Introduction
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, the iconic luxury hotel in the Vietnamese capital, has opened a new chapter in its storied 123-year history with the relaunch of its historic Heritage Wing following an extensive restoration and renovation under a 21-month project.
The comprehensive reconstruction work was centered on the original wing of the hotel, which was established in 1901 and has played host over the decades to numerous heads of state and royalty, along with world-renowned actors, writers, musicians and others. The newly renovated Heritage Wing reopened to guests in mid-December, 2023.
The updated interior design of the lobby and guest rooms in the Heritage Wing was completed by Singapore-based David Grace Designs International PTE Ltd.

1950s EARLY
The Paris Match correspondent, Graham Greene, who at that time was writing the well-known novel The Quiet American, stayed several times at the Metropole.
1954
The hotel became property of the Vietnamese government and the official hotel for visiting VIPs. The Metropole was renamed to Thong Nhat, or Reunification Hotel.
1962
The hotel underwent a modification where the French style dome was removed and the third floor was added on top of the building.
1968
An underground bunker was constructed under the hotel courtyard (currently Bamboo Bar). It was utilised to protect guests against the intense American air raids.
1970s
1980s
The Metropole earned the nickname "Embassy House" for providing a secure refuge for eleven embassies and three UN Agencies during the American War.
1992
After the renovation was completed, the hotel became a Sofitel and the Asian flagship of the brand.
1988
Following the liberalisation of the economy to global trade, the hotel underwent a transformation and was rebranded as the Pullman Hotel Metropole.
2006
The Metropole Heritage wing was renovated once more to maintain its standing in the city.
2009
The hotel became the world’s very first Sofitel Legend and has retained the name Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi up until the present day.
2023
The Heritage Wing was relaunched after a 21-month renovation and restoration project, heralding a new chapter in the hotel's century-long history.

The total key count in the Heritage Wing is now 103 compared to the previous 109, as a result of making the six pairs of connecting rooms into new Metropole suites.
The new interiors maintain their traditional aesthetic and heritage feel, while also introducing a considerable measure of bespoke comfort, advanced technology and vibrant colors.

The newly renovated wing reopened to guests in mid-December.
The updated interior design of the lobby and guest rooms in the Heritage Wing was completed by Singapore-based David Grace Designs International. Project management was provided by Artelia Vietnam and the main contractor was TTT, headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City.
