New info Sometimes it seems as if everyone has a website. Even England’s Official Monster Raving Loony Party (an actual political party) has an official website. So does the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whose followers are known as “Pastafarians.”
We can’t reach such rarified heights of silliness—we don’t even try—but the Metropolitan Library System
does have its own website and in this issue of info we’ll let you know about a couple of ways it can be useful to you. Check it out.
And so you won’t think that weird political parties and pseudo-religions have locked science out of the goofy website business, there’s one for high school seniors, the only people eligible for the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Duck Calling Contest annual scholarship. Whew. Happy holidays to you, too!

The Christmas Secret by Alexander Donna VanLiere Being late for work can get you fired, even if it’s because you were saving someone’s life. For a single mother, whose petty ex-husband refuses to pay child support, that is a big problem, especially at Christmas time. Fortunately, Christine Eisley finds a new job with a boss who is as nice as the spicy bakery treats she sells, but while Christine is serving up sweets at the bakery, someone is diligently seeking her. Jason Haybert is working in his grandfather’s store until he can find the accounting job he really wants. Grandfather Wilson is a demanding boss who expects Jason to learn about all the employees in his store, and he withholds Jason’s paycheck until he can name them all. Then he assigns Jason the task of finding the mysterious Christy who saved the life of his bookkeeper.
reviewed by Phyllis Davidson When Jason comes to the bakery looking for Christy, she thinks her ex-husband sent him to spy on her. Even though she finds him very attractive, she does everything she can to throw him off her trail. Meanwhile, she begins to find hope again with the help of newly-found friends and mysterious strangers. When Christine and Jason finally learn the truth about each other, everything gets tied up like a big, beautiful Christmas bow. You’ll enjoy discovering The Christmas Secret. This title is also available as a compact disc sound recording. Phyllis Davidson is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is the editor of a family newsletter, teaches genealogy classes to customers at the library, and delves into her own family history outside the library walls.

The Addams Family by Charles Addams and H. Kevin Miserocchi It’s a heart-warming scene in a single panel cartoon of a dad building something with his kids. The children are detailing a medieval torture device while their father enthuses, “You’ll see, chicks, that half the fun is making it yourself.” The other half of the fun is left to your imagination. Yes, it’s New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams with one of his patented reversal of normalcy drawings of Gomez being a good father. In another cozy scene, just right for this time of year, the children are building a tremendous blaze in the fireplace. As their parents peek into the room, Gomez whispers to Morticia, “The little dears! They still believe in Santa Claus.” 6 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n December 2010
reviewed by Doug Bentin This outre comedy can be found in a new collection of some of Addams’ best work. H. Kevin Miserocchi adds some connective text describing the original Addams Family and comparing their characteristics to those concocted by TV and film interpreters. The originals, as you might guess, are much more macabre. Anyone with a twisted sense of humor will enjoy paying a call on the Addams Family after all these years, and the book makes the perfect holiday gift for that special creepy uncle in your life. Doug Bentin also reviews movies for The Oklahoma Gazette.

The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory
reviewed by Christine Bassett
The successful author of the historical novel The Other Boleyn Girl has now published the first two parts of a prequel set during the time of The Wars of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster. Set in the later part of the fifteenth century the wars, so called after the colored roses that the supporters wore, were really wars of succession between the Dukes of York (white) and Lancaster (red) after the death of Edward III. The first part of Gregory’s trilogy focused on the war from the perspective of the white Queen, or Elizabeth Woodville the wife of Edward IV Duke of York and the mother of the famous princes in the tower. The red Queen is Lancastrian Margaret Beaufort, wife of Edmund Tudor and mother of Henry Tudor, founder of the Tudor dynasty, and this second book relates the same events as the first from the perspective of the other Queen. Margaret is an ambitious woman who tries to undermine support for the House of York through subterfuge and trickery and ensure that her son Henry becomes
King by collaborating with Queen Elizabeth Woodville in arranging a marriage between Henry and her daughter, Elizabeth, thus ending the Wars of The Roses. Deftly combining history with fiction, Gregory skillfully portrays the period of war and instability in 15th century England and shows how the two Queens both achieved their goals using different skills to manipulate those around them, rather like pieces on a chess board. Elizabeth charmed and beguiled whereas Margaret used cunning and deceit. Readers fascinated with the story of the princes in the tower will also enjoy finding out more about the unsolved mystery. The third part of the trilogy will focus on Henry VII’s Queen. *Check out www.philippagregory.com for more background information. Christine Bassett has worked for the MLS for nearly 10 years. She currently works as a reference librarian at Belle Isle and is a volunteer community literacy tutor in her spare time.

