The Song Is Gone But the Memory Lingers On by Larry Johnson
Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! will celebrate its 60th anniversary as our official state song next year, so I thought it might be fitting to say goodbye yet again to our original official state song, Oklahoma – A Toast.
klahoma – A Toast was penned in 1904 by Kingfisher College student Harriet Parker Camden. You probably didn’t know that Kingfisher had a Congregational college in territorial days, though it did produce three Rhodes Scholars during its short life on the prairie. Harriet, daughter of the college’s founder, wrote the winning entry in a contest to decide the state anthem. The Parkers were typical homesteaders who had lived in Michigan (where Harriet was born), Illinois, and Wichita before staking a claim near Kingfisher during the 1889 Land Run when Harriet was a teenager. Her father, Joseph, loved his new home and often took his daughter on buggy rides all over the new territory in order to admire the landscape and the brilliant sunsets. The song was inspired by those trips and dedicated to him. Harriet never saw the subject of her song become a state, however – she married and left for California in 1906 to lead a Steinbeckian life of olive and orange growing. Apparently the song was a big hit and quite zippy for the day. But although children sang it in school every morning, it wasn’t officially adopted as the state song until 1935. The reason may have been that the legislature was too busy with more important matters (like impeaching governors) but I suspect that the veiled references to drinking (e.g. vintage and quaff ) may not have been acceptable in our dry state. You can see some similarities between Harriet’s song and Oklahoma!, the difference of course being that Oklahoma! ups the ante on everything: the corn is higher, the land we belong to is grander and those four syllables in the name are sung just a bit longer and louder. There’s also no confusion over how to rhyme “half ” and “quaff ”. Well, hoist a quaff for good ol’ Oklahoma on December 21.

The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz Standing up to bullies. Empowerment. The value of hard work. Girl Power. All lessons you wouldn’t expect to see in a book that presents a fresh spin on the story of the three little pigs. And, it’s all done in rhyme. Riding on the wave of bully awareness, The Three Ninja Pigs takes the classic story of whiny, wimpy pigs who get their houses blown down and creates a new version of the empowered pig. The three pigs decide to learn martial arts in order to stop the wolf bully who is going around fairy tale town terrorizing everyone. The first pig learns aikido, but he doesn’t spend much time developing his skill, so he quickly runs wee wee all the way to his sister, the last pig, who spends much more time practicing and working out to learn karate. Sister pig masters her power pork chop, sending the wolf running.
reviewed by Jennifer Jones I like the stance this book takes by teaching kids that you don’t have to put up with a situation even if it’s been going on a long time. I also appreciate the way the pig with the best work ethic is rewarded (and it happens to be a girl) by being the superhero of the story, and is able to stop the bully in his tracks. This author clearly crafted a story rich in lessons that kids should learn today. And the rhymes and play on words related to pigs and pork make the story funny as well. It’s like the classic fairy tale collided with Kung Fu Panda. Kids will love it! Jennifer is the Children’s Services Associate Librarian at the Capitol Hill Library. She loves reading, music, and doing fun, spontaneous things with her kids.

Wild: From Lost To Found On The Pacific Crest Trail Cheryl Strayed There is something compelling about a memoir that shows the ability of the human spirit to persevere through uncomfortable, grueling conditions. Wild by Cheryl Strayed is one of those type of books along with Ernest Shackleton’s Antartic adventure South and the recently published Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand about the trials of Louis Zamperini. In Wild we see that the author actually chose to put herself through the difficult task of walking the Pacific Crest Trail from California to Oregon in the winter months, but the dramatic effect on the reader is no less riveting than exploring in some more exotic location. Strayed was going though emotional difficulties after a painful divorce and the death of her mother. She made the bold step to make the long journey as a way to come to terms with the changes in her life. She relates the story of her past while moving forward in the present along the trail. She encounters bad icy weather, snow storms, wild animals, leering men, running out of water, running out of money. 6 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n December 2012
reviewed by Christine Bassett She plans ahead sending boxes of food, money and clean clothes to various towns and post offices along the trail so that she wouldn’t have to carry all her provisions along the way. Even so, she is an inexperienced hiker, her pack is far too heavy and her boots are too small. She develops blisters on her feet so severe that her skin peels off with her socks. At one point she finds herself hiking in sandals because her boots have disintegrated. Strayed writes about her past both with brutal honesty and without self pity. Her ability to keep going to reach her goal which is to end her pilgrimage at the Bridge of the Gods in Columbia is what makes this book such compelling reading from start to finish. This title is also available as an audiobook CD, an EPUB book, a WMA audiobook, and in a Kindle edition.

