REVIEWS When you think of Echo & the Bunnymen, you probably think of Ian McCulloch, the full-lipped lead singer. This isn't him. Will Sergeant is the one who makes the fuzzy, jangly guitar sounds. His book is about everything that led up to how he made them and how we got to hear them. Not so much in a technical sense, but in a comfortable yet riveting conversation involving genealogy, the harshness of lower class Liverpool life, a casual indictment of educational and vocational systems, and the social release of the club scene. Sergeant has known names that will capture our attention (cough Julian Cope cough) and relates other interesting characters, places, and situations in the life of a young musician. He is unflinching; his words read like a novel. The book ends just as the Bunnymen become a four piece around 1980, but the good news is Sergeant's second book "Echoes" should be out in the US in May 2024. Even if you don't listen to Echo & the Bunnymen, you may enjoy Sergeant's colorful life and find him inspirationally determined and an adept raconteur.

Listening to God’s Country is like opening up your soul and venting all the repressed anger and hate you feel about everything. There is a clear understanding that we can no longer simply Rage, as the Machine has never cared. If we wish to exorcize our deepest held anger, we must make it clear to the widest audience possible. Chat Pile is our drum major, and God’s Country is a resounding down beat

REVIEWS What a long, strange trip it's been. Whoops, sorry, wrong reference. Or is it? David Johansen performed with the proto-punk New York Dolls around 1973. He released stylistically different solo albums in the late '70s and early '80s. He transformed into the swingin', somewhat salsa Buster Poindexter circa '87-'97. Johansen came back with The Harry Smiths 2000-2002, focusing on jazzy blues. Then came a Dolls reunion, then... In "Personality Crisis," directed by Martin Scorsese, Johansen performs as Buster performing as Johansen at Cafe Carlyle in New York City. The audience is sprinkled with familiar faces; in between songs we are regaled with stories and past footage. I'm a Dolls fan. I would have loved more hard-hitting Dolls, less saxophone and meandering. Yet I found myself wishing I could have been in that room, soaking in Johansen's ambience, because his persona comes across so powerfully it doesn't seem to matter what music he's making. I don't mind that he loves opera, which I can't stand - because he *loves* it, and his passion is what makes everything magic. His uniqueness and intransigence is what makes him such an interesting artist. Is this DVD for everyone? No; it's a slow jazzy evening in an expensive room with people who wear tailored clothes. And yet I'd watch "Personality Crisis" again just for a lesson - in acceptance, in history, in standing one's ground - from Uncle Poin... uh, Uncle David.

A Talk With: Mad Honey With their highly anticipated debut and album release on September 22nd via Deathwish Inc. (Satellite Aphrodite), OKC quintet Mad Honey embraced a darker, more saturated rock sound that Brooklyn Vegan calls "fuzzy, pillowy." Jarvix had a quick chat with founding members Tiff and Branden to discuss.

Listen to/buy Satellite Aphrodite now

Who/What is Mad Honey to you? Mad Honey are first and foremost good buddies, and secondly we are a rock and roll band. Our music is very special to us, and I think at the core of that is a deep respect for each other, and a desire to be silly together. After years of build-up, how did you know that this was the right time to unleash your first proper LP? For years, we were just trying to discover who we were as a band, and what sound we wanted. We tried lots of things until it felt right. I think we had to go through a lot of growing pains to find that sound. Do you have any thoughts on the shoegaze genre label as it has been used over the years and toward Mad Honey? I think that genre has been way over saturated and somewhat lost in translation over the years. The only aspect that is remotely “shoegaze” to our sound is our guitar tones. We definitely try not to fit in a box as far as genre goes and I think you can hear that throughout our whole discography. So we’ll claim whatever as long as it makes sense, but we aren’t exclusively making shoegaze music. - Branden

Let's talk "Blue and You", one of your earliest singles with so many fans that an unofficial YouTube upload with over 3 million views is swimming in comments proclaiming it a masterpiece. Will Mad Honey ever wade into those nostalgiatinged synth waters again? Possibly! Mostly I think we’re about moving forward as far as our sound goes. That took us by surprise though and has helped us reach a lot of fans so we’re grateful. Spoiler alert: we will most likely never play that song or any older ones again. - Branden If Mad Honey had a mascot, what would it be? The mascot of Chichibu City in Saitama, Japan, is named Potekuma-kun, look him up, that would be the basic idea. What I would GIVE to do a collab with that sweet bear. - Tiff If you could throw any event at your local library, what would it be? A bake-off.

AMA, Roadies Edition Favorite Halloween theme songs or covers? Harley Poe - The Hearse Song & Rezurex - Dia De Los Muertos -Cory Bantic A bit of a lame one, but Twin Skeletons by Fall Out Boy is such a vibe. For covers, OBVIOUSLY the Sanderson Sisters’ version of I Put a Spell on You. -Primal Opossum I have SO MANY spooky playlists (including one that is kinda a few days long)... but I do love Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ cover of Science Fiction/Double Feature, Gary Paxton’s Spooky Movies, and Baby You’re a Haunted House by Gerard Way. -Jackalope Granny Anarchy: I have an entire playlist (about 80?) songs and it's very hard to pick a favorite. I guess some of my favorites are: Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead Book of Love (cover: Mike Oldfield) - Tubular Bells David Bowie - Scary Monsters Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting PJ Harvey - Meet za Monsta Joy Division - Dead Souls Metric - Monster Hospital Ministry - Every Day is Halloween Siouxie & the Banshees - Spellbound TV on the Radio - Wolf Like Me
