KIMS TRIVANDRUM
Dear Readers,
I take the pleasure of wishing you and your family members a Happy Onam
Foreword
O
nam – the festival of food, fun and flowering prosperity is at our doorsteps. The heavy monsoon doesn’t seem to affect the enthusiasm of Malayalees all over the world. All romantic films deal with a recurring theme – love. After a break of long 4 years, Anoop Menon is back with a romantic flick penned by him. What makes Anoop Menon’s Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal stand apart is the fresh approach it has adopted to narrate a love story. In an exclusive interview with Metro Mart, Anoop Menon opens up about his new movie, his career and recollects moments from his eventful life. The movie explores the friendship beyond a typical romantic relationship, says Anoop. Dedicated to youth and addressing concerns such as youth entrepreneurship and youth employment, International MSME Day celebrations and Metro MSME Award distribution was held in Thiruvananthapuram. The seminar covered guidelines for MSME growth and the impact of technological advancement in the MSME sector as well. Recognizing their contributions Metro Mart honoured the prominent leaders in the MSME sector. We believe acknowledging these players would set an example and prove inspirational for the budding entrepreneurs of our nation. May this Onam gives you a lot of happiness in your life. Happy reading!

noop Menon who has brought us strikingly memorable and often thought provoking movies is back with his latest scriptwriting cum acting venture ‘Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal. In a candid interview with Metromart, he talks about his latest movie, his unexpected career path and a few nostalgic moments. Read on for excerpts from the interview.

‘Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal’ is an intriguing name. Could you talk a bit about your latest movie? I believe Ente Mezhuthiri Athazhangal is my best attempt at portraying the whole concept of love, the chemistry and the ingredients of it. I have tried to match two great loves—the love for food and the love for love. He is a chef and she is a candle maker. His love for food and his appetite for love—that is the heart of the movie. We have seen friendship blossoming into love. In Ente Mezhuthitri Athazhangal, I have tried to explore what happens when love blossoms into a beautiful friendship. Designer candles and candlelight dinners are not a part of the everyday life for the regular Malayali audience. Wouldn’t this movie be unrelatable? This movie is centered on a universally relatable emotion—love. It is not about designer candles. It is not about cuisines or a master chef. This movie is all about love. One of the characters in the movie makes designer candles. That’s all. And for the regular Malayali, designer candle is not an unknown or a foreign concept. We used to have white candles in churches before and now we have designer candles instead. So for the Malayali audience both designer and candles are a real part of life. 16

Even though you are an LL.B rank holder you have never done a script in that area. Is there a reason for that? I haven’t written a script in that area yet but the next script I am planning to do is about an advocate. Mahadevan Thampi would be doing that movie. Moreover, in the movie B.Tech I played an advocate. Is there a difference when you act in your own script as opposed to someone else’s? I tend to act better or I tend to conceive the character better when I act in good screenplays. I can be a very terrible actor when it comes to bad screenplays and a bad director. So more than me writing a script the actor in me depends upon whether a script is good or bad. Is there a movie which made you feel that ‘Anoop Menon—the actor’ is quite flexible? I don’t give a serious thought about that because there have been much greater actors before me, with me, and will be there in the future after me. Acting for me is about honing a craft with every movie. I find myself detestable in all my movies. I don’t like myself in any of my movies but people have complemented me on movies like Thirakkatha, Beautiful, Traffic, Vikramaadithyan, Paavada, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol,

or Aami where I play a character quite different from my usual roles. Maybe the State Awards give me a further boost of confidence when it comes to treating myself as a good or above average actor. But at the end of the day, when I see a film my inner critic comes out, pointing out all the mistakes and how bad I am. Your movie Pakalnakshatrangal did not garner the success it deserved and your next script was Cocktail, which was a credited remake of the Canadian movie Butterfly on a Wheel. Why go for a remake film? I wasn’t an established actor or writer at that point of time and I also felt that it was a film that I had to do. The movie was a flop in Canada. The original did not even get a proper theatrical release because they thought it was that bad. But I felt the concept would resonate with the Malayali of today especially the urban audience. And to set the record straight it is not exactly my film. If you check film credits you will find that I haven’t taken credit for that script. 18

