56-day Murajapam at Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple commenced on November 21, 2019 and would culminate with the Lakshadeepam on January 15, 2020, the day of Makara Sankranthi. The rituals and grand celebration have their roots in the magnificent history of Travancore.

T
he Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple has been reverberating with the recitation of veda manthraa since November 21st as part of the Murajapam held every six years. Heralding the advent of Murajapam, there was a pushpavrishti (aerial showering of flowers) from the skies on November 20th in and around Thiruvananthapuram. The temple will shine at the Lakshdeepa Prabha marking the culmination of the 56 days long Murajapam. Lakshadeepam is a major unique festival celebrated at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The entire temple is adorned with lamps.

On the day of Makarasankranthi, January 15, 2020, Lakshadeepam will be organised in all its splendour and grandeur. Lakshadeepam is a festival of 100,000 oil lamps. The Murajapam is the ritual chanting of the mantras of the four Vedas by Vedic scholars hailing from various corners of the country in eight muras or rounds, each of which is of seven-day duration. This festival is celebrated once in six years. The Lakshadeepam Vilambara Vilakku was installed at the eastern gate of the temple ahead of the Murajapam Lakshadeepam festival on November 19th. Moolam Tirunal Ramavarma of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore lighted the lamp. The Murajapam combined with Lakshadeepam traces its origin to a date more than 250 years ago. The ceremonies that began during the reign of Maharaja Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma are now being performed with minor changes. On Makarasankranthi day in 1750AD (which was in mid-January 1750AD) the first Lakshadeepam was organised by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, who conquered all the neighbouring principalities up to Kochi and expanded Venad into Travancore. He celebrated the Lakshadeepam after conducting a 56-day Murajapam for the first time with the participation of Vedic scholars from all parts of Kerala and South India. On January 3, 1750, he surrendered his crown, sword and the entire country of Travancore at the feet of Lord 16
December 2019
Padmanabha Swamy. This act of relinquishment is known as Thrippadidanam. From that day onwards, the Supreme Ruler of Travancore is Lord Padmanabhaswamy. Marthanda Varma vowed to rule the country as the servant of Lord Padmanabha Swamy, assuming the honorific title of Padmanabha Dasa. During the 56-day period of Murajapam, mantras from the Vedas are continuously chanted in eight cycles or muras. Each cycle ends on the eighth day with a sacred procession in which the idol of the Lord is carried on the shoulders of the priests in a decorated vehicle. This sacred procession, which moves through the Seevelippura is known as the Muraseeveli. The idol of Lord Padmanabha Swamy in the first Mura Seeveli on the first day of Murajapam is carried in Simhasana Vahanam and the last and the eight on the day of Lakshadeepam on Garuda Vahanam. A darshan of the Lord on January 15, 2020 will be equal to “Vaikunta Priyadarshanam. The Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, which is a Mahakshethra and is one of the 108 Vishnu shrines in India, identified as Divya Deshas or Thiruppathies by the great saints, came into being at least 5,000 years ago. The idol of the Lord in the temple contains 12,008 shaligram-silas brought from the Gandaki river in Nepal, and is made of a unique amalgam known as Katusarkara Yogam. This mix is made of divine earth
brought from various parts of the country and a combination of various ayurvedic compounds. Lord Vishnu lies on the serpent Ananta in Yoga nidra. From his navel rises Brahma and Siva is under his right hand. The rituals performed in the temple are elaborate and broader than in other temples. There are daily three full poojas from dawn to night. Two Ulsavams (Painkuni and Aipasi), and two Kalasams are celebrated here. The Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple shot into prominence for its treasures when it was declared by the Book of Guinness Records as the richest Hindu temple in the world, following the opening of the hidden vaults of the temple on June 27, 2011, after an order of the Supreme Court of India. Of the six vaults numbered as A to F, the B Vault has
not been ordered to be opened by the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The valuables in the form of ornaments and artifacts in gold and precious stones have since been inventoried and kept under safe custody and special security. The Supreme Court has not ordered to evaluate the valuables. However, based on unofficial sources the Guinness Book of records has named the Temple as the world’s Richest Hindu Temple. As part of the celebration of Murajapam – Lakshadeepam of 2020, an ambitious project to cover the Sreekovil roof of Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple with gold at an estimate of Rs.9 crore has been initiated. The temple administration is to complete the gold covering before the commencement of Murajapam – Lakshadeepam. December 2019

