ollam (Quilon) an emporium of international trade in the Old World, a land extolled by Marco Polo and IbnBatuta, Quilonis much more than just a land. A destination whose sands are sodden with adventures and legacies waiting to be explored, Kollam has had a strong history of commerce since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Rich with tales of a bygone era of the Dutch, Portuguese and British, Kollam is today the heart of the country’s cashew trading and processing industry and the Ashtamudi Lake here is the gateway to the magnificent backwaters of Kerala. To the north of Thiruvananthapuram comes the district

A boat cruise starting from the Ashtamudi backwaters in Kollam to backwater networks in the adjoining district of Alappuzha and further is a delightful experience. and business culture. It is now known as the “Cashew Capital of the World”. Since the ancient times, city of Kollam (Quilon) has played a vital role in the business, economic, cultural, religious and political history of Asia and Indian subcontinent. Even the Malayalam calendar (Kollavarsham) is also known so with the name of the city Kollam. City of Quilon is mentioned in historical citations dating back to Biblical times and the reign of King Solomon, connecting with Red Sea ports of the Arabian Sea (supported by a find of ancient Roman coins). The teak wood used in building King Solomon’s throne was taken from Kollam. Desinganadu, old name of Kollam, had a sustained commercial reputation from the days of the Phoenicians, Chinese, Arabs, Dutch and the Romans. Kollam was a major trading center

for spices and coir products. It is closely related with the ancient and modern life of Keralites through Kollavarsham, Tharisapalli plates, arrival of Christianity in Kerala etc. Kollam is also known for Lakes, Beaches, Backwaters, Villages, Hill stations, Waterfalls, Ecotourism Zones, Dams, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Sea Ports, Fishing Ports, and Art Forms etc

The lighthouse built at Quilon by the British in the year 1902 is visible as far as 13 miles in the sea. The lighthouse stands to an amazing height of 144 feet. nce known as Desinganadu, Kollam had a vital role since ancient times in the economical and cultural history of Asia. Kollam is said to have flourished as a centre of commerce trading with Arabs, Chinese, Dutch, Phoenicians, and Romans. Once famous for its trade in fine quality Pepper, the word Kollam is believed to be derived from Sanskrit. The Kollamites can be proud that it was in Kollam that the Malayalam Calendar or the Kollavarsham was decided upon and decreed as a new era. Even though there are several theories as to the reason for starting a new era, the place where it began is confirmed by many as Kollam in 825 A.D. Documentations have shown Kollam as one of the two revenue administrative units of Travancore State in 1835 A.D. Even when the States of Travancore and Cochin were integrated, Kollam was one of the three revenue divisions. As the State of Kerala was formed, Kollam became one of the first districts. Excellent connectivity by Roads and Railways is available to other parts of the country from Kollam. The richness of Kollam is multifold. The two rivers of Ithikkara and Kallada flow

through the district providing perennial source for water. Sasthamcottah Lake in Kollam is a major freshwater lake. The presence of more than 37 kms of coastline gives an advantage to the district in terms of maritime sector. The beach sands have concentrations of heavy minerals. Bauxite deposits in Adichanallur, China clay deposits in Chathannoor, Kundara and Mulavana, and Lime shell deposits in Ashtamudi Lake are mineral resources in the district. Kollam has large areas of forest, predominantly in the Punalur and Thenmala divisions. Kollam has a number of pilgrimage centres such as Oachira, Kottarakkara Mahaganapathy Temple, Kottamkulangara Temple, Infant Jesus Cathedral at Thangassery, Saint Casimir Church in Kadavoor, Jonakappuram Valiya Palli and Karbala Maidan with the adjacent Makani mosque. There are several more important centres of worship across the district, which see thousands of worshippers visiting. The vibrant culture of Kollam comes alive during the festivities such as Oachira Kali, Kadakkal Thiruvathira, Kollam Pooram, Thrikkadavur Thiruvathira, etc. Ashtamudi

