Foreword

Hi Readers India is home to a rich culture and legacy. It celebrates mixture and embraces multiplicity. Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has time and again highlighted on building “Brand India” with a special focus on Spiritual Tourism. Kerala, God’s Own Country, comes alive with festival of Gods during the Malayalam months of Kumbham, Meenam and Medam. Several world famous annual festivals happen in Kerala during this time. The various festivals have a charm of their own. Many of these have their own particular rituals. The legends behind these festivities are multifarious. Although, all of these state the triumph of good over evil. Several performances at this temple have been photographed, recorded in video and are hitting social media like wild fire. Anayottam at Guruvayur, Kettukazhcha, a splendid display of decorated wooden chariots, ritualistic Garudan Thookkam, Kaavu Theendal at Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, Thookkam and Paranettu at Vellanad – all these form this group. However, it is high time the governments realize the potential to take these festivals to the next level of popularity. This spiritual travels would ensure that our traditions continue. We need more and more people to learn and follow traditions. It is not just a marketing strategy that we are talking about, but also to remember and maintain our culture. Happy Reading!

Answering the Call of Devotees To establish virtue, save the good, and to show the light of righteousness - the Divine Mother Adhiparasakthi manifests herself in various names and forms. The land of Vellanad is blessed with the incarnation of Adhiparasakthi as Sree Bhagavathy. V. Viswanath 10 MARCH 2017

T

here are several legends about Vellanad Bhagavathy Temple. It is believed that to kill the Dharikasuran (evil king) who ruled the three worlds, the Divine Mother took this incarnation. The boon from Brahma to the demon Dharikan was such that he cannot be defeated by any man born in all the 14 worlds. Emboldened by this boon and becoming arrogant he conquered the whole world and even gods. God Shiva was requested by the

sage Narada to bring about an end to Dharikan. Kali brought forth by Lord Shiva opening his third eye was to kill Dharikan. The incarnation from the third eye of the Lord Paramashiva was named as Sree Kandakali. Once Dharikan was killed, the Devi reached Vellanad and took rest here. Hence, poojas were conducted for Sree Bhadrakali during the earlier years. When Brahmins conducted the poojas, Bhadrakali pooja was changed to Bhagavathy pooja. The character of the Devi is believed to have changed from Kali (denoting www.metromartdaily.com metromartnews.com

fierceness) to Bhagavathy (denoting gentleness) with the change in nature of poojas. Earlier, poojas were held only on Fridays and later also on Tuesdays. For the last several years, the poojas are conducted on a daily basis. There is a more widely accepted legend, which states the incarnation of Adhiparasakthi – Vellanattamma – after killing Dharikasuran, appeared in the dream of a landlord and instructed him that she was in a seashore village family at Thiruvallom. The Devi also informed him MARCH 2017 11

that if her idol is erected and consecrated in a temple at Vellanad, the place will be prosperous ever after. This is believed to have led to the construction of a temple in Vellanad and the Devi being worshipped. The annual 10-day festival finds several rituals being conducted in the temple. Some of the significant ones include Dhikku Bali, Kalam Kaval, Thookam, Urul, Pongala, Paranettu, Nilathil poru, Kuthiyottam, Thottum pattu, and Thalapoli. Kannagi Charitham or the epic of Kannagi is sung in hymns at Kappu Kettu and Thottam Pattu which marks the beginning of rituals. Invoking the slaying of the king of Madurai by Kannagi, the hymns are sung by dedicated singers. The festival is celebrated as a triumph of good over evil. The several stages of the epic is sung during the course of the festival. The ritual of Dhikku Bali denotes Goddess Kali searching for Dharika in 12 MARCH 2017

all four ‘dhikku’ or directions. The chief priest enacts or performs the search in Kalamkaval. The idol of the goddess is carried by him on his head and he dances or takes steps in a totally entranced way, culminating with his becoming unconscious. The Thiruvabharanam or traditional gold ornaments of the goddess is adorned by him during this performance. Thiruvabharanam consists of Kappu, vanki, odyanam, necklaces such as paalakka, pichi mottu, muthu, etc. According to belief, only with the blessings of the Devi enshrined in the temple, the priest can perform this. The devotees pay obeisance to the Goddess by offering Pongala at the temple premises. The number of devotees offering Pongala at this Shrine has increased over the years. Women conduct this ritual with unmatched devotion. They tend to be entranced in their prayers to Bhagavathy, which shows their devotion to Goddess www.metromartdaily.com metromartnews.com