LIFE
Human Determination Knows No Bounds :
The Story of K. S. Vikraman 20
December 2019
T
he power of human determination is limitless, amazing beyond words. What else can explain phenomena, not persons, like K.S.Vikraman? Despite his farewell, Stephen Hawking, the scientist who defeated destiny through his determination and his seat have not faded from the memory of the world. He was the one who, seated in his wheelchair, taught the world about time and grey holes through his own conclusions. Stephen Hawking’s mobility was paralyzed by Motor Neuron Disease or MND (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which is loss of muscle tone in the body. At Thiruvananthapuram there was a Malayali who suffered from the same disease, and lying on his bed, did wonders in the business world by rolling his eyes. He was K.S.Vikraman who managed a business of Rs 50 crore a year. Vikraman, who lost his mobility and speech abilities, continued to lead the business by giving instructions through a computer tracking device (Eye Gaze Device). Doctors who treated him say that Vikraman is the only businessman in the world to stay motivated and remain active in business in spite of such an ailment. Vikraman managed the multi-crore business of Jayashree Travels & Tours Company which has branches in five countries, Vivin Luxury Suites in Thiruvananthapuram and Al Alif Printing Press in Ajman. It was
Vikraman, who lost his mobility and speech abilities, led the business by giving instructions through a computer tracking device (Eye Gaze Device). when his business was bagging awards after awards that the ailment attacked Vikraman. Later, with the strength of his mind, he moved on from where he had lost everything. He fought for life, determined that he would not get tired. With the support of his wife and children, he managed the business lying on bed using only his eyes and led the company from success to success. Vikraman’s eyes conveyed a strong message that if you decide that you will not fail, then no power can. A business journey starting from Ajman Vikraman was born on the Independence Day of 1956 as the son of late Shankaran and Janaki of Kunnathu Veettil at Piravanthur, Kollam. He had his schooling in Kerala and got a job. In the meantime he married to Vinaja. Vijayashree, Jayashree and Srikanth are his three children. In 1989, he flew to Ajman with December 2019

his uncle. There he started AlAlif printing press. It was a huge success. Vikraman wanted to grow his business in Kerala. The next step was in the tourism sector. Jayashree Travels & Tours Company was launched in 2000 which made huge profits leading to the opening of branches in various countries. Presently the branches are in Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi), Delhi, Dubai, Ajman, China and UK. Vikraman was a well-known businessman who won India government’s Best Overseas Tour Operator Award, Tourist Transport Operator National Award, Kerala government’s Overseas Tour Operator Award, Excellence Award of Global Malayalee Council etc. It was in December 2010, when he was getting ready to start dream projects like Vivin Luxury Suits, that the disease started attacking Vikraman. 22
December 2019
Thorough knowledge of the disease, a major factor Initially it was thought the disease was arthritis which affects the bones. He also sought treatment for it. But Vikraman began to educate himself about the disease as it was not cured. The study was computer-assisted. Suspecting MND, he consulted doctors who confirmed the illness. The patient is to remain bed ridden for life losing control of the muscles completely. The instructions from the brain will not reach the muscles though brain’s functioning won’t be affected. At a moment when anyone would normally get shattered, Vikraman was not ready to give up. He started searching the internet for information about the disease and its treatment. At the same time he went on purchasing equipments which will have to be used in future through Amazon. When his son Srikanth

