The month of June is exciting for Keralites. After all, there is so much to enjoy and take pride in. Yes, India is rising, and Trivandrum is poised for a massive makeover with the arrival of India’s largest shipment port Vijhinjam, which would accommodate the largest mother shipments of the world. Trivandrum is looking forward to large scale expansion in the sports field with the new Sports Hub to be set up in Kariavattom. This is expected to attract more international sports to the capital in the coming years. A Knowledge City will be soon established in the 100-150 acres of land spotted at Pallipuram along the NH 66.

Foreword

Dear Readers

In addition to its lovely coasts, backwaters, green hills, there is one more thing that’s encouraging tourists and that is Kerala’s Yoga tourism. Interestingly, Kerala has the largest number of Yoga retreats, clinics and experts in the world. Kerala Tourism has bagged a clutch of awards at FilmAT, one of the biggest international film festivals dedicated to tourism, art and ecology, in Poland. When NRI Malayalees from across the globe land in Kerala this July, they would inevitably head to Trivandrum’s leading designer boutique for their mandatory saree shopping spree.

The culinary festival, to be hosted by UNESCO, Kerala Tourism and the Union Tourism Ministry in Kochi from September 23-26, will witness leading chefs from the 31 countries converging to discover the famed gastronomic delights of the state. Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Shri V.K. Prasanth feted the ‘Donate Blood’ campaign, a life-saving initiative by HLL Lifecare Limited and Citizens India Foundation, at a function. All this goes to show that there is nothing more dynamic and versatile than Kerala.

By 2020, Trivandrum will pave way for a whole lot of new evolution in traffic management and control. Also, there will also be easy transportation facilities to reach Kovalam beach, Trivandrum’s most famous tourist spot. There will be a number of sky scrapers, especially at places like Vazhuthacaud, Statue and Palayam. Developments will strike at centers such as East Fort, Poojapura, Peroorkada and Ambalamukku. The Trivandrum Central Railway Station will be more advanced and will be one of the biggest and busiest stations of South India. The successful accomplishment of “Arteria” made the city witness one of the largest public art projects of India. No sooner, Trivandrum will turn out to be one of the

biggest metropolitan cities of India. What is unique about this city is that Trivandrum has always been known for retaining its tradition, while embracing

modernity with open arms and it strives to take forward the legacy without fail. Integrated Suburban Ecosystem

June 2016

The last budget session turned out to be anticipative Trivandrum for Trivandrum. In the words of Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, Trivandrum is soon to witness a suburban train service that would make life more comfortable for office-goers who hail from nearby cities like Kollam and Kayamkulam. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Thiruvananthapuram Sunil Bajpai says that a new mechanism to create an

integrated suburban ecosystem from the capital is in the making. The budget proposal, if implemented would ensure less travel time to Trivandrum and will turn out to be a boon for the IT employees at the Technopark. Taking into account the difficulty faced by passengers travelling in unreserved coaches, the integrated suburban ecosystem when implemented would create a paradigm shift in the way people arrive in and leave

the city. This service can be connected with other transport services being planned such as Rapid Rail, Light Metro etc. The project is supposed to be cost-neutral and the fares will be subsided according to what the minister has stated in his budget speech. Nevertheless, it’s going to be long way before the project becomes representative. Through an equal partnership with the state government, Suburban service will require elevated platforms,

new signaling systems, special coaches and proper functioning. A ransome of 320 crores has been allocated for this project which will ensure the doubling of TrivandrumKanyakumari stretch which will bring in a permanent solution for the acute traffic blocks in this line. Apart from this, Kochuveli station will receive an amount of 1 crore to complete various facilities that is still halfway. Sufficient wheel-chairs would be made available for physically challenged and a full time official will be posted to invigilate the availability

of these facilities at the Trivandrum central railway station. Remarkably, the budget did not make any mention about the most important amenities like drinking water plant and railway medical college that has be long-pending demands since many years. Also, it is important to mention that the WiFi facility to be implemented in Trivandrum Central Station that was announced last year is yet to be implemented. Despite of so many proposals made,