I have heard that you were a shy person growing up and that you were rather camera-shy. How does such a person become an actor? Well, not exactly camera-shy because there weren’t many cameras around during my childhood. But I was an ugly duckling kind of guy. People used to ask my sister ‘how did you get this brother?’ I was a very puny, lean kid and my sister was a very beautiful child. During my Pre-degree years I had dreams about movies like everyone else of my age. But it took a serious turn when I entered Law College. That was when people started noticing me for some unforeseen reason. I became the center of attention in my group. It wasn’t what I had anticipated or predicted. Something happened during that time which might have been a stroke of destiny. Then it dawned on me that I could give acting a try. That’s when I started thinking about acting seriously. Before that I always wanted to be a writer and a director. But it was Law College that turned it completely around. The attention that I got from my peers
when I stood up to say something, the regard that these people gave to what I had to say or to what I had to enact, that was what caused that revolutionary change. Between acting and writing, which one are you more passionate about? I am very passionate about writing but I am very comfortable in acting. Acting is very easy. Once you have honed the craft, you can manage. But I find writing much more difficult. I am not talking about great acting like that of Tom Hardy or what Ranbir Kapoor did for the movie Sanju. It is easy to get away with your acting if you are basically intelligent in the way you confront a scene. Once you know the craft and what you have to do there, you can manage to scrape through.
20

But that doesn’t happen with scriptwriting. You have to reinvent yourself. And it is a very rewarding an experience when you write a really good scene, when you see an actor performing your scene and getting the result of it. Nothing can supplant it. You mentioned that your character in Aami, Akbar Ali, was different from your usual roles. Did you have any concerns while doing such a controversial character? Absolutely not. I was only concerned about whether I could convincingly portray the character. I have never spoken Urdu in my life. I had not even read an Urdu couplet till then. I had read maybe a couple of Hindi poems by Gulzar but I was absolutely at sea about the whole thing. I was thinking about
the accent, the behavior of an Urdu poet while singing his song, the way his lips would move, the feeling conveyed through the eyes and other mannerisms. The controversies are for the director to be concerned about. I am just a tool for him. An actor is a helpless thing. He is just as good as his director. He is the least important part of a film. Did you do any particular training for the role? Nothing. I was just sitting in my caravan memorizing lines before the scene. Kamal Sir was very supportive. There was no formal training as such involved. We Malayali actors can’t afford such luxury. Maybe Bollywood can. Someone like Ranbir Kapoor can get 3 years of training for his movies. We would get 3 hours or maybe even 30 minutes. We can’t train like that unless we plan to do a single film once every 2 years. You said controversies are not the actor’s concern. What about when you are the scriptwriter? Did you have any worries when penning a script such as Trivandrum Lodge? What Trivandrum lodge touted five years ago is just kids play today. Everybody talks about it. Yeah. But back then it wasn’t so. Back then there was a huge outcry. Whenever we have tried to break a mould there will be such a reaction. That’s a given and I am OK with July 2018

it. There was criticism then for portraying women in a very liberal way. Two women talking about sex with each other was a complete nono at that point of time but now it is ok. Even then it was ok but some couldn’t stand it in a theatre. And the women did not have a problem with it. It was more of a man’s problem than a woman’s. It was the men who found themselves naked when two women talked about sex and how sexually powerless a man can be in front of a woman. It is only after the film came out as video that men started liking it. And I should say here that it was only a section of men that had problem with it. The movie was a huge hit and it became a success because men flocked to the theatres. So only a section of the society had problem with it and even they are awakening to the possibility that women are strong and they can. Are you a foodie? Are there special places in Trivandrum that you visit just for food? I was a foodie and will always be a foodie if my health allows 22