WE NEVER SAY GOOD-BYES TO GREAT MENTORS AND GREAT LEADERS
H
onestly, where do I even start? One of the many reasons this becomes an impossible task is an inspiration that come in many forms and has many faces. Some leaders are great because of how they persevere with a dream in spite of their circumstances, only to go on and achieve extraordinarily that they continue to be revered long after their demise. While others are stuck by their values and protest for the rights of others, even when it jeopardises their own freedom‌ not mention their own lives. Mr Vikraman, M.D. of Jayshree Travels, was one among the leaders who have turned all the weaknesses and the failures into the most successes and created his own kingdom with confidence, determination and will power. He was always a warrior and he fought throughout. He even proved that medical science was wrong. He worked against his fate despite all predictions. He was a true winner and a clear cut example for many who are looking for inspiration in life. He unlocked achievements even while being bedridden. Despite challenges and hurdles, he was a game maker who created a new benchmark in the industry.
He was a good friend of mine. The important conversations we have had at his Dubai office, sharing moments with him during his difficult times and achievements will always be important memories with me. He has conquered our hearts and will always be remembered for the year to come. One of his greatest achievements was the National award for Jayshree travels which, as an individual tour company competing with the giants in the tourism industry at that point of time was truly remarkable. Beyond those achievements as an individual Mr. Vikram was always a motivation. Cannot conclude my words without appreciating his family and staff who were by his side, committed, loyal and supporting him to achieve all that they have for so many years and to be with him till the end.

asked why all these were required, he got his father’s reply that he would know it in due course. To China for treatment Knowing from the internet that treatment for MND is available in China, Vikraman flew to China. He returned to Kerala after undergoing treatments like acupuncture. In the meantime, he underwent massage to get his arm muscles set right. But soon things got out of hand. The disease became acute. His later life was in a wheelchair which he procured against online order. Meanwhile, breathing became difficult and an artificial respiratory device was attached. Wheelchair with belt was also used. The disease was increasing day by day. He was admitted to a few major hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram. In the meantime, Vikraman came to know about Tobii Dynavox eye tracking device through the hospital nurse. The rest was very fast. From a point where everything was felt to be lost, back to a busy official schedule in no time. An ICU-like room was set up at home for giving best care to Vikraman by his wife and children. The body was fitted with a V-pop machine for artificial breathing and equipments for feeding on powdered food and semi-solid food. The eye-tracking device was connected to the bed. Vikraman’s eye sight was connected to an Internet-connected device using a sensor. The device is a sophisticated computer. Vikraman learnt to use the tracking device within a week. He had to just look at the letter to be typed for half a second and 24
December 2019
it got typed. Typed words can then be heard across the device. He could also talk on mobile. Vikraman could listen to anything, because he could hear. It was lying in this condition that he started his dream project Vivin Luxury Suites in Thiruvananthapuram. He traveled in his own caravan. Vikraman himself designed the interior of the caravan and arranged the facilities for an MND patient to travel without difficulty. He learnt everything from the internet. The marketing executives of the eye tracking device company Tobbii Dynavox approach other patients using a video which shows how Vikraman ran his business lying on bed.! Eyes that find everything Vikraman had an eye for anything and every thing. He used WhatsApp as a main medium for his communication. Even instructions on matters like what welcome drink was to be given to the guests at the suites were given by WhatsApp. The Luxury Suites and Vikraman’s Room were inter connected through CCTV. Mobile phone was also connected to his device. Vikraman also used to send messages in Malayalam using Google Translator. Vikraman was an avid cricket fan. For items needed, Vikraman would search the Internet and order them online through Amazon. Often, family members knew only when they arrived at home. Vikraman died at his residence on December 14th at 63. The story of Vikraman is as amazing as it is inspiring. No wonder K.S.Vikraman is considered as ‘Stephen Hawking of Kerala’.