Modern Aspirations Poems by Gerald Locklin; short stories by Beth Wilson
reviewed by Jana Hausburg
I like poetry and even write a poem from time to time. But I feel completely unqualified to review poetry which is why I’m going to skip over the first part of this book and dive right into the second. Beth Wilson, reference librarian at Midwest City, has published a collection of short stories drawn right from Oklahoma. Sometimes stark but always down-to-earth, many of the stories take place in and around a trailer park. In “Personal Loans”, a single mom has an affair with a married man, a man her mother warns her won’t stick around. “Queen of Cups” focuses on an uncomfortable dream and the
possibilities of reincarnation, while “East of Enid” ends a trilogy of stories about Michael, a boy who has grown up with minimal parenting and seems set on making a disastrous decision. For inspiration, Wilson says she “uses her own observations and experiences from the Heartland, as well as stories she gathers from her husband and friends.” Jana Hausburg is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is also the author of It Wasn’t Much.

Think of a Numb3r by John Verdon It’s November and snowing in upstate New York where self-help guru Mark Mellery receives threatening letters containing ominous poems. He hires retired Detective Dave Gurney to figure out what is behind the odd letters. Stranger yet, the mysterious poet appears to be able to read Mellery’s mind. The guru is told in his first letter to think of a number and Mellery thinks of the first number that comes into his head - it is 658. Inside a second envelope the creepy poet sent, is the number 658. “But how could he possibly know,” Mellery asks Gurney, “that that was the number – unless he really is reading my mind?” Mellery cannot go to the police because he fears he has done something criminal during alcoholic
reviewed by Nancy Lytle blackouts during an earlier period of his life. The retired detective craves the challenge of solving a difficult mystery – a mystery that evolves into a hideous crime. None of the clues make sense. Gurney finds he’s dealing with the cleverest criminal he’s ever been up against. This title is also available as compact disc audiobook. The Visual Dictionary by Simon Beecroft Currently #1 on the NYT Best Seller List for youth books, the Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary is an intricate walk through a decade of Star Warsthemed Lego sets for kids of all ages. Author Simon Beecroft said in an online interview, “It’s the most amazing thing, but I can’t really explain it. Maybe because they (Legos and Star Wars) both work so well on many levels; they both appeal to kids and older people, and adults, all of whom take from it what they want to.” Lego Star Wars Visual Dictionary is targeted for ages seven and older. However, collectors or fans of every age will want to take a look. It gives everything from the date of creation for each piece, to the number of pieces it came with. Want to know the original part number? Not to worry– that information is listed as well. There’s a page of Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knights, Wookies, and Bounty Hunters. Each illustrates relevant sets and mini figures. The second chapter is much the same but covers the Clone Wars figures and sets. The Specialist Sets chapter covers mini sets, Technic and Ultimate Collector sets... throughout the book, the bottom corners feature ‘flick animations’ of Luke waving his light sabre and marching Storm Troopers.” In Yoda’s words, “Read you should” and may the fun be with you.

Art For Everyone he last phase of the Ralph Ellison Library renovation
project is about to commence. Esteemed sculptor David Phelps, of Norman, has been commissioned to create a
major work of public art for the library. He will begin work soon. To provide an introduction to the artist, we chatted with David
recently. Here’s what he had to say about living and working in Oklahoma, his new library project, and public art in general.
Info: Tell us a little about the project you will create for the library. David: Two different friends e-mailed me the prospectus for this project. When I looked at it, I had a good feeling about how the project could mesh with the way I approach my artwork.
The piece will consist of fabricated steel, cast bronze, porcelain,
and aluminum sheet.
The sculpture will consist of a triple life

California but you reversed that stereotype to attend grad school David: It’s a long story but my art history professor in Stockton, CA, had formerly taught at St. Gregory’s in Shawnee.
Someone he knew recruited me for the Graduate Program at OU.
I had essentially never been east of Lake
Tahoe, so had no concept of Oklahoma
other than that supplied by Steinbeck. I drove out to Norman in early January.
I don’t remember having any plans about where I wanted to
settle. But I grew to like living in Oklahoma and by the time I
got out of Graduate School, and things were going well with my art career, I felt strongly that Oklahoma
was where I wanted to be. It was centrally located and since I was creating big
sculptures that needed to be transported it seemed smart to be in the middle of
the country. I could afford the size studio I needed to do large work and found it
hard to imagine being able to do that anywhere else I would want to live. I made friends here and without realizing it, Oklahoma became home.

