KERALA: SKIMMING FORWARD! Kerala gained its political status as a result of State Reorganisation Act passed by the Government of India in 1956 which was a major reform to redraw the boundaries of the pre-established states on the basis of linguistic similarities. Kerala completed 60 years on 1st of November 2016. The day is also known as Kerala Piravi Dinam or ‘Birthday of Kerala’. The rich history, culture and prosperity are cherished by the Malayalees across the globe as one family.

The land is blessed with high-risen mountains that reach for the majestic sky and the deep sea that delights the shores with her playful tricks. Kerala has always captivated the writers of ancient era who have captured the beauty of the

state in the Mythology of our country. The beauty of the story has been woven in a way that fuels the imagination of its readers who are mesmerized by the scenic and historic elegance of the state. Ancient mythology mentions that Parasurama (Reincarnation of Lord Vishnu) flung

his ‘Mazhu’ (axe) from Gokarnam (Gokarna) to the sea and the sea receded to form the land of Kerala. Skimming forward to the Modern Era, the demand for a separate state that was formed on the basis of linguistic unity among the masses began bestowing political rights in the early 20th Century in Travancore and Kochi. After India attained her Independence in 1947, Travancore and Kochi was merged to form Travancore-Cochin State. Kerala gained its political status as a result of State Reorganisation Act passed by the Government of India in 1956 which was a major reform to redraw the boundaries of the pre-established states on the basis of linguistic similarities. The merger of Travancore-Cochin state with Malabar District and Kasaragod of South Canara gave birth to the new face of Kerala. The state was divided in 14 districts with Thiruvananthapuram as the state capital. Tourism today is an instrumental way of generating revenue for Kerala. The geographical

10

February 2017

variations has helped in attracting tourists both national as well as global citizens. The most striking instance of Kerala is the monsoon season that fills the 44 rain fed rivers, in summers these convert into rivulets and back waters that are known as the charm of Kerala. The colorful culture glistens through performing arts like Kathakali, Oppana, Mohiniattam, Margamkali, Ottamthullal, Yakshaganam, Chakyarkooth, and other religious festivals and rituals. Kerala is also known for its precious handicraft carefully carved out of coconut shells, sandalwood, shells and ivory. The State’s cuisine has brought many foodies from all over the world together who have relished the variety of sea food coupled with lipsmacking local dishes. As coined rightly, God’s Own country, that describe the elegance of the land, Kerala has more to offer than its spices and nature. Kerala elected the first communist government after its inception in 1957, this has added to the uniqueness of the state in a global edge to the state.

Kerala has evolved into an ideal state that has led to setting up of Kerala Model Development which is a style of social, infrastructural, political and economic model that are recommended to be practiced in other states India. The state has successfully achieved commendable improvements in our social indicators with high material quality life as compared to many developed countries even with a lower per capita income in comparison to them, credits can be given to the unbiased redistribution of wealth and resources into programs that have largely contributed to the indicators. It is also the first ever state in achieving low level of infant mortality rate and longer life expectancy. The highest literacy rate has brought lower levels of population growth and political awareness among masses. Kerala has thus turned out be the most ideal state that is a role model for every 3rd world and 2nd world countries around the world.

Keralam has reached 60 and thriving. The State is supposed to have derived its name by some from ‘Kera’ and ‘Alam’ meaning ‘coconut tree’ and ‘land of coconuts’ respectively.

Agriculture had played

a significant role in the development of the State during the early years of its formation. Coconut, tea, coffee, rubber, cashew and spices are grown in the State extensively. The predominance of agriculture is confirmed in an Assocham study which ranked Kerala in the third position with regard to actual exports and investments through Agri Export Zones. Out of the total production of Black Pepper in India, it is stated

12

February 2017

that almost 97% is from Kerala; on the same note, 85% of natural rubber is also from this State. Kerala with its long coastal belt and extensive inland water resources has made its mark on marine fishery production in India. A leading magazine had once listed 6 Malayalees in their list of 100 richest Indians – of which, five made their fortune from the Gulf countries. The impact in economy of Kerala due to the migration

