It’s August in Oklahoma, where the sun beats down on the plains, and the locusts screech in the trees, a month when the lazy days of summer morph into the back-to-school prep and the heat and humidity get serious. August is the month after our online summer reading program and we hope you continue the tradition of

reading for 20 minutes a day. Check out our feature on book clubs to find one that is the perfect fit for you, and keep on reading.

You can also read about two distinguished Oklahoman WWII Veterans who blazed a trail in the central Pacific. Check out our Oklahoma Images article to see the Top Gun connection.

And finally, if you have been to our website lately you probably noticed some new and improved features. Read all about the new calendar and stay tuned for big website changes coming in September!

The European summer of 1944 was one of hope as Allied armies left the Normandy beaches on D-Day headed for the liberation of Paris and the Russian army made sweeping gains in the east. Meanwhile in the Pacific, Oklahoma took on the Japanese Empire.

oseph J. Clark was born in Indian Territory in 1893, just the next farm over from Will Rogers’ family farm. A Cherokee, he lived an adventurous youth in the still wild country and he brought that sense of adventure with him as a plebe in the United States Naval Academy in 1913. One day a clowning classmate slapped him on the back and called him “The Right Reverend J. Jonathan Jockey Clark!” The nickname stuck in the form of “Jocko.” Jocko graduated from the Academy in 1917 – the first Native American ever to do so – and quickly jumped into combat during Jocko Clark the Atlantic battles of World War I. At war’s end, he joined the small but influential group of naval aviators who saw combined sea-air forces as crucial to the extension of American power around the globe. Marc Mitscher (one of the first Oklahomans to graduate from Annapolis five years earlier) was at the fore of naval aviation. The son of Oklahoma City mayor Oscar Mitscher, Marc served aboard the first American ship to carry an airplane and took part in several naval air firsts, including a transatlantic crossing in 1919. Mitscher and Jocko would make naval history together in the Pacific nearly 30 years later. By 1944, Admiral Mitscher was the foremost tactical carrier commander in the Navy. He was present at notable naval battles like Midway, but now his ships were tasked with striking the heart of Japan’s empire. As he prepared operations in the Central Pacific he was joined by Jocko Clark. Jocko was assigned to Mitscher’s task force and brought his usual adventurousness to the command of the carrier USS Hornet. In June Mitscher and Jocko took part in the Battle of the

Philippine Sea – also known as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot because of the great number of losses to Japanese air and naval forces. Over the next two months, July and August 1944, Jocko James Doolittle (left) and Marc Mitscher (right) made so many raids on the Bonin Islands – part of the Japanese home islands – naval cartographers began labeling maps Jocko Jima Retto or Clark Island Group. Jocko’s planes were tasked with bombarding the Bonins (Iwo, Chichi, Haha, and Muko Jima) to prepare for infantry landings. They did such a thorough job, Jocko’s pilots printed up stock certificates for a fictional company – Jocko Jima Development Company – offering “choice locations of all types…500 miles from Downtown Tokyo.” They gave Mitscher certificate No. 1 and Jocko Clark No. 2. Both men earned a chestful of medals, each had ships named for them, and Mitscher has the distinction of having a street and the airfield named for him at Naval Air Station Miramar – or Top Gun. Not too bad for a couple of boys who grew up in a landlocked territory. Larry “Buddy” Johnson has been with MLS since 1998. Not only a librarian at the Downtown Library, he is the brilliant mind behind the Oklahoma Images database which is a collection of pictures and essays that illustrate the history of central Oklahoma.

MYSTERY/ CRO ON THE SHELF

Mermaid: a memoir of resilience by Eileen Cronin “You don’t have legs,” she said, “because baby Jesus chose you to carry the cross!” Stories of resilience are common now, and it is a characteristic often noted as desirable for those children who grow into successful adults. The child who overcomes birth defects, autism, eating disorders, or abusive parents – these tales all make for a compelling read. Eileen Cronin was born with legs that ended at the knee, “one above and one below.” “(I-lean!” the kids would mock.) To keep up with her ten brothers and sisters, she “squiddled,” a made-up word for an action that was a cross between crawling and running on her knees. Later, Eileen’s mother Joy would have the little girl fitted for a pair of artificial limbs at a time when most orthopedic textbooks would claim it impossible for someone to be ambulatory on two prostheses. Despite the pain and humiliation, Eileen was able to walk into her kindergarten classroom. Although Eileen’s determination to be treated like

reviewed by Jana Hausberg everyone else makes the story interesting enough, what caught hold of me was the tense relationship between mother and child. The cause of Eileen’s birth defect, according to her mother, was “God’s will.” She stubbornly refused to believe anything else, even when learning about the effects of thalidomide. When pressed, Eileen’s mother remembered a stewardess giving her something to calm her nerves on a plane trip to Germany. Taken during Eileen’s 10th week of development, the thalidomide blocked the development of her legs. The tense relationship that existed between Eileen and Joy is a testament to the power of denial. Though Joy could never admit it openly, during a phone call Eileen realizes her mother “had been providing clues to the truth all along. For instance, she’d always made a point of saying that she was pregnant with me on her trip to Germany … maybe she’d wanted me to figure it out.” With her incredible book knowledge and sharply-honed survivor skills, Jana Hausburg is humanity’s best chance in a zombie apocalypse. She is also the manager at the Capitol Hill Library.