it. Yeah there are lots of places in Trivandrum. I don’t know if you have heard of Kattachalkuzhi chicken. I have travelled so many miles just to get this chicken. You get it somewhere in the villages of Vizhinjam. Then there are the bolis and payasam. You have to go to Valiyasala to get the best bolis. The homemade cakes from Vellayambalam are amazing. Even the simple parippu curry that you get with Sadya in Trivandrum can’t be replaced with anything else. I love the unniyappam from Kottarakkara Ganapathy Kshetram. Then there are these small bakeries with funny names such as Mobi bakery which have butter buns. I haven’t tasted a better butter bun than I have tasted in Trivandrum during my college days. Now those butter buns are almost gone. Shankar Ramakrishnan and me, used to walk the streets of Trivandrum talking about scripts and for lunch we wouldn’t have money for a full fledged meal so we would buy dilkush instead. Then we would go to Central Stadium, have Dilkush and talk about Tarkovysky and Dostoevysky and all those vyskies.

METRO TALK
Get to Know Schemes for MSME sector At Metro MSME Day Seminar and Celebrations, Assistant Director of MSME-DI, Kathreenamma Sebastian, gave an informative speech on MSME sector and the various schemes from the government. 40
July 2018
W
e are celebrating June 27th, as International MSME Day. In Delhi too the central government is celebrating the day in a grand scale, under the aegis of Ministry of MSME. Metro Mart and its team should be commended for conducting a seminar and associated activities celebrating the day. We know that MSME sector is the backbone for every country’s economic development, whether it is India or any other country. The MSME sector plays a significant part in not only the economic level, but also the social, political and economic levels of each country. Even though it is said that India is predominantly in to agriculture, industries holds a significant role as the secondary sector after agriculture. We know that industries is growing at a fast pace than the agriculture sector. Officials have been studying the development model of industry sectors in other countries with analytical surveys and implementing the best policies in India. Make in India campaign by the central government could be termed as an invitation to global players to establish businesses
across sectors in India, which would create employment opportunities in the country. This campaign would bring in a remarkable change in the economy of India, especially for States like Kerala. MSME sector holds a significant role in this. Indian products have created a niche for itself in the international markets. That is the main reason why State and Central governments are taking steps to support these industries. It was a difficult task to start an MSME unit earlier. However, in the present globalization and liberalization age, the complications are removed and the process is made easy. Before the MSMED Act was implemented in 2006, the central government has a combined Ministry for SSI, Agro and Rural Industries. With this Act, a separate Ministry of MSME was formed. This Ministry’s focus is on formulating policies for these MSME industries across the country, get sufficient funds in budget, and provide efficient support in development of the sector. Several schemes have been set up for the MSME sector under this Ministry and the office of the July 2018
41
Development Commission. It is the MSMED Act which has brought in a specific clause for Medium enterprises. The classification of Micro, Small Scale and Medium is based on the financial investment in plant and machinery. The MSME sector is further divided in to two – Manufacturing sector and Service sector. Under the Manufacturing category, an investment up to 25 lakhs in plant and machinery would be Micro enterprises. Above 25 lakhs and up to 5 crores would come under Small scale enterprises. Above 5 crores and up to 10 crores would be Medium scale enterprises. For the service sector, the classification is based on investment is in equipment. Under the Service category investment up to 10 lakhs would come under Micro service enterprises. Small scale enterprises are those with investment above 10 lakhs and up to 2 crores. Those enterprises investing in equipments above 2 crores and up to 5 crores would be Medium scale service enterprises. The major benefit of the MSMED Act is making provisions for certain norms which were not there before. As per the census of MSME sector, we know that there are many defunct MSME enterprises or which have not developed much. While studying reasons for sick units or stressed situation, the reason was noted to be due to nonpayment for 42
July 2018
goods sold on credit. Even though such is the payment situation, since their companies are running they need to factor in the cost of operation as well as the tax to government. This leads to a stressed phase and later on closure of these companies. Legal framework for delayed payments was formed in the MSMED Act of 2006. If payment is not received within 45 days for goods sold on credit, a case can be filed with Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council (MSEFC) under the Directorate of Industries and Commerce. In this council with judiciary power, cases can be settled at sittings conducted each month. Government has specified that agreements mentioning the specific number of days should be kept. I have noticed during several seminars and meetings that many people – some even running MSME businesses for many years – do not know about this delayed payments clause in MSMED Act. To further ease the process, MSME Samadhan portal was started by Development Commissioner under MSME. It can be accessed in the front page of DCMSME site. Cases can be filed through this site. If this is not settled within specified days, automatically a case is registered at MSEFC. Ministry of MSME and Development Commission MSME has implemented several schemes for the development of MSME