(which started more than 50 years ago) to Gulf region is huge. The Gulf countries have held the Keralites in high esteem for their employability in those regions. Further, these immigrants in the Gulf region led to the rapid improvement of cultural, economic, and political ties between India and those countries. If it was laborers who migrated in the initial stages, the later years have seen professionals such as architects, doctors,

METRO mart T H I R U VA N A N T H A P U R A M

engineers, and specialists from several other fields marching on to the West Asian countries. This is mainly due to the high literacy rate of Kerala’s population. Kerala was crowned ‘State with Total Literacy’ on April 18, 1991. Kerala is also the first state to achieve 100% primary education. The State should thank its Kings, social reformers, pioneers, Ministers, and the elected representatives who have toiled hard to educate the masses. They considered that educational revolution is the key to development and empowerment. Speaking of empowerment, Kerala is one of those States which has strived to educate women and achieve women empowerment through Community Development societies. Societies such as Kudumbasree and Janasree have several initiatives which support women through microentrepreneurial activities. The Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation has also embarked on holistic development of women in Kerala. The State has derived national and international appreciation through its efficient handling of women empowerment projects. www.metromartdaily.com

IT sector has been promoted largely by Kerala. It was in 1990 that the first IT park in the country – ‘Technopark’ – was conceptualized in Kerala. In terms of built-up area, it is the largest Information Technology park in Asia. Providing employment to over 50,000 professionals in over 350 companies, the Technopark has given Kerala an edge over other states. It is also one of world’s greenest Technopolis, thus addressing the environment management as well. Over the years, other initiatives such as Technocity and Smart City have also come up from the government generating more employment opportunities. Tourism is another sector which has contributed significantly to the growth of Kerala’s economy. The State had several scenic locations which were discovered and nurtured by the British in the preindependence era. As another positive outcome of Gulf migration, during the 1980s, several travel operators started their businesses in Kerala. The potential of Kerala as a tourist destination was realized further and further from then on. The hospitality sector started to flourish by the early

2000s. From the beginning of 21st century Kerala has been receiving several recognitions and awards from across the world. The titles Kerala has received over the years include, ‘One of the 10 paradises in the world’, ‘One of the 100 great trips for the 21st century’, and ‘One of the 10 hotspots for the millennium.’ Tourism avenues have grown from picnic spots, beaches, hill stations to health tourism, pilgrimage tourism, adventure tourism and such. The transportation facilities in Kerala have grown considerably over the last 60 years. Kerala is one of those states which has transportation facilities through air, water and land. The State saw its first airport in 1932 in Thiruvananthapuram. Currently the State has four international airports – Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Kannur. Kerala is connected by railways from the southern end of the State to the north. The State is connected by railways to almost all other States in the country. The longest running train in India, ‘Dibrugarh - Kanyakumari Vivek Express’ passes through Kerala and six other February 2017

states. Government of Kerala formed Kerala State Road Transport Corporation in 1965. The corporation currently has more than 6000 buses in their fleet transporting passengers in over 14 Lakh kilometers each day. Inland water transport facilities by Kerala State Water Transport Department was formed in 1968 and has around 80 boats in its fleet presently. With 13 stations, it ferries around 80,000 people. Healthcare sector in Kerala is another area where rapid development is seen over the last 60 years. The State had already been a forerunner in the healthcare space with its traditional Ayurvedic treatments. The other traditional treatment modalities such as Siddha, Marmachikitsa, Kalari, and Vishavaidyam have also played its part. The State has been pioneers in implementing universal health care initiatives. The year 2014 saw Kerala offering free cancer treatment to the poor becoming the first State to do so. Several private players are also doing their part in providing healthcare facilities to the public. The advancement in healthcare sector is so much so that

