A DIVISION OF HAPPY & RUBY GROUP

 Foreword Dear Readers, Rains bring a welcome break in the hot and parched Indian summer. The monsoon pattern in Kerala isn’t all about constant pitter patter. It rains and then the sun shines. Some days it might rain constantly but sun does interrupt the raining Gods. Such is the twisty but interesting rain trend in Kerala! This is one reason why monsoon season in Kerala boosts rejuvenation therapies for the people. The climate becomes cool and dust-free. This stimulates the body pores to get the maximum benefits out of herbal oils and therapy that ensures greater flexibility of muscles and agility in body. The art forms seen in Kerala require total control over each body nerve. The monsoon therapy through special oils works on the body of the artist making each muscle strong and supple. Another important pit stop for rain lovers is Wayanad and a monsoon carnival - ‘Splash’ - is the key attraction. Organised annually by the Tourism Department in association with the Wayanad Tourism Organisation, the event this year will be held from July 7 to 9. Splash, is a joint venture by Kerala Tourism, Government of Kerala & the Wayanad Tourism Organisation. This year, Resorts & Homestays from neighbouring areas like Coorg, Nilgiris, Mysore, Kannur, Kasargod & Bekal will also participate in the event. Destination visit, Property visit, Outdoor activities, Adventure activities, Cultural programmes, Sponsored programmes are some of the other major highlights of the event.

Wayanad

-flawlessly adorned by nature’s everlasting splendour

Wayanad is one of the few districts in Kerala that has been able to retain its pristine nature. The prehistoric engravings discovered in the Edakkal Caves and around Ambukuthymala bear testimony to the pre-historic culture in Kerala dating back to the Mesolithic Age.

It

is known for its cool highland climate, misty peaks and its virgin forests. Wayanad also played a prominent role in the history of the subcontinent. It is often called the spice garden of the south, the land of paddy fields, and the home of the monsoons. Wayanad has become a much beloved tourist destination with its rustic charm and natural beauty. Apart from the scenic drives and the green rolling hills, Wayanad’s lakes, waterfalls and mountain streams make for ideal picnic spots. Wayanad is therefore a must visit for any traveler with a soft spot for nature and her artistry. Adventure seekershave plenty to choose from with trekking, camping, mountain biking, speed boating, ziplines and zorbing on offer. Wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers can have a timeof their lives with forest trails, tree houses and wildlife safaris. Wayanad also has plenty of attractions for history and architecture lovers.

www.metromartdaily.com

Chembra Peak At a height of 2100 metres, the towering Chembra Peak is located near Meppadi in the southern part of Wayanad. It is the tallest of peaks in the region and climbing this peak would test ones physical prowess. The climb up the Chembra Peak is an exhilarating experience, as each stage in the climb unfolds great expanses of Wayanad and the view gets wider as one goes up to its summit. Going up and coming down the peak would take a full day. Those who would like camp at the top are assured of an unforgettable experience. Those who require camping gear may contact the District Tourism Promotion Council, located at Kalpetta in Wayanad.

Neelimala Located in the southeastern part of Wayanad, and approachable from Kalpetta as well as SulthanBathery, Neelimala is a

trekkers delight, with options for different trekking routes. At the top of Neelimala, the sight is a breathtaking one with a view to the Meenmutty falls located near by and the valley in the foreground.

Meenmutty waterfalls Located close to Neelimala the spectacular Meenmutty falls can be reached through a 2 km trekking route from the main road connecting Ootty and Wayanad. It is the largest of waterfalls in the district of Wayanad, and adds to ones curiosity with its three stage falls dropping from about 300 metres.

Chethalayam Yet another waterfall that attracts visitors to Wayanad is the Chethalayam falls, located close to SulthanBathery in the northern part of Wayanad. This waterfall is smaller in size when compared to Meenmutty. The falls and the adjoining areas are ideal locales for trekking and a haunt for bird watchers.

Pakshipathalam Pakshipathalam is located deep within the forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700 metres. The region predominantly comprises large boulders, some of them really massive. The deep caves found here are home to a wide

variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants. Pakshipathalam is located near Mananthavady and a visit to the region would require a 7 km trek through the forest, starting from Thirunelli. Visitors to Pakshipathalam are to seek permission from the DFO- North Wayanad.

