National Poetry Month with Shakespeare, Taylor Swift and the Okie Poet p10 April Events p13
Dear Guests,
April is a time of celebration, reflection and connection at the Metropolitan Library System. As we welcome spring, we also invite you to explore the many opportunities your library offers—from engaging in powerful historical discussions and creating something new to honoring the legacy of poetry and literature. No matter what draws you to the library, there is something for everyone this month.
Join us for National Library Week from April 6-12! Libraries are vital to our communities, and at MLS, we offer books, digital collections, career resources, makerspaces, genealogy tools, and more. Whether you're starting a business, job hunting, raising kids, or enjoying retirement, your library is here to support you. Visit us and discover something new!
This month we are honored to welcome back Holocaust educator, award-winning producer and Respect Diversity Foundation founder Michael Korenblit. In conjunction with the Holocaust Resource Collection traveling in April and May, Korenblit will share his parents’ remarkable story of love, survival and resilience during the Holocaust. His deeply personal presentation reminds us of the importance of human rights education and understanding history to shape a more compassionate world. You can catch Korenblit’s presentation, “Until We Meet Again: The Story of Oklahomans Who Survived the Holocaust,” April 8 at Southern Oaks Library, April 21 at Northwest Library or May 17 at Belle Isle Library.
April is also National Poetry Month, and we are excited to celebrate Oklahoma-born poet Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel. Her evocative work captures the struggles and resilience of Dust Bowl migrants, providing an authentic reflection of working-class life. Biographer Betty Blanks will share insights into McDaniel’s journey, followed by poetry-writing workshops and open mic opportunities. Events are scheduled for April 28 at Midwest City Library and April 30 at Edmond Library.
April 19 is the 30th anniversary of the The Murrah Building Bombing in Downtown Oklahoma City. From April 1-19, the Warr Acres Library will have books, displays and take-home kits to help people remember those who were lost. We are also asking the community to donate small stuffed animals. These will be given to local police and fire departments to help comfort people in tough times, following the spirit of the Oklahoma Standard.
Libraries connect us to history knowledge, and one another. I encourage you to take part in these events and experience the many ways the Metropolitan Library System enriches our community.
Thank you for being a part of our library family.