14

February 2017

Kerala has attained a place in the Health Tourism map. It should be noted the development of Kerala is the result of people’s active participation and involvement. Religious and political activism has lead to the people keeping up-to-date on the current developments and raised their voice as and when required. Right from 1959, local government bodies – Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations – have formulated policies and taken up initiatives for the betterment of the public. The multi-party democratic framework has aided in development across regions and population categories. The State has reached 60 after seeing a lot of development. However, it is now facing stiff competition from other states across the nation. Social infrastructure development, industryfriendly policies, better connectivity to other states, etc. are the need of the hour for keeping one up above the other states. The ensuing metro projects in the State would definitely augur well for going the extra mile. The government has undertaken several programs to enhance the production of food crops and cash crops in the State. Scientific

methods of cultivation should be promoted for better production, so as to attain self sufficiency in food sector. In the literacy segment, the government should continue its vigil to formulate the best educational policies and ensure easy to reach to educational centers to all. The offline and online media should promote the cultural vibrancy of the State and highlight the positive aspects in Kerala. To summarize, all that the State has achieved over the years is the result of collective thinking and effort. With continued awareness and high participation from the public and a well-organized Government administration Kerala can definitely ensure continued development and retain its high rankings in various sectors. There is no magic wand…… only determination and perseverance. As the State celebrates Diamond Jubilee this year let us all look back, take stock, be happy with the positive outcomes, ponder the shortcomings, rectify the fault lines, and march forward to make things better. Let’s think and work together for Kerala!

The Might of Goddess Kannaki Neha Selokar

Attukal Pongala is the most important festival of Attukal Bhagavathy temple. The festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by the women, which lead to it getting recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. The temple holds a great history of belief and trust.

A few centuries ago, the

head of Mulluveettil family, Karanavar, met a young girl while he was performing ritualistic prayers on the bank of Killi River. The girl sought Karanavar’s help to cross the river. Karanavar bowed before her and willingly took her to the other side of the river. He somehow knew, it was no

ordinary girl because of her charm and charisma. He invited that girl to his home and the whole family of Karanavar was ready to welcome her, but she vanished in a couple of seconds, Karanavar and his family was surprised and shocked. That very night she appeared as an icon in the old man’s dream and

told him to give abode in a nearby place. She told him that he would see 3 lines at specific point in the Kavu and the very next morning Karanavar found 3 marks indented on the ground. After that he wasted no time in erecting temple which became the abode of the goddess (Attukal Devi). The local devotees placed a

majestic icon of deity with four hands and offered their prayers with reverence. India has always been the holy land of gods and goddesses. The Attukal Bhagvathy temple is one of the ancient temples in South India noted as the Sabarimala of women, due to women forming the major portion of devotees. The girl that appeared before Karanavar and his family is believed to be the divine form of Kannaki, the famous heroine of Chilapathikaram, a Tamil epic written by Elenkovadikal. She happens to be the incarnation of Sree Parvathy, the consort of Lord Paramashiva. The Attukal Pongala is the most important festival of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, which attracts devotees from all over India. Tens

of thousands of women devotees throng together on the day of Pongala with their offerings to the Goddess and to seek blessings. The festival commences on Karthika day of Malayalam month Makaram- Kumbham (February- March). It is a ten-day program, on the 9th day; hundreds of women visit the temple to offer earthen pots. The rush of women is so intense that Attukal Pongala festival reached Guinness Book of World Records of largest annual gathering of women. Around 15 lakh women offered Pongala on February 23, 1997 and it reached 25 lakh women offering Pongala on 10th March of 2009. Other activities during the ten-day festival include various ceremonial rituals like Kappukettu, during which the story of Goddess

Kannaki is recited. It is a musical recitation and goes on for the first nine days of the festival. The musical recitation of Kannaki’s story ends with the part of the Goddess annihilating the Pandya King. Anyone visiting the Attukal temple is first struck by the beauty and charm of the temple architecture. The temple structure is a harmonious conglomeration of both Kerala and Tamil styles of architecture. The exteriors of the temple are carved with hundreds of sculptures of gods, goddesses, the stories of Dashavatharam (ten incarnations) of Lord Vishnu, Goddess Kannaki, Dakshayaga, etc. The temple doors and internal corridors also have several sculptures of Gods like Lord Ganapathi (Ganesh), Lord Shiva, etc.

