New info Most months, this page is the section of info that is most difficult to produce. Why? Well, this is

where we like to point out some of the special MLS events of the current month and there are usually so many, picking just a few on which to cast the spotlight is tough.

For instance, on April 19 our libraries have 23 programs and events scheduled. That’s just one day— and it’s a Tuesday!

And the variety of the events is staggering. From the fun of belly dancing lessons at Midwest City

Library on alternating Mondays to the Oklahoma Herpetological Society’s display of live snakes at

Warr Acres Library on April 28 to the seriousness of the sexual abuse awareness workshop at Edmond Library on April 16 (and several other libraries throughout the month), we’ve got lots to choose from. Browse around in our Calendar of Events and see for yourself.

Hey, if you think we have a lot going on now, just wait until Summer at the Library starts in June!

From El Reno to Broadway to Hollywood:

On the Rhodes to Success by Larry Johnson

To hear actors tell it, the worst thing that can befall individuals of their craft is to be typecast – forever stymied from enriching the world with their blessed talent. Frankly, I’m glad we were spared the screwball comedies of Elizabeth Taylor, Laurence Olivier as the hard-boiled film noir detective and, please Lord, find a type for Gwyneth Paltrow so she can put her country music career to bed. Still, typecasting was an integral part of the studio system during the golden era of the silver screen and Oklahoma City’s Erik Rhodes found himself in just such a predicament, locked into playing suave but agitated Italians. 4 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2011

Official Book Club Selection by Kathy Griffin This book could easily be titled “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.” It’s a candid look at life in the celebrity world when you’re not on the A-list. More than that, however, it’s an account of Griffin’s personal life and how it has shaped the person she is today. Griffin talks about her Irish-Catholic upbringing in Chicago suburbs, how she began her obsession with pop culture, her late brother, whom she condemns as a child molester, plastic surgery nightmares, the death of her father and the painful breakup of her marriage to a money-filching husband. Griffin also recounts some very funny celebrity anecdotes and her early days starting out in Los Angeles with the likes of Lisa Kudrow, Janeane Garofalo, Margaret Cho, ex-boyfriends Jack Black and Quentin Tarantino, and former

reviewed by Angela Thornton acting student Mariska Hargitay of Law and Order fame. Eventually making a name for herself through guest appearances on Seinfeld and E.R. and her big break with Suddenly Susan, Griffin still struggles to keep her footing in the fickle world of Hollywood. Griffin has written a book that is touching and irreverent, and even if you are not a fan, this is a great peek behind the celebrity curtain at the many levels of fame in Hollywood. Kathy Griffin has also read an abridged version of her memoir as an Audiobook, and this title is also available as an Adobe EPUB eBook. Angela Thornton is the manager at the Edmond Library. Beautiful Jim Key: The Lost History of a Horse and a Man by Mim Eichler Rivas “That he appeared to have an I.Q. equivalent to that of a twelve-year-old human and to have mastered academics equivalent to a sixth-grade level was essential in his ability to open and change the public mind.” – Author’s note. In 1897, Jim Key was a celebrity. Sought out by such people as Alice Roosevelt, Booker T. Washington and President McKinley, Jim performed for crowds in the thousands. He had them eating out of his hands … or, to be more precise, his hooves. Jim Key was a horse, you see. He belonged to Dr. William Key, an ex-slave and self-taught vet with a particular affinity for animals and an uncanny ability to understand them. He was called a horse whisperer in the days when those with that particular moniker were looked upon with suspicion. He adhered to a philosophy of kindness and patience. His partnership with a mahogany bay horse gave Dr. Key the chance to showcase what 6 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2011

reviewed by Jana Hausburg could be accomplished with love, not with a riding crop. It was a considerable accomplishment. Beautiful Jim Key, the name given to him by the press, could do incredible things: count, spell, read, tell time, give change, sort and file mail, even impersonate Teddy Roosevelt’s signature grin. Skeptics did what they could to prove that he was a fake and expose Dr. Key’s trickery. But they never could. Instead, after a performance and meeting with the duo, many came away considerably changed. It gave people pause when hearing the message that animals had the ability to feel, to reason, to love, and that they deserved to be treated with respect and kindness. It’s a story of the value of nonviolence and tolerance often overlooked in today’s age of terror, and a welcome respite. Jana Hausburg is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is also the author of It Wasn’t Much.