FESTIVAL
Heralding the arrival of
Christmas
S
preading the warmth of the nearing festive season of Christmas, the Annual Cake Mixing ceremony was held at the Leela Raviz Hotel, Kovalam. The Terrace restaurant of The Leela Raviz was filled with the rich aroma of the ceremony which brought alive the rich tradition and unveiled the spirit of the festive season. Part of an age-old Christmas tradition, the mixing ceremony hails from the Anglo Saxon culture. The ceremony has gained an increased reception in India only recently. It has begun to become a celebratory event. Cake-mixing is not just about making cakes. It’s more about bringing people together, bringing cultures together and cherishing moments of harmony and love and preparing one of our favourite delicacies, the Christmas cake. Christmas is no Christmas without the inevitable Christmas cake and

the preparations begin months in advance for that. In recent years many hotels have begun to organize cake-mixing ceremonies to spread the happiness of the festive season. It has evolved to be a more secular celebratory event for all to take part and enjoy. v is a forerunner of good news and happiness. Cake mixing, however, is different from the cake baking which happens much after cake mixing is done. While mixing, the mixed ingredients are allowed to marinate in the juices and beverages for 40 days before baking begins. The mixing is auspiciously done with cinnamon, clove, mace, rum, brandy, whisky, wine, honey, golden syrup, raisin, black raisin, cashew, walnut, almond, candied fruit, cherries, black currant, dates figs and prunes. The Annual Cake Mixing ceremony at The Leela Raviz Kovalam had created moments of joy among the participants for them to cherish

Make kids aware of the ill-effects of plastic : Kanayi Kunhiraman
Multi-Event Campaign for a Plastic-Free India Attracts People in Large Numbers at Manaveeyam Veedhi
E
ducating children on the ill-effects of plastics has become ultimately important, and the awareness on plastic menace should start from their homes, opined renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Multi-Event Campaign for a Plastic-Free India’ at the Manaveeyam Veedhi on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of the Mahatma Gandhi. Kanayi Kunhiraman inaugurated the campaign by drawing a picture at the venue. Implementing the ban on single-use plastics and creating a model village on the lines of what Mahatma Gandhi had envisioned has become the need of the hour, he said, adding that he would extend all support towards such an initiative. The campaign organised by the city-based Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA),

witnessed an array of renowned personalities assemble at the inauguration of the multi-event campaign. The call for making plastic producers take back their products after a certain period was heard aloud, as eminent personalities, school and college students, and the general public assembled in support of the ban on single-use plastics. L Radhakrishnan IAS, who presided over the inaugural function, pointed out that it is a shame that Kerala has not been able to scrap the use of plastic even after so many years of realising the bane. He reminded the audience that the state of Sikkim had rejected plastic way back in 2002. Calling upon the government to strictly implement laws along with creating awareness against the use of plastics, he said the laws should ensure that there is a complete ban on the use of single-use plastics
(SUPs). Dr Biju Kumar, Department of Aquatic Biology, University of Kerala, in his speech assured that CISSA would rope in youngsters to be part of the mega awareness campaign against single-use plastics and also towards bringing in alternatives to plastic. Along with this, CISSA would play an important role in putting pressure on plastic producers to be more responsible in a world that sees the plastic as a menace. Arjuna Awardee Padmini Thomas read out the pledge against single-use plastics at the function. The prominent guests at the event signed on a signature wall erected at the venue in support of the ban on single-use plastics. A message from prominent poet and environment
activist Sugathakumari against the use of plastics was also read out at the event. Various programmes which had huge participation were also conducted. hile most restaurateurs are losing their touch with traditions and traditional recipes, it is quite remarkable that one restaurant has taken efforts to provide traditional Kerala meals throughout the year. It was the vision of Sanal K.S – the proprietor of Mothers Veg Plaza at Bakery Junction, Thiruvananthapuram that traditional recipes and forms of cooking needs to be reintroduced in the restaurant industry. The high patronage at Mothers Veg Plaza shows that the customers quite agree with that view. Sadhya holds the prime spot in the menu of this restaurant. Foodies can choose from the different Sadhyas available at the vast dining area. Plain boiled rice along with an assortment of other dishes is the standard Meals. HUMANENESS
Compassion Knows No Bounds‘No Food Waste’ Organisation
C
ompassion knows no bounds. It does not have any dimensions, colour, politics. An understanding of the sufferings of fellowmen prompts genuinely humane people to come forward and wipe off their tears, mitigate their woes and pains. Such acts are the only rays of hope in a world where barbaric atrocities committed by man on man are on the increase and selfishness is becoming the mantle of mankind. India is the second largest food producer globally, covering 10.04% of the total world’s food production. But, at the same time India ranked 97 among 118 developing countries for which the Global Hunger Index (GHI) was calculated in 2016. There are lakhs of people who don’t have a square meal a day. There are

