Thiruvananthapuram is changing faster than ever. Over these years, the city was principally known for its importance as the capital city of the state as well as famous temples, the scenic beauty, tourism destinations, beaches etc. Further, the city is known for ISRO centre and many other famous Hospitals, Techno Park, Industrial Park, Educational institutions, Sainik School and much more. A visitor to the city and the surrounding areas would only have a cool and calm environment except the days of strikes and protest rallies but things are changing now.

Foreword

Dear Readers,

Vizhinjam International Deepwater Seaport project at an estimated project cost of Rs. 4.089 crores is the yet another major initiative by the government of Kerala which is expected to be commissioned in three years. The Vizhinjam Seaport project lead by the Adani group will be a major employment and revenue generator for the state. We,Team Metro Mart thank our readers, columnists and advertisers for allowing us to be part of the development. We are committed to bring you the BEST, and look forward to your suggestions and comments to make it PERFECT!.

Siji Nair Managing Editor & Director

Infrastructure development have been the mantra of every government in power but the plans have not progressed due to various exceptional features of the state including the compensation packages. Roads being the most important infrastructure required for the overall growth of the state, no successive governments could make a difference in the status quo. Considering various uniqueness and land availability issues the present state government has made some serious efforts in resolving the issues and approached the central government for adequate funds and support. As a sigh of relief, the Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Mr. Nitin Gadkari has announced a package of Rs. 34,000 crores for the development of around 1065 kilometres.

Best Tourist Places to Visit in KOLLAM

Kollam is second, only to Kodungallore among the other towns of Kerala in terms of historic antiquity and was a prominent international emporium of trade of the ancient world. It was the capital of the powerful kingdom called “VENAD” which came into prominence in the 9th century AD. According to the reports presented by some historians, the Malayalam era called the “Kollam era” was established by King Udaya Marthanda Varma, King of Kollam in 825 AD. In the earliest days Phoenicians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and the Chinese used to frequent the port. The descriptions by famed travellers like Marco Polo, Ibn Batuta, Sulyman of Siraf and others clearly highlighted the historical importance of Kollam as a commercial town. Even today Kollam maintains this tradition and is one the major industrial and commercial hub of Kerala. It is also the nerve centre of Kerala’s cashew industry. 34

The Crispy Warp and Weft of Kerala Undoubtedly it is the backwaters, beaches and Ayurveda that have driven many a global and Indian customer to God’s own country down South. But there is no missing the vibrant heritage of handloom products that has been reviving the traditional skill of Kerala in the global market avenues. Deepika Dewan

As a livelihood staple of Malayalis, the Handlooms have brought in a new sense of enthusiasm and unmistakably rich avatar to the handloom sector in the State. Championed and set up under Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles, Kerala in the year 1979, the prime motive of this venture has been to protect and promote the production and weavers of handloom industry in the state while combating the invasion of umpteen affordably and massproduced mill-made textiles in the market. For over four decades, the Directorate with several like-minded institutions such as HANTEX has worked to support the handloom sector in multiple domains whether it is infrastructure, marketing, human resource development or conservation and preservation of traditional skills and products, raw material supply, export,

With production centers and sales outlets grooming up to produce hand crafted fabrics, traditional wears, sarees, garments, furnishings and made-ups, in tune with eco friendly norms for internal and export market, the never waning skill of Kerala artisans is on its way to get the muchneeded impetus. At the Conference, he was well recognized by the fellow participants where he summed up the mission of NIMS Medicity as follows: a/ Adapting renewable sources of energy for health care. b/ Evolving simple integrated solutions for the utilization of alternative energy sources like Solar, Wind and Biogas in healthcare. c/ Greening Healthcare activities by deploying renewable sources of energy. Kerala scores high in terms of literacy ratio but power shortage in Kerala faces obstructions. This is one of the main reasons why NIMS Medicity chose to adapt power-based technology in their healthcare facility. NIMS displayed its prowess by successfully combining solar panels and vertical

axis wind turbines to generate electricity at a steady voltage to run the Cath Lab. The Cath Lab that relies on green energy has advanced technology which enables it to convert even the evening sun rays into electricity. This technology was developed by G. Madhavan Nair, former chairman of ISRO. Those of you who would like to know the path breaking success of this model developed by NIMS would be delighted to learn that the first phase of 200 MW has already been commissioned. The proposed project when completed will be of 520 MW. It would be nice to know that the recentlycommissioned Hybrid

Renewable Energy Project at NIMS Heart Foundation, Neyyattinkara, which meets the energy requirements of the Catheterisation Lab at the hospital, has earned the attention of United Nations. In fact, the U.N. team had visited NIMS to get firsthand information on the project. The state of Kerala has gone through its share of challenges when it comes to healthcare facilities: a/ Grid Power Interruptions: These have been frequent in rural areas which make ‘critical medical care’ highly vulnerable. b/ Poor Power Supply: Lack of power when badly needed, improper voltage and frequency dips considerably reduce the

Kochi Ideal Place for Eco Museum: UN Development Expert

For internationally noted academician Amareswar Galla, Kochi is an ideal place for an eco museum.

Addressing a talk organised by Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) on Thursday, at David Hall in Fort Kochi he said this southwest coastal region of India is rich with heritage structures that make the city “most suitable” for eco museums. “A majority of the people consider museums as a hall or structure that houses artefacts. But a museum can be a region which highlights a culture. When I took a stroll around Kochi, I found the place ideal as eco museum; so rich is its heritage,” he noted while talking on ‘Curating Cultural Values’ organised as part of KBF’s ‘Let’s Talk’ series. Prof Galla, who is the senior

adviser at Post-2015 UN Development Agenda and World Culture Forum, also highlighted the importance of valuing culture in the present scenario. “We value everything from economics to statistics, but not culture. We don’t acknowledge its value. My aim is to curate cultural value,” he added. The ‘Let’s Talk’ series, which is a continuation of KBF’s ongoing outreach programme Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2016, is a platform for the artists, art critics, historians and academicians to interact with the people of Kochi and get to know the city and its culture better. Prof Galla is revered as a strategic cultural leader,

having been Australia’s first Professor of Museum Studies at University of Queensland in Brisbane. In addition to his extensive publication record, he is the founding Editor-in-Chief of academic journals dealing with Sustainable Heritage Development. He is also the founding Executive Director of the International Institute for the Inclusive Museum, India, Australia and Denmark. The speaker was the International Technical Adviser for the transformation of Arts Councils, National Museums and the National Parks Board (now SAN Parks) in post-apartheid South Africa. Prof Galla’s work, listed as best practice in the 2009 World Culture Report by UNESCO, included the establishment of World Heritage Areas as culture in poverty alleviation projects—Ha Long Bay and Hoi An, Vietnam and Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, India. He has received several international honours.
