new info We’re back! After pausing our print magazine in early 2020, we’re back with a new iteration. So, what can you expect from us now? A new issue will hit all 19 of our library locations around Oklahoma County each month. Metro Library staff — everyone from the Marketing & Communications team to our librarians and library managers — will contribute stories of interest to our customers along with reviews on books, movies and music. Longtime Info Mag fans might be happy to hear our Special Collections & Research department will continue to contribute a monthly “Oklahoma Images” story, accompanied by historic photos dug up from the SCR collection. And lastly, the ever-popular calendar of events is back, residing in the final pages of each issue. Use this calendar to plan activities with your family, find a virtual storytime, attend a virtual event (and, eventually, an in-person event) and identify a book club that can introduce you to new people and books. Ultimately, Info Magazine aims to honor our community by telling authentic stories and showcasing Metro Library customers and staff. We hope you pick up a new magazine every time you visit a Metro Library location and find something useful inside every time.

Many art reference libraries come with a brutal caveat: The books cannot be checked out. This forces art lovers to soak in as much information as they can at the library, as they can’t enjoy and study the books in the comfort of their own homes, schools or businesses. For Oklahoma City, that changes now. Metropolitan Library System and Oklahoma Contemporary open the new Oklahoma Contemporary Art Reference Library, a circulating collection located on the second floor of the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library. Consisting of over 400 books covering the history, importance and key players of contemporary art, the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Reference Library encourages visitors not only to browse and enjoy the new space, but to take books with them. ArtDesk magazine, Kirkpatrick Foundation and Christian Keesee, Oklahoma Contemporary chairman and founder, worked with the Library and the art center to bring the collection to life. Many of the titles came from Keesee’s private shelves, while others were reviewed by ArtDesk magazine or recommended by the staff at Oklahoma Contemporary. Jeremiah Matthew Davis, Oklahoma Contemporary artistic director, said the idea for the art reference library came from Keesee, who saw a specific need that was not being met by many similar collections. “Oklahoma Contemporary encourages artistic expression in all its forms, and that very much includes literature and poetry, the literary arts and writing,” Davis said. “We have a small, non-circulating reading library of art design, architecture, performance and dance books in our Creative Lounge.” “After a visit to the Downtown Library location, Mr. Keesee pitched an idea for a collaboration with the Metropolitan Library System. We started conversations with the library, which has been a partner of ours for many years. We began a dialogue about how we could collaborate to form a collection that would circulate.” Louisa McCune, Kirkpatrick Foundation executive director, said today’s artists frame issues, improve communities and affect change. Their spotlight in Metro Library’s art reference library makes this a one-of-akind resource for the residents of Oklahoma County. cont.Ù

“Not only does this library make picture perfect the process of private and public collaboration, but it re-enforces the reality that artists are cultivated in the widespread reaches of every city, town and village,” McCune said. “Art democratizes, and so does this library collection.” The art reference library features benches reminiscent of an art museum and, of course, the wildly vibrant books, which cover a broad array of topics, including Native
American artists and women in art. It also includes some topics that greatly expand the understanding of what contemporary art encompasses, like street art, graffiti, Polaroid photography and even children’s pop-up books. The collection includes volumes on Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami, Banksy and Roy Lichtenstein as well as books on Ed Ruscha, Ai Weiwei and David Hockney. For Judie Matthews, special collections librarian for Metropolitan Library System, the
creation of the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Reference Library helps extend the mission of both Oklahoma Contemporary and the Downtown Library. “The public library should be a responsive and innovative space,” Matthews said. “We want customers to discover new and exciting things that answer questions and engage their minds every time they walk through our doors or go to our website.” Keesee said that, more than anything else, his hope for the Oklahoma Contemporary Art Reference Library is that it be used frequently and enthusiastically. “I hope that people will be able to use the library to further their curiosity about contemporary art in general, but more specifically about the artists we are exhibiting at Oklahoma Contemporary,” he said. “What would really be great would be if many of the books got worn out and needed to be replaced.” u Photos by Brandon Smith