Lake is the venue to be on November 1st – Kerala Piravi Day – to witness the President’s Trophy Boat Race. The enchanting greenery and the fast-paced rhythm of the Vanchippattu would fill the spectators with pomp and pride of Kerala. Kallada river is the venue for Jalotsavam conducted after Onam celebrations. The first form of Kathakali – Ramanattam – originated in Kottarakkara initiated by Veera Kerala Varma. Right from the medieval ages, Kollam has seen visitors from far off lands. If it was for trade and commerce of spices and other natural resources from Kollam during the early period, later on the richness of culture and diverse topography made visitors visit Kollam to experience the grandness of nature. India’s first eco-tourism centre is at Thenmala. Literally meaning ‘honey mountain’, the place has a host of attractions that would be entertaining as well as rejuvenating one and all. Palaruvi

The enchanting greenery and the fast-paced rhythm of the Vanchippattu would fill the spectators with pomp and pride of Kerala. Falls, Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary, Ashtamudi Backwaters, etc. delight the visitors. Museums, Parks, Colonial relics, et al adds to the charm of Kollam. Coastal belt on the west, dominant hills and forest in the east, two rivers running through the district and a fresh water lake – add to this the fairs and festivals conducted – Kollam has gained a prominent place in the tourism map of Kerala.

Sustainable

Tourism

A Deliberation

Sustainable Tourism addresses the social, economic and environmental effects at the present time as well as in the future.

T

ourism being one of the world’s top economic sectors, has beneficiaries ranging from normal households to leading business organizations. The reach of tourism and its mechanisms has its effects on a broad social, cultural and environmental spectrum. Meaning any positive or negative effect caused by tourism would have a far outreach and not just limited to the stakeholders immediately associated with the tourism activities. Further, increased footfalls and modification activities to accommodate this increase at a tourist destination might lead to gradual change of the natural elements in that area, which in turn could lead to the destination losing its significance. Sustainable Tourism gains importance in this context. Sustainable Tourism addresses the social, economic and environmental effects at the present time as well as in the future. It looks in to the requirements of tourists as well as residents of the tourist destinations. It promotes long-term economic goals

38 October 2017

while retaining the pristine values of the tourist destination and also ensuring that benefits from tourism activities is optimally received by all participants. For developing countries, Sustainable Tourism gains more significance, as a well-balanced tourism promotion would lead to increased trading and higher employment opportunities. Each year World Tourism Day is commemorated on September 27th. UNWTO – the World Tourism Organization has declared 2017 as ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.’ On this year’s World Tourism Day celebrations and focus was on how sustainable tourism can contribute to development. UNWTO says, ‘This year provides a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and move forward to ensure the positive impact of well-managed tourism on inclusive and equitable growth, sustainable development and peace.’ The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. In his message, Mr. Yusuff Ali said, “I appeal that everyone should help, support and promote this international event that is happening in our state and bringing so many visitors and accolades for Kerala and for our country. “When the Ruler of Sharjah first landed in Kerala, the desire of His Highness was to meet the organizers of the KochiMuziris Biennale which is attracting great attention from all over the world. Before leaving Kerala, His Highness made it a point to meet Mr. Bose Krishnamachari, the President of KBF. On different occasions, while attending international events, I have personally heard people speak very high of our Biennale. The KBF has truly succeeded in giving our present and future generations an international event to be extremely proud of. Personally and on behalf of our Group, I assure my continued support to this great event happening in my Kerala state”.

Lauding the contribution of the Lulu Group, Mr. Krishnamachari said, “We are extremely thankful to Mr. Yusuff Ali for reaffirming his faith in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. It is a salutary example of industry patronizing an art event that has made India proud in the cultural firmament,”. It would definitely give an impetus to the sustainability of India’s only Biennale that has garnered acclaim from art connoisseurs and commoners alike, he said, adding: “It is also a testament to the KBF’s expertise to hold a front-ranking contemporary art exhibition that has brought huge social and economic benefits for the state.” he added. Mr. Komu, who co-founded the KBF with Mr. Krishnamachari and also co-curated the first edition of the Biennale with him, said financial support from the government, industry and people is a prerequisite for holding an event of the magnitude of a Biennale. “The KBF tremendously appreciates the gesture of Mr. Yusuff Ali, who has emerged as a stellar figure for promoting and patronizing art and culture. Such a gesture underscores his faith and confidence in the robustness of the Biennale and its emergence as a durable art event of great import,” he noted. “It is a productive bonding between art and commerce.” Earlier in March this year, the Kerala government announced that it would sanction a working fund of Rs two crore for the upcoming Biennale and also allocate five acres of land to set up a permanent venue for the KMB in recognition of its impact in popularising art. Anita Dube, a contemporary artist, is to curate the fourth edition of the KMB, which begins in December 2018. She takes over from Sudarshan Shetty, who during his stint as curator of the Biennale’s third edition, got 97 artists from 31 countries to showcase their works.

