Having a lot of great options is wonderful, until you have to make a decision. Such is the case for many parents in the Delaware Valley trying to pick a school for their child. With so many high-quality institutions to choose from, how will you decide?

EDUCATION THAT

MATTERS.

You’ll find plenty of choices, descriptions and data in this Guide to Schools, but if you need to narrow the field, there are some broad categories of schools described on pp. 8, 10, 12, 14 that might be worth exploring more deeply.

Montessori schools Sometimes simple is the answer. Montessori schools believe that. “We believe that when an environment is set up appropriately, it can help a child develop independence, coordination, concentration and an internal sense of order, as well as support well-being and social and academic achievement,” says a Montessori teacher. Everything in a Montessori classroom has a place and a purpose. The Montessori approach to keeping a simple, uncluttered environment can work at home too. Progressive schools You might have seen a school that describes itself as progressive. Or heard people discuss a progressive approach to learning. But unless you attended a progressive school yourself, it might be hard to grasp what that means. We talked with leaders of several local progressive schools about what they see as setting them apart. For one thing, they are big on student experiences. Students take lots of field trips to see how lessons in the classroom play out in the world. They also are very big on “exhibitions” where students take on a topic that’s important to them, research it and put together a presentation. To learn more about how progressive schools view student learning as “active, not passive” go to Metrokids.com/progressiveschools

Religious schools Schools that have religion at their roots and core mission are one of the most common forms of independent school. Catholic, Christian, Jewish and Quaker schools are all easy to find in our area. But what if your family doesn’t practice a religion? Or if you are interested in a school that’s a different religion than your own? Many religious schools welcome families of all faiths. They respect their families’ decisions about religion. “We’re not here to make new Quakers,” an admissions director at Moorestown Friends School told us. We talked to families who send their kids to schools of different faiths. Learn how they made their decisions and how these schools accommodate them at Metrokids. com/religiousschools.

Cyber learning Everything’s going cyber. For more than 15 years, cyber schools have been able to offer Pennsylvania students the opportunity to take all of their classes online. Some of these are cyber-charter schools. Others are private cyber-academies. But recently some traditional high schools have begun to offer students an online option, either full time or for selected classes. Students with health issues can complete their education from home and still graduate from their local high school. Student athletes or students in work study might take just one or two online courses that they may have missed otherwise. In “blended” classes, a teacher guides students through the course and is available for consultation. We looked at what local schools offer students who want or need the flexibility to take some of their classes online. See how it works at Metrokids.com/cyberclasses

Inspiring Today’s Learners To Be Tomorrow’s Thinkers Most traditional classrooms resemble assembly-line factories. Parts don’t go together quite right? Too bad. There’s no slowing down or speeding up the assembly line, no design changes for those who don’t fit the mold. Since 1997 in Pennsylvania, schoolchildren have been empowered to step off of the classroom assembly line and discover new, more suitable ways to go to school. Serving K-12 students since 2000, the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, or PA Cyber, is one of the largest, most experienced, and most successful online public schools in the nation. Its online learning environments and personalized instructional methods connect Pennsylvania students with highly-qualified, state-certified teachers and rich academic content that is aligned to state standards. Instructional methods are matched to each student’s needs and learning style, from live online to blended and self-paced instruction. This flexible-but-focused model allows teachers to use a variety of strategies and curricula to create personalized education programs. PA Cyber empowers its students and families to become active participants in their own learning, and equips them with skills for the future. PA Cyber provides each student a laptop, printer, materials, and online connectivity free of charge. PA Cyber graduates can be found attending highly regarded universities, professional academies, and vocational schools. Creative and performing arts classes, STEM and gifted programs, school clubs and field trips enrich the experience. PA Cyber’s conveniently located offices provide a hub for administrative services, enrichment classes and orientation. Thinking about stepping off the classroom assembly line? CCA Delivers a School Option Families in the Philadelphia Area Have Been Searching For It can be a helpless feeling when your child comes home from school dreading going back the next day. Perhaps, the local school isn’t in the safest neighborhood; maybe the pace of learning is too fast or too slow, or the environment is unfriendly and creates anxiety in your child. You know your child deserves better, but you feel trapped in your neighborhood school and don’t know where to turn. Whatever your family’s situation, there is another option — an online public school, like Commonwealth Charter Academy (CCA). After learning the local school was not a great option, Tunisia and her family sacrificed a lot to send their children to private school in order to provide their kids with the best education possible. “The issues that we ran into specifically with my son, I just felt like he wasn’t getting the amount of information that he needed,” Tunisia said. “In a classroom full of 30-plus children, my son needed more one-on-one attention and he just wasn’t receiving that.” Tunisia, who lives in Philadelphia, started researching other education options for her children. She began looking into public cyber charter schools and had a friend with children enrolled at CCA. “Honestly, I chose CCA because my best friend had been educating her kids with CCA for five or six years,” Tunisia said. “She was doing an amazing job. Her kids were on the ball education-wise. I felt like they were so far ahead of other kids their age. She definitely encouraged me to move forward with that process.” Tunisia’s journey at CCA began with her son; he

