A Dublin man has been given a sixyear sentence after being convicted of damaging a painting worth €10million. Andrew Shannon, 49, of Willians Way, Ongar, pleaded not guilty to damaging the Claude Monet painting entitled Argenteuil basin With A Single Sail boat (1874) at the national Gallery of ireland on Clare Street on June 29, 2012. A jury of seven women and five men returned a verdict of guilty on that charge yesterday afternoon following almost one-and-a-half hours of deliberation on day eight of the trial. The court heard Shannon has 48 previous convictions in this and other jurisdictions, some of which are for burglary and theft offences involving antiques. in november 2011 he was sentenced in Wicklow Circuit Court for handling stolen property involving maps dating from 1651 with a value of €6,000. The painting is now back on display following a period of restoration.

by Fiona FerguSon

Judge Martin nolan imposed the sentence and suspended the final 15 months on strict conditions including that Shannon not enter into a public gallery or any other institution or building where paintings are publicly displayed. Garda Conor O braonain told Kerida naidoo bl, prosecuting, that Shannon had entered the gallery just before 11am and had gone to where the painting was on display. He left and returned a short time later and appeared to fall forward, striking the painting. Shannon said he had been dizzy and had fallen forward. Judge nolan said Shannon must have known the painting was valuable and historic. He said it was ‘abnormal’ to cause damage in the way he did. Judge nolan had earlier directed the jury to find Shannon not guilty of damaging two paintings at the Shelbourne hotel on January 8, 2014.

We’ve been Spectring you, Mr Bond... DANIEL CRAIG is to return for his fourth 007 outing in Spectre, alongside Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes... and the oldest-ever Bond girl. Director Sam Mendes unveiled the title of the 24th James Bond film yesterday, which then led to speculation that the spy could once more face his old enemy, Spectre chief Ernst Stavro Blofeld. ‘I think this has more mischief in it, a little more of the unexpected,’ said Mendes. ‘But it would be perhaps too easy to assume that because the movie is called that, the villain is someone we already know.’ Mendes is back in the director’s chair after 2012’s Skyfall became the biggestgrossing film of all time in the UK, taking

by DOMINIC YEATMAN more than €811million around the world. He revealed his lineup at Pinewood studios, where filming starts on Monday before heading to Mexico, Tangiers and Rome. At 50, Italian actress Monica Bellucci will be the oldest Bond girl, joined by Grand Budapest Hotel star Lea Seydoux, 29. Fiennes replaces Judi Dench as M, Ben Whishaw is back as Q and Naomie Harris as Moneypenny. Our own Andrew Scott – brilliant as Moriarty in TV’s Sherlock – makes his Bond debut. 007 will be back in an Aston Martin, this time a DB10, and the film is due out in November.

Sinn Féin councillor’s phone threat A DUBLIN councillor has defied a threat to his life to attend a Right2Water public meeting. Jonathan Graham, a Sinn Féin councillor for Clondalkin, says he received a threatening phone call on Monday, warning him it would be in the ‘best interest of his life’ not to attend last night’s meeting. Speaking to Metro Herald, the 20-year-old said the caller was a woman with a Dublin accent who said she was passing on a message. He added: ‘She then labelled me as a murderer and a

‘Too much time had passed for Ansbacher tax cases’ by METRO HERALD sTAff

Prosecutions were not taken in the alleged Ansbacher tax evasion cases because too much time had elapsed, the head of the revenue commissioners says. Five former ministers have denied they held offshore accounts linked to the cayman islands after being named under privilege in the Dáil by sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald. revenue chair Josephine Feehily said almost 300 cases were identified but in around half those cases no money was found to be owed. she said a ten-year rule in the legislation barred the organisation from taking prosecutions. ‘that is where we found ourselves in a position where the law simply was an impediment.’ on Wednesday, Ms McDonald said whistleblower claims surrounding the affair came from a ‘very credible source’. she said the whistleblower named former Progressive Democrats leader Des o’Malley; ray Macsharry; Gerard collins; Máire Geogheghan-Quinn; an ‘s Barrett’; and others.

