Welcome to the Guide to Schools & Summer Programs of the Delaware Valley The web-connected world is filled with choices at your fingertips. Sometimes that’s not helpful when you’re trying to make a decision as important as choosing a school or camp for your child. How do you narrow your choices to the ones that will best fit your family? We at MetroKids have been helping parents make these kinds of decisions for 30 years through our monthly magazine, website and annual guides like this, our Guide to Schools and Summer Programs of the Delaware Valley. It is a curated collection of some of the area’s top independent schools along with a directory of camps, from residential to day programs and those that specialize in hosting children with special needs. You can find even more schools and camps, as well as more details on the programs listed here, on our searchable database at MetroKids.com/EducationGuide and MetroKids.com/Camps.

A Camp Primer Summer camps range from a few hours nearby to international travel. Here’s a rundown of your options and how to find a camp right for your family. By Cheryl Maguire With so many choices it can be overwhelming to figure out what type of camp would be a good fit for your child. Here’s a primer on the types of camps available to help you narrow your choices.

looking into. It may be a good way to introduce the arts, since many of these camps are for just one week.

EDUCATIONAL

A traditional day camp is six hours (half-day options may be available) and offers a variety of activities such as sports, swimming, art and music. These camps are located at YMCAs, public schools, or private settings. (Check out MetroKids.com/DayCamp for local camps.) Is this a good fit? Most of the activities are outside so if your child loves the outdoors and sports or team-building activities, this is a good choice. Since the activities are varied this would also be a good fit for a child that likes variety.

An educational camp focuses on learning a new skill or subject matter. Since it is camp and not school, these types of camps tend to be hands-on with an emphasis on fun. (At MetroKids.com/Camps you can search for camps that specialize in academics generally or specifically in areas such as STEM.) Is this a good fit? If your child is curious and always asking questions about how/why things work, this may be a good match for her. If a child is interested in learning a new skill such as computer programming or speaking Spanish some educational camps offer that as well.

SPORTS

SLEEPAWAY

DAY CAMP

Specialty sports camps usually are one sport such as baseball or soccer that the child plays for 3 or 6 hours. There may be an option for tennis, golf, surfing or sailing camp. This type of camp is typically owned by private organizations although some towns may run sports camps. (Find a variety of sports camps at MetroKids.com/ SportsCamp) Is this a good fit? If your child loves a specific sport and would like to improve skills, this would be a great option. It could even be a way for your child to try a new sport, such as surfing, that might be new to her.

Overnight camp is when your child lives at the camp for a week or longer. These camps tend to offer options such as sailing, boating, archery, horseback riding and other activities that may not be available close to your home. (Go to MetroKids.com/ResidentialCamp to find options from across the state and country.) Is this a good fit? An overnight camp gives your child the chance to meet other kids from different states and countries. There is also more time to do activities and foster independence compared to traditional day camps.

ART/MUSICAL THEATER

There are two types of travel camps. One type is when your child goes on day trips and the other, sometimes referred to as “teen tours,” is when she travels with a group for an extended period, usually a few weeks or a month. Is this a good fit? Some of these camps travel to places by plane so it would give your child the chance to travel to a place that you might not have gone as a family. If your child enjoys experiencing new destinations, then this would be a great fit for him.

Specialty art or musical theater camps focus solely on the arts. Musical theater camps typically showcase a production such as Beauty and the Beast. At an art camp a child would use a variety of art forms, like painting or drawing. (Go to MetroKids.com/Camps, where you can sort camps by arts or theater and drama, as well as by location.) Is this a good fit? Is your child creative and prefers the indoors? Then these types of camps would be worth

Mid-Year Elementary School Blues How to Keep Kids Motivated Throughout the School Year

By Sarah Lyons The thrill of winter break is in the rear view and the excitement of a new school year has worn off. This is when kids start to drag their feet a little more on school mornings. How do you keep them motivated to finish the last months of the school year with gusto?

Set goals

It’s important to let your child know you have high expectations for her throughout the year, not just the first semester. Work with your child to set goals for success and reward her for meeting her goals. Some kids may need an academic goal, while others might need to strive for punctuality or timeliness with assignments. Work with your child’s teacher to devise a set of relevant goals specific to your child. Rewards could include a family outing, extra screen time or the choice of a special toy.

Stay positive

A positive attitude can go a long way for both parents and kids. Focus on the joys of scholastic enrichment, time with friends and upcoming events to remind your child that school is still as fun as it was back in August. Your child will pick up on your upbeat attitude and share it.

Show interest

When your child returns home from school, ask her how she spent her time. Ask about her friends and the highs and lows of the day. Listen attentively and ask ques-

Guide to Schools & Summer Programs

tions. When it is homework time, be available to help and answer questions. Children mirror parents’ engagement, so if you are interested in the goings-on at school, your kids will be, too.

Get involved

Kids who are involved in school activities tend to be more excited about school. Encourage your child to join clubs and/or after-school activities so that he or she can spend time with friends who have similar interests. Parents can also get involved at the school to break up the mid-year blues. When parents volunteer at the school, it shows your child that his role as a student is valued. Check with your school to see what volunteer opportunities are available.

Continue healthy habits

Encourage your child to get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast and focus on good study habits. An after-school routine to complete homework and chores will help your child fall into the school schedule. Set aside time for free play as well. Host a play date, have a movie night, go to the park if weather allows or schedule time for fun and relaxation so kids don’t get too bored with their routine. If the mid-year blues still get to your child, don’t hesitate to contact his or her teacher to discuss a plan to get your child back on track. Soon enough, the days will get longer, the temperatures warmer and school will be out for summer once again.