many significant measures were not mentioned in the budget. Inclusion of CCTV cameras, placing women compartments in a prime location within the station, a feeding room for mothers, provision for ramp facility, toilets for physically challenged etc were some of key aspects that should have been mentioned in the budget session. The minister appealed the state government to stagger the office timings to reduce

peak load on suburban traffic . Chengannur railway station will be spruced up considering its importance for Sabarimala pilgrimage. 19 such stations in the country will be given priority in passenger amenities and beautification. Sports Hub at Kariavattom Trivandrum is looking forward for large scale expansion in the sports

zone with the new Sports Hub to be planted in Kariavattom. The facility is expected to attract more international sports to the capital in the coming years. It was inaugurated by the Hon. chief minister Oommen Chandi . International events in the leagues of basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis are made possible with the completion of this project. This multi-purpose indoor sports complex will have three basketball, three volleyball, 12 badminton

and 20 table tennis courts. Advanced floodlights with illumination levels between 500 and 600 lumens and live television broadcast make it a state-of-the-art complex. The 58,000 sq. ft sports hub inside the Greenfield International Stadium guarantees that the complex will be useful for the public and a sports academy will also be established. Access for Public is ensured through a three-tier membership for the club house. Facilities in the stadium include indoor sports complex, outdoor facilities and privileged access to events and corporate boxes. The public can make use of these facilities. Kerala Football Association will soon have a tie up with the Greenfield Stadium for their domestic events. Also, in the near future, the stadium certified by the BCCI in order to host national and international cricket matches at the venue. Once completed, this will turn out to be the best sports infrastructure in the nation. Professional coaching will be passed on to the kids to take forward

their sporting aspirations. The coaching will be given for kids aged between 8 -16 years. Coaching will be carried out in cricket, football, swimming, table tennis, squash, basketball, tennis and volleyball. The entire complex is floored with Canadian maple wood. Disabled-friendly facilities are arranged at the pool, locker rooms and toilets. An Olympic-size eight-lane swimming pool (50m x 25m) and a mini indoor four-lane pool (16m x 6m) are other significant features of the sports hub. Apart from this, there will be three tennis courts, two squash courts, gymnasium and facilities for aerobics and yoga at the hub which is constructed under a public-private partnership model. Sewing Strategies for Traffic Hazard

The traffic problems at Kazhakootam were well investigated by Mayor V.K. Prasanth and Natpac team director B.G. Sreedevi recently. The agency will soon submit a short-term proposal to a civic body to deliver steadfast solution at the earliest. The city Corporation has to seek the services of the Natpac (National Transportation Planning and Research Centre) to solve the rising traffic issues in Kazhakuttam Junction and the adjoining areas. Technopark was also equally affected by the traffic chaos of this region. Under the leadership of Mayor V.K. Prasanth, the Natpac team led by its Director B.G. Sreedevi had visited Kazhakuttam Junction and the nearby areas on the peak traffic hours of morning, to research and get first-hand information on the traffic

issues being encountered by road users. The team visited the crucial areas such as the roads leading to Market Junction from the NH 66, the narrow stretch of High School road near Market Road Junction, the conflict points on the NH near AJ Hospital Junction, and the Kazhakuttam-Menamkulam stretch. Natpac officials T. Ramakrishnan and B. Anish Kini had accompanied the Director and the Mayor. Due to the disorganized parking on roadside, Kazhakuttam area has turned out to be a major traffic hazard for vehicle users as well as pedestrians. The Mayor elucidated that the traffic literally rages near the bus stops on the busy NH-66 stretch.

This plan will implement parking strategies, oneway regulation and other measures immediately to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the corridor. While formulating these proposals, the traffic pattern on this stretch after completion of the proposed elevated flyover at Kazhakuttam Bypass Junction and the four lanes of the NH 66 were also looked into without fail. The Natpac is also setting up a study into the traffic conflicts on the entry to Technopark, near Karyavattam. Suitable traffic management measures will be soon submitted to the civic body by the natpac.