Hands tied: Revenue chair Josephine Feehily Ms Feehily told the oireachtas Public Accounts committee (PAc) the taxman had carefully examined a number of cases with a view to prosecution but she could not publicly identify individuals. Former tánaiste Mary Harney has denied shutting down the inquiry into offshore accounts after it was alleged Mr o’Malley, her predecessor as Progressive Democrats leader, held one. Meanwhile, independent tD shane ross said: ‘When you see people prosecuted for very small amounts of tax evasion in this country and other people getting settlements which appear reasonably generous without prosecution, it does look utterly wrong.

’Tis the season to be sick, sober and sorry

SOME 75 per cent of Irish adults have pulled a sickie from work due to being too hungover, a survey has found. The rather sobering figure comes as people prepare for a booze-fuelled season of family get-togethers, catchups with friends and, of course, the office Christmas party. The study, focused on the Irish relationship with alcohol, shows the greatest symptoms of a hangover to be a busting headache and sore body (30 per cent), with one in five experiencing a sick stomach. Feelings of overwhelming emotion and even paranoia were recorded by 11 per cent of respondents, while the dreaded ‘fear’ gets a special mention from those who have spent a night on the juice. Aside from physical effects, drinking habits have also led to some embarrassing situations. Up to 20 per cent of employees have

told their boss ‘what they really think’ under the influence, and 19 per cent admitted to leaking salacious office gossip to a colleague. Perhaps a less negative outcome to drinking, but just as awkward, is that 70 per cent say they have got hot and heavy with a co-worker at an office shindig. Some 26 per cent of respondents are planning up to eight nights out over Christmas, with 40 per cent saying they consume between five and ten alcoholic drinks on a night out. So what’s the tonic, apart from cutting down on the bottle? Well, according to Lifeline Hangover Defence, which carried out the survey, the top cure is a strong coffee, a breakfast roll, and a brisk walk out in the open air. Energy drinks, the hair of the dog, and copious amounts of tea and takeaways also prove quite popular with suffering tipplers, it said.

Driven mad with commute? IF YOUR train or Luas journey is getting boring, spare a thought for those who drive to work. Car drivers who commute show a lower life satisfaction than those who don’t. Compared to ‘active’ modes of transportation, people taking a car experience more negative moods, a qualitative survey of 3,409 drivers in Canada suggests. This is partly due to the greater

mental effort involved in driving and the frustration of traffic. ‘Physical activity can mitigate commuting-related stress but the real constraint is time scarcity. Longer commutes mean less time for other activities,’ says Margo Hilbrecht, a health science professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada. The findings were revealed in World Leisure Journal.

He was strongly warned not to slip up in his 8am talk with BBC radio 1’s nick Grimshaw – in which he said he was sick of being seen as squeaky clean. ‘The briefing is “no swearing” which is difficult for me as I have a potty mouth,’ Bloom, 37, said as the chat kicked off. only seconds later he dropped a clanger when he was asked if he ever went home in the blond wig he wore as elf legolas in the lord of The rings and Hobbit films. asked by Grimmy: ‘do you ever go home with that hair?’ Bloom blundered: ‘I go home with that s***. Wave of fury as officer in chokehold death cleared

by DANIEL BINNS

PROTESTS have erupted across America after a white policeman was cleared of unlawfully killing an unarmed black man with a chokehold. More than 60 arrests were made in Manhattan, where demonstrators lay down at Grand Central station and blocked the Brooklyn Bridge. Other rallies, largely peaceful, spread from New York to Georgia and California after the grand jury announced Daniel Pantaleo would not be charged over the death of Eric Garner, 43. A video shot by an onlooker showed Mr Pantaleo, 29, place Mr Garner in a chokehold as he tried to arrest him for allegedly selling duty-free cigarettes on the streets of Staten Island in July. The asthma sufferer was heard repeatedly saying: ‘I can’t breathe.’ As protesters in New York yesterday announced further long-term action, Mr Garner’s widow, Esaw, said. ‘This fight ain’t over, it’s just begun.’ Federal prosecutors responded by saying they would conduct their own investigation into the death. The case has been likened to the fatal police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri.