Ralph Ellison will be carved out of the page. This image appears to twist and follow anyone walking past the sculpture. Floating above the typewriter will be two additional triple life sized
typewritten pages. An area on top of the fabricated steel books and beside the typewriter will provide a space for actual Ralph
Ellison Library books that can be checked out by library patrons. Info: What is the value of public art? David: Public art accomplishes several things. It helps foster a
more beautiful environment. This is subtle, and easy to miss when
it’s not there, but when it is there, people feel better. A community that cares about aesthetics is a plus for most good companies looking to build or relocate.
It can serve an educational role. This piece certainly does that. Artwork in general is expensive. My private pieces typically
are afforded only by fairly well off people. Public Art allows for
people other than the well off to experience and benefit from fine art.

or quite a while now library supporters have been able to go to the Friends of the Library section of the MLS website and pay their membership dues online through a third party funds administrator. Now, the Friends are changing the way this service works -- you can not only take care of your membership fee online but the data you generate will go automatically into your secure user profile. You can even purchase a gift membership for that special someone in your life and a card will be sent letting that person know you were thinking of him or her. “The Friends of the Library web pages have been given a new look while becoming more user friendly at the same time,” said Siobhan Morava, the MLS Development Coordinator for Community Organizations. “The Friends even have their own Facebook link, which will expand the meaning of ‘friend’ of the library.” Perhaps even more exciting are the changes in store for the Library Endowment Trust pages. For the first time, those wishing to support the library through the Endowment Trust will be able to donate online. “In the past,” said Chris Carroll, MLS Development Coordinator-Trusts, “Donors had to go to the old website and print off forms and then mail or hand-deliver them to our office. With the new system, donating is made a whole lot easier.” Plus, you can take a look at your history of giving to the library, and the information you need in order to take advantage of the tax benefits available to you is right there. “Gifts to the Endowment Trust can be made in memory of a departed friend or loved one, or to honor and celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion,” he added, and then pointed out that up to date information about the annual Literary Voices™ event featuring Laura W. Bush in 2011 is also available all at the same place. As always, you can access these new web pages through the MLS website, but you can now go directly there as well by going to supportmls.org and click on Donate to the Endowment. The new Friends and Endowment Trust web pages are the hub for supporting the library in non-traditional ways. Roll up and take a look!
Oklahoma Images Online We were starting to warm up with Centennial Fever in late 2006 as the 100th year of Oklahoma statehood was just around the corner. We wanted to do something special for the occasion, something that would be of interest all through 2007 and continue to be of value long afterward. When we realized that we already had in place the basis of an ongoing historical series, the wheels of creativity started rolling. People had been enjoying our online Oklahoma Images collection for years—info readers still enjoy it every month as it provides the foundation on which Larry Johnson constructs his monthly Oklahoma Images essays—but we wanted to find a way to bring the stories behind the photos to life. We welcomed the collaboration of former Governor George Nigh, and later historian Bob Burke, and we created a series of taped segments to tell stories from Oklahoma’s unique history. Did you know that those short pieces are still available for viewing through our website, www.metrolibrary.org? From the home page, go to the Media tab at the top of the page, then click on “Videos About Oklahoma Images” or “Oklahoma Moments,” and you’re ready to watch and listen. If you turn first to Oklahoma Images in our magazine each month, we know you’ll have some fun.

. . . Discovering New Literary Treasures
Getting tired of a constant diet of best sellers and book club hype? Want to take a look at what librarians read? Here are two favorite books as selected by MLS staff. Goldman, Duff. Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes. 641.8653/G6195a If you like to make cakes, eat cakes, or even just to look at them on television, Chef Duff, of The Food Channel’s popular show Ace of Cakes, makes a great champion of all things pastry. The book is also of interest to anyone fascinated with the way television shows are cooked up.
Tack, Karen and Alan Richardson. Hello, Cupcake! 641.8653/T118h What the food artists on Ace of Cakes do for the big fellas, this book does for the cake’s little sibling, the cupcake. There are concoctions in the book you won’t believe are cupcakes and not, well, anything else. The recipes are not too hard and the ingredients are not too exotic—the results just look that way.