National Library Week, April 6–12, is the perfect time to explore everything the Metropolitan Library System has to offer. From books and research tools to creative workshops and community events, libraries are hubs of learning, connection and inspiration. Haven’t signed up for a card yet? Now’s the time! Now is also the time to encourage friends and family to discover the library’s free resources and see what they’ve been missing.
As Albert Einstein said, “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.”
Drew and Kathy Mehner made it their 2024 goal to try new things and embrace creativity, attending free programs at MLS branches like yoga, needle felting, woodcarving, crocheting, paper quilling clubs, and dance lessons.
“I wanted to be more creative, and, when I explored the library’s programs, I found a wealth of opportunities across the Metro,” Kathy said.
They’ve kept their promise and have loved every minute. One of their favorite ongoing events is “Paint and Sip” at Del City Library, where Kathy, once nervous about painting, found it easy and welcoming. They also enjoyed an “Intro to Sourdough” class at Belle Isle, which they called “lifechanging” for teaching them a valuable skill.
Their library involvement has also inspired them to make the most of available resources—trying new smoothie recipes from cookbooks and experimenting with take-home spice kits from events like Luther Library’s “Spice Chronicles.” For them, learning doesn’t stop at the library doors—it continues at home. Drew encourages others to explore what libraries offer, from reading programs to hands-on workshops.
“The library has a wealth of instructive information, and
you’ll discover more about yourself and want to try new things,” he said.
It’s not just creative programs—they’ve been impacted by cultural events too. They recently loved attending the “Crowns Tea” event at Ralph Ellison Library, celebrating church hat traditions in the Black community, and hearing from Michael Korenblit, the son of Holocaust survivors, who returns to MLS libraries in April and May.
“We have had a wonderful time,” Kathy said. “We’ve learned a lot of new skills; we’ve made new friends; we even have a library text group where we share what’s coming up or what we’ve made or done.”
For Kathy, libraries have always been special—she used to take her own children to storytimes at the library, and now she brings her grandkids. This spring break, the Mehners took their grandkids to “Children Reading to Dogs” programs, “Animal Adventures” at Northwest Library and a variety of crafting events and springtime fun, fostering the same lifelong love for libraries.
“Libraries have always been a safe place of discovery and wonder,” Kathy said. “Every day, our lives are touched by the library—through a book we check out or a new skill we learn.”
We’re so thankful for library supporters like the Mehners. Our guests engage in countless ways—whether eagerly awaiting Winter Reading categories, joining book clubs, attending storytimes, buying tickets to Literary Voices®, enrolling little ones in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, or simply checking out books. However you support your library, we appreciate you.
This year’s National Library Week theme, “Drawn to the Library,” celebrates the many ways people engage with
libraries—and we can’t wait to share even more reasons to love yours!
The week-long celebration features a self-guided treasure hunt at Ralph Ellison Library, a book redesign competition at Downtown OKC Library reimagining titles like “Twilight” and “Oliver Twist,” and another book cover design activity at Del City Library, this time designing the cover of the book to your own life. Throughout the week, enjoy creative displays, teen events, movie screenings, comic workshops, and arts & crafts—all celebrating the library!
And right in the middle of it all, Jodi Picoult headlines Literary Voices® on April 9 at the Oklahoma Golf and Country Club! Proceeds support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, providing free books to kids. Get tickets at literaryvoices.org.
And that’s just the beginning! Visit metrolibrary.org/ nationallibraryweek or scan the QR code for the full lineup of events.

Join the Metropolitan Library System for a powerful series of events featuring the return of Holocaust educator, award-winning producer, activist, and Respect Diversity Foundation founder, Michael Korenblit. In conjunction with Yom Ha Shoah, an internationally recognized Holocaust remembrance day beginning at sundown April 23, Korenblit will present “Until We Meet Again: The Story of Oklahomans Who Survived the Holocaust,” based on his best-selling book, “Until We Meet Again: A True Story of Love and Survival.”
Raised in Ponca City by his parents who were Holocaust survivors, Korenblit offers a deeply personal perspective on history, resilience and human rights. His presentation transports audiences to Hrubieszow, Poland, in the late 1930s and 1940s, recounting the experiences of his parents, who were young sweethearts before the war. Separated in the camps, they promised to reunite if they survived—and against all odds, they did.
He shares the realities of the Holocaust, his family’s struggles, and what he calls the “three miracles” of their story: survival, reunion, and the discovery—39 years after liberation—that his mother’s brother was alive in England, despite the family believing he had perished. His story also details how, through an unexpected series of events, they found themselves in Ponca City, Oklahoma, where they built a life and remained for 63 years.
Through these presentations, Korenblit uses his parents’ story as a foundation for human rights education, connecting past events to current issues. He emphasized the importance of studying the Holocaust not only to understand its history but also to recognize its impact on other persecuted groups and to apply its lessons to modern challenges.
“It is so important that people study the Holocaust because it's got so many lessons dealing with the world around us today, whether it's dealing with bullying in schools and businesses or issues of genocide, even how we treat each other as human beings,” Korenblit said.
Until We Meet Again: The Story of Oklahomans Who Survived the Holocaust:
• April 8, 6 p.m. at Southern Oaks Library
• April 21, 6 p.m. at Northwest Library
• May 17, 2 p.m. at Belle Isle Library
How We Learn From the Past So We Can Truly Say “Never Again,” an Afternoon with Michael Korenblit:
• May 18, 2 p.m. at Downtown OKC Library
In addition to these talks, the Metropolitan Library System’s Holocaust Resource Collection, typically housed at the Downtown OKC Library, will travel throughout April and May. The collection, which has been part of the library for over twenty years, spent March at Southern Oaks Library, then moves to Northwest Library in April, Belle Isle Library in May, and then finally returns to Downtown OKC.
Korenblit recalls this collection’s introduction to the library system and stresses its importance in preserving Holocaust history.
“I think it's absolutely imperative that we have that resource, and that people know about the books they can go and read dealing with the Holocaust, with all kinds of books from fiction for kids to nonfiction for adults,” Korenblit said.
This event is free and open to all ages. Registration is recommended but not required. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with history and honor the stories of survival.

