Summer Reading Program 2023

Learn more about Summer Reading and register for Beanstack by visiting metrolibrary.org/summerreading or scan the QR code!

Are you ready for the one resource guide to great summer activity for the whole family? If so, this issue of Info magazine is for you! It’s jam-packed of information about our many summer programs and events happening at our 19 locations as well as online. There are activities, resources, and events for all ages that can be done in person or online. Parents... you’re going to want to hang onto this to counteract the “we’re so bored” complaints that always seem to pop out of our little ones every summer!

You may be asking why we provide summer reading each year? Not only do we want to serve and build our community of readers and library guests, but it’s also proven that keeping up with regular reading (or listening to audiobooks) can help our youngest library guests to build their pre-reading skills as it prevents the “summer slide.” This happens when children who don’t take part in summer reading and learning activities by the 6th grade can end up as much as two years behind their peers when it comes to reading comprehension. This also contributes to challenges in other subjects in school, as reading is the core of everything we learn.

Along with the thousands of books, eBooks, and eAudioBooks, Metro also offers a wide range of programming specific to our summer months for all age levels, children and adults. I encourage everyone to attend at least one of our programs and/or Neighborhood Arts performances. These are great opportunities to come to experience outstanding local talent, to have fun and learn... and just like everything else at the library, all for free! And if it’s boiling hot outside, our libraries are always a great place to stop and keep cool! After all, we think you’re cool every time you stop by one of our locations or access our digital resources online! Our library system has been growing by leaps and bounds and we want you and your family to be a part of that growth. Last year we checked out more materials -- over 10 million items both print and digital -- but we also had more guest visits (5,433,169) at our branches in 2022, and we are on pace to exceed last year’s results!

I hope you’ll help us make “All Together Now” our 2023 Summer Reading Challenge a success. Visit your local library, go online to our website or click on any of our links through social media and get signed up to start participating today!

No Shushing in the Library!

Music programs and concerts cultivate learning and literacy.

Plato once said, “music is a more potent instrument than any other for education because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.”

Music has been recognized for its impact on physical, mental, and emotional health and its ability to unite people across age, culture and even language. It stands to reason that in a place like the public library with priorities like literacy, education, health, cultural enrichment, and civic engagement, music would be an integral part of the programming.

Music is “instrumental” to children and adults

Musician and librarian Maddie Razook hosts “Music Monday” at the Downtown Library. This program is designed for preschoolers and their caregivers and focuses on preliteracy through singing, music, and even sign language. Children and their caregivers gather ‘round with shakers, and bells, singing songs about the weather, silly hats, rollie pollies, and little green frogs.

“With singing, it really brings people in so they can participate,” Razook said. “It’s a great way to increase vocabulary and social and emotional skills.”

Music and literacy go hand-in-hand. In fact, there is an overlap of the neurological processes involved in music and reading, both of which engage areas of the brain used for vision, hearing, and comprehension.

When children hear music, the brain picks up on patterns and units of sounds that make up words called “phonemes,” an essential part of learning language. Learning music can also develop the auditory cortex, sharpen skills like rhythm perception, speech-in-noise perception, and auditory working memory, and facilitate communication between brain hemispheres.

Razook said she has witnessed children learn new concepts like the connection of sounds and letters. But more than anything, she has seen moments of joy.

“When I see kids enjoying music it definitely sparks something in me,” Razook said.

Punk Rock library

Throughout history, music has been used to entertain, protest, and educate. Punk music specifically has had a significant impact on history, design, and culture. Despite its “rabble-rousing” appearance, Punk’s “question everything” mentality and DIY inventiveness goes hand-inhand with education, critical thinking, individuality, and creativity.

