A DIVISION OF HAPPY & RUBY GROUP
Foreword
Dear Readers Onam is fast approaching and the city is gearing up to welcome the New Year (Kollavarsham). Being in the month of ‘Karkidakom’ or ‘Aadi’ as some say, Shops and other establishments are clearing their stocks and offering huge discounts and reductions. Many have taken up Ayurvedic treatments during the month of Karkidakom in Kerala. The monsoon is playing hide and seek, giving pangs to farmers and consumers alike. Several residential and commercial properties alike have undertaken annual clean-up and renovation. The city is bustling with various activities to go in to the new month of Chingam with a fresh beginning. In this month’s edition of Metro Mart we have continued our glance in to the various ministries of the government and highlighted some of the achievements of the government during the last year. Looking back, as another Kollavarsham passes by, the city has definitely grown in leaps and bounds. It would be hugely beneficial for us in the long run, if we – the citizens of the city – put on our thinking caps and be sensitive to our surroundings in terms of new ideas as well as taking forward existing positive development processes. Celebrate this Onam and share your celebration with your friends, relatives and loved ones. Wishing You a Very Happy Onam 2017! Looking forward to hear from you

yurveda - the wisdom of the sages always had a holistic approach to life and lifestyle. In the great books of Ayurveda there are chapters dedicated to how one should eat, drink, sleep, exercise and even cook one’s food not because they thought we didn’t know how to do it, but to do them the right way to avoid illness and to promote health. This holistic approach of Ayurveda is very relevant in today’s society, because we have a lot of lifestyle disorders, which are becoming common from a very young age. Obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, immune disorders are few of the most commonly seen health problems these days. Let’s discuss obesity, which is a rampant problem among young and old. According to WHO:“ Obesity/ overweight is defined as abnormal/excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health.”
ARE YOU OBESE? In a crude population, the measure of obesity is the body mass index/BMI. Body mass index (BMI)= Weight in kilograms = kg/m2 (Height in meters)2 A person with a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. A person with BMI equal to ormore than 25 is considered overweight.
According to Ayurveda, one should never eat a full stomach. Ideally, half of the stomach capacity should be filled with solid foods; quarter by liquids and the remaining part should be left empty for accommodating air. www.metromartdaily.com
Dr.Sanjaiyan R, MD (Ay)
RISKS OF OBESITY: Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for most of the chronic diseases, which are now called lifestyle diseases. Obesity is also an important cause of osteoarthritis, which is an inflammatory disease of joints.
WHY IS THE PREVALENCE OF OBESITY ON THE RISE? Today’s trend in eating is like today’s lifestyle! -‘FAST’. ‘Fast-food’ is the ‘in-thing’ these days, and that is the main culprit for all our health problems. Another reason for overweight is the way we eat, either we are in a hurry so we don’t chew our food well or we eat standing up or in front of computer or TV. Overeating, lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle are also reasons for the rise in number of people with obesity.
STRATEGIES TO PREVENT OBESITY: According to Ayurveda, one should never eat a full stomach.Ideally, half of the stomach capacity should be filled with solid foods; quarter by liquids and the

remaining part should be left empty for accommodating air. Heavy foods that take long time to digest should be consumed till half of the satiation level. Foods that are light to digest should be consumed just before the stage of satiation. The right amount of food is that which undergoes digestion before the next mealtime. To lose weight, it is recommended to have water before a meal. There is evidence to the fact that people, who eat fast, gain weight. So chew your food thoroughly, relish and savor it and practice ‘mindful eating’. Always remember that your stomach is an “expandable” organ, the more you eat, the more it will accommodate,
soreduce the quantity of the food you eat gradually. One technique is to select a smaller plate to eat your food and smaller spoon to serve. Another fact you need to keep in mind is that, even food that is healthy should be consumed in moderation.
Ayurvedic Therapies to lose weight: 1. Udwarthana: A herbal powder massage, which helps to “burn” subcutaneous fat/ cellulite, that reduce weight and increase firmness of the underlying muscles. 2. A bhyanga: An oil massage, which helps to improve blood circulation and thereby improve metabolism. 3. P anchakarma: This five-fold therapy helps in flushing out metabolic wastes and toxins from the body whereby cleansing the system and correcting your metabolism. The key to losing weight is having a balanced lifestyle- one that includes good eating habits, exercise and rest. Make a decision to work towards a healthy lifestyle, even if change is not always easy. Remember, “ To change your body you must first change your mind”. h! What a way to start a journey! The inaugural session of Kochi Metro rail service at Kaloor stadium reverberated with this noble Upanishad verse rendered by Manju Thomas. Just as this verse exhorts all to be happy as the locomotive gets on track with the most honorable passenger, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India on board. On the historic ride he travelled four kilometer from Palarivattam to Pathadipalam along with the Governor P. 20 August 2017
Sathasivam, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Principal Adviser E. Sreedharan, and Kochi Metro Rail Limited Managing Director Elias George. The prestigious Kochi Metro Rail is nation’s eighth inter rail services stretching 13 km from Aluva to Palarivattom with three coaches which can seat 136 passengers.