started in fifth grade and was eager to give public cyber charter school a chance. When her daughter graduated eighth grade, she told Tunisia that she also wanted to go to CCA. “She had a safety concern with high schools and that kind of broke my heart honestly,” Tunisia said. “To hear a kid say that they’re concerned about their safety in a school environment is just heartbreaking. I need my kids to be in an environment where they can actually focus on their education and their learning. That’s paramount to me.” CCA provided Tunisia’s family with the one-on-one attention she was craving for her children. She liked that CCA’s live classroom sessions are available to her children and feels that CCA teachers do a great job communicating with parents. “The teachers reach out to the students on a weekly basis and, if necessary, they will spend a lot of one-on-one time with them. I think that’s amazing,” Tunisia said. Tunisia loves that her children can learn from the safety of her home and said she has seen her children thrive at CCA. “I’m thankful for CCA, and I’m an advocate. I believe that this school definitely does what it says it’s going to do for the families that it serves.” CCA is a public K through 12 cyber charter school available at no cost to Pennsylvania families. Coventry Christian School A Classical Christian Curriculum

699 N. Pleasantview Rd. Pottstown, PA 19464 610-326-3320 www.coventrychristian.com

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Fri., November 22 Fri., January 17 Fri., February 21 Fri., March 20

Jesus Christ should be the unifying core of a cohesive, integrated curriculum. “Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:17) Without Christ as the core, knowledge is not coherent, and students become frustrated, confused, or even worse, fragmented in their knowledge and schizophrenic in their living.

20

Guide to Schools

Coventry Christian School is a private classical, Christian school focused on training our students to think critically and speak winsomely. Our mission is to prepare our students to serve God by serving others and to help them become good citizens. We regard parents as our partner in teaching children to live God’s Word in their lives. This effort is integrated into every subject and experience at CCS; our chapel programs, extracurricular activities and social experiences are designed to nurture a school culture that effectively teaches children to produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Considered the grammar phase of development, the classical education model approaches preschool through sixth grade with programs revolving around the joyful acquisition of facts and details. Whether mathematics, reading or Latin, students learn the foundational skills and knowledge that will be the underpinnings of their Logic (middle school) and Rhetoric (high school) years. The Coventry Christian School Logic school (middle school) program seeks to inform and encourage the student, recognizing that students will move into a development stage in which they become more inquisitive, insightful and thoughtful. It is in these few years that students can learn to artfully and politely speak and begin to defend a viewpoint. The hallmark of the Coventry Christian School’s Logic school experience will reinforce loving one another unconditionally and honoring God by accepting one another’s differences. Students will graduate from the Logic program into the Rhetoric program, when they naturally become independent, critical thinkers and communicators. During these years, Coventry Christian students will be ready to contribute and act in the college preparatory environment of high school as mature young adults rooted in a Christian worldview, ethic and faith-based curiosity and anticipation of where God will lead them in college and careers that will make a difference for Christ.

Points of Pride: • 98% of graduates continue their education at 4 year colleges • A “House” program replacing grade specific homeroom and fostering a spirit of collaboration, teamwork, and mentorship • A robust STEM program including well equipped laboratories, aquaponics instruction, 3D printing program and greenhouse • Secondary retreats, including backpacking the Appalachian trail, promoting perseverance, service and camaraderie • School’s 85th percentile SAT score of 1367 (1600 scale) • Competitive league sports program beginning with 5th grade participation • Extensive arts program including musical and play productions, band, chorus and private instruction opportunities • Competitive array of honors and AP courses, as well as partnerships for college credit with Montgomery County Community College and The Kings College in NYC Grades: K–12 Coed

Gateway Lab School 7 Reasons Why Gateway Lab School May be Right for Your Unique Learner

To provide an individualized arts-based learning experience in a safe and nurturing environment using innovative approaches to equip students with the tools to achieve academic excellence and personal growth.

