SUMMER TRAVEL
Tips & Tricks
Compiled by Meredith Strom
Vacations should be exciting, but sometimes traveling with kids can feel more like work than a break. Try these helpful tips to make sure both you and your child have a fun and memorable time.
BABY
• To help your baby feel more comfortable sleeping away from home, have him sleep in a portable travel bed for a few days before the trip. • An early dinnertime means the restaurant should be less crowded. You should find plenty of space to park your stroller as well as a shorter wait for food. • Most airlines don’t make you buy a ticket for infants if you hold the baby on your lap throughout the flight. If this doesn’t sound like something you want to do, call the airline and ask about discounted ticket prices for infants or if there are empty seats on the flight where you can belt your child into a government-approved car seat.
SUMMER VACATION by the Numbers
Summer trips in the U.S.:
TODDLER
• Buy new toys before the trip. On the journey to your destination, your toddler will be engaged with her new toys and less likely to get bored and cranky. • A room with a view will provide your toddler with a distraction while you’re at the hotel, especially when you need a five-minute break. • If you’re flying, bring a lollipop for your child to suck on during takeoff and landing. It forces her to swallow, which will stop her ears from hurting from the change in cabin pressure.

ELEMENTARY AGE
• Have your child get his own bags ready. Give him a list beforehand and check his bags after he has packed to make sure he remembered everything. • Pick an upbeat song to play every time you get in the car. Make sure it’s one your child likes, as this song will become a reminder of his vacation. • In five years, your child might dread looking at embarrassing family vacation photos, even if they’re ones he asked to take. To make sure he has a memento of the places he’s visited, buy postcards and write what you did on the back. Store them in album or box when you get home.
TWEEN/TEEN
• Ask for your tween’s or teen’s input into the trip. Children in this age group can often feel detached. When they help plan, they will not only feel more involved, they’ll probably have a better time on the trip since they’re doing activities they picked out. • Don’t buy your tween or teen cheesy souvenirs. Choose something she’ll be comfortable showing her peers. • Teens feel more at ease when they are being treated like adults. Get adjoining rooms so your child can have her own space, give her some spending money and let her sleep in at least one day. If you’re on a cruise or at a resort, encourage your teen to hang out in the teen club so she can make friends. This extra time will allow you to do activities your tween or teen finds boring, hang out with other adults or have a romantic evening with your significant other.

How do we elect a president? A step-by-step guide to the election process By Meredith Strom
1
Candidates announce they are running for president for a particular political party.
2
Candidates campaign to earn delegates from each state’s primary or caucus.
How does a caucus work? At a caucus, registered voters for a party meet to discuss their choice for president, pick delegates — often by a show of hands or by moving to a particular side of the room — and speak about other state party business. Prospective delegates can back a specific candidate or go uncommitted.
1,237

There are two types of primary:
A registered voter can vote for any candidate, regardless of party affiliation.
Republicans Democrats
How does a primary work?
Open
Delegates needed to clinch the nomination
Closed
A voter can only vote for the candidates in her own political party.

Philadelphia hosts the 2016 Democratic National Convention July 25-28.
The Democratic and Republican parties each hold a national convention to formally declare their nominees for president and vice president.
The Republican National Convention takes place in Columbus, OH, July 18-21.
Day — Nov. 8, 2016 4 Election Registered voters cast their votes for the candidate they support for president. These votes choose electors in the electoral college.
5
The Electoral College Votes — Dec. 19, 2016
All of a state’s electoral college votes go to the candidate who won the state’s popular vote. These votes actually determine who becomes president.

On Jan. 20, 2017, the new president is inaugurated. During the inauguration ceremony, the president-elect takes the Oath of Office and gives a speech about his or her hopes for the next four years.
The Democratic Party was founded in 1828 and got its symbol from Andrew Jackson’s presidential campaign when his opponents called him a not-so-nice nickname for a donkey. Jackson thought the nickname was funny and began using the donkey on his campaign posters. In the 1870s political cartoonist Thomas Nast began using the donkey to represent Democrats in his work, and the practice became widespread.
The Republican Party, or Grand Old Party (GOP), was formed in 1854. Its members favor a smaller government. During the Civil War, the elephant was often used in political images to represent the Republican Party. At the time, soldiers used the phrase “seeing the elephant” to mean they were in combat. Thomas Nast made the symbol popular in 1874 when he drew a cartoon that featured an elephant with the words “the Republican Vote” on its side.

LOCAL EATS
City Tavern
This centuries-old eatery served as the backdrop for some iconic historical events — the country’s first Fourth of July celebration was held here in 1777 — and it shows. Wait staff don period outfits, drinks are poured into pewter chalices and the 18th-century-inspired kids’ menu includes turkey potpie and meat-andcheese lasagna. 138 S. 2nd St.