Jacob’s Ladder by Jackie Lynn

reviewed by Phyllis Davidson

In this second installment in the Shady Grove mystery series, Rose Franklin has been living in an RV park beside the Mississippi River for six months. She has made new friends and is working in the park office. When Rose discovers a dead man inside his trailer, she also finds a beautiful, Native American bracelet in the grass, but she doesn’t immediately turn it over to the sheriff. Before she can decide what to do with it, her exhusband and his trophy wife show up in a long, gold Cadillac to tell her she needs to go back home to North Carolina and allow her abusive father to make his peace with her before he dies. Rose decides to return the bracelet to the place where she found it in hopes the sheriff will discover

it. When she makes her midnight visit to plant it, she runs into some bad guys and ends up trailing them west on I-40 right into Oklahoma. When Rose meets the dead man’s family, she is impressed with their unselfish resolve to honor family and tribal obligations. Their example helps her decide what to do about her father. It would be better to paddle through the first episode, Down By The Riverside, before climbing Jacob’s Ladder. Then you’ll be ready to swing right into the third installment, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.

Phyllis Davidson is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is the editor of a family newsletter, teaches genealogy classes to customers at the library, and delves into her own family history outside the library walls.

Call Me Irresistible by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Lucy Jorik could almost be American Royalty since her mother is a former president of the United States of America. Ted Beaudine is the mayor and favoreite son of Wynette, Texas. They are getting married. Maid of honor Meg Koranda isn’t prepared for her first view of Ted at the wedding rehearsal. With his golden tiger quartz eyes, dark brown hair and movie star looks he is irresistible to women, and Meg is no exception. The clincher is the way he gives a woman his undivided attention and makes her feel special. In spite of all this, Meg doesn’t think Ted is good enough for Lucy and convinces Lucy to leave him at the altar. The wedding is called off, and all of the guests leave town. Everyone except Meg who is flat broke and can’t pay her hotel bill. She has to stay and work as a maid at the hotel to pay off her debt. Everyone

Holding down a job, even as a maid, makes her feel like her life has purpose. A contemporary romance by Phillips is always a delight to read and this one is no exception. It is fun to see old friends from other Phillips novels again, but this novel can be enjoyed without reading any of her others. This title is also available as an OverDrive WMA Audiobook, an Adobe EPUB eBook, a compact disc Audiobook, and in large print. Ruby Soutiere has the best job ever, selecting the adult fiction for the Metropolitan Library System. Mildred Pierce by James M. Cain America is currently re-discovering James M. Cain’s 1941 masterpiece Mildred Pierce through the new mini-series on HBO. Fans of old movies may remember the first adaptation of the novel, starring Joan Crawford, in 1945. If you’ve seen the Crawford film—and MLS owns it on DVD—the book will come as quite a surprise. The movie is a murder mystery while the book is a psychological study of a mother/daughter relationship that would have given Freud the screaming whimwhams, but without the murder. Set in Southern California during the 1930s, the book chronicles the “grass widow” Mildred as she raises two kids, one of whom is pure hell on the hoof. As it was in his previous bestsellers The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity, Cain’s 8 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2011

What else can you expect from a novel that ends with one character saying to another, “Let’s get stinko”? Cain’s novels have never completely dropped from view, but they experienced a revival when noir became popular again about 20 years ago. Take a look at Mildred Pierce and you’ll see why Cain has been called “the poet of the hard-boiled school of the American novel.” This title is also available as an Adobe EPUB eBook and as an OverDrive MP3 Audiobook Doug Bentin also reviews movies for The Oklahoma Gazette.

Genealogy Databases From MLS

oltaire once wrote that if you live a good life, you have no need of ancestors. But even if you don’t need them, sometimes it’s fun to know who they are—and that’s where your Metropolitan Library System can help. Go to our web site at www.metrolibrary.org and click on “Databases” at the top of the screen. This takes you to another screen that lists 26 subject headings under which you can search for individual databases. Click on “Genealogy.” Now you’re ready to begin a serious ancestor hunt. One of the databases is called “Footnote.” This one contains over 70 million historical documents that relate to the Civil War, the Holocaust, World War II, Vietnam, Black History, Native American history, newspaper archives and the U.S. Census. Enter the name of the person about whom you want more information and the website can search everything from Homestead Records in Nebraska to the government’s exploration of UFO sightings, Project Blue Book. (You may not want to find a relative’s name in Project Blue Book, but it does contain information about a case in Oklahoma City on Sept. 9, 1962, so you never know.) The “Heritage Quest Online” site can search the Census,

over 28,000 family and local histories, Revolutionary War records, the Freedman’s Bank, which was founded to serve primarily African Americans, and many other sources. “Digital Sanborn Maps” contains over 660,000 maps that were originally created to help insurance companies assess the risks associated with insuring particular towns and cities. MLS has access to maps of Oklahoma cities only. The database I found easiest to use and most useful for just a quick look was “Ancestry.com.” I knew my maternal grandparents came to America from Australia in the early 1930s, but a fast search informed me that they arrived in San Francisco on October 24, 1930, on a ship called the “Maunganui,” named, I assume, for Mt. Maunganui, the extinct volcano that overlooks one of the most popular surf beaches in New Zealand. Of course, if you have any trouble getting started with any of these databases, they all contain “Help” sections and the librarians at our Reference Desks will be glad to assist, too. It’s only fair that we issue a warning to anyone who’s thinking about exploring genealogy—what begins in idle curiosity can quickly become a habit—one you won’t want to break--and from there evolve into an obsession.