Troubled Rudd attacks witness AC/DC’s Phil Rudd was held by police after scuffling with a witness in his forthcoming court case. The drummer tried to punch a ‘larger’ man outside a cafe in Tauranga, New Zealand, a source claims. But 60-year-old Rudd (pictured) was no match for him and was pushed away. The source added: ‘It was like a chihuahua trying to fight a big dog.’ Rudd was freed on bail at Tauranga district court. Last month he was charged with threatening to kill. He denies it.

STUDENT leaders say they may pull back from protest sites in Hong Kong. Members of the Federation of Students said they are considering ditching the action as part of their fight for greater democracy. Public support for the protests – which have involved violent clashes with police – appears to have fallen.

Cosby show canned

Bono’s bike smash was Theatre axes performances after new victim talks of sex assault all his fault A THEATRE axed Bill Cosby’s scheduled performances for this weekend as he became engulfed by more sex assault claims. The Tarrytown Music Hall, north of New York City, announced the cancellation in an email to ticketholders. Cosby had two sold-out engagements in Tarrytown tomorrow but half of the ticket buyers wanted refunds. Some of Cosby’s shows in other states have been postponed after at least 20 women made statements against him. Cosby denies all allegations but fresh claims were made at a press conference in Los Angeles yesterday. Flanked by three weeping women, lawyer Gloria Allred called on Cosby to waive the statute of

by sHAROn MARRis limitations to allow women to obtain justice. One of them, identified only as Chelan, said she was 17 and working at a Las Vegas Hilton in 1986 when she was introduced to Cosby. He invited her to his suite to meet a modelling agency photographer. She had a cold, he gave her what he said was an antihistamine with a double Amaretto. She said he walked her to bed and ‘began pinching my left nipple and humping my leg while he was grunting.’ ‘I could not open my eyes. I couldn’t move or say anything. I felt something warm on my legs. Then I blacked out.’

Apple accused over deleting non-iTunes songs

APPLE has been controlling the content of your iTunes library for a lot longer than you think. The tech giant deleted music iPod owners downloaded from rival online music stores, a US court has heard. Each time an Apple user with noniTunes music tried to sync their device, between 2007 and 2009, they were told to

restore the players to factory settings. This was a deliberate ploy to wipe rival files, a court heard. Apple is contesting a lawsuit brought by rivals and customers who accuse it of abusing its monopoly position in the digital music player market. The plaintiffs are seeking some €285million

in damages, claiming Apple’s behaviour forced them to pay more for music and hardware. Under US anti-trust laws, if the case is successful, the damages could rise to about €811million. Apple claims that deleting songs bought from rival stores was a legitimate security measure.

BONO’S bicycle prang was completely his own fault, The Edge has revealed. The U2 frontman came a cropper in Fall: Bono GeTTy New York’s Central Park two weeks ago and while his guitarist sympathised with his ‘car-crash’ injuries, he admitted there was no one else to blame but Bono himself. ‘It was a Sunday, a lot of people in the park and he just wasn’t paying enough attention,’ he told US radio station KROQ. ‘He was going fast down a bit of a hill and somebody came out onto the cycle way, he swerved to avoid them and just went straight over the bars.’ The Edge added the singer has been told he can’t move for the ‘next couple of months’ but was ‘bouncing back’.

Shop bans ‘violent’ game Mass arrest over elephant

AUSTRALIA: The world’s best-selling video game has been removed from sale because its violent content upset shoppers. Grand Theft Auto V won’t be sold at Target after 40,000 people told the chain it encourages ‘sexual violence and murder’. Rockstar Games said it was disappointed.

INDIA: A village has been threatened with arrest after an elephant was allegedly poisoned. Every man in Balijuri could be held, wildlife officials said, ‘if the allegation stands up’. Villagers claimed the elephant was electrocuted but no evidence of that was found in Nagaon district.

