Sometimes as library staff researching a topic we come across an odd little fact that, at first, seems to be
suitable for just a moment of idle curiosity—but then, the more we think about it the more we realize just how life changing it can be.
Take the month of May, for instance. Did you know that in the Southern Hemisphere, May is considered one of the autumn months, kind of
like November up here in the north. Think how Einsteinian that is: time depends entirely on where you are when you look at your watch. Think about it. You’re standing on Oklahoma’s western border at one
minute after midnight, take one step into New Mexico and suddenly it’s yesterday. And did you know that there is one community in Oklahoma that is always on Mountain Time? Kenton, way up at the tip of the Panhandle.
And on Mars, a day lasts 24 hours and 39 minutes. How confusing is that? Fortunately for you, every day is the right day for MLS programs and services. If you don’t believe it, take a look at the Calendar of Events in this issue and just be glad that we don’t have any libraries on Mars.

DOME ON “Let architects sing of aesthetics that bring rich clients in hordes to their knees. Just give me a home, in a great circle dome where stresses and strains are at ease. Roam home to a dome, no banker would back with a dime. No mortgage to show, no payments to go, where you dream, dwell and spend your own time.” – Buckminster Fuller (sung to the tune of “Home on the Range”)

THE RANGE by Larry Johnson riting these historical vignettes sometimes involves divination because they link our Oklahoma Images stories to modern events when possible, but events move quickly in our modern socially-networked world and these articles are written weeks in advance. As this story is about the yet-again-endangered “Gold Dome,” it may be a memoriam by the time it sees print. Likewise this isn’t an advocacy piece on the demolition debate, as we take the long view rather than sides. In 1958, Citizens’ Bank, which had been around town since mud The Gold Dome lobby. streets and hitchin’ posts, approved the geodesic (i.e. the geometry of curved surfaces) dome design of their new bank on the southeast corner of NW 23 and Classen. Domes like this were new then, patented by math giant Buckminster Fuller in 1954. And for a city that has so many 1/3 replicas of other cities’ landmarks it represented a bold step into the future. I wish that I could describe the scientific beauty of these domes the way mathematicians and engineers do. Most of it is centered on the mystic properties of the triangle and the wonders of tessellation which I admire but cannot comprehend (I’m still amazed a light comes on when I flip a switch). Essentially these domes were posited as the answer to postwar building crises around the world. They could be assembled in hours and transported by helicopter. They require a fraction of normal building materials, use 30% less energy and are remarkably strong and light. In fact the larger they are
the less stress on the building and the lighter they become. Apparently with enough heat rising inside they essentially float. Our city’s gold dome was the fifth geodesic dome ever constructed and the first for commercial purposes. It was the first installed above ground – most of the domes rested on or in the ground but ours was placed atop a traditional structure because of the vaults and drive-up window. Our dome was constructed in about a week and is made of 165 interlocking triangles of anodized gold aluminum reinforced by what was once a black aluminum exoskeleton. It was the first building to use Kaiser Aluminum’s gold-colored product but over the last fifty years the black and gold have given over to a mottled silver look. Interested in learning more about these engineering marvels? Do a search in YouTube for the words: buckminster fuller dome home. You can find a clip of him singing “Roam Home to a Dome” and clips of various domes, some carried by helicopters. There’s an idea – if the site is to be razed, then maybe a helicopter could whisk the dome off to a new location!