Yes it’s a day out for her from the turbulent circumstances that bind her to the ground. Nowhere in the world will you see men folk taking a backseat to ensure that the women get her long overdue freedom. Attukal Pongala is this and more. The ritual has a magic touch about it that throws to wind all your logics and logistics. It is a ritual that involves millions of womenfolk. The entire city becomes a cauldron with smoke pervading the whole atmosphere. Even with fire and breeze in every nook and corner, every possible alleyway and every possible pavement, no mishap has been reported. This is truly a miracle. To what ideology other than pure benevolence of the presiding deity of Attukal

They come in hordes two days back with bundles, braving the sun they settle in pavements, sleep on the grounds, eat from the small kiosks waiting for that auspicious hour when they could feed their deity with their humble offering. day of the festival. The preparations for the smooth functioning of the ritual starts one month before. While the administration looks after the provision for all amenities from water to traffic, the city takes on another look. Peddlers, hawkers and food stalls occupy both sides that lead to the temple. Exploding firecrackers and devotional songs fill the air. Woman folk welcomed and propitiated Devi and to commemorate this occasion, woman offer Pongala during the festive season. Hailed as the largest congregation of woman folk, Attukal Pongala got an entry into the Limca book of world records. It’s really difficult to fathom the devotion of these simpletons who come here

every year with greater vigor. After all what do they get from Amma? May be they don’t want to conquer the world, they just want a blessing to tide away their daily toils. They just want to make sure that their mother is with them in all their action. The Pongala interpreted as the representation of God realization through five elements like fire, air, water, earth and space is way beyond their cognition. The God realization or self

realization is the ultimate goal of Pongala. The word Pongala which literally means boiling over is equivalent to awakening the Kundalini power from Mooladhara to Sahasra Padma. Such lofty ideal doesn’t mean anything to these simpletons. They just come to feed their mother and Devi in turn accepts their offerings and showers them with blessings. They leave every year promising to come again with pure love.

TRIVANDRUM MOTORS

MAKING ITS MARK IN CAR DEALERSHIP Trivandrum Motors is the

sole authorized dealer for passenger car segment of Tata Motors in Trivandrum and Kollam districts. Since its inception in April 2016, Trivandrum Motors has dealt with all brands of cars from the Tata stable. The inception also saw the launch of Tiago. The other brands include Nano, Zest, Bolt, Safari, and Sumo. The city saw Trivandrum Motors launching Tata Hexa in February of this year. Along with their head office at Enchakkal-Kovalam Bypass Road, in Poonthura Trivandrum, they have branches at Kollam, Kottarakkara, Neyyatinkara and Varkala. The dealership has G. Pradeep Kumar as its Chief Operating Officer, Sankara Pillai as General Manager Admin & PR, and V. Venugopalan Nair as

36

February 2017

General Manager Finance. The Managing Director of Trivandrum Motors Hari Kumar Mohandas is a businessman in the construction sector and oil field support services in Kuwait. He was born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram. The customer-oriented approach of Trivandrum Motors and the popularity of Tata vehicles has led to the dealership growing at a fast pace. This is very evident from the figures. Just in December 2016 alone, Trivandrum Motors sold 150 vehicles. This dealer has also grabbed the second position among Tata dealers in Kerala for selling the most number of Tiago cars in December 2016. Another significant achievement for Trivandrum Motors

is getting the first two bookings and making the first two sales of Hexa in Kerala. The dealership has sold around 360 vehicles in a short span of 10 months, which is no small feat. The customer-centric functioning of Trivandrum Motors has played a great part in this. The new 3S (Sales, Service & Spares) facility that is coming up near Karikkakom would make Trivandrum Motors provide faster response times to queries, match customer demand and ensure the customers derive a great experience. This facility has all facilities such as body shop, painting, accessories, customization, etc. Trivandrum Motors has tie-ups with almost all banks, which enables them to provide financing

options. Knowing that the service technicians at Trivandrum Motors are highly trained professionals would give customers peace of mind. They are trained at Tata Motors so as the standard of care is maintained always.

within a short period. He also added that to facilitate greater access for customers, Trivandrum Motors would be adding more Sales and Service branches in locations which are far-off from their current branches.