‘Forced’ donation to end Reprieve for ‘sick’ killer

CHINA: Organs from executed prisoners will no longer be used in transplants – over concerns convicts may have been pressured to donate. But, as the nation has one of the world’s lowest levels of donation, there are worries over where a replacement supply will come from January.

AMERICA: The execution of a ‘delusional’ inmate who killed his in-laws was halted when lawyers argued he was too mentally ill to be put to death. Schizophrenic Scott Panetti, 56, who tried to call Jesus Christ as a witness at his 1995 trial, was given a stay of execution by Texas judges on Wednesday.

IS inspired me to behead five victims, serial killer declares He carved ‘36’ into leg – the number he planned to kill by GERARD COUZENS

AUSTRIA: An undercover guard is to be hired by a top health spa which has seen a rise in the number of couples getting frisky in the sauna. The new employee will be hard to spot as, like customers at the Parkbad sauna in the northern city of Linz, he or she will be in the buff too.

A SERIAL killer has admitted beheading five victims after watching videos of executions by Islamic State militants, police in Brazil said last night. Jonathan Lopes de Santana carved the number 36 into his leg because that was the number of people he hoped to murder, officers revealed. They said the 23-year-old had also drawn a picture on his arm of the axe he used in the slaughter.

‘Murderer targeted homeless drug users’

Kenya police arrest 77 Chinese nationals in espionage probe Police in Kenya are consulting technical experts over whether 77 chinese nationals arrested with advanced communications equipment were committing espionage, an official said. The chinese were arrested in several houses in an upscale Nairobi neighbourhood this week with equipment that Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper said was capable of hacking into government servers. ‘We have roped in experts to tell us if they were committing crimes of espionage,’ said

Ndegwa Muhoro, the head of criminal investigations for Kenya’s police. These people seem to have been brought here specifically for a mission which we are investigating.’ The arrests began on Sunday, when computer equipment in one of the houses the chinese nationals had rented near the US embassy and UN headquarters caught fire, killing one person. Police said it appeared the group was manufacturing ATM cards.

Caught: Police take Jonathan Lopes de Santana to court hearing

Police chief Marcos Batalha said: ‘He told us he got his ideas from videos of Taliban and Islamic State fighters.’ Lopes de Santana began his killing spree on Saturday in Mogi das Cruzes, near São Paulo. He was arrested at home on Wednesday after a witness at one of the crime scenes took down his car number plate. Police said he had targeted homeless drug users as he saw it as ‘less serious’ than killing taxpayers. However, the dead included a woman on her way to work and another victim was out exercising. A man who was burned and stabbed by Lopes de Santana is fighting for his life in hospital.

Lee EEvans opens up about standing do down from stand-up Al Carr: Chatty Man Alan

1. Funk Night

3 Lucy’s going out of her way to spring a surprise party in Not Going Out

BBC4, 9pm

Producer Mark Ronson is attracting plaudits for his hot new James Brown-inspired track Uptown Funk – so here’s a timely look back to where the grooviest genre in music history got started. Parliament’s George Clinton is among the movers and shakers on a night which kicks off with The Story Of Funk (9pm) and moves on to Genius Of Funk (10pm).

Gemma Hayes puts in a live performance on The Works

2. Alan Carr: Chatty Man

C4, 10pm The chat will be going nine to the dozen tonight as speed-talking Lee Evans chews the ear off our host, who’ll be quizzing him on whether he’s really packed in stand-up for good or whether he’s likely to stage Status Quo-style comebacks. Plus, George Ezra performs his new single, Listen To The Man.

4

1 George Clinton shares his Funkadelic philosophy Funk Night

3. Not Going Out BBC1, 9.30pm

This old-fashioned farce of a sitcom leaves no crossed wire untwisted tonight as Lee (Mack) gets himself into a right pickle involving Lucy’s plans to throw a surprise birthday for her parents – though her dad (Geoffrey Whitehead) hates surprises. Hugh Dennis’s daft Italian accent is the scene-stealer.

