Onam is celebrated across the world by the Malayali community. Two things that Keralites all over the world can and do to celebrate Onam are – wearing traditional clothes like Mundu and Neryathu and feasting with OnaSadya. V Viswanath
A
traditional, agricultural festival of yesteryears – Onam – has now acquired a grand scale incorporating all sections of society. The harvest festival brings joy and enthusiasm to Keralites. According to legends, Onam is meant to welcome the erstwhile King Mahabali whose reign was considered as the Golden era. Over the years, the festival has seen remarkable shift in celebrations. While the 10-day Pookkalam or flower carpet – with one circle on the first day to all 10 circular rings filled with flowers on the 10th day – was a must for the early Keralite homes, the number of homes having this
for all 10 days has reduced rapidly. This could be attributed to the lack of space, unavailability of flowers, time, resource, etc. However, Pookkalam tops on the list for institutions celebrating Onam. They conduct competitions for the best Pookkalam and in some organizations they lay the Pookkalam for at least a day. It should be noted that residential associations, clubs, etc. are now playing the role of large families. They get together, lay the Pookkalam on all days according to the custom, have OnaSadya, make merry and celebrate the festival in a grand manner. Religious symbols and rituals do not have a place in this festival. Thus the festival connects people, builds relationships, and promotes harmony. Onam is celebrated across the world by the Malayali community. Two things that Keralites all over the world can and do to celebrate Onam are – wearing traditional clothes like Mundu and Neryathu and feasting with OnaSadya. Since Mundu has mostly been replaced with Pants and Trousers owing to convenience, it is only during festivals like this, Mundu makes a comeback. Almost same is the case with Neryathu Sarees. OnaSadya on Thiruvonam day is a grand feast served in banana leaves with traditional delicacies typical of Kerala. OnaSadya comprises of a definite number of courses and dishes and a distinct order of serving. The dishes of Kalan and

Olan, a variety of Prathamans, etc., make OnaSadya extremely tempting. Of course, urbanization and modernization has led to slight changes in OnaSadya too. In Kerala, several programs mark the occasion. OnaVillu – a ceremonial bow made out of wood with miniature paintings – is offered at the temple of Sree Padmanabhaswamy in Thiruvananthapuram. In Guruvayur, Kazhchakkula Samarpanam or offering of plantains to the deity is held. Chengalikodan is the chosen banana variant for this function – and because of this, the variant has received a Geographical Indication (GI) registration. Onam attractions include dances like Kummatti Kali – a mask dance, Puli Kali – a performance involving artists painted as tigers, and Thumbi Thullal – song and dance by women. Ambeyyal – a game of 14 September 2017

Talappanthukali – a ball game, Kayyankali and Attakalam – combat games, and Tug of War are outdoor games and testing physical endurance.

Athachamayam in Tripunithura on Atham day in the Malayalam month of Chingam marks the beginning of Onam festival. Various folk art forms, pageantry, etc. are held during the event. Thousands gather on the banks of river Pamba in Aranmula to watch the Vallam Kali or the Snake boat race. Vanchipattu is sung during the boat race. In Thrikkakara, the ritual of Para Nirakkal – filling fresh paddy in measuring vessel – is held to symbolize fertility and prosperity. In Thiruvananthapuram – Kerala’s capital city – a variety of cultural programs and colorful pageantry is conducted by the Tourism department.

Outings, events, exhibitions, fairs, processions, feast, new dresses – et al form part of Onam. Foreign and domestic tourists flock to Kerala to take part in the festivities. In turn, all this becomes good for businesses too. Business establishments provide discount sales and offers during the Onam season enabling the people to celebrate in a grand manner. Be it shops, restaurants, or other service providers – everyone makes sure they have something special for Onam. Because it is not just business, it is the time to get together and rejoice. Compositions and dimensions might have been improvised – it still retains the core, i.e. celebrating prosperity and harmony. Let’s celebrate Onam in all its grandeur!