Guide to Schools & Summer Programs

Look closely into a Kimberton classroom. What happens in each of our classrooms matters. Every learning space is thoughtfully and intentionally designed for the needs of the students. Each curriculum is crafted and interwoven to address the academic, physical and social emotional developmental needs of a child when they are ready to embrace and embody them. Our unique approach to education encourages deep thinking and exploration; allows for true engagement and development of creativity, inner strength, responsibility and curiosity, and brings the work of the head and heart into the hands with confidence and purpose. A Kimberton education looks different because it is different. Everything we do at Kimberton Waldorf School matters because it supports healthy development of children and promotes the foundation for our graduates to become creative and capable individuals, ready to lead meaningful lives in a complex world. Engage your child through an approach to learning that integrates academics with hands-on, experiential activities. Students are provided with opportunities to take risks, think imaginatively, and embrace new opportunities with initiative, creativity, and resilience. By engaging all of the senses, students embody their work through movement and the arts; they refine their observational skills through in-depth examination and assessment; they experience the beauty and importance of stewardship through their studies of the natural world; they develop compassion and responsibility through community service projects. We develop analytical thinkers with imaginative minds capable of producing life-changing ideas. Our students build capacities and skills of creativity, resourcefulness, collaboration, perseverance, integrity, and ethical understanding. How we teach this matters. Every aspect of Waldorf education is intentional and planned. Why we teach this way matters. At each stage of child development, students are challenged, capacities are built, foundations are set, and opportunities are given. When we teach matters. True learning is a process of discovery that engages the whole human being. Instead of passively receiving information, Waldorf students are involved in a dynamic process of exploration and experience, both of the world and of themselves. This is EDUCATION THAT MATTERS.

Guide to Schools & Summer Programs

Newtown Friends School provides a dynamic curriculum through which students learn to think critically, collaborate peacefully, communicate effectively and lead with character and compassion. Rooted in Quaker values, the rigorous education at NFS instills the confidence and conviction to succeed in a changing world. At Newtown Friends School, we believe how students learn is as important as what they learn. We focus on providing our students with the skills they will need to learn and adapt to a rapidly changing world where traditional models of education have become obsolete. Our students are life-long learners and leaders who act and speak with confidence and conviction. They apply critical thinking and creativity to solve problems. The school is a leader in outcomes-based education as demonstrated by students’: • High scores on educational achievement assessments. Although we do not “teach to the test” our students achieve scores that are higher than the average for students at independent schools. • Preparation for the most selective high schools and universities in the country with an emphasis on the best fit for the student. • Service to their communities and the world. • Career success later in life. These outcomes are achieved through the school’s 8:1 student-tofaculty ratio, which gives our experienced teachers the opportunity to understand and care about your child. With an appreciation of your child’s unique capabilities, personality, passions and goals, teachers can focus on the areas that will benefit your child the most. As a Friends School, students, faculty and staff thrive in an environment that emphasizes the importance of respect for the individual, integrity, equality, social justice, simplicity, peace, community, collaboration and environmental stewardship. We believe this allows students to become well-rounded individuals who “do well and do good” throughout their lives. The school embraces students from all religious backgrounds, races and nationalities, and believes exposure to a wide variety of ideas and perspectives is critically important to all students’ development.

Guide to Schools & Summer Programs

Since 1964, Wilmington Montessori School has remained committed to the evidence-based educational methods Maria Montessori developed during the early 20th century. Today those core principles — engaging children in an environment of discovery, critical thinking and problem-solving to create passionate learners — continue to drive WMS. Our spacious facilities, 25-acre campus, and close-knit community provide a safe and inclusive environment for joyful discovery and hands-on learning. Teachers focus on the development of the whole child, including academic, social and personal growth, and accept each child for who he or she is as a learner. Parents are active partners in the education of their children. A WMS education prepares students for success in high school and beyond. While technology did not exist when Dr. Montessori was alive, it has become an integral part of our curriculum at the elementary and middle-school levels. At WMS, technology is not a substitute for instruction from teachers and hands-on work; it is integrated into the curriculum, used for creative projects, research, communication and more. Likewise, the concept of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education has only emerged during the past decade, but the integration of these areas of the curriculum aligns perfectly with the Montessori philosophy. WMS is home to three Maker Studios in which students use hands-on materials to discover, build, investigate, create and learn. Visit us to find out how WMS will help your child become a capable, compassionate and responsible global citizen. Experience the WMS difference.

Points of Pride: • 1:1 iPad program for students in grades 4 & up; 2:1 iPad program for grades 1-3 • Maker Studios (S.T.E.A.M. - Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) for each age level • Focus on arts integration • 25-acre campus • Outdoor classroom • 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School • Expeditionary learning program in middle school Grades: 12mos.–8th gr. Guide to Schools & Summer Programs

Inspiring Confident, Compassionate Leaders • •

• Since 1856, the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur has educated, empowered, and inspired young women for a lifetime of compassionate leadership and service. Beginning in the sixth grade, every aspect of a Notre Dame education builds the academic skills, personal abilities, and spiritual foundation needed to excel in college and beyond. While challenging courses mark the Academy’s academic rigor, Notre Dame is a caring, spiritual community, guided by the faith tradition of the Catholic Church, the service of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and the school’s Honor Code. •

The Academy’s new, state-of-the-art Riley Center for STEM Education supports a comprehensive,

STEM-based science curriculum; independent scientific research; and development of critical thinking and communication skills. Students in all grades receive an Apple MacBook Air laptop to integrate technology with 21st century learning. Notre Dame’s Center for Global Leadership links students to an international community of sister schools for global learning opportunities and exchanges. A progressive study of World Languages begins in grade six with a survey of French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish and continues through Advanced Placement. Dance, fine and performing arts, music, athletics, campus ministry, and activity clubs give every student the opportunity to explore her unique gifts.