4. The Works

RTÉ1, 8.30pm There’s a real treat in store this week as Gemma Hayes will be performing a special acoustic rendition of To Be Your Honey. She’ll also be discussing the new creative approach behind her fifth studio album. There is also a profile of internationally renowned artists Dorothy Cross. Host John Kelly will also be reviewing the upcoming festive film Get Santa.

5. Today’s Film: Enough Said

5 James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss hook up in Enough Said

YOUR GUIDE TO THIS EvENING’S ESSENTIAL vIEWING outings for Sopranos legend James Gandolfini. He plays Albert, an overweight divorcee with an odd aversion to tomatoes, who starts a hesitant relationship with insecure masseuse and fellow divorcee Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). What lies in the path of their true happiness? Only a minefield of misconceptions and misunderstandings. And here’s something to look out for – Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson also puts in a fine performance as Albert’s daughter, Tess.

6. Masters of Sex

RTÉ2, 11.05pm As the drama continues, Johnson is

invigorated at the prospect of finding a cure to Masters’ sexual difficulties. Meanwhile, Libby attempts to prove her worth to Robert and asks Johnson to provide her with an alibi while she canvasses a tenement in support of a rent strike.

7. Gogglebox

Channel 4, 9pm Who knew so many people got spooked out by watching TV? The makers of the Beeb’s Sunday-night ghost story, Remember Me, must have been delighted by the Goggleboxers jumping out of their skins on their settees – and they all had their house lights turned up

bright. The knifing of BBC2’s Posh People was spot on, too.

8. Dornálaíocht Beo TG4, 7.30pm

The National Intermediate Boxing Championships are sure to pack a punch and put some pep back into your evening. Coverage of the finals at the Irish Amateur Boxing Association event comes from the National Stadium in Dublin.

9. I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

3e and UTV, 9pm With just 48 hours to go before the winner is revealed on Sunday, will

anyone else pull off a spectacular Jimmy Bullard-style fall from grace? Or a Nadia Forde disappearing act? In the jungle, it’s but a wee small slip between glory and ignominy.

10. The Graham Norton Show

BBC1, 11.05pm Expect much swooning and fainting in the studio tonight – and that’s just Graham – as One Direction drop in for a chat and a quick burst of new single Night Changes. It’ll be interesting to see how fellow guests Jamie Oliver and Michael Keaton attempt to make themselves heard above the screaming mob.

SEE DOROTHy cROSS: TROvE

Celebrated Cork-born artist Dorothy Cross is probably best known for her Ghost Ship – a luminous lightship temporarily moored in Dublin Bay – which won her international acclaim in the late 1990s. In subsequent exhibitions, she’s frequently worked with various media to create work that often blurs the boundary between art, nature and archaeology. Jim Broadbent is an appealingly naïve Santa in this edgier-than-usual movie about a kid trying to spring Father Christmas from jail. Rafe Spall is the ex-con father reluctantly going along for the ride. Watch out for reindeer galore.

Men, WOMen & children (15)

Families spend more time on the internet than with each other – sound familiar? This film from Jason Reitman (Juno, Up In The Air) makes good points but labours them in an overlong comedy drama. Adam Sandler, Judy Greer, Jennifer Garner and Ansel Elgort all appear.

ou’re a first-time director and you want a well-known actor to play a sarcastic but ultimately loveable old grouch… Who ya gonna call? Bill Murray, of course. Theodore Melfi relentlessly pursued the actor for this selfpenned comedy drama, and it paid off. Vincent is hardly civil even then but, gradually, a touching bond develops between the reluctant carer and the sensitive boy who’s smarting from his parents’ divorce and struggling to adjust to a new home. ultimately they’re both lonely, while Vincent might be a little more saintly than he seems. It’s a sweet, simple set-up with few surprises but plenty of charm thanks to a witty script and strong cast. McCarthy is sympathetic in a less comic role than usual, her stressed working divorcée coming

close to tears as she entrusts her son to a virtual stranger. Chris o’Dowd is enjoyable as oliver’s wisecracking teacher but the real surprise is Naomi Watts as Daka, a brittle, pregnant russian prostitute who calls on Vincent to trade wares and insults. It’s a treat to see the usually serious actress waddling around comically, tutting at everyone. While the affinity between Vincent and oliver is touching, it is clichéd: we’ve seen irresponsible old men lead their young charges astray before in the likes of Little Miss Sunshine, a film with more originality and edge. St Vincent feels a little boxticky and wraps things up in a sentimental fashion. But Bill Murray being a lovable old grouch will never get old. Anna smith

