new info As we usher in November, we look forward to the culturally diverse holidays on the horizon and giving our customers opportunities to learn more about their own cultures and those different from theirs. Flip to our events calendar to see how you can take part in Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, the Mexican celebration of love and respect for deceased family members. In the events calendar you’ll also find online events, cultural experiences and take-home kit information about Native American Heritage Month, which honors the history and culture of Indigenous people in our community. Next up, you’ll get a German lesson of sorts on Page 8 as we relay how our partnership with our sister library in Düsseldorf, Germany, came about. In the coming years we’ll collaborate with the International English Library there to host virtual events and shine a light on each other’s cultures. Wunderbar, ja? And here’s what makes November so special for this partnership: Nov. 19 marks National Reading Day, which is a huge literary holiday across Germany. (Explore vorlesetag.de/ to learn more.) Whether you learn about the cultures of Germany, celebrate our Indigenous community members or take part in Dia de los Muertos this month, we hope this edition helps you discover something new.

The Bethany Standard
Community members of Bethany, Oklahoma, rallied to rebuild their city after a historic tornado ravaged homes, tore through a school and left 23 dead.
By Judie Matthews, Special Collections & Research Department
Oklahoma County is no stranger to wild weather — especially tornadoes — but the Bethany tornado shocked many in 1930 with both its timing and its strength. The twister touched down around 9:30am on Wednesday, Nov. 19, slowly moving through eastern Bethany for half an hour. In its wake were 700 destroyed buildings, including over 100 homes, and 23 dead. Most upsetting may have been the loss of life at Camel Creek School. Survivors shared that the tornado blew apart the school building just as they fled for cover and their teacher and five classmates lost their lives. Despite 4
these saddening losses, the outpouring of support for the Bethany community from fellow Oklahomans exceeded all expectations. Occurring just before the Thanksgiving holiday, the tragedy set the standard for Oklahomans’ response to disasters in our state. In 1930, Bethany was not seen as a suburb of Oklahoma City, but a distant Nazarene village. The town had only been founded 21 years prior as the new home for Oklahoma Holiness College. Steady consolidation of other Nazarene institutions grew the town’s population to over 2,000 at the time of the storm.

The timing of the tornado surprised everyone, and it’s still one of only three violent tornadoes to touch down in Oklahoma during November. The day’s weather report called for cooler air and some rain, but storms and fierce winds were not anticipated. After the events, weather observers noted that low pressure pockets of slow-moving cold air from the Rocky Mountains moved abnormally and mixed with warmer air from the south. This combination resulted in severe weather that could not have been accurately predicted in 1930. About a fourth of Bethany was destroyed.
The Red Cross, Salvation Army, several local organizations and many volunteers worked day and night to find the missing, treat injuries, feed and shelter those without homes and comfort the mourning. Photos confirm the Red Cross arrived in Bethany almost immediately after the storm cleared, setting up a makeshift field office in an empty downtown storefront. The National Guard searched in ruins day and night. The task was monumental. Damages in today’s dollars were estimated around $12 million. The storm proximity to Thanksgiving may have encouraged generosity in nearby
communities. The Daily Oklahoman company raised $30,000 (today $500,000) within 36 hours from community pledges across the state. Some even delivered cash right to the newspaper’s office. The paper wrote: “Never before has there been a more spontaneous demonstration of sympathy and unselfishness. People of means gave generously and hundreds … contributed their bit. Little tots contributed the contents of their savings banks — people with no money to give, offered their services. Everyone was anxious to help in some way.” Over 200 households were registered to receive support by the Red Cross. Drives for
used clothing and household goods were phenomenally successful. New homes were erected in the tornado’s path less than a week after its terror. The community’s resilience was remarkable, and fittingly, the Bethany Nazarene Church canceled its Thanksgiving Day service for the first time. The head of the church, the Rev. A.I. Parrott, said, “We have carried on bravely, but I believe I speak for the city when I say … we would rather go somewhere and rest.” u