BanasuraSagar Dam The dam at BanasuraSagar is reckoned as the largest earth dam in India. The dam is located in the southwestern part of Wayanad district and is close to the Karalad Lake. The project area of the BanasuraSagar Dam also has the start point for treks to the Banasura Peak. An interesting feature is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. While you take in the captivating sights, sounds and fragrance of Wayanad, you may also shop for some specialities of Wayanad like spices, coffee, tea, bamboo products, honey and herbal plants.

Seetha Lava Kusha Temple This temple was built by Pazhassi Raja and is dedicated to Goddess Sita and her twin sons Lava and Kusha. It is an important location in the Hindu epic of Ramayana, as it is believed that Sita Devi lived here with her sons after being banished by

Lord Rama. The temple also has the largest temple pond in Kerala.

Thirunelly Temple, PapanashiniAndThrissilery Temple The ancient Hindu temple of Thirunelly sits in a picturesque valley, surrounded by dense forests and mountains. It is known as DakhinKashi or the “Kashi of the South”. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and believed to be about 1000 years old. The ancient architecture here includes 30 granite pillars and an aqueduct. The holy mountain stream, Papanassini, is located close to the temple, and is said to wash away the sins of a lifetime. The Shiva Temple at Thrishilery is intrinsically linked with Thirunelly. In fact, holy rituals performed at Thirunelly are considered complete only after an offering is made at Thrishilery.

Jain Temple, SulthanBathery The Jain Temple in SulthanBathery, built in the 13th century is one of the most important Jain temples in Kerala. The architecture here was heavily influenced by the style of the then ruling Vijayanagara Empire. The temple has played the role of a shrine, a centre of commerce and even as Tipu Sultan’s ammunition store. In fact the town of SulthanBathery (Sultan’s Battery) is named after this temple.

Pazhassi Raja Tomb The Pazhassi Raja tomb was built in memory of Kerala VarmaPazhassi Raja, known as the Lion of Kerala. The tomb was constructed in the place where his body was cremated, and is situated in Mananthavady. Pazhassi Raja was an heir of the Kottayam royal family and was one of the earliest people to have revolted against the East India Company. The Pulpally Cave where Pazhassi Raja took refuge during the war lies near the tomb.

mural paintings, ancient coins, models of temples, and umbrella stones are housed in this museum. The memorial is managed by the Kerala State Archaeology Department.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is considered to be the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and bio-geographically one of the richest tracts of peninsular India.

Wayanad Heritage Museum The Heritage Museum at Ambalavayal houses one of the richest collections of historic artifacts in Wayanad. The museum is one of the best and most well maintained in Kerala, with exhibits that were sourced almost exclusively from Wayanad. It explores Wayanad’s ancient history and culture, as well as its tribal population and their customs.

Underneath the tomb is a museum which contains Pazhassi Raja’s sword and other information about the cultural history of Kerala. Some of his possessions such as www.metromartdaily.com

Edakkal Caves Located at about 1200 ft above the sea level, the Edakkal Caves are among the oldest human settlements ever discovered. Inside the caves are pictorial drawings and engravings that indicate the presence of ancient human settlements in the region. Despite their name, the Edakkal Caves are not actually caves. They are part of a pre historic rock shelter, formed naturally when one huge boulder got wedged between two bigger ones. The name Edakkal itself means “a stone in between. The Edakkal cave paintings are remarkable in their sheer scale and complexity, but their origins are shrouded in mystery. Ever since their discovery in 1895, they have been a source of awe and wonder for tourists and historians alike.

Karapuzha Dam This earthen dam built across the Karapuzha River is a popular picnic spot thanks to its calm waters and the natural beauty of its surroundings. Boating and nature walks are some activities to be pursued here.

Kuruva Islands Kuruva Islands or the KuruvaDweep is

popular among tourists for its calm and serene surroundings. Spread over 950acres of land, it takes a minimum of 3 hours to explore this uninhabited island. Located in the middle of the Kabani River, it houses a vast array of rare flora and fauna. The islands entry point is operated by DTPC, Wayanad at Palvelicham near Mananthavady There are bamboo rafts at both the entry points to take tourists to the island. The island has bamboo walkways and bridges to help traverse through the jungle and the streams during the rainy season. The dense forests provide shelter for butterflies and birds, making it the ideal spot for bird watchers. The bamboo benches placed along the jungle tracks are a respite for tired legs.