Child Care
Accreditation for Child Care Centers & Preschools How does it benefit my child? By Meredith Strom While all childcare centers and preschools must be licensed by their state, accreditation certifies that a facility meets certain standards with regard to their staff, curriculum and building. Each accreditation agency has its own guidelines for a center to get its stamp of approval, and some review centers annually. Learn how three agencies determine whether a facility qualifies for accreditation and find local options in the Early Education Directory on p. 36.
The National Association of Education of Young Children has the most thorough accreditation process for facilities that serve children birth-K. About 1 of every 10 U.S. preschools is NAEYC accredited. The association uses observations, program and classroom portfolios and instructor and family surveys to assess schools. A preschool must have operated for at least a year before it can be considered for candidacy. The NAEYC checks certain standards during every site visit, with additional assessment standards chosen randomly. The school must demonstrate success with at least 80% of the randomly selected standards and all of the required standards, which include: • Assessment of child progress and health • Community, family and teacher-student relationships • Curriculum • Leadership and management • Teacher’s skills and qualifications • Physical environment What makes them different: The NAEYC specifically looks for abuse by teachers and makes sure at least one adult in each room has been certified in first aid and child CPR. It also provides SIDS-prevention procedures.
ULTIMATE FAMILY GUIDE • JULY 2016
The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools aims to provide a baseline for excellent schools (preK and up) in the mid-Atlantic region. Their process takes two to five years to complete. Before a school can become a candidate for accreditation, a member from the MSA-CESS (further shortened to MSCES in the Early Education Directory on p. 36) visits for a pre-assessment. If a school is offered candidacy, the staff begins a self-study, which can take nine months to two years to complete. After the school submits its self-study report, a team visits the school to validate the findings and recommend improvements. Three other groups within the MSA-CESS review both reports before the commission decides whether to offer accreditation. Standards on which the assessments are based include a school’s: • Assessment and evidence of student learning • Educational program • Facilities • Finances • Governance and leadership • Health and safety • Improvement planning • Information resources • Mission statement • Organization and staff • Student services • Student life and activities What makes them different: The MSA-CESS look for schools to have professional development programs and assesses whether a school promotes healthy relationships between teachers and students, offers age-appropriate instruction and conducts regular teacher evaluations.
To become accredited by the American Montessori Society, a school must operate for at least three years and be a full member of the AMS. Full membership requires that all lead teachers hold Montessori credentials for the grade they teach if they have students younger than 14. After accreditation, the school must submit yearly reports that outline their progress in these areas: • Documentation and use of results of student, teacher and curriculum assessments • Facility resources • Finances • Governance and leadership • Mission and vision • Personnel • Records, resources and support systems • Stakeholder communications and relationships • Teaching and learning What makes them different: An AMS accreditation means that the Head of School and at least 50% of all teachers have Montessori certification. Meredith Strom is an English major at Drexel University and a co-op intern at MetroKids.

BIG or Small? The Benefits of Independent Schools of All Sizes
By Suzanne Koup-Larsen Size is one important factor parents generally consider as a concrete way to differentiate schools when they choose one for their child. Most independent schools in the Delaware Valley have a fairly small enrollment, says Bobbi Hannmann, EdS, an educational consultant in Moorestown, NJ. Typically, they have fewer than 1,000 students, and for some schools that enrollment figure includes grades K-12. So how much should size play a part when seeking the right school?
Get a feel for the school
There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to independent schools. Choosing a small or large school depends on the child, and each child’s individual needs should be considered as a school is selected,” says Linda L. Phelps, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools in Plymouth Meeting, PA. Parents must consider their child’s age, temperament and academic needs. Also, whether it’s large or small, families should visit the school to see how the school feels, says Beverly Stewart, MEd, director of Back to Basics Learning Dynamics in Wilmington, DE.
“Once the child is confident in himself, he can really go anywhere.” -Bobbi Hannmann, EdS
“It’s important to see and feel the culture of the school,” continues Stewart. Independent schools function on different models: Some have K-12 in one location, while others serve only elementary
42 MetroKids.com
or only secondary school students. Some schools operate like a small school within a big school. For example, a school may be split into a lower, middle and upper school at one location. The three schools may operate almost autonomously, notes Barbara Kraus-Blackney, president of the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools, located in Bryn Mawr, PA. Larger schools might try to create a small-school atmosphere by dividing students into teams or via small class sizes, says Hannmann. Both smaller and larger independent schools have lots of benefits, depending on what suits your child and family.
Benefits of small schools
Smaller schools generally offer: • more individualized attention • smaller class sizes • lower student-to-teacher ratios • fewer layers of bureaucracy • flexibility in the curriculum to meet the needs of the students • a community feel “In a small school setting, you have teachers who know the kids,” says Kraus-Blackney. As a result, “children are less likely to slip through the cracks.” However, Stewart notes, “There can sometimes be higher expectations at a smaller school because teachers know the students better.” Small schools can mean smaller social circles, which may be a drawback for some students. They also may not have all the services — such as special education classes or speech therapists — that your child may require or offer all the clubs, activities and sports that your child wants to try.
Benefits of large schools
Larger schools generally have: • more diversity • more activities • more academic offerings • larger social groups • lots of opportunities to try different things Parents should note that more academic offerings does not necessarily mean academic superiority. Ivy League students come from all backgrounds, notes Hannmann, and experts say there is no Ivy League advantage for students from larger schools versus smaller ones. At a larger school, teachers and administrators may not know students as well, and some children may feel anonymous in large crowds of students. There also can be increased competition for spots on sports teams or in activities and courses.
The right fit
Don’t rely on numbers alone. “Check out each school personally to see what feels like the best fit,” advises Kraus-Blackney. “The most important thing is that the child is comfortable,” says Hannmann. “Once the child is confident in himself, he can really go anywhere.” Suzanne Koup-Larsen is a contributing author to MetroKids.

