Make Your Next Field Trip Exceptional By Will Bacha The Delaware Valley features many fascinating venues, but how can teachers enhance the field trip experience? The education team at Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum recommends that teachers think of field trips in three stages: Before, During and After.
Before
Many field trip venues provide information to help teachers plan for visits. For example, WheatonArts in Millville, NJ, furnishes educators with a packet containing directions, a preparation checklist and worksheets for students, among other materials. If teachers carefully read these materials and share them with students, everyone will know what to expect from the trip. The Please Touch Museum staff recommends that teachers visit before the trip to get familiar with the museum. Then, educators can decide which exhibits or programs best fit the class. Regina Lynch, curator of education at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover, DE, recommends that teachers “prepare students before the trip by asking why they think museums are important. Have them create questions to ask during their trip.” Thinking up questions beforehand can save time during the actual trip and inspire students to begin pondering relevant topics. The Museum of American Glass at

WheatonArts provides materials that prepare educators and students for visits. “In addition to information about the artists and artworks, these guides contain in-classroom activity suggestions that relate to what the students will see when they arrive,” says Pamela Weichmann, WheatonArts’ education director. Many area locations offer specifically tailored field trip programs, so the more accurately a teacher can describe what sort of experience he or she is looking for, the better the venue can assist.
During
Before the day of the field trip, teachers should check in with the staff to see what special activities are taking place that day. Mark Kehres, museum programs and training manager at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, notes that timed programs can vary from day to day. Guides at the box office describe the day’s programs and include a map of the museum’s spaces and exhibits.
Field trip educators emphasize the importance of encouraging students to engage and ask questions. Weichmann notes that “one of the unique features
of WheatonArts is the proximity to the creative process. Encourage students to engage.” Weichmann urges chaperones to stick to the field trip itinerary, as it has been designed to meet specifications. Diverging from the planned route or schedule can negatively impact not only the field trip but also other visitors’ experiences. Many area venues offer hands-on workshops to enhance field trips. WheatonArts provides workshops on topics such as polymer clay beads, ceramic trivets and watercolor resist painting.
After
After students return to the classroom, there are many ways to connect experiences from the field trip to the curriculum and keep students engaged.
Lynch suggests that, following a visit to the Biggs Museum, teachers ask students “to describe their favorite piece of art or ask if anything made them think about their other classes like history or math.” Teachers who follow these tips from the pros might just be ready to take students on the best field trip yet. Will Bacha is a MetroKids intern and recent graduate of Temple University.

One Liberty Observation Deck Takes Education to New Heights with Interactive SKY SCHOOL
F
ifty-seven floors above the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia’s tallest attraction, One Liberty Observation Deck, is the highest publicly accessible vantage point of America’s most historic city. Bringing together the best of Philadelphia art, music, sports and culture with audio zones and media installations laced throughout the space, it’s the only place where unprecedented views are met with unparalleled perks. Interactive touchscreen technology brings Philly’s famous neighborhoods and landmarks to your fingertips, allowing visitors to zoom-in-and-out for a closer look at destinations like the iconic Benjamin Franklin Bridge, William Penn statue atop City Hall and all of Philly. “There are new sights to see and lessons to learn in every visit,” says Jennifer Hesser, assistant general manager for the M56 Group-owned property — the masterminds behind attractions in Chicago, Paris, and Berlin. “Education is deeply woven into all of our visitor experiences as the city’s great history makes up so much of what you see. Our Sky School brings explorative learning to new heights for all ages.” Student group visitors of One Liberty Observation Deck get an elevated experience with access to their Sky School