Larry “Buddy” Johnson has been with MLS since 1998. Not only a librarian at the Downtown Library, he is the brilliant mind behind the Oklahoma Images database which is a collection of pictures and essays that illustrate the history of central Oklahoma. ON THE SHELF
Battleborn: Stories by Claire Vaye Watkins These days more and more I think I should not expose my beautiful unborn niece to Dumbo. Suppose she is struck by the cruelty of those lady elephants, the ones that taunt Jumbo Junior. Suppose she wants to know whether there really are adults as mean and selfish as those lady elephants. Suppose she asks, Well, Auntie, are there? I tend to avoid short stories. I read fast and they are over so quickly, I barely have time to form a relationship with the characters. Yet I had no trouble connecting with the variety of personalities in this collection: Thomas, who explores his obsession with debris from an auto accident through letter writing; Manny and his yearning for a visiting Italian; the reluctant rescue of the teenaged Magda by the elder Harris; and my favorite: Natalie, a circulation clerk at the public library, who archives
reviewed by Jana Hausburg her breakup with Ezra by staging a series of imaginary dioramas. A story titled “The Diggings” stayed with me for days as I contemplated how a simple act of kindness could result in tragic, unintended consequences. Watkins grew up in the Nevada desert, and most of her stories are set in the territory with which she is familiar. Other settings are not so common: the Manson Family compound, a chicken ranch just outside of Las Vegas. These stories are unsentimental and stark, much like the landscape Watkins describes, and a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. With her incredible book knowledge and sharply-honed survivor skills, Jana Hausburg is humanity’s best chance in a zombie apocalypse. She is also the manager at the Capitol Hill Library.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits
reviewed by Doug Bentin Do you ever check out a kid’s movie on DVD and then wind up enjoying it as much as your kid does? Well, you don’t even have to have any kids to get a big kick out of The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Based on the book The Pirates In An Adventure With Scientists by Gideon Defoe (you can check the book out, too) this animated film plays beautifully for viewers of all ages. Sail with the Pirate Captain as he really, really wants to win Pirate of the Year honors—so much so that he accompanies a pre-fame Charles Darwin into the court of Queen Victoria—who hates pirates. Darwin’s interest is the Captain’s parrot Polly, actually the last living dodo. 6 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n May 2013
Many of the verbal jokes will fly over the heads of the little ones, but that’s okay because the visual ones will have them cackling like, well, dodos. The picture was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar last year but didn’t win, mainly because it wasn’t made by Pixar. It did come from Aardman Animation, the loonies behind Wallace and Gromit, and Chicken Run. Forget you’re an adult for 88 minutes. It’ll do you good. Doug Bentin edits and writes in info magazine.