Midwinter Blood By Marcus Sedgwick Take a look at Midwinter Blood (I predict we will see it on the big screen someday). Sedgwick masterfully crafts these seven short stories together. They are adventure plus intrigue plus travel, though perhaps not the kind of travel you may be expecting. Beginning in the year 2073, the stories regress to time unknown and all take place on an island in the northern interior called Blessed. Here on Blessed the air is different, the sky seems bluer, people are kind and welcoming and almost familiar, thinks the stranger. He finds there is calmness in this new place as he begins to forget his worries until he is lost to

reviewed by Kelley Riha the island breeze and the local tea. His gadgets disappear unnoticed as time and sanity slip away under the Flower Moon. Not to spoil the read for you, know that Sedgwick paints a mysterious web around his characters in all seven tales that are sure to keep you drawn in to the very end… whatever your age. Kelley Riha is Community Information Coordinator in the MLS Outreach Dept. She is a long-time performer for children and reviews books written for the youngest readers.

Lightening Bolt Pearl Jam Twenty-two years after they first shook their fists at corporate rock, Pearl Jam released their tenth album, Lightning Bolt, which flashed to #1 on the charts in its first week. With an evolved sound, this album recaptures the same vibe that 90s kids loved and can now share with their kids, a new generation of PJ fans. Radio releases, Mind Your Manners and Sirens represent their trademark sound. Another worthy song is title track, Lighting Bolt. Sleeping By Myself, a recycle from singer Eddie Vedder’s Ukulele Songs, features wistful vocals and lonely guitar chords. You get the energetic, slightly angry rock, paired with the melancholy yet melodic wailing that he is so good at. By the way, you did read that right,

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker Yes, I know, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind sounds like just another one of the thousands of get-rich-quick books, and yes, the author is probably trying to get you to attend one of his $2,000 seminars, and yes, the topic of money is over-emphasized already – doubtless you aren’t even considering reading this book. But do, because this one really is different. Eker actually acknowledges that money isn’t the end-all, be-all. Oh, he likes money all right, but more than that, he likes the freedom that comes from not living paycheck to paycheck. The author is very much about living below our means, and I mean way below: as much as fifty percent below! Along the way, general beliefs are exposed as harmful, such as money doesn’t buy happiness, that’s not for people like us, not everyone can be rich, and we can’t afford it. The author explores the myriad ways we sabotage ourselves by

reviewed by Lloyd Lovely following practices that only make lives worse. I especially appreciated the section describing how we victimize ourselves by blaming, complaining, and justifying. Face it – money is important. Don’t believe it? Here’s what the author says: “And although love may make the world go round, it sure doesn’t pay for the building of any hospitals, churches, or homes. It also doesn’t feed anybody …….. Not convinced? Try paying your bills with love.” Reading the book gave me a fresh perspective. I decided to improve my lot by following the sound fiscal ideas this book proposes. Saving, not spending, is my new mantra. By the end of the book, you will believe it too! This title is also available from MLS in audio format. Lloyd Lovely is the MLS Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Support, which makes him feel important. Please don’t tell him the truth.

Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Liesl Shurtliff Everyone is familiar with the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. The impish man who helped the miller’s daughter spin straw into gold in exchange for her first born child. As with all legends, the truth is often lost over time. Rump is not evil or malicious. He is merely a boy who discovers he has an unusual talent, which ends up causing him more trouble than he ever could have imagined. He grew up never knowing his full name. And in a land where your name is your destiny, only having half a name can be quite problematic. He is short for his age and, with a name like Rump, his classmates tease him constantly. When he discovers he can turn straw into gold, he hopes that things will finally start to turn around. However, he is warned that magic comes at a price, and unfortunately his problems 8 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n August 2014

reviewed by Kristin Williamson go from bad to worse. And the more he tries to fix his problems, the more entangled in them he becomes. Rump must go out to discover his full name and hopefully find a way to unravel the mess he has gotten himself into. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fairy tales, enjoys adventure or mystery, or simply wants a fun, quick read. Kristin Williamson is the Children’s Services Outreach Coordinator for the Metropolitan Library System. When she isn’t at work planning 1,2,3 Play with Me sessions and creating science programs, she can probably be found posting pictures of her pets on Instagram, crocheting amigurumi of her favorite characters, or catching up on her favorite comic book series.