1. My child’s ability is not reflected in his/her academic performance. Unique learners can be challenged academically due to multiple obstacles they may face in the classroom. Many children retain information better through experiential (hands-on) learning. All of the teachers at Gateway are trained to evaluate what each student needs to realize their individual learning potential and implement a plan of action. 2. My child performs better in small group settings. The small class size enjoyed by students at Gateway provides an environment for teachers to get up close and personal with their students. 3. My child retains information better with “hands-on” learning. Gateway students are learning in an experiential way that helps to connect theory and application of the subject matter. This type of learning goes beyond rote memorization and helps students to use critical thinking skills that are necessary for the retention of information long term. 4. My child is socially awkward or shy and struggles making friends. Gateway Lab School uses the Responsive Classroom approach to incorporate the students’ social and emotional growth into their academic learning, stemming from the notion that children learn best through social interaction and when they are explicitly taught social and emotional skills along with their academic lessons. 5. My child needs focused intervention with reading and/or math. Strategies used by teachers at Gateway focus on helping each student fill in gaps that may exist in reading and/or math. Teachers track each student’s growth through regular progress monitoring and assessments. Intervention curriculum includes the Wilson Reading System®, and Failure Free Reading™. 6. My child has lost his/her motivation to attend school. When a unique learner begins to advance through elementary school there may be challenges with maintaining focus and attention that can cause them to fall behind. Our teachers employ the teaching methods that work for each of their students, while empowering the students to advocate for themselves, and articulate what they need to be successful. 7. My child is doing well academically but needs a lot of help maintaining focus and organization. The inability to maintain organization can undermine the academic progress of even the brightest student. Gateway teachers employ experiential (hands-on) lessons help to engage the student’s interest in the subject matter, while daily “brain breaks” provide time for movement in the classroom that re-energizes the body and brain. If you felt yourself nodding in agreement with any of these “reasons” for considering Gateway for your child, give us a call at 302-633-4091 or visit our website at www.gatewaylabschool.org for more information. Gateway is a public, tuition-free charter school open to Delaware students in grades 3-8, located in suburban Wilmington, DE. Newtown Friends School provides a dynamic curriculum through which students learn to think critically, collaborate peacefully, communicate effectively and lead with character and compassion. Rooted in Quaker values, the rigorous education at NFS instills the confidence and conviction to succeed in a changing world. At Newtown Friends School, we believe how students learn is as important as what they learn. We focus on providing our students with the skills they will need to learn and adapt to a rapidly changing world where traditional models of education have become obsolete. Our students are life-long learners and leaders who act and speak with confidence and conviction. They apply critical thinking and creativity to solve problems. The school is a leader in outcomes-based education as demonstrated by students’: • High scores on educational achievement assessments. Although we do not “teach to the test” our students achieve scores that are higher than the average for students at independent schools. • Preparation for the most selective high schools and universities in the country with an emphasis on the best fit for the student. • Service to their communities and the world. • Career success later in life. These outcomes are achieved through the school’s 8:1 student-tofaculty ratio, which gives our experienced teachers the opportunity to understand and care about your child. With an appreciation of your child’s unique capabilities, personality, passions and goals, teachers can focus on the areas that will benefit your child the most. As a Friends School, students, faculty and staff thrive in an environment that emphasizes the importance of respect for the individual, integrity, equality, social justice, simplicity, peace, community, collaboration, and environmental stewardship. We believe this allows students to become well-rounded individuals who “do well and do good” throughout their lives. The school embraces students from all religious backgrounds, races, and nationalities, and believes exposure to a wide variety of ideas and perspectives is critically important to all students’ development.

Our faculty strives to bring out each student’s individuality, working to develop creative thinkers, problem solvers, peacemakers, and humanitarians who will contribute responsive and responsible leadership throughout their lives. Quaker principles and practice guide our school. With excellence as our standard, we challenge students in a vigorous program of academics, arts and athletics. We inspire students to be thinkers, collaborators, innovators and leaders.