Porch Lights by Dorothea Benton Frank Jackie McMullen was an army nurse in Afghanistan until her husband, a New York fireman, died while trying to save “a bunch of low-life crackheads.” Now Jackie and her severely-depressed, ten-year-old son, Charlie, are going home to summer with her mother, Annie Britt. Home is Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, where Annie lives on the beach a few miles from her husband, who left eleven years earlier but never divorced her. On the island, Charlie makes friends with another family’s children, explores the beach with Annie, and begins to learn about the island’s connection to Edgar Allen Poe. His grandfather takes him fishing, and he gets a job dog-sitting for Annie’s neighbor, Steve. Charlie decides he is never going back to New York, which is exactly what his grandparents and Steve want,

reviewed by Phyllis Davidson too. Jackie refuses to admit that she and Charlie need the family, and the family needs them. Then a monster hurricane sets its sights on Sullivan Island. I’m happy to know that there are nine more Lowcountry Tales yet to be enjoyed. That’s a good thing, because I’ve found that, like Charlie, I’m not ready to leave Sullivan’s Island either. This title is also available in large print and in digital and audio formats.
Phyllis Davidson is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. She is the editor of a family newsletter, teaches genealogy classes to customers at the library, and delves into her own family history outside the Library walls.

You Are Not So Smart by David McRaney You Social Science and Humanities majors will have no interest in this book whatsoever. Why? Because it’s Psychology 101. But for us Business and Engineering types, or anyone else with not much training in this field, it is a real eye-opener. Don’t let the title put you off – it’s just a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that people, including you and me, are not exactly what we think we are. McRaney started with a blog - youarenotsosmart. com – that grew into this book: 48 chapters of mostly short insights that actually leave you wanting more. Each chapter begins with a misconception and then the truth, followed by discussion. For instance, the chapter on The Bystander Effect begins with the misconception: “When someone is hurt, people rush to their aid.” But the truth is: “The more people who

reviewed by Lloyd Lovely witness a person in distress, the less likely it is that any one person will help.” And the chapter on Confirmation Bias begins with the misconception: “Your opinions are the result of years of rational, objective analysis,” then the truth: “Your opinions are the result of years of paying attention to information that confirmed what you believed, while ignoring information that challenged your preconceived notions.” These counter-intuitive truths explain a lot of life’s mysteries. I’ve seen other people make these mistakes consistently. I can only hope that this book can help other people improve. Lloyd Lovely is the MLS Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Support, which makes him feel important. Please don’t tell him the truth. May 2013 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n 7

SCIENCE FICTION/ SCA
Redshirts by John Scalzi The starship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union, is the most famous ship in the galaxy. For Ensign Andrew Dahl, being assigned to the Intrepid seems like a career-making stroke of luck. But before long, bizarre events start piling up. While predictable logic governs the rest of the universe, life aboard the Intrepid seems to eerily parallel the tropes of an ancient science fiction television show. A show where reckless commanding officers take insane gambles that always pay off, impossible scientific problems are solved by reversing the polarity…and where the red-shirted ensigns hardly ever make it out alive. Scalzi spends most of the book running rational characters into situations governed by classic science fiction clichés, generally with hilarious results. While this approach could easily lend itself to shallow parody, Redshirts rescues itself by taking the concept two or

reviewed by Todd Podzemny three logical steps further. As Ensign Dahl and his fellow cannon fodder probe more deeply into the mystery of the Intrepid, they confront some mindbending questions about the nature of fiction and reality. Redshirts is an easy recommendation for fans of cheesy old sci-fi, especially anyone who just took offense at the word “cheesy.” It combines smart absurdist humor with real action and tension, and tops it off with more thought-provoking philosophy than the premise should really allow. Just remember, if at any point you think you’ve got the plot figured out, things are about to get a whole lot weirder. Todd Podzemny is the assistant manager of the Edmond Library. He is a librarian by day and by night he is also a librarian, but a more casually dressed one. FICTION/

The Middlesteins by Jami Attenberg Jami Attenberg’s The Middlesteins is about a family coping with its self-destructive matriarch, Edie. Once a beautiful and brilliant lawyer, she wrecks her health and career by numbing her intense emotions with food. By her 60’s, she is jobless, morbidly obese and unconcerned about hurting herself and everyone who cares for her. Her husband Richard eventually divorces her, causing a huge rift with the rest of the family, which is the novel’s central conflict. Edie’s biggest problem is that she never got past her childhood idea that “food was made of love, and love was made of food.” She finds some happiness later in life with the perfect boyfriend for her: a Chinese restaurant owner and cook who prepares her favorite foods. Initially the characters seem unappealing. Gluttonous Edie, selfish Richard, angry, possibly alcoholic daughter Robin, dimly cheerful son Benny and his controlling 8 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n May 2013