Currently, Natpac has agreed to carry out a detailed traffic study of the Kazhakoottam stretch and give short-term proposals to solve the problems.

in the 100-150 acres of land spotted at Pallipuram along the NH 66. The budget had also set aside a sum of Rs.2.75 crores to the Special Purpose Vehicle for the comprehensive infrastructure development of Varkala, which is emerging as a major tourist spot. In order to connect Neyyar Dam with Aruvippuram, a new road will be constructed at the expense of Rs 20 crores. Also, an allocation of Rs.24.6 crores has been made for the University of Kerala. New courses will be launched at the Government Women’s College, Government University College, and Government Sanskrit College during the upcoming academic year. The College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, has also availed an amount of Rs.5 crores. Other allocations have also been made for the G.V. Raja Sports School, Mylam;

Vizhinjam Port Protest The Vizhinjam Seaport Action council had conducted a march to protest against the discrimination of fishermen community by government as they would lose their livelihood with the arrival of Vizhinjam port. The decision to conduct protest was taken in a meeting of representatives of the Vizhinjam Seaport Action Council. The march was an attempt to bring to the attention of the government the predicament of the fishermen community. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, in the meeting, had said that Rs 2,000 crore projects mentioned in the state budget are for the benefit of the fishermen community as well. But the community was dissatisfied about the meeting which had ended up in the protest. Light Metro

In a span of 5 years, the city is about to witness complete traffic-free roads. A 21.82 kilometer long metro from Technocity to Karamana and Fly overs in Kesavadasapuram, Pattom, Thampanoor, Sreekaryam will soon be flagged off. Interim service consultancy agreement has been signed between the Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on setting the groundwork for the Light Metro projects in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. As per the agreement, the state government has to provide the basic infrastructure like land acquisition in a period of nine months. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) principal advisor Mr. E Sreedharan has said that it would take five years for the works on Light Metro in Thiruvananthapuram and four years for Kozhikode Light Metro, once the government provides the basic infrastructure. The agreement is already signed between DMRC director business development S D Sharma and Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation managing

director Mr. Sheik Pareed in the presence of Hon. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. According to the agreement, DMRC will soon prepare a land acquisition survey and finalize estimations for proposed flyovers and will identify major utilizes. DMRC will also prepare utility shifting plans and road widening plans for the light metro projects. Mr. Sreedharan has mentioned that Land acquisition would be a major challenge in Trivandrum and that there will be four flyovers in the city. Flyovers will be required at Sreekariyam, Ulloor, Pattom and Thampanoor, while flyovers in Calicut will be restricted to one. The chief minister has said that he is confident of the capability of DMRC with Sreedaran directly involved in the projects. The state government will expedite the steps to be taken from its side for the project. He also mentioned that the DMRC should be able to complete Trivandrum and Calicut light metro projects on a time-bound basis.

Kerala Tourism campaigns wins big at Polish film Festival Kerala’s Responsible Tourism & The Great Backwaters campaigns get four awards at FilmAT festival

Further buttressing the state’s position as a prime destination for responsible tourism, Kerala Tourism has bagged a clutch of awards at FilmAT, one of the biggest international film festivals dedicated to tourism, art and ecology, in Poland. Its much-feted Responsible Tourism initiative won three gongs at the 11th edition of the festival held recently in the Polish city of Lublin, taking top honours for the ‘Best Promotional Social Campaign’ and in the ‘Protection of Nature’ and ‘Eco-Food’, categories for, respectively, the ‘New Worlds’ films Sowing the Seeds of the Future and A Taste of Life. A fourth award, for ‘Best Editing’, was conferred on Kerala Tourism for the film The Great Backwaters of Kerala, which showcased life in and around the legendary backwaters. “Winning four awards at such a prestigious festival is

a significant achievement for Kerala. It speaks to our commitment to realising the state’s potential for international tourism in a responsible manner – always with the best interests of the people and the environment at heart,” said Shri A.C. Moideen,