The Oklahoma Underground Music Archive, located at the Downtown Library, is a collection of flyers, zines, merch, interviews, music, images, and other items from local Punk and Alternative music scenes across Oklahoma from the late 1970s and today. There is no shortage of variety with archives like Manic Panic hair dye, authentic Punk clothing held together by safety pins, records and CDs from bands like Victoria Vein and the Thunderpunks and concert posters held at local Punk venues like the Wreck Room, the Green Door, and the Bowery. This project is

spearheaded by Special Collections librarian and music enthusiast Meg Nance Coker.

“I love music,” Nance Coker said. “Music is a type of creating that is immediate to us and is relevant whether it’s a professional interest or purely a hobby. Music speaks to all of us.”

Programs like the Oklahoma Underground Music Archive bridge that gap between what is recreational and what is educational, showing that music and DIY culture can be just as essential as other seemingly more “scholarly or academic” studies.

There are a variety of archives online at metrolibrary.org/ok-uma. For anyone interested in learning more about a specific archive or even seeing it in person, they can email special.collections@metrolibrary.org. The Oklahoma Underground Music Archive is more than just a nostalgia project and is keeping history alive by including recent local musicians in their archives and playlists.

Queer Oklahoma

June is a month of celebrating found families, perseverance in the face of obstacles, and loving yourself and others’ authentic selves. That’s right, it’s Pride Month! Not in a deadly sin way though — this isn’t about arrogance or putting your ego over others. This is Pride in the sense of unearthing your complicated, messy, and honest self. It is about being true to that hard-earned understanding even when others might not approve or would prefer that this knowledge remained buried and forgotten. It’s a good thing to recognize, acknowledge, and even celebrate the things that make you, you. We’re humans, not cookie cutter confectionary. Even if being the same as others supposedly makes things easier like arranging boxes on a store shelf, that is not our shape or destiny. And sometimes that complicated, multifaceted identity includes being Queer.

Queer is a word that has been used as a slur. But, like many other words, it has also been reclaimed and made new for quite a while. Every person can decide whether they would use this word for themselves. The reason it’s being used here is relatively simple: it’s a deliberately inclusive word that is easy to say and has some staying power. Other terms may require a sense of humor, like rainbow mafia, or a bit of tongue twisting and conversation over who’s included or left out like the potential alphabet soup of GLBT, LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, LGBTQQIAP2, 2SLGBTQIA, or even QUILTBAG. Queer includes every one of these identities — and more — acknowledging that one person can be part of multiple letters of that alphabet. It reduces the pressure of itemizing every single part of your identity like a checkout receipt.

The Oklahoma music scene is alive and well. In fact, on July 20th at 6:00 pm, local underground musicians Inferna, Plushie, Shaka, and Primal Brain are joining for a face-melting concert at the Downtown Library called “Library Live.” Librarian Cory Castoe is leading the charge for this local show, featuring some of the biggest names in the local Hardcore and Punk scenes.

“I think Punk and Hardcore go hand-in-hand with the spirit of librarianship, as both strive to create spaces that are equitable and accepting of all people, so it makes perfect sense to me to combine those two areas into one,” Castoe said.

Play on, maestro

Music has an undoubtable transformation quality. It’s a window to another world, a look into the past and the future, and a chance to become someone new.

“I think reading and music in a public library are intertwined,” Librarian and viola player Jim Nimmo said. “They offer the reader or listener a sense of repose, an opportunity to get in touch with their own feelings and interpret how the text they’re reading or the music they’re listening to affects them.”

Whether guests are rocking out at a Punk show, enjoying live piano in the atrium, singing along with little ones, listening to music for free with library services, or taking a deep dive into the music history archives, the public library might just be the most rockin’ place to be.

Let’s be clear: there have been Queer people for as long as there have been people. Queer history has been a part of our history all along, from ancient tomb murals to today’s celebrity beer cans. If you aren’t aware of it or weren’t taught about it, that comes from much more recent prejudices and stigmas, including religious beliefs. Queer stories have often been cropped out of the picture and placed in opposition to religion, when Queer people have been included in and contributed to centuries of religious traditions, cultures, and customs. While recent religious beliefs have tried to separate Queer identities and faith, Queer identities and people have been there all along. Whether this strikes a chord with you or is entirely new and unknown, it’s something worth acknowledging and exploring together. That’s why we have the Queer Oklahoma project – to know and show the full spectrum of identities that have been a part of our history all along and to bring the full picture back into frame. An incomplete understanding of our past does not help us to build a better present or future for anyone. Happy Pride!