sector. However, again, many of these schemes are not utilized by the concerned. When government finds that the schemes are not much sought after, these schemes might be withdrawn. ZED (Zero Defect and Zero Effect) scheme was recently implemented by the government. MSMEs will be rated & certified. Manufacturing export quality goods which will not be rejected due to any defect is the criteria under this scheme. Zero Effect denotes producing goods without any environmental pollution. It is seen that ISO certified and bar-coded products are preferred by procurers. However, in future products from ZED certified units would be given preference. The ZED certification is likely to be recognized globally. Registration for ZED is in 5 levels – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Platinum. Quality Council of India based out of Delhi is the nodal agency for giving this certification. Many states have implemented this ZED certification and several units have got certified. About 80% of the expense for the certification process will be reimbursed for the Micro enterprises. The link for ZED scheme is in DCMSME site and through that site a self assessment can be done and on satisfying the conditions mentioned, a unit can advance up to the Platinum level. Quality Council of India has trained resource personnel across States who have the power 44
July 2018
to provide handholding support to MSME units. In our office, Mr. G.S. Prakash looks after ZED certification procedures. MSME sector is providing employment for 44.64 lakh people. MSME-Development Institute was established in Kerala in 1956. It is the field outfit of Development Commissioner (MSME) under the Ministry of MSME, Government of India to take care of the needs of MSME sector in the State of Kerala and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. We provide technical assistance, managerial support, training, etc. to MSME entrepreneurs. MSME-DI has technical officers who provide assistance to MSME units. Trades supported include electrical, electronics, metallurgy, mechanical, glass and ceramics, chemical, rubber, plastic, leather, etc. Around 4500 people approach our office in a year for guidance and support of which around 75% are prospective entrepreneurs. Our guidance includes in identifying a prospective business, preparing project report, financial guidance, enlightening them on governmental schemes, technical details, etc. For existing entrepreneurs, we provide managerial support and technical assistance. In the case of sick units, we suggest measures to be taken to revive their performance. We conduct management development programmes. Several training
sessions such as motivational industrial seminar (1 day) and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (10 days) are carried out by MSME-DI. The certification of EDP is a criterion for availing loan for setting up an MSME unit. Training programmes for management development (5 days) and skill development are also given by MSME-DI. Skill development programme (6 weeks) is conducted for several topics such as electrical welding, computer programming, gas welding, aluminium fabrication, garment manufacturing, etc. In addition to these, MSME-DI is conducting several workshops for the benefit of entrepreneurs. In 2012, the government formed a public procurement policy, which was made mandatory in 2015. This policy was declared by the government for establishing a market link between small scale enterprises, government department, etc. As per this policy, 20% of goods and services purchased by government departments, public sector organizations, ministries, etc. in a year should be from Micro and Small scale sector. It also stipulates purchasing 4% from SC/ST category. To facilitate this, government formed a SC/ST hub. The government has also formed a Stressed MSME Committee to support sick units or enterprises operating with difficulty. With this initiative, the government 46
July 2018
focuses on reviving sick and stressed units. Most of the schemes from government departments can be found in their respective websites. Schemes of Development Commission MSME can be seen in DCMSME website. Mobile friendly app MyMSME is also available. We know that imported products of good quality are available at low cost. Advanced technology in those countries enable them to manufacture these products in low budget. We have to compete with those global brands and products and for this we need updated technology. Government is setting up TCSP (Technology Center Systems Program) in Angamaly, Kerala. TCSP is being set up to enhance technological efficiency and skill sets of MSMEs. The central government has identified around 51 sectors under the Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme for projects up to 1 crore. About 48618 units has benefited so far by this scheme with the government spending Rs. 290768 crores until December 31st. Ministry of MSME and SIDBI together has formed the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE), wherein the trust acts as a guarantee for entrepreneurs for up to Rs. 2 crores of projects. Technology Business Incubators has also been set up in many institutions.