Sadya The traditional vegetarian feast of Kerala
S
adya is the traditional vegetarian feast of Kerala. Usually served as lunch, it consists of par boiled pink rice, side dishes, savouries, pickles and desserts spread out on a plantain leaf. Tradition insists that the tapering end of the leaf points to the left of the seated guest. Rice is served on the lower half of the leaf. The feast begins with the serving of Parippu, a liquid curry made of small gram and ghee. The second course is Sambar, the famous South Indian vegetable stew in which any available combination of vegetables is boiled in a gravy of crushed lentils, onions, chillies, coriander and turmeric and with a pinch of asafoetida. Avial, an unavoidable side dish is a blend

Some of the other important side dishes include Thoran, and Olan. Thoran can be minced string beans, cabbage, radish or grams, mixed with grated coconut and sautèed with a dash of red chillies and turmeric powder. Olan is a bland dish of pumpkin and red grams cooked in thin gravy of coconut milk. The savouries include Upperi, Pappadam, Ginger pickle, Pachadi and Kichadi. Upperi is deep fried banana chips. Pappadams are fried creamy yellow, sun-dried wafer of black gram flour. The Ginger pickle is a rich brown, hot and sweet ginger chutney while the Kichadi consists of sliced and sautèed cucumber or ladies finger in curd, seasoned with mustard, red chillies and curry leaves in coconut oil. Pickles are usually mango and lime.
20 September 2017
Desserts are served mid-way through the meal. The Payasam is a thick fluid dish of sweet brown molasses, coconut milk and spices, garnished with cashew nuts and raisins. There could be a succession of Payasams, such as the Palada Pradhaman and Parippu Pradhaman. Pazham, a ripe golden yellow plantain, is usually had along with the payasams. After the payasams, rice is served once more with the spicy Rasam. Rasam is a mixture of chilly and peppercorn powders boiled in diluted tamarind juice. Kaalan, seasoned buttermilk with turmeric powder and green chillies, and plain sour buttermilk that comes salted and with chopped green chillies and ginger, are also served before the feast is finally wound up.

ssistant Vice President - Dakshin Routes & Le Passage to India Journeys KTM being a Mart focusing on a single destination is already well known world wide and a great reputation is attached to it. It has certainly helped in positioning Kerala at an advantageous position through the dedicated and selfless approach of the leaders. Right from its inception, the members hailing from different back grounds have come together and worked with one objective of promoting Kerala to the world audience and I must say that this is something very unique to Kerala. The hopes and aspirations, both internal and external is very high on the newly selected team and no stone will be left unturned when it comes to the deliverance. Coming to my plans and vision for KTM for the period 2017-19, the list is quite elaborate but the key ones are listed below and I expect to have the same achieved with sheer teamwork and dedicated effort from one and all. 1. I nternational Buyers- As always the potential and productivity of the buyers would be the prime criteria, giving more importance to new and emerging markets same time giving due importance to existing traditional source markets. There would be proper research on this front and the quality would be the key parameter. 2. S howcasing the Real Unseen kerala Experiences- Holidays have given way to Real experiences and KTM can play a large role in showcasing them. 3. S preading the wings of KTM – Rather than limiting to one Mart once in every two years KTM could also look at moving to 24 September 2017
Mr. Hari Kumar Joint Secretary- KTM other source markets outside India thus enhancing the visibility of the destination. 4. CSR Activities – KTM has already introduced the CSR - CHARTER (AGENDA - 9) and the efforts needs to be constantly nurtured and spread all across kerala. 5. Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Practices – Still lot of potential left and all opportunities to be tapped with constant efforts. 6. Support the Small – Support to be given to small scale entrepreneurs eg homestays, experiential tour providers, offering classy experiences who should be handheld and brought up to reach to a larger audience. 7. Maintain Green Protocol for KTM 2018 –To stick to a Green Protocol , cutting down usage of Plast ics, energy wastage and eco-friendly practices for KTM 2018. 8. Travel Bloggers and Social media influencers – Along with FTOs and Media there should be a right mix of Travel bloggers and Social media influencers who should be invited for KTM 2018 9. Taking the Technology path – must keep eyes open to technology advancements and there should be efforts to place KTM on the Technology Track making sure we don’t miss the bus. 10. PR and Newletter –Strengthening the PR activities including Periodic Newsletter and updates through Mobile Apps which keeps the interest alive and also helps in building enthusiasm.

his is the American heavy duty SUV manufacturer’s latest offering and it has finally hit Indian shores. In fact, this car is focused particularly on the Indian market. So much so that it's even produced here and exported overseas. This new SUV from Jeep's stable is rather unique. It's very strong, very tough, very efficient and very well designed; some things that are hardly found together. This Jeep is no mild one. Like all other Jeeps, this bold new SUV drives over it's competition like a joke. Is the Compass a show stopper and an answer to all of Jeep's problems in India? Continue reading and find out for yourself. The Compass has been raising millions of eyebrows after its recent Indian launch at a blinding price of 15 lakhs ex-showroom for the base. A Jeep for this price? No way! This is what all of us had arrived at. The American luxury brand launching a car at this price was not possible. It was too good to even be the least true. Now that the car has arrived and we've seen it for ourselves, we can digest the information. This is one great car at an even greater price. The build quality is top notch and this price hasn't affected anything in anyway. It destroys the competition when it comes to comfort and