White Trash Warlock

Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook

White Trash Warlock is the first in a fantasy trilogy chronicling the magic-filled journey of Adam Binder. Between being raised in an abusive household and then committed to a mental institution as a child for the magic he possessed, Adam has not had an easy life. When his estranged brother contacts him for help, he must travel from his home in Oklahoma to Colorado, where he must face a force much older and more powerful than anything he has ever faced. Adam discovers new allies, old acquaintances, and a love interest in Vicente, forming a relationship that quickly became essential to my well-being. Slayton has created a cast of loveable, complex characters who live in a world that is easy to imagine existing alongside our own. Slayton utilizes themes of mending familial bonds, creating new ones, and staying true to yourself. The plot and writing had me hooked from the beginning; it is funny, adventurous, and deeply emotional. Did I mention it’s a fantasy series set in Oklahoma? I can’t wait to read it again, which is the highest recommendation I can give it.

The Lost Ticket

Available Formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook, Large Print

When Frank meets a girl on the bus in early 1960s London, he promises to meet her later but loses her number. It’s one chance encounter, but it changes his life and the lives of many he meets in years to come. Libby meets Frank some 60 years later. He’s still riding the bus, hoping to meet “his girl” again and making friends with those he meets on the bus, creating a found family. Meanwhile, Libby is new to London, fresh from a breakup with her boyfriend of eight years. Frank’s search is a chance for Libby to focus on something other than her sorrow. She jumps in with both feet, helping him find his mystery woman. Along the way she, too, finds friends – and much more – with Frank, Dylan, Esme, Sonny and others. The Lost Ticket has it all: love, loss, friendship, laughter, and tears. Frank is like a dear uncle who will always have a place in your heart.

The Banned Bookshop

of Maggie Banks

Shauna Robinson

Available formats: Book, eAudioBook, eBook, Large Print

Maggie needs to get out of her parent’s home and “find” a direction for her life. Maggie’s good friend, Rochelle, needs someone to manage Cobblestone Books - a bookstore in tourist town Bell River, which is the home of famous literary figure Edward Bell. It sounds like a perfect scenario for both friends, but Maggie doesn’t know the rules...yet.

Limited by the books she’s allowed to sell and rules as antiquated as the owner, Maggie gets creative and secretly sponsors money-making activities after hours in the back room of the bookstore. It works… until her secret is discovered, and she is shut down by the owner. But Maggie has gained a following that no longer wants to play by the rules in Bell River. Can they defeat the owner?

Throw a romance and several mysteries into the story line, and you have an adventure that will keep you riveted until the last page. Does Maggie save the bookstore? I’m not telling. Read this book!

Orpheus Girl

Brynne Rebele-Henry

Available formats: Book, Book on CD, eAudioBook, eBook, Playaway

Classical myth meets modern hardship in Brynne Rebele-Henry's Orpheus Girl when Texas-born Raya is discovered to be in a romantic relationship with her best friend, Sarah. Rumors surge through their small town like wildfire until both are sent to the same conversion therapy compound. Determined to save herself, Sarah, and the other teens sent to the program, Raya compares her journey to that of Grecian Orpheus, a poet who travels through Hades to save his lost love.

A deeply raw exploration of the daily abuse many young people experience in gay conversion camps, Orpheus Girl's language switches between expressive prose, often evoking classical poetry and detached, spare descriptions of Raya's experience. Orpheus Girl is a brief, searing exploration of identity, devotion, and adversity that will interest anyone interested in LGBTQ+ young adult fiction, reinterpretations of classic tragedy, or a story of intensely dedicated first love.