A Facelift for Southern Oaks When Southern Oaks Library opened its doors for the first time in 1975 it was state of the art. After 36 years, it’s time for a facelift and revitalization. he Southern Oaks Library is the southernmost location in MLS and one of the busiest. On a typical day, over 800 people visit Southern Oaks and check out around 1,800 items. Add to that figure the folks who drop by to read an out-of-town newspaper, attend an event, or log-on to one of the public access computers, and you can see why the Southern Oaks staff keeps hopping. Currently, the library is 16,693 square feet. After the renovation is complete in 2012, space will be expanded to 20,164 square feet, an increase of over 20 percent. The public restrooms will be replaced and their current area will be added to that of the meeting room. New meeting rooms and reading areas will be added to the north side of the building, and more space will be dedicated to public access computers, increasing the number available from 18 to 36. A new ceiling will be put in place, with a new fire protection sprinkler system. A more modern lighting system will be added and an improved and more efficient mechanical system will replace the old one. A new entrance to the parking lot is being planned on the north side of the site, and that will allow for expanded parking space. If you’re a regular user of the Southern Oaks Library, you needn’t worry about being without a library while all this construction is taking place. The current library will remain open through Sunday, April 3. Then beginning the next day, our Maintenance Department will join with SO staff and library volunteers to begin the move to the new temporary location at 2914 S.W. 59th Street. “It’ll take three weeks to move everything and complete some renovations at the temporary site before we can open it to the public on April 25,” said MLS Executive Director Donna Morris. “We have to put in new carpeting, fix up the restrooms, and do some painting before the temporary Southern Oaks will be ready for library customers. “Of course, this space is smaller than the current library, but at 12,500 square feet, there’s room to provide people with the services they’ve come to expect from MLS. It’ll be cozy,” Morris laughed, “but the terrific Southern Oaks staff can make it work.” The renovation project will take about a year to complete, so look for the new Southern Oaks Library to be ready to go in time for Summer at the Library, 2012.

For many fans, the 1931 version of Cimarron is the best of the bunch. It’s the first western to win the Oscar in the Best Picture category, but where was it filmed? Where else? On a ranch a few miles outside of Los Angeles. The movie was remade in 1960, and that time the production got a little closer to home—but it was still shot in Arizona. Debate still exists as to which movie presents the most laughable version of the Oklahoma landscape, and the contestants are the 1969 version of True Grit, which was filmed in Colorado, and Far and Away, shot in Montana. Montana? Really? Most of the state’s best-beloved film, Oklahoma! from 1955, was filmed on Hollywood sound stages, but the outdoor scenes were filmed in New Mexico. Close, but no cigar. Don’t despair, though. We’ve got two great claims to movie immortality. Did you know that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans got married in 1947 at the Flying L Ranch near Davis? They’d worked on the movie Home in Oklahoma there and loved the location. And our other claim? The horse that was Mr. Ed’s stand-in for still photos died in Oklahoma and is buried at Snodgrass Farm. Kids, ask your grandparents to tell you who Mr. Ed was. MLS owns DVD copies of all of the films mentioned in this article. Take a look.

Off the Beaten Path

. . . Discovering New Literary Treasures

Getting tired of a constant diet of best sellers and book club hype? Want to take a look at what librarians read? Here are two favorite books as selected by MLS staff. Philbrick, Nathaniel. In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. 910.452/P545i With the arrival of Spring it’s time to consider turning your reading eye toward tales of adventure, and what’s more adventurous than the sea? This book tells the yarn of the Essex, which left port in 1819 and was sunk by a sperm whale in an episode that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick. Here’s the fact that became the fiction.

Souhami, Diana. Selkirk’s Island: The True and Strange Adventures of the Real Robinson Crusoe. 996.18/SO721s Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is another famous novel of adventure at sea—on a desert island, anyway—and here are the facts behind that well-loved fiction. Selkirk was convinced that the ship he sailed on was unseaworthy so he was left ashore alone when it sailed off—and sank. He lived alone before being rescued four years later.