Develop New Concepts and Create Cross-Sector Ideas – Gautham Yogeshwar
Speaking at Metro MSME Day Seminar and Celebrations, Assistant district industries officer Gautham Yogeshwar touched upon the immense possibilities for entrepreneurs in Kerala. Excerpts from the Speech:
A
ll districts of Kerala has District Industries Centres. Industries development officers are available in all block panchayats and municipalities in Kerala. Enterprising is going through a significant phase currently. This is the most employment creating sector after agriculture. Earlier, a major portion of our income was from foreign countries. Last year the foreign remittance we received was about 1,52,000 crores. However that remittance is reducing. People are losing jobs in foreign countries and returning back to Kerala. Many of them panic on what to do next. Even though agriculture is not the foremost preference, many are getting in to agriculture, hightech farming. Everyone cannot get in to agriculture. Availability of other jobs is also very less. Hence, the only option is Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises sector. There are more than 6,000 enterprises and products in this sector. This sector contributes 45% of our exports. On

my experience, it is my view that not even 5% of the potential of MSME sector is exploited until now. That is because our self-restricted vision on available fields. There are several other business areas where an enterprising person can get in to. It is high time cross-sector entrepreneurial thoughts develop. We are still stuck in traditional forms of entrepreneurship ideas. A CISRNIIST workshop recently showcased new ideas and technologies for enterprisers. Central Tuber Crops Research Institute at Sreekaryam has several technologies. They have technologies which could make value additions with locally available resources and make it tasty and nutritious. This would give a stiff
competition to the junk foods that are available in the market. We can buy these technologies from them and manufacture products which could also be exported. Germany, Japan, and China are the main developers of solar cells (silicon cells). Technologists in India produced electricity by using organic dyes to trap light. The cost is reduced by 50% in this technology. Another technology developed in India is corrosion resistant compounds. Hot airflow dryer used to dry thing using low temperature air is also a technology developed by CSIR. This is done without losing any basic quality of the products. Like this, there are many more technologies developed by Indian research institutes for entrepreneurs. New entrepreneurs should try to develop nano or micro level technologies and machineries. Mostly large machineries and techniques are available, which are not ideal for the lower levels. For example, manufacturing a plant for activated charcoal could cost around Rupees one crore. A home would get around 3-4 coconut shells every week. If a miniature unit that can process 5-kg of activated charcoal is developed, it could be used by a resident’s association or a group of homes. To support household enterprises, the industries department has formed a Nano Household Enterprises Scheme. Household units of Rs. 5,00,000 and up to 5HP power would get an interest subvention of 6% to 8%. To start an enterprise, you need 50

to have a good entrepreneurial concept. Kerala is a blessed State. The potentials for entrepreneurs is huge. But, new ideas and concepts should be realized by enterprises. For example, there are many products which can be made out of Papaya such as Papain and fruit juices. More than 350 products can be made out of jackfruit. The roasted seeds of Anjili fruit can compete with pista. We need to effectively utilize resources. Rain water harvest can be taken up at household levels and processed to drinking water and in turn marketed to water deficient states. State and central government sponsored schemes are available for MSMEs. ESS scheme of state government for manufacturing units enables getting subsidy up to Rs. 30 lakhs for investment on land, land development, building, machinery, electrification, etc. The subsidy is based on different scales from 15% to 50%. In Stressed Unit Rehabilitation Scheme, up to Rs. 5 lakhs assistance would be provided. In addition to schemes from industries department, other departments and boards too offer schemes for the benefit of MSM entrepreneurs. We need to identify available resources in Kerala, use the technologies developed and build up businesses. Officers from the industries department are available to assist entrepreneurs in identifying opportunities, opting for apt technologies and setting up enterprises.