The School in Rose Valley
In an age when children are often pushed to specialize early, The School in Rose Valley’s Summer Day Camp encourages them to explore and experience a wide variety of stimulating activities. Children have a ‘Summer of Choices’ on this beautiful wooded campus, surrounded by a nature preserve, with two swimming pools, a woodshop, an organic garden, and sheep and chickens. Campers who are older than seven design their days, and children make life-long friendships at SRV Summer Camp. • Experienced, talented staff of educators, professionals, college students, and select high school students. • 1:4 counselor-to-camper ratio. • Everyone has daily swimming lessons. • Preschool program for three and four year olds with five full days, five half days or three full days per week. • 5 & 6 year old program where campers spend the morning with their groups and counselors doing a variety of activities. Each afternoon, children build confidence and independence by selecting their activities. • The Choice program is for campers who are seven to twelve years old. These children design their days choosing from: art, dance, archery, drama, music, sports & games, woodshop, nature, cooking, swimming, and general activities. • The CIT Leadership Program is for students finishing 7th and 8th grade who enjoy working with younger children and want to strengthen their leadership skills. • Weekly themes and celebrations. Pot luck suppers with variety shows. • Daily hours are 8:30 to 3:30, with Extended Care available from 7:30 am to 6 pm. • June 22 through August 14. Campers may come weekly, or for the season. • Near Media, PA.

ULTIMATE FAMILY GUIDE • JULY 2016
Making an immediate impact on the life of the children and their families
The moment you enter Pediatric Specialty Care you will discover a cheerful, warm and home-like environment where state-of-theart technology combines with stimulating, age-appropriate living. Each child that stays at a PSC community has amazing potential. It is our joy, and the focus of our team, to help the children meet their goals. Whether a stay is transitional, short term or long term, Pediatric Specialty Care’s staff work with families to ensure that the right level of care, activities, and training is provided to help children reach their fullest potential. Pediatric Specialty Care began in 1992, responding to the need for a “stepping stone” from hospi-
tals to home, emerging as a home-like, less restrictive setting. Over time, and through a merger with Post Acute Partners, PSC has grown to serve just under 200 children in 6 different locations throughout Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Pittsburgh. With a devotion to clinical growth, and increased services in unique settings and programs, PSC has evolved as a leader in pediatric care. Our clinical care includes 24/7 Nursing and Respiratory therapists, Dual Physician Coverage as well as Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy. Every child is seen weekly by a physician. Services and care PSC children receive may include Mechanical Ventila-
tion, Tracheostomy Care, IV Antibiotics, Apnea Monitors, Oxygen Therapy, Feeding Tubes, Stoma Care and Orthopedic Devices. Some of the medical profiles we serve include Chronic Lung Disease, Birth Defects & Genetic Disorders, Neuromuscular Diseases, Spinal Cord Injury, Anoxic Encephalopathy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cardiac Anomaly, Cystic Fibrosis, Muscular Dystrophy, and Intensive Wound Care Treatment. From enlisting the expertise of skilled designers, to partnering with local not-for-profit artist organizations, to creating special interactive stations and activities, PSC understands how important the visual environment is for the children, young adults and their families. Special attention is given to every detail to ensure the PSC communities are warm, inviting, clean, and appealing. Whether it is a cozy cottage, a historical loca-
tion or a modern space, each setting is cared for and special in its own unique way. There are private and semi-private rooms available for the children, and transitional suites available for families at most locations. As a “stepping stone” from hospital to home, it is clear that any community requires a soothing and comfortable environment, as well as the latest technology and equipment. However, what makes PSC so special and unique? Well, simply stated, the people. The staff. As one PSC parent shared, “The staff dedicates themselves to the whole being of a child…” Each and every individual at PSC is committed each and every day. PSC is making an immediate impact on the lives of the children and their families, so that these incredible children can reach their own amazing potential.
