by uefa for FFP breaches and does not count towards this year’s calculation. The results also show City no

Sergio slays demons at stadium of fright
SERGIO AGUERO gave a striking masterclass as Manchester City laid their Stadium of Light hoodoo to rest in emphatic style. Connor Wickham briefly raised Sunderland’s hopes of recording a fifth successive home win over the champions when he raced through a static defence to flick home a 19thminute opener. But that merely served to spark Aguero into life. The Argentinian still had it all to do when he received

shot past Costel Pantilimon. The roles were reversed seven minutes before the break when a tremendous passing move climaxed with Yaya Toure firing a pass in to Aguero, who provided a sublime first-time lay-off for Jovetic to thunder the ball into the net. Jack Rodwell did his best to prove he should have been given more of a chance at City, almost levelling before the break only for Fernandinho to block his powerful header

Pablo Zabaleta took a superb return ball from Samir Nasri before cleverly lifting the ball over Pantilimon for an exquisite third. Aguero capped a sparkling City performance 19 minutes from time when he lashed home James Milner’s cross for his 16th goal in his last 14 appearances.

Dominant Chelsea see off spurs as gunners grab late win by nick METcALfE CHELSEA kept their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a convincing 3-0 derby win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge last night. The Blues, chasing their first league title since 2010, scored two first-half goals in quick succession through Eden Hazard and Didier Drogba to take complete charge. Loic Remy added a third after the break as Tottenham’s miserable run at Stamford Bridge – where they haven’t won since 1990 – goes on. Manchester City kept up the pressure in second place with a 4-1 victory at Sunderland. Meanwhile, an 89th-minute goal from Alexis Sanchez gave Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 win over high-flying Southampton at the Emirates, moving the Gunners up above Swansea and into sixth place.

Foley says good deal on cards to keep O’Mahony at Munster MunSTeR boss Anthony Foley has admitted he will push for a ‘good deal’ to ensure Ireland flanker Peter O’Mahony commits his future to Thomond Park. O’Mahony’s two-year joint deal with Munster and the Irish Rugby Football union (IRFu) expires this summer and the 25-year-old is locked in talks over an extension.
‘It’s important that we look after our players’ Combative Munster captain O’Mahony’s influence has soared with both club and country in the past two years, to the point where interest from French Top 14 sides is inevitable. Head coach Foley revealed he is taking an active part in joint
discussions between Munster and IRFu bosses to ensure O’Mahony is offered competitive terms to stay in Ireland. ‘We’re all involved in that and the rigmarole ole that goes on with it,’ it, said Foley. ‘It’ss important that we look after our players, that we make sure they get good deals and they also have the stability of ensuring they stay with Munster. It’s important to push for a good deal for every important player.’ Munster’s Ireland quartet Felix Jones, Dave Foley, Stephen Archer and Dave Kilcoyne signed new dual-level deals with the IRFu this week. Head coach Foley said the timing
of the new contracts could prove a boost in nudging the fresh deal for O’Mahony over the line. O’Mahony himself has admitted he expects to make progress on the contract front in the next few weeks, with all the signs pointing to a renewal with r Munster. Munster Johnny Sexton’s summer return to Leinster from Racing Metro has proved a huge shot in the arm for fo Irish bosses aiming to keep all their top k talents in the domestic set-up. Ireland’s Ireland’ head coach Joe Schmidt has made no secret of his delight at that move and he will no doubt keep a keen eye on developments with O’Mahony.