Auto World

H

ey there! Welcome to this months issue of Auto World where you enter a fascinating world of automobiles. The American automobile manufacturer started off way back in 1941 and is 76 years old now. The company had gained popularity because of it’s bulky but effective off-road cars and SUVs that cannot be compared to any other. The car maker focused only on the skill of mountain climbing and taking on harsh terrains and these cars are undoubtedly the best at what they do. Today, Jeep is a division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio.

52 October 2017

Jeep entered the Indian shores recently and has a well focused product rage of solely SUVs. The lineup tops off with the Grand Cherokee being the most luxurious; but of course this luxury comes at a price. The Grand Cherokee stars at a whopping 97 lakhs for the summit and goes all the way up to 1.15 crores for the SRT. The next is the Wrangler starting at 57 lakhs. The Wrangler is easily the best off-roading car and can take on any type of terrain. Lastly there is the Jeep Compass that was launched less than a month ago. Jeep has priced the Compass at an introductory price of 16 lakhs. The price is expected

to go up very soon as units are selling extremely well. The Compass is an able offroader and offers a good deal of comfort as well.

Jeep Grand Cherokee This jumbo SUV offers something extraordinary, which some may call the best of both worlds. It is off-road ready and daring to take on any terrain; while at the same time, the Grand Cherokee offers a great amount of luxury with plush interiors and a very supple ride quality. The SRT on the other hand is a totally different ball game altogether. Powered by a 6.4 litre V8 engine, it produces a roaring 475 horses. Other SUVs in its league are the Volvo XC90 Polestar, BMW X5M and the Mercedes Benz GLS 63 AMG.The Summit trim of the Grand Cherokee is powered by a V6 motor that churns out a punchy 300 horsepower which is more than enough for our road conditions. Coming to the inside of the Grand Cherokee one is welcomed by an award winning infotainment system and materials used are top notch, upscale and extremely plush. Passengers will find it rather roomy and the huge cabin space adds to the feeling. The Grand Cherokee is a great all rounder with great off-roading abilities as well as a luxurious interior. It’s perfect for Indian roads and it is the car for you if you take off-roading quite seriously.

Jeep Wrangler If you want an all terrain gas guzzling top of the line sports utility vehicle that has a go anywhere ability and all that with amazing stance and style, the Wrangler is the car for you. the Wrangler is not subtle. This beautiful piece of American craftsmanship is unique in every which way. While bold and bulky on the outside, it comes with futuristic technology inside. Off-roading aids come standard. Luxury is not a pint of focus in the Wrangler. That said, the air condition is top notch and will not fail to keep you cool on a hot summer day. Expensive yet practical, this is Jeep’s best seller and steals the show anywhere. The Wrangler is a car that just doesn’t age. This is for you if the adventurer inside you is calling out.

Jeep Compass Here’s Jeep’s answer for the Indian market. An affordable but capable SUV with a

decent size and breathtaking looks. The Compass is a true Jeep in any possible way. The butch design styling has been adopted straight from the Grand Cherokee and the off-roading ability comes from the Wrangler. The Compass is all you ever need for our roads. Be it the spacious and plush interiors or the fancy touch screen system, the Compass is a total deal breaker. Jeep has got it just right by pricing the Compass very thoughtfully. The Compass can be called a mini Grand Cherokee. It offers everything you’d want, making this one worth every penny. Jeep. There’s only one.

of activities across all elements of the value chain – fibre production, spinning of yarn, weaving of mats and mattings and diversification of production into non-woven products. It involves a fresh approach to existing and new markets for the conventional use of coir and also new industrial and commercial application. But it is also necessary to play the balancing act between the old and the new: Mechanization without impacting livelihoods of the traditional workers, diversification without losing the extensive variety of Kerala’s coir product legacy and a transition into the future without rejecting the historic fabric. The employment and income of the coir workers who cannot be accommodated in the modern sector would be protected through promotion of workers co-operatives, a system of procurement, guaranteeing minimum wages and a nationwide sales network which would if necessary be subsidised.