The confidence meted out by the General Manager Sales & Service of Trivandrum Motors V.I. Gopakumar is contagious. He voiced that they will be reaching their benchmark of 100 vehicles per month

The showrooms of Trivandrum Motors are ideally located. Customers can walk in, browse through the range of vehicles, analyse the models up close, test drive their selection, and make

an informed decision. The personnel at the dealership are friendly and approachable. They clarify the customer’s queries and respond to any assistance requested. The team works with one motto – customer satisfaction. Surely, we would see Trivandrum Motors scaling greater heights and setting standards for other dealerships in terms of Sales as well as customer satisfaction.

Hari Kumar Mohandas Managing Director, Trivandrum Motors Pvt Ltd

“The State can expect an impressive growth with a business-friendly approach and avoidance of blockades and hartals. The manpower from Kerala has aided development of several sectors in foreign countries. The remittances from these countries and the growth of business segments lateral to the IT parks has increased the purchasing power and positively influenced the standard of living of Keralites. Vizhinjam Port, four-laning of bypass, etc. would indeed lead Thiruvananthapuram to develop at a fast pace. Once the Vizhinjam project is completed, the economy of the city would see a dynamic growth. With regard to Trivandrum Motors, the dealership of Tata Motors is only a first step. There will be more projects from us. Our new office and showroom is nearing completion. The modern 3S facility will have international standards, which makes it possible for servicing around 40 vehicles at a time. We believe customers should be able to access our line of products more easily and for this, we will be setting up outlets in several other towns, especially in rural areas. I believe, the team at Trivandrum Motors is highly motivated and qualified to provide a stiff competition in the field of automobile dealerships - in Sales, Service and Customer Satisfaction.”

KOCHI TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TOURISM TECHNOLOGY Kochi, Jan 13: The growing significance of technology in tourism industry will come up for deliberations at the second edition of International Conference on Tourism Technology (ICTT), to be held here in June. Association of Tourism Trade Organisation (ATTOI) will organise the three-day event at Le Meridien Hotel from June 8 to 10. The three-day conference, supported by Kerala Tourism, will feature an array of speakers and subject experts from across the globe who will offer their insights on the effective usage of social media platforms to promote tourism business. “The first edition of ICTT held in Thiruvananthapuram was a runaway hit and widely appreciated for its content as well as the conduct. In fact, it was the first of its kind event in Kerala at a time when digitization was

44

February 2017

gradually catching up the tourism world,” said ATTOI President Anish Kumar P.K. “The significance of technology in tourism industry has taken a giant leap forward as it is faced with more complex requirements and more tech savvy customers,” he added. ICTT 2017 aims at helping the tourism industry players to stay abreast with the latest technology through effective usage of the digital platform. This will also enable them to reach out to all parts of the globe and make their presence noticed. “The fall in tourist arrivals, along with the growing internal and external competition, has raised demand for alternative marketing techniques and cutting edge technology to stay ahead in the race. ICTT 2017 will not only impart the much needed knowledge to the delegates

but also conduct workshops to help them leverage this learning for cost-effective solutions,” pointed V Sreekumara Menon, Secretary, ATTOI. Around 500 delegates, comprising tour operators, hoteliers, resort owners, homestays, SEO (search engine optimization) companies, software firms, social media marketing companies and bloggers, are slated to attend the conference. As a prelude to the event, ATTOI organized a Facebook Live campaign in December at Thiruvananthapuram to promote Kerala as a honeymoon destination after the state won an award for the Best Honeymoon destination in India, based on a readers’ poll conducted by ‘Travel + Leisure’ magazine. ‘BIENNALE ARTWORKS PLAY WITH TRUTH, PERCEPTION’: SANJANA KAPOOR Observing a playful

quality in the artworks on display at the ongoing third edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), noted theatre practitioner and actress Sanjana Kapoor described India’s only Biennale as a “beautiful” experience. “There is a kind of playfulness to the works this time. It feels like the artists are playing with the ideas of what visitors can see, what they can perceive and what the truth is. There are so much more immersive and experiential exhibits this time,” said Kapoor, formerly the head of the famed Prithvi theatre in Mumbai. A repeat visitor to the