The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

Pagford is a picturesque English town with an ugly slum, the Fields. The citizens of this small town are so connected that their every movement impacts others. Barry is a town councilor, a mentor, and a banker. Tessa is a loving wife and a school counselor. Kay is a gifted social worker. Teri is addicted to illegal drugs. Howard is head of the town council, owner of the deli, and morbidly obese. Parminder is his doctor. Simon hits his wife and his children despite his glorious view of the river from his hilltop house. Of these, only Barry, Teri, and Simon grew up in the Fields. But all of their teenage children are struggling with abuse: drug abuse, parental abuse, self-abuse, bullying, or other risky behaviors. A “casual vacancy” occurs when a town councilor dies unexpectedly. So the book is about small town politics. It’s also about poverty, race, neglect, addictions, and gossip. And almost everyone has a
computer, so the gossip and bullying go viral. Bottom line, this is a heartbreaking tale about parenting, parenting our own children, yes, especially our teenagers, but also accepting responsibility for the welfare of all the children in our community. Even readers with no children, even those who never wanted children, will be moved by these timeless characters. Rowling’s first adult novel is not an easy read. But once you hurdle the Briticisms and the dozens of major characters, it is definitely worth the effort. Rowling is the new Dickens. This title is also available from MLS as a Playaway, an audiobook CD, and in large print. Marilyn Backus has worked for the Metropolitan Library System for over 20 years. The Cocktail Waitress by James M. Cain

In his Afterword, editor Charles Ardai makes an observation essential to “getting” The Cocktail Waitress: “No femme fatale thinks she is one, or admits it if she does.” And this is significant how? The book’s narrator and titular character, Joan Medford, tells us that she’s just buried her husband, an abusive jerk who drunkenly plowed into a tree in a borrowed car leaving Joan and their young son penniless. The boy has gone to live with his aunt, who wants to raise him as her own. Joan takes a job in a middle-brow bar/restaurant where she meets two men who take an interest in her—one good looking, young and broke, and the other old and rich. And Marriageable. And with a severe heart condition. James M. Cain specialized in these “love knots,” as
he called them. You sit back and wait for Joan and the rich guy to marry, and then for him to die in a way that implicates his widow and her boy friend. Well, you think you’re going to sit back, but on the last page (the final two words, actually) Cain yanks the chair out from under you. Written in 1975, two years before Cain’s death, The Cocktail Waitress was thought to be an urban legend until Ardai found it in pieces and reconstructed it. I guess miracles do happen. Amped by Daniel H. Wilson “Soon your child will be the only normal child. Left behind. And even if your community doesn’t upgrade, others will. So if you don’t live in a flashy place like Los Angeles or New York City, why, you just might watch your whole town get left behind. How then will you protect your children?” Owen Gray is not particularly young or athletic. Nor is he all that smart. His most distinguishing characteristic is that he suffered from epilepsy as a kid. As such, he was the perfect candidate for the Neural Autofocus MK-4 Brain Implant, which modulated the brain activity causing the seizures. It helped him focus, function, and fit in. He is an “amp.” He’s also a deadly weapon – he just doesn’t know it yet. The new technology quickly changes the landscape, putting an end to physical and learning disabilities, providing mobility to amputees and the wheelchair bound. The playing field is leveled and jobs become

The Supreme Court rules that amps are not protected in the same was as pures. And a new class war begins. Owen just wants to survive. He finds himself on the run to a small town in rural Oklahoma. There he meets the charismatic and crazy Lyle Crosby, who proclaims himself leader of the amps and has a dark vision for the future. Owen’s gift becomes apparent under Lyle’s tutelage, and he must decide for himself who is right and who is wrong. Who is good and who is bad? What makes one truly human? This title is also available from MLS as an audiobook CD, a WMA audiobook, an EPUB ebook, and in a Kindle edition. With her sharply-honed reviewing skills, Jana Hausburg is ready to tackle any literary challenge. Except, maybe, vampire romance. She is also the manager at the Capitol Hill Library.