Kerala is the land of traditional industries. The industrialisation in Kerala started with coir, cashew, handloom, tiles, bamboo, beedi and such other sectors. The 13th Five Year Plan for the coir sector has been built on careful analysis and planning. It reflects the alternative perspective that has evolved through debates and struggles of the trade unions and also opinions of other stake holders including the employers during the last one decade.

Self-reliance in the coconut fibre production is necessary for the restoration of the Coir industry. The educated young generation is not inclined to employment in the traditional sectors. Their dream is of well-paying jobs commensurate with their qualifications and, this is a fair demand too. We should upgrade our traditional sectors to provide jobs that suit their expectations. Products must be diversified and necessary machinery and automation need to be brought in. Productivity must not only increase but we also need to reduce the drudgery of physical labour in the traditional sector. Such a modernization program will not only make Kerala 66 October 2017

competitive but will also help to attract and retain the youth in the traditional sectors. (Give Chief Minister PICTURE in the middle of the article) At the same time, the Government has the responsibility of protecting the poor and the older generation who are still employed in the traditional sectors. For this we need to practically examine the situation in each industry and shape action plans. The scheme of the government in procuring handloom products and distributing them to the schools as uniform material is an example of this. The objective of this scheme is to provide

The Coir products of traditional sector will be procured at a price which would guarantee minimum wages and also two hundred days of employment. at least 200 days of work for the existing handloom weavers. A separate company has been formed for purchasing cashew directly from African countries in order to ensure minimum days of employment in the Kerala cashew industry. The Income Support Scheme by which the government contributes to the minimum wage payment in selected traditional industries, started during the last LDF government, continues to be implemented. All Welfare Fund Board members have a pension of Rs. 1,100 per month along with retirement benefits. The workers in the traditional sectors will also benefit from free healthcare (including treatment for lifestyle diseases) and assurance of high quality education facilities in public schools. A comprehensive program built on the above vision has been formulated for the Coir industry. This program was born and shaped during the agitations carried out by the Coir trade unions in the recent decades and declared in the Election Manifesto of the Left and Democratic Front. Rs. 1300 crores is the outlay of this Coir Industry Reorganization Scheme. Most of this money will be spent for the mechanisation and product diversification along the three stages of coir production viz., Coir fibre production, Coir spinning and Coir product manufacturing. The second most important intervention is related to marketing and setting up of retail network for Coir products. The Coir products of traditional sector will be procured at a price which would guarantee minimum wages and also two hundred days of 68 October 2017

employment. Besides around Rs. 500 crores will be spent on welfare activities like pension which is not included in the plan outlay. This Coir Industry Reorganization Scheme is the Left Government’s alternative to the present morass in to which the traditional industries in India are drifting. India’s largest traditional industry is handloom. Regrettably as in the agriculture sector, the suicide rate among the handloom workers is increasing. This is mainly because the central government has ceased to protect the handloom sector. In the new GST system, the tax rebate for handloom workers has been abolished. In sharp contrast, a modernisation scheme is developed for the Coir industry in Kerala that protects those who are working in the traditional sectors yet provides for the transformation of the sector to improve productivity and competitiveness. Self-reliance in the coconut fibre production is necessary for the restoration of the Coir industry. An innovative program has been developed with this objective. Crux of it is that of establishing mechanised units for fibre production in the coconut producing areas and a program that uses Information Technology for procuring coconut husk with the participation of women and farmer groups. We cannot solve the problem of shortage of coconut husks without improving coconut farming. So, let us hope that the implementation of the Coir Reorganisation Scheme will also prove a boon to the coconut farmers too.

THE FAMILY TREE Adorable Munia family quietly perched side by side on the bare branch of a lemon tree ,basking in the last light of the day before returning to their cosy nest . It is a comical yet fascinating sight watching the fledglings follow the parent bird ( 3 rd one of the left with the colourful plumage ) clumsily into the nest trying hard to find the tiny entrance , so structured to withhold the strong winds and rain since they breed during the rainy season. They keep making soft whistling noises until the whole brood has settled down comfortably inside the nest . As each day passes they build up stronger muscles and feathers , venturing out a little farther everyday, gaining more knowledge about the territory and developing skills needed for survival, until finally they leave the nest to find their own independent space elsewhere.