The materials are soft to touch and everything is plush. The centre console houses a 7 inch touch screen display with good connectivity options for both Android and Apple users. The interface is quite simple to use and has Bluetooth connectivity. The gear knob is finished in metal and feels good to hold and offers a great grip. The seats are undoubtedly first in class for the “Limited” variant finished in “Snow-White” upholstery. Coming to the exterior of the car, the most remarkable feature is the iconic Jeep 7 slot grille giving it it's unique DNA. The “Limited Option” variant comes with a bi-colour

paint job which sports a glossy black roof and contrasting main paint. The wheel arches are square and the rear wheels are not positioned right in the middle, making it a tad too odd to look at. The bumpers are very similar to the Grand Cherokee which is of course a great thing. There are efficient fog lamps as well. The car is rather tall making it sometimes difficult to enter. The ground clearance is pretty great making it perfect for our roads. Overall butch looks with great gear is what this car is all about. The build quality is rock solid and is ready

The range starts with a 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 2 litre Diesel engine.
The Jeep Compass comes in 2 engines. The 1.4 litre MultiAir Petrol engine and the 2.0 litre Diesel engine.

It has the best off-roading tech that you'd ever need and it's equipped quite well. Filled to the brim with features and futuristic technology, this cars all you'd ever need in your stable. BUT WHY? The question that has captured us all. Why has Jeep priced the Compass at such a low price. The Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler imported as CBUs were not priced
competitively for the Indian market. Jeep needed a game changer. The answer was the Compass. It has penetrated the Indian market and over 8100 bookings have been made already in such a short while. The Compass has made people who would otherwise never even have walked into the jeep showroom, flood the place. This affordable Jeep has a catch. Next year, Jeep will increase the prices to it's original price. So this is the best time to bag the Compass.
BUT HOW? In order to make this affordable Jeep a reality, the Compass is locally produced. 75% of all the materials are locally sourced and assembled locally making it much more economical to produce and export. Compass. Definitely made to lead the way.

he ATOAI (Adventure Tour Operators Association of India) will hold its 13th Annual Convention at Backwaters Ripples Resort, Kumarakom, Kerala from September 18 - 21, 2017. The theme for this year’s edition is EMERGING PATHWAYS. The global tourism industry is undergoing significant changes, with travellers increasingly preferring adventure and active holidays. The niche has not only become mainstream but is now leading it. The new traveller is driven by a desire for physical and mental transformations, feeling healthier and more alive in the process. He or she seeks to achieve this through discovery, learnings, unique experiences, meaningful stories, fun, thrills, new friendships and an expanded worldview. These are all inherent in adventure travel. Trends such as these will have implications on how travel business is conducted in the coming years. Every country has some adventure to offer, but India is a country that offers almost every adventure and active holiday experience that one can seek. tepping up its efforts to promote marketing and upgrade quality of saffron, the Spices Board has teamed up with the Jammu and Kashmir government to boost produce and improve value addition of the signature Kashmiri spice for its consumption and trading in both domestic and international markets. authentication of high quality saffron from Kashmir. The issues regarding the saffron trade came up for thorough deliberations at a two-day ‘National Seminar on Saffron’ in Srinagar recently. Delivering the keynote address, Spices Board Chairman Dr. A Jayathilak said the board and the J&K government are working in tandem for getting the GI registration for saffron. “The Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs has initiated the development of Codex standard for saffron at its 3rd session held in Chennai in February 2017,” he informed.