46

February 2017

Biennale, Kapoor felt “at least three days are needed to experience this spectacle” in its entirety. Kapoor, who made her acting debut in the classic film 36 Chowringhee Lane – produced by her father Shashi Kapoor and starring her mother Jennifer Kendal, was disappointed to have missed out on the performances of the stage productions that are part of KMB 2016, but lauded the inclusion of theatre in the Biennale space. Of the performances she did manage to partake in during her visit to primary venue Aspinwall House today, Kapoor said Lundahl and Seitl’s ‘blindfold tour’ installation ‘Symphony of a Missing Room: An Imagines Museum’ stood out.

“The idea, the implementation and the way I was guided and instructed about what to hear and what not to see. The most fascinating part of that work is the trust that it demands. I had to put faith in the person who guided me, to trust the whole concept of the artist. For me, it is an important work at a time when people are cynical and sceptical about everything,” she said. Kapoor, who was accompanied by Keli festival director K. Ramachandran on her visit, said, “Having the tour end at the ‘Sea of Pain’ was a mind-blowing experience. Raúl Zurita’s poetry installation is the most powerful work in the Biennale.”

EVOKE MYRIAD OF EMOTIONS WITH M.S. AJITHKUMAR’S ‘BISKA’ It is heartening to see

that there are quite a few authors who consistently lead us to the fascinating use of the Malayalam language. M.S. Ajithkumar is one among them. He has recently published a collection of Malayalam short stories in a book titled ‘Biska’. At the book release function in Fourth Estate Hall of Press Club, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. George Onakkoor handed over the first copy to Prof. G.N. Panicker. M.S. Ajithkumar has written and published two novels and 1 short story collection in Malayalam. He also has written a novel in English.

48

February 2017

The assortment tries to achieve a lot of reactions from the readers. When one story might make the reader introspective, another story would make him/her realize the irony of the situation. The author seems to hop on and off through a wide range of themes in this anthology. The first story of the collection ‘Biska’ – a new word to be introduced to the Malayalam readers – tells us the story of how two snakes were annihilated. The stories, some of which has a mythical or dreamy sequence, makes one ponder on the wide variety of societal interactions

and views that existed or are still prevalent. While the story ‘Kaali Paadha’ has a mythical overtone intertwined with the modern day, ‘Oru Techie Talk’ deals with a Techie family. The collection of short stories is beautifully written in Malayalam and each of the stories creates a sensory and emotional effect in the reader with the fascinating use of the language. Just the myriad of themes itself make the book a must-read. For the Malayalam language-lovers, the book would definitely be a worthy addition to their collection.

Karl Benz was the person who put a motor in a car(otherwise chariot) and said that one could drive it; in 1886 by creating the Benz Patent-Motorwagen which was of course the first gasoline powered automobile in the world. Gottlieb Daimler originally founded Daimler-MotorenGesellschaft (DMG) in 1890, while Karl Benz began Benz & Cie in 1883. Both businesses laid the foundation of motorized vehicle transportation. After Daimler passed away in 1900, chief engineer Wilhelm Maybach took over and brought on racing enthusiast Emil Jellinek as a partner. Jellinek’s daughter Mercédès–a Spanish girl’s name meaning “grace”was the inspiration for the later trade name. In 1909,

Daimler’s sons Paul and Adolf recalled an 1872 picture postcard sent by their father to their mother with a three-pointed star marking the location of his house in Germany with the explanation that one day the star would shine over his factory and bring prosperity. The logo of the three pointed star has more to tell than we know of. According to MercedesBenz, it’s logo shows the Automakers drive toward universal perfection and shows they will conquer the three points of the Land the Sea and the Air and reach world domination. Today the Mercedes brand is over a hundred and thirty years old, making it the oldest car manufacturer in the world. 