Bhagavathy. It is believed that the fight between Goddess Kali and the demon Dharikan began in the sky. A 100-feet high stage is set up to enact this fight, which is held at night. This ritual is called Paranettu. The ensuing fight is on land which is termed Nilathilpporu. The culmination of the fight would see the demon asking for forgiveness and at the end of the seventh fight, depiction of the Goddess taking Dharikan’s head and visiting Lord Shiva takes place. The good is seen to be triumphing over this fight between good and evil. As a trial run before Thookkam is the Vandiyottam. The effective functioning of the cart and the bow used to carry men and children are ensured at this popular event. Urul is another major event during the 14 MARCH 2017

festival. After taking vows of penance and fasting for several days before the ceremony, the Urul or ‘rolling through the ground’ is carried out by devotees. Different folk art performances and musical bands such as Vadyamelam, Nagaswaram, etc., accompany the devotees who perform Urul. Long distances are rolled through by the Urul devotees to reach the temple premises and pay obeisance to the Goddess. Boys below the age of 13 years perform the offering of Kuthiyottam, representing the wounded soldiers of the Goddess Mahishasura Mardini. After receiving Prasadam from the temple priest, these boys start a seven-day penance, which would purify their mind and body. During their stay at the temple, they sleep on the floor and observe strict diet restrictions

and prostrate before the goddess 108 times every morning and evening. Young girls dressed in traditional attire offer Thalappoli to the goddess. Rice, owers and a lighted lamp is held on a Thaalam or plate. These young girls pray to the Goddess to bless them with inward and outward beauty and bless them with health, wealth and happiness. The Thookkam ritual is witnessed by thousands of devotees from far and wide. The belief is that the children who undergo this ritual would be blessed with fortune

and all illnesses will be cured. Fasting is observed for three days before this ritual by the men who carry the children in the bow and observe strict religious procedures. Ottam, Poomala, and Annadanam are some of the other rituals in this temple festival. Wholehearted prayers to the Devi would be answered with Peace and Prosperity. Devotees who follow a righteous path would surely be showered with blessings by Vellanad Sree Bhagavathy.

h! What a simple way to invite the most powerful and perhaps the most ferocious goddess Bhadrakali to the simple coconut leaves thatched temporary shed made in the temple premises in connection with the Thottampattu held at the traditional festivals during the Utharayana period. This speaks of the benign and benevolent nature of the Goddess. She needs no schooled Sanskrit verses or mantras to be pleased. She is at the beck and call of every Bhakta or devotee irrespective of their caste, creed, status or education. All are equal to Amma. Or how else, she could be tied to a place with the simple rendering of her saga in the rustic vernacular.

Tradition

Thottampattu ,also known as Bhadrakalipattu is a ballad song sung in connection with the festival of temples were the prime deity is Bhadrakali or Bhagavathi. Along with the commencement of the festival the ‘Kodungaloor Bhagavathi’ who embarks on a journey from Kodungaloor temple by the fag end of Makara month is invoked and placed in the thatched shed. The ceremony begins with the installation ritual known as kappu Ketti Kudiyiruthu. It is also known in some parts as Arayirutthu as the installation and consecration of Bhagavathi is temporary. The ceremony is a pact between the Bhagavathi and the Asan or the guru who performs the Thottampattu that both of them will not leave the premises till the culmination of the rituals. After the ceremonial lamp is lit before the offering of padukka consisting of betel leaves ,aval ,pori and banana, three persons with the Guru sitting at the right end and his main shishyan(student) at the centre and a fresher at the left side, sing the saga of kannaki –the heroine of Shilapathikaram composed by ilangovatikal who is none other than Devi herself. Thottampattu rendering can be divided into two parts; the first part consists of fight between Bhadrakali and Darukan the demon and the second part is the saga of