36

Guide to Schools

Penn Charter integrates the power of arts and athletics into a vigorous academic experience that cultivates strong, creative and resilient young people who are ready to embrace new opportunities. “These are students who will take on the world,” Head of School Darryl J. Ford told a gathering of parents. “They are capable of wrestling with great ideas, resolving impossible problems, discovering the undiscovered.” “Educating students to live lives that make a difference,” the school’s vision statement, reflects Penn Charter’s roots in Quaker values and education. Established in 1689 by Philadelphia Friends and William Penn, the school was among the first to offer education to people of different religions (1689), financial aid (1701), education for girls (1754) and education for all races (1770). Today, Penn Charter supports this history of access with a $9 million financial aid budget. The school’s endowment, one of the largest among independent schools, provides financial stability and supports a 47-acre campus with outstanding facilities; successful college counseling; stellar teachers and a college preparatory program with a national reputation for excellence. IdeaLabs — the latest addition to a network of lab and activity spaces that include a woodshop in Lower School, science labs and art studios, outdoor learning spaces and a music lab — exemplify Penn Charter’s longstanding commitment to innovation. More than a makerspace, IdeaLabs offer a maker lab, a media lab and a creative lab — a trio designed to develop the core competencies of creation, communication and collaboration. A classic education, renewed and refined.

Wilmington Montessori School Your Child: Known, Affirmed and Prepared for Any Challenge.

1400 Harvey Road Wilmington, DE 19810 302-475-0555 admissions@wmsde.org www.wmsde.org

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Thurs., October 10 • 9:30am Thurs., October 10 • 5pm Sat., November 2 • 10am Wilmington Montessori School is a collaborative learning community rooted in Montessori principles, inspiring the joyful discovery of self and a passion for learning and independent thinking. We empower children to be knowledgeable and responsible contributors to the global community.

Since 1964, Wilmington Montessori School has remained committed to the evidence-based educational methods Maria Montessori developed during the early 20th century. Today those core principles — engaging children in an environment of discovery, critical thinking and problem-solving to create passionate learners — continue to drive WMS. Our spacious facilities, 25-acre campus, and close-knit community provide a safe and inclusive environment for joyful discovery and hands-on learning. Teachers focus on the development of the whole child, including academic, social and personal growth, and accept each child for who he or she is as a learner. Parents are active partners in the education of their children. A WMS education prepares students for success in high school and beyond. While technology did not exist when Dr. Montessori was alive, it has become an integral part of our curriculum at the elementary and middle-school levels. At WMS, technology is not a substitute for instruction from teachers and hands-on work; it is integrated into the curriculum, used for creative projects, research, communication and more. Likewise, the concept of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education has only emerged during the past decade, but the integration of these areas of the curriculum aligns perfectly with the Montessori philosophy. WMS is home to three Maker Studios in which students use hands-on materials to discover, build, investigate, create and learn. Visit us to find out how WMS will help your child become a capable, compassionate and responsible global citizen. Experience the WMS difference.

Points of Pride: • 1:1 iPad program for students in grades 4 & up; 2:1 iPad program for grades 1-3 • Maker Studios (S.T.E.A.M. - Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) for each age level • Focus on arts integration • 25-acre campus • Outdoor classroom • 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School • Expeditionary learning program in middle school Grades: 12mos.–8th gr. Inspiring Confident, Compassionate Leaders

Since 1856, the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur has educated, empowered, and inspired young women for a lifetime of compassionate leadership and service. Beginning in the sixth grade, every aspect of a Notre Dame education builds the academic skills, personal abilities, and spiritual foundation needed to excel in college and beyond. While challenging courses mark the Academy’s academic rigor, Notre Dame is a caring, spiritual community, guided by the faith tradition of the Catholic Church, the service of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and the school’s Honor Code.

• The Academy’s new, state-of-the-art Riley Center for STEM Education supports a comprehensive, STEMbased science curriculum; independent scientific research; and development of critical thinking and communication skills. • Students in all grades receive an Apple MacBook Air laptop to integrate technology with 21st century learning. • Notre Dame’s Center for Global Leadership links students to an international community of sister schools for global learning opportunities and exchanges. • A progressive study of World Languages begins in grade six with a survey of French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish and continues through Advanced Placement. • Dance, fine and performing arts, music, athletics, campus ministry, and activity clubs give every student the opportunity to explore her unique gifts. How will Notre Dame inspire your daughter? Visit campus for personal tour or attend our Open House on Sunday, September 29 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. For more information, visit ndapa.org/openhouse.