Gem of a Ghost by Sue Ann Jaffarian Emma Whitecastle first learned that she could see and talk with spirits in Ghost a la Mode, the first book in the Ghost of Granny Apples series. After she proved the innocence of her great-great-great grandmother, Granny’s ghost became her sidekick and helped Emma solve the mysterious disappearance of a young actress in Ghost in the Polka Dot Bikini. In Gem of a Ghost, Emma is called on to help a friend, Joanne, who feels she is being haunted by her late husband, Max Naiman, a successful actor who supposedly committed suicide. Emma learns that their daughter, Lainey, has also attempted suicide multiple times and is now at a residential facility for those with emotional issues. reviewed by Phyllis Davidson felt as if something was urging her to hurt herself, but something else was helping her resist that force. Emma and Granny set out to try to discover whether there really is a malevolent ghost out there, and if so, how they can help the ghost return peacefully to the other side. I was skeptical at the beginning of each of these books, but each one turned out to be surprisingly interesting. Definitely not your typical horror scenario, most of the ghosts in this series are quite friendly and helpful. Phyllis Davidson is a librarian at the Downtown Library. She is the editor of a family newsletter, teaches genealogy classes to customers at the library, and delves into her own family history outside the library walls.
December Holidays for Everyone
o you ever wonder about the other winter holidays, the ones that are lesser known in Oklahoma? Everyone knows about the major celebrations, the ones we love in spite of commercialization, but there are several others you can find out about by exploring at the library. MLS has a vast collection of titles that are carefully selected to satisfy all reading levels. From detailed volumes for curious adults to simple texts for school kids writing reports, we’ve got books for you to browse through, read casually, or study. The nice thing about being a library customer, as you know, is that if you want more details you can always ask a librarian to help you find the right book. The winter solstice is the time at which the sun appears to be at its closest point to the horizon. Old Sol hanging low in the sky has always seemed significant to people of all cultures, who take notice of it in different ways. December is a month of more than one important holiday. Bodhi Day is celebrated by Buddhists on December 8 in commemoration the enlightenment experienced by Siddhartha Gautama while sitting under a Pipal tree, the event that him into the Buddha. In December, Hindus observe Pancha Ganapati, a five-day celebration of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed patron of art and science, the remover of obstacles. Dongzhi (“the extreme of winter”) is the winter solstice festival of the Chinese. An expression of the Taoist “yin / yang”
principle of complimentary opposites, it is also celebrated around December 22. Muslims observe the 10th day of the 12th month as Eid-al-Adha, commemorating Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, a prophet and ancestor of Mohammad. The festival lasts for four days. Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights, and one of the most important Jewish holidays. Lasting eight days and nights, and beginning on the 25th day of Kislev (December 8), Hanukkah celebrates the revolution of the Jewish people against suppression. Kwanzaa, lasting from December 26 through January 1, is the only one of the major December holidays that was deliberately created and has a definite starting date, 1966. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa to “give Blacks an alternative to the existing holiday and an opportunity to celebrate themselves and history, rather than simply imitate the practice of the dominant society.” An example of a Native American winter solstice festival is the Hopi’s Soyaluna on December 22. It is a time for saying prayers for the New Year and for wishing each other health and prosperity. To learn more about these and other popular holiday celebrations, take a look at books with the 394 shelf number. Better yet, ask a librarian to take you to them. You may find out that every day is a holiday for somebody.
One For the Nooks You probably know that one of the recent additions to the MLS family of library services is the ability of customers to “check out” eBooks for a variety of eReaders. You can pop your current read into your pocket or purse and still have room to spare. The convenience is great, but the only drawback for some is the fact that you have to connect your eReader to a computer to complete the download. Not anymore. If you use a Nook eReader, you can now download library books wirelessly, cutting out entirely the need for a standard computer to complete your library transaction. If you have a Nook Tablet, Nook Color or Nook HD, you’ll need to install the OverDrive Media Console App, which is available free from Barnes and Noble. As with most tablet services, B&N requires a credit card on file for app downloads even though the app is free. The MLS Tradition of Greatness Continued in 2011-2012 very year about this time we at the Metropolitan Library System pause for a quick look back at our achievements in the year just completed, then take a deep breath and get ready to accomplish even more in the year to come. Getting better all the time is one of our most notable traditions. Just take a look at our success as reflected in usage stats: . New Cards Issued: 42,611 . Total Registered Borrowers: 408,504 . Total Circulation: 6,237,809 . Total Library Visits: 2,661,643 . Total Program Attendance: 167,755 . Total Programs: 8,735 . Library Internet Computer Users: 692,985 In FY 2011-2012 we continue to improved our digital presence by adding new databases. We’ve offered free digital checkouts for new and classic books for a few years, but now customers with most eReaders can check out eBooks wirelessly, without having to cable the eReader to the computer and sync. In addition to new services, we also treat our most recognizable and popular programs as works in progress. We introduced some innovative features to our annual Summer Reading festival, including a Summer Reading

Game and a book of coupons for a variety of wellreceived reading incentives. The most excitement in 2012 was generated by the Grand Opening of the new Patience S. Latting Northwest Library at 5600 NW 122nd Street, and the re-opening of the renovated Southern Oaks Library at 6900 S. Walker. The Northwest Library was the realization of a dream. A long time in the making, the library received rave reviews from the hundreds of people who now think of it as their library home. More new and renovated libraries are on the horizon. We’re working with the City of Jones for a new, permanent library building in that community, and Capitol Hill Library will soon enjoy a re-do as well. A bonus advantage from the Southern Oaks renovation came in the form of the Almonte Library, the temporary replacement for the closed Southern Oaks. We were blown away to discover that within a ten month period, the Almonte location had 5,606 new customers that had not used any of the Metropolitan Libraries previously. Now Almonte is closed for renovations and will re-open in early 2013 as a new library. As you can see, nothing slows us down for long. Creating the best public library service in Oklahoma is what we do. It’s a long distance marathon, and we’re still on our first wind.