20 MARCH 2017

Kannaki and Kovalan. In some temples it is sung for ten days and in some for seven days depending on the number of days the festival is held. Thottampattu begins with the description of Darikapuram-the abode of Darukan.. After getting the boon from Lord Shiva that no man should ever kill him, Darikan became all the more powerful and went on a killing spree. The atrocities of Darukan reach the zenith that lord Brahma and lord Vishnu seek the help of Lord Shiva to put an end to it. Bhadrakali, born out of Shiva’s third eye ventures out in search of Darukan and kills him. Thereafter,Lord shiva makes the fierce Bhadrakali a small child and give her to a Narayanan from thekkan Kollam who had no children. Same time another Marayar and his wife from Vadakkan kollam also pleads to lord Shiva for a child. A boy named palakan or Kovalan was born to them. These two children kani and palakan grew up and they get married to each other. The marriage of Kannaki(Devi)at the age of seven is the famed Maalappuram. inThottampattu. The ornaments of Kannaki are brought in a procession. After sometime Kannaki gave her Chilambu or anklets to Kovalan to sell it and do some business. In madurai ,Kovalan was cheated by a goldsmith and was killed by King Pandian accusing him of robbing the queen’s anklet. Devi saw everything in a dream and goes to Madurai and brings kovalan back to life. That day’s thottampattu is called konnuthottu pattu and it reflects the sorrow of Devi. After that the murderous looking Devi set aflame the city of Madurai. Later she goes to Kailas and ask Mahadev to accomodate her somewhere. Legend says that she came to Kodungalloor along with kovalan and settled there. The saga of kannaki and Kovalan ends in a befitting manner so also the ThottamPattu and Kodungalooramma, leaves to kodungaloor after blessing her children.

Modern Auto World BMW

Here’s the German giant that’s all about performance. Nothing can get in the way of a “Bimmer” when it comes to sportness, as their engines are perhaps the best out there, in terms of power. The company has successfully completed a century of existence and turned 101 this March. Normally during the centenary celebration of every brand, a special model is created to look back upon their historic creations, as homage; but BMW looked at this as a glimpse into the future and gave birth to the BMW,

34 MARCH 2017

NEXT100 model that looks like something straight out of the future. This car is BMW’s way of saying that they are already ahead, not only in terms of design, but also technology that can blow ones mind. BMW is also known for their futuristic designs before it’s time. It was founded by Karl Rapp, Franz Josef Popp and Camillo Castiglioni. The iconic BMW logo shows the propellers of an aircraft, depicted in blue, cutting through the sky, depicted in white. This shows the early history of the brand, a time when they used to make fighter jet engines.

Now, an interesting question. What does the name BMW stand for? Every layman knows the brand as BMW, but without knowing the full form. The name expands quite simply to form the name Bavarian Motor Work, (Bayerische Motoren Werke in German). After 101, years the company remains crowned the ultimate driving machine and still holds up the title without any compromises. Luxury is top notch in any standard edition Bimmer, and driving one would simply give you chills. Oh, Mini Cooper and Rolls Royce Motor Cars, are owned by BMW.

Audi

The four-rings seems to be doing just fine and is having successful years lately. Sales are going up and so are the prices, but the engine power has been made significantly lesser in India for delivering more mileage per litre as we Indians spend a lot on fuel, but the power delivery is considerably high and so, hey, no ones complaining. Each ring of the logo represents the companies that joined to form Auto Union that was later renamed Audi. Audi is pronounced “Ow-Dee’’ commonly mispronounced “Aw-Dee”. The company

even made a video to teach people how to pronounce their name properly. Today Audi is owned by the noble Volks-Wagen, and its sister companies are Porsche, Bentley, Škoda, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Seat, MAN and Scania. Yes Volks-Wagen owns all these companies.

Who buys an Audi? Normally people who are new to the luxury segment, go for an Audi. The brand shows off all the needs of a potent buyer, specifically safety, comfort, design and performance or in other words a Volvo, MercedesBenz, Lexus and BMW, all in one car. Catchy? This was used in a commercial by Audi to promote the brand and create loyalty. Audi is now 107 years old and has been in the business for sometime now. All we can say is that, it has established itself quite well in this time. Which one’s going to be in your garage?