The saffron trade would get a fillip by addressing the issue of post-harvest management, especially for drying and storage, in order to retain the colour, aroma and flavour of the spice, he said. “Spices Board has always evinced keen interest in the promotion of saffron in both domestic and international markets, particularly in food, beverage, cosmaceutical, perfumeries and other segments to enhance the consumption through trade delegations, participation in international exhibitions and buyer-seller meets,” Dr Jayathilak noted. The seminar, organised by S K University of Agricultural Science & Technology (SKUAST) of Kashmir and Agriculture Production Department, Govt. of J&K, was inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture Production Mr Ghulam Nabi Lone. Mr Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Minister of State for Forest, Ecology and Environment; Shri Sundeep Kumar Nayak, Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production Dept, J&K; Prof Nazeer Ahmed, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST; and Mr Altaf Aijaz Andrabi, Director of Agriculture, J&K, were among those who attended the seminar. Dr Jayathilak said Spices Board is promoting the setting up of common mini-processing facilities and value addition units to improve the marketability of saffron in the saffron- growing areas by farmer groups. “We have recently 52 September 2017
supported a producer group in Pampore by providing Rs 15 lakh as grant-inaid towards 75 per cent of the cost of machinery and equipment for setting up of mini-processing and value addition unit,” he informed. Observing that aggregation is a major challenge in saffron production and marketing, he said formation of Spices Producers Societies is being encouraged to boost aggregation of the produce, common processing, value addition, and direct marketing of the spice between growers and exporters, processors and institutional buyers. “Such a measure will help maintain the quality throughout the supply chain and ensure better price realisation for the growers by eliminating the middlemen from the supply chain,” he noted. Dr Jayathilak assured providing handson training to the technical personnel

of the state government’s Agriculture Department on the protocols for testing of saffron in Spices Board’s Quality Evaluation Laboratories. He also stressed the need for popularizing the simple tests evolved for checking the adulteration in saffron by consumers. Sponsored by the Union Ministry of Agriculture, National Horticulture Board, Spices Board and J&K Bank, the seminar focused on production and market promotion of Kashmiri saffron in domestic and international trade. The Saffron Production and Export
Development Agency (SPEDA), set up by the Spices Board with J&K Govt. Chief Secretary and Union Commerce Secretary as Co-chair, along with 17 members representing various stakeholders, has been pro-active in coordinating the programmes and projects for R&D, domestic marketing, quality, consumption, promotion and export of saffron. India is a leading producer of premium and finest quality saffron in the world and Kashmiri saffron has been a recipient of the Great Taste Award, the world’s most coveted award for artisan and specialty food producers.

The delegates after deliberations decided that dharma is the foundation of human civilization and the cosmic order itself, and it has to be sustained and nourished keeping in view the changing needs of the age for the survival of humanity. In India in particular Dharma has been foundational tenet for all aspects of human life and it is our bounden duty to revisit them, reinforce them and put them to practice. In India in particular Dharma has been foundational tenet for all aspects of human life and it is our bounden duty to revisit them, reinforce them and put them to practice. Mark mentioned that Santhigiri Ashram has given a kind of message that we need to be convinced by our experiences, not by our knowledge or technology and said that the news based on religious terror is always disturbing. In the global age, we have become technocracy and that everyone including the Media needs a breaking news. Today, we can master the world with the power of technology. www.metromartdaily.com
The positive side of the global age is that it brings some evolution in our life, the evolution of connectivity, evolution of wisdom and evolution of power, he added in his speech. The function was presided over by Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty, Honorary Fellow, New Delhi Institute of Chinese Studies. Swami Navananma Jnana Tapaswi, Director, Santhigiri Ashram delivered the keynote address and Dr. K. teachings of Navajyothi Sree Karunakara Guru and its relevance to the present age. Prof. Manoranjan Mohanty said that the philosophers should take up studies in Santhigiri School of Thought, which is unique. The Global Spiritual Conclave was inaugurated by Sudarshan Bhagat, Deputy Agricultural Minister, Govt. of India. The Minister said that Kerala has given birth to great spiritual teachers like Sri Sankara, Sri Narayana Guru and others who have greatly contributed to the socio-cultural transformation of India. Kerala has perpetuated this legacy and its status as the Gods Own Country through Navajyothi Sree Karunakara Guru. Through Sishya Poojita, the venerable among the disciples, the Guru has kept alive the flow of wisdom transmission after His physical departure, he said. There existed a rich spiritual culture in India. However, over the ages, this rich spiritual culture has undergone distortion in the hands of selfish groups. Today, man is getting alienated from the enriching wisdom of sages in his struggle for fulfilling the necessities of life, he mentioned. Prof. S.R. Bhatt, Chairman, Indian Council of Philosophical Research presided over the function. In his speech Prof. Bhatt said that Dharma has been a pivotal and pervasive concept and overriding principle in different forms in all cultures and civilizations of the world and it has played an important and cardinal role in guiding and shaping our view of Reality and way of life.