The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali
Fiction/KAM
Available formats: book, book on CD, e-audiobook (Libby) It's 1953 in Tehran, and political upheaval is imminent. Despite the turmoil, two teenagers named Roya and Bahman fall in love at the local stationery shop. They make plans to meet at the town square to head to the courthouse to get married, eager to formalize their union. Violence erupts in the city and they miss each other. It will be 60 years before they reunite in Boston in an attempt to understand why their fate took such a drastic turn that day. By then, they each have married and raised children but are still haunted by the love of their youth. "The Stationery Shop" spans decades — an intimate portrayal of the immigrant experience and the tragedy of war. Author Marjan Kamali drew heavily from her own experience as an Iranian immigrant to craft Roya and Bahman's story. She beautifully weaves historical context and cultural vignettes to immerse the reader into the streets of Tehran. Pick up this book for an escapist read that will tug at your heartstrings! reviewed by: Katherine Hickey is a librarian at Belle Isle Library. Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks
Fiction/BRO
Available formats: book, e-book (Libby), e-audiobook (Libby), Playaway This book answers the question of what would happen if Mount Rainier erupted and displaced a group of Sasquatches. What would you do if a tribe of Sasquatches were forced by volcanic eruption out of hiding? What if you were trapped in a very small and isolated village of people who don't want to believe they are being systematically and intelligently hunted by the Sasquatches? This tale is told through the eyes of the investigators who come upon the deserted community of Greenloop and the discovered journals of a woman named Kate. As they explore the decimated tiny town and read through the journals, a horrifying story emerges. The evidence suggests this community was wiped out in extremely bloody fashion by a previously unknown apex predator. Kate's narrative is one of savagery and death, but also of resilience in the face of unexpected and terrifying circumstances. reviewed by: Gwen Lake is a collection processor at Metro Library's service center. She’s cultivated a life surrounded by books and even has a blog called “Books and Baloney.”
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Fiction/REI
Available formats: book, book on CD, e-book, e-audiobook, large print, Playaway Reading a Taylor Jenkins Reid novel is like diving into the pages of the latest People magazine issue. Full of juicy behind-the-scenes details of celebrity lives and fabulous scenery, it’s hard to believe these characters aren’t real people. Her latest novel, “Malibu Rising,” tells the story of the four children of mega star Mick Riva and their epic 1983 party that burned down the coast of Malibu. Counting down the hours leading up to the party, while intermingling the history of the Riva family through the eyes of each sibling, Reid draws the reader into the sunbaked drama of the Malibu coast with its salty waves and ambitious Hollywood starlets. If you're looking for a fun, frothy read that will leave you pleasurably exhausted like a good day at the beach, check this one out! reviewed by: Anna Todd is a librarian at Bethany Library. She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Fiction/PAR
Available formats: book, e-book (Libby), e-audiobook (Libby) In 14th century China, a young girl is told that her fate is “nothingness.” Her brother, Zhu Chongba, was fated for untold greatness. After his unanticipated death, she sees her chance out of her own grim fate and assumes his identity. Living as a boy, she becomes a monk. Her monastery is attacked, and after a series of unexpected (possibly fated?) events, she becomes a general for the rebel army. Zhu is a compelling main character with grit and determination, but her allies and even her enemies are so well written and complex that you’ll get invested in their stories as well — a loyal best friend who sees Zhu for who she really is, an enemy general who patiently and smartly maneuvers his revenge plot and a virtuous partner who carefully guides Zhu through the political intrigue around her. Fans of epic fantasy and alternate history will get lost in this queer retelling of the founding of the Ming Dynasty and eagerly await the next installment. reviewed by: Kristine Magers is a collection development librarian who purchases adult fiction for Metro Library. Prost! We Found Our Sister Library in Düsseldorf, Germany By Morgan Day, Marketing & Communications Department
I’d say a toast is in order. Metro Library has secured a sister library partnership with the International English Library in Düsseldorf, Germany, and I for one feel like raising a glass to that. As someone who’s wanted for years to learn more about Deutschland, its people, its history and its culture, it couldn’t get much better than this. Exhibit A: My home is filled with German language flashcards and textbooks from my German for traveling class at Francis Tuttle Technology Center. When I open my phone to view the day’s weather, my brain reverts to “Wie ist das Wetter heute?” (“What is the weather today?”). A 5-pound book of beautiful photos of Germany takes up half my coffee table. I’d be all in on any sister library partnership, but this takes the cake for me. Sit back while I tell you how this whole thing came together and what it means for customers of the Metro Library and International English Library. You’d think every time we got on a Zoom call with our German connections, we’d hear German accents, but that’s never been the case. In fact, MLS staff work most closely with two volunteers — one originally from
Oklahoma with an American accent just like us (though her Okie-isms might have worn off a little from her years in Germany), and another with an Australian accent. The reason? An international team of volunteers runs every aspect of the non-profit organization, from purchasing books to programming events and marketing services to the public. As the only English library in North Rhine-Westphalia, the library aims to connect its customers to its 20,000-plus items and foster a community around English books and culture. Our partnership started with Jynon Hibbard, a 16-year volunteer with the International English Library and member of the library’s board of trustees. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Hibbard volunteered with the Friends of the Library Booksale for several years before relocating to Germany 25 years ago. She made it her mission to connect with an Oklahoma library, and she had her heart set on us. “It’s a real privilege for me to partner with the very library that helped nurture my love for books 55-plus years ago,” Hibbard told me. “And now here I am working with the Metro