Wayanad Adventure Camp, Karlad Lake Wayanad Adventure Camp is an adventure sports location maintained by the DTPC. Lying on the shores of the charming Karlad Lake, this adventure camp offers a great variety of fun activities to pursue. Kayaking, rock climbing, paintball, archery, boating and land zorbing are all part of the experience here, and it also has the longest zipline across a lake in South India. The camp also houses a conference hall and

several camping tents, making it a great offbeat location for corporate trips.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary Lying towards the north of the district of Wayanad, this region harbours a rich diversity of flora. Open to wildlife jeep safari twice a day, you are bound to spot various animals and bird species in their natural habitat during the 1.5-2 hour journey. A lake where animals come down for a drink is a major attraction here. The forests constitute various forest types like the tropical moist dry deciduous, patches of semi evergreen forests and trees and plants like the bamboo and long spiky bushes of ginger. Plantations of teak, eucalyptus, silver oak and rosewood cover about one third of the sanctuary.

Chain Tree The Chain Tree located in Lakkidi, is a popular source of intrigue among the tourists and locals, thanks to a curious story about its origins.

tribesmen. The British wanted to seek out a passage to Wayanad, and it was Karinthandan who provided them with this knowledge. But once they had what they came for, they executed him in an area that was previously used for ritual animal sacrifice. The story goes on to say that this area became the haunt for Karinthandan’s vengeful spirit. After several disturbing incidents, a ritual was conducted, and his spirit was bound to a chain. This chain was tied to a Ficus tree, and there are claims that the chain is apparently growing along with the tree. e food business particularly of restaurants was receiving low recognition. This was mainly due to a lack of mechanism that could highlight the professionalism and dynamism involved. However, there comes a time in life when acumen and skills has to be focused upon and the good showing of their workmanship needs to be duly rewarded. This time, the diners shall be voting and acknowledging the efforts made by experts in the culinary field who have rendered good food and a good dining experience. It is a big challenge to evaluate the top restaurants and food joints in the cities of Kerala, and recommend the same to the public to vote for their favourite eating venue. Metro Mart is rising up to the challenge. Any award function puts up competing participants in the best spirit and tone so that it becomes a reference point in future award ceremonies. That’s the same at Metro Food Awards Summit, which would be an apt platform for the participants to showcase their potential and worth in appeasing the palate of the

Emphasis on Labour-andIndustry-friendly Atmosphere - Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan

The

Government of Kerala’s Labour and Excise ministries have taken several decisive steps during the first year under the leadership of Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan. “Labour Ministry’s aim is to ensure proper wages and social security for the workers while retaining an industry-friendly atmosphere. Betterment of labourers and ensuring employability of upcoming generation is given appropriate significance by the minister while formulating policies as well as taking up projects under the labour department. Minimum wages has been revised in 18 segments. Welfare board has increased the pension amounts to Rs. 1100 from Rs. 600. The Labour ministry has distributed over Four Crores of pension money to 384871 beneficiaries during this one year period. The high demand for increasing the income limit for availing Karshaka Thozhilali Pension was met by increasing it to Rupees One Lakh. 385111 labourers from traditional segments such as Fisheries, Khadi, handloom, Eatta, Kattu Valli, have received Rupees Sixty Five Crores under the income support scheme. Innovative approach by the ministry is seen

V Viswanath in the introduction of grading system for shops and commercial establishments. Specific parameters have been fixed for grading such as best employer, most satisfied employees, enhanced working atmosphere, steps taken by the company in enhancing skills of employees, womenfriendly atmosphere, and secure working environment. This would surely see a dramatic change in working environment scenario in the State. Enforcement inspections have been carried out in private textile and hospital establishments. Another project by the State which is noticed even in countries such as Venezuela and France is ‘Avaas.’ This health insurance scheme is for the benefit of labourers from other states. This scheme is activated in association with the Health, Home and Local Self Government ministries. Migrant labourers can register and avail themselves of a health card which would enable them to access free health care at empanelled hospitals. ‘Apna Ghar’ is another project by the LDF government which is set to be launched in Kanjikkod, Palakkad. Residential facilities for 640 people would be provided under this scheme to workers from other states. It would be extended to other districts