educational resources. Supplemental materials offer early childhood, elementary, middle and high school students pre-, during- and post-visit activities to complement their self-guided tours. Students in grades 6-12 are guided through Selfie Scavenger Hunts while younger audiences are invited to draw photos and complete coloring worksheets depicting what they see from their bird’s eye view. The towering observatory is the only place to find the best 360° views of the city and is chock full of other traditional tourism elements as well. Viewfinders transport guests as far as street level and photo-worthy installations fill the space, like the life-sized Philadelphia Flyers penalty box or the larger than life Benjamin Franklin who is featured throughout the attraction. According to Diane Meglino, “Instructors are oftentimes just as excited to see Philly from the top as their students are.” As the destination’s group sales manager, she knows, “Our online Sky School planning tools help prepare in advance for the class’ arrival to the deck. Plus, our building’s bus loading zone, just steps from the building, makes student arrivals and departures both effortless and safe.”
Open three 365 days a year, the enclosed observatory offers hours of operation that make for spectacular views morning, noon and night, with a maximum capacity of 275 people at any given time. Student Group coordinators relish in the close proximity to other nearby attractions and restaurants with further customizable planning available upon request. Student groups can book their tours by contacting Diane Meglino at diane@ phillyfromthetop.com or by calling 215845-4160. New reduced student rates are available for groups of 20 or more. School Visits Bring TheaterAlive By Peyton Pflug Interactive experiences incorporated into the curriculum can spark student interest and make learning fun. Assemblies and performances often fulfill this function. Several companies deploy theater educators to schools, coordinating with literature curricula to bring plays alive.
Shakespeare brought to life
Classroom performances can help students connect with classic playwrights such as Shakespeare, whose work is required reading in many high schools. Philadelphia’s Lantern Theater Company brings theatrical learning tools into the classroom. In a series of visits, the company’s teaching artists incorporate curriculum– based exercises and discussions that work through unfamiliar vocabulary, a play’s socioeconomic context and the intricate relationships between characters. Nonverbal storytelling, debates, physical character work and other techniques let kids step into new roles and comprehend important themes and conflicts from various perspectives. These classroom exercises provide a modern “translation” of the work to which students can relate. At the end of the program, kids’ creativity can shine when the class produces its adaptation of the play being studied. In addition to Shakespeare titles, Lan-

tern educators work with modern plays such as To Kill a Mockingbird. “Students will come out of the program with valuable skills such as confidence in public speaking and the ability to collaborate with others to create ideas and to convey them clearly to an audience,” says Craig Getting, Lantern’s director of education. He says the company’s unique teaching method is known to pique artistic interest in students and inspire the creation of drama clubs, leaving an impression on the school that lasts well beyond Lantern’s residency.
Basic bard
For teachers who prefer original, no–frills Shakespeare, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey keeps their performances simple and traditional by using The Bard’s exact language. “We believe that Shakespeare is accessible to everyone when presented by a group of skilled actors,” says Doug West, associate director of education. The company’s custom residency program, designed for grades 4-8, incorporates acting, movement and speech activities as students read through original Shakespeare scenes. “We hope to leave students with a sense of empowerment and ownership of Shakespeare, rather than fear and intimidation,” says West. The company offers companion study guides for its performances as well as discussions after each show. Students can also participate in workshops, described as “challenging and fun.”
Authentic experience
The Delaware Theatre Company’s student matinee program includes a pre-performance visit to the school. The visit prepares students for a play at the company’s Wilmington theater. Students become familiarized with the play, acting out some of the scenes themselves as they discover important themes and discuss the author’s meaning. They learn how the play was produced and even receive tips on how to be good audience members. The company provides study guides for each production. These include a synopsis of the play, teachable themes and topics as well as classroom activities. After the performance, students meet the cast in a question-and–answer session. These student matinees “expose students to theater as it should be experienced — with authenticity,” says Charles Conway, the Delaware Theatre Company’s education director. “With years of experience, we understand what teachers go through to include theater in their curriculum, and can provide what they need.”
Peyton Pflug is a MetroKids intern and a communications student at Temple University.
Teacher’s Note Students in grades 7-12 are invited to apply to be a Resident Playwright with Philadelphia Young Playwrights. If selected, students will receive mentorship, dedicated office space and a culminating reading of the student’s play in May. Deadline for applications is Sept. 22. Phillyyoungplaywrights.org Young writers in grades 8-12 can apply to join the Delaware Young Playwrights Festival. Students will compose original works and vie for the chance to work with a director and cast to bring their play to life in a performance by the Delaware Theatre Company. A DYPF kickoff workshop takes place Sept. 23. Delawaretheatre.org/young-playwrights-festival