"An Ember in the Ashes "
Sabaa Tahir
Available formats: Book, Playaway, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
“Life is made of so many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after. Such moments are tests of courage, of strength.” -Sabaa Tahir
The “An Ember in the Ashes” series follows Elias, a member of the Empire’s ruling class, his best friend Helene, and Laia, whose people have been crushed by oppression. Taking inspiration from ancient Sparta as well as Arabian mythology, the series follows rival factions as they form alliances to defeat the greater enemy. My favorite thing about this series is that every character is nuanced. The villains and heroes both have moments of good and evil.
Tahir does not pull punches and puts her main characters through the wringer. I am still heartbroken in the best way.
If you loved the “Throne of Glass” series by Sarah J. Maas, I highly recommend you pick this up.

In this compact - but potent - illustrated essay, Robin Wall Kimmerer presents a worthy successor to her acclaimed “Braiding Sweetgrass” by inviting us to look at our modern world in a different light. So often, biomimicry is touted as holding the key to sustainable innovations in science and engineering, but what if we applied this same thinking to culture and economy?
Kimmerer offers her unique lens as an accomplished botanist and indigenous thinker to study how examples found in the natural world, like the serviceberry tree and its symbiotic relationship with birds, might give us clues to fostering that same reciprocity on a grander scale. What she terms as the “gift economy” in the natural world can be seen as a scalable model for our own communities; a model which can still flourish alongside our current market societies.
We don’t even have to look far for practical applications of this idea in our everyday lives: local libraries are blueprints for providing a communal benefit without profit motives. These testaments illuminate the way for a more respectful, mindful and sustainable approach to resource management. A gentle, but firm, call to action in the form of powerful prose and beautiful illustrations, “The Serviceberry” is a refreshing gift in and of itself.

"The Year of Magical Thinking"
Joan Didion
Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
Didion’s style of living can steer readers away from this personal nonfiction piece which reanalyzed the emotional and physical aftermath of her husband’s death, her own grief, and the care experienced throughout those years. Between excessively referencing her lavish lifestyle, unnecessarily name-dropping socialites and celebrities, Didion makes a point to overly repeat descriptions of wealth and fame.
Although distracting, this is the same book by which I created funeral seating arrangements based on people’s experience of you no matter their relational label, wherein attendees would be seated based on how you touched them or they you during your time alive.
For example, I am “a ray of sunshine” to some while others are mine. Nonetheless, in this world, they are considered acquaintances and strangers, but I find them intertwined in my life more than some family and friends. So, if anything, why aren’t these individuals celebrating my life in the front row instead of the back?
It’s a good question, but they won't. They won't know the time or place, and, though we have this tethered connection in life, we won’t in death. I do think my absence would be a passing through their minds. Maybe she'll think her “sunshine” switched gyms, or he'll hear why I don’t show up to Tuesday movies anymore, feel terrible, then move on. From the words of Didion: "Why do you always have to be right? Why do you always have to have the last word? For once in your life just let it go."
TLDR: Pretentious grieving at its finest, but is that so terrible?