The official inaugural function held at Kaloor stadium witnessed an unusual display of gratitude by the audience for the Metro Man who finished the task in the stipulated time and budget, braving all the storm that erupted to thwart the project. They went on a rapturous applause when the Metro Man E. Sreedharan - the backbone of the project - was welcomed. Amidst the loud cheers he stood as a sthitha pragna who received the accolades and brickbats with the same detachment– which he acquired by the methodical reading of Bhagavath Gita. Even as the PM looked amused, the speech of Elias George was interrupted by the cheers of the crowd and he had to wait patiently for the ovation to subside to proceed with his allotted task of welcoming the guests. At the end of the historic ride, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi patted this unassuming man for the arduous task he accomplished. Of the envisioned 25 kilometers of the Kochi Metro, only 13 kms - from Aluva to Palarivattom - was thrown open for commuters. Another 5 kms will be opened by September. Yes, Kochi is on a smart pace. No more traffic snarls and parking woes. Kochi

Pregnant women and children too are given priority. A multiutility card provided by Axis bank can be procured by a simple documentation of name and phone number and it can be used as debit-cum-ticket card or as E-wallet if charged with enough money. Net users will have a gala time as the coaches and stations are provided with free WiFi. Lastly for the sweetest part the metro, doors of the coaches will open and close to the accompaniment of Chenda, the percussion instrument of Kerala. KSRTC has agreed to work in unison with the Kochi Metro and has arranged special feeder services to enable smooth functioning of the rail. According to M.G. Rajamanickam, KSRTC Chairman and Managing Director, almost 40 low-floor air-conditioned and non air-conditioned JNNURM buses of the KURTC will ply from the two stations from 5 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. Another important information you have to bear in mind is that no foul play is allowed as it’s all designed in a foolproof manner. He says India needs more speed. Reiterating the importance of people resorting to public transport system, metro rail is the need of the hour for Indian cities and has to catch up with the pace of China which covers 200km long metros every year as to our meager below 20 km every year. Inaugurating the esteemed project the Prime Minister Modi said the city, known for its historical spice trade and as a hub of tourism, was ideal for the establishment of the Metro, as its population was expected to touch 23 lakh by 2021. The Kochi Metro Rail will be the first in the country to use CommunicationBased Train Control system (CBTC). The state-of-the-art technology paves way for driverless trains in the future. Kochi Metro is the first metro in India to provide employment for transgender community. The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd is placing solar panels on the rooftop of 22 stations, buildings and vacant plots in the metro yard which helps in producing almost 6.5 megawatt power together. Kochi Metro is the fastest to complete its first phase in 4 years. Kochi Metro will have the largest women crew in any metro once it deploys members of Kudumbasree women self-help group for managing station operations. The
number of vehicles in Kerala has risen to more than a crore. Hence, it has become a greater necessity that environment-friendly modes of transport are introduced and at the same time strengthen the public transport facilities. And this precisely seems to be at the core of several steps taken by the Ministry of Transport over the last one year. Taking into consideration the Green Tribunal judgment, the government has initiated support for environmentfriendly fuels such as solar energy, electric, CNG, and LNG. LNG bus trials has been undertaken by KSRTC and the process is on to buy CNG buses. Filling stations for these are being constructed. Solar auto rickshaw was run during the GoM meet in Kerala. Another measure taken against

environment pollution is the Green Tax. India’s first solar ferry – Aditya – operated on solar power has started functioning between Vaikom and Thavanakadavu. A project to run buses on bio-diesel was held at Thottilpalam and Thalassery. The increased fines for traffic violation could lead to reduced violations. Strict motor vehicle enforcement measures taken by the government would see increased income for the government as well as reduce rash driving and accidents. Several locations in the National Highway between Cherthala and Manjeswaram and in selected spots in the districts of Kannur, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Kollam are to get Closed Circuit Camera to identify speeding vehicles. More than 14 crores have been collected in fines with this measure.

Heavy vehicles, school vehicles, tippers, and stage carriages are stipulated to use Speed governors. Fitness of education institution buses is being tested and due measures taken. Drivers are given training in good road practices and safe driving by the motor vehicle department. Six new Joint RT offices would be established. The government is fixing time limit for services rendered by the motor vehicle department and also introducing automated driving test centres, which would be of immense benefit to the public. Around 400 buses of KSRTC and 64 of KURTC were put into operation during the last one year. More than a thousand employments were done in the first year of this government. The Transport Ministry is all set to make a positive impact for the public. elephant herd There is no greater love in the elephant realm than the maternal bond between mother and calf . Elephants are known for their complex social and emotional behaviour and are said to value their families more than most animals. They are incredibly protective of their young ones and the baby ends up with an entire herd of mothers , all of whom take turns in watching over each other’s children , which of course provides great relief to the mother. She certainly needs all the rest in the world after the nearly 2 year long pregnancy! The longest gestation period of all mammals. The newborn calf here is well guarded by the protective wall formed by the herd, the thick undergrowth giving it added cover .