MPEDA operationalises

‘Green Certification’ scheme to curb wild capture of ornamental fishes

Ta

Maximum subsidy of Rs 10 lakh under Ornamental Fish Assistance Scheme

pping into the huge potential of ornamental fishery as a livelihood option and foreign exchange earner, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has launched a subsidy scheme for the setting up of breeding units of colourful aquarium fishes and marketing societies in various states to facilitate their export. Through its new Ornamental Fish Assistance Scheme, MPEDA, an agency of the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry, provides subsidy for the ornamental fishery to registered Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Marketing Societies. Financial assistance is provided at the rate of 25 per cent of the total investment, subject to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh. Earlier, it was providing subsidy under a three-tier gradation scheme. Under Grade I, maximum financial assistance was Rs 75,000 for a breeding unit, Rs 2 lakh under Grade II, and Rs 7.5 lakh under Grade III. “Through its subsidy schemes, the Authority has established ornamental fish breeding units in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pra desh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh,” Dr. A Jayathilak, Chairman, MPEDA, said at the three-day Aqua Aquaria India (AAI) 2017, a biennial exposition on India’s ornamental 44 July 2017

fishery and aquaculture sector that began at Mangalore yesterday. During FY 2015-16, the company assisted 22 units with a financial involvement of Rs. 95.01 lakhs. “These units are functioning well and contributing to favourable exports from their units,” he added. MPEDA has also launched a ‘Green Certification’ scheme, the first of its kind for the freshwater ornamental fishery, to curb the harmful impact of wild capture

of aquarium fishes and help maintain the environmental and economic sustainability. It has also successfully completed a project on breeding techniques of indigenous fresh water species of the Western Ghats. “The scheme will help reduce dependence on wild stocks and ensure that the fish collection is done in tune with the principles of ecosystem management,” Dr. Jayathilak pointed out. “Green certification and eco-labelling are now considered imperative to sustain the ornamental fish resources and boost the product image.” On the issue of aquarium accessories and equipments (plants, aeration units and feed) being mostly imported from China, he said MPEDA is imparting training programmes in areas like aquarium

fabrication, assembling of filters and production of live feed. “More initiatives would come up in this regard. Several ‘Lab to Farm’ projects have to be implemented to transfer technologies from various research organisations to the field.” High freight charges for ornamental fish export by leading carriers, non-acceptance of live fish cargo by certain carriers, lack of quarantine facilities at major ports, and unavailability of pure strain of brood stock leading to poor quality and less survival rate of marketable size fish are among the major problems affecting the aquarium industry. Also, there is absence of an organised domestic market in many states for aquarium fish that needs to be addressed. 

urveda in its definition of health says “Prasanna Aatma Indriya mana” which clearly emphasizes the importance of having a pleasant state of mind to be called healthy. Ayurveda considers body as the vessel that holds our mind and soul. Manas /mind is considered as both the ‘Jnanendriya’-sense organ to attain knowledge and ‘Karmendriya’ to perform action. i.e. to perform to our highest potential in thought and action one needs to have a ‘ pleasant’ state of mind. How do we bring back “A pleasant state of mind”? Ayurvedic text Ashtanga Hridyalays emphasis on following a ‘Dinacharya’/ daily routine because the physiological functioning of the body is very well adapted to and supported by a sense of regularity. Ways to harmonize your mind & body: 1.Harmonize your pace: However busy you are right now and impossible you might think it might be, the first thing you need to do is ‘slow down’. Life is something you need to enjoy and savor. It may not be easy but you have to take back control of your own life.

Malabar Giant Squirrel Meet the exotic Indian giant squirrel (Malabar giant squirrel ) one of the worlds most beautiful and largest tree squirrel species on earth . With its rust , tan , beige or brown colouring and the 2 feet long bushy tail , it leaves a lasting impression on you . Elusive and secretive they are primarily an upper canopy dwelling species leaping from tree to tree , easily covering a distance of up to 6 m ( 20 feet) in one go .So seeing this exquisite creature at eye level was an immense stroke of luck . The green shoot encircling the tree is striking against the brown foliage, wiping out the remnants of a dreadful summer. The cycle of life once again begins in the forest ... it is the season of new growth , renewal and new life being born.