lakhs who do not know how to find something to eat to keep themselves alive. And those who understand their sufferings and come forward to give some relief to them are really Godly people. This is what ‘No Food Waste’ initiative does. It does much more than that. Born and headquartered at Coimbatore, ‘No Food Waste’ founded by Sri.A.G.Padmanabhan is a food recovery and food waste management network that helps connect the individuals and businesses with excess food from weddings, parties and other events to the hungry and the deprived. They approach the issue of hunger with a sharing-economy model: the donation of excess food enables a vital, yet often wasted, resource to be used to its full capacity. This is achieved through
a Hot- line number and dedicated collection Mini Vans. Throwing away food benefits no one. Not only could the food have gone to someone in need, but the resource cost is tremendous. Onefifth of greenhouse gases come from meat production, and it takes over ten gallons of water to produce a single slice of bread. No Food Waste platform simplifies the process of food recovery, so donors can make social, environmental and financial change in their choice to Feed the Needy. No Food Waste organisation started at Coimbatore with just 2 Shopper Bags and a volunteer to collect the surplus food and deliver it to the homeless through Public Transportation System from October 16th , 2014. Today, No Food Waste matches the individuals and users who have surplus food with nearby shelters, organizations, and low income communities in real time. They have a dedicated Call Center, Collection Vehicle , Feeding Points and a sustainable process in Place. Today No Food Waste Project Feeds an average of 900 people per day. The number of people fed has crossed 9,75,000. Revenue saved by them is around Rs.5 crores. The quantity of food saved through the mission is over 320 tonnes. They serve in centres in the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, Telengana and in north indian centres Delhi, Noida. No Food Waste organisation distributes only good quality untouched excess foods recovered from different functions.
Throwing away food benefits no one. Not only could the food have gone to someone in need, but the resource cost is tremendous. Their use of technology makes No Food Waste unique in three ways - they are able to provide their services on-demand, deliver data analytics, and they are scalable. The mission has also reached out to more than 50,000 students teaching them auditing food waste and managing food waste in their campuses. Awareness sessions on the impact of food waste is conducted in corporates , organisations , institutions and public places. The organisation does not charge the users of the system as their motto is to reach the excess surplus foods to the needy , however users can support for the Food Recovery Kilometers ( KMS) which is around Rs 10/KM. Theyalso raise donations from philanthropists and like minded individuals to run the system day to day. The major expenses involved in are for transportation and communication. The noble mission serves the needy people in Government hospitals, economically backward slums, needy orphanages and old age homes, homeless people, shelter Homes, ruDecember 2019

ral communities etc. Call centre team receives the food calls at the helpline number collecting the details of donors, food menu, food quantity and time the food was cooked. Field Team in the Office & Storage Unit receives details from the Call Centre team and follows the donor mentioning the pick-up time and also marks near hunger spot. The field team collects excess food from the Supply Spot in our dedicated vehicle and vessels. The collected food is then distributed in the nearby Hunger Spot to ensure immediate transfer of foods to needy to avoid it getting spoiled with the help of hunger spot volunteers. As a part of their food recovery process, they collect samples of each food to check its freshness with odour, texture and taste. They ensure the quality of the food during collection and distribution to the needy and avoid collecting certain menus such as coconut added items, curd/butter items since they spoil at a faster rate. Also, they use an optimum cost effective technology solution for testing the food quickly to start immediate distribution as the existing techniques are taking more time.