But the more we learn about them, the more we realize they are just trying to deal with life as best they can, and we develop sympathy for them. Attenberg’s writing is brisk and vivid, encapsulating huge swaths of complicated emotion in a few brief sentences. She also jumps forward and backward through time, briefly showing what happens to these flawed but lovable characters later on. The last line shows the complexity of this family: “No one would have figured they would have much in common except being family. But they were close to the end.”
Alexis Whitney is the Adult Services librarian at the fabulous new Almonte Library. She is usually reading three or four books concurrently, which makes her stay up way too late at night.
Access Video on Demand:
Whatever, Wherever, Whenever oey Shelton is a librarian at the Ralph Ellison Library and—don’t spread this around—he’s in love. He recently called Susan Ryan, who purchases subscriptions for the material in our database collection, to tell her how much he likes our AVOD database. That’s Access Video on Demand. “It’s really helpful for customers,” he told her. “When they come in for a DVD on a certain subject and the library doesn’t have one, I can refer them to AVOD.” There you have it—high praise from a library pro. But what is AVOD, exactly? It’s state-of-theart streaming video that you can watch whenever you want to on your computer, or whatever device you use to access our digital services. It gives you instant access to a collection of over 9,000 educational and cultural videos, and over 600 new ones are added annually, that can be viewed using a computer with a high speed Internet connection. No more misplacing DVDs, or having to put them on reserve and then waiting for them. AVOD is a great source for putting educational and artistic material at your fingertips. And it’s free. Here’s what streaming does: it allows you to access high-quality video content via the Internet. When you choose which video you want to watch, you can begin viewing it
immediately because the entire video file doesn’t download at once. While you watch the first part, the rest is being downloaded. And here’s a bonus that will come in handy for instructors: when MLS pays for the subscription to AVOD, we are also paying for public performance rights. That means that the video can be shown to a class, and that the students can then access the video to watch again on their own time. There are 31 subject areas so you’re bound to find something of interest. Ken Burns and Rick Steves are well represented for history and travel buffs. I just came across a documentary called “Monsters from the Id: Anxiety and Optimism in 1950s Science Fiction,” which is divided into 21 chapters, any of which can be accessed separately. And here’s a full length performance of La Bohème from the Royal Opera House, in case I need a little “Quando me’n vo” for lunch. Check it out by going to the Databases section on our webpage, www.metrolibrary.org. Click on Images/Photos and select AVOD. Then the choice is all yours.

Aficionados of the swing era of music might have heard the 1938 Paul Whiteman/Jack Teagarden recording of “Mutiny in the Nursery,” with this lyric:

n 2013 the kids are still swingin’, but now we’re helping them jitterbug a new way—they’re learning life skills and having a ball doing it with a nation-wide early literacy program called “Mother Goose on the Loose.” The program was created and developed by the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore over 15 years ago. It’s based on research demonstrating that children learn best when they are taught utilizing routine and repetition in a nurturing environment. “As soon as we discovered this program, we knew we had to try it,” said Lisa Wood, MLS Children’s Services Coordinator. “It’s been successful at every library around the country that has the program. Plus, we’re always glad to hear from participants that they’d bring their kids even if it weren’t education just because it’s so much fun.” The program’s website, at www.mgol.net, describes it like this: “Mother Goose on the Loose’ uses a variety of activities, such
as rhymes, songs, puppets and instruments to foster speech development, motor coordination, self-confidence, and sensitivity to others.” It’s designed to help young children, infants to three years, prepare for school by developing a love for learning, social and emotional skills, fine and gross motor skills, language skills, and general knowledge. And it’s not just the kids who have a lot to learn. Parents and caregivers can pick up valuable information and developmental tips so they can continue to use MGOL techniques at home. Look for “Mother Goose on the Loose” at Capitol Hill Library, Del City Library, and Warr Acres Library in May, as well as such other early learning programs as “Toddler Time,” “Baby Bounce,” “Urban Sprouts,” “Music for Babies,” and many others at MLS libraries near you. There’s no mutiny in our nursery—the kids are swingin’ out, and loving it.

Neuburger bases her craft ideas on the knowledge that all kids like stories, and many of them like to invent their own tales in addition to just listening to someone else’s. Find out how to make a storytelling jar and idea grab bags. Story walks and journaling are just two of many ways to help older kids exercise their imaginations. Avoid the disaster of a boring summer. Take a look.
If you’re concerned about disaster of a more permanent kind— giant meteors striking earth, pandemics, zombie hordes, etc.— Sheridan tells you how to prepare. He offers seriously good advice, even if his delivery is a little tongue-in-cheek. I mean, he took advice from a former gang member on how to steal a car. Well, you never know . . . it pays to be prepared. What good would it do you, he asks, if you survived the initial disaster and then died a few days later because you didn’t know how to start a fire?