NonFiction/ All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and 363.7 AL416a Solutions for the Climate Crisis edited by Ayanna Elizabeth Johnson and Katherine K. Wilkinson Available formats: book, e-audiobook (Libby) In this beautifully nuanced and intersectional collection of essays, poems and illustrations, a diverse group of women from a plethora of scientific and artistic disciplines share their perspectives on the climate crisis we face today. Drawing from scientific data, Indigenous wisdom and teachings, social justice and activism, and critiques of extractive systems of colonialism and capitalism, these illuminating writings bare the alarming truth, while instilling a profound sense of hope for the future we can build if we are brave enough to act swiftly and boldly. The contributors hail from India, California, Mexico, Chicago and more — their homes experiencing the detrimental effects of climate change and environmental racism that threatens the livelihood of their communities. Their messages, full of grief for what is lost and hope for what can be saved, inspire readers to think beyond climate fatalism and pessimism toward tangible solutions, many of which have been fought for by marginalized and frontline communities for decades. This book is a necessary read for anyone interested in learning how to participate in the climate movement. reviewed by: Lupita Gonzalez is an engagement specialist II at Capitol Hill Library. City Spies by James Ponti
J Fiction/PON
Available formats: book, e-book, e-audiobook (Libby) When you find yourself thinking about a book’s characters six months after you finished it, you know there’s something there. Twelve-year-old Sara is a New Yorker in her bones and a hacker in her blood — ready to rise above the system that keeps letting her down. She almost gets away with it too but is caught and finds herself at the mercy of a curious Brit who calls himself “Mother.” What he offers in exchange for her expertise is a chance to escape crooked foster parents and make a new family instead — a family of misfit MI6 operatives, each uniquely remarkable in very specific talents. Working together, they’re like a symphony of crime-fighters — a reading treat! While the plot is a bit formulaic and some characters underdeveloped, it’s an exciting, globe-trotting read, great for kids into mysteries and misfits. Fortunately, the first sequel is out and more are planned! reviewed by: Jennifer England-Burnside is a librarian at the Northwest Library and has also worked at the Downtown Library. She’s worked at Brooklyn Public Library and is a school librarian at a lovely little school in Edmond.
The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michelle Richardson
Fiction/RIC
Available formats: book, large print, book on CD, e-book (hoopla), e-audiobook (Libby or hoopla) Have you ever been ignored, left out, shunned? If so, you will relate to “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.” Born and raised in the Kentucky backwoods, Cussy Mary Carter or Bluett, as she’s nicknamed, is the last of the famed Blue People of Kentucky. Pa works in the coal mine and before Mamma died, he swore he’d see his only child married. He sets out the courting candle but Bluett, at 19, sees no need to marry; she’s earning money on her own as a WPA Pack Horse librarian. Bluett’s route takes her into hidden coves and dark hollers. Superstitions run high in them thar hills, and most customers only want the materials without seeing or touching Bluett out of fear. Fortunately though, some customers become her friends, seeing the kind person beneath the indigo hue. When the town doctor suggests a cure for Bluett, she hopes the treatment will turn her blue skin white and all her troubles will be over. “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” is a beautiful heartwrenching story of hope, discrimination and redemption. reviewed by: A born and raised Oklahomie, Kelley Riha is an actor, playwright and improv artist. She treasures her family, Chickasaw heritage and golf (the Zen kind).
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall
Fiction/HAL
Available formats: book, e-book If you miss the comforting hug that is a new season of “The Great British Baking Show,” then this book is for you. Rosaline’s life was planned out for her before she could even walk, but when having a baby at 19 changes those plans, she finds herself in a deadend job with no foreseeable way out. When she gets a chance to be on Britain’s premier baking show, “Bake Expectations,” she jumps at the opportunity. While she expected the experience of a lifetime, she didn’t expect to find two very different, and attractive, men baking alongside her. Rosaline must make a choice: Does she want to get back on the path that was always meant for her? Or does she choose to find happiness where she already is? This book was a delightful distraction that lifted my spirits. The details and writing style perfectly evoke “The Great British Baking Show,” while giving us a behind-the-scenes look at reality television. Grab a cup of tea and check it out! reviewed by: Tess Botkin is a librarian at Northwest Library. When she isn’t planning a storytime or making a new felt set, you can find her climbing, skating or cycling to her next adventure.

If you’re in need of uplifting, we couldn’t think of a better person for the task than Latin American family musician Sonia De Los Santos. Armed with cheerful instruments like kazoos and ukuleles, the 2019 Latin Grammy nominee will uplift Metro Library customers virtually through three Facebook Live events celebrating Hispanic and Latinx Heritages Month. De Los Santos, a native of Mexico who’s usually bedecked in bold colors with a beaming smile that never seems to fade, might just be the epitome of joy. In fact, “¡Alegría!,” meaning “joy” in Spanish, is one of her favorite songs to perform, and it happens to be a crowd-pleaser as well. That song, and her other Spanish-language and bilingual songs, will make an appearance on her set list for Metro Library customers in September and October. “‘¡Alegría!’ is very simple to sing along to, but it also has a very special story attached to it,” she said. “I wrote it because my mom told me I was born with a smile on my face. I thought, ‘What? I thought all babies were born crying!’ It’s a personal anecdote that puts a smile on my face again and again, every time I think about it.” During “¡Alegría!,” De Los Santos prompts listeners to think about their favorite memory, person or color that makes them happy and encourages them to hang onto that thought and revisit it on days when things aren’t going their way.
Don’t be surprised if De Los Santos’s music inspires you to get off your feet, clap along with her prompts and even dance a little. And if you don’t speak Spanish, no worries — you’ll have fun following along with the musician’s gestures and prompts and will likely learn something along the way. “Even if you don’t speak Spanish, you’ll still be able to follow along,” she said. “Even if we’re not in the same space, you can follow hand motions and participate in that way.” u