Honourable Minister for Tourism. “Since our campaigns are built upon an awareness of the uniqueness of ‘God’s Own Country’, they will undoubtedly have a positive impact and come in for more such recognitions,”

the minister added. Starring real people and site-authentic stories of tourists visiting local communities, sharing home-made meals, and watching and engaging in cultural performances, the ‘New Worlds’ films reflect the idea that when the world comes to Kerala, new horizons open up. “The films demonstrate the benefits of implementing Responsible Tourism initiatives, which have brought about a number of life-altering narratives that have now become the soul of the campaign,” said Principal Secretary (Tourism) Dr Venu V. IAS. “The campaign’s continuing success is an affirmation of both responsible tourism’s potential as a force of positive change and what it can do for the traveller, the local community, their traditions and culture, as also nature,” he added. The stories of truly transformative experiences for the traveller are married to tales of local aspiration and conservation that are as inspiring as they are authentic. “They are lessons for tourist destinations and

MANAGMENT

Managing Change What Effective Leaders Do? Managing change is the make or break for successful organizations and their leaders. A good leader can help to make change possible even in adverse situations!

Pavan Sriram

What happens when you want to make changes in your company? We start with the best of intentions and with innovative ideas, meetings, vision statements, data collection, and strategic plans and goals. Maybe we want to increase sales, improve or introduce new products and services, streamline work processes, enhance customer service, expand the business, and

so on. We are optimistic that positive results will follow. We would never implement change with the expectation that it will fail. After all, if we expected it to fail, then why bother? Yet, organizational change efforts often do fail. Why? To survive and thrive, every organization - from for-profit to non-profit to governmental - has to

know how to navigate change. But sadly, 75% of change initiatives fail, according to a recent study by McKinsey & Co. That means organizations inevitably suffer, and the leaders of those failed initiatives get hit with major setbacks. Change fails for a number of reasons. Sometimes the company’s culture simply doesn’t tolerate change. People aren’t

ready for it yet and they resist it. Maybe the change was ill-conceived, poorly thought-out, or even unnecessary. Perhaps needed resources weren’t available, or the timing just wasn’t right. But one of the biggest obstacles to change is the behaviour of leaders. Not only can leaders fail to manage change effectively, but their behaviours can make things even worse, resulting in a situation where it would have been better to do nothing! It’s easy for leaders to say that they need to improve and invest in doing things better (either because the marketplace is telling them to or because they need to be proactive before circumstances force their hand). The reality is that

without strategy, change is merely substitution – not evolution. Simply put, you can have an idea, but without the right strategy and execution of the idea, very little if any progress will be made. When leaders fall into this trap, they are being irresponsible and their credibility suffers, their intentions come into question, and doubt begins to loom about their capabilities and know-how Change management is in full-force across all industries and preparedness begins at the top and this means that leadership – across all levels – must have absolute clarity in purpose and focus; there also must be alignment in strategic philosophy and resolution

goals. At ITTIGE learning, where we have facilitated several change managment workshops for leaders- the following behaviours are perceived as successful in implementing change initiatives: Communicate frequently and enthusiastically – Successful leaders provide abundant, relevant, and truthful information about the change, and communicate how the change will personally affect employees. While it’s important to be realistic and not overly optimistic, ambivalent communication will produce resistance and weaken the leader’s credibility in building a case for why change is

needed. Motivate employees – Successful leaders establish an environment that is conducive to change and persuade employees to work toward common goals. Leaders who are skilled in creating an atmosphere of motivation during a change initiative “communicate effectively, address employees’ questions, generate creative ideas, prioritize ideas, direct personnel practices, plan employees’ actions, commit employees to action, and provide follow-up to overcome motivational problems.” Build teams – Successful leaders promote synergistic teamwork. Leaders clearly define roles

38

and expectations, but at the same time, value and welcome diversity of work styles, skills, and backgrounds. Act as coaches – Coaches build one-on-one relationships with the intent of improving employees’ ability to maximize their strengths and work cooperatively with others during and after the change initiative. A coach is a futureoriented agent of change. Mentoring, counselling, training, and providing feedback are coaching behaviors that can help in facilitating organizational change. It should be obvious that the leadership behaviors necessary for effective change are peopleoriented. Too often,

leaders simply mandate change and expect employees to fall in line and get it done, but do little or nothing to help them get there. Leaders who focus on people are likely to be the most successful in managing change in their companies I look forward to hear from you at pavan@ittige.com on how you are ensuring a positive experience during the organizational change and clearly setting the expectation that employees are expected to work collaboratively in teams.