Navati celebrations of

P. Parameswarji As part of the lead-up to the 90th birth anniversary (Navati) of iconic Hindutva renaissance ideologue P. Parameswaran in October, Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram will hold a twoday celebration in Kochi from April 1-2.

A

thinker, philosopher and reformer, Parameswarji, as he is affectionately called, has been a vocal promoter of both Indian nationhood and Hinduism for the past several decades. Born into a devout Hindu family in Cherthala in 1927, religion came early and naturally to Parameswarji. As a child, he would join his father, a priest in the village temple, in reciting mantras and hymns. A brilliant student all through school, he completed his intermediate course from SB College, Changanassery. He graduated from Kerala University with a Bachelor’s degree in History (Honours), becoming the first-rank holder in the process. 40 MARCH 2017

Parameswarji dedicated himself as a fulltime pracharak in the Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh. Later, he worked in many organisations associated with the RSS before founding Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram, a charitable society that championed the cause of national reconstruction through rigorous research, in 1982. Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram is headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram. It is a haven for thinkers and researchers who believe India’s future is inextricably linked to its cultural and spiritual roots. By fostering publications and organising camps, debates, symposia and classes over the years, the Kendram has become a place where like-minded intelligentsia could gather and nurture ideas. He was always happy to meet, exchange ideas and debate with eminent persons like Sri E.M.S. Namboothiripad and Sri P. Govinda Pillai. He was the General Secretary and National Vice President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh and former Director of Deendayal Research Institute, New Delhi. The celebrations committee, under the chairmanship of Justice K.T. Thomas, will see 1,001 personalities of national and international importance from various walks of life. This includes legendary poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, noted scholar Dr D. Babu Paul, celebrated scientist Dr G. Madhavan Nair, eminent historian Dr MGS Narayanan, Rajya Sabha MP Sri Veerendra Kumar and respected Ayurveda physician Dr P.K. Warrier. Conventions of academics, women and youth, Bhagawat Gita seminar are on the design as part of the event. The celebrations will last till October 2017.

A

moment of pride for Kerala and Tiruvananthapuram as the city earned the tag of being the best in the terms of urban governance and quality of living. The research carried out by a Bengaluru based organization named Janagraha, which serves as an annual inspector that build and add to the Urban Governance on various parameters.

The Annual Survey of India’s CitySystems (ASICS) has conducted the study on 83 government parameters and 11 basic questions that include the cities laws, policies and enforcement of the same, finance , taxation , political participation of citizens etc. The basic questions were modelled on The capacity and resources of the city, the urban planning , political representation, transparency and accountability. www.metromartdaily.com metromartnews.com

The survey was carried out in 21 cities across 18 states of India. The cities were judged on the various parameters and were to be marked out of 10. Tiruvananthapuram achieved a score of 4.4 followed by Pune at 4.1 and Kolkata at 4.1 The four basic aspects of the on which Janagraha judge the city system framework are Urban Planning and Designing, Urban Capacities and Resources ,Empowered and Legitimate Political Representation MARCH 2017 45

and Transparency, Accountability and Participation. The city scored a little over 2.4 and 2.6 in Urban Planning and designing and in Urban capacities and resources, however it managed to regain its position in Empowered and Legitimate Political Representation and Transparency, Accountability and Participation by scoring a 6.2 and 6.4 respectively. The city managed to beat the national and financial capital of the country for the second consecutive year. The other southern cities like and Hyderabad, Chennai performed fairly in the survey with scoring 3.6, Bengaluru however dropped over 4 points to rank 16. While cities like Jaipur and Chandigarh were ranked 21 with a score of 2 and Jaipur on rank 20 with 2.8. The biggest gainer in the list was Bhubaneshwar which jumped 8 spots to be 10th on the list.

46 MARCH 2017

However ASICS claims that Indian cities perform poorly and score between 2.1 and 4.4 against global cities like New York and London which score 9.8 and 9.3. This is a matter for concern considering that India is now advancing towards urbanisation and has yet makes a rather slow growth over this Index. This indicates that Indian cities still have a long way to go in the matter of strengthening the city systems that include quality of life, policy enforcement, state of public institution that delivers public service and governance.