Jude’s making waves in sub saga Black Sea (15) HHHH✩ A SUBMARINE crew goes on a treasure hunt in this tense thriller from director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King Of Scotland). After being laid off, Scottish submarine worker Robinson (Jude Law) hears about a hoard of sunken gold lurking in an old Russian sub at the bottom of the Black Sea. If anything goes wrong, these men only have each other to rely on: a bit of a problem when half the crew are suspicious Russians who don’t speak

English and the other half includes a hot-headed Aussie diver (an excellent Ben Mendelsohn). Tempers fray and the tension mounts in this involving character-driven thriller that veers closer to horror in its most claustrophobic moments. While you can’t help wondering if a Scottish actor would have brought a more authentic flavour, Jude Law is good as the weathered, egalitarian captain. Meanwhile, the strong support includes Scoot McNairy (Argo), Michael Smiley (Kill List), David Threlfall (Shameless) and newcomer Bobby Schofield, whose innocent young recruit brings the film heart as it moves to a stirring conclusion.

Archaeologists explore an Egyptian tomb with a documentary crew in this predictable horror. James Buckley (The Inbetweeners) is the cameraman who reluctantly heads into the pyramid where an unseen predator lurks.

Oar inspiring: The globetrotting penguins tackle a nasty octopus

Penguins are a pic-me-up PenguinS Of MadagaScar (3d) (U) HHH✩✩ THE Madagascar penguins get their own spin-off movie, a hectic animation that zips from Antarctica to Venice to New York via Shanghai. Effectively a prequel, it sees the young Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller) and Rico (Conrad Vernon) taking sweet little Private (Christopher Knights) under their wings and developing careers in espionage. The story – vengeful octopus targets all penguins – isn’t particularly clever but there’s enough cuteness and chaos for kids and it’s a good-looking

animation, although it doesn’t particularly need to be in 3D. Look out for the evil octopus (John Malkovich) who has a habit of giving orders incorporating famous names (‘Nicolas – cage them!’ is the first in a stream of amusing nods to fellow actors). Those yearning for Benedict Cumberbatch’s dulcet tones won’t be disappointed: he voices a superior wolf leading an elite force. Sidekicks include a svelte owl (Annet Mahendru) and a demolitionist harp seal (Ken Jeong). Fun.

Watching out for the micromanager in you

I

am being micromanaged!’ is a refrain i hear all too often from clients when citing reasons for wanting to exit their positions. i also hear from the other side: ‘if only my team were more effective, i wouldn’t have to worry about the small stuff.’ it can be tricky coming from the other side and not as simple as it seems to those on the sidelines. For example, if you have a team of entry-level staff it is tempting to micromanage. Perhaps, enda Kenny has the same complaint or perhaps it is his team who have the issue given the challenges in government right now. One thing is for sure – nobody, and i mean nobody, enjoys or relishes being micromanaged. it is demotivating, gives the message you cannot be trusted and is manage To micro ren will utterly frustrating. ild it also sets up a your ch sult in a re learned usually overhelplessness child ing and between e d pend to falter ly employee and one like le tasks manager. in simp if we apply the same rationale when parenting children, it will pay dividends too. To micromanage your children will usually result in a child overdepending and they are likely to falter at times in doing the most simple of tasks through ‘learned helplessness’. it’s all well and good when you’re trying to be somewhere fast and the temptation is to do it for them. it’s similar to when you have a work deadline that seems easier, as a manager, to do things yourself. but avoid the temptation – it is a short-term approach which will backfire, and usually ends up in a learned helplessness scenario. as tempting as it is at times to micromanage, we usually come up with copious reasons for doing so. i recommend instead of focusing on why we do it, consider focusing on what it would look and feel like if we didn’t. What would it shed in our daily task list? How would it free us up for the big task of either running a division, department or organisation more effectively? The key in my experience to avoid becoming that dreaded micromanager – or the stereotypical ‘bad boss’ – comes from encouraging communication with your team. i don’t believe your team will feel micromanaged if your corrections and feedback of their work are just one small part of the interactions they have with you. Finally, don’t forget you need support too as a manager. Request a coach to work with you through this to build skills to become a really effective manager who ditches micromanagement if you figure you are on a rocky road to the controversial practice. ALAN PARDEW has praised Jose Mourinho’s table-topping Chelsea side as the best Blues team he has ever seen. Newcastle entertain the Premier League leaders in tomorrow’s early kick-off when they will try to become the first side to beat the Londoners this season. Chelsea continued their unbeaten start when they brushed aside Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and Pardew hailed the quality of Mourinho’s men. However, the Newcastle boss does not think they will go through the campaign without a defeat in one of the four competitions they are trying to win.