Ever wonder the story behind the stories you hear at your library? How did the cheerful children’s librarian learn her trade? How did those books with relatable characters and diverse settings find their way to our shelves?
“Go Forth and Tell” is a tale of talent and triumph that chronicles the life of one extraordinary librarian, Augusta Baker, and her quest to make the library a place for all children to grow, learn, and play. The exaggerated but comforting and familiar illustrations speak to Baker’s lasting legacy as a pioneer for Black librarianship and representation in literature.
Augusta Baker’s story is a great tool to help children understand the value of libraries in our lives, as well as comprehend their sometimes flawed and storied histories. Go forth and read!

ways to celebrate. Whether you're flexing your creativity through Poem-a-Day activities, crafting new works at Bethany Library’s Blackout Poetry event, or testing your literary knowledge at Capitol Hill Library’s "Taylor Swift or Shakespeare?" game, there’s something for everyone.
To close out the month and kick off May, four special events will celebrate the life and work of Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel, the "Okie Poet," whose plainspoken, evocative poetry captured the struggles and resilience of Dust Bowl migrants.
Discover McDaniel’s poetry and her journey from Oklahoma to California during the Dust Bowl at these upcoming events. In 1936, McDaniel’s migration from a sharecropper shack in the Oklahoma hills to California’s San Joaquin Valley was filled with hardship as her family struggled in labor camps.
McDaniel began writing at age eight and was first published at 14 near her hometown of Stroud. However, it wasn’t until her mid-fifties, during the small press renaissance of the 1970s, that she gained wide recognition, publishing 50 collections over the next four decades.
McDaniel is known for her powerful reflections on workingclass life, rural hardship, and the dignity of labor. Her work provides an authentic account of the Dust Bowl era, with experiences paralleling John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.” McDaniel dedicated herself to preserving the stories of migrant families like hers, ensuring their experiences were not forgotten.
During these upcoming events, library attendees will hear from biographer Betty Blanks about her relationship with McDaniel and the shared migration stories of their families—McDaniel’s journey to California in 1936 and Blanks’ in 1947. The two
Blanks, raised in the San Joaquin Valley and a practicing lawyer in Visalia for over 30 years, had a deeply personal relationship with Wilma during the last 14 years of her life. After retiring from law, Blanks was encouraged to tell McDaniel’s story. She said she hopes new readers will find the same inspiration she found in McDaniel's writing.
“If you can get somebody to read a poem of Wilma's, they’re usually an immediate fan,” Blanks said, reflecting on McDaniel’s lasting impact.
Blanks will share excerpts from her intimate biography “Pick Up Your Name and Write,” inspired by McDaniel’s poem "Naming a Poet." The title tells the story of a young girl growing up in poverty, where someone calls out to her, "pick up your name and write," a command McDaniel followed throughout her life. Blanks’ biography explores McDaniel’s spiritual transformation, from her evangelical Pentecostal roots to Catholicism, and the family and community support that shaped her literary journey.
“This biography covers her experience as a young girl trying to find her voice as a writer,” Blanks said.
Through both this biography and the upcoming events, Blanks aims to honor McDaniel's powerful voice, share her admiration for McDaniel’s poetry, and connect to her migration story.
“I’m hoping to be able to interest people in her work again,” she said.
After Blanks’ presentations, OSU Oral History Professor and Librarian Karen Neurohr will discuss McDaniel’s literary legacy and lead participants in poetry-writing exercises inspired by her style. These programs, designed for high school students and
adults, offer an opportunity to explore McDaniel’s poetic voice and purchase Blanks’ biography on her life and work. Celebrate the power of poetry and the lasting impact of this Oklahomaborn poet, whose words continue to resonate today.

May 1 at 2–3 p.m. at Del City Library and 6-7:30 p.m. at Bethany Library
These events offer another opportunity to explore Wilma McDaniel’s legacy —while enjoying pie, a recurring symbol in McDaniel’s poetry. Representing sustenance, connection, and resilience during the Dust Bowl era, pie holds both cultural and practical significance. Blanks will read McDaniel’s pie-themed poems, celebrating its deeper meaning in her work.