Library from 8,000 miles away. I feel like I’ve come full circle.” Once she reached out to Metro Library, we had no doubt it was a perfect match. Hibbard said she especially looks forward to the cross-cultural exchange that will take place between our two libraries. She summed it up pretty well with this. “We often have stereotypes of each other, which may be romantic notions, but aren’t necessarily true,” she told me. “Not all Germans wear lederhosen and dirndls, guzzle beer and yodel. And not all Oklahomans ride horses, wear cowboy hats and gingham dresses or live in teepees. Not only is it a goal of ours to learn about the different cultures, but it’s to exchange resources, giving our patrons more available materials and learning tools.” So, how did the International English Library come to be, you ask? The British Forces established the International English Library in 1946 to bridge the gap between nations that were at war during World War II. The British Occupation Office created Die Brücke (meaning “the bridge”), a center for community gathering, cultural events and a library of English books. When budget cuts in the ’90s almost closed the library, a group of private citizens and regular visitors came together to form a non-profit and make it a volunteer-run organization. The library has continued to run on volunteer support since 1999 and represents Germany, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and many other countries. Customers from both Oklahoma and Germany stand to benefit from the partnership. I’m envisioning lots of great social media content and blog posts from both organizations. Imagine getting a virtual tour of the International English Library via
Instagram stories, or getting to ask our friends in Germany anything you want about their city, country and culture via Facebook Live. Melanie Schuth, also a volunteer at the International English Library, looks forward to educating Metro Library customers about many things, one of them being the city of Düsseldorf. “Düsseldorf is a city with quite a strong literary history,” Schuth said. “The German poet Heinrich Heine was born here, and so there’s a Heinrich Heine House actually where our library currently is located is Heinrich Heine Alley. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had an impact here as well, and we have the Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf. We would love to share that literary aspect with Metro Library customers.” Heather Zeoli, Metro Library’s director of development and volunteer services, has big plans for enriching and educating through this partnership. “It gives us an opportunity to engage with citizens and library services staff members in another country who have different views, practices, things they embrace, and because they’re an English-speaking library, we’re able to maximize our impact for our customers and their customers and share resources without the need for translation services.” The partnership will bolster Metro

Library’s efforts to educate about significant events in German history, such as World War II and the Holocaust, which the International English Library educates about as well. “We have the Henia Ring Schiff Holocaust Resource Collection at our Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, and with this library being in Düsseldorf, Germany, and part of the origin of that library being an outcome of World War II and de-Nazification, it’s a great opportunity to continue the conversation in this generation about how we destroy hate and how we build healthy communities that are free from prejudice and racism,” Zeoli said.
This Oklahoma-Düsseldorf connection could be the first step in a series of sister library partnerships for us. “We’d love to create more of these relationships,” Zeoli said. “This is a really great place for us to start.” Now, as for that toast to celebrate our libraries coming together? Remember to keep your eye contact while you do it (it’s a German custom!). Learn more about the International English Library by visiting internationallibrary.de/en/ and keep an eye out for the exciting content we’ll distribute as we partner with our new sister library. u