Striker Diego Costa will be available after suspension to take on the Toon Army but Pardew feels the Blues are bound to slip up sooner or later. ‘I think it’s difficult,’ the former West Ham boss said. ‘Obviously Arsenal have done it and Chelsea have come pretty close before,’. ‘But not in all competitions. That is impossible. ‘I think Jose has admitted that but they’re making a very good job of it at the moment. ‘It’s the best Chelsea team I’ve ever seen and I’ve watched them since I was about 12, so I know them pretty well. ‘I think Jose is pretty pleased with what he’s got.’ Newcastle aim to bounce back after a draw at Burnley and loss to West Ham ended a run of five straight league wins.

Unique challenge: Coach Matt O’Connor

BAck-TO-BAcks is As HARD As iT GETs in cHAMpiOns cup eUrOPe’s back-to-back fixtures are sold to us as the most unique challenge in rugby and that’s not just hype – it’s proven. how else can you explain Leinster running in six tries away to northampton last season and then seven days later not even getting away with a losing bonus point at the Aviva stadium? In the Us, they love to fall back on the ‘Any given sunday’ cliche, that in any weekend of the American Football season any team can beat any other, and the same is true in rugby. The tests provided in the back-to-back fixtures change each week despite the opposition remaining the same. Win and you have to guard against complacency while the motivation for the opponent will rise and the men in your own dressing room could lose their own edge. It only takes a slight swing of a few per cent in attitude and application to give a losing team the upper hand in the second game. The team who is more desperate often finds a way to win and in rugby, with so much based upon the fundamental physical effort, even the worst teams can go toe-totoe with big guns depending on the day, the mood and the circumstances. The last time Leinster travelled to the stoop to play harlequins, their opponents were so desperate they resorted to cheating, but it was not enough. Five years on and, despite the pool stage setting, both of these teams will meet in a knock-out style encounter. For Leinster, winning these back-toback games is crucial in establishing momentum into the new year where they want the focus to be on securing a home quarter-final. The route back to the top has to start on familiar ground in the knock-out stages because it’s a very tough task to go away to any of the other seven sides that will emerge from the intensity of these pool stages. For harlequins, languishing ninth in the Premiership, their season needs a spark to reignite it but with two wins from two they are still very much in the hunt to win this pool. What’s crucial for Leinster is to bring some more imagination to their play because their recent paint-by-the-numbers efforts are not going to win trophies or style points. grit may have won the day in April five years ago, but a cutting edge is a prerequisite in the new Champions Cup.

Jose’s Blues face mission impossible to stay unbeaten

Rugby World Cup is Ireland’s Call An All-IrelAnd bid to stage the 2023 rugby World Cup is to be officially unveiled. Officials from the Irish rugby Football Union (IrFU) will today join representatives from the northern Ireland executive and Irish Government to outline their ambition to jointly host the sport’s showpiece event. Tables turned on Fu-ming Murphy SNOOKER Shaun
